No. 25 Purdue Wrestling Hosts Boilermaker Duals on Sunday

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue wrestling team opens its home schedule Sunday, welcoming Indianapolis, Clarion and Northern Illinois to Holloway Gymnasium for the 2019 Boilermaker Duals. Action is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. ET, with Purdue facing Indianapolis on Mat 1, while Clarion and Northern Illinois kick things off on Mat 2.

Sunday will be a rolling schedule, starting each round immediately after the conclusion of the previous matches. Purdue is set to face Clarion in Round 2 and Northern Illinois in the finale. The event is Purdue’s first home quad since 2016, when Indianapolis, Bloomsburg and Northern Illinois came to Holloway.

“It’s great to finally be home and get the opportunity to compete in front of a Holloway crowd,” said Purdue head coach Tony Ersland. “Our guys have had a solid start to the season on the road, but I think we’re all excited about being home. It’s going to be a great day of wrestling.”

LAST TIME OUT

The Boilermakers improved to 3-1 in duals last Sunday, earning a 22-12 victory at North Dakota State. Purdue won 7-of-10 matches, highlighted by a 12-4 major decision for junior Max Lyon at 184 pounds, while freshmen Kendall Coleman and Thomas Penola gutted out sudden-victory wins at 157 and 197, respectively.

PURDUE NOTES

• After going three full seasons without a weekly conference honoree, Purdue had individuals honored in back-to-back weeks to start 2019-20 as freshman Kendall Coleman shared Big Ten Wrestler of the Week honors on Nov. 5 and senior Dylan Lydy was named Big Ten Wrestler of the Week on Nov. 12.

• Purdue has climbed as high as No. 19 in the team polls, with Lydy, Coleman and junior Devin Schroder ranked in the top-10 at their respective weigh classes. The Boilermakers are in the team rankings in all five national polls.

• Lydy has been ranked in 38 straight polls across all major publications and is currently ranked in the top-10 in all five major polls.

• Lydy enters Sunday five takedowns shy of the No. 20 spot on Purdue’s career takedown list. Nick Corpe sits at No. 20 with 216 for her career, and Colton Salazar is No. 19 at 224.

• With a four-point nearfall in the second period at North Dakota State, Schroder became the fifth wrestler in school history to surpass 300 career back points. He trails Chris Fleeger by two for fourth place and is 10 shy of Alex Griffin for third in the record books.

• Schroder’s 68 back points this season are already nine points short of 20th place on Purdue’s single-season record list, and would make him 1-of-3 Boilermakers with three entries on the chart, joining Jake Patacsil and Scott Hinkel.

• Through 10 matches junior Max Lyon has accumulated over 29 minutes of riding time, and is +26:27 over his opponents in the category, good for more than two and half minutes per match.

• Schroder and Lyon are first and second on the team in total points scored at 115 and 111, respectively. Impressively, 80 of Schroder’s points have come in the first period, leading to three first-period technical falls.
