Four Semifinalists Lead Purdue to 5th Place Start at CKLV

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Purdue had four wrestlers advance to the semifinals of the 2019 Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Friday and sit in fifth place overall with 53.5 team points after two sessions. Seniors Christian Brunner and Dylan Lydy, junior Devin Schroder and freshman Kendall Coleman have all secured spots on the podium with their semifinal appearances, while juniors Griffin Parriott and Max Lyon and freshman Emil Soehnlen remain alive in the consolation bracket.

Schroder got things going at 125 pounds, sticking Arizona State’s Brandon Courtney in the sixth minute with an 8-2 lead to grab nine team points for the Boilermakers and vault them up the team leaderboard. He posted a takedown in turn in the first period, and had his offense going again in the third as he caught Courtney on a shot and threw him to his back for the fall. Schroder will face second-seeded Alex Mackall of Iowa State tomorrow.

Coleman was steady throughout his 6-3 win over Justin McCoy of Virginia at 157 pounds, snagging two takedowns in the first and another in the second as he kept McCoy at bay throughout the match. Coleman advances to take on top-seeded and top-ranked Hayden Hidlay of North Carolina State in tomorrow’s semifinals.

Despite several throw attempts from Oklahoma’s Anthony Mantanona, Lydy stayed out of danger and scored a pair of takedowns in a 5-3 victory at 174 pounds. Lydy got one in the first and another in the third as he moved on to meet Nebraska’s Michaela Labriola in the semifinals.

Brunner avenged a loss from last year’s CKLV tournament to Virginia’s Jay Aiello at 197 pounds, scoring a takedown on the edge in the third period to secure a 4-2 win. Aiello took an early lead with a second-period reversal, but Brunner rallied and grabbed the match-winning score in the final 20 seconds to advance to the semifinals. He’ll face Oklahoma’s sixth-seeded Jake Woodley, who took out the No. 3 seed on his way to the final four.

Parriott and Soehnlen fell in their quarterfinal bids, suffering losses to Ohio State’s Sammy Sasso and Arizona State’s Josh Shields, respectively. Parriott looks to bounce back in the morning against No. 9 seed Denton Spencer of Virginia at 149 pounds, while Soehnlen will face Northwestern’s Shayne Oster at 165 pounds. Lyon won his consolation bout at 184 pounds Friday evening, hanging on for a 6-5 win over Northern Colorado’s 13th-seeded Alan Clothier.

Freshman Thomas Penola finished 2-2 at heavyweight for the Boilers, suffered a narrow 3-2 loss to No. 12 seed Yaraslau Slavikouski of Harvard.

Action resumes at 9 a.m. PT on Saturday, airing live on FloWrestling. The fourth and final session will follow at 3 p.m. PT

Please stop spamming the board with these emails!! Could you at least combine them into one weekly post??

Don't waste your time DEsportsDad. He doesn't read the forum or respond..He has some sort of disability or something and this is what he does for some reason.. He does the same thing to his own facebook page only he copy/pastes sports articles from all over the country on there all day and night.... It's best to just let him be and ignore it because it is not stopping
