No. 14 NU falls to No 18 Wisconsin 23-15 in Big Ten dual

EVANSTON, Ill. -- All four of Northwestern's Top-20 ranked wrestlers won their individual matches, but the No.14 Wildcats fell short against No. 18 Badgers Sunday at Welsh-Ryan Arena, in their fifth straight dual against an opponent ranked in the Top 25.

No. 4 Mike McMullan (HWT.) registered wins for the 'Cats, but Wisconsin took home the 23-15 dual victory.

Northwestern scored its first team points with No. 4 Jason Tsirtsis' 13-2 major decision over TJ Ruschell. Wisconsin led the match 11-3 because Northwestern was deducted a point for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Tsirstis built an early 4-2 lead against TJ Ruschell in the first period. Tsirtsis continued to dominate in the second period, scoring eight more points, including three points on a nearfall.

In the third period, Tsirstis refused to back down from his 12-2 lead. Ruschell was unable to score a point and Tsirtsis scored on an escape to cement his 13-2 victory.

No. 9 Pierce Harger improved to a 17-4 record with his 4-0 decision over Frank Cousins in the 165 lb. matchup. Harger put on a dominating performance, scoring four unanswered points and was awarded an extra point for a minute of riding time.

The Wildcats earned their third victory of the match with No. 17 Alex Polizzi's 8-4 decision over Timmy McCall.

Polizzi, (16-6) ranked No. 17 at 197 lbs. defeated McCall by an 8-4 decision. Polizzi scored first on a takedown with 30 seconds remaining in the first period. McCall rallied midway through the second period and scored a takedown to narrow Pollizi's lead to just one point, but Polizzi held on and won the match 8-4.

No. 4 Mike McMullan (7-1) added another Wildcat win by defeating No. 10 Connor Medbery (18-5) by a close 4-3 decision.

McMullan got points on the board first on a takedown with two minutes remaining in the first period, but Medbery proved a challenging ranked foe and quickly answered with an escape.

After a scoreless second period, McMullan scored an escape to lead 3-1. Medbery fought back on a takedown to tie the match with 1:18 remaining. McMullan scored an escape with 1:10 remaining in the match and held on to his narrow lead to win his fourth straight match.

Northwestern trailed Wisconsin 11-0 after losing the first three bouts and the first two bouts by bonus points, but fought back with victories by all four top-20 ranked wrestlers.

The 'Cats came close to their first win in the 141 lb. matchup. Pat Greco (11-10) fell to Jesse Thielke (13-11) by a close 5-4 decision.

Greco scored an escape and quickly stole the lead with a takedown to go up 3-2 with 56 seconds left in the first period. Thielke then tied the match 3-3 on an escape with 35 seconds left in the first period.

Thielke built a two-point lead early in the third period. Greco fought hard and the match came down to the final seconds, but Greco was unable to complete a final takedown.

The 157 lb. matchup between Ben Sullivan and No. 7 Isaac Jordan remained a stalemate for the first period with neither wrestler able to make a move.

Sullivan scored first with an escape with one minute remaining in the second period. Jordan answered with a takedown to go up 2-1 with 12 seconds remaining in the second.

The third period saw a flurry of action, as Jordan scored again on an escape. Sullivan quickly fought back to tie the score 3-3 on a takedown. Jordan escaped again to reclaim his lead 4-3 and had a takedown late in the third period to secure the Badger's fourth win of the match.

Redshirt freshman Robert Coukos saw his first dual action Sunday against Wisconsin's Scott Liegel. Liegel pinned Coukos in 1:44 to win the 174 lb. match-up.

Wisconsin's Jackson Hein defeated Jacob Berkowitz by an 8-3 decision. Berkowitz fought hard early in the match and entered the second period trailing just 2-1 and scored a takedown midway through the third period to come within two points at 5-3, but ultimately fell to Hein.

The 'Cats return to action Friday, Jan. 31 at Welsh-Ryan Arena to face the No. 2 Iowa Hawkeyes.

CAT STATS

Colon is the first Panther to earn the nation's top ranking since Dylan Long in 2003. Colon's current record is third among all Panthers with the highest winning percentage for a single season.

Loder is currently fifth of all Panthers for the highest career winning percentage. He is the only Panther undefeated so far this season. He has never given up bonus points, and he hasn't lost a dual since the 2011-12 season. He earned his fastest career fall in 26 seconds last week against No. 10 Johnny Eblen of Missouri. He was named Wrestler of the Week for the win.

Levi Wolfensperger recorded his 11th fall last weekend at the Grand View Open to move up in a tie for ninth among all Panthers with the most pins in a career. Peters needs just two more to crack the top 10 for most falls in a single season. He has 13 so far.

Until this season, UNI had not been ranked in the top 10 since 2003 and hadn't beaten a top 10 team since 2004.

Blue Devils Dominate Keydets, 38-9

January, 29, 2014

DURHAM, N.C.?The Duke University wrestling team turned in a dominating performance as the Blue Devils posted a 38-9 victory over Virginia Military Institute this evening in non-conference dual action. The Blue Devils scored bonus points in six of the eight bouts it won on the evening, including getting three pins.

The win is Duke's fifth in the past six seasons against the Keydets and put the Blue Devils at 5-8 in duals this season. VMI falls to 3-12 overall.

"I felt like it was a great performance," said head coach Glen Lanham. "I felt like the guys wrestled well. We've been telling them all week to go after their offense and attack and I felt like we did that tonight. It was a good start to the week. We have two tough duals coming up with Drexel and Rider so we have to be ready for those. I felt like it was a good start."

Duke kicked off the evening with redshirt freshman Evan Botwin garnering a 15-0 technical fall over Caleb Yost at 133 pounds. Botwin consistently turned Yost as the back points added up as the Blue Devil 133-pounder ended the match with 45 seconds remain in in the second period. The technical fall was the first of the Chestnut Hill, Pa. native's career.

The firsts continued to come for Duke with Xaviel Ramos grabbing six points with his first career pin in a tight 2-2 match early in the third period. Even at 2-2 heading into the third period, VMI's Emmitt Kelly chose bottom in hopes he could get the winning escape point. Ramos, however, had other ideas as the rookie put Kelly on his back with 1:19 remaining to get the fall.

A solid 6-0 decision by freshman Connor Bass at 149 pounds gave Duke the 14-6 lead after four matches and redshirt junior Immanuel Kerr-Brown quickly made it 18-6 with a second consecutive major decision at 157 pounds. Bass picked up his seventh win and third dual victory, while Kerr-Brown notched his team-best 17th win of the year.

Redshirt sophomore Trey Adamson had the fastest bout of the night, pinning Jake Koch in just 1:01 for his second fall of the year and seventh of his career. His 13th win of the year, Duke's 174-pounder is 8-4 in duals this season.

At 184 pounds, rookie Jacob Kasper gave Duke five more points with a 21-5 technical fall of Hardy Hendren. After getting off to a slow start, the Lexington, Ohio native scored seven points in the final 30 seconds to take control of the match 11-3 after three minutes. He built upon his lead in the second and ultimately ended the match with a takedown with 1:15 remaining.

Redshirt sophomore Conner Hartmann continued the trend with the third pin of the night for the Blue Devils. With a 7-0 lead after one period, Hartmann continued to wear down Andrew Embree en route to the fall with 30 seconds left in the third period. The win was the 13th of the year for the 197-pounder and puts him at 8-4 in duals this season.

Rounding out Duke's lineup for the night was senior Brian Self at heavyweight. Returning to the lineup from injury, Self suffered a tough 3-2 decision to VMI's wins leader Juan Adams after what appeared to be an escape in the third period came up just short and allowed Adams to ride out the match for the bonus point and one-point victory.

Duke continues its non-conference action at Rider and at Drexel this weekend. The duals are set for 1 and 7 p.m., respectively.

Huskies Head East to Clash with Old Dominion

NIU closes January with longest road trip of the season

DeKALB, Ill. ? The Northern Illinois University wrestling team caps off the month of January Friday night when they head to Virginia to face Old Dominion.

The dual between the Huskies and Monarchs starts at 6:30 p.m. inside ODU's Ted Constant Center.

"There will be a lot of tough match ups in this dual," said NIU head coach Ryan Ludwig. "These conference duals are always intense. We will focus on the things we do well and bring a competitive fire."

The Huskies will aim to end January the same way they began the month ? on a positive note. Last weekend, NIU suffered a 31-0 defeat at the hands of then-#7 Missouri. Despite the final tally, though, several Huskies came close to pulling off major upsets, including Rob Jillard against #1 Drake Houdashelt at 149 and Shaun'Qae McMurtry against #8 Zach Toal at 165.

Meanwhile, Old Dominion holds a 5-8 overall mark and a 1-2 MAC clip heading into Friday. The Monarchs are led on the mats by a pair of nationally-ranked opponents in #5 Chris Mecate (141 pounds) and #20 Alexander Richardson (149 pounds). ODU is coming off a 2-0 weekend on the road, knocking off Binghamton and Buffalo.

Projected NIU Lineup

141: Tyler Argue

149: Rob Jillard

174: Matt Mougin

184: Caleb Busson

197: Shawn Scott

285: Jared Torrence

Projected Old Dominion Lineup
125: Brandon Jeske

133: Scott Festejo OR Michael Hayes

141: #5 Chris Mecate

149: #20 Alexander Richardson

157: Tristan Warner

165: Devin Geoghegan OR Dillon Geoghegan

174: Billy Curling OR Austin Coburn

184: Jack Dechow

197: Kevin Beazley OR Jake Henderson

285: Matt Tourdot

Scouting Old Dominion

Old Dominion enters Friday with a 5-8 overall record and a 1-2 mark in the conference. Last weekend, the Monarchs went 2-0 up in New York, topping Binghamton, 21-12, before earning their first-ever MAC victory in a 21-10 decision at Buffalo. Despite their record, ODU has faced seven ranked teams this season, including current Top 25 teams Wisconsin, Iowa State, Virginia Tech, Edinboro and Virginia. The Monarchs boast two individuals ranked in the InterMat polls in #5 Chris Mecate (141 pounds) and #20 Alexander Richardson (149). NIU holds a 2-0 series edge following wins in 2007 and 2010.

High Mileage

Friday's dual at Old Dominion will mark the longest roadtrip the Huskies take this season. As the crow flies, there are 752 miles that separate DeKalb from Norfolk, Va. In fact, a trip this long is so rare for the NIU wrestling program that the last time they traveled this far from DeKalb was in 2006, when the team competed at the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev. The matchup will also be the first time in three meetings that NIU and ODU will face off on one of the school's campuses, as the previous two meetings have been on neutral floors (Northern Iowa in 2007 and Indiana in 2010).

Five Huskies Place at Grand View Open

While the starters were battling Missouri Saturday, seven other Huskies were out in Des Moines, Iowa, competing in the Grand View Open. Five of those seven placed at the tournament. Leading the way for that group was Derek Elmore, who won the 133-pound bracket. In addition, Jordan Northrup (3rd - 133), Trace Engelkes (4th - 165), Bryan Loughlin (4th - 184) and Sal Annoreno (6th - 141) all found their way onto the podium.

Dieringer Picked as Wrestler of the Week
Cowboy wrestling sophomore Alex Dieringer was named the Big 12 Wrestler of the Week for competition from Jan. 21 through Jan. 26. Dieringer maintained a perfect 3-0 record against Big 12 competition when he defeated Iowa State's John Nicholson with a 14-3 major decision. He is now 19-1 on the season with 12 bonus-point wins.
The honor was Dieringer's first of his career and the third for the Cowboys this season.

Keeping Up With Crutchmer
Redshirt freshman Kyle Crutchmer has been seen by several different opponents at several different weight classes. Three to be exact. The Tulsa, Okla., native was originally slated to compete at 184 pounds, but after his dual debut against OU, he began competing in open tournaments at 174 pounds. He has most recently been seen in the lineup at 197 pounds, filling in for an injured Blake Rosholt. Despite giving up more than 15 pounds to each of his last two opponents, No. 7 Matt Wilps of Pittsburgh and No. 2 Kyven Gadson of Iowa State, Crutchmer has kept both bouts very close, losing by only two points to some of the nation's best wrestlers. He owns a 14-5 record on the year.

Oh Boyd, That's A Lot of Matches
Nolan Boyd, a redshirt freshman for the Pokes, is already an impressive 33 matches in with half of the collegiate season left. To put that into perspective, last year most of the Cowboy starters finished the season with 38 matches under their belts. The 184-pounder has wrestled in five tournaments this season, winning two of them and placing in the top eight at the other three. He has gathered a 26-7 record and leads the team in wins and bonus-point wins (13).

What's Going on in the Conference
The Cowboys carry a perfect 2-0 record in Big 12 competition, defeating West Virginia and No. 18 Iowa State. Earlier this season, the Pokes suffered a 19-18 loss to the Oklahoma Sooners in Norman in a nonconference dual, thus not affecting the conference record. The Pokes look to improve to 3-0 in Big 12 play when they face the Sooners on Feb. 9 in Gallagher-Iba Arena in their final conference dual of the season.

Caldwell Gets 100
Tyler Caldwell earned his 100th career win with his 19-1 technical fall over Curt Maas of Northern Iowa in his first match of the Joe Parisi Open on Nov. 23. He placed first at the tourney and now boasts a career total of 114-27.

He put together a 63-20 record while at OU and just finished a 35-5 campaign as a Cowboy during the 2012-13 season.

Welcome to the 100 Club, Mr. Perry
Stillwater, Okla., native Chris Perry was welcomed into the Oklahoma State wrestling 100-win club after he defeated Wyoming's Brent Havlik with an 11-3 major decision to earn his 100th career win. He now totes a 109-11 career record and is the 36th Cowboy wrestler to join the 100-Win Club. Perry is also the fifth member of his family to earn the honor.

Loaded Lineup
The Cowboys return five All-Americans for the 2013-14 season in Jon Morrison, Alex Dieringer, Tyler Caldwell, Blake Rosholt and 2013 national champion Chris Perry. Of the other five Cowboys in the lineup, four are NCAA qualifiers.
In total, the Oklahoma State lineup combines for one national champion, seven Big 12 champions and eight All-Americans.

Cowboy Comebacks
Josh Kindig and Austin Marsden return to the Cowboy lineup after taking redshirts during the 2012-13 season. Kindig spent two years in the lineup as a true freshman and a sophomore before taking a year off. As a starter, Kindig produced a third-place and runner-up finish at Big 12s and was a two-time NCAA qualifier.

Marsden was taken from his redshirt late in the 2011-12 season after starting heavyweight Alan Gelogaev suffered a season-ending injury. Marsden went on to finish second at the Big 12 Championships and qualify for NCAAs as a true freshman.

Ringing Out the Competition
Many eyes will be on Alex Dieringer this season after he completed an outstanding freshman campaign in 2013.

He was named the 2013 Intermat Freshman of the Year and the Amateur Wrestling News Redshirt Freshman of the Year, finishing as a Big 12 Champion and producing a third-place finish at NCAAs to earn All-American status. He finished the season with 23 bonus-point wins, only second to Cowboy standout and two-time NCAA champion Jordan Oliver. Of those bonus-point wins, four came over top-20 opponents.

Dieringer went 35-3 overall and 18-1 in dual competition. He also owned a perfect 7-0 record over Big 12 competition. Look for big things to come from the Port Washington, Wisc., native.

No. 9 Cowboys Tear Up the Tigers, 28-6

STILLWATER, Okla. ? The No. 9 Oklahoma State wrestling team beat down the No. 10 Missouri Tigers, 28-6, in front of almost 3,000 fans at Gallagher-Iba Arena on Friday.

The night was highlighted by four major decisions coming from Eddie Klimara (125), Tyler Caldwell (165), Chris Perry (174) and Jordan Rogers (184).

"We've had a bit of a tougher schedule, and it's hard to get on a roll when you're losing a match, winning a match, losing a match like we did," coach John Smith said. "You just have to work that much harder. You have to recognize it's within us to do these things that we're talking about. We just have to make sure we execute in practice and understand that it's a mental game from this point forward."

Klimara kicked it off for the Pokes, picking up a takedown in each period. He was also awarded an escape, a penalty point and a riding time point to seal the 9-1 major decision over Barlow McGhee.

Jon Morrison handled Matt Manley from the start of the 133-pound bout, scoring a quick takedown in the first period and maintaining a dominant performance. Morrison tallied a 6-1 decision over Manley to earn the team three more points.

At 141 pounds, Anthony Collica picked up the win in a nail biter over Lavion Mayes. The two were tied 3-3 at the end of regulation. The bout eventually went into a tiebreaker after a scoreless sudden victory period. Collica rode out Mayes in the first 30-second period, giving him a huge advantage going into the second half of the tiebreaker. He was awarded a quick escape before taking Mayes down with just a second left in the bout to walk away with the 6-3 victory.

The Cowboys dropped one of their two losses at 149 pounds, where No. 9 Josh Kindig held off No. 1 Drake Houdashelt from scoring until the third period. However, it was not enough as Houdashelt scored an escape and a takedown and was awarded a riding time point to defeat the Cowboy, 4-0.

No. 2 Alex Dieringer gave the Cowboys another W when he earned a 4-2 decision over Joey LaVallee.

He was followed by a trio of major decisions from his teammates, where the Pokes at 165, 174 and 184 pounds only gave up a combined eight points.

Senior Tyler Caldwell started it off with his dominating performance over Jordan Gagliano. The fifth-ranked 165-pounder scored a quick takedown in the first period and finished off the period with five back points. He reversed Gagliano in the second and earned another set of backpoints. He ended the bout with a takedown and riding time advantage to earn the 15-2 major decision.

"I just wanted to put up as much points as I can in the match," Caldwell said. "Unfortunately… sometimes you have a tight match and you have to punch through and get the win however you can. Sometimes, you break through early and get those turns like I did in the first period where I kind of opened up the match to get the bonus points opportunity."

Perry, the nation's No. 2 174-pounder, kept it going with four takedowns in his 11-3 major decision over Mikey England.

Jordan Rogers stepped in for the Cowboys at 184 pounds and came out with a dominating performance over Cody Johnston to earn his first win in Gallagher-Iba Arena and seal the dual for the Pokes. Rogers scored a couple of takedowns and paired each of them with back points just in the first period. The two exchanged reversals in the second period before Rogers took home the 11-3 win with his riding time advantage.

Nolan Boyd, who weighed in at 184 pounds, took the starting spot at 197 pounds and faced No. 5 J'Den Cox. Boyd put up a fight but was not able to keep up with the freshman phenom as he fell, 9-3.

Austin Marsden capped off the exciting night for the orange and black when he defeated Devin Mellon, snatching a couple of takedowns for the 6-3 win.

The Cowboys return to Gallagher-Iba Arena on Feb. 8 when they take on Cal State Bakersfield before battling it out with the Oklahoma Sooners on Feb. 9.

The American University wrestling team won five matches but it was not enough as Bucknell was able to earn a 21-18 victory in the dual on Friday night in Lewisburg, Pa.

"Tonight was a tough loss," said Head Coach Teague Moore. "But as a team we were able to wrestle hard in a lot of positions."

No. 11 Spencer Slishman was able to put the Eagles back on top in the dual with a 3-2 decision over Connor Lapresi.

The dual continued to go back and forth as Jason Grimes registered his first career fall to give American an 18-12 lead, pinning Rory Bonner in 1:42.

An injury default by the Eagles at 197 lbs. tied the dual up again at 18 and Joe Stolfi secured the win for the Bison with a 5-0 decision over Blake Herrin at heavyweight.

"I'm very happy for Spencer, that match was won on heart," said Moore. "Jason came through with a fall with the team needed it and that's great for a freshman to be able to accomplish."

American returns to Bender Arena on Saturday, Feb. 8 to host Navy at 7 p.m. The match will be broadcast live on the Patriot League Network.

STOLFI'S DECISION PROPELS WRESTLING TO 21-18 HOME VICTORY OVER AMERICAN
Bison Improve to 3-2 at Home this Season

LEWISBURG, Pa. ? For the fourth time in the last five duals Bucknell wrestling 285-pounder Joe Stolfi took to the mat with a chance to tie the score or put the Bison ahead and for the fourth time during that stretch he succeeded Friday evening in a 21-18 victory over American in Davis Gym. The junior defeated Blake Herrin by a 5-0 score to break an 18-18 deadlock and help Bucknell improve to 6-8 overall this season and 3-2 opposite EIWA competition.

Stolfi, who is ranked 20th nationally and improved to 22-6 on the year, recorded pins to lift the Bison to home victories over Brown and Clarion two weeks ago. Last Friday his pin evened the score at Columbia and he continued the clutch performances against American and Herrin as he won his seventh consecutive bout.

In contrast to most of Stolfi's bout this year, Friday's went the full seven minutes. It was scoreless through two periods with Stolfi having a two-minute riding time advantage. He chose down to begin the third period and earned an immediate escape. Less than a minute later he scored a takedown that gave him a 3-0 advantage over a struggling Herrin, who was whistled for stalling to make the score 4-0. The riding time point lifted Stolfi to the 5-0 win and the Bison to their third home win of the season in five tries.

"We are always confident when the match comes down to him," said Bison head coach Dan Wirnsberger about Stolfi. "His preparation is spot-on and he is a tough, gritty competitor."

Bucknell and American (6-6, 4-4 EIWA) alternated wins and losses over the first seven bouts in the match. The Bison held a 12-9 lead at that point thanks to an injury default by the Eagles at 165 pounds. A pin by American's Jason Grimes at 184 lifted the Eagles ahead by an 18-12 margin, but a second injury default at 197 by nationally ranked Daniel Mitchell and Stolfi's decision brought Bucknell back ahead.

Freshman Grim Gonzalez earned the first win of the day for the Bison at 133 pounds. The score was tied 1-1 entering the final 30 seconds of the bout and he responded with the first takedown in the match. A late escape by Esteban Gomez-Rivera closed the final gap to 3-2.

"We still have some work to do at some weight classes and we're excited about others," mentioned Wirnsberger. "While Stolfi won the deciding bout, Grim Gonzalez was probably the MVP of this match. He beat a tough opponent and has continued to improve every week."

Fellow freshman Victor Lopez earned the second win of the day for Bucknell. He led Mark Cirello 6-2 after two periods and added a reversal and more than two minutes of riding time for a 9-5 victory for his third consecutive win.

Rustin Barrick (165) and Tyler Lyster (197) each earned six points toward the Bison team score thanks to injuries by their opponents. Barrick held a commanding 12-3 lead with just over 30 seconds left in his bout when Cristian Masaya was forced to withdraw, while Lyster was ahead 3-2 when Mitchell conceded to injury.

Bucknell, which equaled its win total from all of 2012-13, snapped a three-match losing streak against American. The Bison now hold a 19-4-1 edge in the all-time series.

Friday's match was the first of a busy weekend for Bucknell, which wrestles at George Mason (9 a.m.) and No. 13 Virginia (2 p.m.) on Sunday.

Duke Continues Non-Conference Slate at Rider and Drexel

January 31, 2014

DURHAM, N.C.?Coming off of a commanding win over VMI, the Duke University wrestling team looks to continue its winning ways with a trip north to Rider and Drexel Feb. 1. The Blue Devils face the Broncs at 1 p.m. and travel to Drexel for a 7 p.m. dual.

Duke improved to 5-8 overall in duals this season with a 38-9 win over visiting VMI Wednesday night. Six of the Blue Devils' eight losses have come against top 25 foes this season.

Both Rider and Drexel will be relatively new opponents for the Blue Devils. Duke last faced a Drexel squad in 2000 and is 0-3 all-time against the Dragons. The Rider dual will be a first for the two programs. Both matches will be streamed live with Rider match being free to Blue Devil Network+ subscribers and the Drexel dual being free for all viewers.

Rider enters the match with a 10-5 overall record and most recently suffered a narrow 17-16 loss to Boson University. The Blue Devils and Broncs share one common opponent in Virginia Tech as both program suffered to defeats at the hand of the Hokies.

Following the dual with Rider, Duke will make the trip to Philadelphia to take on Drexel. The Dragons are 4-13 overall and coming off a 20-19 setback to Army. Both Duke and Drexel share a win over VMI and losses to Indiana and Eastern Michigan.

The Blue Devils feature three wrestlers with double digit wins as redshirt junior Immanuel Kerr-Brown and redshirt sophomores Conner Hartmann and Trey Adamson head into the weekend looking to add to their totals. Kerr-Brown, wrestling at 157 pounds, is tops on the squad with a 17-7 overall mark and 10-3 record in duals. The Rome, Ga., native is on a three-match win streak and has won four of his past five bouts, including posting consecutive major decisions.

Both Hartmann and Adamson own 13 wins apiece at 197 and 174 pounds, respectively. Adamson is 5-2 in non-conference duals this season and leads the Blue Devils with seven major decisions, while Hartmann is 7-3 in non-conference bouts after his pin against VMI Wednesday.

Overall, the Duke lineup is a young group featuring five true or redshirt freshmen and just one senior. Freshman Jacob Kasper leads all freshmen with a 10-10 record at 184 pounds, while 149-pounders Connor Bass and Jake Faust have traded places in the starting lineups with 3-5 and 3-1 dual records, respectively.

Rider's 125-pounder Robert Deutsch is ranked 15th nationally and headlines the Broncs lineup with a 21-4 overall record and 15-1 mark in duals. Curt Delia is also ranked, coming in at 20th at 149 pounds with a 15-9 mark.

Drexel is led by Brandon Palik at 197 pounds. Ranked 14th, the senior is 13-4 overall and on a two-match win streak. Palik will be the seventh ranked wrestler Hartmann has faced this season and the second highest overall.

Duke's busy schedule continues at home Wednesday, Feb. 5 against Gardner-Webb at 7 p.m. The Blue Devils resume ACC action Feb. 8 at Maryland.

Flashes Earn Road Win at EMU

YPSILANTI, Mich. - Kent State won four of the final five matches in an 18-12 victory over Eastern Michigan Friday night. The Eagles led 9-6 at the midway point, before suffering their first loss of the season at Bowen Field House. The Golden Flashes (9-8) improved to 3-2 in Mid-American Conference duals, while defeating EMU for the 30th straight time.

"We wrestled well, but not great," Head Coach Jim Andrassy said. "And we need to get to great. There were several matches where we looked good in two periods, but not three."

The Eagles (8-6) led 6-0 after a pair of close victories at 125 and 133.

Junior Tyler Small put the Flashes on the board with a 7-3 victory over Nick Barber.

Michael DePalma followed with a 5-0 shutout, but Eastern Michigan took the lead back at 157 with Ian Miller out the Flashes' lineup.

"I think if Ian wrestles, it's a seven-point difference there and Mack (McGuire) got upset tonight," Andrassy said. "So we could have won by more. But at the same time we won some matchups in the upperweights that could have gone either way going into the night."

Sophomore Tyler Buckwalter tied the dual up 9-9 with a 5-2 decision of Dean Vettese. It was Buckwalter's first win away from the M.A.C. Center.

"Tyler looked pretty solid," Andrassy said. "He worked hard tonight. Now we just need him to become more explosive."

Junior Caleb Marsh gave the Flashes the lead for good with a 5-3 win over Jake Davis, who's "always been able to keep matches close with Caleb," according to Andrassy.

Sophomore Sam Wheeler earned some redemption against Phillip Joseph with an 11-7 victory. Joseph defeated Wheeler at last year's conference tournament.

"Any time you can beat a guy that's beaten you, it's a sign that you've been doing the right things to improve yourself," Andrassy said.

Sophomore Cole Baxter sealed the team victory with a 5-2 win over Nick Whitenburg at 197. The only points Baxter surrendered against the 2013 NCAA qualifier came on a reversal in the final five seconds of the match.

Kent State will take a week off from competition before visiting Northern Illinois on Saturday, Feb. 8.

NC STATE WRESTLING: Pack Takes Down Tar Heels, 19-16
Gwiazdowski records pin at 285 and Wilkes upsets No. 30 wrestler at 133

RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC State wrestling team recorded a 19-16 win over North Carolina in an ACC dual Friday at Reynolds Coliseum. NC State used bonus point victories at 174 and 285 pounds and an upset win at 133 pounds clinched the match for the Pack. NC State improves to 12-4, while the Tar Heels fall to 5-9.

The dual started at 157 pounds with the two schools splitting the first four matches.

Junior Tommy Gantt, ranked 18th nationally, got the Pack on the scoreboard first with his 9-4 decision. Gantt improves to 12-1 in duals this year, including winning his last eight.

At 165, senior Nijel Jones dropped a close 3-1 decision as the dual was tied 3-3 after two bouts.

Freshman Pete Renda notched the Pack's first bonus point win of the night, as he scored a 12-3 major decision at 174 pounds. Renda, ranked 20th nationally, improves to 14-1 in duals this year having won six straight.

UNC crept back to within a point with a 6-3 decision at 184 pounds.

NC State got the three points back at 197 pounds when redshirt senior KaRonne Jones recorded a 7-3 decision. Jones has now won back-to-back ACC matches after his upset of No. 22 Chris Penny of Virginia Tech last weekend.

At the halfway point, it was NC State up 10-6.

NC State got much needed bonus points at 285 pounds, as redshirt-sophomore Nick Gwiazdowski recorded his 14th pin of the year just 1:03 into the match. Gwiazdowski improves to 30-2 overall and 15-0 in duals this year.

UNC closed the gap to 16-10 after a major decision at 125 pounds.

NC State got what ended up being the decisive points when freshman Chris Wilkes upset No. 30 Troy Heilmann 7-2 at 133 pounds. The Pack was up nine points going into the final two bouts, and without a UNC pin the Pack ended up with the win regardless of the final two bouts.

The Tar Heels did record decisions at 141 pounds (7-0) and 149 pounds (2-0), but the Pack clinched with Wilkes' win at 133 pounds.

NC State will host its final home dual of the season next weekend, as No. 13 Virginia visits Reynolds Coliseum on Sunday, Feb. 9 at 2 p.m.

Huskies Fall at Old Dominion, 23-12
Smith, Scott and Torrence claim victories against Monarchs

NORFOLK, Va. - Facing Mid-American Conference newcomer Old Dominion, the Northern Illinois University wrestling team dropped a 23-12 decision on the road Friday night in Norfolk, Va.

Despite a 6-3 lead after two matches, the Huskies (6-9, 1-5 MAC) dropped the next six bouts - including two agonizing overtime defeats back-to-back - to the Monarchs (6-8, 2-2 MAC).

"(Nick) Smith was dominant and (Shawn) Scott and (Jared) Torrence won hard-fought matches," said NIU head coach Ryan Ludwig. "Torrence showed his leadership in gutting out a gritty performance that every guy needs to learn from. We were in position to get our hands raised in some tight bouts that were the swing matches of the dual."

ODU got on the board first when Brandon Jeske claimed a 6-2 decision over Nick Harrison at 125 pounds. However, the Huskies quickly turned the three-point deficit into a three-point lead, as Nick Smith scored a pin against Michael Hayes late in the third period to give NIU a 6-3 edge.

The Monarchs tied the contest at 6-6 when Tyler Argue fell to Chris Mecate - the nation's fifth-ranked wrestler at 141 pounds - in a 4-0 decision. From there, though, ODU scored two demoralizing victories in consecutive matches. At 149, Rob Jillard held a 3-1 lead over 20th-ranked Alexander Richardson through two periods, only to have Richardson tie the match in the final seconds of regulation. After the first sudden victory and overtime session, the nationally-ranked Monarch got a takedown and two nearfall points in the second sudden victory session to garner a 7-5 win.

Andrew Morse would endure a similar fate at 157, falling 7-5 in sudden victory to Tristan Warner to give ODU a commanding 12-6 edge. After scoring a takedown and a reversal in the first two periods, the Huskie sophomore held a 4-1 lead entering the final stanza. Yet, Warner got a reversal against Morse to get within 4-3. After an escape from Morse, Warner got the tying score on a takedown, then nailed another one to secure three more points for the Monarchs.

Trailing 12-6, the Huskies were unable to spark a comeback. Shaun'Qae McMurtry dropped that 165 match in a 12-9 decision to Devin Geoghegan to make it a 15-6 ODU lead. Consecutive major decisions for the hosts - Billy Curling over Billy Chancey, 15-4, at 174 and Jack Dechow over Caleb Busson, 15-5, at 184 - resulted in the clincher for the Monarchs.

Despite the deficit, NIU finished strong with a pair of commanding wins at the upper weights. Shawn Scott earned his 17th win of the year at 197 pounds with a 6-4 decision against Kevin Beazley. Meanwhile, heavyweight Jared Torrence scored his 50th career victory, as he triumphed over Matt Tourdot, 5-3.

The Huskies return to DeKalb for their final home meet of the season next weekend, as they play host to Kent State Saturday, Feb. 8, at 3 p.m. inside Victor E. Court.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

No. 12 Ohio State Falls to No. 11 Michigan, 21-12

Nick Heflin, Mark Martin, Logan Stieber earn wins; Buckeyes return to action at 7 p.m. Monday at Purdue

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? The No. 12 Ohio State wrestling team dropped a 21-12 decision to No. 11 Michigan Friday night in St. John Arena. Buckeyes Nick Heflin (197 pounds), Mark Martin (174 pounds) and Logan Stieber (141 pounds) earned wins for the Scarlet and Gray in front of 4,412 fans. Ohio State falls to 7-4 overall and 2-4 in the Big Ten. Michigan improves to 9-2 overall and 5-0 in the conference.

Up next, Ohio State will face No. 24 Purdue at 7 p.m. in West Lafayette. The match between the Buckeyes and Boilermakers will air live on BTN.

Trailing 6-0 early after starting the evening with the 157-pound bout, Martin, a sophomore and No. 14 in the nation, got the Buckeyes on the board first with a 4-3 victory over Collin Zeerip. With both wrestlers tied, 2-2, entering the third period, Martin scored a takedown in the final period and held Zeerip to only an escape to secure the victory.

A 16-3 major decision by Heflin over Chris Heald cut the Wolverines' lead to two (9-7). A senior ranked No. 8 in the country, Heflin jumped out to a 5-0 lead on a takedown and 3-point nearfall and nearly recorded the fall in the first period. However, Heald managed to get out and forced the match into the second period. Heflin collected four more takedowns, an escape, penalty point and riding time (3:13) en route to the win.

Recording Ohio State's final win of the evening, Stieber, a redshirt-junior who is ranked No. 3, posted a 16-1 technical fall over No. 13 Steve Dutton. Stieber already had an 8-0 lead entering the second period and proceeded to record three additional takedowns, an escape and riding time (4:32).

In other action, Ohio State was forced into three consecutive overtime bouts between heavyweight and the 133-pound bouts. Heavyweight and redshirt-freshman Nick Tavanello and No. 2 Adam Coon traded escapes in the second and third periods en route to sudden victory. After a scoreless overtime period, Coon recorded a reversal after choosing bottom and took a 3-1 lead in the first tiebreaker. In the second tiebreaker, Tavanello scored an escape, but could not notch a takedown in his attempt at victory.

Like the Tavanello-Coon match, Buckeye 125-pounder and redshirt-freshman Nick Roberts and Conor Youtsey exchanged escapes before heading into the extra session. After holding Roberts, ranked No. 15, the entire 30 seconds in the first tiebreaker, Youtsey escaped Roberts in the second tiebreaker for the 2-1 win.

In just his second loss of the season, No. 5 and redshirt-sophomore Johnni DiJulius dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to Rossi Bruno at 133 pounds. It took a pair of sudden victory periods and four tiebreakers before Bruno edged DiJulius.

The Scarlet and Gray suffered losses at 157, 165, 184 and 149 pounds Friday night. Opening the evening at 157 pounds, redshirt-junior Randy Languis lost to No. 14 Brian Murphy, 5-2. Up next at 165 pounds, senior Joe Grandominico fell to No. 6 Dan Yates, 8-4, while184-pounder and No. 10 Kenny Courts (redshirt-sophomore) lost to No. 20 Domenic Abounader. In the 149-pound bout, senior and No. 18 Ian Paddock lost to No. 7 Eric Grajales, 7-2.

No. 13 Virginia Wrestling Holds Off Maryland, 16-15

Bonus point by Sulzer at 165 pounds proves to be the difference

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. ? The No. 13 Virginia wrestling team earned a 16-15 victory over Maryland Friday evening in front of a packed house at Memorial Gymnasium. A major decision by second-ranked Nick Sulzer (R-Jr., Cleveland, Ohio) at 165 pounds proved to be the difference as both teams won five bouts.

"I have the utmost respect for Maryland," Virginia head coach Steve Garland said. "I knew going in that it was going to be a battle, and it really was. That was one of the crazier dual meets we've had all year. After going through the match with the kids and my staff, we found there were a lot of positives. Nick Herrmann and Blaise Butler grinded out wins, with Blaise getting a really big win in the tiebreaker. Nick Sulzer got us bonus points, which essentially won us the dual."

Nick Herrmann (So., Amarillo, Texas), Gus Sako (R-Jr., Cleveland, Ohio), Blaise Butler (R-So., Belvidere, Ill.) and Stephen Doty (R-Sr., St. Louis, Mo.) each won by decision at 125, 149, 157 and 174, respectively, for the Cavaliers.

Virginia jumped to an early 3-0 lead when Herrmann picked up a 5-1 win over Billy Rappo at 125 pounds. Herrmann took Rappo down 55 seconds into the match and never trailed.

The Terrapins (5-8, 1-3) won the next two bouts to grab a 6-3 dual lead. At 133, Maryland's Tyler Goodwin scored on a five-point move early in the first period and forced Joseph Martinez (R-So., Platteville, Colo.) to play comeback from there in rolling to a 12-6 decision. Shyheim Brown then scored a 5-2 upset over 15th-ranked Joe Spisak (R-Jr., Boiling Springs, Pa.) at 141; four of Brown's five points, including a two-pointer late in the third period, came on penalty points from stall warnings.

Virginia captured the next four weight classes to move out to a 16-6 advantage. Ranked as high as ninth nationally, Sako returned to the mat with an 8-3 win over Frank Goodwin at 149. Sako racked up six first-period points on a pair of takedowns and a reversal as he competed for the first time in nearly a month because of an injury. He now is 15-1 on the year.

Ranked 15th nationally, Butler brought the full house to its feet with a 7-6 win in a tiebreaker against Danny Orem at 157. Butler took a 5-4 lead and a decisive riding time advantage into the third period. An escape point knotted the score, and Butler was called for a stall warning, his second, to give Orem a penalty point in the waning seconds. Butler's riding time point sent the match into overtime. After one scoreless sudden-victory period, Butler escaped quickly in the first tiebreaker period. He then maintained control for the second tiebreaker to claim the win.

Sulzer once again dominated at 165, taking Ben Dorsay down seven times in an 18-5 major decision. Sulzer is now 26-1 on the season, with 13 major decisions among his 19 bonus-point victories. UVa's final win came at 174, where Doty rolled to a 9-2 win over Ty Snook to improve to 21-7 on the season.

With top-10 wrestlers manning each of the final three weights, the Terrapins claimed the final trio of bouts, although each went down to the wire. UVa's Jon Fausey (R-Sr., Dalmatia, Pa.) fell 3-2 to top-ranked Jimmy Sheptock at 184. Sheptock scored on a takedown midway through the third period to break a 1-1 tie. On the takedown, Fausey was forced to take injury time. Sheptock took the down position coming out of the stoppage, but Fausey rode him the rest of the way to claim the riding time point.

Maryland nearly got the bonus points it needed at 197, as eighth-ranked Christian Boley posted a 6-1 win over Zach Nye (R-So., Enola, Pa.). With the match tied 1-1 with 45 seconds left in the third period, Boley took Nye down and put him on his back for three back points. Boley was mere inches from getting the fall, but Nye fought him off for several seconds before wiggling loose and getting off his back as Boley settled for the back points.

The match came down to heavyweight, where Ethan Hayes (R-So., New Lebanon, Ohio) dropped a 4-3 decision to sixth-ranked Spencer Myers. The Maryland All-American took a 3-1 lead into the third period, but Hayes took him down midway through the period to tie the bout. After Hayes pushed the riding time back under a minute, Myers escaped for the decisive point.

Wins from Brown, Goodwin not enough to lift Terps over Cavs

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. ? The Maryland wrestling team came up just short in its upset bid in Charlottesville, falling to No. 13 Virginia, 16-15, at Memorial Gymnasium Friday night.

Shyheim Brown and Tyler Goodwin came up big for the Terps (5-7, 1-3 ACC) in the early going, but the Cavaliers (14-3, 3-1 ACC) were able to rack up five wins before staving off a Maryland run at the higher weight classes.

Virginia jumped out to an early advantage behind Nick Herrmann, who defeated Billy Rappo by a 5-1 decision. Goodwin then tied the score for the Terps. The freshman started fast and finished strong in a 12-6 win

Brown broke his three-match losing streak to put the Terps in front, upsetting No. 15 Joe Spisak. Gus Sako would then start a Virginia run that would last until 165 pounds, rolling past Frank Goodwin, 8-3.

Danny Orem was able to take No. 15 Blaise Butler to overtime before falling, 7-6. At 165 pounds, No. 2 Nick Sulzer picked up an enormously important bonus point for Virginia, beating Ben Dorsay by major decision.

After starting his season 2-0, Ty Snook finally fell at 174 pounds. No. 17 Stephen Doty closed well to defeat the Terrapin senior, 8-2.

No. 1 Jimmy Sheptock got the Terps back in the win column, using a third period takedown to edge Jon Fausey, 3-2. Needing to get at least one bonus point in its final two matches to at least tie the score. Maryland almost got it from No. 8 Christian Boley. The New York native had Zach Nye on his back late in the third period, but was unable to obtain the fall. Boley settled for a 6-1 win.

The job was left up to No. 6 Spencer Myers, who was able to win his match, but not pull the Terps level or ahead in the dual. The junior defeated Ethan Hayes, 4-3.

The Terps return home for their next match against Duke on Feb. 8. Action is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. from Comcast Pavilion.

OREM, Utah - The Utah Valley University wrestling team will begin a three-match homestand Saturday against Boise State. The Wolverines and Broncos will meet up for the eighth time in history and the dual will take place in the PE Building at 7 p.m.

The contest will be televised live locally on UVU TV with Mike Clapier and trackwrestling.com.

Saturday's dual will mark Utah Valley's (3-6, 0-0 WWC) final non-conference contest of the season, as the Wolverines will begin their Western Wrestling Conference slate next week.

"It always makes for a fun night when Boise State comes to town," said UVU head coach Greg Williams. "We've won the last two times that they've been here and we're looking forward to another solid performance from our guys."

UVU has been off since Jan. 18 when it dropped a tightly contested dual at Arizona State, 18-16. A forfeit by the Wolverines was the difference as both teams won five bouts apiece but giving up the six points proved to be too much for UVU to overcome.

Prior to the dual against ASU, Utah Valley took care of business in its home opener against Grand Canyon on Jan. 9, 28-9. The Wolverines won eight of the 10 bouts on the night; including a pin from sophomore 133-pounder Monte Schmalhaus. The victory helped the Wolverines improve to 16-7 at home over the past six seasons.

Junior 285-pounder Adam Fager leads UVU on the season with a 15-6 overall and is currently ranked 13th in his weight class by InterMat. Fager was also the lone Wolverine listed on the first NCAA Coaches' Panel Rankings that was released last week. The Utah Valley heavyweight also came in at 13th on that poll.

About Boise State
The Broncos, who call the Pac-12 home in wrestling, are 2-6 overall on the season and 2-3 in Pac-12 action. BSU will host Northern Colorado at Taco Bell Arena on Friday evening before traveling to Orem on Saturday. The Broncos will enter the weekend having dropped their last three dual meets, falling to No. 21 North Dakota State (26-15), No. 23 Lehigh (35-6) and Arizona State (21-15).

Seniors Jake Swartz (184 pounds) and J.T. Felix (heavyweight) lead Boise State as they are currently ranked seventh and ninth in their respective weight classes. Felix also leads the squad in victories, at 18-3, while Swartz holds a 9-1 record. Together the two have tallied five NCAA Championship appearances, as Swartz is a three-time NCAA qualifier and Felix has wrestled in two.

Boise State leads the all-time series 5-2 over the Wolverines but UVU has won the last two meeting in Orem, which includes a 22-20 win over BSU in 2010 when the Broncos were ranked eighth in nation at the time.

Up Next for the Wolverines
UVU will continue its final home stretch of the season next week when it begins conference action against South Dakota State on Thursday (Feb. 6). The Wolverines will then take on No. 21 North Dakota State the following evening in their regular season home finale.
