Flashes to Host MAC Championships Saturday & Sunday

Kent State's M.A.C. Center will play host to the 2014 Mid-American Conference Wrestling Championships this Saturday and Sunday. The conference's largest tournament in the last 32 years will feature 90 wrestlers competing for 10 individual titles. Increasing its membership to nine teams this season, the MAC initially earned 41 automatic bids to the 2014 NCAA Championships.

Following what may have been the toughest regular season schedule in program history, 10 Golden Flashes have their sights set on automatic bids to the NCAA Championships in Oklahoma City. Familiar foes from dual meets will be standing in Kent State's way, including No. 5 Northern Iowa, No. 9 Missouri and No. 25 Central Michigan.

The final individual NCAA coaches' rankings featured 49 MAC wrestlers, including the No. 1 spots at 133 and 149.

Live streaming video on both days can be seen with a subscription on Flowrestling. Live audio with updates on every match can be heard free on Golden Flashes Radio on iHeartRadio with Ty Linder and Matt Miller. Live scoring can be followed on trackwrestling.com.

Action begins at noon on both Saturday and Sunday. The semifinals are slated for Saturday at 4 p.m., while the championship round will be Sunday at 1:20 p.m.

Prior to taking redshirts last season, junior Tyler Small and sophomore Ian Miller won 2012 MAC titles in Athens. Small earned shutout victories in both his semifinal and final matches on the way to a 141-pound crown. Miller coasted to a 12-3 major decision in his 149-pound final.

Junior 174-pounder Caleb Marsh (17-8) has won his last five matches, including three wins over Top 30 opponents in that span. Following a 3-0 finish at the NWCA National Duals on Feb. 16-17, Marsh was named MAC Wrestler of the Week. His 8-7 decision over No. 8 Tanner Weatherman helped the Golden Flashes to 19-16 upset of Iowa State. Since Jan. 11, Marsh is 11-3 with five wins over Top 30 opponents.

Seedings and Potential Matchups

Eight Golden Flashes earned Top 7 seeds for this weekend and will begin action in the quarterfinal round. Ian Miller (24-4) earned the No. 1 seed in a 157-pound bracket filled with seven wrestlers ranked in the Top 33. Miller's only career MAC loss came on a medical default against Central Michigan's Luke Smith, who earned the No. 2 seed.

After going 5-2 in MAC duals, sophomore 149-pounder Michael DePalma (21-17) earned the No. 3 seed. DePalma is likely to face Northern Iowa's Tyler Patten in the quarterfinals, who he defeated on Feb. 9.

Sophomore Cole Baxter (22-15) is the No. 4 seed at 197, after going 5-3 in MAC duals. In the quarterfinals, Baxter will likely face Eastern Michigan's Nick Whitenburg, who he defeated 5-2 on Jan. 31. Baxter may have a chance to avenge close losses against No. 1 seed Phil Wellington (Ohio) and No. 3 seed Shawn Scott (Northern Illinois).

Sophomore Mack McGuire (24-12) is the No. 4 seed at 133, which carries five NCAA qualifying spots. McGuire went 5-3 in MAC duals, suffering a pair of close losses to the No. 2 and 3 seeds. He is likely headed for a quarterfinal matchup with Missouri's Mike Manley, who he defeated 4-2 on Feb. 21.

Juniors Tyler Small (21-5) and Caleb Marsh are each No. 5 seeds in brackets carrying five automatic bids. Small recently lost an overtime match to Missouri's Lavion Hayes, who will likely be his quarterfinal opponent. Like Small, Marsh also went 5-3 in MAC duals. Marsh's last loss came against his likely quarterfinal opponent Cody Caldwell (Northern Iowa) in match that was tied 1-1 late in the third.

Junior Tyler Buckwalter is the No. 5 seed at 165 pounds. Buckwalter is 4-1 at home this season. His only loss came against Central Michigan's Nick Becker, who will likely be his quarterfinal opponent.

Redshirt freshman Mimmo Lytle is the No. 7 seed after going 3-5 in conference duals. Lytle's biggest MAC win came against Northern Iowa's Blaize Cabell who is the No. 4 seed and No. 27 in the nation.

Sophomores Del Vinas and Cory Campbell are each expected to compete in the opening round at 125 and 184 respectively for the right to wrestle the top seed in the quarterfinals.

Last Season & Tournament History

Last year in Buffalo, the Golden Flashes claimed three of the MAC's 30 automatic NCAA bids and later earned three more at-large bids at the 2013 NCAA Championships. Dustin Kilgore became a four-time MAC champion and gave Kent State at least one individual champion for the eighth straight season. Missouri burst onto the scene last season, winning the team title by a 48-point margin with four individual crowns.

Since the MAC Championships began in 1952, Kent State has won 10 tournament title, including six straight from 1977-82 under Head Coach Ron Gray. The Flashes have finished second 26 times, including seven of the last eight seasons. Central Michigan has won 14 of the last 16 tournaments.

In The Rankings

Kent State, Ohio and Old Dominion were all in the receiving votes category of the final NWCA Coaches Poll, giving the MAC six of the nation's Top 31 teams. The Golden Flashes are No. 25 according to WrestlingReport.com and No. 28 in the Media Dual Impact Index. Seven Flashes were among the Top 33 in the final NCAA Coaches Panel.

Ian Miller is tied for fourth place among Kent State's career pin leaders with 29. Six of Kent State's dual wins were by 15 points or more. Nine of the Flashes' losses came against teams ranked in the Top 16 of the final coaches poll. Two of those losses came on tiebreakers.

Huskies Prepare for MAC Championships

NIU hopes to grab at least one of MAC's 41 NCAA auto bids

DeKALB, Ill. ? With the regular season behind them, the Northern Illinois University wrestling team starts postseason action this weekend at the 2014 Mid-American Conference Championships.

The tournament starts Saturday, March 8, at 11 a.m. CT inside Kent State's M.A.C. Center and concludes with placing matches Sunday, March 9.

"(The MAC is) arguably the second-toughest and deepest conference in the country with nine teams with the addition of Missouri, Northern Iowa and Old Dominion - all nationally-ranked teams with several nationally-ranked individuals," said NIU head coach Ryan Ludwig. "Without question, our tournament has become more tough and more deep and we're excited for that."

The Huskies wrapped up the regular season Feb. 23 with a 20-14 win at Buffalo. After falling into an early deficit, NIU rallied with wins in six of the final seven bouts. Key to that comeback was redshirt junior Sam Bennett, whose technical fall win at 165 pounds forged an 11-11 tie.

NIU enters this weekend looking for their 42nd MAC individual champion and first since 2011, when Brad Dieckhaus took top honors at 184 pounds. In addition, the Huskies will look to secure one of the MAC's 41 automatic bids into the 2014 NCAA Championships. If they can secure at least one auto bid, the program will extend their streak of consecutive NCAA tournament appearances to 43 years.

Live results will be available on FloWrestling.org will provide live streaming for the entire tournament (subscription required).

Scouting the Field

With the addition of Old Dominion to the tournament field this year, the MAC Championships will boast nine teams - the most the conference has had in wrestling since 10 teams competed on the mats in 1982. The addition of affiliate members ODU, Missouri and Northern Iowa is also expected to add some extra fire to the meet, as six teams are either ranked or receiving votes in the NWCA/USA Today Coaches Poll. MU easily captured last year's tournament title, but will be challenged this year by UNI, Central Michigan and Ohio, among others for the crown in 2014.

NIU at the MAC Championships

The Huskies return to the MAC Championships this season looking to improve on last season's fifth place finish and 63.5 points, which tied them with Ohio in the final team standings. The Huskies will also be looking to register their 42nd MAC individual champion, with the last one coming in 2011 with Brad Dieckhaus at 184 pounds. As a team, the last and only MAC championship for NIU came in 1985, when the Huskies dominated the field with 89 points, topping second-place Miami (Ohio) by 40.

Morse, Scott Ranked In NCAA Coaches Poll

Sophomore Andrew Morse and redshirt freshman Shawn Scott have had superb seasons to date and the nation's coaches have taken notice, as both were ranked in the final edition of the NCAA Coaches Pall Rankings. Scott sits in the 29th spot at 197 pounds, while Morse is 32nd at 157 pounds. Heading into the MAC Championships, Morse boasts a 21-14 record and Scott maintains a 19-11 mark on the mat.

Let the Bidding Commence

On Feb. 27, the NCAA announced that the Mid-American Conference would receive 41 automatic bids to the 2014 national tournament, which ranks third behind the Big Ten and EIWA for the most auto bids among Division I's nine conferences. By comparison, the MAC scored 30 auto bids last year. The conference sports five bids each at 133, 141, 157, 174 and 184 pounds, along with four each at 125 and 149, three at 165 and 285 and two at 197.

During this span, the Buckeyes outscored their opponents, 172-92, and scored 17 bonus point wins (four major decisions, six technical falls and seven falls) compared to their opponents 4 major decisions, two technical falls and one fall.

NCAA Division I Coaches Panel Rankings

In the final edition of the Division I Coaches Panel Rankings released Feb. 25, seven Buckeyes are slated to advance to the NCAA Championships March 20-22 at Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City, Okla. Wrestlers are judged in each weight class by winning percentage, RPI and coaches rankings. So far, Nick Roberts (125 pounds), Johnni DiJulius (133 pounds), Logan Stieber (141 pounds), Ian Paddock (149 pounds), Mark Martin (174 pounds), Kenny Courts (184 pounds), Nick Heflin (197 pounds) and Nick Tavanello (HWT) are on the list.

Most Dominant Standings

Redshirt-junior Logan Stieber is the third-most dominant wrestler in NCAA Division I, the NCAA announced last week. Stieber, who averages 4.6667 points, trails leader David Taylor of Penn State (5.12) by .4533 points and fellow Nittany Lion Ed Ruth (4.7083) by .0416 points. The Most Dominant Wrestler standings are calculated by adding the total number of points awarded through match results and dividing that number by the total number of matches wrestled. Points awarded per match are as follows:

*Fall, forfeit, injury default or DQ = 6 points (-6 points for a loss)

*Tech falls = 5 points (-5 points for a loss)

* Major decision = 4 points (-4 points for a loss)

*Decision = 3 points (-3 points for a loss)

Stieber leads Division I wrestling in technical falls with nine. The Monroeville, Ohio, native has totaled 46:30 minutes of technical fall time.

Climbing the Record Books

Logan Stieber, a redshirt junior from Monroeville, Ohio, currently is third place on Ohio State's career winning percentage list (minimum 40 matches). Stieber's .935 winning percentage (87-6) trails No.1 Mark Coleman (50-2; .962 in 1988) and No. 2 Rex Holman (69-3; .958 from 1992-93). Stieber passed Kevin Randleman (108-7-3; .928 from 1991-93).

Buckeyes in the Big Ten Championships

Ohio State has captured the Big Ten title twice ? 1923 and 1951. In all, 26 Buckeyes have won 37 Big Ten individual titles with redshirt junior Logan Stieber the most recent two-time champion at 133 pounds. A season ago, Stieber was joined by his brother Hunter Stieber (141 pounds) as a conference champion. In 2012, Logan Stieber became the third Buckeye to be named Big Ten Freshman of the Year as Jim Johnson was honored in 1995 and Tommy Rowlands in 2001.

Last Time Out

Trailing No. 16 Virginia Tech, 16-14, with two matches remaining, the 11th-ranked Ohio State wrestling team received a momentum-changing win from senior 197-pounder Nick Heflin Feb. 23 in St. John Arena. Heflin, a native of Massillon, Ohio, pinned the Hokies' Brooks Morrison in 1:17 to lift the Buckeyes to a 20-16 lead. The Scarlet and Gray eventually won the match, 23-16, after redshirt-sophomore Nick Tavanello downed Ty Walz, 5-3, in the heavyweight bout.

In addition to the wins by the fourth-ranked Heflin and Tavanello, Ohio State received victories from redshirt-freshman and No. 8 Johnni DiJulius (125 pounds), redshirt-junior and No. 3 Logan Stieber (141 pounds) and sophomore and No. 13 Mark Martin (174 pounds) in the final regular-season match of the 2013-14 campaign.

Bernstein Heads to 184 Semis, McDonald Battles in 174 Wrestlebacks at EIWA Championships

2014 EIWA Championships Team Scores
2014 EIWA Championships Bracket

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. ? Junior Ophir Bernstein (Allen, Texas) surrendered just one point in two wins to advance to the 184-pound weight class semifinals and classmate Ricky McDonald (Carson City, Nev.) picked up a pair of victories to stay in contention at 174 as the Brown wrestling team competed in day one action at the 2014 Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Championships on Saturday. Bernstein can secure his third straight bid to the NCAA Championships with a semifinal win tomorrow and McDonald can earn his first trip to the national stage by winning out in the consolation bracket.

Five Brown wrestlers picked up individual victories on the day. Freshman heavyweight Ryder Cavey (Eldersburg, Md.) won twice in the EIWA Championships debut, winning 2-1 over Hofstra's Michael Hughes and shutting out Drexel's Joseph Giorgio, 5-0, in the consolation bracket. Sophomore Anthony Finocchiaro (Canastota, N.Y.) worked a dominant 10-2 major decision over Robert Ruiz of Franklin & Marshall in the 133-pound weight class wrestlebacks and senior Philip Marano (Northampton, Pa.) opened with a 5-2 decision over Drexel's Jason Fugiel at 165.

Third-seeded Bernstein's pair of commanding triumphs extended his winning streak to eight consecutive matches. The two-time NCAA Championships participant downed James Mannier of Navy, 8-1, then blanked sixth-seeded Zach Hernandez of Columbia, 6-0. Bernstein will face second-seeded Lorenzo Thomas of Penn on his home matt tomorrow morning's semifinals. The extremely competitive 184-pound weight class will send just four wrestlers to the NCAA Championships, and a victory would secure Bernstein a berth along with a chance to surpass his personal-best third place finish at last year's EIWA Championships.

McDonald opened with a signature low-scoring 4-0 defeat of Ian Roy of Harvard before falling to second-seeded Shane Hughes of Columbia, 4-2. The co-captain shook off the setback and countered with an 8-3 decision over American's Keithen Cast to remain in the hunt for one of the three NCAA bids at 174.

The EIWA Championships will resume tomorrow at 10 a.m.

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Nick Heflin and Logan Stieber, members of the Ohio State wrestling team, advanced to the semifinals of the 2014 Big Ten Wrestling Championships Saturday afternoon. The 2014 edition of the conference championships is taking place at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wis. The Buckeyes currently are in the seventh place with 23.5 points. Semifinal wrestling, as well as wrestleback action will resume at 6 p.m. ET Saturday.

Heflin, a senior from Massillon, Ohio, and Stieber, a redshirt-junior from Monroeville, Ohio, wrestled once during the first session as both wrestlers received opening-round byes in the 197 and 141-pound brackets, respectively. A No. 2 seed, Heflin made quick work of Alex Polizzi, a No. 7 seed out of Northwestern, pinning the Wildcat in 1:08. Heflin will face No. 3 seed Scott Schiller in the semifinals. Stieber, a No. 2 seed, also scored a bonus-point victory for the Buckeyes with his 15-0 technical fall (3:25) over Steven Rodrigues of Illinois. No. 3 seed Chris Dardanes is up next for Stieber.

The remaining Buckeye contingent will attempt to stay in contention in the wrestlebacks field Saturday evening. Nick Roberts (125 pounds), Johnni DiJulius (133 pounds), Ian Paddock (149 pounds), Randy Languis (157 pounds), Joe Grandominico (165 pounds), Mark Martin (174 pounds), Kenny Courts (184 pounds) and Nick Tavanello (HWT) will look to rebound from their session one setback.

After receiving a first-round bye, Roberts, an eighth seed, fell to No. 1 seed Nico Megaludis of Penn State, 12-5. Up next, Roberts will face Minnesota's Sam Brancale. Shutting out Joe Duca of Indiana, 6-0, in his opening match, sixth-seed DiJulius dropped a close 5-3 decision to No. 3 David Thorn of Minnesota. DiJulius will face Garth Yenter of Michigan State in wrestlebacks. Like DiJulius, No. 6 seed Paddock went 1-1 in the first session. First, the Buckeye senior from Warsaw, N.Y., downed Caleb Ervin of Illinois, 9-5, but was edged by No. 3 Jason Tsirtsis in the quarterfinals. On the docket for Paddock is Eric Roach out of Indiana.

Languis and Grandominico lost their first-round matches with Languis losing to Taylor Walsh of Indiana, 7-1, and Grandominico also falling to a Hoosier in Ryan LeBlanc, 7-3. Languis will wrestle Dylan Alton of Penn State next, while Grandominico will face Austin Wilson of Nebraska.

Following a 7-5 sudden victory win over Patrick Kissel of Purdue, No. 6 seed Martin suffered an 8-0 loss to No. 3 seed Mike Evans (Iowa). In wrestleback action, Martin will meet Nick Kaczanowski of Michigan State. Courts and Jacob Berkowitz from Northwestern will wrestle in the consolation bracket after Courts, the Buckeye sixth seed, beat John Rizqallah, 4-3, and lost, 4-1, to No. 3 seed Ethen Lofthouse of Iowa. A 6-0 loss to Wisconsin's Connor Medbery in the first round dropped Tavanello to the wrestlebacks where he will face Collin Jensen.

IOWA WRESTLING

Hawkeyes send 7 to semifinals of Big Ten Championships

MADISON, Wis. -- The University of Iowa advanced seven wrestlers to the semifinals of the 2014 Big Ten Championships on Saturday at the Kohl Center. The Hawkeyes recorded four major decisions and three pins in the opening and quarterfinal rounds, and sit in third place with 68 points.

Minnesota leads the team race with 77 points, followed by Penn State (70) and Iowa. Nebraska (32) and Michigan (29) round out the top five.

The Hawkeyes, who were favored in eight quarterfinal matches, went 7-3 in the quarters after winning all three first round matches.

Cory Clark (125), Tony Ramos (133), Derek St. John (157), Nick Moore (165), Mike Evans (174), Ethen Lofthouse (184) and Nathan Burak (197) all advanced to Saturday night's semifinals.

Burak recorded Iowa's lone upset in the opening session, scoring takedowns in both the first and third periods to defeat Purdue's fourth-seeded Braden Atwood, 5-4. Burak advanced to the quarters by pinning No. 12 Garret Goldman of Indiana in 3:46 in the opening round.

Ramos advanced to the semifinals with a first-period fall against Michigan's eighth-seeded Rossi Bruno. Ramos led 4-1 before securing a cradle and earning his team-high 12th pin in 1:33. Clark, Moore, and Evans all earned majors, and St. John and Lofthouse advanced with decisions.

"Bonus points are always important," said UI head coach Tom Brands. "It adds to the team and the individual. It adds to your wrestling; it adds a factor. When guys are wrestling and scoring fast, you have a good chance to pick up bonus points because you jump on things quick."

Clark, who was making his Big Ten tournament debut, totaled four takedowns and 3:59 of riding time to win 10-2 against Nebraska's sixth-seeded Tim Lambert.

Moore used seven takedowns and 2:54 of riding time to defeat No. 7 Ryan LeBlanc (Ind.), 16-5, and Evans scored two nearfall points as time expired to defeat No. 6 Mark Martin (OSU), 8-0.

St. John scored four points in the final period ? escape, takedown, stalling ? to defeat No. 5 Dylan Alton (PSU), 4-1, and Lofthouse used a first period takedown, a second-period escape, and 1:35 of riding time to top No. 6 Kenny Courts (OSU), 4-1.

Iowa fell short of the semifinals at 141, 149, and 285.

Bobby Telford (285) fell to the consolation bracket after losing to Minnesota's fifth-ranked Tony Nelson, 2-0.

Josh Dziewa (141) scored a major decision in the opening round, but was bounced to the consolation bracket with a 7-0 loss in the quarters. Brody Grothus (149) advanced to the quarters with a pin in the opening round, but was stopped short of the semis, 4-1, by Michigan's No. 5 Eric Grajales.

"We've got a lot of good things going on right now, and that's what we've got to build on," said Brands. "We've got to come back where we weren't so strong. There are guys in good positions if they get themselves match-by-match back in it. It's that simple. That's how you have to think. You can't think about the hole you are in or what could've been. You've got to come back strong, do things right and get ready to go."

Session II begins at 5 p.m. (CT) with the first round of wrestle-backs, followed by the semifinals and second round of wrestle-backs, which will run concurrently.

Notes: Attendance was 9.026… Burak's pin was his first of the season… Ramos' pin was his team-high 12th… Grothus and Clark were both making their Big Ten Championship debuts… Iowa is the seeded underdog in five-of-seven semifinal matches.

KENT, Ohio ? Sophomore Ian Miller will be competing for another Mid-American Conference title Sunday after two convincing victories on day one (Saturday) of the MAC Championships inside the M.A.C. Center. As a team, the Golden Flashes went 0-4 in overtime matches and suffered through several other tough breaks. Kent State sits in seventh place with 48 points, while Northern Iowa leads the pack with 97 points.

Miller pinned Buffalo's Wally Maziarz in the first period of his quarterfinal bout and claimed an 8-2 victory over Old Dominion's Tristan Warner in the semifinals. The top seed at 157 pounds, Miller will take on No. 2 seed Luke Smith (Central Michigan) in Sunday's final.

Joining Miller with wins in the quarterfinals were sophomores Michael DePalma and Cole Baxter. DePalma earned the Flashes bonus points with a 15-0 technical fall of Northern Iowa's Tyler Patten. Baxter worked an arm bar for near fall points twice in his 9-3 victory over Eastern Michigan's NickWhitenburg.

DePalma and Baxter will be among the six Golden Flashes competing for a top six finish on Sunday. Junior Caleb Marsh, sophomore Mack McGuire and sophomore Tyler Buckwalter all dropped their quarterfinal bouts, but bounced back for wins in the consolation bracket.

Buckwalter and Marsh each trailed 2-0 on the way to major decision wins. Buckwalter tilted Eastern Michigan's James Klosz twice in a 15-4 victory. Marsh turned Matt Mougin (Northern Illinois) with a bow and arrow and scored a takedown in the final seconds for a 16-8 win.

A stalling point against McGuire led to an eventual overtime loss in his quarterfinal against Missouri's Matt Manley. Later in the day, a first period takedown proved to be pivotal in a 3-0 win over Buffalo's Justin Farmer.

Sophomore Del Vinas earned Kent State's first win of the day with a 10-1 major decision of Northern Illinois' Nick Harrison. Vinas bear-hugged Harrison for a four-point takedown in the first and never looked back in his pigtail round victory.

Eight different Flashes earned victories Saturday, including redshirt freshman Mimmo Lytle, who claimed a 2-1 win over Central Michigan's Adam Robinson. Lytle dropped a pair of overtime bouts, one in sudden victory and one in a tiebreaker.

Sunday's action begins at noon with the consolation semifinals, while the championship round is scheduled for 1:20 p.m.

NC STATE WRESTLING: Gwiazdowski Win ACC Title, Five Qualify for NCAA Championships
Speno, Gantt, Renda, Jones and Gwiazdowski all advance to NCAA Championships with automatic bids

BLACKSBURG, VA. - Led by Nick Gwiazdowski's ACC Championship at 285 pounds, the NC State wrestling team had five individuals earn NCAA automatic bids thanks to their performances at the 2014 ACC Championship Saturday in Blacksburg. Under second-year head coach Pat Popolizio, the Pack will be sending at least five individuals to the NCAA Championships for only the third time over the past 10 years. The ACC was allocated varying NCAA automatic qualifying spots in each weight class by the NCAA last week.

Gwiazdowski was one of three NC State wrestlers to find their way onto the podium at the 60th annual ACC Championship. He becomes the first Pack wrestler to win an individual title since Darrion Caldwell in 2011, and his title is the 111th for NC State in ACC history. In addition to the Pack's title at 285 pounds, junior Tommy Gantt placed second at 157 pounds, while freshman Pete Renda was third at 174 pounds.

? Nick Gwiazdowski - NCAA Qualifier - 1st place at 285 pounds. As the top-seed, Gwiazdowski had to wait around for quite some time before he took the mat. As the Pack arrived at Cassell Coliseum at 6:45 a.m. for a morning workout and weigh-ins, Gwiazdoswki's first bout of the day did not come until past 3 p.m. The long wait had no affect on him, as Gwiazdowski scored a pin over Virginia Tech's Ty Walz 4:57 into his semifinal bout. Gwiazdowski earned ACC Championship gold when he defeated #9 Stephen Myers of Maryland in the finals, 10-4.

? Tommy Gantt - NCAA Qualifier - 2nd place at 157 pounds. Coming in as the second-seed, Gantt breezed to the championship bout. First he took out Danny Orem of Maryland with a 14-2 major decision then downed #24 Immanuel Kerr-Brown of Duke in the semifinals, 7-3. In the championship bout, Gantt came up just short against #14 Blaise Butler of Virginia, 3-2.

? Pete Renda - NCAA Qualifier - 3rd place at 174 pounds. Renda was the third-seed at 174 pounds, and was fighting for one of three NCAA automatic bids. Renda won his first round match avenging a regular season loss to Duke's Try Adamson of Duke, 7-3. Renda fell 2-0 in the semifinals, but closed out with two straight wins. He shutout Matthew Snook of Maryland 4-0, and his 5-0 win over Virginia Tech's Austin Gabel earned him a NCAA bid and third place finish at the ACCs.

? Sam Speno - NCAA Qualifier - 4th place at 141 pounds. Speno entered as the six-seed, and there were five NCAA bids up for grabs at 141 pounds. After dropping his first bout to #9 Even Henderson of UNC, Speno came back with back-to-back wins. He downed Xaviel Ramos of Duke 8-1, then his 7-2 win over Maryland's Shyheim Brown clinched his NCAA spot for the second straight year. Speno fell again to Henderson in the third place match.

? KaRonne Jones - NCAA Qualifier - 5th place at 197 pounds. Jones, the sixth-seed, dropped his opening match, but came back in the consolation bracket to down UNC's Frank Abbondanza 4-1. The 197-weight class was awarded five NCAA bids, and after a loss in the consolation semifinals, Jones clinched his first career NCAA bid with a 5-3 win over #15 Nick Bonaccorsi of Pittsburgh.

As a team, the Pack placed sixth overall with 33.5 points. Virginia Tech won the team title with 87 points, followed by Pittsburgh (67), Virginia (61.5), North Carolina (38), Maryland (37.5), NC State and Duke (18).

The NCAA will announce its at-large NCAA bids on Wednesday. The NCAA Championships will be held in Oklahoma City March 20-22.

KENT, Ohio - The Northern Illinois University wrestling team had a positive start to their postseason Saturday in Kent, Ohio, as five Huskies advanced to the second day of the Mid-American Conference Championships.

Seniors Nick Smith, Rob Jillard and Jared Torrence - along with redshirt freshmen Shaun'Qae McMurtry and Shawn Scott - will all wrestle for spots on the podium tomorrow, in addition to possible NCAA automatic bids. As a team, NIU sits in eighth place with 31.5 points, while Northern Iowa paces the field with 97.

"They wrestled hard and ground out some tough situations," said NIU head coach Ryan Ludwig about the five advancers. "That's how you win matches in the postseason. It comes down to guts and solid position. Our guys are looking to battle hard in the next session."

McMurtry started his day in a big way with an upset of nationally-ranked Zach Toal of Missouri. Trailing 3-1 in the closing seconds of the third period, the redshirt freshman got a takedown to send the bout into overtime. After some last-second heroics to force overtime, McMurtry scored another takedown in the sudden victory period for a 5-3 win. However, the Lockport, Ill., native dropped his semifinal match against Ohio's Harrison Hightower.

Similarly for Scott, it took a nailbiter for him to get out of the quarterfinals against Kevin Beazley of Old Dominion. The two battled to a 4-4 tie through two periods and Beazley chose down to start the final stanza. Yet, Scott denied the Monarch's escape attempts and fought his way to a 5-4 win courtesy of the riding time advantage. In the semifinals, the Huskie dropped an 11-1 major decision against J'Den Cox of Missouri.

Seniors Smith, Jillard and Torrence each bounced back from early losses to stay alive in the tournament. Smith came seconds away from forcing overtime against the 133 bracket's third-seeded Vincent Pizzuto of Eastern Michigan, but the Eagle's one-minute riding time advantage dealt the Huskie a 5-4 loss. The Ida, Mich., native bounced back, though, with an 8-4 victory over ODU's Michael Hayes.

Jillard's day at 149 started with a 9-4 loss against Alexander Richardson of ODU. Yet, he recovered in the wrestlebacks with a dominating 12-0 major decision over EMU's Nick Barber.

At heavyweight, Torrence had to work overtime in both of his matches. The Huskie suffered a tough 3-1 loss in the quarterfinals against Matt Tourdot of ODU. Facing Kent State's Mimmo Lytle in the consolation bracket, the two battled to a 1-1 tie in regulation and a 2-2 stalemate the first overtime until Torrence ended the match with a takedown in the second round of sudden victory to earn a 4-2 win.

Two other Huskies - Matt Mougin and Caleb Busson - each claim one victory before bowing out of the tournament. Mougin defeated Rrok Ndokaj of Buffalo, 5-0, in the preliminary round, while Busson pinned KSU's Cory Campbell in the wrestleback prelims.

The tournament continues tomorrow inside the M.A.C. Center with placing matches beginning at 11 a.m. CT.

Patrick Claims 2014 SoCon Wrestling Title at 184 Pounds

BUIES CREEK, N.C. ? Scott Patrick claimed victory over the No. 1 seed to win the 2014 SoCon Wrestling title at 184 pounds, while Kevin Birmingham also qualified for the NCAA National Championship as the Davidson Wrestling team took seventh overall at the SoCon Wrestling Championship at the Pope Convocation Center at Campbell University on Saturday.

Patrick topped Campbell's Ville Heino by an 8-3 decision to claim the title and the bid to NCAAs. Heino was previously undefeated in conference action.

Birmingham will join Patrick in Oklahoma City after finishing as the runner-up at 149 pounds. He dropped a hard-fought battle to nationally-ranked Dylan Cottrell of Appalachian State, losing an 11-5 decision to take the runner-up spot. The SoCon was awarded three NCAA bids at 149 pounds, enabling the Wildcats multiple NCAA qualifiers for the first time in program history.

"This was a monumental day for Davidson wrestling. These kids have truly earned the right to compete in the NCAA tournament," said head coach Bob Patnesky. "To have two national qualifiers for the first time is something so special for our program. All the credit goes to the guys and the staff because we're a family. We could not be happier for Scott and Kevin."

Patrick, the third seed at 184 pounds, won by fall in his first-round battle. With a double-digit advantage over sixth-seeded Hardy Hendren of VMI, Patrick controlled the entire bout and pinned Hendren in the waning minutes of the second period for his ninth of the season. He moved on to face second seed Jack Duane of The Citadel, and dominated most of that bout as well. After leading 4-2 midway through the second, Patrick went for takedown after takedown to work his way to an 11-4 decision and a spot in the finals.

Seeded second at 149, Birmingham nearly pinned seventh-seeded Tyler Ziegler of Gardner-Webb in the first period but just missed out. He was able to send him to the mat in the closing minutes of the second period, tying the school record with his 14th pin of the season and advancing to the semifinals. Birmingham then worked his way to an 11-8 decision over No. 3 Matt Frisch, who spent part of the season national ranked, to punch his ticket to the finals.

The fifth-seeded Anthony Elias pulled the Wildcats' first upset of the day at 133 pounds, earning a 10-6 decision over fourth-seeded Chris Johnson of ASU to advance to the semifinals. Elias battled top-seed Nick Soto of Chattanooga in the semifinals, trailing 10-0 after the first period. However, he suffered and injury and was forced to withdraw soon after, ending his day.

After taking a first-round loss by 10-1 major decision to No. 2 Tyler Walker of Campbell, Philip Elias was able to stay in the hunt for third at 125 pounds with a consolation quarterfinal win. He pinned UTC's Byron Smith, who entered the tournament as the sixth overall seed, in just 3:20 to advance to the consolation semifinals. However, Elias fell to fourth-seeded Cortez Starkes of Gardner-Webb by an 8-2 decision in the following round.

The potential dark horse at 197 pounds, Ian Solcz found himself the fifth seed after just one prior career match at that weight. Solcz battled fourth-seeded Kacee Hutchingson of Appalachian State to the bitter end before dropping a 7-5 decision to the Mountaineers. Solcz bounced back in the consolation quarterfinals, winning an impressive 8-3 decision over Garrison Matthews of Campbell, who entered the day as the eighth overall seed. Looking for two in a row, Solcz found himself trailing SIUE's Josh Woods through two periods. A quick reversal in the third tied the bout at 1-1, forcing a sudden victory period. The two battled it out, with the third-seeded Woods eventually working his way to the takedown to take the bout by a score of 3-1 over Solcz.

The Wildcats took seventh place with 29 points, with SIUE narrowly edging them out for sixth at 30.5 points. Chattanooga won the team title with 88 points and three individual champions, followed by The Citadel in second with 78.5 points and a trio of individual winners.

Patrick and Birmingham will head to Oklahoma City for the 2014 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championship hosted by the Oklahoma Sooners March 20-22 at Chesapeake Energy Arena. Their seeds and opponents are to be determined.

PETROV, STOLFI ADVANCE TO SEMIFINALS AT EIWA CHAMPIONSHIPS
Bison in 15th Place After Day One of Conference Championships

PHILADELPHIA, PA. ? Strong performances by Paul Petrov and Joe Stolfi highlighted the first day of the EIWA Championships for the Bucknell wrestling team Saturday at The Palestra. Petrov, a sophomore who made it to the 133-pound semifinals in 2013, advanced to the semifinals of the 125-pound bracket, while two pins by Stolfi helped him advance to the semis of the 285-pound bracket. Freshman Victor Lopez is also alive in the consolation bouts of the 149-pound bracket and has guaranteed himself at least an eighth-place finish.

In addition to keeping a chance at a finals berth alive, the fourth-seeded Petrov earned an automatic berth to the NCAA Championships, which will be held in two weeks in Oklahoma City, Okla. The top six placewinners in the 125-pound bracket earns berths to NCAAs and Petrov can finish no lower than sixth. This will be the first career NCAA appearance for Petrov, who is now 30-7 on the year and has won nine consecutive bouts.

Stolfi, who placed third at last year's EIWA Championships, is in the semifinals for the first time in his career. The second-seeded heavyweight pinned opponents from Columbia and Princeton, breaking a tie atop Bucknell's single-season falls list with Brian Pitzer. Stolfi now has 22 pins this year and 31 in his career, placing him fifth on that ledger.

The top four grapplers at 285 pounds earn NCAA berths, meaning Stolfi needs just one victory Sunday to earn his second consecutive automatic NCAA invitation.

The sixth-seeded Lopez was 2-1 Saturday with his lone loss to the third-seeded wrestler in his bracket. He ended up posting decisions against American's Cole Mosely and Army's Mark Marchetti. Lopez, who is 23-17 this year, needs victories in his first two bouts Sunday to guarantee a top-four finish in his weight class and an automatic berth to the NCAA Championships.

Bucknell had seven other wrestlers in action on Saturday. Grim Gonzalez (133), Ray Schlitt (157), Rustin Barrick (165), Robert Schlitt (174) and Tyler Lyster (197) each posted at least one win and advanced to round four in the consolation brackets of their respective weight classes. Round four is one spot from guaranteeing a top-eight finish and becoming a placewinner. Lyster had the most victories of any Bison, going 3-2 on the day.

Petrov and Stolfi still have a chance to join Andy Rendos (2010 ? 165 pounds) and Kevin LeValley (2011 ? 149 pounds) as Bison to win individual EIWA titles.

Bucknell is listed 15th in the 18-team standings with 35.0 points. Seven-time champion Cornell is in first with 92.0 points and seven wrestlers alive in the championship brackets, while Lehigh is in second with 62.5 points. The Bison defeated Lehigh in a dual match this past November.

The EIWA Championships will continue Sunday. Championship semifinals, consolation round five, consolation semifinals and consolation finals will take place 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m. The championship finals are slated for 4 p.m.

16th-Ranked Virginia Tech Claims 2014 ACC Wrestling Championship

Host Hokies, Led by Tournament MVP Devin Carter, Win Second Straight ACC Wrestling Title

BLACKSBURG, VA.?Host Virginia Tech, led by junior Devin Carter who was named the ACC's Most Valuable Wrestler, won three of the first four championship bouts and went on to claim its second straight Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestling Championship Saturday night at Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg, Va.

The Tournament was the 60th Annual Wrestling Championship held by the ACC.

Before a crowd of over 2,344 fans at Tech's Cassell Coliseum, Virginia Tech scored 87 points to outdistance Pitt (67), Virginia (61.5), North Carolina (38.0), Maryland (37.5), NC State (33.5), and Duke (18).

Tech, ranked 16th nationally, and coached by Kevin Dresser, received a boost in their lineup just before the Tournament as Carter, who is 14-0 on the year, was given medical clearance to wrestle after missing more than two months due to the hamstring injury.

The Hokies used strong efforts in the consolation rounds to claim a 10-point lead

In the Tournament heading into the championship round as Chris Moon (165), Nick Vetterlein (184) and Ty Walz (Hwt.) all earned third-place finishes.

"Today, 10 guys came together and had an awesome day," said Dresser . "It is all about how you finish in this sport and we finished the ACC season with an almost-perfect day. We're going to enjoy this one for a while and then head off to Oklahoma City.

"But the future around here is extremely bright for Virginia Tech wrestling. This crowd today was awesome. They got into it and got loud. I told my guys for the last two weeks that they needed to show some emotion after matches. I needed to see some fist pumps and some flexing and some celebrating because wrestling is a long season and that's what the end of the season is all about. I knew having it in Cassell Coliseum that it would be extremely loud all day and the fans didn't disappoint."

Pitt, ranked 10th nationally in their first season under coach Jason Peters, placed five wrestlers in to the championship finals but failed to capitalize on that advantage as Carter and Zach Neibert at 149 claimed wins over Pitts Edgar Bright and Mikey Racciato, respectively.

The Panthers, who were undefeated in six ACC dual meets to take the ACC regular season title, received only a win from Tyler Wilps (Oakdale, Pa.) at 174 pounds.

North Carolina's Nathan Kraisser (Ellicott City, Md.) got Pitt off to a rough start by defeating Pitt's Anthony Zanetta with a 5-3 sudden win in overtime if the 125-pound championship match.

Virginia Tech freshman Dennis Gustafson (Woodbridge, Va.) then set the tone for the Hokies with a dominating 11-0 major decision at 133 over Maryland's Tyler Goodwin.

The Hokies' Carter (Christiansburg, Va.), in only his second match since suffering a major hamstring injury which required surgery, captured a hard-fought 6-1 win over Pitt's Edgar Bright. It was the third ACC title for Carter, a junior, who previously had won league crowns in 2011 and 2012 at 133 pounds. He becomes the 41st wrestler in league history to win three individual titles, the 21st to do so in more than one weight class.

He was named the Tournament MVP in voting by the ACC head coaches.

"It's a nice, sentimental award, but Dennis Gustafson deserves this as much as I do," Carter said. "He's a true freshman who put up bonus points in all three matches and won 11-0 in the finals. Three weeks ago, I thought I'd be a spectactor along with everyone else at this event and to do all this, capped by the Outstanding Wrestler award, is just amazing."

He becomes the fifth Virginia Tech wrestler and third straight to be named the ACC's Wrestling Tournament MVP joining Jon Bonilla-Bowman (2007), Matt Epperly (2008), Pete Yates (2012) and Jarrod Garnett (2013).

Virginia Tech's 149-pound senior Zach Neibert (Dayton, Ohio) kept the momentum going for the Hokies with a dramatic 3-1 sudden victory in overtime against Pitt's Mikey Racciato to put a strong hold on the championship.

In all, Tech had four individual champions as senior Chris Penny (Virginia Beach, Va.) downed Virginia's Zach Nye, 10-6, at 197 pounds to join Gustafson, Carter and Neibert in the winners

Virginia's Nick Sulzer (Cleveland, Ohio), the nation's No. 2-ranked wrestler at 165 pounds was one of two Cavaliers to claim titles. Sulzer improved to 32-1 on the year with a 7-1 decision over North Carolina sophomore John Michael Staudenmayer. Blaise Butler (Belvidere, Ill.) also captured the title at 157 by downing NC State's Thomas Gantt, 3-2.

Maryland Jimmy Sheptock (Northhampton, Pa.), the nation's top-ranked wrestler at 184 pounds joined Carter in winning his third ACC wrestling title, when he took a 3-1 decision of Pitt's Max Thomusseit. Thomusseit entered the Tournament ranked fifth nationally. Sheptock captured the 174-pound conference title in 2012, then won in 2013 at 184. Sheptock improved to 27-0 on the year with the win, his second of the year against Thomusseit. He is the 42nd ACC wrestler to win three individual titles and the 22nd to do it in more than one weight class.

NC State's Nick Gwiazdowski (Delanson, N.Y.), the nation's third-ranked heavyweight, continued his winning ways, downing two-time ACC champion Spencer Myers, 10-4, in the final match of the night. Gwiazdowksi is now 37-2 on the year.

Both the ACC individual champions and runners-up were also named to the All-ACC wrestling team and a total of 34 ACC wrestlers earned automatic bids to this year's NCAA Championship, which will be held March 20-22 in Oklahoma City, Ok.

Scarlet Knights send three to the semifinals, three still alive in consolation brackets

PHILADELPHIA ? (March 8, 2014) ? The Rutgers wrestling team sent three grapplers to the semifinals and has three alive in consolation brackets after the first day of the 2014 EIWA Championships. The squad is in third place with 62 points after the first day, trailing second-place Lehigh (62.5) and first-place Cornell (92).

Redshirt sophomore 149-pounder Ken Theobold (Toms River, N.J.) recorded his second pin of the tournament, redshirt senior 133-pounder Vinnie Dellefave (Toms River, N.J.) won in TB2 and redshirt sophomore heavyweight Billy Smith (Wantage, N.J.) topped Penn's Steven Graziano to advance to the EIWA Championship Semifinals at their respective weights. The wins make them each one shy of earning automatic qualifiers for the 2014 NCAA Wrestling Championships, held in Oklahoma City from March 20-22.

Theobold and Dellefave will both have to take down the top seeds in their respective weights to advance to the finals on March 9, as Theobold will take on the top-seeded Chris Villalonga (Cornell) in one of two 149-pound semifinals and Dellefave will wrestle No. 1 Mason Beckman in one of two 133-pound semifinals.

Dellefave lost a tight, 2-1, decision at Lehigh against Beckman earlier this season, while Theobold and Villalonga did not meet in dual action on Jan. 26. Smith will face No. 4 Blake Herrin (American) in one of two heavyweight semifinals. Smith has topped Herrin twice this season, beating him, 5-4, at t he Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational (Dec. 6-7) and again in dual action, 3-1, on Jan. 10.

Smith's win in the quarterfinals over Graziano earned him some redemption after falling, 3-2, to the Penn grappler in the fifth-place match at last year's EIWA Championships.

Freshman 141-pounder Tyson Dippery (Harrisburg, Pa.), redshirt sophomore 157-pounder Anthony Perrotti (Roseland, N.J.) and redshirt junior 165-pounder Nick Visicaro (Long Branch, N.J.) all rebounded from losses to advance to the fourth round of consolation matches set for tomorrow.

All three can lock up NCAA berths with wins in their next two matches at their respective weights. Visicaro will face No. 7 Devon Gobbo (Harvard), who bested him, 7-3, in dual action on Jan. 5 at the College Ave. Gym. Perrotti will matchup with Army's No. 5 Paul Hancock for the first time of his career, while Dippery will wrestle Army's Tyler Rauezahn for the first time.

The second session of the championships will begin tomorrow at 10 a.m. and run until 2:30 p.m., featuring the Championship Semifinals, Consolation Fourth Round, Consolation Semifinals and Consolation Finals. The Championship Finals will begin at 4 p.m. following the EIWA Hall of Fame Inductions at 3:45 p.m.

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? A pair of Buckeyes in Nick Heflin and Logan Stieber will seek their first and third Big Ten wrestling titles, respectively, Sunday afternoon after winning their respective semifinal matches Saturday night at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wis. The University of Wisconsin is serving as hosts of the 2014 Big Ten Wrestling Championships. In the 100th edition of the event, Ohio State currently is in fourth place with 73.5 points. Action will resume at noon ET Sunday.

After two sessions, Penn State leads the field with 122 points. Iowa is not far behind with 121 points and Minnesota rounds out the Top 3 with 86 points.

Heflin, the No. 2 seed in the 197-pound bracket, is making his second-career appearance in a Big Ten championship final. In 2011, Heflin faced Ed Ruth of Penn State in the 174-pound final and dropped an 8-5 decision. In 2014, Heflin once again will face a Nittany Lion in No. 1 seed Morgan McIntosh. In semifinal action, the Buckeye senior from Massillon, Ohio, earned his 23rd victory of the season as he was a 3-2 winner over No. 3 Scott Schiller of Minnesota.

The No. 2 seed at 141 pounds, Stieber will face Penn State's and No. 1 seed Zain Retherford in his attempt to win his third-consecutive Big Ten title. Back on Dec. 15, Retherford snapped Stieber's 45-match win streak, handing the Buckeye a 4-2 loss in sudden victory. Since his conference-opening setback, Stieber, a redshirt-junior from Monroeville, Ohio, has won 13 consecutive matches. Stieber recorded his 24th victory and sixth major decision of the season after downing No. 3 Chris Dardanes of Minnesota, 9-0.

A trio of Buckeyes in Nick Roberts (125 pounds), Johnni DiJulius (133 pounds) and Kenny Courts (184 pounds) remain in contention and will continue to wrestle for a third place finish Sunday. After falling to wrestlebacks during the opening session, each Buckeye won back-to-back matches in the second session. Roberts, a redshirt-freshman from Hooversville, Pa., answered his championship bracket loss with a resounding fall in 1:05 over Sam Brancale of Minnesota. Roberts, the eighth seed, followed that performance with a 5-4 decision over fifth-seed Conor Youtsey of Michigan. Iowa's Cory Clark, a No. 3 seed, is up next for Roberts. No. 6 seed DiJulius, a redshirt-sophomore from Aurora, Ohio, scored consecutive decisions, first over Michigan State's Garth Yenter, 2-0, and then over No. 7 seed Jimmy Gulibon of Penn State, 6-1. DiJulius will wrestle Purdue's Cashe Quiroga next. A 10-2 major decision over Jacob Berkowitz of Northwestern and 6-3 decision over Luke Sheridan of Indiana lifted No. 6 Courts, a redshirt-sophomore from Harrisburg, Pa., to his 27th and 28th victories of the season. Up next, Courts will face No. 5 Domenic Abounader of Michigan.

Vying for seventh-place, Ian Paddock (149 pounds), Mark Martin (174 pounds) and Nick Tavanello (HWT) posted 1-1 records in wrestlebacks. After beating Indiana's Eric Roach, 6-1, Paddock suffered a 5-2 setback to James English of Penn State. On the docket for Paddock is Illinois' Caleb Ervin. Martin downed Michigan State's Nick Kaczanowski, 5-3, to start the second session, but fell, 3-1 in sudden victory to Scott Liegel of host Wisconsin. Finally, Tavanello used a 6-5 decision over Michigan's Adam Coon to advance to meet Iowa's Bobby Telford, but dropped an 8-0 major decision.

Randy Languis (157 pounds) and Joe Grandominico (165 pounds) were eliminated from competition Saturday night.

IOWA WRESTLING

5 Hawkeyes Advance to finals of B1G Championships

MADISON, Wis. ? Five University of Iowa wrestlers -- Tony Ramos, Derek St. John, Nick Moore, Mike Evans and Ethen Lofthouse -- advanced to the championship round of the 2014 Big Ten Wrestling Championships following Saturday's semifinal round at the Kohl Center.

Iowa sits in second place in the team standings with 121 points, one point behind Penn State (122). The Nittany Lions and Hawkeyes both have five wrestlers in the finals. Minnesota (86) is in third place, and Ohio State (73.5) and Illinois (69.5) round out the top five.

Ramos, the No. 1 seed at 133, advanced to his third consecutive Big Ten championship round with a 7-6 come-from-behind victory over fourth-seeded Cashe Quiroga of Purdue. Ramos led 4-3 entering the third period before allowing an escape and takedown. He pulled within a point, 6-5, at the one-minute mark and, after a restart with 26 seconds left, finished a double-leg with 17 seconds on the clock.

"Twenty-six seconds left you have to go to your go-to shot," said Ramos. "I may not hit it a lot during matches, but I got the double-leg. It was open and I hit it. Once I get my hand on him I knew I could finish."

Ramos' win was the first of five straight for Iowa.

"We need to continue that string of matches," said UI head coach Tom Brands. "Last year we didn't win the title, so we've got to win a title and we have to win a bunch of individual titles. We've got to win five titles tomorrow, and the guys on the backside, we have to keep them moving forward."

St. John, the No. 4 seed at 157, defeated Wisconsin's top-seeded Isaac Jordan, 4-3, in overtime to advance to his third conference title match in four years.

"Even though (the match) wasn't going my way I had to keep moving," said St. John, who recorded the winning escape with three seconds left in the first tiebreak. "I got my hips higher than his and ended up kicking out."

St. John placed second in 2011 and won the conference championship in 2012. He'll face Nebraska's James Green in the finals.

Nick Moore used two takedowns and 2:11 riding time to erase an early 2-0 deficit and defeat Minnesota's Danny Zilverberg, 8-5, at 165. Moore, the No. 2 seed, has won 12 straight matches and will face top-seeded David Taylor in the finals.

Mike Evans advanced to the finals for the third time in three trips to the conference tournament with a 3-2 win against second-seeded Matt Brown of Penn State at 174.

"Matt Brown works and you can't sit back on your heels," said Evans, who finished an ankle pick in the first period and escaped in the third to earn his 25th win of the season. "The score might be close, but both of us are looking to score."

Ethen Lofthouse punched Iowa's fifth ticket to the finals with a 5-4 win over Minnesota's second-seeded Kevin Steinhaus. Lofthouse, the No. 3 seed at 184, scored takedowns in the first and third periods, and added an escape in the second to advance to the Big Ten finals for the first time in his career.

Cory Clark (125) and Nathan Burak (197) fell into the consolation bracket with semifinals defeats. Clark was unable to rally from an early 2-0 deficit and fell to second-seeded Jesse Delgado, 4-2, at 125 pounds, and Burak gave up a reversal in the final seconds of the first tiebreak to lose, 3-2, to top-seeded Morgan McIntosh of Penn State.

Josh Dziewa (141) and Bobby Telford (285) both earned a pair of wins in the wrestle-backs to advance to the consolation semifinals.

Brody Grothus fell to Illinois' Caleb Ervin, 4-1, in the consolation bracket and was eliminated from the tournament.

The final session of the 2014 Big Ten Championships begins Sunday at 11 a.m. (CT) with the consolation semifinals. The fifth, third and championship matches begin at 1:12 p.m. (CT). The finals will air live on BTN.

Notes: Attendance was 9,405… Iowa has earned an automatic bid to the 2014 NCAA Championships in nine-of-10 weights… Grothus (149) is the only Hawkeye who will need an at-large selection to qualify for the national tournament. His RPI was 11th entering the postseason.

Monk won both of his matches by fall on Saturday, pinning Jesse Stafford of Air Force in the first period of the semifinal and pinning Wyoming's Dakota Friesth at the 4:28 mark of the championship match. The West Regional title is the third of Monk's career.

Zillmer will make his first appearance at the NCAA Championships after registering a pair of decisions to take first on Saturday. The sophomore from Crosby, Minn., won 5-1 over Monte Schmalhaus of Utah Valley in the semifinals and 8-3 over John Nething II of South Dakota State in the finals.

Knutson returns to the NCAA Championships for the second time after a 2-0 day at the West Regional. He pinned SDSU's J.J. Everard in 2:20 in the semifinals and won by a 4-1 decision over Utah Valley's Adam Fager in the finals.

Monk was named the West Regional's Most Outstanding Wrestler, and NDSU head coach Roger Kish earned the Coach of the Year award for the second straight season.

Senior Justin LaValle (133), junior Kurtis Julson (184) and redshirt freshman Tyler Lehmann (197) all dropped decisions in the finals to finish with runner-up honors. Julson later wrestled a true second place match for a spot in the NCAA Championships and lost a 3-1 decision to Devin Hightower of Air Force.

Redshirt freshman Clay Cathey and senior Tyler Diamond placed third at 141 and 149 pounds, respectively.

After all the qualifying events have concluded, the NCAA DI Wrestling Committee will meet in-person to select the remaining 40 at-large qualifiers, which will be announced on March 12. All weight classes will consist of 33 wrestlers. Last year the WWC had three of its wrestlers receive at-large selections.

Parisi, Cottrell Qualify, Mountaineers Fourth

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - After a grueling season, junior Dominic Parisi (Concord, N.C./Jay M. Robinson) and redshirt-freshman Dylan Cottrell (Spencer, W.Va./Roane County) punched their ticket on Saturday for the NCAA Wrestling Championships in Oklahoma by winning their respective weight classes at the 2014 Southern Conference Championships at Campbell University in Buies Creek, N.C.

Both Parisi and Cottrell won three matches on Saturday en route to the earn SoCon Champs at the 125 and 149-pound weight classes respectively, leading the Mountaineers to a fourth-place finish.

Top-seeded Parisi secured the first victory of the 2014 Southern Conference Wrestling championships. At the 125-pound weight class, he got the first takedown of the match and never looked back. He finished with the 9-1 victory that moved him into the semifinals.

To get into the finals, Parisi would need extra time. In sudden-victory one, Parisi got a takedown with less than five seconds remaining to earn the 3-1 decision and propel him into the finals. Parisi got takedown after takedown in the championship to win.

Freshman of the year Cottrell faced Karsten Van Velsor of Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, an opponent that he pinned in 57 seconds just one week ago. This time, Cottrell major decisioned him by a score of 14-4. Cottrell was able to advance to the finals by beating Brent Jorge of Campbell by a 6-3 decision.

Cottrell dominated the championship match against Kevin Birmingham of Davidson. He secured the 11-5 decision and found himself standing at the top of the podium.

This is the second time in two years that Appalachian has sent two wrestlers to the national tournament. Parisi was an NCAA qualifier in 2013 with teammate Zack Strickland (Muncy, Pa./Muncy) and this will be Cottrell's first year qualifying.

Other Mountaineers were also in action.

Sophomore Colin Hedash (Slatington, Pa./Northern Lehigh) lost his first match to Kenneth Radford of Citadel and went to wrestle-backs and won two straight to put him in the third game match. In the consolation finals match, Hedash had to face Radford again. Hedash would drop the match 11-6 plaing him fourth for the tournament.

Strickland faced Austin Trott of Gardner-Webb in the first round for the rematch of the January 13 match in which Strickland was the only Moutaineer to lose. Tables turned for Strickland; he got the 3-1 decision over Trott and advanced to the semifinals. Strickland had to face possible the hardest opponent at the tournament in No. 6 natioanlly-ranked Turtogrokh Luvsandorj and dropped the match by a 9-3 decision. He took his second loss to Paul Duggan of Campbell.

Freshman Kacee Hutchinson (Candler, N.C./Enka) also won his first match over Ian Solcz of Davidson but faced a familiar face in Scott Boykin of Chattanooga who he faced multiple times in high school. Hutchison dropped the match and dropped down to the consolation semifinals. He then lost the second match of the night.

Senior Chris Johnson (Hillsborough, N.C./Orange) lost his first match of the day but responsded with a first-period fall (2:47) in the consolation quarterfinals against Michael Flora of VMI. He lost his next match.

Delgado to Compete for Big Ten Title

Eight other Illini remain alive in consolation bracket

MADISON, Wis. ? The Fighting Illini wrestling team finished day one of the 2014 Big Ten Championships with defending conference champion Jesse Delgado (125) advancing to tomorrow's championship bout. Eight Illini remain alive in the consolation bracket, including five in the consolation semifinals. The Orange & Blue currently sit in fifth-place with 69.5 points.

No. 2 Jesse Delgado defeated No. 3 Cory Clark of Iowa in the championship semifinals to advance to tomorrow's final, where he'll square off against top-seeded Nico Megaludis of Penn State. It will be the sixth career meeting between the two, with the Nittany Lion claiming the most recent victory, a 5-4 decision in January. Delgado defeated Megaludis in last year's conference semifinals, then again in the finals of the NCAA Championships.

"It's great for Jesse and for our program," said head coach Jim Heffernan. "He's a competitive kid and he continues finding ways to win against top guys at that weight. I don't think the history between those two will impact the match in any way. They are two great wrestlers that are exciting each time they wrestle."

Earlier in the day, No. 5 Jackson Morse defeated No. 4 Dan Yates (MICH) to advance to the 165-pound championship semifinals. He squared off against top-seeded David Taylor of Penn State, but was pinned in the first period to move to the consolation bracket. He'll face Northwestern's Pierce Harger (No. 3) in tomorrow's consolation semifinals.

Zane Richards (133), Steven Rodrigues (141), Tony Dallago (174) and Nikko Reyes (184) each won two consolation matches today to advance to tomorrow's consolation semifinals. A win in the semifinals will advance them to the third-place match, while a loss will move them to the battle for fifth-place. Caleb Ervin (149), Zac Brunson (157), and Mario Gonzalez (197) dropped their consolation semifinal matches and will compete for seventh place tomorrow. Christopher Lopez (HWT) dropped his second-round consolation bout, but remained alive due to extra matches being added for NCAA qualification purposes. He squared off against top-seeded Adam Coon for a spot in tomorrow's ninth-place bout, but dropped the 2-0 decision to end his tournament run.

"The fact that there are eight wrestlers remaining in consolation is huge not only for the team, but also for the wrestlers themselves," said Heffernan. "Every win matters at this point and can help our seeding at the NCAA tournament. Our guys have competed very hard and we had a successful round tonight."

The third session of the 2014 Big Ten Wrestling Championships will begin at 11:00 a.m. CT tomorrow, and will include the consolation semifinals, as well as seventh-place matches. The championship, third-place and fifth-place bouts will begin at 1:12 p.m. CT.

RUWR Earns Three Automatic Bids to 2014 NCAA Championships

Scarlet Knights finish third for second time in the last four seasons

PHILADELPHIA ? (March 9, 2014) ? The Rutgers wrestling team finished in third place out of 18 teams and qualified three wrestlers for the 2014 NCAA Wrestling Championships in the program's final EIWA Championships appearance Sunday at the Palestra.

Redshirt sophomore Billy Smith (Wantage, N.J.) posted the best finish on the squad, ending his day as runner-up at heavyweight. He and No. 2 Joe Stolfi (Bucknell) battled all match, as Stolfi took the lead for good with nearly a minute remaining in the third period, scoring an escape and takedown to make it 8-7. He rode Smith out for the 9-7win, giving Smith the runner-up finish.

As a team, the Scarlet Knights tallied 91 points for third place, ending the day with six place-winners. The third-place finish was the second of the Goodale era and first since the 2010-11 season, when RU 165-pounder Scott Winston was crowned EIWA Champion. Rutgers sent nine grapplers to the podium in the 2013 EIWA Championships, hosted by the Scarlet Knights at the RAC. T

Along with Smith, two other grapplers earned automatic NCAA Championship qualifying bids. An injury default gave sophomore 149-pounder Ken Theobold (Toms River, N.J.) a third-place finish at 149 pounds, and a reversal and near fall as time expired in the third period sealed an 11-7 win for redshirt sophomore Anthony Perrotti (Roseland, N.J.) in 157-pound third place match.

The three Scarlet Knights punched their ticket to the 2014 NCAA Wrestling Championships in Oklahoma City from March 20-22 earlier in the tournament, however, as Smith advanced to the heavyweight final with a 2-1 win against No. 4 Blake Herrin (American). Theobold cemented his spot at nationals with a 9-1 win in his consolation semifinal, while Perrotti advanced by injury default to seal his automatic NCAA bid.

The program has qualified at least two wrestlers for nationals in all seven season of head coach Scott Goodale's tenure.

For those wrestlers who did not earn automatic bids ? redshirt senior 133-pounder Vinnie Dellefave (Toms River, N.J.), freshman 141-pounder Tyson Dippery (Harrisburg, Pa.) and redshirt junior 165-pounder Nick Visicaro (Long Branch, N.J.) ? their fate will be decided on Wednesday, March 12, when the NCAA announces the four at-large qualifiers for each weight.

Theobold took it to the No. 1 seed Chris Villalonga (Cornell) in the 149-pound EIWA Championship Semifinals, but lost a hard-fought match, 3-1. After falling into consolations, Theobold notched wins in his next two bouts to finish third at 149 pounds. The EIWA place-winner is his second at Rutgers after the Toms River HS South product finished sixth last season.

Perrotti pinned his way through the 157-pound EIWA Consolation Fourth Round to move one win away from locking up an NCAA Championships at-large bid. He held a 6-1 lead over Army's Paul Hancock before locking up the fall at the 1:19 mark.

After qualifying for the NCAA Championships courtesy of an injury default by No. 3 Joey Napoli (Lehigh), Perrotti followed up with a thrilling win over the No. 2-seeded Brian Realbuto (Cornell), scoring on a reversal and near fall as time expired to record a third-place finish. Perrotti also exacted some revenge against Realbuto, who topped him, 6-1, in dual action earlier this season (Jan. 26).

Dellefave led, 3-2, against No. 2 Mark Grey (Cornell) with less than 30 seconds remaining in the final period in his 133-pound third place match, but the Toms River East HS product got caught, turned and pinned by Grey with 18 seconds left to finish in fourth place. The place-winner is the second for Dellefave in his RU career, after he took third at the EIWA Championships last season.

Dellefave will not qualify automatically for the NCAA Championships, as one of the league's automatic bids was withdrawn. He will only qualify if he is able to receive one of four at-large bids available at 133 pounds.

Dellefave was narrowly edged by top-seeded Mason Beckman (Lehigh), 2-1, in the 133-pound EIWA Championship Semifinals, but sealed a tight, 3-2 win against No. 7 Jeffrey Ott (Harvard) in the consolation semifinals to move into the third-place bout.

Dippery suffered a fall in his fifth-place bout against No. 2 Mike Nevinger (Cornell), finishing the 2014 EIWA Championships in sixth place and narrowly missing out on the final NCAA allocation at his weight.

Dippery won by tech fall in the EIWA Consolation Fourth Round, defeating Tyler Rauezahn (Army), 20-4, to move one win shy of advancing to Oklahoma City for the 2014 NCAA Wrestling Championships. But No. 9 Tyler Scotton (Boston University) did not make things easy for Dippery, sending him to the fifth-place match with a 5-4 decision. Dippery surged late, but could not score the takedown he needed to earn a spot in the third place match.

He can still qualify for nationals if he is able to receive one of four at-large bids available at 141 pounds.

Visicaro defeated Binghamton's Vincent Grella, 8-1, with 3:32 of riding time to become RU's sixth place-winner of the tournament, ending the EIWA Championships in seventh place.

Visicaro fell, 14-4, to Harvard's Devon Gobbo in the EIWA Consolation Fourth Round, ending his run at a 165-pound NCAA Championships automatic qualifier. A 2013 NCAA qualifier, Visicaro can still receive an at-large bid to compete in Oklahoma City from March 20-22. The seventh-place finish is the second EIWA place-winner of Visicaro's career, as he finished fifth at 165 pounds last season at the EIWA Championships to earn an automatic NCAA bid.

The Scarlet Knights will train for two weeks until Theobold, Perrotti, Smith and potentially more RU grapplers head to Oklahoma City, Okla., to compete in the 2014 NCAA Wrestling Championships.

Big Ten Championships Wrap Up

MADISON, Wis. - Three Hoosiers claimed the right to compete in the 2014 NCAA Wrestling Championships, qualifying with automatics bids based on their performances at this weekend's Big Ten Championships. Ryan LeBlanc can start packing their bags for Oklahoma City.

Hoosier heavyweight Adam Chalfant reached the title bout before falling, 2-1, in a tiebreaker to two-time defending national champion Tony Nelson of Minnesota. The Big Ten heavyweight runner-up will enter NCAA action with an overall record of 25-3; all three defeats coming in extra time. Chalfant and Nelson have now split a pair of meetings this season as Chalfant topped the Gopher in Minnesota during the regular season dual.

Walsh started his Day Two by nearly enacting revenge on Wisconsin's Isaac Jordan. It was Jordan winning by a slim margin in the regular season meeting, 2-1, before getting all he could handle once again on Sunday in the consolation semifinals. Jordan was able to get past Walsh in sudden victory, 2-1. Walsh then received a medical forfeit from Dylan Ness to claim fifth place.

LeBlanc did just enough to guarantee his slot in the 165-pound field at nationals, finishing in eighth place at Big Tens. During the conference tournament, LeBlanc secured his 100th career win and moved within four W's of cracking the all-time top-10 at IU for wins in a season. The senior out of New York has racked 35 victories this season.

In addition to the three Hoosiers qualified above, 184-pounder Luke Sheridan placed in the top-8 as well. With just seven automatic bids in his weight class, the 2013 NCAA Qualifier must await his fate until later this week when the NCAA committee's 40 at-large selections are announced. He's put together a worthy resume that includes an overall mark of 27-14 and a pair of conquests of nationally-ranked foes.

DAY ONE RECAP

Three Hoosier grapplers claimed their bids to the NCAA Championships on Day One of the Big Ten Championships, including heavyweight Angel Escobedo brought back three straight from 2008-10.

Chalfant posted a pair of victories to reach the heavyweight finals, capped off with a 3-2 decision over Northwestern's Mike McMullan. It marks Chalfant's second triumph over the Wildcat this season, posting a 10-4 decision in the dual match. Following a first round bye, Chalfant topped Connor Medberry (Wisconsin), 7-2, to set up the semifinals meeting with McMullan. Awaiting Chalfant in the championship bout is two-time defending national champion Tony Nelson of Minnesota.

Taylor Walsh punched his NCAA ticket as well, winning three of four bouts at 157 pounds. The Cherry Hill, N.J., native remains in contention for third place after wins over Randall Languis (Ohio State), Roger Wildmo (Michigan State) and Zach Brunson (lllinois). The besting of Brunson came via a first period pin (1:14). It added to his school record 25 falls this season and pulled Walsh within one of tying Viktor Sveda (1998-2002) for the career IU record of 47 pins.

165-pounder Ryan LeBlanc has guaranteed his spot in Oklahoma City as well, notching two Day One victories to run his career wins total to 100. He will wrestle for seventh place on Sunday thanks to wins over Joe Grandominico (Ohio State) and Purdue's Pat Robinson. With 35 overall wins this season, LeBlanc is closing on cracking the school's all-time top-10 (39) in that category.

Luke Sheridan will compete in the seventh-placed bout as well, but needs to win it to clinch an NCAA qualification as the just the top-seven 184-pounders earn an automatic bid. Sheridan bounced the highest seed of the tournament's first round, hitting a sudden victory takedown to get past 7th-seeded Jackson Hein (Wisconsin). Two bouts later, Sheridan was back at it in dramatic fashion once again. He was able to ride out Purdue's Tanner Lynde in a tiebreaker for the 2-1 decision. It'll be a rubber match of sorts in the seventh-place bout, facing off against Michigan State's John Rizqallah for the third time after splitting the first two matchups.

Brown Wrestling's Bernstein Punches Ticket to NCAAs with Third Place Finish at EIWAs

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. ? Junior co-captain Ophir Bernstein (Allen, Texas) secured his third consecutive trip to the NCAA Championships with a third-place finish in the 184-pound weight class at the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Championships on Sunday. Classmate and fellow captain Ricky McDonald (Carson City, Nev.) narrowly missed the cut to NCAAs and placed seventh in the 174-pound weight class.

Bernstein, Brown's winningest wrestler this season, fell to Penn's Lorenzo Thomas, 6-2, in the semifinal round but bounced back to punch his ticket to the NCAAs by pinning Princeton's Brett Harner in 2:49. For good measure, Bernstein blanked Columbia's Zach Hernandez, 6-0, for the second time in two days to take home third-place honors and tie his personal best finish at EIWAs. The Honorable Mention All-Ivy selection now stands at 32-8 on the season to surpass the 30-win mark for the first time in his career.

McDonald opened the day against Elliot Riddick of Lehigh and fell 7-3 in the consolation round before surrendering by the same score to Cornell's George Pickett in the seventh place match. McDonald closes out 2014 with a 20-15 record to finish second on the team in wins behind Bernstein.

Bernstein will take the national stage on Thursday, Mar. 20, in Oklahoma City, Okla.

JOE STOLFI WINS 285-POUND TITLE AT EIWA CHAMPIONSHIPS
Stolfi Becomes Third Bison to Win Individual Crown at EIWAs

PHILADELPHIA, PA. ? On Saturday, Bucknell junior 285-pounder Joe Stolfi moved into first place on Bucknell's single-season pins list with 22. On Sunday, he etched his name in the Bison record books once again as he became the third Bucknell grappler to win an individual EIWA title.

The second-seeded Stolfi advanced to the semifinals with two wins on Saturday. He posted two more victories Sunday, including a 9-7 decision over top-seeded Billy Smith (Rutgers) in the title bout.

Stolfi joins Andy Rendos (2010 ? 165 pounds) and Kevin LeValley (2011 ? 149 pounds) as Bucknell wrestlers to win EIWA crowns.

"Joe wrestled a very impressive tournament," praised Bison head coach Dan Wirnsberger. "He wrestled a consistent tournament. I am proud of him and how he represented Bucknell University and our program. The fact that he was able to bring home a third EIWA championship for our young program means a lot to us.

"His late performance in the final shows a lot about the consistency he has wrestled with all year. He wrestled with grit and determination. He executed well and scored points when everybody in the building knew he needed to score points and that is difficult."

Stolfi trailed Smith 5-4 entering the third period. An early takedown in the third staked Smith, who entered the weekend with a 22-5 record this season, to a 7-5 advantage. Stolfi concluded the period with an escape, a takedown and the riding time point for the two-point win.

In addition to winning the EIWA title on Sunday, Stolfi secured his second consecutive automatic berth to the NCAA Championships. Last year he finished in the top 12 in the 285-pound bracket, one win shy of All-America honors.

Thanks to a 4-0 record this weekend, Stolfi is now 33-6 this season and has won 18 consecutive bouts. He is tied for eighth place on the program's single-season wins list.

Stolfi has now been an EIWA placewinner in two straight years. He finished third in the 285-pound weight class last March.

Sophomore 125-pounder Paul Petrov also advanced to the semifinals of his bracket, but he did not wrestle Sunday due to injury. With three medical forfeits, Petrov finished sixth, matching his 2013 finish in the 133-pound bracket, and guaranteeing him a spot in the NCAA Championships for the first time alongside Stolfi.

Freshman Victor Lopez was also a placewinner on Sunday. He had a chance to finish as high as third in the 149-pound bracket, but lost his first bout by decision and then had an injury default in the seventh-place bout. Lopez ranks third on the Bison to Petrov and Stolfi with 23 victories this season.

Bucknell finished in 15th place in the team standings with 42.5 points. Cornell won its eighth consecutive team title, while Lehigh was in second place.

Petrov and Stolfi will now begin preparations for the NCAA Championships, which will take place March 20-22 in Oklahoma City, Okla.
