GAMES OF THE DAY

Hodgson (4-1) @ Mtown (3-0). Hodgson coming off a close win over St G taking on the undefeated, but untested Mtown. Hodgson's only blemish is a loss to St Marks. They have been tested with wins over two good teams in Appo & St G. Walter is a lot of the reason for that as he has started the season 3-0 with 2 complete game 12k performances against Appo and St G. and didn't pitch against St Marks. The bats are pretty hot as well averaging over 7 runs per game. Mtown has started 3-0 but against Penn, Concord & Dickinson who are a combined 3-10 on the season. But the bats are hot scoring 33 runs against those 3 teams. The pitching wasn't too strong in the first 2 games allowing 10 runs combined to Dickinson & Penn, but Peluse pitched well in a shutout of Concord. Mtown beat Hodgson in 2014 6-5, scoring 4 runs in the top of the 7th for the come from behind victory.

DMA (4-0) @ Archmere (2-0). One of these teams will depart from the unbeaten ranks after this one is finished. DMA got 3 wins against lesser opponents, but proved that its legit coming from behind to beat St Georges 3-2 in its last game to go 4-0. Lead on the mound by Ruggerio and Danz (both 2-0), DMA has only given up 4 runs in as many games, including 2 shutouts. Their bats are also led by Ruggerio who seems to get a couple of hits every game. Archmere won big over Penn and had a solid victory over a decent Conrad team. But Archmere hasn't played now in 9 days. Rested or Rusty? Voge has been dominant pitching every inning in two complete games only surrendering 1 run total. Archmere plays CR on Saturday so it will be interesting who Voge pitches against. DMA has 2 solid pitchers available and Penn on Saturday. Archmere won last years meeting 14-7, but DMA leads the series winning 4 of 7 times. 5 of the 7 scores were by 2 runs of less.

OTHER GAMES OF INTEREST

Caravel (4-0) @ Charter (2-0). Battle of two undefeated teams should be listed in "Games of the Day", but I fear Charter who barely beat Glasgow and Delcastle to go 2-0, might be out of its league in this one. Charter had to score in the final frame of both games to eek out wins, but a win is a win and i will give them credit for playing tough in close games. Caravel, ranked #1 in the state, They have 3 close wins against good out of state teams and another close win over Sallies. Caravel may not have the studs from last year, but they seem to have reloaded yet again and are playing close scrappy games and pulling out some come from behind and last inning wins. Caravel is led by Carney, Fraley & Silan on the mound. Weber, Juhl and Adams seem to be their plate leaders thus far averaging 6 runs per game against some pretty good competition. Caravel did have to come from behind late in the game last year to beat Charter 7-4.

Cape (2-1) @ Lake (1-1). Very interesting downstate game today. Both teams want and need this early win. Cape played a close game with Dover, blew out Wood, then played a suprisingly close game, having to come from behind to beat a struggling Delmar team. Will the real Cape please stand up?? Lake got shut out by a good Central team 3-0, then came from behind to beat Smyrna 8-7. Similar to Cape, just not sure what to make of Lake either. Cape hasn't played in a week while Lake hasn't played in 11 days. Lake is led on the mound by Collins who got the decision in both games. Cape has McCoy and Elliot. But Cape has a big game with Appo on Saturday and against Central on Tuesday, so pitching decisions could be crucial over the next few days. Cape won last years matchup in extra innings.

Smyrna (2-2) @ Polytech (1-2). Both had high hopes coming off good seasons last year. Both struggled or been unfortunate to start the season and will be looking to turn things around. Smyrna has two big wins over playoff teams last year (Delmar, Ai), but are struggling this year. Smyrna also has two 1-run losses to good teams in Lake and Tech (one a come from behind loss and one by walkoff fashion). Smyrna is led on the mound by Everage & Dulin. Poly beat up on IR, then played a close one with Central before giving up 9 runs in the last inning to lose 17-7 and then losing a close one to CR. Not sure how deep Poly's pitching is since they gave up 31 runs over 3 games. Smyrna has beat Poly in close games the last three years.

St E (1-1) @ St Marks (4-0). This used to be an anticipated game. But St Marks already beat St E this year 13-2. St E struggled in its next game, finally scoring late against Newark Charter to win 5-0. Neither team has played in 9 days. This will be a tough tuneup game after nine days off and going into the tiger classic. St Marks is playing very well. Two easy wins to start the season against IR & St E, then two wins against against top 10 teams CR & Hodgson. St Marks is averaging 10 runs per game, so this could get ugly quick. St Marks pitching has given up runs, but as long as you score more than you give up, you will do pretty well.

Also playing:
Christiana @ Mckean. One of these teams will get its first win. Will Christiana have enough players?
Newark @ Tech. Newark having a disappointing start going 1-3. Tech off to a 5-1 start, winning 4 straight games.
Delcastle @ DEPSS. I'm not picturing a crowded set of bleachers.
Howard @ Glasgow. Should be an easy layup for Glasgow.
Concord @ Friends. Concord is 0-4, Friends is 2-1 to start the season.
Wm Penn @ Delmarva Chr. Penn a 1-3 start. Delmarva is actually 2-1.
Newark Charter @ Dover. Newark Charter will have a tough time trying to get its first win in its first season.
IR @ Seaford.

Looks like Archmere has both CR and St Marks on Saturday. In addition to the DMA game today. Hopefully they got more than Voge on the mound or it might be a rough few days.

CARAVEL LOST 4-3 TO CHARTER IN THE BOTTOM OF 7TH.
Heard Fraley did not play due to some type of injury.
Carney started with Silan taking the loss. Sounds like many errors for Caravel.

St. E's 3
St. Mark's 4
St. E's had a 3-0 lead after 5.5. St. Mark's scored 4 in the bottom of the 6th.

Cape 2
Lake 6

Steal Home (passed ball or wild pitch) 4th run

Hats off to Charter for hanging in. Apparently one of their players was hit in the face by a pitch midway through the game. Hope all is okay with that young man.

Caravel intentionally walked the tying run in the bottom of the 7th?? Questionable decision there with an apparent 2 run lead??

Seems to be quite a bit of parody in high school baseball this season and if you catch a team with their ace....who knows how it will all turn out....interesting season so far....

HSBASEBALLFANDE...

The only definite i have seen this season is that Hodgson with Walter on the mound is hard to beat. Walter has beaten Appo, St G & Mtown, all 3 complete games, 34 strike outs total, 8 total hits, 3 total runs allowed. Impressive stuff against 3 pretty decent teams. I don't mean to give Walter all the credit, his teammates are contributing as well hitting the ball and playing pretty decent defense.

Caravel and St Marks are still the better teams in my opinion. I don't think they are as dominant as in years past, but it seems just about every good team has taken a step back this year from last year. But I do think Caravel and St Marks are vulnerable if a team plays its best.

Hopefully fields arent too wet this weekend. There are some good games:

CR @ Archmere
Sallies @ Central
Appo @ Cape
Arch @ St Marks
Mtown @ Charter
St Marks vs Conrad at Wilson Field (Sunday)
Tiger Classic games between Ai, St E, Dickinson & St Georges
