Weather should be great…temps in the upper 70's, light Easterly winds. Currently there are no sharks to report roaming off the Delaware Shore or bay areas....so lets play some baseball.

A lot of great games today….where to go???

Archmere (11-2) @ Conrad (9-4). Archmere won their meeting earlier in the season 4-1, but that wasn’t the conference matchup…this is! Conrad can really shake things up in the Diamond State Conference with a win. Archmere has beaten DMA already, but DMA has beaten Conrad. So with a Conrad win, there could easily be a 3 way tie in the conference to end the season. If Archmere wins this one, they all but clinch the conference title since they already beat DMA and would just need to beat either Delmarva Christian and Wilmington Christian to claim its title and more importantly the auto bid into the playoffs. The other two teams in the conference that don’t win the title COULD be left out in the cold come playoff time. Archmere has won 5 straight games coming into this matchup. I would expect 6-0 Voge to take the mound in this game. Voge has pitched 5 complete games (2 shutouts and 3 games only giving up 1 run). Arch is only giving up 3 runs per game as a team, while scoring about 7 runs per game themselves. Conrad is led on the mound by Hyatt (3-3) and Bradigan (4-0). I would expect Hyatt to get the nod in this big game. Conrad is also only giving up 3 runs per game and scoring the same amount as Archmere. It was Voge vs Hyatt in their first meeting of the season, both giving up 5 hits but Archmere manufacturing more runs, winning 4-1.

Hodgson (12-2) @ Mt Pleasant (8-4). This game also could decide the conference title if Hodgson wins, but it could cause a 3 way tie if Mt P pulls this out. Hodgson has been one of the best teams in the state all season, with one of the best pitchers in the state performing lights out baseball all season. BUT, Hodgson must play without their ACE since he just pitched on Tuesday. Hodgson usually goes to Andrus (4-0) when Walter isn’t on the mound. Hodgson is averaging 7 runs per game while only giving up 2 runs per game. Hodgson has won 4 straight games. Mt Pleasant has been cruising right along this season posting an 8-4 record. They have only played 4 top 20 opponents, losing to 3 of them, with their only win a 2-1 victory over WmP. (hodgson has played 8 top 20 teams). Mt P is led on the mound by Hillsgrove, Jump and Moore. Mt P is also scoring 7 runs per game but giving up almost 4 runs per game. Hodgson had to come from behind last year to beat Mt P 7-6.

Charter (7-5) @ Appo (11-3). The winner of this game will be the Flight A champ!!!! Charter has been entirely unpredictable all season. They have had many come from behind, walk off style victories including a big win over Caravel earlier in the season. They also lost to Mtown 13-0 and struggled with every team in their conference including a comeback win over Delcastle. Charter is one of the weakest ranked teams at the plate this year, averaging under 4 runs scored per game and being shutout 3 times. Charter has been pitching by committee and have been giving up over 5 runs per game. Coupled by their 30 errors, this could be damaging going up against a team like appo. Appo is scoring nearly 8 runs per game led by Willett and Kurych (3 homers). Appo is even stronger on defense, allowing less than 2 runs per game and have only had 13 recorded errors all season. Emir Garrett is their ace at 6-1. Garrett in his 7 outings has 3 shutouts and another 2 games only allowing 1 run. His only blemish is a loss to Hodgson/Walter where Garrett pitched a great game losing 4-2. Appo crushed Charter 11-0 last year. Appo and Charter played two great 1-run games in 2013, where Charter took the regular season game and Appo got revenge in the playoffs.

Sallies (9-3) vs St Marks (11-2) at Frawley Stadium. Always a classic. Both teams should make it into the playoffs, short of a complete late season collapse. But this is for pride. St Marks won a fun game at Frawley the first go around a couple weeks back 4-3. St Marks held Sallies to 2 hits, but errors crept in to keep this one close. St Marks jumped out to a 3-1 lead after 1 and kept it that way until 6th inning were Sallies tied it up. But St Marks came back to score 1 in the 7th and hold Sallies in the bottom of the 7th. It was Hinton versus Reich to start that one. Sallies has won 5 straight since losing to St Marks the first time. They have scored 7 runs per game since then while only allowing 3 runs. Hinton is their ace, but he just pitched on Tuesday, so it could likely be Robino or O’Neill. St Marks has won 5 straight since people started predicting their demise when they lost 2 straight games. In that stretch of wins, St marks has beat top ten teams by 1 run; Sallies in the 7th, Appo in an 11 inning classic walkoff game and beat Smyrna by walkoff fashion. Reich and Gilardi have carried most of the pitching duties this year. St Marks leads the state with 6 homers this season. Since 2007, these two teams have played 17 times with St Marks leading 9 wins to 8 for Sallies. 12 of the 17 matchups were decided by 3 runs of less.

Cape (9-6) @ Poly (8-5). Poly is pretty much out of the Henlopen Conference Title battle, but Cape is right there in the thick of things. Cape would need to keep winning obviously to have a chance at the title, but more importantly have to get as many points as possible to get in the playoffs otherwise. Same with, Poly, they need the win and points in this game. Cape has won 5 straight games, including wins over Tech, Milford, IR, St G and CR. They are playing good baseball, as good as anyone at this point. Cape has scored 82 runs in its last 7 games (almost 12 per game). Even more impressive is that it was against mostly all top 20 teams. They are allowing about 5 runs per game in the last 7 games, but that isn’t a problem when your scoring 12 yourself! Polytech is playing good ball as well. They started the season 1-3, with 3 straight losses to Central, CR and Smyrna but have battled back to win 7 of its last 9 games including wins over Lake, Milford, Charter and Dover. Poly beat Cape last year 2-1.

Lake (7-6) @ IR (6-9). Lake fell back in the conference to games out behind Milford, while IR is only 1 and a half games out…BUT IR if I’m not mistaken, a team has to be .500 or better to get into the playoffs, so they must win out to have any shot. Lake just got 10-runned by Milford in its last game, and has loss 3 of its last 5. IR lost 3 of its last 4. Lake won 8-7 last year.

Central (8-6) @ Delmar (6-8). Central is pretty much out of their conference battle, so its all about the wins and points to get into the playoffs now. Delmar is only a game and a half back in its conference behind Milford, but it also has to worry about a .500 record. Central has lost too many close games this year.

Milford (8-4) @ CR (5-8). Milford is in a very good spot right now. They are a game and a half up on IR and 2 games up on Delmar and Lake. Milford has beaten all three as well!!! But Milford must play big schools, CR and Tech as conference games on back to back days which could easily be 2 losses and drop then out of first in the conference. CR unless they win out, probably has no shot at the playoffs, even that might not do it. CR started 3-1 with big wins over Tech and Poly and a close 4-5 loss to St Marks. Things looked promising. But they have since gone 2-7, most recently a 10-run loss to Cape. Arguably they have had one of the toughest schedules, 10 of their 13 games are against Top 20 teams, but they have lost 7 of those 10 games.

Wm Penn (8-6) @ Newark (9-6). Both teams have a fighting chance at the playoffs if they can keep winning and hope for a lot of bonus points.

Delcastle (5-9) @ Mtown (7-6). Delcastle has won 2 straight games. Mtown has struggled recently losing 5 of their last 7 games. Mtown must keep winning and hope for points to have a shot at the playoffs.

Concord (2-11) @ St E (6-6). Concord just trying to end a HORRIBLE season. Their worse season in well over a decade if not EVER. St E has made it back to .500 by winning 4 of their last 5. They are making a playoff run but have to keep winning, probably win out just to have a shot. A tall order considering after Concord they have Mt P, Sallies, Milford, Charter and Conrad. All teams desperately fighting for a playoff spot.

Howard @ Mckean. Sorry McKean, but I have to route for Howard to win its first game of the season. Howard lost to McKean 14-0 back in mid April though. Howard has lost 21 straight games going back to last year, the states current longest losing streak. (St Andrews is at 14).

Will we be seeing Phillips on the mound tonight? He was blessed enough to have been released from the hospital a week or two ago and the article mentioned (as well as his gofundme site) that his goal was to start/pitch for St. Marks tonight. Has anyone heard anything since?

Wow, Milford loses 8-0 to CR on Thursday and then turns around and beats Sussex Tech 8-5 today!
