Tom Dempsey, the former N.F.L. kicker born without toes on his right foot who in November 8,1970
— after a long night of drinking and debauchery in the French Quarter of New Orleans — set the league record for the longest field goal in a regular-season game. The 63-yard kick lifted the New Orleans Saints to a 19-17 victory over the Detroit Lions, and in the process helped transform Dempsey into a folk hero.

Charlie, you are old enough to remember when the NFL / AFL had the goal posts on the goal line. The 1969 season was the last year for that before the merger. The Chiefs would have the ball on the 50 yard line and Jan Stenerud would kick a FG.

I think the NFL did the right thing by adopting the college goal post placement. It seemed like there were more FGs than TDs for a couple of years....

Two more great days in November, USMC Birthday and Veterans Day, and don't forget the '44/'45 Army-ND games.

"1945 was a year where America stood still. World War II was wrapping up in scary fashion. Communism began to engulf Eastern Europe. Wages started to soar for the American worker and Army won its second consecutive national championship in football. Things were beginning to look up for the country."
