Foley's tech fall is one of four bouts to go in favor of Spartans

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State wrestling team won three of the first five bouts, but were ultimately defeated by No. 7 Ohio State, 27-14, in the Big Ten opener for both sides on Saturday evening at Jenison Field House.

In its first home dual meet of the season, MSU moved to 5-1 overall and 0-1 in the conference. OSU remained perfect in dual action at 5-0 and opens the conference slate at 1-0.

The match kicked off at 125 pounds, as sophomore Tristan Lujan battled hard against No. 11 Malik Heinselman before ultimately losing a 6-2 decision to the Buckeyes’ three-time NCAA qualifier. Redshirt senior Rayvon Foley gave the Spartans its first team lead in the 133 bout, putting together a 16-0 technical fall over Will Betancourt and extending his winning streak to 15 matches.

Redshirt sophomore Jordan Hamdan posted a 6-2 decision at 141 against Klay Reeves to extend the MSU advantage. The 149 match pitted sophomore Eddie Homrock against his toughest foe yet, as defending NCAA finalist Sammy Sasso pinned Homrock in the third period to put OSU back in front, 9-8.

After an early takedown by Jashon Hubbard, sophomore Chase Saldate clawed back with takedowns in each of the final two periods to rally for a 4-2 decision at 157 and earning his team-leading 19th win of the campaign. The team lead shifted right back to Ohio State during the 165 bout, as Carson Kharchla won a 15-6 major decision over sophomore Caleb Fish to go up, 13-11. Kharchla started a run of three-straight Buckeye victories to take a 24-11 lead, as 174-pounder Ethan Smith had a 24-9 technical fall over redshirt junior Nathan Jimenez and Kaleb Romero recorded a 3:22 fall in his 184 match against sophomore Marty Larkin.

Redshirt senior Cameron Caffey gave the Spartans their fourth and final individual victory of the night, notching the 7-2 decision over Rocky Jordan, but Gavin Hoffman capped off the Buckeyes’ win by getting a 10-3 decision at heavyweight opposite of redshirt senior Brad Wilton.

Michigan State continues its Big Ten slate on Saturday, Jan. 15 at No. 15 Purdue before heading to Indiana on Monday, Jan. 17. The dual with the Hoosiers will be aired nationally on the Big Ten Network.

Head Coach Roger Chandler Quotable
“As I told the guys, we fought some adversity as a program this week with injuries and COVID-related stuff, just a lot of different things going on. I wasn't sure what we would have today, and I told the guys after the dual, nobody's ever happy with a loss, but I'm proud to be their coach the way they battled today.”

“I bump Marty to 184 to wrestle one of the best guys in the country and he didn't flinch one bit. That's the type of guys we have within this program. Rayvon continues to lead the way and we can't take for granted what he does. He's putting up bonus points every time. Chase was put in a really precarious situation, he's losing by a point on riding time going into the third period and could never break through that guy's defense, and that was pure heart never giving up out there. There's lots of things we can point to. Cam Caffey wrestled a great match, and when you have good things like that happening within your program with the adversity that we faced this week, there's no doubt that I know this team is getting better. At the end of the day, we lost the dual, but the positive is that our guys never took a step back in any situation.”

“It was good to see the faces back in the crowd that have been loyal Spartan fans for years. So that felt really good and I know our guys appreciated it.”
