Fighting Irish To Travel Far And Wide In 2014

Notre Dame to play 12 regular-season games, including five ACC contests.

NOTRE DAME, Ind. ? If you still need proof of the rapid growth of college lacrosse, look no further than Notre Dame's 2014 schedule that has the Fighting Irish playing at least 13 games in eight different states.

Not only will the Irish rack up frequent flyer miles, they will do so while competing against some of the top programs in the nation. The slate features seven teams that qualified for last season's NCAA tournament, including three Championship Weekend participants (Denver, Duke, Syracuse). The program is entering its inaugural Atlantic Coast Conference campaign and five of the six teams that comprise the league were in the NCAA tournament one season ago.

"Our schedule is going to be one of the most challenging in the country," says Notre Dame head coach Kevin Corrigan. "We're going to have to manage our guys through a season that's going to be a week-to-week challenge. We tried to address that in how we handled the offseason. We tried to figure out how much we were doing or how much we weren't doing. We know that come the spring it's going to be a mentally-taxing season in the sense of having the week-to-week competitiveness that we're going to have."

Notre Dame will open its slate Feb. 16 against Jacksonville University at EverBank Field, the home to the Jacksonville Jaguars. While this will be the first regular-season meeting between the two programs, it will be Notre Dame's second trip to the stadium that hosted Super Bowl XXXIX. The Fighting Irish opened the 2011 season with a win over Duke at the venue.

The Fighting Irish will take on annual rival Penn State Feb. 22 in the home opener. Notre Dame's first ACC contest is slated for March 1 at North Carolina. That will be the first of five league showdowns for the Irish.

A trip to the West Coast to face Denver will be next on the Notre Dame docket. The Irish and Pioneers will meet March 8 in the inaugural Pacific Coast Shootout at LeBard Stadium on the campus of Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, Calif. It will be the second time Notre Dame has played in the Los Angeles area. Notre Dame defeated North Carolina during the 2005 season in Carson, Calif.

"We are thrilled to be playing in Southern California again this spring," says Corrigan. "The Pacific Coast Shootout will be a great experience for all our guys, particularly the California kids on our roster. If the great Notre Dame/Denver games of the past few years are any indication, California lacrosse fans are in for a real treat.

"The opportunities to go to California and play at the pro stadium in Jacksonville are really cool for our program."

Arlotta Stadium will host its first ACC matchup March 16 when Virginia pays its initial visit to South Bend. A two-game road swing commences March 25 at Ohio State. The Fighting Irish and Buckeyes have met every season since Notre Dame became a varsity program in 1981. Notre Dame will then head to the Carrier Dome for a showdown with ACC rival Syracuse on March 29.

While Notre Dame and Duke have developed one of the country's top rivalries over the past few years, that contest now will have ACC implications. The Irish will play host to the Blue Devils on April 5.

Notre Dame will make its inaugural trip to Marquette April 8 and then the Fighting Irish will face Robert Morris for the first time ever on April 12 at Arlotta Stadium.

ACC regular-season play will conclude April 19 when Maryland travels to Arlotta Stadium. The ACC Championship is scheduled for April 25-27 at PPL Park in Chester, Pa. Since the league tournament takes place a week before the NCAA Championship pairings are announced, Notre Dame will wrap up its regular-season slate May 3 with a home showdown against Army.

The Fighting Irish posted an 11-5 record last season and earned the No. 2 seed in the NCAA Championship. Notre Dame defeated five top-10 teams and concluded the regular season with the nation's top RPI before advancing to the NCAA quarterfinals for the fourth straight season. The Irish fell to Duke, 12-11, in the quarterfinal round.

MLAX Alumnus Mark Frye Named To USLacrosse Baltimore Hall Of Fame

BALTIMORE ? Loyola University Maryland men's lacrosse alumnus Mark Frye '99 is one of 10 who has been named to the USLacrosse Greater Baltimore Chapter's Hall of Fame Class of 2014.

Frye was a three-time All-American for the Greyhounds, and he is the last player in school history to earn All-America First Team honors in back-to-back seasons (1998-99).

The Severna Park, Md., native was one of the most dominant midfielders in recent years at Loyola, scoring 93 goals over his four seasons (1996-99) with the Greyhounds. He finished with 134 career points, logging 41 assists in addition to his goal total.

His 93 career goals rank 11th in school Division I history, while his 41 assists are tied for 21st.

Frye earned All-America Second Team honors as a sophomore in 1997, finishing the season with 32 goals, 13 assists and 45 points. He then earned First Team laurels the next two seasons, recording 25 goals and 12 assists as a junior with 23 and 12 during his senior campaign.

Loyola won 42 games during Frye's four years as a Greyhound; his teams reached the NCAA Tournament all four seasons and advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals in his final three years.

After graduating from Loyola with his bachelor of arts in communications and media studies, Frye had an excellent professional stint and is still near the top in several career categories with the Chesapeake Bayhawks franchise. Frye played in 73 games with the Bayhawks (4th all-time), totaled 142 points (5th), scored 75 goals (8th), 46 assists (6th), 21 two-point goals (2nd) and picked up 108 ground balls (T-7th).

He also played briefly in the Canadian Football League ? he was a standout football player, as well, at Severna Park High School ? seeing action in exhibition games with the British Columbia Lions.

Frye and his fellow Class of 2014 inductees ? Lauren Aumiller Cronin, Damien Davis, Conor Gill, John Glatzel, Betsy Elder Grizzle, Kathleen Kaiser Kasabula, Deanna Blood Sandstrom, Kellie Thompson Shiley and Roger Tuck ? will be inducted to the Greater Baltimore Chapter Hall of Fame on January 18, 2014, at Hillendale Country Club.

WIDENER MEN'S LACROSSE RANKED 19TH IN LACROSSE MAGAZINE PRESEASON POLL

Baltimore, MD (Jan. 9, 2014) ? The return of one All-America and three All-Commonwealth Conference players, in addition to a standout 2013 campaign, went a long way in Lacrosse Magazine selecting Widener in its preseason poll as the 19th-ranked team in the country.

Getting senior All-America goalkeeper Mac Nestler (Chatham, NJ/Chatham) back is a huge boost for a squad that always has had an exceptional defense. Nestler a season ago was tabbed Honorable Mention All-America by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) and first team all-conference, ending fourth in the country with a 5.96 goals-against average and sixth with a .649 save percentage in notching an 11-6 mark.

Among his top games, Nestler made a career-best 22 stops at eventual NCAA champion Stevenson in the conference final and 16 saves against then third-ranked Dickinson. His play helped buoy the defense to notch three games in which it did not yield more than two goals.

Senior Robert Clemens (Aston, PA/Sun Valley) had a standout campaign on attack and was picked Honorable Mention all-league, one year after being tabbed first team all-conference. Last season, he was fifth in the league with 1.85 assists per game (27 total) and fourth on the team with 31 points.

Senior Casey Decker (Morton, PA/Ridley) also is part of the standout defense and was named Honorable Mention all-league. He ended last season second on the team with 15 caused turnovers, fourth with 33 ground balls and was part of a defense which allowed seven or fewer goals 12 times.

Widener (11-6, 6-2 CC) had yet another great year in which it played in a conference final for the ninth straight season, was ranked as high as 16th in the country and more than held its own against nationally ranked schools. The squad defeated then No. 13 Gettysburg, 6-4, on March 27 and fell to four ranked teams by a total of eight goals.

Widener opens the season February 19 at Neumann, starting at 4:00 pm.

Men's Lacrosse Makes Return Trip For Newtown Clinic

NEWTOWN, Conn. ? Twenty-four members of the Loyola University Maryland men's lacrosse program gathered in Newtown, Conn., yesterday to participate in a clinic for the Newtown Youth Lacrosse Association for the second-straight year.

Last year, then-freshman Jason Crane led a group of 14 Greyhounds to the town where weeks before lives had been changed by the events at Sandy Hook Elementary School. On Thursday, Crane and his teammates returned to lead a clinic with the youth and families who have formed a tight bond with the Loyola lacrosse program.

"It was once again wonderful to spend time with a group that become part of our extended family," said Charley Toomey, Loyola's head coach. "We hold the families of Newtown close to our hearts, and we draw from the strength that they have exhibited.

"When the youth took the field, I saw the excitement in our players' faces to work with them. It was the first time I've been able see our players after a long break, and it made me even more excited to take the field for practice on Monday. Once again, we want to thank (Newtown Youth Lacrosse Association's) Jeff Tousignant and Jim Wallace for assisting in our stay in their town."

The Greyhounds led a clinic for the Newtown players, working with various age groups from elementary-age through middle school, teaching skills and team concepts.

"For me, it was awesome because of the amount of smiles that we were able to see," Justin Ward, a senior co-captain, said. "I wasn't there last year to know exactly what it was like, but the coaches and parents talked about what their kids were able to experience. This was a great time to be with them, teach them a little bit about the game and just have fun. One of the Newtown coaches mentioned how strong the bond has become between their program and ours, and that is something that is very important to us as players."

Loyola's connection to the Newtown Youth Lacrosse Association has gone beyond the two clinics. More than 100 members of the Newtown community ? children, coaches and parents ? attended a Loyola home game last year, spending the weekend touring Baltimore and fellowshipping with the Greyhounds.

Hempstead, NY ? Hofstra Head Men's Lacrosse Coach Seth Tierney welcomed 41 student-athletes and began his eighth preseason practice camp with the Pride at the James M. Shuart Stadium complex Monday afternoon

Tierney, who is 62-41 in his seven seasons at Hofstra, returns 23 players, including six starters, from last year's 7-7 squad. Hofstra has 33 days and three scrimmages before the start of the Pride's 2014 regular season opener at Shuart Stadium on Saturday, February 15 against Marquette University.

Offensively, the Pride return seven of their top eight scorers from last year led by their top two scorers in senior attackman Torin Varn (Ithaca, NY) and sophomore Sam Llinares (Hauppauge, NY). Varn exploded offensively last season, jumping from eight goals and one assist as a sophomore to 30 goals and two assists in 2013. Llinares burst upon the scene in 2013 and led the team with 13 assists, was second with 19 goals, and finished tied with Varn for team honors with 32 points. He was named to the CAA All-Rookie Team last year. Offensively, Hofstra lost just 22 goals and 17 assists from last year's team that averaged 8.64 goals per game. Most of those points (15 goals and 12 assists) were lost due to the graduation of midfielder Adrian Sorichetti.

Defensively, Hofstra returns junior goalie and All-CAA second team selection Chris Selva (Parkland, FL). Selva ranked fourth in the country in save percentage (.602) and fifth in goals against average (7.61) while starting all 14 contests and playing all but 21 minutes on the season. The close defense took a hit with the graduation of all three starters in All-CAA first team selection Mark Mullen, four-year starter Cody Solaja and Michael Hamilton. But the Pride have returning defenders in seniors Corey Caputo (Darien, CT) and Ian Leary (Hicksville, NY), junior Jack Moorehead (East Northport, NY), deep long-stick and short-stick defensive middie groups led by sophomore Ryan Rielly (East Northport, NY) and senior Anthony Zappone (Ballston Lake, NY), and a bunch of big talented newcomers from which to replenish.

The Hofstra midfield is deep and talented with a nice combination of returnees and newcomers. Leading the way is senior Drew Coholan (Rochester, NY), who tallied a career-high 12 goals and seven assists in 2013. Junior Mike Malave (Wading River, NY) also tallied career-highs of 11 goals and three assists last season while sophomore Brian von Bargen (Wantagh, NY) tallied eight goals in his freshman season.

The Pride will travel to upstate New York to face the Orange of Syracuse University in their first preseason scrimmage on Saturday, January 25 at 10 a.m. Hofstra will also host Rutgers University and Hobart College for scrimmages on Saturday, February 1 at Shuart Stadium beginning at 10 a.m.

Elis Play at Michigan on April 19

NEW HAVEN, Conn. ? It has become the norm that the toughest part of the Yale men's lacrosse team schedule is its Ivy League contests. Such is the life in what may be the strongest conference in 2014. Four of the seven Ivy schools were ranked in the final 2013 USILA Poll and two were NCAA quarterfinalists, including the Elis, two-time defending Ivy League Tournament Champions who are currently No. 7 in the NCAA/insidelacrosse.com poll.

The Bulldogs, who are already ranked in the top 10 of two national pre-season polls and have a pair of scrimmages leading up to the regular season, open on Feb. 22 at home against St. John's. That 1:30 p.m. game is the first of six contests at Reese Stadium. The games at New Haven include three Ivy (Princeton, Penn, Harvard) and three non-league (St. John's, Lehigh, Quinnipiac).

The regular-season finale has the archrival Crimson at Reese Stadium for a 2 p.m. face-off on April 26. This, like all home games, can be seen on the Ivy League Digital Network.

The 2014 road slate, which also has three league contests, is highlighted by a first-ever meeting with Michigan on April 19. That 4 p.m. game at Ann Arbor will be played in 109,000-seat Michigan Stadium, where the Wolverines are in their third season of varsity competition as a member of the ECAC.

Yale, led by Andy Shay, The Ryan & Forst Family Head Coach, is coming off a 12-5 spring that included four and five-game win streaks, a second straight Ivy Tournament title and a win at Penn State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Elis, who finished No. 7 in the final Nike rankings and were New England Champions, came within a goal of making the 2013 national semifinals.

The Bulldogs, whose 12 victories were the most by a Yale squad since 1992, return four All-New England selections including Tewaaraton Trophy candidate and honorable mention USILA All-American Brandon Mangan, a senior attackman.

The 2014 squad, which will face six teams listed among the pre-season national rankings, is led by captain and senior defenseman Jimmy Craft, who helped the Blue rank sixth nationally in scoring defense with a 7.94 mark. He and his teammates begin competition with scrimmages on Feb. 8 (at Stony Brook) and Feb. 16 (Tufts).

Unterstein, who will play for the Blue Team and wear number 37, is entering his fourth season on the Pride staff in 2014. During his coaching tenure at Hofstra, he has worked with the defense, the face-off specialists and the man-down unit. In 2011, the Pride led the nation in scoring defense (6.56 gpga) and ranked sixth in face-off winning percentage (.622) and turnover average (13.69). As a senior he recorded a team-leading 70 ground balls while helping to guide the Pride to the Colonial Athletic Association title and the NCAA Tournament. For his efforts, he was an All-CAA first team selection, and was named the CAA Defensive Player of the Year, and the CAA Championship Tournament Most Valuable Player.

In 2007 as a junior, Unterstein earned USILA All-American honorable mention honors, and was named to the All-CAA second team as well as the All-CAA Tournament team. As a sophomore in 2006, Kevin, his twin brother Mike, and their older brother Chris combined to help lead Hofstra to a 17-2 record, a No. 2 national ranking and a No. 3 seed in the NCAA tournament. He was also named to the All-CAA Rookie Team as a freshman.

Following graduation in 2008, he became an assistant under Bill Tierney at Princeton in 2009, working with the defense and face-off specialists. He would follow Tierney to Denver in 2010 to help coordinate the Pioneers' man-down unit and work specifically with the defensive midfielders and work with assistant coach Trevor Tierney with the defense and the overall face-off game.

Re: National College News DE HS Lax

Hempstead, NY ? The Hofstra Women's Lacrosse program, which returns 10 starters and 23 letterwinners from last year's squad that advanced to the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championship Game, has started preparations for the 2014 campaign with the opening of their official practice season.

The program has high expectations for the 2014 season as the team returns its top three point scorers who accounted for 119 of the Pride's 259 points.

There is plenty of talent on both sides of the field returning for Hofstra in 2014 as the Pride returns five of its top six scorers from 2013, while the Pride also brings back its top eight ground ball leaders from a season ago, its top 12 caused turnover leaders and six of its top seven draw control leaders.

The returning talent isn't just on the offensive end, though, as the Pride's defense and goalie positions are also returning to help lead Hofstra in 2014.

Hofstra won 11 games in 2013, the first at the helm for Head Coach Shannon Smith and the second year skipper will look to lead the team to even greater heights in her second year. The 11 wins were the most for Hofstra since the 2010 team won 12 games and last season's appearance in the CAA title game was the program's first since the 2010 campaign.

On the offensive end, Hofstra is bolstered by the return of junior attacker Brittain Altomare led Hofstra with 69 points on team-highs of 34 goals and 35 assists. She also added 34 draw controls, 23 ground balls and nine caused turnovers. Riemer ranked second on the Pride in scoring with 29 points on 25 goals and four assists during her breakout junior season, while Conto added 16 goals and five assists for 21 points.

Altomare and junior defender April Iannetta will team up to give Hofstra a very dangerous one-two punch this season. The 2013 CAA Co-Defensive Player of the Year, Iannetta was recently named a preseason Third Team All-American by Inside Lacrosse after totaling 53 draw controls, 50 ground balls and 40 caused turnovers, while also adding in 12 goals and six assists for 18 points. In addition to the defensive player of the year award, Iannetta was also an Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Mid-Atlantic All-Region First Team selection and a first team All-CAA honoree in 2013.

Brittain Altomare was a second team IWLCA Mid-Atlantic All-Region pick last year and also garnered first team all-conference accolades as well. Conto will start her second season in a Pride uniform as the reigning CAA Rookie of the Year as she captured the award a season ago.

In addition to Iannetta on the defensive side of the ball, Hofstra also returns junior goalie Shelby Milne. Gregerson played in all 19 games last year and had a solid 8.40 goals against average while making 121 saves. Milne was a CAA All-Rookie team honoree after notching 30 ground balls and 23 caused turnovers in her rookie season.

Hofstra, under the direction of Smith, will look to take the next step in 2014. The Pride advanced to the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championship Game in 2013, and with a solid core of returnees and a talented group of newcomers on the roster, the goal of qualifying for the NCAA Tournament remains as the ultimate result.

Hofstra opens the 2014 campaign on Saturday, February 15 when it travels to New Hampshire for a 12 p.m. game. After a season-opening three-game road trip, the Pride will host its first home game on Tuesday, February 25 when Maryland visits James M. Shuart Stadium for a 5:30 p.m. game.

Hempstead, NY ? Hofstra sophomore attackman Sam Llinares has been named to the 2014 Colonial Athletic Association Men's Lacrosse Preseason Team in a vote by the conference head coaches, the CAA announced Friday afternoon.

Llinares, a native of Hauppauge, Long Island and a CAA All-Rookie Team selection last season, led Hofstra in assists with 13, was tied for team-high point honors with 32, and was second with 19 goals as a freshman in 2013. Llinares recorded 11 multiple-point games including five points on four goals and one assist in his collegiate debut against Sacred Heart. He began his career with nine consecutive multiple-point contests. Llinares also recorded two or more goals in games four times, and tallied game-winning goals against Fairfield and second-ranked Notre Dame. His 13 assists included two each against Princeton and Harvard. He picked up 26 ground balls including a season-high six against Harvard.

In making the All-CAA Preseason Team announcement, the CAA Men's Lacrosse Head Coaches also selected Penn State senior All-American goalie Austin Kaut as the 2014 CAA Preseason Player of the Year.

Kaut led the Nittany Lions to a historic season and was named CAA Player and Defensive Player of the Year in 2013. The goalkeeper recorded a career year in the net with a 7.37 goal against average, ranking third in the nation, while making a career-high 194 saves as a junior. The PSU goalkeeper also stopped 61 percent of shots faced on goal, which ranked second in the nation, and registered a 12-5 record in goal for the Nittany Lions. Hempstead, NY ? The Hofstra Men's Lacrosse Team received votes in the 2014 United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Preseason Coaches Poll that was announced Monday afternoon.

Fletcher Named Preseason DPOY; MLAX Picked To Win Patriot League

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. ? Fresh off his weekend training with Team USA at the Champion Challenge in Florida, Loyola University Maryland senior co-captain Joe Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee H.S.) was named the Patriot League Preseason Defensive Player of the Year by a vote of conference coaches, it was revealed on a media conference call this morning.

Fletcher joined his fellow captain, senior attacker Justin Ward, on the Preseason All-Patriot League Team.

The Greyhounds, who became members of the Patriot League on July 1, 2013, will start the year as the conference's preseason favorite. Loyola earned 13 of a possible 16 first-place votes ? teams are not allowed to vote for themselves ? and garnered 123 points to sit atop the poll.

Earlier in the week, Loyola was ranked 12th in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Preseason Coaches Poll and 16th in the Warrior/Inside Lacrosse Media Poll. Last year, Loyola finished with an 11-5 overall record and reached the NCAA Tournament.

Bucknell University checked in second in the Patriot League poll with 109 points and three first-place votes, and Lehigh University was just a point behind with 108 overall and the remaining two for the top spot.

The U.S. Military Academy was selected fourth (86), followed by Colgate University (73), the U.S. Naval Academy (56), College of the Holy Cross (42), Lafayette College (35) and first-year program and another Patriot League newcomer Boston University (16).

Fletcher and Ward were joined by 10 others on the Preseason All-Patriot League Team. Army attacker John Glesener was named the Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, and he was paired with Ward and Bucknell's David Dickson on attack. In the midfield were Bucknell's Thomas Filbotte, Holy Cross' Terry McKenna and Colgate's Jimmy Ryan. Fletcher was joined on defense by Bucknell's Jackson Place and Lehigh Ty Souders.

Army's Alex Daly was tabbed to the face-off specialist, and Navy long-stick midfielder Pat Kiernan was named to the defensive midfield spot. Lehigh's Matt Poillon was selected to the goalkeeper position.

Earlier this month, Fletcher and Ward were both selected by teams in the 2014 Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Entry Draft. Fletcher was the third overall pick, and the top defender selected, by the New York Lizards, while Ward was picked 23rd overall by the Charlotte Hounds.

Fletcher finished last season as one of the best defenders in the nation, earning All-America First Team honors from the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA). In doing so, he became the first Loyola player to earn the recognition since Gavin Prout in 2001. He is the only current collegiate player named to the U.S. National Team training roster and is vying for a spot on the squad that will compete at the 2014 World Cup in Denver.

The senior defender from Syracuse, N.Y., was the 2013 ECAC Lacrosse League Defensive Player of the Year as he finished the season with 64 ground balls, tops amongst close defenders in the conference. He also had 17 caused turnovers and was a key member of the Greyhounds' clearing unit that led the nation and set a Division I record by successfully clearing the ball 95.5 percent of the time. A noted student leader outside of lacrosse, Fletcher is co-president of Loyola's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, and he is one of 14 students school-wide to serve on the Green & Grey society, a group of student leaders who serve as liaisons to Loyola's president, board of trustees and administration.

Ward has been the quarterback of the Greyhounds' offense for the last two seasons, and as a junior in 2013, he turned in a fantastic season that earned him USILA All-America Honorable Mention and All-ECAC honors. The attacker finished 11th in Division I in assists per game (2.19) and 19th in points per game (3.88), culminating the season with 27 goals and 35 assists for 62 points.

His 35 assists ranked third on Loyola's single-season chart at the Division I level, and his 62 points were tied for fifth. Ward enters the season with 67 career assists, good for seventh at the school in the Division I era, and his 106 career points to date are 22nd. He had one of the most prolific games by a Loyola player in recent years last season when he became the first Greyhound since Gavin Prout in 2001 to score seven goals in a game, and the first since Tim Goettelmann in 2000 to post 10 points, when he tallied seven goals and three assists against UMBC in February.

In addition to their plaudits on the field and in the locker room, Fletcher and Ward have excelled in the classroom, too. Both were named to the ECAC All-Academic Team last year.

The Greyhounds get their 2014 regular-season schedule underway in just over a week when they take on the University of Virginia on Thursday, February 6, in Charlottesville, Va.

Loyola Men's Lacrosse To Be Featured On National Television In 2014

BALTIMORE ? Loyola University Maryland men's lacrosse and Ridley Athletic Complex will be featured on national television broadcasts at least three times during the upcoming 2014 season.

The Greyhounds' home games against Duke University (Sunday, March 9; 6 p.m.), Bucknell University (Thursday, April 17; 7 p.m.) and Johns Hopkins University (Saturday, May 3; 12 noon) will air live on CBS Sports Network as part of the Patriot League's continuing partnership with the network.

Loyola's game against Duke pits the past two NCAA Champions in a rematch of last year's NCAA Tournament First Round game that was one of the year's top affairs. The Blue Devils edged the Greyhounds, 12-11, in double overtime.

The Greyhounds and Bucknell were picked 1-2, respectively, in the Patriot League Preseason Poll that was announced earlier this week, and the game against Johns Hopkins is always one of the top showcases in the sport between two schools that are separated by only a mile.

In addition to the three scheduled regular-season broadcasts, Loyola could appear on CBS Sports Network at least two more times. Both Patriot League Semifinal games (Friday, April 25; 4:30 and 7:30 p.m.) and the conference title game (Sunday, April 27; 1 p.m.) will air live on the network.

Starting at noon, RU will play two game-like quarters against Hobart, before playing four game-like quarters at Hofstra.

Slated to play its first full season at High Point Solutions Stadium, the Scarlet Knights welcome back nine of their 10 starters from a year ago, as well as junior FO/M Joe Nardella (Cazenovia, N.Y.). Head coach Brian Brecht enters his third season "On the Banks," having coached three All-BIG EAST honorees in his first two seasons.

Senior D Nick Contino (Branchburg, N.J.), junior M Brian Goss (Arlington Heights, Ill.), Nardella, senior DAndrew Parrilla (Wyckoff, N.J.) and senior M Anthony Terranova (Flemington, N.J.) are the team captains for the 2014 season.

Senior A Scott Klimchak (Clark, N.J.) led the squad with 32 goals and 39 points last season. He has 86 career goals, five away from tying him for 10th all-time in RU's record book. Classmate Nick DePaolera (Kinnelon, N.J.) led the team with 14 assists in 2013, while also scoring 17 goals.

Four other Scarlet Knights scored double-figure goals last season: sophomore A Scott Bieda (Bridgewater, N.J.) with 17, Goss with 13, Terranova with 11 and sophomore M Jacob Coretti (E. Grand Rapids, Mich.) with 10.

He finished fourth in the nation in saves per game (14.00) and sixth in save percentage (.596) last season. Rutgers also returns Contino and Parrilla, who finished as the team's top-two players in caused turnovers with 24 and 15, respectively.

DeLuca Joins Duke Lacrosse Coaching Staff

February 5, 2014

DURHAM, N.C.?Duke University men's lacrosse head coach John Danowski recently announced the addition of Ben DeLuca to the coaching staff as a volunteer assistant coach for the 2014 season. DeLuca joins the Blue Devils after three seasons as the Cornell University men's lacrosse head coach.

A former player and coach at Cornell, DeLuca will work closely with Duke's defensive unit in 2014. At Cornell, the native of Rochester, N.Y., led the Big Red to an overall record of 37-11, a 16-2 mark in Ivy League play and ultimately two conference titles. He guided Cornell to two NCAA Tournament appearances and to championship weekend in 2013 where it fell to the Blue Devils in the semifinals.

Over the years at Cornell, DeLuca's players have earned nine first-team All-Ivy honors, 19 total all-league selections, including two Ivy League Player of the Year awards and one Rookie of the Year selection. He has also helped his players earn a combined 12 All-America honors, including attackman Rob Pannell '13, who was a four-time All-America selection.

Under DeLuca's tutelage, Pannell became the first-ever Big Red player, and just the fifth in the history of the award, to be named the USILA's Lt. Raymond J. Enners Award as the Outstanding Men's Lacrosse Player in Division I. Pannell also won the 2013 Tewaaraton Trophy, becoming the second Cornell player to earn that distinction. In addition, Cornell's players were equally successful in the classroom under DeLuca with five earning USILA Scholar All-America awards.

This past season was DeLuca best as the Big Red rose as high as No. 2 in the national rankings, went undefeated in Ivy League play, and advanced to the NCAA semifinals before falling to Duke. The team posted a 14-4 record overall, losing three games by a single goal.

DeLuca helped Pannell to become the NCAA Division I all-time career points leader (354) as six Big Red players were named All-Americans. Pannell then punctuated his epic career by winning the Tewaaraton Trophy, as Cornell became one of just four schools to boast multiple Tewaaraton Trophy winners (Duke, Syracuse, Virginia).

The Big Red finished the year ranked first in the country in scoring margin (5.5) and second overall in scoring offense (14.56 gpg). Cornell also ranked among the nation's best in points per game (second ? 22.28), caused turnovers per game (fourth ? 9.94), assists per game (fourth ? 7.72), ground balls per game (fifth ? 37.11), man-down defense (7th ? .750), scoring defense (15th ? 9.06 gpg.), and face-off winning percentage (16th ? .551),

In total, DeLuca spent 17 years at Cornell, including four years as a player for the Big Red before serving as an assistant coach for two seasons. A brief two-year hiatus took DeLuca away from Ithaca and into the business world, but he returned prior to the 2002 season and he was promoted to the top assistant position under Jeff Tambroni in the summer of 2003. He became the first Mario St. George Boiardi Assistant Coach of Men's Lacrosse the following year and was promoted to associate head coach following the 2007 season.

A four-year letterwinner on defense for the Big Red, DeLuca donned the Carnelian Red and White for three years under legendary coach Richie Moran, before becoming a captain his senior year under former head coach Dave Pietramala. He was voted the team's outstanding senior athlete for his leadership and dedication on and off the field. DeLuca earned a Bachelor of Science degree in nutritional sciences and biochemistry in 1998.

A native of Rochester, N.Y., DeLuca is married to the former Laurie Totorelli, a former All-American goalie for the women's lacrosse team at the University of Delaware. They have two daughters, Elizabeth and Anne.

Charlottesville, Va. | Klockner Stadium

Quick Hits About The 'Hounds

Loyola University Maryland opens its 75th season of men's lacrosse action on Thursday, February 6, at 7 p.m. when the Greyhounds face the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.

February 6 is the earliest that the Greyhounds have ever played a regular-season game, eclipsing a Valentine's Day neutral site affair in Atlanta against Notre Dame in 2009.

The game is the third NCAA Division I contest of the season following Furman-Lehigh and Delaware-High Point.

Loyola returns five starters (attackers Nikko Pontrello and Justin Ward, defenders Joe Fletcher and Pat Frazier and goalkeeper Jack Runkel), as well as two of the top four players on the rope unit (short-stick midfielders Pat Laconi and Kyle Duffy) from last year's team that finished with an 11-5 record.

This year's three co-captains were all named to the Preseason All-American teams: Fletcher (1st), Ward (2nd), Laconi (HM).

Loyola, which is in its first year as a member of the Patriot League, was picked to win the conference. Fletcher and Ward were named to the Preseason All-Patriot League Team.

Last Time Out

The Greyhounds finished their 2013 season on May 12 with a 12-11 double overtime loss to eventual NCAA Champion Duke University in Durham, N.C.

Loyola was making its second-straight NCAA Tournament appearance and ended with an 11-5 record.

Seven Loyola players earned United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) All-America honors following the 2013 season, led by Joe Fletcher who was the Greyhounds' first 1st Team honoree since Gavin Prout in 2001. Long-stick midfielder Scott Ratliff was named to the 2nd Team, while defender Reid Acton, midfielder Davis Butts, short-stick midfielder Josh Hawkins and attackers Mike Sawyer and Justin Ward received honorable mention.

Ward led the Greyhounds in points (62) and assists (35) a year ago, while Sawyer topped the team in goals (36).

Ratliff was the team's leader in ground balls (77) and caused turnovers (29), and he also scored 14 goals and had four assists from his long-stick position.

Jack Runkel was in his second year as a starter in goal, finishing with an 8.75 goals against average.

New Year, New League

Loyola officially became a member of the 10-school Patriot League on July 1, 2013, less than a year after announcing it would join the conference in August 2012. The Greyhounds joined the League along with Boston University, increasing the full-time membership to 10.

The Greyhounds will compete in men's lacrosse with Boston University, Bucknell University, Colgate University, College of the Holy Cross, Lafayette College, Lehigh University, the U.S. Military Academy, the U.S. Naval Academy. American University is also a full member of the League, but the school does not sponsor men's lacrosse.

With the addition of Loyola and Boston U., the Patriot League restructured its men's lacrosse championships. The top two seeds based on the regular-season standings will receive byes to the semifinals with the top seed hosting the championships. A quarterfinal round featuring games between the No. 3 and 6 seeds and No. 4 and 5 seeds, was added to the mix.

On The Tube

Loyola men's lacrosse will make a minimum of three appearances on national television this year as part of the Patriot League's agreement with CBS Sports Network.

The Greyhounds will host Duke University on Sunday, March 9, in a match-up of the last two NCAA Champions, and CBS will then feature the Greyhounds' Thursday, April 17, game against Bucknell University, the top two teams in the Preseason Patriot League poll. The network will also feature two long-time rivals when Loyola hosts Johns Hopkins University, on Saturday, May 3.

Both semifinal games in the Patriot League Championships will be broadcast on Friday, April 25, and the Patriot League Championship Game will also air live on Sunday, April 27.

Preseason Prognostications

As a first-year member of the Patriot League, Loyola was picked to win the conference title in a poll of the League's coaches and sports information contacts. The Greyhounds drew 13 of the possible 16 first-place votes (schools are not allowed to vote for themselves) and edged Bucknell for first.

Loyola and Bucknell were followed (in order) by Lehigh, Army, Colgate, Navy, Holy Cross, Lafayette and Boston U.

Joe Fletcher was named the Preseason Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year, and he earned a spot with teammate Justin Ward on the Preseason All-Patriot League Team.

Three Selected By Major League Lacrosse Teams

Three Loyola seniors were amongst the first 23 players selected in the 2014 Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Entry Draft last month with defender Joe Fletcher becoming the highest Greyhounds player ever drafted when he was taken third overall by the New York Lizards.

Fletcher's fellow senior co-captains, short-stick midfielder Pat Laconi (9th overall) and attacker Justin Ward (23rd), were both selected by the Charlotte Hounds. Laconi and Ward will join three of their ex-teammates ? attackers Eric Lusby and Mike Sawyer and short-stick defensive midfielder Josh Hawkins ? who were key members of the Hounds team that advanced to the MLL Championship Game in 2013.

Fletch, White And Blue

Senior defender Joe Fletcher was the long current collegiate player selected as part of one of 52 players who made up the United States Men's National Team training roster this fall. He will find out on Wednesday, February 5, if he is one of 30 players who made the cut for the team that will compete at the 2014 World Cup in Denver.

Fletcher trained with Team USA throughout the fall, playing in two training weekends, the Play For Parkinson's event in October and the Champion Challenge last month. He was one of 10 defenders on the training roster.

Three Garner Preseason All-America Nods

In addition to being the three Greyhounds selected by Major League Lacrosse teams in the Collegiate Entry Draft, senior co-captains Joe Fletcher, Pat Laconi and Justin Ward were named Preseason All-Americans by Face-Off Yearbook, an Inside Lacrosse publication.

Fletcher was picked to repeat as a First Team All-American, while Ward drew a Second Team nod and Laconi was tabbed as an Honorable Mention All-American.

Quarterbacking The Offense

Justin Ward returns for his third year as a starter on attack for the Greyhounds and will once again serve as Loyola's quarterback from 'X'.

Last season, Ward earned USILA All-America Honorable Mention after finishing tops on the team in points (62) and assists (35) and second in goals (27). His 62 points ranked tied for fifth in school single-season Division I history, and his 35 assists check in at third on that list.

Ward enters his senior season 22nd in school Division I history with 106 career points, five shy of tying Gavin Prout for 21st. He is seventh in career assists with 67, three away from creating a three-way tie for sixth with Kevin Beach and Tim O'Shea.

Running The Rope Unit

Senior short-stick defensive midfielder Pat Laconi is back for his fourth year as a "starter" on the Greyhounds rope unit. Laconi has been one of the Greyhounds' top two defensive midfielders since his freshman year between the lines.

Laconi has been lauded by Loyola and opposing coaches as one of the best one-on-one short-stick in the nation, finished last year second on the Greyhounds in caused turnovers with 20. He also picked up 24 ground balls and showed his offensive ability in transition, logging 10 points on four goals and six assists.

Over his four years as a Greyhound, Laconi has caused 41 turnovers and picked up 58 ground balls.

Fletch Lives

Senior defender Joe Fletcher has been one of the top close defenders in the game since his first year as a starter in 2012, his sophomore year. That year, he earned All-Tournament honors after Loyola won the NCAA Championship, and he continued his outstanding play as a junior.

Last year, Fletcher caused 17 turnovers and picked up 64 ground balls for the Greyhounds, a season after finishing with 26 and 41. He has played in all 48 games of his collegiate career.

Fletcher was the third overall selection of the 2014 Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Entry Draft by the New York Lizards, and he was one of 52 players competing with the United States Men's Lacrosse National Team for a spot on this summer's World Cup roster.

In addition to his exploits on the field, Fletcher was an ECAC All-Academic Team honoree, and he was picked as one of 14 students campus-wide to be named to the school's Green & Grey Society, a group of student leaders that serve as liaisons to Loyola's president, board of trustees and administration.

Between The Pipes

Senior goalkeeper Jack Runkel will lead the Greyhounds defense from between the pipes for his third season as a starter. Over his two seasons as a starter ? Runkel stepped into the starting 10 three games into the 2012 season ? he has played to a 7.98 goals against average and .546 save percentage.

In last year's NCAA First Round against eventual champion Duke, Runkel made a career-high 22 saves, many at point-blank range in one-on-one opportunities by the Blue Devils. He was a member of the 2012 NCAA All-Tournament Team, as well.

Up Next

The Greyhounds will continue to play highly ranked teams to start the season, as their next game comes on Saturday, February 15, in State College, Pa., against current No. 9/7 Penn State University.

This Week...

The Air Force lacrosse team opens the 2014 season this weekend, Feb. 8, when it hosts fourth-ranked in-state rival Denver in a 1:00 p.m. contest at Falcon Stadium.

Last Meeting: Denver 11, Air Force 10 - OT (3/26/13 @ Denver)

Scouting the Falcons...

Air Force, which finished the 2013 season with a 7-7 overall record, takes the field this season with 34 returning letterwinners and nine of 10 starters from last year. The Falcons, who return over 94 percent of their points from 2012, are led on the offensive end by seniors Mike Crampton and Tommy McKee and junior Keith Dreyer.

Crampton, who notched 53 points on the year, led Air Force in total goals scored last season with 34, the most for an Air Force player since the 1998 season. Dreyer tallied a team-leading 26 assists and 36 total points in his sophomore campaign, while McKee added 33 points (29g, 4a) to complete the Falcons' starting attack. Other top scorers for the Falcons include midfielders Erik Smith, Christopher Allen and Kyle Cassady, who tallied 29, 23 and 20 points, respectively, in 2013.

While the Falcons must replace goalkeeper Austin Fox, lost to graduation, Air Force returns a solid core of defensemen in senior Matt Puleo, junior Davis Gunter, sophomore Alex Warden and junior long-stick midfielder Kyle O'Brien and senior goalkeeper Austin Fox.

Head Coach Eric Seremet...

Eric Seremet enters his sixth season at the helm of the Air Force lacrosse program. During the 2009 campaign, Seremet, a seven-year assistant for the Falcons, took over the reins from legendary coach Fred Acee, who retired following more than four decades in the coaching profession.

The 2013 season saw the Falcons face one of their toughest schedules in recent history, with five opponents finishing the regular season ranked in the top 10 nationally. Air Force was able to compile a 7-7 overall record on the year, including a 15-10 win over then-12th-ranked Lehigh, which was the Falcons' first victory over a top-15 team since 2007. Four of the Falcons' losses were decided by a single goal, including an overtime road loss to national semifinalist Denver.

Seremet, a 1992 North Carolina graduate, guided the Falcons to a 7-7 overall ledger in 2009, including a 4-1 record in the Great Western Lacrosse League and a second-place conference finish. Air Force's seven wins were the most since 2006 and more than in the previous two seasons combined, while the team finished at .500 for the first time since 1997. In 2010, Seremet helped lead the Falcons to an 8-7 overtime victory over service academy rival Army, marking the first-ever win for the Falcons over the rival Black Knights in Army's first trip to the Academy.

The 2011 team, which captured a victory over nationally ranked Loyola, ended the year with a 6-7 overall ledger and tied for third place in the league standings as the Falcons won five of their last seven contests. Meanwhile, in 2012, Seremet guided the Falcons to a 6-7 overall record, including a thrilling overtime victory against service academy rival Army.

Scouting the Pioneers...

Denver, ranked fourth in this week's USILA coaches poll and Warrior media poll, begins its season this weekend. The Pioneers posted a 14-5 overall record in 2013, advancing to the NCAA semifinals, where they fell, 9-8, to Syracuse.

Among the leading returners for Denver is junior Wesley Berg, who tallied 56 goals and 16 assists in 2013, while midfielder Erik Adamson added 27 goals and 13 assists last season. Carson Cannon leads the Pioneers' defense, while Denver also returns goalkeepers Jamie Faus and Ryan LaPlante, who split time between the pipes in 2013.

Season Openers...

The Falcons have a 29-18 all-time record in season openers. This year, Air Force is opening the season at home for just the second time in the past six seasons, and the first time since 2010.

Still streaking...

Senior Mike Crampton has scored at least one goal in 29 straight games, dating back to the 2011 season. His goal scoring streak ranks as the second-longest in the nation, behind Colgate's Ryan Walsh. Meanwhile, classmate Tommy McKee has the third-longest active goal scoring streak nationally, with 21 straight games with at least one goal scored.

Scoring with a long pole...

Entering the 2014 season, junior Kyle O'Brien ranks among the national leaders in career points by an LSM/defenseman. O'Brien currently has 12 career points (4g, 8a), which is tied for the third-most in Division I.

Top Attack unit...

Air Force's starting attack unit of seniors Mike Crampton and Tommy McKee and junior Keith Dreyer was named the eight-best attack unit in the nation by Inside Lacrosse. The trio was responsible for nearly half of the Falcons' goals scored last season with 73, while also contributing 49 of Air Force's 80 assists.

Preseason All-America...

Senior Mike Crampton was named to Inside Lacrosse's Face-Off Yearbook 2014 Division I Preseason All-America Team. Dreyer was tabbed an honorable mention selection on this year's team.

Crampton, an attackman from Kinnelon, N.J., is the Falcons' leading returning scorer with 111 career points, including 79 career goals, a total that ranks as the second-most by a Falcon in the modern era (since 1994). He has scored at least one goal in 29 consecutive games, which ranks as the second-longest active goal scoring streak in the nation. The Falcons' team MVP in 2013, Crampton scored a team-leading 53 points last season, the most by a Falcon since 1994. Additionally, his team-high 34 goals were the most by an Air Force player since 1998.

Preseason ECAC Rankings...

In the preseason ECAC rankings voted on by the league's coaches, Air Force was selected to finish third in the conference. Ohio State was predicted to finish first in the new-look ECAC, while Fairfield was picked to finish second. Rounding out the team projections were Air Force, Bellarmine and Michigan.

Erik's Going Pro...

Senior Erik Smith was selected in the fifth round of the 2014 MLL Collegiate Draft, chosen by the Boston Cannons with the 37th pick in the draft. With his selection, Smith became the first player in program history to be drafted into the professional ranks.

A midfielder from Golden, Colo., Smith has started every game in his career and enters his senior season with 78 career points (42g, 36a), along with 170 career ground balls. Smith's career ground ball total is the Falcons' third-highest since 1994, when Air Force began playing a full Division I schedule. He also ranks tied for eighth in that time span in career assists for the Falcons.

A two-time team captain, Smith was named the Falcons' offensive MVP in 2013 after finishing the year with 29 points, including a career-best 21 goals. He scored three man-up goals on the season, took nearly half of the Falcons' face-offs and earned the team's Ground Ball Award for the third-straight year, picking up 57 ground balls on the season.

Game Of Runs Ends In OT As No. 7 UVA Nips Men's Lax

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. ? Loyola University Maryland trailed seventh-ranked University of Virginia by eight goals at the start of the final quarter, but the Greyhounds reeled off nine straight to take a lead with 17.1 seconds to go on a Tyler Albrecht goal.

Virginia won the ensuing faceoff, and officials ruled that a Ryan Tucker shot cleared the goal line with one-tenth of a second left on the clock, and the game headed to overtime.

The Cavaliers (1-0) ended the game 1:44 into overtime on a James Pannell goal, giving Virginia a 14-13 victory in the season-opener for both teams.

In the game, Virginia had an 8-0 run during the second and third quarters, and the Greyhounds then used a 9-0 run to close the game and take a late lead.

Loyola (0-1) took a 2-0 lead on goals by Tyler Albrecht and Nikko Pontrello in the first 3:43, but the Cavaliers tallied three in a row to lead by one when Rob Emery scored on an extra-man opportunity with 7:52 to go in the first quarter.

Romar Dennis dodged from midfield and fired a goal that tied the score for Loyola at 3-3, but Pannell scored his second of the game, this time on man-up, and Virginia led, 4-3.

Brian Sherlock evened the score with a 59.1 seconds left in the first, executing a give-and-go for his first goal as a Greyhound.

Virginia broke the 4-4 deadlock with an extra-man goal by Pannell 1:06 into the second quarter, but neither the Greyhounds, nor Cavaliers scored again under less than five minutes were left before halftime.

The Cavaliers scored the final three goals of the half, the last coming on a Mark Cockerton shot with a defender draped on him, 1.7 seconds before the break. That score gave the Cavaliers an 8-4 advantage at halftime.

Cockerton scored another unassisted goal to keep the run going 2:06 into the third quarter, a frame that would end with the Greyhounds on the minus side of an 12-4 score.

Loyola did not take long in the fourth quarter to score, however, as Brian Schultz ripped a shot from the right side off a Justin Ward assist on an extra-man opportunity just 23 ticks into the stanza.

The Greyhounds got the ball back quickly, and Kyle Duffy scored 23 seconds later, and Matt Sawyer scored off a Pontrello assist at 13:11, pulling Loyola within five, 12-7.

Schultz followed with a nifty goal in transition off a Sherlock feed at 12:39, and Ward scored Loyola's fifth in less than four minutes, rolling off a Cavaliers defender on the left side, scoring into the top right corner at 11:26. His goal cut Virginia's lead to 12-9.

Pontrello then was on the receiving end of a Ward pass, and he scored at 8:42, and Sawyer had a highlight-reel goal with a slick move off a defender to make it 12-11 Virginia with 6:50 left in regulation.

Dennis then tallied his second goal as a collegian, ripping a high-to-high shot from 10 yards out, tying the score at 12-12 with 2:30 left in the fourth.

Loyola continued to hold possession, getting the ball back after Dennis' goal, and Loyola wound the clock down to under 20 seconds when Albrecht went low-to-low, pushing the Greyhounds in front, 13-12, with 17.1 seconds left.

Virginia won the faceoff, however, and Cockerton worked the ball on the low right side. He got the ball to Pannell who found Tucker at the top of the zone. Tucker released a hard shot that went into the net. After a long discussion, the officials determined it went in with one-tenth of a second on the clock, tying the game and forcing overtime.

The Cavaliers won the faceoff to start the extra frame, and after three shots went off cage, Pannell tallied the winner 1:44 into the period.

Pannell finished with four goals and an assist, leading all scorers.

Five Greyhounds ? Albrecht, Dennis, Pontrello, Sawyer and Schultz ? all scored two goals a piece. For each, other than Pontrello, it was the first multi-goal game of their career. Sherlock and Ward both had one goal and two assists in the game, while Pontrello and Sawyer had assists.

Loyola's comeback was spurred by solid play at the faceoff 'X' by Graham Savio. In his first collegiate game, Savio won 11-of-18 restarts.

Virginia did, however, pick up 35 ground balls to the Greyhounds' 32. Pontrello led the way with a career-high five, while Savio and Duffy each had four.

The Greyhounds, who were playing the earliest game in the history of the program, take more than a week off before facing No. 9 Penn State University on Saturday, February 15, in State College, Pa.

Dionne Leads No. 3 Duke Past Jacksonville, 16-10

February 8, 2014

DURHAM, N.C. ? Senior attackman Josh Dionne scored five goals to lead No. 3 Duke past visiting Jacksonville, 16-10, in the season opener for both squads on Saturday afternoon at Koskinen Stadium in Durham, N.C. Senior Jordan Wolf chipped in six points off of a pair of tallies and four assists.

"We thought Jacksonville was terrific," said head coach John Danowski. "They played with a lot of emotion, they were really well prepared and really well coached. Their new pieces suit them very well. Those kids have played us before. They were not intimidated and as always we're always going to get everybody's best shot. It was great for our guys to experience that right out of the gate."

The Blue Devils shook off an early 3-0 deficit to win its seventh season-opener in eight years under head coach John Danowski. Saturday's contest marked the return of Duke defenseman Casey Carroll, who last played collegiately on May 28, 2007 in the Blue Devils' 12-11 loss to Johns Hopkins in the NCAA title game. Carroll, who served in the U.S. Army from 2007-12, missed the 2013 campaign due to a knee injury.

"Defensively, we were prepared and we knew what they were going to do," Danowski said. "This was Casey Carroll's first game since 2007. He needs to see the speed of what's going on. This was Jamie Ikeda's first start, this is Brian Dailey's first time playing short stick d-middie. With all those things being said, the game changes."

The Dolphins jumped out to a 3-0 lead thanks to markers from David Goldman, Tom Moore and Dakota Rohlin. Duke responded with seven consecutive goals, including career-firsts from freshman Thomas Zenker and sophomore Chad Coach, and eventually took a 7-5 lead into intermission.

Duke scored the first four goals of the third quarter for an 11-5 advantage at the 3:41 mark of the period when Dionne tossed in the second of his five tallies.

For Dionne, the five goals matched his career-best outing set previously against Virginia on April 12, 2013. Cohan, in his first career start, added two goals and three assists, while junior midfielder Kyle Keenan registered a career-best two goals and four points.

At the faceoff X, Brendan Fowler won 18-of-28 draws and secured 16 ground balls. In the Duke net, Kyle Turri was credited with two saves to improve to 17-2 for his career.

Jacksonville's Pete DeLuca was terrific in the Dolphin net, posting 18 saves. Rohlin paced the Dolphins with three goals while Duncan Clancy carded two goals and three assists.

Duke will host No. 4 Denver next Saturday at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN3.

Falcons Fall to Fourth-Ranked Denver in Season Opener

USAFA, Colo. ? Outscored 12-2 in the second and third quarters, the Air Force lacrosse team opened the 2014 season with a 14-8 loss to fourth-ranked Denver Saturday afternoon at Falcon Stadium.

Senior Tommy McKee (Holt, Mich.) tallied a hat trick to lead the Falcons' offense, while junior Keith Dreyer (Malvern, Pa.) added a goal and two assists.

Denver was first to get on the board, finding the back of the net with a man-up goal at the 12:16 mark in the opening period. Neither team scored again until McKee tallied his first goal with just under three minutes remaining in the first quarter. Just 30 seconds later, McKee gave Air Force the lead with a man-up goal of his own, while freshman Austin Smith (Golden, Colo.) buried a feed from Dreyer at the 1:20 mark to put the Falcons up 3-1 going into the second quarter.

The Pioneers opened up the second period with a man-up score, but a goal from senior captain Erik Smith (Golden, Colo.) pushed the Falcons lead back to two goals. However, Denver went on to score six of the next seven goals to go into the locker room with an 8-5 advantage.

Air Force was shut out in the third quarter, while Denver tacked on five more goals to extend its lead to 13-8 heading into the final stanza. After one more score from the Pioneers, the Falcons added three more tallies in the final six and a half minutes, including a man-down goal from Dreyer in the last 60 seconds. However, it was too little, too late, as the Falcons fell to their former conference rival.

The Falcons held the advantage on face-offs, winning 16-of-25 for the game, while also outshooting Denver, 44-33. However, Air Force had just 19 shots on goal.

Denver was led by junior Wesley Berg with five goals, while sophomore Jack Bobzien added four goals and two assists.

Dennis Named Patriot League Rookie Of The Week After Debut

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. ? A two-goal performance in his first collegiate game earned Loyola University Maryland freshman midfielder Romar Dennis (Huntingtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken H.S.) Patriot League Rookie of the Week honors on Monday afternoon, the League office announced.

Dennis tallied goals in the first and fourth quarters of the Greyhounds' 14-13 overtime loss last Thursday night at seventh-ranked University of Virginia.

In the first quarter, Dennis dodged from the midfield 'X' and whipped an overhand shot past the Cavaliers' defender for his first collegiate goal less than 10 minutes into the game.

He was then part of Loyola's 9-0 fourth quarter run that saw them overcome a 12-4 deficit to take a 13-12 lead with 17.2 seconds left. Dennis again worked from the midfield, but this time he cut left-to-right midway through his dodge, and he finished a high-to-high shot for a goal with 2:30 left on the clock, tying the score at 12-12.

Dennis' two goals came on his only two shots of the game, and he was one of five Loyola players to score twice. Four of those players logged their first career multi-goal games in the contest at Virginia.

The Greyhounds are back in action on Saturday, February 15, with a 1 o'clock game at Penn State University in State College, Pa.

Loyola Greyhounds at Penn State Nittany Lions

Saturday, February 15, 2014 | 1:00 p.m.

University Park, Pa. | Holuba Hall

Quick Hits About The 'Hounds

Loyola University Maryland renews a rivalry that is the third most-played in program history when it takes on Penn State University at 1 p.m. in University Park, Pa., on Saturday, February 15.

The game has been moved inside to Holuba Hall.

In the Greyhounds' first game against No. 7 Virginia, five Greyhounds scored two goals, and five had three points. Of those players, three had their first multi-goal games, and two had their first multi-point outings.

Loyola opened its 2013 season on Thursday, February 6, at the University of Virginia. The teams were tied, 4-4, after the first quarter, but the seventh-ranked Cavaliers held Loyola scoreless for the next two frames, and Virginia went into the fourth quarter with a 12-4 advantage.

The Greyhounds scored nine-straight goals in the fourth quarter to take a 13-12 lead on a Tyler Albrecht goal with 17.2 seconds remaining in regulation.

Virginia won the ensuing faceoff, and Ryan Tucker converted on a 10-plus yard shot that officials ruled crossed the goal line with one-tenth of a second remaining, forcing overtime.

Virginia then earned the win on a James Pannell goal midway through the extra period.

Five Loyola players ? Tyler Albrecht, Romar Dennis, Nikko Pontrello, Matt Sawyer and Brian Schultz ? all scored two goals. Another five players ? Pontrello, Sawyer, Schultz, Brian Sherlock and Justin Ward ? had five goals.

Of the eight Loyola players (the aforementioned and Kyle Duffy) who scored goals in the game, six of them entered with four or fewer career goals.

Follow The Action

No livestream will be available of the game, but live stats will be available on LoyolaGreyhounds.com.

In The Polls

Loyola opened the 2014 season ranked 12th in the USILA Coaches Poll and 16th in the Warrior/Inside Lacrosse Media Rankings.

Penn State, which won its season opener against the University of Michigan, was slotted ninth in the coaches' poll and seventh in the media version.

Series History

Loyola and Penn State will meet for the 51st time, but 2009, when the teams take the field Saturday. The Nittany Lions, who are third only to Towson (54) and Johns Hopkins (51) in games played against the Greyhounds, lead the series, 26-23-1. Loyola won the last four meetings when the teams were ECAC Lacrosse League foes.

On The Tube

Loyola men's lacrosse will make a minimum of four appearances on national television this year as part of the Patriot League's agreement with CBS Sports Network.

Additionally, the Loyola-Georgetown game on Wednesday, March 19, in Washington, D.C., was added to the CBS Sports Network slate.

Fletch, White And Blue

Senior defender Joe Fletcher was the long current collegiate player selected as part of one of 52 players who made up the United States Men's National Team training roster this fall, and the day before Loyola's season-opener, he found out he is one of 30 players who made the cut for the team that will compete at the 2014 World Cup in Denver.

Fletcher trained with Team USA throughout the fall, playing in two training weekends, the Play For Parkinson's event in October and the Champion Challenge last month. He was one of seven defenders to make the 30-man roster.

Dennis Grabs Patriot League Honor

Romar Dennis was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week on Monday after scoring a pair of goals in his first collegiate game at Virginia. Dennis tallied one in the first quarter and one in the fourth that tied the game at 12-12.

Fresh Faces

Three Loyola players scored their first collegiate goals in the first quarter of the Greyhounds' game at Virginia. Brian Sherlock, Tyler Albrecht and Romar Dennis all tallied the first of their careers as Loyola worked to a 4-4 tie after 15 minutes.

Of the eight players who scored for Loyola, six of them entered the game with four or fewer career goals. Justin Ward and Nikko Pontrello were the only two with more than four.

In addition to Albrecht and Dennis, Jack Carrigan (defense), Ryan Fournier (rope unit) and Graham Savio (face-off) all made their Loyola and collegiate debuts.

Four players ? Albrecht, David Manning (defense), Brian Schultz (attack) and Sherlock ? all made their first career starts.

Ward is 22nd in school Division I history with 109 career points, two shy of tying Gavin Prout for 21st. He is seventh in career assists with 69, one away from creating a three-way tie for sixth with Kevin Beach and Tim O'Shea.

Over his four years as a Greyhound, Laconi has caused 42 turnovers and picked up 59 ground balls.

Against Virginia, Fletcher had the first slashing penalty of his collegiate career, a span of 49 games and 37 starts. It was just the fourth penalty of his All-American career. (Thanks @D1scourse for the research)

Up Next

Loyola will open its home schedule on Wednesday, February 19, when it hosts Towson University at 3 p.m. The game will air live on the Patriot League Network.

#2 Terps Use 14-0 Run to Top UMBC Friday

Cummings, Stukenberg combine for eight goals to lead Maryland to 14-3 win

CATONSVILLE, Md. ? After surrendering the first two goals of the game, the No. 2 Maryland women's lacrosse team turned up the heat with a crushing 14-0 run en route to a 14-3 win at UMBC on a snow-framed field Friday afternoon.

The Terps (1-0) captured the season-opening victory much in part to the success of several young players including freshman Zoe Stukenberg and sophomore Taylor Cummings. The tandem combined for eight of Maryland's 14 goals on the day.

After a rocky start, including two UMBC goals in the first five minutes of play, Maryland settled in with three free position goals ? two by Cummings, one by Kristen Lamon ? to take the lead with one minute to play in the first half. Brooke Griffin kept that momentum going into the half with a score off an assist by Cummings with one second remaining for a 4-2 Terrapin advantage at the break.

Maryland's second-half rally was fueled by its domination at the draw, winning the period's first nine draw controls. A mere 1:04 into the second stanza, Cummings once again found the back of the net and kicked off a 10-goal scoring spree in the period which included one additional goal by Cummings, four by Stukenberg, and one apiece from Griffin, Beth Glaros, Kelly McPartland and freshman Deb Milani.

A stingy Maryland defense wouldn't allow another Retriever score for nearly 50 minutes until UMBC landed on the scoreboard with a goal from Sam Nolan with about five minutes to play to shrink the Terps' lead to 11 where it would stay for the remainder of the contest.

"It was great to get out today and get the season started," head coach Cathy Reese said. "I thought once we were able to shake off some of the rust and settle into our offense, we were able to do some really good things, especially in the second half."

Cummings ended the game with a team-high five draw controls and three caused turnovers. After posting nine turnovers in the first half, the Terps' recorded only three in the final 30 minutes of play while forcing the Retrievers into 14 on the day. Maryland outshot UMBC 33-9. Megan Douty led the Terps defensively with three ground balls and two caused turnovers as goalies Abbey Clipp and Emily Kift split time in the cage with two saves each.

Maryland returns to competition Sunday at 1 p.m. for its home opener against Richmond.

Aaron Guides No. 3 Duke Past No. 4 Denver, 14-10

February 15, 2014

DURHAM, N.C. ? Duke sophomore goalkeeper Luke Aaron came off the bench to record nine saves over the final three periods as the third-ranked Blue Devils posted a 14-10 win over fourth-ranked Denver on Saturday afternoon in Durham, N.C.

"I think after the first few saves [I started getting comfortable], said Aaron. "The team really rallied behind me and I felt at ease. The defensemen let me see the shots and they supported me. It was a big team effort today."

The Blue Devils improve to 2-0 while the Pioneers fall to 1-1.

"Watching [Denver] on film offensively they just scared the heck out of us," said head coach John Danowski. "They're extremely talented, extremely patient and they play a style that's unlike anybody plays. So I was very proud of our guys and the way they hustled all day. It was a very good win for us over a very talented team."

Aaron took the reins in the Duke net to open the second period and allowed just three goals over the next 36-plus minutes as Duke pushed a 5-4 lead to a 14-7 advantage early in the fourth quarter. His previous career-best effort was a seven-save outing against Mercer on February 17, 2013.

"Luke had been playing terrific in practice and we just felt that it was time to see if we could create a spark," Danowski said. "I think when Luke made that first save I think that the guys got really excited and it helped the team."

Led by a career-high three tallies by Deemer Class, Duke received nine goals from its first and second midfield lines while faceoff specialist Brendan Fowler and longstick midfielder Luke Duprey added one marker apiece. After sitting out last week's season opener, sophomore attackman Case Matheis posted two goals and two assists.

"They locked the bases so the attackmen were always covered," said Class. "So we have to throw it back to the middie and the middie has to make a move or one more to the other middie. So it was guys being unselfish and moving it one more as the keys to our success."

The tilt between two top-five squads included a high-scoring opening period as Duke secured a 5-4 advantage after 15 minutes thanks to two goals and one assist from Matheis. After Denver tied the game less than two minutes into the second quarter on Jeremy Noble's goal, Duke outscored the Pioneers by a 3-1 margin to close the half for an 8-6 lead at intermission.

The Pioneers pulled within one goal at 8-7 early in the third period, but Duke used a 6-0 run over the next 17 minutes capped by Class's third score of the afternoon for a 14-7 advantage with 9:03 left in the fourth quarter. Denver ended its scoring drought of 19:41 at the 8:05 mark of the fourth quarter to and scored the game's final three goals to account for the final margin.

At the faceoff X, Fowler won 16-of-27 draws and was credited with nine ground balls. Duke won the overall ground ball battle 32-21, including 17-7 in the second half.

Denver was led by Zach Miller's four-goal performance while Wesley Berg found the back of the net three times. Between the pipes, Jamie Faus (6 saves; 8 goals allowed) and Ryan LaPlante (7 saves; 6 goals allowed) split the two halves.

Duke will host No. 18 Pennsylvania on Friday at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast by ESPN3.

Hempstead, NY ? Sam Llinares recorded two goals and three assists for the Pride but Tyler Melnyk and Kyle Whitlow each scored three goals and Ryan McNamara added two to lead the Golden Eagles of Marquette to an 11-9 victory over Hofstra at James M. Shuart Stadium Saturday afternoon.

Llinares, an All-CAA Preseason selection in 2014, tallied goals in the first quarter and the fourth quarter and added all three of his assists in the second half to equal his career-high point total. He posted five points against Sacred Heart in 2013. Senior Lance Yapor and junior Mike Malave each added two goals for the Pride, who dropped their season opener. Junior goalie Chris Selva, an All-CAA second team selection in 2013, made seven saves in the Hofstra cage.

Melnyk, a senior from Canada, scored all three of his goals consecutively during a four goal spurt by the Golden Eagles late in the first quarter through late in the third quarters that turned a 3-3 contest into a 7-3 advantage. Melnyk also added an assist in the game. Whitlow, a sophomore from Canada, posted three man-up goals. McNamara, a freshman, scored twice in the first quarter and added an assist in the fourth quarter. Senior JJ Sagl, a Long Island product, made eight saves for the Golden Eagles, who evened their record at 1-1.

In a see-saw first period, Marquette, led by former Hofstra Associate Head Coach Joe Amplo, jumped out to a 2-0 lead only to see Pride senior Drew Coholan and Llinares tie the game for Hofstra. After McNamara notched his second of the contest, Hofstra senior Torin Varn, the Pride's leading scorer last season with 30 goals, tied the contest at 3-3 with 2:25 to play in the first.

Melnyk scored the first of his three straight goals with 40 seconds to play in the first and sophomore Conor Gately wrapped up the Marquette run at the 5:45 mark of the third to build a 7-3 advantage. Yapor ended Hofstra's 29:46 scoring drought with an unassisted tally with 2:39 to play in the period and Malave added a man-up goal 61 seconds later to close to 7-5 after three quarters.

After Marquette's Bryan Badolato and Malave exchanged goals in the first four minutes of the fourth quarter, Whitlow's two man-up goals boosted the Golden Eagles lead to 10-6. Llinares and Jerry Nobile then exchanged goals before the Pride added goals by Yapor and sophomore Korey Hendrickson in the final 48 seconds to close out the scoring.

Hofstra outshot the Golden Eagles 37-30 but Marquette won the battle on the ground, picking up 36 ground balls to the Pride's 28.

The Pride return to action next Saturday, February 22 when they travel to New Jersey for an ESPNU game at eighth-ranked Princeton. Game time is 11 a.m.
