Rutgers Men's Lacrosse's Nardella Named Midseason All-American

Junior recognized on Inside Lacrosse's First Team

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (March 26, 2014) ? Rutgers men's lacrosse junior FO Joe Nardella (Cazenovia, N.Y.) has been named to the 2014 Inside Lacrosse Midseason All-America First Team, it was announced Wednesday. Prior to the season, Nardella was labeled an Inside Lacrosse Preseason Honorable Mention All-American.

According to Inside Lacrosse, over the last four years, 78.7 percent of players that were on its Midseason All-America First Team ended up as a First or Second Team USILA All-American at season's end.

So far this season, Nardella has been dominant at the face-off "X," winning 108-of-135 attempts (.800 percent). The junior leads the nation in face-off winning percentage and is nearly 10 percent better than the second-highest individual mark.

Nardella has won double-digit face-offs in every game he has played in 2014, including a dominant 18-of-18 performance vs. Richmond on March 17. It marks the fifth-best 1.000 percent face-off performance in NCAA Division I history and the best all-time in the BIG EAST.

WIDENER MEN'S LACROSSE FALLS, 14-4, TO No. 19 GETTYSBURG

[/B]

Chester, PA (Mar. 26, 2014)[/B] ? A repeat of last year's upset unfortunately was not to be for Widener, which fell behind early and was dealt a 14-4 loss by 19th-ranked Gettysburg at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium.

The Pride (3-4) last season notched their first victory against the then 13th-ranked Bullets with a 6-4 road triumph. But Gettysburg got its revenge, keyed by scoring the game's first seven goals.

The Bullets owned a 4-0 lead at quarter time due in large part to a 17-0 shots edge. Bijan Firouzan had two goals and an assist in that time.

Gettysburg (4-3) put up the first three in the second quarter and held a 9-1 lead at halftime. Robby Maddux scored twice in the quarter with Firouzan, Steven Mahon and Jameson Smith each getting one.

Widener fought hard in the second half, getting an 11-4 shots edge in the third quarter and 20-12 overall in the final 30 minutes. The squads played level, 2-2, in the third with Marc LaVine (Nashua, NH)[/B] and fellow sophomore Tim Taylor (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan)[/B] each scoring for the Pride.

Taylor scored twice, senior Casey Decker (Ridley, PA)[/B] tallied after going more than half the field following a ground ball and junior Trevor Alspach (Willingboro, NJ)[/B] won 7-of-13 face-offs for Widener. Senior All-America Mac Nestler (Chatham, NJ)[/B] totaled five saves.

Firouzan had six goals and an assist, Maddux amassed four goals and an assist, Derek Ruebling dished two assists and Jon Maddalone made three saves for the Bullets.

#2 Terps Edge #4 Boston College Saturday

Cummings records hat trick to lead Maryland to 10-9 victory

[/URL][/URL]

COLLEGE PARK, Md. ? The No. 2 Maryland women's lacrosse team picked up a pair of clutch performances from its freshman class Saturday as it edged No. 4 Boston College 10-9 Saturday at a rain-soaked Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.

Rookie goalie Emily Kift made three game-changing saves late in the second half and freshman Deb Milani turned the tides in the draw to keep the Terps (13-0, 4-0 ACC) undefeated in 2014. Sophomore Taylor Cummings posted three goals and added an assist to lead Maryland offensively. Beth Glaros, Erin Collins and Halle Majorana chipped in with two goals each.

Maryland kicked off the top-five showdown with a tone-setting 4-0 run, highlighted by scores from Glaros, Collins and a pair from Majorana. The Terps kept Boston College off the scoreboard for the first 13 minutes of the game until Sarah Mannelly gave the Eagles their first tally at 17:37.

Brooke Griffin gave the Terps a 5-1 lead with an unassisted goal at 10:40 before BC put together its best run of the period with a pair of scores with 8:06 and 6:17 remaining. Cummings capped the Terrapin scoring in the first stanza with a goal from Griffin with 3:35 to play for a 6-3 advantage at the break.

Mannelly posted the first goal of the second half with a free position score at 26:50 and jumpstarted a 5-0 Eagle run which was fueled by BC's dominance at the draw control.

Milani was key to the Terps regaining valuable possession, helping Maryland secure the draw as the Terps were able to get back on the board with a Cummings tally at 17:47 to shrink BC's lead to one. Glaros threaded the needle with an acrobatic, highlight-reel goal one minute later to knot the game at 8-8.

Cummings nailed a free position goal to give the Terps their first lead of the half at 15:30. Covie Stanwick answered for Boston College with an unassisted tally 21 seconds later.

BC utilized a lengthy stall tactic for nearly eight minutes and was ultimately denied a 10th goal by the rookie Kift who mustered three consecutive saves to keep BC off the board.

Collins recorded the game-winner off a great look from Kelly McPartland with 4:19 to play to give Maryland the win.

With the 10-9 victory Saturday, the Terrapins held its 13th straight opponent to 10 or fewer goals. Megan Douty led the defense with two caused turnovers and two ground balls.

"I think that game was very fun for people to watch today," head coach Cathy Reese said. "I give Boston College a lot of credit. Acacia (Walker) has done a great job with that team and they came in and fought until the very end and so did we, which was great. We saw a lot of good things from our team despite some challenges we faced throughout the game. It feels really good to pull away with the win against a good team."

Maryland travels to No. 1 North Carolina for a rematch of last season's national championship game next Saturday at noon.

Newark, Del. ? Nick Trizano scored three times and Will Gabrielsen made 12 saves as Drexel (6-4, 1-1 CAA) defeated Delaware (5-4, 0-3), 9-7, in a Colonial Athletic Association game.

Drexel scored four straight goals to end the first half and take the lead for good at 5-2. Four different Dragons scored during the stretch. Ben McIntosh started the run at the 12:35 mark and less than a minute later, after the Dragons won the draw, Jules Raucci gave Drexel a 3-2 lead. Ryan Belka gave the Dragons a two-goal cushion with an unassisted score at the 6:12 mark. Six minutes later, with just seven second to go in the half, Trizano came from behind the net to get the final goal of the quarter. On the ensuing face-off, Nick Saputo won the draw and Delaware's John O'Connor was whistled for an unreleasable penalty. The Dragons got the ball on the man-up to start the third and promptly scored twice in the first minute of the half. Trizano picked up a rebound and went behind his back for the first goal. Saputo then won the draw clean. The Dragons' Belka then fed McIntosh, who fired home his second of the game to give Drexel a 7-2 advantage.

Delaware tried to chip away after the two Drexel man-up goals, and managed to score three straight to trim the lead down to 7-5. Dan Keane started the run with a man-up goal after Trizano was called for a push. Less than two minutes later, Beau Jones scored the second of his three goals. The teams went the next 12 minutes without scoring before Jones got the hat trick with an unassisted goal with 11:38 left in the game. The Dragons stopped the momentum with 8:35 left when Trizano again came from behind the net, stopped and fired a shot past Peaks to complete his hat trick. The teams then swapped goals with Jackson Finigan scoring for the Hens and Jared Boudreau getting on the board for Drexel as the visitors held a three-goal lead with a little more than two minutes to go. Delaware added another with 1:07 left, but Drexel was able to run out the clock and defeat their long-time rivals for the third-straight year.

Drexel wasted little time getting on the board to start the game. Less than two minutes in, Ryan Belka bounced a shot past Delaware's Conor Peaks to give the Dragons a 1-0 advantage. That would be Drexel's only goal of the quarter, despite firing 15 shots. The Hens didn't get on the board until the final minute. Delaware killed off a penalty, then got possession and evened it up on a Jones' goal with just 40 seconds to play in the first.

The Hens got their first lead of the game just 32 seconds into the second quarter. Trip Ashley set up Tom Holland and just like that, the Hens had two goals in 72 seconds after being held scoreless the first 14:20 of the game.

With his second goal of the game Trizano became just the 30th Drexel player to reach the 100-point mark. The senior now has 70 career goals. McIntosh had two scores and has scored at least two goals in nine straight games. He is now tied for 16th all-time at the school with 79 career goals. Belka finished with two goals and two assists for Drexel. Gabrielsen made 12 stops in the cage for Drexel, including five in the second quarter. He made at least three saves from point-blank range.

Drexel outshot Delaware, 47-33, including a 29-12 advantage in the first half. The game featured the top two face-off men in the Colonial Athletic Association. Drexel's Saputo came in as the conference leader at .678, while Tyler Barbarich of Delaware had a .640 percentage entering play. Saputo had the advantage on Saturday, winning 11 of the 19 face-offs in the game. He also had a game-high eight ground balls.

The Dragons return to Philadelphia for a two-game home stand. Drexel hosts CAA-foe Penn State on Saturday at 2 p.m. and one week later plays its final home game of the year against UMass.

MEN'S LACROSSE: #18 Penn 6, #11 Yale 5

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The University of Pennsylvania men's lacrosse team put
forth an outstanding defensive effort on Saturday afternoon at Yale's
Reese Stadium, and pulled out a 6-5 victory over the 11th-ranked Bulldogs.

With the win, the 18th-ranked Quakers improved to 4-3 overall, 1-2 in Ivy
League play. Yale fell to 4-3, 1-2 in the Ivies.

Penn was down, 4-2, after Yale's Brandon Mangan scored with 6:41 left in
the third quarter. However, the Quakers held the Bulldogs scoreless for
more than 20 minutes after that, and scored four times to gain control of
the game.

Both teams were on the board less than three minutes into the game, as
Eric Scott put Yale up and Drew Belinsky answered. It took nearly eight
minutes for anyone to score, before the Bulldogs' Michael Keasey finished
a feed from JW McGovern. Last in the first quarter, Zack Losco scored
unassisted to make it 2-2

The second quarter nearly went scoreless, before Conrad Oberbeck finished
a feed from Brandon Mangan with just 11 seconds left before halftime.
Midway through the third quarter, Mangan finished a feed from Keasey and
that made the score 4-2.

Penn clamped down on defense after that. That allowed the offense to get
the Quakers back in the game.

Kevin Brown made the score 4-3 with 3:31 left in the third, finishing a
feed from Chris Hupfeldt by the right post. Just 26 seconds later, the
Quakers drew level when Isaac Bock scored unassisted. That closed out the
scoring for the period, and the teams went into the final quarter tied,
4-4.

Bock gave Penn its first lead of the day with 9:24 left in regulation,
just as a Yale penalty was ending. In a fast-break situation, a pass came
across the front of the goal to Joe McCallion, who quickly fed Bock near
the left post. Bock's shot beat Yale goalie Eric Natale past his left side
to put the Quakers up, 5-4.

Penn doubled its lead amid a scramble and a few change of possessions near
midfield. The Quakers eventually came up with the ball and got it to
Losco, who fed the ball across the box to Doktor who beat a defender
before shooting it past Natale's left leg.

Yale got one of the goals back with 1:16 left when Oberbeck was able to
get around the right post and fire a shot over Brian Feeney's right
shoulder. Yale had another chance with the ball and the opportunity to tie
the game in the final few seconds, but Oberbeck went back to the well and
Feeney was equal to the chance. It was the punctuation on a strong day for
Feeney, who had 13 saves. At the other end, Natale made 11 stops in the
Bulldogs cage.

Penn is home for Ivy League games each of the next two Saturdays, starting
next week when the Quakers host Brown on Franklin Field at 1 p.m. It will
be Alumni Day for the lax programs, with the men's alumni game taking
place at 10:30 a.m. on Adams Field (Penn Park).

NEW HAVEN, Conn. ? Conrad Oberbeck, Brandon Mangan and Michael Keasey each had two points, but it wasn't enough to get the Yale men's lacrosse team its second Ivy League victory this season. The Bulldogs fell to Penn 6-5 on a rainy day at Reese Stadium.

Yale started the scoring off with two goals in the first quarter. Eric Scott found the net unassisted ripping a shot low on the goalie from 20 feet out with 13:17 left. Yale's second goal came when J.W. McGovern ran behind the net to find a wide-open Michael Keasey a few feet in front of the restraining line. Keasey winded back his shot and roped a goal past Penn's Brian Feeney at 4:24.

Oberbeck scored the only goal in the second quarter to give the Bulldogs a 3-2 lead going to the half. Oberbeck started the play by passing the ball to Shane Thornton. Thornton continued the rotation passing to Sean Shakespeare and eventually to Brandon Mangan. Mangan looked ready to shoot, but dished it back to Oberbeck. Oberbeck was coming from the right side, received the pass from Mangan, turned and ripped a shot to the top right corner of Penn's net.

The first goal of the second half came with 6:41 remaining in the third as Mangan put Yale up by two with his 12th goal of the season. Mangan received Michael Keasey's pass from behind the net, ran in front, and found the top left corner right above Feeney's stick. Shortly after, Penn scored two goals to tie the game at 4-4 going into the fourth.

From there Penn scored goals with 9:24 and 3:35 remaining to increase the Quaker lead by two. Down 6-4, the Bulldogs upped their offensive attack.

Oberbeck scored his 17th of the season with 1:16 left by getting around the right post and netting a shot just above the goalie's right shoulder cutting Penn's lead to one. The Quakers, coming out of a timeout with possession of the ball, had 28 seconds on the clock to kill to take the road victory. All they had to do was make a few passes.

Jack Meyer, who replaced Eric Natale in net, pounced on the initial pass and fired the ball down field looking for Oberbeck. After a fight for the ground ball, J.W. McGovern was able to gain possession. McGovern was pushed out of bounds but the officials ruled it Yale ball. Yale then called its final timeout with 13.7 seconds left to give the Elis one last chance to tie it up.

After the timeout, Oberbeck started with the ball, took it from behind the net and raced out on the left side. He turned back, jumped, and fired a shot low that was saved by the Penn goalie. After gaining possession Penn kept the ball behind the net until time expired.

Yale is next in action with it travels to Providence this Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Ward, Pontrello Spark Offense As No. 1 Loyola Tops No. 17 Colgate

HAMILTON, N.Y. ? Justin Ward and Nikko Pontrello combined for five goals and nine total points, and top-ranked Loyola University Maryland defeated No. 17 Colgate University, 10-8, in Patriot League action on Saturday afternoon at Andy Kerr Stadium.

Ward scored two both of his goals in back-to-back fashion midway through the third quarter, and he had an assist on a 12-yard Matt Sawyer shot with 4:05 remaining that gave the Greyhounds (9-1, 5-0) a two-goal cushion.

Pontrello finished with three goals and an assist, scoring two of his in a span of two minutes, 42 seconds between the third and fourth quarters.

Loyola's defense yielded 11 shots to the Raiders (7-3, 4-1) in the fourth quarter, but most came from 12 or more yards away. Goalkeeper Jack Runkel posted 12 saves in the victory, and the Greyhounds held Colgate's leading scorer, Ryan Walsh, without a point for the first time in his career, a span of 42 prior games.

Pat Laconi had four ground balls and three caused turnovers, the last of each coming with less than 25 seconds to play, enabling the Greyhounds to run out the clock. Joe Fletcher had a team-best seven ground balls, and he had primary man-to-man marking responsibilities for Walsh.

The teams traded goals one-for-one in the first half with the Greyhounds never trailing, but Colgate tied the game at 4-4 heading into halftime as Kevin Boyle finished a transition opportunity for the Raiders following a Loyola turnover. He took a Brandon McCann pass and scored from just in front of the crease with 4.4 seconds left, tying the game for the fourth time.

Cameron Williams scored his second goal of the game to give Colgate its first lead 2:46 into the second half, running down the right alley for a shot.

Jeff Chase answered for Loyola, as he scored from 10 yards out after cutting left to right, knotting the game at 5-5 with 9:29 to play in the third quarter.

Chase's goal sparked a 4-0 Loyola run that put the Greyhounds in front, 8-5. Sawyer wheeled around the crease and found Ward in front of him for a goal 43 seconds after Chase's to put Loyola in front 6-5.

Ward then gave the Greyhounds their first multi-goal lead of the game at 6:02 following a Raiders turnover. Pontrello picked up a ground ball during a Colgate failed clear and fed it ahead to Ward who scored from close in on the left side.

Pontrello then pushed the advantage to 8-5 when he caught a Ward pass at goal-line extended left, dodged toward the crease and scored his second of the day at 2:31 in the third.

Colgate, however, got a pair of goals late in the third to make it a one-goal game once again.

Matt Clarkson scored one at 1:08, and then after a Greyhounds turnover, Tyler Rigo got his hands free on the right side for a goal with 16.4 seconds left in the third quarter, pulling the Raiders within one, 8-7.

Loyola quickly pushed its advantage back to two, however, in the fourth quarter. Graham Savio won the period's opening faceoff to himself, ran into the box and got a shot past Colgate goalkeeper Brandon Burke, but it hit hard off the crossbar and rebounded in front of the crease.

Ryan Fournier collected the ground ball and fed Pontrello on the left side of the crease where he shot-faked and scored his third of the day 11 seconds into the final quarter of regulation.

Clarkson, however, scored quickly for Colgate, tallying his season-high third of the day 1:16 after Pontrello's third.

The teams played to the one-goal game for nearly 10 minutes before Ward rolled from behind the cage and found Sawyer open 12 yards out up top, and Sawyer ripped a sidearm shot to put Loyola in front two, 10-8.

Colgate had the next possession after winning the faceoff, but it had no shots from inside 12 yards against the Greyhounds defense. The Raiders' first three attempts went wide, and Runkel made a save on the fourth to gain possession again for Loyola.

At the end of the clear, Loyola drew a slashing call against Colgate, but the Greyhounds turned the ball over on the extra-man opportunity, giving the Raiders possession with 90 ticks left on the clock.

McCann sent a Raiders shot wide after a Colgate timeout, and Loyola called for a break in the action with 41 seconds remaining.

Eric Foote had the ball at the top of the box where Laconi stripped him with a check and picked up the ground ball. He cleared it to Ward and despite beind doubles in the corner, he found Brian Sherlock who ran out the clock with the ball in his stick.

In addition to Ward's two goals and three assists and Pontrello's three and one, Sawyer had a goal and an assist, while Chase, Sherlock, Brian Schultz and Kevin Ryan added goals.

Clarkson led Colgate with three goals, while Williams and Rigo had two apiece and McCann assisted on three first-half goals. Burke made 12 saves in goal.

Loyola continues its Patriot League road swing on Saturday, April 5, with a 12 noon game in Annapolis, Md., against the U.S. Naval Academy.

Jack Kelly's 16 Saves Lifts Brown Over #15 Princeton, 11-10

Providence, R.I. - Sophomore goalie Jack Kelly (West Islip, NY) made 16 saves and sophomore Kylor Bellistri (Potomac, MD) provided the offense with three goals to lead Brown to an 11-10 Ivy League win over #15 Princeton, beating the Tigers for the first time since 2008.

The Bears improve to 6-3 overall and 1-1 in the Ivy League, while Princeton falls to 4-4, 1-2 in Ivy play.

The difference in the game was the outstanding play in goal by Kelly, who made 16 saves overall, including seven in the final quarter as Princeton tried to get back in the game from a five goal deficit. Princeton goalie Matt O'Connor finished with nine saves.

Bellistri's three goals came on three shots, while sophomore Brendan Caputo (Westbury, NY), freshman Dylan Molloy (Setauket, NY) and senior Sam Hurster (St. Louis, MO) netted two goals each for the Bears.

The high scoring Tigers were led by Tom Schreiber's three goals, while Jake Froccaro and Mike McDonald added two goals each.

Brown dominated the game through the first three quarters, building a 9-5 lead. Senior face-off specialist Tommy Capone (Watertown, NY) captured 12-of-16 face-offs in the first 45 minutes.

Brown increased its lead to five goals, 10-5, when Molloy scored his second goal of the game 46 seconds into the fourth quarter.

The Tigers came storming back with three straight goals, pulling to within 10-8 on a goal by Ryan Ambler with 5:24 left on the clock.

Bears' junior middy Tyler Landis (Coppell, TX) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal on an unassisted score with 4:38 remaining. Princeton cut the lead to one goal, 11-10 with 3:28 left on goals by McDonald and Schreiber, his third of the game.

Brown's defense stepped up in the waning moments, keeping the Tigers from getting off a good shot as time expired.

The Bears earned a 26-22 advantage in ground balls behind Capone' seven ground balls. The shots were all even at 39 each.

The Bears travel to Philadelphia for an Ivy League battle against Penn next Saturday, April 5. Face-off is 1pm at Franklin Field.

Falcons Defeat Michigan, 15-12, in ECAC Contest

USAFA, Colo. ? Senior captains Mike Crampton (Kinnelon, N.J.) and Kyle Cassady (Upper Arlington, Ohio) combined for 13 points to lead the Air Force lacrosse team to a 15-12 victory over ECAC foe Michigan on Saturday afternoon.

For the second-straight week, Crampton tallied four goals and three assists to pace the Falcons' offense. With his performance, Crampton moved into a tie for 10th place on the Falcons' all-time goal scoring list, now with 101 career goals. He becomes the first Air Force player since 1994 to reach 100 goals for his career. Meanwhile, Cassady also had a standout game for the Falcons, scoring a career-high six points (3g, 3a) with his second hat trick of the season.

Air Force got out to a quick start, scoring just six seconds into the contest as senior captain Erik Smith (Golden, Colo.) won the opening face-off to feed Crampton for the first goal of the game. The Falcons tacked on two more goals in the next two minutes before Michigan got on the scoreboard at the 12:11 mark, while Crampton tallied his third score (the 100th of his career) less than four minutes into the game.

The Falcons added two more goals?one from freshman Austin Smith (Golden, Colo.) and one from junior Keith Dreyer (Malvern, Pa.)?to take a 6-1 advantage with 6:38 remaining in the first quarter, while the Wolverines notched a score in the final minute of the period.

Michigan picked up momentum early in the second quarter, tallying three straight scores to cut the margin to one goal. However, Air Force notched three goals?including a pair from senior Tommy McKee (Holt, Mich.) in the final five minutes of the half?to take a 9-5 lead into the intermission.

Cassady scored the first two goals of the second half to give Air Force its largest advantage of the game, but the Wolverines responded with two scores of their own, including a man-up goal midway through the period, to bring the deficit down to 11-7. However, goals from Dreyer and Crampton gave the Falcons a 13-7 edge heading into the final stanza.

The Wolverines were still not done fighting, scoring two goals in the first minute and a half of the fourth quarter. Erik Smith added his second goal of the game with just under 13 minutes to play to push Air Force's margin back to five. After a seven-minute scoreless drought for both teams, Michigan tallied a man-up score with 5:27 remaining and added another goal a minute later. The Wolverines got as close as two goals down the stretch, finding the back of the net with 28 seconds on the clock, but Air Force closed out the game with the first goal of the season by sophomore Danny Brown (Mooresville, N.C.) with just seven seconds remaining.

Michigan outshot Air Force for the game, 50-37, with the biggest difference coming in the fourth quarter, taking 20 shots compared to just eight for the Falcons. The Wolverines also had the edge on face-offs, with specialist Brad Lott winning 17-of-30 draws for Michigan. Meanwhile, Air Force's goalkeepers?sophomores Brett Dadiego (Baldwin, N.Y.) and Doug Gouchoe (Concord, Mass.)?combined for 13 saves.

McKee finished with three goals and an assist to help Crampton and Cassady on the offensive end, while Dreyer (2g, 1a) and Erik Smith (1g, 2a) added three points each. Leading Michigan's offense was Kyle Jackson, who registered three goals and an assist, while David McCormack added three goals.

"We got off to a good start," said Air Force head coach Eric Seremet. "We were very efficient in our shooting early on. We made a few mistakes down the stretch, but fortunately we created that early cushion and we grinded it out. We're a grind-it-out team?we're not a team that anything is going to come easy for. We're going to have to work and our guys stepped up when they needed to."

"We gave our two game balls to Mike Crampton and Kyle Cassady," continued Seremet. "Kyle had a great game?he really stepped up today. He's always steady for us, but today he took it to another level."

With the win, the Falcons move to 6-3 on the season and 2-0 in the ECAC, while the Wolverines fall to 4-7 overall and 1-1 in the league. Air Force also extends its win streak to four games and clinches a berth in the ECAC Lacrosse League tournament, which will be held in Columbus, Ohio, May 1 and 3.

Air Force is back in action next Saturday, April 5, for a non-conference contest against Mercer. The game is slated to begin at 12:00 p.m. in Falcon Stadium.

Fowler & Walsh Guide Duke Past Harvard, 17-11

March 29, 2014

DURHAM, N.C. ? Brendan Fowler won 21 faceoffs and Christian Walsh scored five goals to lead No. 3 Duke to the 500th victory in program history with a 17-11 decision over visiting Harvard in men's lacrosse action on Saturday at a rain-soaked Koskinen Stadium.

"Christian spends a lot of time working extra," said head coach John Danowski. "He comes to practice really early and stays late ? the classic coaching cliche. Matt Danowski has spent a lot of time working with him before and after practice so we're not surprised to see him have the success he had today."

Winners of five straight games, the Blue Devils improve to 9-2 on the year while Harvard falls to 5-4. Duke stretches its home win streak to 10 games dating back to March 2, 2013.

"I'm really proud of the guys on a couple of levels," Danowski said. "Number one we're playing a terrific opponent. I thought bumping up the game an hour is not easy. You'd like to play in nice weather, you'd like to play with more people in the stands so it's not easy on a lot of different levels. So I'm very happy with the team and the maturity level just seemed to take over a little bit today."

Duke's Will Haus opened the day's scoring just eight seconds into the contest. Harvard responded with consecutive goals by Sean McDonagh and Will Walker, but the Blue Devils then used an 8-1 spurt ? during which Walsh, Myles Jones and Jordan Wolf scored two markers apiece ? as Duke took control of the game with a six-goal advantage.

Thanks to Walsh's tally with just eight seconds remaining in the second period, the Blue Devils held a 10-4 lead at intermission. Each team scored seven goals over the final 30 minutes of play.

"I think I was just lucky to be the guy this week," said Walsh. "I did more of the feeding last week and it happened to be that I was on the receiving end this week and I hit the cage. We've been working hard to score and I kind of feel like I've been snake-bitten a bit and finally today they went in."

Jones finished the day with four goals while Deemer Class added one goal and three assists. Fowler dominated at the faceoff X by winning 21-of-31 draws and securing 14 ground balls. Luke Duprey chipped in seven ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers.

In the Duke net, Luke Aaron was credited with 10 saves.

For Harvard, Walked posted four tallies while Devin Dwyer had one goal and three assists. Crimson goalkeeper Jake Gambitsky recorded eight saves.

Duke travels to meet Notre Dame next Saturday, April . Faceoff is set for 12 p.m. and the game will be televised live by ESPNU.

Bears Travel To
Ithaca, NY To Battle #12 Cornell

Providence, R.I. ? Brown looks to keep its Ivy Playoff hopes
alive against 12th-ranked Cornell on Saturday, April 19 at
Schoellkopf Field in Ithaca, NY. Coming
off a tough 7-6 overtime loss to Yale, the Bears need a win to stay in the mix
for the top four teams in the Ivy League standings and a berth in the league
playoffs.

The Bears: Brown (6-5, 1-3 Ivy) fell
behind #13 Yale early last week, trailing 6-2 at the half, but stormed back to send
the game into overtime, 6-6, shutting-out the Bulldogs in the second half. Sophomore
Kylor Bellistri's goal with 1:15
left in regulation sent the game into overtime. Yale captured the overtime
face-off and scored early in the extra period.

The Big Red: Cornell (9-3, 3-1 Ivy) has
fallen from second to 12th in the national rankings after losing its
last three games to Harvard, Syracuse and Hofstra (10-9 ot). The Big Red opened the season with nine
straight wins over Hobart, Binghamton, Michigan, Canisius, Virginia, Yale,
Colgate, Penn and Dartmouth.

The Brown-Cornell Series Record: Brown and Cornell have met
53 times, dating back to 1964, with the Big Red holding a 35-18 series
advantage over the Bears. Cornell earned
a 13-7 win over the Bears last year in Providence. Brown has won the last two
regular season games played in Ithaca, NY, including a 10-9 victory in 2012.

Hurster ? Bears'
Top Goal Scorer:

Senior captain Sam Hurster (St.
Louis, MO) leads the Brown team and ranks eighth in the Ivy League with 21
goals, while also adding five assists. He netted two goals in a win over
Princeton and last week vs. Penn. Hurster exploded for a career high six goals
for the second time this season, scoring six goals vs. Marist, while taking
just six shots. He netted 22 goals for
the Bears a year ago.

at Marist and followed that up with two goals and an assist in Brown's win over
Princeton. Molloy scored three goals, including the game-winning goal in
the second overtime period, in Brown's 11-10 win over Providence. Molloy was
also named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week after scoring four goals in
Brown's win over Hartford, and netting three goals and picking up seven ground

Schultz Scores Career-High Six As Men's Lacrosse Beats Bucknell, 13-5

BALTIMORE ? Brian Schultz scored a career-high six
goals on just 10 shots, helping No. 1-ranked Loyola University Maryland
defeat Bucknell University, 13-6, in the teams' final Patriot League
regular-season game of the year.

Schultz, who had a previous best of four goals
earlier this season against Lafayette College, recorded a hat trick in
the game's first 25-plus minutes, helping Loyola take a 5-1 halftime
lead.

He tallied another in the third, the final goal of a 7-0 Greyhounds run, and two in the fourth quarter.

The Loyola run, its 22nd of the season
of 3-0 or better, started when slick passing led to a Matt Sawyer goal
on the doorstep with 4:47 left in the first quarter. Brian Sherlock sent
a high-to-low pass from the top to Schultz
on the right side. Schultz didn't let the ball settle in his stick and
immediate fed Sawyer on the crease for a goal that put Loyola up, 2-1.

Loyola's defense played as big of a role in the run
as its offense, as Bucknell missed on 20-straight shots and was shutout
for a period of 37 minutes, 17 seconds.

Jack Runkel made 14 saves in goal for the
Greyhounds (12-1 overall, 8-0 Patriot League), and Loyola forced 18
Bucknell (7-7, 4-4) turnovers. The Greyhounds caused 13 of the
turnovers, led by a career-high five by Pat Laconi. Schultz and
Jason Crane each had two for Loyola. Joe Fletcher led all players in
the game with seven ground balls.

Fletcher also held the player he was defending,
Bucknell's David Dickson, without a point, snapping a streak of 41 games
with at least one. It is the third time in four weeks that Fletcher has
held an opponent without a point after he entered
the game with a streak of 15 or more games (Colgate's Ryan Walsh, 42;
Navy's T.J. Hanzsche, 15).

Schultz put Loyola on the board after more than
seven minutes of scoreless lacrosse to start the game. Justin Ward, who
had a goal and three assists, used a skip pass to find Schultz on the
low right side, and Schultz finished with a nine-yard
rip for a goal at 7:27.

Ryan Joseph, however, tied the game for Bucknell
with a goal off Tom Black's assist at 65 seconds later, but Sawyer's
goal at 4:47 would put Loyola in front for good.

Nikko Pontrello fed Schultz from behind as Schultz
was cutting to the middle of the field, and Schultz scored his second
with 9:45 left in the first, and after a transition run, Kyle Duffy shot
a cross-box pass from high-to-low to Pontrello
who quickly shot low to score at 8:06.

Schultz completed his hat trick off another Ward assist at 4:54, sending Loyola into the locker room ahead by four.

Pontrello and Ward scored unassisted at 13:11 and
5:57 in the third quarter, and Tyler Albrecht fed Schultz for a goal
from the right side at 5:22 to push Loyola's lead to 8-1.

Peter Burke scored 55 seconds into the fourth
quarter, snapping Bucknell's scoreless drought, but Loyola responded
with two quick goals.

Ward saw Sherlock make a diagonal cut, threw him a
pass, and Sherlock used a right-handed sidearm shot to score at 13:07.
Schultz was then the recipient of a Kevin Ryan pass for his fifth of the
night with 11:00 left in regulation.

Two-straight goals by the Bison's Sean Doyle, both
unassisted tallies, pulled Bucknell within six with 7:56 left, but
Schultz fired in his sixth at 7:28, rolling from behind and beating his
defender to the crease.

Thomas Filbotte added a Bucknell goal at 3:34, but
Laconi scored off Fletcher's first career assist, and Pontrello used
another dodge from behind to tally the game's final goal.

Graham Savio had another efficient day at the
faceoff 'X' for Loyola, winning 13-of-20 and picking up five ground
balls. Loyola also used a 39-31 advantage in ground balls to control the
possession game.

In addition to Fletcher's game-high seven, Kyle Duffy had four ground balls, and Runkel, Crane and Fournier each had three.

The Greyhounds will have more than a week off to
prepare for their next game, a Patriot League Championships semifinal on
Friday, April 25. Loyola will host the Patriot League semifinals and
championship game at Ridley Athletic Complex.

The Greyhounds will play Bucknell, Colgate
University or the U.S. Naval Academy in a 4:30 p.m. semifinal that will
be aired live on CBS Sports Network.

Hempstead,
NY - The 12th-ranked Hofstra Men's Lacrosse team (9-3, 3-0) will be
looking to secure the number one seed in the CAA Championship Tournament
in two weeks when they travel north on Saturday, April 19 to face the
Minutemen of the University of Massachusetts
(7-4. 1-2). Game time at Richard Garber Field on the UMass campus is 7
p.m.

Saturday's
game can be heard on WGCH-AM (1490) with Rich DeKorte and Anthony
Santaniello describing the action beginning with the pregame show at
6:30 p.m. The game can also
be heard worldwide on the internet in the PRIDEZONE at GoHofstra.com.

While three of the four spots in the CAA Championship are already
secured by Hofstra, Drexel and Towson, the seeding spots are not. A
Hofstra win at UMass would nail down the top seed for the Pride in the
conference tournament that begins on Wednesday, April
30.

Hofstra, which has won five consecutive games, is coming off a
thrilling, 10-9 come-from-behind overtime victory over then-sixth-ranked
Cornell at Shuart Stadium last Saturday. After trailing 7-4 entering
the fourth quarter, Cornell scored five unanswered
goals in the first 4:56 of the period to take a 9-7 lead. But Pride
senior Drew Coholan, who had two goals and one assist in the game,
scored with 3:22 to play in regulation to cut the deficit to one before
sophomore Sam Llinares, who had three assists in
the game, scored with 1:06 to play to tie the game. In the overtime,
the Pride won the face-off but the Big Red took it away. A key check
from behind by senior Lance Yapor got the ball right back for Hofstra.
After a timeout, junior Mike Malave, who had three
goals in the contest, beat Cornell goalie Christian Knight for the
game-winner. Senior Torin Varn also tallied three goals for Hofstra
while sophomore Korey Hendrickson added a goal and two assists. Junior
Chris Selva made 11 saves in the Pride cage for the
victory,

Hofstra
continues to be led in scoring this season by Llinares, who has 16
goals and 21 assists in 11 contests. He has already topped his 32-point
output of a season ago and
is Hofstra's first 40-point scorer since Jay Card tallied 46 in 2011.
Varn has added 24 goals and three assists while Coholan has a
career-high 19 goals and seven assists. Hendrickson has 14 goals and
seven assists while Yapor has 13 goals and five assists.
Selva now has an 8.55 goals against average with 107 saves and a .510
save percentage this season for the Pride.

The Minutemen of
UMass enter their Senior Night game on Saturday with a 7-4 overall
record and a 1-2 mark in the CAA. UMass, which has dropped their last
two games and three of the last four, has wins
over Army (6-5), Ohio State (12-11 in OT), Harvard (8-4), Brown (15-2),
Providence (16-11), Penn State (8-6) and Hartford (12-6). Their losses
have come against Albany (25-10), Fairfield (11-5), Towson (6-5) and
Drexel (13-9).

The
Minutemen rank 39th in the country in scoring offense (9.64 gpg) and
23rd in scoring defense (9.09 gpga). UMass returns 26 lettermen,
including six starters, from last
year's 7-8 team.

UMass
is led in scoring by freshman Nick Mariano with 25 goals and seven
assists for 32 points. Senior Connor Mooney has 16 goals and 16 assists
while junior Grant Whiteway
had posted 17 goals and six assists. Sophomore goalie Zach Oliveri has
recorded a 9.09 goals against average with 113 saves and a .538 save
percentage.

Saturday's game is the 39th meeting between Hofstra and Massachusetts in
a series that started in 1974. UMass leads the hotly-contested series,
21-17. Twelve games in the series have been decided by just one goal,
five have been decided by two goals and four
decided by three goals. Last year at Hofstra, senior
Colin Fleming scored his second goal of the game with 5.9 seconds
remaining to lead the Minutemen of Massachusetts to a 9-8
come-from-behind win over the Pride.

No. 5 Maryland Uses Late Surge To Get By
No. 8 Notre Dame, 12-8

Fighting Irish
and Terrapins to meet again Friday in ACC semifinals.

[/URL][/URL][/URL][/URL]

NOTRE DAME, Ind. ? Fifth-ranked
Maryland scored the final four goals of the contest to take a 12-8 decision
over No. 8 Notre Dame in Atlantic Coast Conference men's lacrosse action on
Saturday afternoon at Arlotta Stadium.

Sophomore
attackman Matt Kavanagh tallied two
goals and four assists for the Fighting Irish, while fellow attackman Conor Doyle also netted two goals. Mike Chanenchuk and Connor Cannizzaro both had three goals
and one assist for the Terrapins.

Today was
the ACC regular-season finale for both squads. The Fighting Irish will face the
Terrapins again on Friday in the semifinals of the ACC Championship at PPL Park
in Chester, Pa. Faceoff is schedule for 7:30 p.m. (ET). Notre Dame is the tournament's
No. 4 seed, while Maryland is the top seed. Duke (No. 2 seed) and Syracuse (No.
3 seed) will square off at 5 p.m. in the other semifinal. Both semifinals will
be aired on ESPNU and WatchESPN as will the title game on Sunday, April 27 (1
p.m.).

Notre
Dame (6-5, 2-3) trailed 6-3 at halftime and Maryland pushed the lead to four early
in the second half on a Henry West
goal. Kavanagh trimmed the deficit back to three before Matt Rambo put the Terrapins up 8-4 at the seven-minute mark of the
third quarter.

The
Fighting Irish offense then erupted with four consecutive scores in a span of
5:19 to even the game up, 8-8, with 11:36 left in the contest. Kavanagh started
the uprising with 1:55 left in the third period and a Tyler Brenneman tally made it 8-6 by the end of the stanza. Jack Near sliced the Terrapin lead to
one just over a minute into the final period and Doyle evened the affair for
the first time all afternoon.

Maryland
(10-2, 4-1) responded to Notre Dame's 4-0 run with one of its own to close out
the game. A Joe LoCascio goal at the
8:51 mark of the period gave the Terrapins the lead back for good and then
three straight deposits, including one with the timer on, from Cannizzaro put
the contest away.

"We came
back and it was 8-8 with six or seven minutes to go in the game and we didn't
have the ball again," Notre Dame head coach Kevin Corrigan said. "Literally, I
don't think we had a single six-on-six possession after that point. You can't
play the whole game at one end of the field. They kicked our butts in faceoffs
all day long. That and us failing to clear a couple times hurt because you
can't win if you don't have the ball."

Charlie Raffa took every faceoff
attempt for Maryland and he went 20-of-24. The Terrapins outshot the Fighting
Irish 40-21. Junior goalie Conor Kelly
made his first start since the North Carolina game (March 1) and made a
career-high 14 saves for the Fighting Irish, while Niko Amato had nine stops for the Terrapins.

The
Terrapins grabbed a quick 2-0 lead behind goals from West and Chanenchuk before
Doyle put the Irish on the board with just under 11 minutes left in the opening
quarter. A man-up deposit from Chanenchuk gave Maryland a 3-1 lead after one
quarter.

Maryland
extended the cushion to three on a Rambo goal, but a man-up tally from John Scioscia made it 4-2 with 8:45
remaining in the first half. The Terrapins converted on a man-up opportunity of
their own as LoCascio scored and then it was Notre Dame's turn to score with a
man advantage when Sergio Perkovic
found the back of the net to make it 5-3 with just over a minute left in the
first half. Maryland was 2-of-3 in man-up chances, while Notre Dame was 2-of-5.
A Chanenchuk goal with six seconds left on the clock gave Maryland a three-goal
edge at halftime.

"We have
to make some adjustments in our faceoff and we can't dig ourselves a hole in
the first half," Corrigan said. "I'm proud of the way our guys came back
because we were down and weren't getting the ball. It's not like we had a ton
of chances but we didn't quit and we didn't lose our cool and we got ourselves
back in the game with a chance to win. We just didn't execute at the end of the
game."

Amherst,
MA ? Junior Mike Malave recorded a career-high five goals and sophomore
Sam Llinares tallied two goals and three assists as the 12th-ranked Hofstra Pride clinched the number one seed in the Colonial Athletic Association Championship Tournament
later this month with an 11-6 victory over the Minutemen of Massachusetts at Richard Garber Field Saturday night.

The Pride, which won their sixth consecutive game, improve to 10-3 on
the season and 4-0 in the CAA heading into their regular season finale
at Penn State next Saturday. UMass, which dropped its third consecutive
game, is 7-5 on the season and 1-3 in the CAA.
UMass will play Delaware next Friday for the fourth and final seed in
the CAA Championship Tournament that begins on Wednesday, April 30.

Malave, who has scored 13 goals in his last four contests, scored twice
in both the first and second quarters and once in the third for his
career-best outing. Llinares tallied his fourth five-point game of the
year. Senior Torin Varn tallied two goals and
one assist while classmate Drew Coholan added two assists for the
Pride. Junior goalie Chris Selva recorded eight saves, including five in
the second half, for his 10th win of the season.

UMass was led by freshman Nick Mariano with a goal and an assist while
senior Connor Mooney added two assists. Six different players scored
goals for the Minutemen. Sophomore goalie Zach Oliveri tied his
season-high with 15 saves.

The first half was an offensive explosion as the two teams combined for
12 goals in the first 30 minutes. Hofstra jumped out to a 3-0 lead after
6:52 as Malave opened the scoring before Varn added consecutive goals
for the 3-0 advantage. Llinares assisted on
all three goals. But the Minutemen responded with goals by Gianni
Bianchin and Rob Lynott to close the deficit to one. But Malave and
Minuteman Jeff George exchanged goals in the final 1:37 to close the
first quarter with the Pride ahead, 4-3.

UMass tied the game just 3:30 into the second quarter as Grant Whiteway notched his 18th of the year from Mariano. But Malave scored his third of the night and 20th
of the season less than a minute later to give Hofstra a 5-4 advantage,
a lead the Pride would not relinquish. That goal started a 4-1 Hofstra
run as Llinares would score for the Pride before Mariano tallied a
man-up goal for UMass. Malave would notch his fourth of the game with
3:16 to play in the half and his fifth to open the
second half scoring 10:19 into the third quarter.

After allowing five goals in the first half, the Pride allowed only one
in the second 30 minutes and that came with just 23 seconds to play in
the third which cut the Hofstra lead to 8-6. But the Pride scored three
times in the fourth as sophomore Korey Hendrickson
scored his 15th of the year, Llinares got his 18th of the season and senior Lance Yapor tallied his 14th with UMass on a full-field ride with eight seconds to play.

Hofstra outshot UMass, 38-25 and won the ground ball battle, 30-21.
Pride freshman Kris Clarke won 15 of 21 face-offs on the evening.

The Pride travel to Penn State next Saturday, April 26 for a noon CAA contest.

Concord's Megan Melusky playing for Goucher in womens lacrosse

MADISON,
N.J. ? Drew pushed Goucher on the brink of elimination from postseason
play this afternoon, with Landmark Conference scoring leaders Krysta
Cento and Nikki Klelman
combining for 14 points to help send the shorthanded Gophers to a 20-11
defeat.

Goucher
(7-8, 2-3 Landmark) will now need a win over Susquehanna next Saturday,
as well as a Scranton loss at last place Merchant Marine, to clinch the
fourth and final spot
in the Landmark Conference playoffs. The Rangers (10-4, 4-1 Landmark)
sealed their own playoff berth with the win.

Forced
to compete a player down this afternoon, the Gophers nevertheless got
off to a strong start, as Rita Meissner and Stefi Perry each tallied
unassisted goals in the opening
three minutes to give Goucher a two-goal lead.

Drew
responded with the game's next four goals before Erin Reifsnyder broke
the streak with a free position conversion. The Rangers followed with
four more goals in a row
to open up an 8-3 advantage, and they would take an 11-5 lead into
halftime.

That
advantage was pushed up to 13-6 early in the second half. Three
unanswered strikes from Reifsnyder, Anneke Ossorio and Megan Meluskey
got Goucher within four with 23
minutes still remaining, but Drew put the game out of reach with a
seven-goal outburst over the following 10 minutes.

The
Rangers finished the game with a 35-20 edge in shots. Kleiman, who
leads the conference with 52 goals, led the way with six markers in this
contest. Cento, meanwhile,
added five goals and three assists to push her conference-leading point
total up to 88.

Reifsnyder
led the Gophers with four goals, and she also had the team's lone
assist. The senior co-captain is currently third in the conference with
57 points on the season.

Perry,
Meluskey and Ossorio each finished with two goals apiece. Meluskey tied
a career-high with four draw controls, while Claire Lippay led the team
with a season-best six
ground balls.

Drew
has now won seven straight meetings between the teams since Goucher
began Landmark play with a pair of victories in the series back in 2008.

Prior
to today's contest, the Gophers wore memorial t-shirts in honor of
men's lacrosse player Matt Gabriel (picture attached). Reifsnyder and
Hannah Mae Brown were also recognized
by the Rangers as they celebrated their Senior Day.

The
Gophers regular season finale against Susquehanna, the defending
conference champions, will take place at 12 p.m. on Saturday during
Goucher's Blue & Gold Weekend.

Saturday afternoon. Brown falls to 6-6 overall, 1-4 in the Ivy League, while
Cornell improves to 10-3, 4-1 in Ivy play.

another to open the second quarter to pull ahead, 4-1.

Molloy's second goal with 10:16 left in the second quarter
cut Cornell's lead to 4-2. That was as close as the Bears would get as the Big
Red broke the game open with a goal to close out the half and three more to

Molloy scored once again for the Bears to cut the Big Green advantage to
8-3, with 5:38 remaining in the third quarter.

while six other Brown players netted goals ? senior Sam Hurster (St. Louis, MO)
and sophomores Kylor Bellistri (Potomac, MD), Bailey Tills (Denver, CO), Will

Syracuse Scores Twice in Final Seconds to Defeat Duke
Orange win ACC tournament debut, 16-15

CHESTER, Pa. ? In a rematch of the 2013 NCAA Championship, third-seeded Syracuse scored twice in the final 15 seconds to defeat No. 2-seed Duke, 16-15, in the first semifinal of the 2014 ACC Men's Lacrosse Championship on Friday night at PPL Park.

Trailing 14-10 with 13:38 remaining in the game, the Orange scored six of the last seven goals to advance to Sunday's 1 p.m. championship against the winner of top-seeded Maryland and Notre Dame.

Dylan Donahue, who scored the game winner with less than a second left, led the way for Syracuse with four goals on four shots. Kevin Rice tied the tournament single-game record with eight points for the Orange, including setting up Donahue on the final goal.

"It's a great feeling; they're a really good team," said Donahue. "It was a hard-fought effort from both teams and we're just happy to come away with the win."

After battling back and forth during the first quarter and into the second, Duke's defense held Syracuse scoreless for 11:14 as the Blue Devils went on a 6-0 run to take a 12-8 lead early in the second half.

The Orange pulled to within two, 12-10, before Kyle Keenan and Josh Dionne scored 25 seconds apart to start the fourth quarter and push the lead to 14-10.

Rice's third goal on the night with 9:06 left started the late run for Syracuse, which saw five different players find the back of the net.

With time running out, Syracuse's Kevin Staats went with a behind-the-head pass to set up Billy Ward for the equalizer with 15 seconds remaining. After a faceoff win by Chris Daddio, Donahue scored the winning goal with less than a second on the clock to send the Orange to the title game.

"We were playing pretty good offense all day, so we just talked in the huddle about our offense. Just stay patient ? there's 10 minutes left in the game," said Rice. "Chris [Daddio] started heating up in the faceoff X again and Bobby [Wardwell] made a few huge saves down the stretch and we were able to capitalize."

Duke was a perfect 3-for-3 on extra-man opportunities while Syracuse was 0-for-4.

Three Blue Devils ? Josh Dionne, Case Matheis, and Deemer Class ? notched hat tricks for the Duke. Jordan Wolf's five points on one goal and four assists moved him into fourth on the all-time ACC scoring list with 273 career points.

Syracuse, which lost to Duke 21-7 on March 23, ended a four-game losing streak to the Blue Devils with the win and is now 11-3 in one-goal games over the last two years, including a 4-0 mark this season.

"They won the individual battles," said Duke coach John Danowski. "They got inside a lot, and when they got inside, they made plays. We knew as coaches that it wasn't going to be 21-7 again. Those Syracuse players have so much pride and it was tough to convince our guys because they only know that one game. We've been doing this a long time and we've seen this before."

Duke's Brendan Fowler, who started the game 2-for-8 with three violations on faceoffs in the first quarter, won 19-of-24 the rest of the game.

Syracuse goalkeeper Bobby Wardwell picked up the win with eight saves while allowing five goals in the final 30 minutes of action. Wardwell came in at halftime in relief of starter Dominic Lamolinara.

SYRACUSE QUOTES

Head Coach John Desko
Opening statement:
"We're very excited about the win today. I thought Duke came out, and they're a terrific team. They once again took advantage of all our mistakes that we made. We had some opportunities early, we made some mistakes and they took advantage of every single one of them. I thought their goalie played terrific today. Fortunately we got some faceoffs at the end. These guys made a great play to get the winner for us. It's our first time in the ACC [Championship], so it was an exciting game for us and we're very happy with the win."

On junior goalkeeper Bobby Wardwell:
"Bobby's been playing very strong in the last four or five games now. We're very confident in him going out there. … He made some big saves out there in the fourth quarter. The game could have gotten out of reach. Even the ones that did get in, we made some defensive errors, left guys open on the crease for their last couple of goals. He took everything and more ? he made a couple saves he probably shouldn't have made today. He played great."

On the team's improvement:
"I think we've come a long way. If you look at our stats, besides today, the special teams have been doing well, man up and man down, faceoffs have been better. The man up/man down has been better besides today. The bad defense was some of our mental errors, but I think we fought through that. The opportunities were there when we needed them."

Redshirt Sophomore Attack Dylan Donahue
On the game-winner:
"We've been playing together for a while, and when [Chris] Daddio got that faceoff, it was a huge win. He gave it to Randy [Staats] and I was looking to cut, I think Kevin [Rice] was looking to cut too. He passed it to Kevin, which was probably an easier pass and I just backdoored the shot."

On beating Duke:
"It's a great feeling. They're a really good team. It was a hard-fought effort from both teams and we're just happy to come away with the win."

Junior Goalkeeper Bobby Wardwell
On coming back to get the win:
"We kind of figured out what they were doing. They were making a lot of goal line picks so we started working through that. The offense started playing awesome in the second half. Daddio was winning faceoffs and the less they have the ball, the less they can score."

Junior Attack Kevin Rice
On coming back from down four in the fourth quarter:
"We were playing pretty good offense all day, so we just talked in the huddle about our offense. Just stay patient ? there's 10 minutes left in the game. Duke's not a team to hold the ball, so we knew we could get enough opportunities to work our way back in. Chris [Daddio] started heating up in the faceoff X again and Bobby [Wardwell] made a few huge saves down the stretch and we were able to capitalize."

On beating Duke:
"We've talked a lot as a team since that game against Duke when we lost by 14. We're a different team, and we talked about it pregame. This was our true first chance to show that we are a different team. We go down 6-2 in the first quarter and we were playing better, we were outshooting them. I think it showed that we weren't that same team that got beat down earlier this season. We fought back and we're just really proud of everyone."

DUKE QUOTES

Head Coach John Danowski
Opening statement:
"I certainly want to congratulate Syracuse University, Coach Desko, his staff and the players. They were terrific, played for 60 minutes and never gave up. We thought they played with a lot of skill and were very poised in crunch time. We applaud how well they played."

On the difference between the teams:
"You look statistically, we took more shots, we out-ground balled them by 15. We won 10 more faceoffs, 3-for-3 on extra man, 0-for-4 for them on man down. But I just thought their players, it's kind of strange, they played better than our players. They won the individual battles. When there were opportunities to make plays around the goal ? I don't think Syracuse scored too many goals outside 5 yards. They got inside a lot, and when they got inside, they made plays. … We knew as coaches that it wasn't going to be 21-7 again. Those Syracuse players have so much pride and it was tough to convince our guys because they only know that one game. We've been doing this a long time and we've seen this before."

On senior midfielder Brendan Fowler:
"You have to win every faceoff ? he won 6 out of 9 in the fourth quarter. He won 4 out of 4 in the third, 9 out of 11 in the second. That's pretty good. Brendan has a way of figuring it out. He won 19 out of 24 for three quarters. If a kid gives you that kind of effort, you can certainly work with it. Credit to Syracuse's young man for hanging in there and fighting."

Senior attack Josh Dionne
On scoring to give Duke a 14-10 lead in the fourth quarter:
"I was just thinking that was the next one and I was ready to get another one. Each player that scored today doesn't really think much of when they score; they're just trying to do the best for their team."

On Syracuse switching goalies at the half:
"They did it to us in the first game. Coach Danowski and the staff made it well aware to the played every day of the week. We knew it was coming and we thought we knew what to do."

On what changed for the team in the second half:
"Obviously I was to reiterate what Coach said ? congratulations to Syracuse on playing so well. But I think the biggest thing that slowed us down was ourselves. Me myself, I know I didn't run down a ground ball there in the fourth quarter. That's a possession that we lost. It was little things ? I wasn't catching the ball the greatest at times. The little things like that, we weren't putting it on people's sticks enough."

Notre Dame Wins ACC Title
Fighting Irish down Syracuse, 15-14

CHESTER, Pa. ? Notre Dame went on a 6-0 run in the third quarter and held on to defeat Syracuse, 15-14, to win the 2014 ACC Men's Lacrosse Championship Sunday afternoon at PPL Park.

"I couldn't be more proud of them," said Notre Dame coach Kevin Corrigan. "We didn't play tentatively like a team that's afraid and not sure what's going to happen to them. We played like a team that's going to go out and win games.

"The one thing was, no matter what happened ? good play, bad play ? we turned it right around, focused on the next play and played really hard and really fearlessly."

Matt Kavanagh, the Tournament's Most Valuable Player, led the Irish with four goals and two assists, including back-to-back goals in the pivotal third quarter.

Jim Marlatt tallied three goals and one assist for Notre Dame, while Conor Doyle had a career-high five points.

Irish goalkeeper Conor Kelly finished with seven saves, including stopping Syracuse's Kevin Rice with four seconds remaining to clinch the league title.

After the Irish jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first quarter, Syracuse went on a 5-0 run to take a 6-3 lead. Notre Dame scored four of the last five goals of the first half to send the game to the break tied at 7-7.

Syracuse converted on an extra-man opportunity to start the second half. Notre Dame then scored six goals and held the Orange scoreless for over 13 minutes to take a 13-8 lead.

Trailing 15-10 with under ten minutes remaining in the game, Syracuse scored four straight down the stretch to pull within one. The Orange had the ball with the chance to send the game to overtime but were unable to get the ball past Notre Dame's Kelly.

Syracuse's Chris Daddio won 21-of-33 faceoffs, including eight of the first nine in the game. Nick Ossello went 10-of-25 and tied a career high with three points.

Rice, who had six assists and seven points for the Orange in the championship, set new tournament records with 15 points and 11 assists on the weekend. Randy Staats tied a career high with five goals against Notre Dame.

Both teams converted on two extra-man opportunities. Notre Dame was a perfect 2-for-2 with the advantage, while Syracuse went 2-for-3.

NOTRE DAME QUOTES

Head Coach Kevin Corrigan
Opening statement:
"I feel a little bit like I did the other night. It was a different pace of game more than anything else but it was just a slugfest. If you watched Syracuse this weekend, they're like the Terminator ? you just can't kill them. You think they're dead, you've shot them, and there they are right on your tail again. I'd give them a lot of credit, but certainly I thought our guys played the whole weekend with a lot of moxie. They made tough players, were unafraid and we scored a lot of goals in different ways this weekend. That's something we've prided ourselves on all year and it definitely paid off this weekend."

On the team's performance over the weekend:
"I couldn't be more proud of them. I thought our guys played with so much courage and fearlessness this weekend. We didn't play tentatively like a team that's afraid and not sure what's going to happen to them. We played like a team that's going to go out and win games. Sometimes we were really good and sometimes we weren't. I would've liked to have about four of those layups in the second half back. Just like the other night, we'd like to have some of those clears back. The one thing was, no matter what happened ? good play, bad play ? we turned it right around, focused on the next play and played really hard and really fearlessly."

On the team's goal outburst in the third quarter:
"I said this the other night after playing Maryland in back-to-back games. When you're in your seventh quarter in the last three weeks against a team, you should have some success. You really should start ? not to figure them out, but to get comfortable with the decisions you have to make. Of course you still have to make them about their players and they're very good about seeing what you're doing. I really felt they did three different things over the course of the day, adjusting to what we were taking away. That's a good, smart, well coached team."

Junior Goalkeeper Conor Kelly
On the last 30 seconds of the game:
"It was kind of deja vu of Friday night. We were tied on Friday, but up one, we knew they were going to get a shot off and I was just trying to be ready for it. They can score in a lot of different ways. I just tried to stay ready for everything."

On playing near his hometown:
"Me and Liam [O'Connor] went to Haverford, so it's not quite Chester but it's still Philadelphia. It's always nice to come home and win in front of the home crowd. It definitely made it special for Liam and I.

Sophomore Attack Matt Kavanagh
On his four-goal performance:
"I think in the first game, I wasn't really recognizing the second slide coming from behind. I was really aware today of moving it, not really holding on to it, and picking my spots when it was a good time. We had a really good two-man game with the short sticks. Their goalie got kind of confused on some, so I just tried to attack and get some good situations."

On the team's offense:
"We knew we could score that many different goals. We can score in so many ways: on the man up, transition from the [defensemen] coming up, six-on-six, faceoffs. We scored in so many different ways today, so it's hard to stop every part of the game."

SYRACUSE QUOTES

Head Coach John Desko
Opening statement
"Hats off to Notre Dame. They played hard and we won some faceoffs but they got after us. We took the early lead but they kept fighting. In the beginning of the third quarter they went on a run and started to pull away from us, so I had to take a timeout to slow the bleeding and I think we finally settled down, and then we started our comeback. I thought their goalie made a great save at the end, and I thought he played well all day. I was impressed by the way they played today, and they really wanted it. Congratulations to Kevin Corrigan and the staff."

On the goalie change
"They got some good shots on Bobby today, and I don't think he got into a rhythm the way he wanted to today. It was just a change up; they were scoring goals and putting up good shots today but we've made the change the other way around plenty of times, so it was just a little change up."

On the Notre Dame defense in the third quarter
"They won a lot of faceoffs and number 20 [Nick Ossello] was very quick today and played well, so we eventually had to change what we were doing so we had to put a pole on one side. They played hard and went after it. They played hard and took the game."

Sophomore Defender Brandon Mullins
On the game
"We can't keep giving up 15 goals a game. We can't keep expecting our offense to keep bailing us out. I thought Notre Dame did a good job using picks and utilizing matchups to get players open but I think our defense really needs to do better though."

Junior Goalkeeper Bobby Wardwell
On getting the start
"It was like any other game -- I was just trying to get mentally prepared. They have a really good team and their shooters had a really great day today."

On his game
"It wasn't my best day today, obviously I just couldn't get into a rhythm like I did Friday night but thank god Dom came in and he bailed us out a lot in the fourth quarter. He made three huge saves and I thought he played very well today."

Junior Attacker Kevin Rice
On the last play
"They rotated on our initial dodge and a shorty came out to me and I knew there was about ten seconds left so I took it to the rack and he made a really good save, but I have to finish that shot in that situation."

Falcons Slated to Host Richmond in NCAA Play-In Game

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. ? The Air Force lacrosse team will host Atlantic Sun champion Richmond in the play-in round of the 2014 NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship on Wednesday, May 7. The game is slated to begin at 7:00 p.m. in Falcon Stadium.

The Falcons, who have reached 10 wins for the first time since 1989, will make their first NCAA tournament appearance since 1988. Air Force, which currently holds a 10-5 overall record on the season, earned an automatic bid to the national tournament by capturing the ECAC tournament title. The Falcons, who entered the ECAC Championship as the third-seed, defeated second-seeded host Ohio State, 14-7, in the semifinals, while earning a 9-8 victory over top-seeded and 14th-ranked Fairfield.

Meanwhile, Richmond earned its automatic bid by capturing the Atlantic Sun tournament championship. After earning a 14-6 win over Mercer in the semifinals, the Spiders defeated High Point, 8-7, in the title game. Richmond has compiled a 6-10 overall record in its inaugural season of varsity competition.

The winner of Wednesday night's play-in game between Air Force and Richmond will advance to the NCAA First Round, facing the defending national champion, top-seeded Duke. That contest will be played on Sunday, May 11, at 5:15 p.m. (ET) in Durham, N.C.

Jones Guides Duke Past Air Force, 20-9

May 11, 2014

DURHAM, N.C. ? Sophomore midfielder Myles Jones tallied three goals and five assists to lead top-seeded Duke to a 20-9 win over visiting Air Force in opening round action of the 2014 NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Tournament on Sunday evening at Koskinen Stadium.
The Blue Devils improve to 14-3 on the year and advance to meet Johns Hopkins next Sunday in the quarterfinal round in Newark, Del. Game time will be either noon or 2:30 p.m.

The Falcons conclude the season with an 11-6 overall ledger.

“We want to congratulate the Air Force Academy on a fabulous season,” said Duke head coach John Danowski. “Their young men played four games in nine days and two trips. We have tremendous respect and admiration for how hard they played and for their season.”
Jones led Duke’s group of eight multi-goal scorers which included Jordan Wolf’s 31st career hat trick. Case Matheis contributed three markers while Jack Bruckner, Deemer Class, Josh Dionne, Will Haus and Kyle Keenan had two goals apiece.

“All week we worked on dodging with our head up and got away from selfish play and start filling the net up as a team,” said Jones. “You can’t get 20 goals by yourself or with one or two guys. Getting everyone involved was awesome. I love how Case [Matheis] came out after a long week of practice and put on display what he worked on all week.”

After the two squads traded goals to open the game, Duke netted three straight tallies for a 4-1 advantage 10 minutes into the contest. Air Force’s Tommy McKee later scored at the 13:36 mark of the second period to close the margin to 5-3, but the Blue Devils responded with seven unanswered goals ? including two by Keenan ? to take a 12-3 lead into intermission.

“Myles [Jones} is 240 pounds and there are not too many 240-pound midfielders in the country and so that’s a bit of anomaly,” Danowski said. “He’s such a terrific athlete, has great stick skills and vision. You can see his basketball skills at play when he plays with his head up and he just continues to get better each week.”

The Blue Devils, who held a 52-35 shot advantage on the day en route to posting their 17th consecutive win at home, led by as many as 12 goals at 18-6 early in the final period.

After totaling 13 points on nine goals and four assists through Duke’s first nine games of the season, Jones has compiled an impressive 37 points on 21 goals and 16 helpers over the last eight outings. Included in the run of success which started on March 23 against Syracuse are four games with six-plus points against the Orange (5-1=6), Virginia (4-2=6), Rutgers (1-5=6) and Air Force (3-5=8). The eight total points on Sunday against the Falcons marked a career single-game best for Jones.

With his three goals and one assist against Air Force, Wolf moved into a tie for second place on the ACC’s all-time scoring chart with 285 points (174 goals & 111 assists), matching the total of former Duke standout Zack Greer (206-79=285). Former Duke standout and current Blue Devil assistant coach Matt Danowski sits atop the list with 353 career points on 170 goals and 183 assists.

“Today you saw a whole bunch of examples of the right play where we made the extra pass,” Danowski said. “You could hear guys calling ‘one more’, which means one more pass. There were a couple times where I think we moved the ball three, four times and finished the ball because guys were playing right, playing together and playing right.”

At the faceoff X, Duke’s Brendan Fowler secured 17-of-28 draws and registered a game-high 13 ground balls to move into a tie for fifth place on the NCAA’s all-time chart for ground balls with a career total of 436.

In the Duke net, Luke Aaron (6 goals allowed; 8 saves; 45:00) and Kyle Turri (3 goals allowed; 1 save; 15:00) shared the duties. For the Falcons, netminders Brett Dadiego (9 goals allowed; 6 saves; 22:21) and Doug Gouchoe (11 goals allowed; 6 saves; 37:39) split the action.

Kyle Cassady and Mike Crampton paced the Falcon offense with three goals each.

With the victory, Duke improved to 29-15 all-time in NCAA Tournament play including a 14-4 slate in first round games. Under eighth-year head coach John Danowski, the Blue Devils are now 26-5 in the month of May.

MEN'S LACROSSE FINAL: Drexel 16, #4 Penn 11 (NCAA 1st round)

PHILADELPHIA - For a majority of the first half on Sunday, the University
of Pennsylvania and Drexel University men's lacrosse teams gave everyone
exactly what was expected from this NCAA first-round game at Franklin
Field -- high energy, some jangly nerves, and an ebb and flow on the
scoreboard.

So when the Quakers' senior long-stick middie, Alex Blonsky, scored off a
Joe McCallion feed with the Quakers DOWN a man and just 1:16 left in the
half, you had to feel good as a Penn fan about where things stood. The Red
and Blue was up, 6-4, and hadn't allowed Drexel a lead to that point.

Jules Raucci scored for the Dragons with 17 seconds left, making the score
6-5. What could happen in 17 seconds, right?

Nick Saputo could happen.

Drexel's standout faceoff man beat Danny Feeney clean, rolled down the
chute and fired a shot that beat Danny's twin brother, Penn goalie Brian
Feeney. That took about five seconds. The next faceoff netted the exact
same result -- a clean Saputo win, a Saputo charge down the chute, a
Saputo shot, a Saputo goal.

Eleven seconds. Three goals. 7-6 Drexel lead.

That momentum carried over to the second half. Drexel scored the first
three goals in the third quarter in a span of 1:04, and tacked on another
two minutes later. Midway through the third it was 11-6, Dragons, and
somehow you felt like this was a deficit that even the Comeback Quakers of
2014 could not overcome.

They could not. Final score: 16-11, Drexel.

So Penn's magical season ends at 11-4 overall, and while the Quakers will
have fond memories of an Ivy League Tournament title, an eight-game win
streak, and a lofty No. 4 seed in this year's tournament, there is little
doubt that this result will sting for awhile.

Drexel (13-4) and Penn split the eight faceoffs in the opening quarter,
and it was 6-6 until that late rally before halftime. The tone was set --
Drexel won an astounding 12 of the 16 faceoffs in the second half.

Penn head coach Mike Murphy tried everything. He replaced Feeney in goal
with John Lopes, then brought Feeney back in the fourth quarter. The spark
never came.

Penn opened the game with the first two goals, as Pat Berkery and Zack
Losco scored unassisted, and then after Hank Brown got Drexel on the board
Kevin Brown finished a feed from Nick Doktor to make the score 3-1. Ryan
Belka's goal for the Dragons was answered by Doktor with just nine seconds
left - but in an ominous portent to the second-quarter collapse, a faceoff
violation was called on Penn and Saputo raced down to score with just 1.9
seconds left before the horn to make it 4-3.

(Did we mention that Saputo matched his goal total for the entire season
in this one game? He started it with three, and had three more by
halftime.)

Chris Hilburn and Nick Trizano matched goals midway through the second
quarter, before a nearly five-minute drought was finally ended by
Blonsky's man-down goal.

Doktor had Penn's only goal in the third quarter, but any chance the
Quakers might get back into this thing was squashed early in the fourth
when Drexel netted three in a row to make it 14-7 with 11 minutes left.
Penn got three of them back with goals from Drew Belinsky, Isaac Bock and
Joe McCallion -- the last two with less than three minutes to play -- but
it was far too late. Doktor added a goal in the final minute to give him a
hat trick and a four-point game.

Penn outshot Drexel, 47-45, but Will Gabrielsen had 12 saves to get the
win. Feeney ended his decorated career with nine stops for Penn, while
Lopes had one save in just his second appearance this season. Another
senior who stood out was defenseman Maxx Meyer, who had four caused
turnovers and six ground balls.

Irish Top Albany, 14-13, In Overtime Thriller In NCAA Quarterfinals
Kavanagh scores game winner to send Irish to Championship Weekend.
[/URL][/URL][/URL][/URL]
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. ? A Matt Kavanagh goal in overtime gave No. 6 seed Notre Dame a thrilling 14-13 overtime victory over Albany Saturday in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship in front of a sellout and stadium-record crowd of 13,519 at James M. Shuart Stadium.

The Fighting Irish (11-5) trailed 12-7 with just over eight minutes remaining in the contest before ending regulation on a 6-1 run. The surge began on a Nick Ossello goal, which snapped a 6-0 Albany run, and Westy Hopkins scored less than a minute later to make it a three-goal affair. Tallies from Conor Doyle and Sergio Perkovic 36 seconds apart cut the Albany lead to one (12-11) with 6:19 left to play.

The Great Danes (12-6) went back up by two on a Ryan Feuerstein goal with 5:44 remaining, but goals from Hopkins and Perkovic knotted the game by the three-minute mark of the final period. The Notre Dame defense withstood a final Albany possession and goalie Conor Kelly saved a Ty Thompson shot with five seconds left and the game went to overtime.

Kavanagh had a hat trick for the Irish, while fellow attackman Conor Doyle had two goals and three assists. Lyle Thompson paced Albany with three goals and three assists. Notre Dame's Liam O'Connor went 21-of-31 in faceoff attempts.

"What a fantastic atmosphere, it couldn't have been a more fantastic venue," Notre Dame head coach Kevin Corrigan said. "Albany played terrific lacrosse today and deserved a better fate, but I'm pretty glad they didn't get it. It was a heck of a lacrosse game. I couldn't be more proud of our guys. To be in the situation we were in in the fourth quarter … if you were in our huddle you didn't sense any quit. Nobody was hanging their head, they were focused on making some plays and making one at a time. All the credit in the world to our guys."

This is the third Championship Weekend appearance in the last five seasons for Notre Dame and the fourth trip overall in program history. The Irish were semifinalists in 2001 and 2012 and they were the national runner-up in 2010.

Notre Dame will face Maryland in the NCAA semifinals next Saturday at M&T Bank Stadium Baltimore, Md. That game will take place at 1 or 3:30 p.m. (ET) on ESPN2. Maryland topped Bryant, 16-8, in the day's first quarterfinal. The Fighting Irish and Terrapins split two meetings this season. Maryland won the regular-season matchup (12-8), while Notre Dame was victorious in the ACC semifinal showdown (6-5).

Notre Dame led 6-5 at halftime, but the Great Danes outscored the Irish 5-1 in the third quarter. Ty Thompson evened the contest early in the second half and neither team scored for the next five minutes but Scioscia snapped the drought with a timer-on goal to give the Irish a 7-6 lead. The Great Danes answered right back with a Will Stenberg goal that began the 6-0 Albany run. Lyle Thompson gave Albany its first lead of the game (8-7) with 4:45 left in the third quarter. Another goal from Lyle Thompson two minutes later increased the Great Dane to two. Ty Thompson scored with 2.4 seconds left in the period to make it 10-7.

Albany pushed the lead to five (12-7) just over three minutes into the fourth quarter on transition goals from Doug Eich and Matthew Bertrams.

The Fighting Irish scored the first four goals of the game beginning with a man-up tally from Kavanagh. Goals from Doyle, Ossello and Kavanagh made it 4-0 with just under eight minutes remaining in the first quarter. Lyle Thompson put Albany on the board with 7:02 left in the opening period and consecutive scores from Miles Thompson made it 4-3 by the end of the quarter.

Re: National College News DE HS Lax

Notre Dame Notes
? Notre Dame finishes the season with a 12-6 record
and is now 0-2 in the NCAA title game. Both of the Fighting Irish's
losses in the title game have come to the Blue Devils.
? Today's
first quarter saw just two goals, the lowest scoring first quarter in
the NCAA Division I title game since 2011, when Maryland led Virginia,
1-0, at the end of the first. It is tied for the second lowest scoring
quarter in the history of the tournament, matching the 1973, 1976 and
1986 finals. In 1973, Johns Hopkins led Maryland, 2-0, after the first
quarter. In 1976, Maryland and Cornell were tied, 1-1, after one. And in
1986, Virginia and North Carolina were tied, 1-1, at the end of one.
?
Notre Dame was held scoreless for the first 21:55 of today's game. It
is the longest a team has been held scoreless to start the NCAA Division
I title game, since 2000 when Syracuse held Princeton scoreless for the
first 23:53 of the game. Syracuse went on to win the 2000 NCAA title by
a 13-7 score.
? The Fighting Irish were held to just one first half
goal in today's title game. It is the fifth time that a team has been
held to just one first-half goal in the NCAA Division I title game and
the first time since 1988. In 1988, Syracuse led Cornell, 8-1, at the
half and won 13-8. In 1982, North Carolina led Johns Hopkins, 4-1, at
the half before winning 7-5. In 1980, Johns Hopkins led Virginia, 4-1,
at the half and won 9-8. And in 1977, Cornell led Johns Hopkins, 10-1,
at the half and won the title by a 16-8 score. Notre Dame outscored
Duke, 8-6, in the second half and 5-3 in the fourth quarter.
? Notre
Dame's offense ranks 12th in NCAA Division I, averaging 12.00 goals per
game entering today's game. The Fighting Irish were held to 9 goals in
today's loss to the Blue Devils. The Irish's nine goals are thir fewst
since a 6-5 win over the Maryland Terrapins on April 25, 2014. Notre
Dame is now 1-5 this season when held to single-digits and 4-5 when
allowing double-digit goals.
? Matt Kavanagh (A), Conor Kelly (GK) and Sergio Perkovic (M) were named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team for Notre Dame.
?
Conor Kelly finished with 12 saves in today's game, making his sixth
game in the last eight that he has made double-digit saves. For the
tournament, Kelly made 49 saves while allowing just 35 goals for a .583
save percentage. He also posted an 8.69 goals against average in the
four NCAA Tournament games.
? Matt Kavanagh ranks eighth in NCAA
Division I in points per game, averaging 4.24 entering today's game.
Kavanagh was held to 3 (2g, 1a) points versus Duke. He now has 19 goals
and 9 assists in six career NCAA Tournament games and has tallied at
least three points in each of those games.
? With his second goal of
the day (13:42 to play in 4th quarter), Matt Kavanagh tied Randy
Colley's single-season record for points (74, 1995) at Notre Dame.
Kavanagh then broke the record with his assist on Sergio Perkovic's goal
with 11:01 to play in the game. His assist also broke the Notre Dame
single-season record of 32, held by four other players.
? Sergio
Perkovic scored his career-best fifth goal of the game with 49.6 seconds
to play in the fourth quarter. His five goals ties the Notre Dame
record for goals in an NCAA Tournament game (now held by four different
players - including Matt Kavanagh).
? Notre Dame ranks third in NCAA
Division I in man-up offense, scoring 35 goals on 66 opportunities
(.530) entering today's game. Today versus Duke, Notre Dame went just
1-of-3 on man-up (.333).
? Entering today's game, Notre Dame had
allowed 24 goals on 57 man-down situations (.421). Today versus Duke,
Notre Dame allowed 1 goal on 2 man-down situations (.500).

Keane, a food and agribusiness marketing management major from Elora, Ontario, Canada (Centre Wellington HS), scored a goal, dished out two assists, scooped up on groundball, and one his only faceoff attempt to lead the South squad to the victory.

Keane led a South comeback in the fourth quarter as the team won after trailing by two goals with just under 10 minutes remaining. Keane scored a goal with 5:58 left to narrow the North lead to 15-14 and then fed North Carolina's Patrick Foster for the game-tying goal with 5:40 left. The South then scored two more goals to finish off the comeback.

A four-year letterwinner and regular on the Blue Hens attack unit, Keane led the Blue Hens in scoring in 2014 when he scored 33 points on 27 goals and six assists while also contributing 20 groundballs. He scored six man-up goals and had two or more goals in each of the last six games of the season, including a career-high five vs. Ohio State.

For his career, Keane played in 50 games with 29 starts and scored 64 goals and dished out 12 assists. He recorded eight career hat tricks, picked up 42 groundballs, and his 17 career extra-man goals was one shy of the UD record. He played a key backup role for the team in 2011 when the Blue Hens won the Colonial Athletic Association title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
