SUBJECT: University of Delaware Faceoff Specialist Tyler Barbarich Named Preseason All-American by Inside Lacrosse Magazine

DATE:  December 10, 2014

BALTIMORE -- University of Delaware senior men's lacrosse standout Tyler Barbarich, the reigning Colonial Athletic Association faceoff statistical champion, was recognized once again as one of the nation's top faceoff specialists Wednesday as he earned a spot on the Inside Lacrosse Magazine Preseason All-American squad.

Barbarich, a native of Martinsville, N.J. (Bridgewater-Raritan High School) and a second team All-Colonial Athletic Association selection in 2014, was one of just five faceoff specialists throughout the country at the NCAA Division I level mentioned as preseason All-Americans by one of the nation's most respected lacrosse publications and websites.

Bryant's Kevin Massa was selected first team preseason All-American, Rutgers' Joe Nardella was the second team pick, Charlie Raffa of Maryland was the third team selection, and Barbarich, Drexel's Nick Saputo, and Duke's Kyle Rowe shared honorable mention notice.

Massa led the nation in faceoff winning percentage last season with a mark of .688 while Raffa was second (.686), Barbarich was fourth (.638), Nardella was fifth (.632), Rowe was sixth (.625), and Saputo was seventh (.620). Rowe played last season at Stony Brook before transfering to Duke.

A finance major, Barbarich will look to lead the Blue Hens back to the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament for the second straight year this spring as Delaware welcomes back 9 of its top 10 scorers from a squad that went 7-9 and dropped a tough 8-6 decision to Hofstra in the Colonial Athletic Association semifinals.

Playing in 14 games as a junior in 2014, Barbarich won 153 of his 240 faceoff attempts, good for a success rate of 63.8 percent. He also scooped up 83 groundballs, scored one goal, and dished out three assists. He won 50 percent of his faceoff attempts in 12 of his 14 games and won 70 percent or better seven times. He led the CAA and ranked No. 4 nationally in faceoff winning percentage (.638) and ranked third in the CAA and No. 25 nationally in groundballs with 5.93 per game.

For his career, he has played in 37 games and won 344 of 586 faceoff attempts (.587), recorded 178 groundballs, and scored two goals. He ranks No. 3 all-time at Delaware in faceoff winning pct. and is No. 7 in faceoff wins.

Barbarich was one of six CAA players named to the honorable mention All-American team, joining Saputo, midfielders Colin McLinden and TJ Neubauer of league newcomer Fairfield, midfielder Ryan Belka of Drexel, and defender JoJo Ostrander of Towson.

Delaware will open its regular season Feb. 1 at High Point.

WLAX: No. 10/12 Buckeyes Blast Bearcats, 18-5
Sophomore Cian Dabrowski leads the scoring with season-high six points (3g, 3a)

COLUMBUS, Ohio - In its second game of the 2015 season, nine different Buckeyes tallied goals as the 10th-ranked Ohio State women's lacrosse team posted an 18-5 win over Binghamton Saturday afternoon inside at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center. Sophomore attack Cian Dabrowski led the charge with six points on three goals and three assists while junior Rainey Hodgson collected five goals for the Scarlet and Gray.

"I thought overall it was a hard-fought win," head coach Alexis Venechanos said. "Give credit to Binghamton. They came out and played very physical and I thought we stepped up to the challenge and responded very well. But overall I thought we played a good team game and we're excited about our next challenge on the road next weekend against two very good opponents."

Senior midfielder Mary Kate Facchina got the Buckeyes on the board first with her third goal of the season at 25:14. The netter was the first of six-consecutive for the home squad, jumping out to an early 6-0 lead. Hodgson didn't need any help on the sixth goal of the day when she forced a turnover, picked up a groundball and fired in a shot past the BU goalie.

Senior attack Jackie Cifarelli continued to do what she does best: find her open teammates in front of the cage. She helped out on back-to-back goals by Dabrowski and Hodgson, respectively, to extend the lead to 8-1 with 7:32 to go in the half. Senior attack Katie Chase got in on the scoring party, notching her eighth and ninth goals of the season in less than a minute span at 4:23. She finished the day with four goals and leads the team with 10 through two games. Hallie Keselman finished off the dominant first half with her first goal of the season to make the scoreboard read, 13-1.

At half, shots were 20-5 in favor of the Buckeyes. Senior goalie Tori DeScenza played in the first 39 minutes of the contest and made two saves, while classmate goalie Katie Frederick finished off the final 20 minutes between the pipes. DeScenza improved to 2-0 on the year.

Chase and Hodgson each scored in the second half, while freshman Katie Burgee collected her first career goal at 6:53 and junior Emi Breakey also found the back of the at 4:19 to conclude the contest with an 18-5 score. Defensively, the Buckeyes stood strong, forcing 25 Bearcat turnovers. The Scarlet and Gray were also 10-of-12 on draws. Freshman Molly Wood led Ohio State with a team-high five draw controls for the game while adding one goal.

"Overall I think we're doing a good job scoring and defending in the 8-meter area," Venechanos said. "We're looking forward to improving our play in the midfield and cleaning that up a little bit and will look for more possessions off the draw. So we're going to focus on those things because they're going to be very important in our games this weekend."

The team will next hit the road for the first time in 2015, traveling to play Winthrop Feb. 13 before facing Virginia Tech Feb. 15.

No. 9 Virginia Edges No. 7 Men's Lacrosse In Thrilling Season-Opener

BALTIMORE - Ninth-ranked University of Virginia scored the second half's first four goals to take a 10-6 run, but No. 7 Loyola University Maryland rallied to make it a one-goal game twice in the fourth quarter, but the Cavaliers came away with a season-opening 13-12 win Saturday afternoon at Ridley Athletic Complex in front of 3,387 fans.

Neither the Greyhounds, nor the Cavaliers led by more than one goal in the first half, and a Owen Van Arsdale goal off a tough angle on the low right side with 3:21 left in the second quarter, tying the score at 6-6.

Greg Coholan scored two goals 61 seconds apart to start the third, and Matt Emery and Ryan Lukacovic added goals at 9:52 and 6:32 to make it a four-goal Cavaliers' lead.

A Loyola timeout after Lukacovic's goal sparked two-straight goals for the Greyhounds by Zach Herreweyers.

His first, at 6:07, was a sidearm rip from the left side after Nikko Pontrello's feed from behind, and his second was an individual effort off the dodge that culminated with a one-handed shot to beat Virginia goalkeeper Matt Barrett at 5:13.

Zed Williams got one back for the Cavaliers, bouncing in a worm-burner from the left at 3:51, sending the game to the fourth quarter with Virginia up three, 11-8.

Brian Sherlock scored the final period's first with an overhanded finish off a left-alley dodge at 11:47, but Lukacovic scored his second at 7:06 to push Virginia back up three.

Romar Dennis, however, scored his second and third goals of the game, the first at 5:30 and the second an even minute later. His second pulled Loyola within a goal, but Williams came through with his third of the game for Virginia at 3:11 to pad the Cavaliers' lead, 13-11.

Loyola got back within a goal 67 ticks of the clocker later when Jordan Germershausen fed Herreweyers from behind, and Herreweyers scored his third of the game.

The Greyhounds won the ensuing faceoff - Graham Savio was 19-of-28 at the 'X' with nine ground balls for Loyola - but after two shots going wide, a turnover gave the ball back to Virginia with 28.8 seconds left.

Loyola called a timeout to set up its ride, and the Greyhounds forced a turnover before giving the ball away themselves. The Greyhounds again forced a Virginia turnover, but they could not get a shot off before the final buzzer.

The Greyhounds had a 38-27 advantage in ground balls, but the Cavaliers took a 43-38 lead in shots. Both Barrett and Loyola's Pat McEnerney made nine saves between the pipes.

Dennis and Herreweyers each had three goals for the Greyhounds, while Tyler Albrecht and Ryan Fournier scored two a piece. Fournier, a long-stick midfielder, who had seven ground balls and scored the season's first goal seven seconds into the game off the opening faceoff, had two scores.

Pontrello and Sherlock each had a goal and two assists for Loyola, and Mike Kutzer added an assist.

Coholan led all scorers with four goals for Virginia, while Williams tallied three and two assists.

The Greyhounds return to action on Saturday, Feb. 14, at Ridley Athletic Complex where they will host Penn State University at 12 noon.

Jones, Guterding Lead No. 3 Duke Past Air Force, 13-7

February 8, 2015

DURHAM, N.C. - Senior midfielder Myles Jones had three goals and three assists while freshman attackman Justin Guterding added four tallies as No. 3 Duke defeated visiting Air Force, 13-7, at Koskinen Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Duke (2-0) also received a three-goal effort from sophomore attackman Jack Bruckner as the Blue Devils overcame a 5-4 halftime deficit en route to the six-goal victory. The Blue Devils outscored the Falcons (0-1) by a 6-1 margin in the third period as Guterding, who was held scoreless in the opening half after registering six goals in Saturday's win over High Point, found the back of the net three times.

"I think we really tried to value the ball in the first half," Bruckner said. "In the second half we just kind of played our game, slung the ball and played Duke lacrosse."

The Blue Devils outscored the Falcons 9-2 in the second half and held Air Force to just eight shots in the fourth quarter. The win, the 349th career victory for head coach John Danowski, extended Duke's home win streak to 18 dating back to March of 2013.

After a first period which saw the teams deadlocked at 2-2, Duke took a 3-2 advantage on a Jones marker early in the second quarter. Air Force then used a patient offensive attack to counter with three consecutive goals by Austin Smith, Nate Hruby and Chris Walsch. Duke pulled within one goal just prior to intermission on a marker by Deemer Class.

"Coach [Ben] DeLuca thought we should extend the tempo a little bit, extend the field and I think that's what we did," said head coach John Danowski. "We tried to pressure them a little bit, create some turnovers early. We just tried to heat up their attackmen a little bit more when they were subbing their midfield on and off and our defensemen did a nice job of that."

Bruckner and Jones both threw in a goal to open the scoring in third quarter, and after an Air Force goal by James Burke tied the score at 6-6, the Blue Devils used five straight goals - including four from Guterding - to pull away. Senior captain Justin George

"That's just me catching the ball and finishing," said Guterding. "I'm not doing much. These other guys [in the midfield] are unbelievable. They are the ones who create space for me by cutting through, dodging. Jack [Bruckner] is a great finisher and us two are usually on the pipes and we're just there to finish the ball."

At the face-off X, the Rowe brothers - Jack (11-of-19) and Kyle (3-of-5) - combined to secure 14-of-24 draws for the Blue Devils. Jack Rowe scooped up a team-high six ground balls.

In goal, Luke Aaron posted 10 saves for the Blue Devils while his counterpart, Doug Gouchoe, was credited with 13 stops.

Air Force was paced offensively by Smith's pair of goals while Burke and Christopher Allen finished with one goal and one assist each.

Duke is next in action on Saturday, Feb. 14 as the Blue Devils face top-ranked Denver in Kennesaw, Ga. Face-off is set for 1 p.m.

PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania men's lacrosse team played
the earliest game in program history, by date, on Saturday -- and the
weather was every bit of mid-February. Despite that, the 13th-ranked
Quakers dusted off the snowy conditions and took care of business with a
10-8 victory over UMBC at Franklin Field.

Kevin McGeary scored three goals in his collegiate debut to lead the Penn
attack, while Nick Doktor recorded three points (2g, 1a) and Austin Kreinz
added a pair of goals. Junior Rob Savage saw the first significant action
of his career on the face-off X, and ended up with 18 wins on 22 draws.

UMBC - which had opened the season last week with a loss to No. 5 Johns
Hopkins -- needed exactly a minute to get on the board Saturday, Pat Young
taking a pass from Dylan McDermott and rifling a shot past Penn goalkeeper
Jimmy Sestilio for a 1-0 lead.

Penn quickly took over after that. McGeary knotted the score on an
unassisted goal just 1:17 after Young's tally, and then Chris Hilburn and
Kreinz pushed the Quakers ahead with two more unassisted goals before the
game was five minutes old. Kreinz later added his second, to make it 4-1,
before Nate Lewnes scored a pair of goals for UMBC to make the score 4-3
after one quarter.

Freshman Reilly Hupfeldt scored a man-up goal for Penn just 23 seconds
into the second period, but that was matched midway through the quarter by
Young, and the teams went to halftime with the Quakers leading, 5-4.

Penn opened up some room with the first two goals of the third quarter,
both of them from McGeary as he beat his man and then the goalkeeper with
his shots. UMBC got one back when Jack Gannon scored, but Doktor quickly
restored the three-goal edge off an Isaac Bock assist.

Doktor later made it 9-5, opening up the fourth-quarter scoring off a
Kevin Brown assist, before Lewnes scored his third of the game. Joe
McCallion needed just 15 seconds to put Penn up 10-6. Lewnes and Drew
Bordsody scored late goals for UMBC, but it was not enough on this day.

Sestilio got the start in goal and had six saves in the first half; he was
replaced at halftime by John Lopes, who made one stop in his 30-minute
shift. At the other end, Connor Gordon had nine saves for UMBC.

Penn will get right back into action on Tuesday, renewing its series with
local rival Saint Joseph's. The Quakers will invade Hawk Hill for a 4 p.m.
faceoff.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - For the second week in a row, Christopher May, a graduate student on the Ohio State men's lacrosse team, has been named the Big Ten Specialist of the Week. In the Buckeyes' last two wins, May, from McLean, Va., won 26-of-36 faceoffs (.722) and picked up 20 groundballs.

In Ohio State's 10-6 victory over Robert Morris Tuesday, May won 15-of-20 (.750) faceoffs and picked up 11 groundballs. It was just the second time a Buckeye had more than 10 groundballs in a game since 1988. Sunday in the Buckeyes' 10-3 win over Delaware, May won 11-of-16 (.688) faceoffs and had nine groundballs, along with his first assist as a Buckeye.

May, who graduated from Georgetown in the spring and is enrolled in graduate school for public administration at Ohio State, leads the Big Ten and is seventh nationally with a .754 winning percentage. He ranks first in the league and third in the NCAA with 10.0 groundballs per game.

May and the Buckeyes (2-1) close their three-game homestand at noon Saturday when they host Dartmouth inside Woody Hayes Athletic Center.

THE PEOPLE. THE TRADITION. THE EXCELLENCE

HILADELPHIA - It may be a new year for the University of Pennsylvania
men's lacrosse team, but it looks like the "Cardiac Quakers" might be up
to some of their old tricks.

On Tuesday night, the 14th-ranked Quakers were down 7-0 in the first half
and 9-4 after three quarters at local rival Saint Joseph's (1-2). However,
they came all the way back to take a 10-9 lead in regulation, allowed the
Hawks to tie it, then stopped three SJU chances before Nick Doktor scored
on a brilliant individual effort to give Penn the 11-10 victory.

Penn (2-0) was able to get within 8-3 by halftime, as Isaac Bock opened
Penn's scoring with 10:24 to play in the second quarter and then Joe
McCallion netted a pair of goals less than a minute apart. In the third
quarter, Reilly Hupfeldt scored a man-up goal but that was matched by
SJU's Kyle Bruun.

Penn did not need a lot of time to draw level in the fourth. Freshman
long-stick middie Connor Keating got the offense started just 59 seconds
into the period, and then McCallion netted his third of the night 1:11
after that. Nick Doktor made it 9-7 with 10:13 to play in the quarter, and
just 39 seconds after that Austin Kreinz scored his first of the night to
make it 9-8. The comeback was complete with 7:05 still left to play, when
Chris Hupfeldt beat his man along the left side and ripped a shot.

Kevin McGeary then gave Penn its first lead of the ngiht with 5:09 to go
with an unassisted goal -- in fact, all six goals in the period were
unassisted -- but Saint Joseph's was able to right the ship momentarily
when Kevin Forster beat John Lopes with 3:45 left in regulation.

Saint Joseph's had a chance to win it at the end of regulation, but a
great defensive play by Penn knocked the ball out of the stick of a
point-blank shooter with the clock nearing triple zeroes. That sent the
contest to overtime.

Saint Joseph's won the opening faceoff in the extra session, and after a
lengthy possession the Hawks put two shots on goal that John Lopes fended
off. Chris Hilburn then forced a turnover and got the ball into the
offensive zone for Penn, and after a timeout the Quakers used a long
possession that ended with Doktor's coming around the right post from
behind the goal and beating SJU goalkeeper Pat Dallon to the stick side.

Jimmy Sestilio once again got the start in the Penn goal, and he did all
he could to keep the Quakers in the game in the opening half with nine
saves as SJU outshot the Red and Blue, 25-16. Lopes came on at halftime
and finished with three saves -- including the two in overtime -- as the
Penn defense clamped down and allowed just seven Hawks shots after the
break.

Penn is off until next Tuesday, when the Quakers will hit the road to face
No. 7 Maryland. The Quakers and the Terps will face off at 5 p.m.

Loyola Greyhounds vs. Holy Cross Crusaders

Saturday, February 21, 2015 | 1:00 p.m.
Baltimore, Md. | Ridley Athletic Complex

Quick Hits About The 'Hounds

Loyola University Maryland men's lacrosse opens its second season in the Patriot League on Saturday, Feb. 21, when it hosts College of the Holy Cross at Ridley Athletic Complex.
The Greyhounds completed their first season in the conference with an 8-0 regular-season record and then went on to win the Patriot League Tournament title to earn the League's automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.
Loyola is one of three teams nationally (along with Massachusetts and Villanova) to play three ranked teams to open the 2015 season.
Five players - Zach Herreweyers (11), Brian Sherlock (6), Tyler Albrecht (6), Nikko Pontrello (4) and Romar Dennis (4) - have combined to score 88.6 percent of Loyola's 35 goals this season, a total of 31 through three games.
Loyola has won 60 percent of faceoffs this year following an 18-of-30 performance against Towson. Graham Savio was won 35-of-61 (57.4), while Brendan Donovan had a 10-of-13 performance (76.9) against the Tigers.
Jay Drapeau and Zack Sirico both scored their first collegiate goals at Towson.

Last Time Out

Loyola scored the game's first four goals in a span of just 5:21, and it took a 6-2 advantage into the second quarter on Wednesday afternoon against Towson, en route to a 15-11 victory against the 14th-ranked Tigers.
The Greyhounds eventually built a 15-8 lead before Towson scored the final 3:03 of regulation.
Zach Herreweyers scored the game's first goal 41 ticks into the contest, and his second goal on an extra-man opportunity at 9:29 bookended two Brian Sherlock unassisted tallies 59 seconds apart, giving Loyola a 4-0 lead.
Herreweyers would record his third-straight hat trick by the end of the first quarter, and he finished with a career-high five goals.
Sherlock, Nikko Pontrello and Jay Drapeau scored three-straight to open the second half, and Loyola led by six 5:13 into the third quarter.
Pontrello and Sherlock each scored three goals, and Tyler Albrecht had two goals and an assist. Pontrello and Romar Dennis both tallied two assists.
Brendan Donovan sparked Loyola's faceoff unit in the second quarter, winning 10-of-13 restarts in the game.

In The Polls

Loyola is ranked eighth in the USILA coaches', Cascade/Maverick Inside Lacrosse and Lacrosse Magazine media polls as of Feb. 16. The Greyhounds began the season ranked seventh in the coaches and Inside Lacrosse versions and ninth in the Lacrosse Magazine version.

Series History

Loyola will meet Holy Cross for the second time on Saturday when the Crusaders make their first trip to Ridley Athletic Complex.
In last year's meeting between the teams, Holy Cross took a 3-2 lead on a Clay Haarman goal with 6:36 to go in the first quarter, but Nikko Pontrello scored the game's next goal 56 seconds into the second quarter, sparking a 14-0 Loyola run that would see the Greyhounds to a 16-4 win in their first-ever Patriot League game.
Pontrello finished with six goals, including four in a row to start the third quarter, and Brian Schultz tallied seven points on three goals and four assists. Justin Ward added an extra-man goal and assisted on five others, and Kevin Ryan scored three times for Loyola.

Digging In On Defense

Loyola's defense had two stretches of holding Penn State without a goal for better than 20 minutes in last Saturday's 8-6 victory, and the Greyhounds also buckled down on defense for the final 8:21 to preserve the win.
After yielding the game's first goal 1:38 into play, Loyola did not allow a Penn State goal for the next 20 minutes, 18 seconds, and the offense scored three in a row. Following a Nittany Lions score with 8:04 on the second-quarter clock, the Greyhounds held them without a goal for 20:59, stretching their advantage to 7-2 in the process.
Penn State did, however, score four unanswered over the course of 8:43 to draw within a goal, 7-6, with 8:22 left in regulation, but Loyola did not yield another score for the remainder of the game.
In Wednesday's win over Towson, the Greyhounds also put together a stretch of better than 15 minutes without yielding a goal. After the Tigers drew within four, 12-8, with 3:53 left in the third quarter, Loyola did not allow another goal for 15:50.

Hat Tricks For Herreweyers

Zach Herreweyers has opened the season with three goals in each of the Greyhounds' games, scoring his 11 this season on just 23 total shots. He recorded his hat trick against Towson in less than 15 minutes of game time, and he finished with a career-high five goals.
His hat tricks against Virginia, Penn State and Towson give him eight in his career with Loyola. Herreweyers has scored three or more goals in better than half of his collegiate games. He saw action in 10 games as a freshman in 2013, one last year and three so far in 2015 for a total of 14.
With 30 career goals in 14 games, he is averaging 2.14 goals per game and 2.36 points with 33 career points.

Causing Turnovers

Penn State had 22 turnovers Saturday in its 8-6 loss to Loyola, 17 of which were the result of Greyhounds caused turnovers. The 22 turnovers were the most by a Loyola opponent since Hobart had 23 on April 20, 2013, in Geneva, New York.
Loyola's 17 caused turnovers were its high since posting the same number in a 13-8 victory on March 20, 2013, at Georgetown.
Six players were credited with two or more caused turnovers against the Nittany Lions led by three each from Pat Frazier and Ryan Fournier. Jack Carrigan, Jason Crane, Mike Kutzer and Jared Mintzlaff each had two.

Frazier Draws National & League Honors

Senior co-captain Pat Frazier earned a pair of awards after the Greyhounds' 8-6 victory over Penn State. He drew Corvias Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, Feb. 16, and just before the Towson game, he was honored as the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) National Defender of the Week.
The senior from Montgomery County, Maryland, had career-highs of six ground balls and three caused turnovers to go, and he held his primary one-on-one matchup to just one goal on two shots. In the Nittany Lions' season-opener Mike Sutton had two goals and an assist, and last year, he averaged 2.3 goals per game.
Frazier is a starter for the third-straight season on the Greyhounds' defense and has nine ground balls and four caused turnovers through two games. The former walk-on began his career as a long-stick midfielder, but he made his first career start in the Greyhounds' third game of 2013, at Towson, and has started Loyola's last 34 games.
In addition to his work on the field, Frazier is one of 14 members of Loyola's Green & Grey Society, a group of students who are liaisons to the University's administration.

From The Middle

Three of the Greyhounds' five top scorers through three games have come from Loyola's first midfield unit of Tyler Albrecht, Romar Dennis and Brian Sherlock.
Sherlock is tied for the team-lead in assists (4), and he is tied with Albrecht for second on the squad with six goals. Albrecht has scored two goals in each of Loyola's first two games, and Dennis has four goals and three assists after dishing out a career-best two assists versus the Tigers..
Of Loyola's 35 goals and 17 assists, 45.7 percent of goals and 52.9 percent of assists have come from this unit.

Doing A Little Of Everything

While providing 12 combined goals and 18 overall points, two members of Loyola's first midfield line, Tyler Albrecht and Brian Sherlock, give the Greyhounds much more than just offensive firepower.
The duo are regulars on faceoff wings for the Greyhounds and often drop back onto the defensive end of the field as short-sticks. Albrecht is fourth on the team with 10 ground balls, while the two have helped Loyola win 60 percent of faceoffs.

Great Start On Restarts

Graham Savio put up an excellent performance at the faceoff 'X' to start the season, winning 19-of-28 restarts (67.9 percent) against a pair of Virginia faceoff specialists.
His 19 wins and 28 faceoffs taken were both career-highs, and he picked up a team-best nine ground balls, a number that was three off his career-high.
In the game at Towson, Brendan Donovan came on to provide a needed spark on restarts. Donovan won 10-of-13 faceoffs, helping the Greyhounds win 18-of-30 in the game. Overall, Loyola has won 45-of-75 (60 percent) of faceoffs this year.

Waiting On The Wings

A large part of Loyola's success against Virginia in the faceoff game was the play of its wings. Long-stick midfielder Ryan Fournier tallied five of his seven ground balls on faceoffs, and he led the Greyhounds charge in transition.
Savio cleanly won the game's opening faceoff to the stick of Fournier who picked the ground ball, raced into the box and gave the Greyhounds a 1-0 lead just seven seconds into the season.
Fournier and Savio are two of the Greyhounds' top players in the ground ball category. Fournier leads the team with 14, while Savio is tied with defender Pat Frazier for second with 12.

Pontrello Putting Up Points

Nikko Pontrello has been held without a point just twice in the last 20 games, since the start of the 2014 season. Penn State held him scoreless last Saturday, and Navy turned the trick in 2014, snapping a streak of 10-straight games to open 2014 in which he had two or more goals. He finished the year scoring at least one goal in every game but the contest at Navy, and he tallied two or more in 14-of-17 outings.
Pontrello finished his junior campaign ranked fifth nationally in goals per game (3.0), and he was tied for third in NCAA Division I in total goals with 51. His 51 goals last season rank third in school single-season history, three shy of Eric Lusby's 2012 record. His 63 points are tied for Mike Ruland (1988) for 10th.
He scored once and had two assists in the 2015 opener against Virginia, and he then put up five points with three goals and two assists versus Towson.

Plenty Of Fresh Faces

Seven players made their Loyola debuts, with six playing in their first collegiate games when the Greyhounds opened 2015 against Virginia: Brian Begley, Zach Davliakos, Jay Drapeau, Johnny Giuffreda, Foster Huggins, Jared Mintzlaff and Dan Simonetti (a transfer who played in a pair of games last year at Ohio State). Another player, Mike Orefice, made his Loyola debut versus Penn State, and two more, Ryder Harkins and Grant Limone saw their first action at Towson.
Additionally, five players - attackers Matt Cunningham and Jordan Germershausen, defenders Jack Carrigan and Jason Crane and goalkeeper Pat McEnerney - made their first collegiate starts against Virginia, and Mike Perkins saw his first extended playing time in the game.

Preseason Prognostications

For the second year in as many seasons in the conference, Loyola topped the Patriot League preseason poll by a vote of conference coaches, leading the nine-team rankings with 12 first-place votes and 123 points. The U.S. Military Academy garnered one top vote and 110 points, while Lehigh University received the other five top nods and 109 points. Bucknell University, Colgate University, the U.S. Naval Academy, Boston University, Lafayette College and College of the Holy Cross rounded out the poll.

Honors Candidates

Four Loyola players earned recognition on the Preseason All-Patriot League Team, and the same quartet garnered Face-Off Yearbook Preseason All-America honors.
Nikko Pontrello was named to the All-America Second Team, while Ryan Fournier, Pat Frazier and Brian Sherlock were received honorable mention.

Get To Ten

Since Charley Toomey became head coach at Loyola in 2006, the Greyhounds have scored 10 or more goals on 70 occasions. Following the win against Towson, Loyola has won 81.4 percent of those games (57-13).

Since 2012

Loyola has the best winning percentage in NCAA Division I men's lacrosse since the start of the 2012 season. The Greyhounds are 46-9 during that stretch (18-1 in 2012, 11-5 in 2013, 15-2 last season and 2-1 this year) for a .836 mark.
Duke has won 50 games during the run, but the Blue Devils are second to the Greyhounds in winning percentage by nearly six percent (50-14, .781).

Not Just Defensive Midfield

Ryan Fournier developed into one of the nation's top long-stick midfielders as the 2014 season progressed. The Canadian picked up 32 ground balls and caused nine turnovers while becoming an offensive weapon in transition.
Fournier, who was a short-stick midfielder at the beginning of the fall season his freshman year, scored four goals and assisted on two. He was named to the Preseason All-Patriot League Team and a Preseason All-America candidate.
He showed his skills on the first possession of the 2015 season, picking up the ground ball off a Graham Savio faceoff win and scoring seven seconds into the game against Virginia. Fournier finished with a career-high seven ground balls and two goals, his first multi-goal output of his career. He matched that high with seven more ground balls against Penn State.

Patriot League Network

All non-televised Loyola men's lacrosse home games, will be broadcast digitally in free HD on the Patriot League Network. Glenn Clark and Chris Gunkel '91 will call the action against Holy Cross.

Powered by Campus Insiders, the Network started last year and provided one of the most comprehensive digital packages of any conference nationally. The link to each game can be found at LoyolaGreyhounds.com.

Rutgers Men's Lacrosse Closes Out Wagner
Trasolini, Goss, Toliver all score three goals for RU
Box Score

Highlights

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - In the first midweek action of the season, Rutgers men's lacrosse closed the game strong, finishing off a 13-10 win over Wagner. The Scarlet Knights improved to 2-2 on the season, spurred by three players completing hat tricks and a 4-1 margin on the fourth quarter scoreboard.

Three different players potted three goals for Rutgers: Christian Trasolini, Brian Goss, and Chad Toliver. Bridgewater, N.J. native Scott Bieda led the Scarlet Knights with five points (two goals, three assists).

"We had a great second half today," Rutgers head coach Brian Brecht said. "Every game at this level, you have to come ready to play. I was happy with the energy in the fourth quarter coming down the stretch to get the win."

The Scarlet Knights opened the game with two quick scores, taking advantage of an early man-up opportunity with a Trasolini goal and adding to it with a score from Bieda. Tallies from Goss and Jules Heningburg extended the lead to 4-1 just eight minutes into the game.

The Seahawks cut the lead to 4-3 with two goals to close the first frame. Trasolini and Bieda added to the RU ledger, but Wagner kept pace and tied the game at 6-6 with 2:15 left in the first half.

The Scarlet Knights finished the first half strong, scoring twice in the final 14 seconds to take a two-goal advantage into halftime. Toliver scored his first of the day with 14 seconds remaining. RU gained one final possession and made it count with a highlight-reel goal. Bieda sent a pass in from behind the net, where Goss scored a diving goal with just one second remaining.

Coming out of the locker room, Trasolini completed his hat trick to give RU a 9-6 lead early in the third. However, Wagner responded with three consecutive goals, tying the game at 9-9 entering the final quarter.

In the fourth, RU put four goals in the net to ensure the victory. Goss tallied his third of the night for a 10-9 lead, but Wagner again had an answer to equalize. The Scarlet Knights earned a man-up opportunity, where Bieda fed Henningburg for the game-clincher at the 11:34 mark. Toliver scored two more goals late in the fourth, icing the 13-10 victory.

"Give credit to our specialty units," Brecht said after RU converted on both extra man opportunities. "The man-up unit gave us two big goals, especially the game-winning goal with Scott Bieda, our captain, to Jules (Heningburg) down low, I was very proud of that group."

Jake Anderson saw his first game action of the season, playing the first half, making seven saves and earning the victory. Kris Alleyne made three saves in the second half. Rutgers held a 46-26 advantage in ground balls and 39-34 in shots.

Next up for the Scarlet Knights is a Saturday matchup against Monmouth, beginning at 12 p.m. at High Point Solution Stadium.

Postgame Notes
- Chad Tolliver had a career-high three goals.
- Brian Goss' three goals tied a career-mark done twice previously, including last season at Wagner.
- Christian Trasolini had his second multi-goal game of the season.
- Christian Scarpello had his first collegiate point with an assist in the first quarter
- Joe Nardella was 18-of-24 at the faceoff "X", his best faceoff game of the season.
- Nardella paced the team with 10 ground balls, his season high.
- Freshman Jules Heningburg totaled two goals and one assist for three points, tying his career-highs.
- Alex Hatzopoulos, Danny Plant, Jake Anderson, and Brian Lenskold made their season debut.

PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel men's lacrosse team overcame a four-goal second-half deficit by the end of the third quarter, but could not carry momentum over into the fourth as the Dragons fell to Villanova on Tuesday, 14-11. The Dragons, who trailed 8-4 early in the third quarter, scored three straight culminating with a Robert Frazee goal with just 26 seconds left in the period to tie things up at 10 apiece. Villanova responded by netting the first four goals of the final quarter, however, as the Wildcats hung on for the win at Vidas Field.

Cole Shafer and Frazee each netted three goals, with Shafer adding an assist. Ryan Belka had a goal and five assists to help power the Dragons' comeback effort. Mason Pynn also scored twice. Cal Winkelman, who came on in goal after halftime, had six saves. Nick Saputo had an outstanding day at the faceoff X, winning 21 of 28 faceoffs and picking up 18 ground balls.

Villanova's Eric Gartner scored an unassisted goal to get the scoring underway just over four minutes into the proceedings. Less than a minute later, Joseph Rainoldi had an answer for the Dragons, an unassisted score of his own to even things up. After two Wildcat goals, Shafer netted his first off a feed from Belka at the 3:09 mark of the first quarter. Pynn followed, converting on a set-up from Shafer to pull Drexel back even with 1:35 left on the first quarter clock.

That would be the last time the Dragons were even with Villanova until the end of the third quarter. The Wildcats scored just 27 seconds before the end of the first, a goal that would spark a four-goal run for Villanova as they took a 7-3 lead. Drexel went 14:59 between scores, with Pynn's unassisted second goal allowing the Dragons to go into the locker room trailing by just three, 7-4.

After Villanova's Jack Curran, who would finish with three second-half goals and an assist, scored 51 seconds into the third quarter, the Dragons came to life. Frazee wasted no time getting on the board after the ensuing faceoff, won by Saputo and dished off to Jacob O'Donnell, who found Frazee on the right side to power home the score. Just 16 more seconds elapsed before Frazee struck again, this time earning Hank Brown the assist after another Saputo faceoff victory.

Curran scored again to stem the tide, but Shafer answered at the 10:35 mark, once again taking a feed from Belka and putting it past Villanova goaltender Dan Willis. One more Wildcats goal put Villanova on top 10-7, but Shafer, Belka and Frazee would score the next three goals of the game over a span of 6:42 to pull the Dragons even. Jules Raucci assisted on Belka's goal, while Belka himself set up the other two.

The Dragons were able to come back thanks to Saputo's day with faceoffs as well as their care with the ball. Drexel turned the ball over just twice in the third quarter after giving it away seven times in the first. The fourth quarter, however, saw the Dragons win five of six faceoffs only to turn the ball over four times. Villanova got the lead back with 12:36 to play on a Danny Seibel goal. Seibel's four goals led the Wildcats. They would not relinquish this lead, as Villanova held Drexel off the scoreboard for 14:35 to open the fourth quarter and 15:01 overall stretching back to the third. O'Donnell netted his first career goal with 25 ticks remaining, but it was too late for the Dragons as Villanova emerged with the win.

Drexel will be back in search of its first win on Saturday when the Dragons head south to College Park to take on Maryland. That game will begin at 12:00 p.m.

Monmouth Stuns WLAX In 2OT, 13-12
Hawks notch game-winner with 17 seconds remaining in second overtime

PISCATAWAY, N.J (Feb. 25, 2015) - The Rutgers women's lacrosse team suffered its second loss of the season Wednesday evening at High Point Solutions Stadium, succumbing to a furious Monmouth comeback in a 13-12 double overtime defeat. The Scarlet Knights (1-2) and Hawks (3-0) traded goals in the first overtime prior to a Monmouth goal in sudden victory fashion with 17 seconds remaining in the second extra period.

Two Scarlet Knights posted career performances in the hard fought loss. Senior goalie Candice Dandridge (Cherry Hill, N.J.) stopped a career-high 11 shots and made a number of big saves, also resetting her previous career-high with four ground balls.

Junior attack Halley Barnes (Garnet Valley, Pa.) led RU offensively with a career-best five points and five goals. Barnes also recorded personal bests with six free position shots, three free position goals, and eight shots overall.

Rutgers controlled the opening period of play by matching its game-high scoring output on the year to lead, 10-4, at halftime. Barnes led the way with three goals in the first half, going 3-for-4 on free position attempts. Three Scarlet Knights posted two-goal games in the opening period - junior Kim Kolodny (Farmingdale, N.Y.), redshirt senior Lauren Sbrilli (Martinsville, N.J.), and sophomore Amanda Turturro (Farmingdale, N.Y.).

Coming out of the intermission, the Hawks tallied seven goals to one for Rutgers to force overtime. In the first minute of OT, the Hawks' Marial Pierce tallied an unassisted goal to give Monmouth a one-goal cushion, 12-11.

The clock ticked down steadily with Rutgers possessing in the final minute, as the Scarlet Knights' first crack at the deficit came from Sbrilli on a free-position shot.

With just 10 seconds remaining, Sbrilli again fired wide, but RU retained possession and was fouled for one last opportunity outside the fan. Sbrilli hastily flipped to Barnes along the left side, who whipped the ball at cage with two seconds left for the 12-12 equalizer.

Rutgers fought off two player-down opportunities in the second overtime after a pair of yellow cards, and appeared to be headed to a third OT with the Hawks. But after Barnes' final free-position attempt of the game was saved, Monmouth stormed down field on its clear, going right at the cage for a goal from Allison Stathuis with 16 seconds left on the clock.

RU hits the road for the second time this season on Saturday, Feb. 28 at Delaware. The Scarlet Knights and Blue Hens (3-1), who received votes in the latest IWLCA Coaches Poll, will begin action at 1 p.m.

Jones, Class Named to Tewaaraton Award Watch List

February 26, 2015

DURHAM, N.C.-Duke University junior midfielders Myles Jones and Deemer Class are among the 50 men's lacrosse players on the 2015 Tewaaraton Award watch list the Tewaaraton Foundation announced Thursday evening. Jones and Class both earned All-America honors in their sophomore seasons.

The Tewaaraton Award watch list is comprised of the top players across all three divisions. The list includes returning first team All-Americans as well as numerous other players who left a mark on the lacrosse landscape a year ago.

Jones, a 2014 second team All-American, headlines Duke's offense this season with 12 goals and 12 assists. He has registered a hat trick in all four games and twice has scored seven points in a game this year. He recently became the 43rd Blue Devil to reach the 100 career points benchmark and has 108 for his career. The Huntington, N.Y., native is 38 points shy of passing Jim Gonnella as the highest scoring midfielder in Duke history.

A 2014 first team All-American, Class had a breakout season a year ago with a Duke midfield record 65 points from 38 goals and 27 assists. With 11 points to his name this season, the native of Baltimore, Md., is four points shy of joining Jones on the 100 points scorer list. For his career he has 57 goals and 39 assists for 96 points.

Full Tewaaraton Release

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers men's lacrosse senior midfielder Joe Nardella was named to the 2015 Tewaaraton Award Watch List, it was announced by the Tewaaraton Foundation on Thursday night. Nardella is one of 50 men's players named in contention for the award. First presented in 2001, the Tewaaraton Award is recognized as the preeminent lacrosse award, annually honoring the top male and female college lacrosse player in the United States.

"This is a great honor for Joe to be recognized for this distinguished award," head coach Brian Brecht said. "Joe certainly has been a leader for our program over his career, both on the field at the face-off 'X' and on campus. I am proud of him and the accomplishments he has had thus far in a Rutgers Lacrosse uniform."

The Cazenovia, N.Y. native is a two-time captain for the Scarlet Knights, and is one of the top faceoff men in the nation. Last season Nardella posted a .632 (206-of-326) face-off winning percentage, which was the fifth best mark in the nation.

Through four games the season, Nardella is 51-of-80 (.638) on faceoffs, and leads the squad with 31 ground balls. He has also collected three assists. His 7.75 ground balls per game rank second in the Big Ten and ninth in the nation, while he currently sits 13th nationally in face-off winning percentage. Nardella was named a Preseason All-American (Second Team) by Inside Lacrosse, and was the 36th overall selection in the 2015 Major League Lacrosse Draft by the Boston Cannons.

The last Rutgers player to be added to the Tewaaraton Award Watch List was Will Mangan in 2012. Justin Pennington, Chris O'Dougherty, and Greg Havalchak were also previously recognized on the award's watch list.

On April 23, the field will be narrowed to 25 men's and 25 women's nominees. Nominees can be players on the watch lists or players not on the watch lists, effectively allowing for a third round of additions. Five men's and five women's finalists will be announced on May 7 and invited to the ceremony. The Tewaaraton Award Ceremony will be held in Washington, D.C., on May 28, 2015, at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian.

The Scarlet Knights are back in action on Saturday, when they will host Monmouth at 12 p.m.

Guterding's Nine Points Lead Duke Past Harvard, 21-14

February 28, 2015

DURHAM, N.C. - Freshman attackman Justin Guterding enjoyed a nine-point afternoon with six goals and three assists to lead No. 6 Duke to a 21-14 victory over No. 10 Harvard in men's lacrosse action on Saturday in Durham, N.C. Eight different Blue Devils scored at least one goal in the victory.

"I'm just trying to get open for the middies," said Guterding. "Chad Cohan had a great day with three [goals] and two [assists]. Myles [Jones] and Deemer [Class], they create the space and are drawing doubles. We're just running our offense and it's just going to be open. Coaches just tell us to keep doing our job and we'll get a lot of points."

Following a 13-day layoff, the Blue Devils (4-1) posted a season-high 21 goals - 10 in the first half - on 58 shots en route to their 19th consecutive home victory. Jack Bruckner added four markers for Duke while Chad Cohan chipped a three-goal, two-assist performance. Harvard drops to 1-1 on the year.

Senior Jack Rowe was outstanding at the faceoff X, winning 24-of-35 draws and picking up 17 ground balls. Both are career highs for the Vienna, Va., native, while the 17 ground balls are the most since Brendan Fowler had 18 against Syracuse last March. The 24 faceoff wins match Fowler's total against the Orange a year ago and are one shy of tying his 25 wins versus North Carolina in 2013. Overall, Duke won 27-of-39 faceoffs.

"For the first three years I had CJ [Costabile] and Brendan [Fowler] as really good role models to learn from," said Rowe. "This year being a senior, I just want to step up knowing guys are kind of looking at me to get them the ball. The faceoff is a team game. There are three guys and the wings we have are the best in the country."

The first quarter featured eight total goals, with Harvard (1-1) claiming a 2-1 lead less than four minutes into the contest on a goal by Philip Wagley. Duke responded with a 6-1 run to take a 7-3 advantage on Guterding's tally at the 13:34 mark of the second period. Harvard, capitalizing on a few Blue Devil miscues, used three consecutive goals to close the half to trim Duke's lead to 10-8 at intermission.

The Blue Devils outscored the Crimson by a 4-2 margin in the third quarter and after Deke Burns tallied early in the fourth quarter to make the score 14-11 in favor of the Blue Devils, Duke pulled away with another 6-1 spurt. Guterding again headlined the run with a pair of tallies to bring his season total to 20.

Other multi-goal scorers for the Blue Devils included Deemer Class (2), Myles Jones (2) and Tanner Scott (2). Defenseman Ethan Powley carded a team-high three caused turnovers. Freshman Mitch Russell threw in a goal and handed out an assist in his first career start as the attacking trio of Guterding, Bruckner and Russell combined for 16 of Duke's 31 points.

In the Duke net, starter Luke Aaron was credited with nine saves while allowing 12 goals. His counterpart, Harvard's Jake Gambitsky, posted 14 saves while surrendering 19 goals.

For the Crimson, Devin Dwyer had two goals and three assists.

Duke will host Providence Sunday at 5 p.m. on ESPN3.

WLAX: No. 8/10 Buckeyes Fall to No. 14/15 Stanford, 12-10
Buckeyes will look to bounce back vs. Niagara at 1 p.m. tomorrow at the Woody Hayes Indoor Field

COLUMBUS, Ohio - No. 8/10 Ohio State dropped its first game of the season Saturday to No. 14/15 Stanford, 12-10, at the Woody Hayes Indoor Facility in Columbus. The loss drops Ohio State to 4-1 on the year while Stanford improves to 3-0. The Buckeyes will look to rebound at 1 p.m. Sunday vs. Niagara.

Both teams traded goals early on in the first 3 minutes and the score was tied 2-2. But three straight goals by the Cardinal put Stanford up 5-2 and forced Ohio State coach Alexis Venechanos to call a timeout to regroup her team. The Buckeyes responded with a 4-1 run over the next 6 minutes to tie the game at 6-6.

Katie Chase first found Jennifer Porretto to make it 5-3. Thirty-three seconds later, Mary Kate Facchina found a cutting Rainey Hodgson, cutting the lead to one. Stanford then went back up by two goals until Facchina scored two consecutive unassisted goals - just 14 seconds apart - to tie the game at 6-6 with 10:37 left in the half. Stanford eventually led 8-6 at the half after goals by Rachel Ozer and Lucy Dikeou.

The Buckeyes struck first after halftime just 3 minutes in when Katie Chase's 19th goal of the season made the score 8-7. But unfortunately for Ohio State, that would be as close as the Buckeyes would come the rest of the way. Stanford mounted a 12-8 lead after Kelsey Murray scored her fifth goal of the game with 8:17 left. But Ohio State never quit fighting and battled back behind two straight goals by Dabrowski, but the Buckeyes eventually ran out of time in their first setback of year.

As expected between these two Top 15 teams, stats were fairly even across the board. Ohio State outshot the Cardinal 26-24 and also won the draw control battle 13-11.

Facchina (2g, 1a) and Chase (1g, 2a) led Ohio State with three points each while Hodgson and Dabrowski finished with two goals apiece. Jackie Cifarelli finished with one goal and one assist and Porretto also finished with one goal. Chase led the team with a career-high nine draw controls and goalie Tori DeScenza made seven saves for the Buckeyes.

Murray led Stanford with five goals while Allie DeCar made nine saves in goal.

May scored his first goal as a Buckeye at 2:43 to put Ohio State up 6-4, but a goal from Marquette's Liam Byrnes with 59 seconds left in the quarter after a MU timeout again made it a one-goal game (6-5). Ohio State outshot Marquette, 9-6, in the stanza and the MU goalie made five saves.

The Buckeyes scored the only three goals of the third quarter to go ahead, 9-5. Planning set up Hunter at 13:02 and Brown scored unassisted at 7:41. Sophomore John Kelly nabbed his first goal of the season with 31 seconds left in the quarter. The teams combined for 11 shots in the quarter, with Ohio State ahead, 7-4.

Marquette came from behind for the win in the fourth quarter with five goals. The Golden Eagles made it a one-goal game with tallies at 14:10, 13:34 and 9:21. At 1:44, Marquette's Kyle Whitlow tied the game at nine. Marquette won the next faceoff and called timeout. The Golden Eagles held the ball and with 11 seconds left in regulation, Kyran Clarke scored for Marquette's first lead of the game. A Buckeye shot with time winding down was saved to seal the win for the Golden Eagles. Shots were 9-5 in favor of Marquette in the quarter.

Ohio State outshot Marquette, 38-22, in the game. Tom Carey had three saves for the Buckeyes and Marquette's Jimmy Danaher had 12 stops.

The Buckeyes won 19-of-23 faceoffs on the day. May was 18-3 and sophomore Jake Withers was 1-1. May had 15 groundballs, one shy of the Ohio State record 16 set by Bob Myers in 1988. His 18 faceoff wins tie for the most won by a Buckeye in a single game since 2002, now set six times since that season. He has won 81-of-108 (.750) faceoffs this season and picked up 60 groundballs (10 per game). Ohio State had the edge in groundballs vs. Marquette, 31-14.

Ohio State converted 2-of-5 man-up chances and Marquette was 0-for-1.

He is seventh in program history with 156 points and ninth with 64 assists. Brown had his eighth career three-goal game and his fourth multiple-point game of the season. He is second on the team in points (17) and assists (9). Hunter is second on the squad with nine goals and has three multiple-goal games on the year. TAMPA, Fla. - - Junior Sara LeBrun scored a single game program record eight goals but it wasn't enough as Tampa stormed back late in the game to take a 17-16 nonconference contest on Friday afternoon to wrap up the Wildcats' trip to Florida.
The Wildcats (1-3) scored four of the final five goals to end the first half and go into the break leading 11-8, but the Spartans (3-3) scored four of the final five goals in regulation, including the game-winner with 1:23 to play for the one-goal victory.
LeBrun led the attack with her program record eight goals, ripping the twine eight times out of her 10 shots. She bested the record set in 2011 by Danielle Niccoli when she scored seven at Post.
Trailing 5-3, the Wildcats scored three straight to grab the 6-5 lead with 7:51 to play in the first half. Tied at 7-7, LeBrun scored back-to-back goals before LeBrun and La'Dae Boykin added the two final goals of the half to lead 11-8.
Maddie Hewitt tallied the first goal of the second half to make it three straight and the 12-8 lead. But the Spartans scored five of the next six goals, including three straight to tie the game at 13-13 with 11:40 to play.
LeBrun answered right back with back-to-back goals in a matter of 22 seconds to give the Wildcats the lead once more with 9:23 to play. Tampa scored to climb to within a single goal with 8:06 to play before the teams met a stalemate for the next four minutes.
Tampa struck again with 3:52 to play to tie the game at 15-15 before Shannon Sweeney gave the home team the lead on a free position shot with 3:35 to play. Lebrun answered back again with her eighth goal to tie the game with 1:52 to play, but Sweeney retaliated 29 seconds later with the game-winner.
Katie Spence won the ensuing draw control but Spartan goalkeeper Wylie Cassidy stopped a free position shot by Hewitt with 1:05 to play and stopped another shot by LeBrun with 30 seconds to play to secure the victory for the home team.
The Wildcats outshot the Spartans 36-27 but Cassidy made 15 saves to keep the Spartans in the contest. The Wildcats also held the advantage in ground balls, 19-13, draw controls, 24-11, and took eight more free position shots, 13, to Tampa's five.
Rebekah McCurry added three goals and three assists for the Wildcats while Spence scored two goals and two assists as well. McCurry also set a single game record with 13 draw controls, knocking Niccoli off the top spot again as she secured 11 draws in 2008 at Dominican.

No. 4 Notre Dame Tops No. 7 Virginia, 11-9, In ACC Opener
Fighting Irish score first seven goals of the game en route to the victory.
[/URL][/URL][/URL][/URL]
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The No. 4 University of Notre Dame men's lacrosse team scored the first seven goals of the game and withstood a second-half surge from No. 7 Virginia to open Atlantic Coast Conference play with an 11-9 victory on Saturday afternoon at Klockner Stadium.

Freshman attackman Mikey Wynne paced the Fighting Irish offense with five goals, while Conor Doyle chipped in three scores. Sophomore goalie Shane Doss made 10 stops for the Fighting Irish (4-1, 1-0).

Matt Kavanagh scored Notre Dame's first two goals and Wynne added another to make it 3-0 just over seven minutes into the contest. Tallies from Doyle and Wynne gave the Fighting Irish a 5-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Doss made some key first-quarter saves and he along with the rest of the Notre Dame defense kept the Cavaliers off the scoreboard for the opening 22:26 of the contest.

Goals from Sergio Perkovic and Wynne less than a minute apart early in the second period upped the Irish advantage to seven. Virginia finally cracked the scoring column with 7:34 left in the first half on a goal from Greg Coholan, who had four tallies in the game.

Notre Dame regained its seven-goal lead in the final minute of the opening half when the Irish forced a failed clear and Perkovic fed Wynne for the score. A man-up goal from Virginia's Ryan Tucker with 12 seconds left on the clock made it 8-2 in favor of Notre Dame at halftime.

"When the game ends as a two-goal spread, obviously it was pretty big to get off to a good start," Notre Dame head coach Kevin Corrigan said. "We played really well and we finished the ball really well. In the second half the combination of not winning faceoffs, not having the ball and a couple failures to clear and the next thing you know it's a ball game. We just need to tighten up a lot of different areas that we can get better at."

The Fighting Irish were the first to score in the second half as Doyle found the back of the net, but Virginia answered with a 4-0 run. The Cavaliers trimmed the Notre Dame lead to five (9-4) by the end of the third quarter with goals from Tucker and Owen Van Arsdale.

The Virginia spurt continued into the fourth quarter as Coholan netted consecutive goals to make it 9-6 with 12:18 left to play. Doyle halted the Cavalier surge 37 seconds later with his third tally of the afternoon and Notre Dame pushed the lead back to five (11-6) with just under six minutes remaining on another goal from Wynne, who has a team-high 15 goals this season.

Virginia (5-2, 0-2) did not go away as scores from Ryan Lukacovic, Coholan and Tucker made it 11-9 with 3:02 left, yet that is as close as the Cavaliers would get. The Cavaliers held a 37-29 edge in shots and they also won 13 of 24 faceoff attempts. Matt Barrett finished with nine saves for Virginia.

"Every game from here on out is going to be against a really good team and they are going to be games you have to fight your way through," Corrigan said. "We'll celebrate every one we win and we'll get back to work after every one we lose because the only thing that matters is the next one."

The Fighting Irish return to the field next Saturday when they play host to Ohio State. The game is slated for 4 p.m. (ET) at Arlotta Stadium and it will be broadcast on ESPNU.

"I'm super proud of the way my team played today," said head coach Cathy Reese, who earned her 200th career win with Saturday's victory. "We came out a little hesitant, and we weren't doing the things we normally do. We kind of settled in, and we were really able to control what we wanted to. I was just super proud."
