Jones Leads Duke Past Georgetown in Fourth Quarter

March 14, 2015

WASHINGTON D.C.- Duke junior midfielder Myles Jones registered three goals and five assists to lead fourth-ranked Duke to a 15-13 victory over Georgetown on Multi-Sport Field Saturday afternoon. The Blue Devils outscored the Hoyas 6-3 in the final quarter to come away with the win.

Duke (7-1) trailed Georgetown (4-3) heading into the fourth quarter before Jones took over. The native of Huntington, N.Y., put up three goals and two assists in the final period. Jack Bruckner threw in career-high matching four goals for the Blue Devils, while Jack Rowe went 18-of-26 at the faceoff X with 13 ground balls.

"Georgetown really pops on film," said head coach John Danowski. "They're very impressive, they're well coached. They had great spacing on offense and they play fast. We knew it was going to be a 60-minute battle. We're a good team, we're not great by any stretch and we knew this would be two good teams playing on a Saturday afternoon."

The first half was a tight affair that featured two ties and a two lead changes. The Blue Devils opened the scoring just 57 seconds into the game before Georgetown scored three unanswered for the 3-1 edge late in the fourth quarter.

Duke closed the half with two goals in 16 seconds to even the score 3-3 at the quarter break. Three different Blue Devils tallied goals in the opening quarter. The second quarter started the way the first finished for the Blue Devils as Jack Rowe took the opening faceoff and found Bruckner on the doorstep for the 4-3 lead.
Goals were hard to come by in the second quarter as Georgetown and Duke traded a goal apiece in the final eight minutes with the Blue Devils taking a 5-4 lead into the break.

Duke grabbed its first two-goal lead of the afternoon with a man-up score to start the third quarter, but the Hoyas refused to go away. They quickly rattled off three unanswered in 1:18 to take a 7-6 lead and jumpstart a wild stanza that ended with 10 goals and the Hoyas leading 10-9.

Trailing heading into the fourth quarter for the first time this season, Duke seemingly erased any hopes the Hoyas had of upsetting the Blue Devils. Rowe won the opening faceoff and raced right down the alley for his second tally in as many games. Jones, 59 seconds later, bounced one in and then found Tanner Scott on man-up for the 12-10 lead with 11:22 to play in the game. Less than a minute later Jones gave Duke its largest lead of the game off a pass from Kyle Keenan.

"I thought offensively we were a little timid," Danowski said. "I thought offensively we were a little careless with the ball, which led to some run-outs by them. They did a great job of keeping our offensive middies on the field so you have to give Georgetown a world of credit. Sixty minutes you just have to keep playing and that's one of the things our guys are learning."

Georgetown rallied to make it a one-goal game 13-12 with 4:48 to play, but Duke responded with a pair 40 seconds apart to ice the victory.

Will Haus picked up a season-high six ground balls to lead Duke's play on the faceoff wing. Duke won 21-of-29 draws overall with three of Georgetown's eight wins coming on violations. Haus also added a goal to his stat line.

"The faceoff game is something we work really hard at," Danowski said. "We spend three or four days a week on the team aspect of it. Wing play, clearing, riding and man-down faceoffs, we work on every aspect of the team faceoffs."

The Blue Devils man-up offense went 3-of-3 with three extra-man goals from three different players. Overall, nine different Duke players netted a goal in the win, including senior captain Justin George in his first career start.

In goal, Luke Aaron made 10 saves, including eight in the first half. Nick Marrocco came away with 11 stops for the Hoyas in 60 minutes of action.

Duke opens ACC play next weekend at No. 1 Syracuse. Faceoff is set for March 22 at 12:30 p.m.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - On Senior Day in Ohio Stadium, the Ohio State men's lacrosse team defeated No. 3-ranked Denver, 13-11, to stay undefeated at home (5-0). Ohio State trailed 11-9 early in the fourth quarter but scored the game's final four goals, while shutting out the Pioneers for the last 14:53, en route to the win. The Buckeyes improve to 6-2 overall (0-0 B1G) and Denver is now 4-2 (0-0 Big East).

The game was tied eight times and each team held the lead four times until the Buckeyes went ahead for good at 10:46 of the fourth quarter. Ohio State led 3-2 at the end of the first quarter and the teams were tied at seven at halftime. The Buckeyes tied the game at nine with 6:21 left in the third quarter but DU tallied at 2:26 and then scored seven seconds into the fourth for a two-goal lead (11-9). Ohio State's Tyler Pfister and Colin Chell scored 1:47 apart to tie the game at 11 with 12:12 left in regulation and Jesse King then put Ohio State on top at 10:46, followed by a goal from Carter Brown at 8:15.

"It was a special day in Ohio Stadium," Nick Myers, Ohio State head coach, said. "We had the opportunity to recognize 12 seniors and the impact they have had on this lacrosse family over their four years. To deliver a big win at home on Senior Day is rewarding for all the hard work this group has invested. Our team will need to shift gears quickly and focus on a very talented Towson team we face on the road Tuesday night. We look forward to getting back to work with this group and trying to build off today's effort."

Against Denver, Buckeye redshirt sophomore Pfister had a team-best three goals and four points, while King had two goals and two assists for four points, including the gamewinning goal. Brown had three points with two goals and an assist and senior David Planning had three points on a goal and two helpers. Freshman Chell scored twice in the win and senior Reegan Comeault had a goal and the gamewinning assist. Ohio State redshirt sophomore goalie Tom Carey made 11 saves in the cage.

Before the game, the members of the Buckeye senior class were honored: Ryan Borcherding, Comeault, Kevin Duffy, Turner Evans, Ben Karr, King, Rick Lewis, Spencer Matches, Christopher May, Mulchrone, Planning and Cameron Stephens

Ohio State led 3-2 after the first quarter. Sophomore John Kelly set up Planning for a goal at 12:49 but the Pioneers responded with the next two goals, at 11:17 and 8:53, to take a 2-1 lead. The Buckeyes answered, with King tying the game at two at 7:16 and Pfister setting up Brown for a goal at 3:33 to put Ohio State back in the lead. Denver outshot the Buckeyes, 11-6, in the quarter and Carey made four saves for the Buckeyes.

Denver scored the first three goals of the second quarter, all in the first 4:06, to tie the game and take a 5-3 lead. Connor Cannizzaro tallied at 13:20 and Wesley Berg scored back-to-back at 12:13 and 10:54. The teams then traded goals in 16 seconds, with Planning setting up senior Turner Evans for a goal at 9:16 and Denver's Erik Adamson tallying off an assist from Trevor Baptiste after a DU faceoff win at 9:10, making the score 6-4. Ohio State went on a three-goal run to take the lead for the third time. Pfister scored unassisted at 6:09, sophomore JT Blubaugh tied the game at six at 5:19 and Brown set up Chell at 4:50, putting Ohio State on top, 7-6. Just five seconds later, Baptiste won the faceoff and scored for DU, tying the game at seven. Shots were 11-9 in favor of the Pioneers in the quarter.

Pfister scored unassisted 43 seconds into the third quarter to put Ohio State ahead 8-7, but the Pioneers' Adamson tallied at 11:19 and 6:57 for a 9-8 DU lead. King set up Comeault at 6:21 after a failed Pioneer clear to tie the game at nine. The Pioneers' Zach Miller had the final goal of the quarter, putting Denver ahead 10-9 at 2:26. Denver again had 11 shots, with Ohio State attempting five.

Denver's Baptiste scored just seven seconds into the fourth quarter for Denver's first two-goal lead since the second quarter (11-9). Less than a minute later, Planning set up Pfister for a goal to draw Ohio State within one (11-10) at 13:59. At 12:12, King found Chell and he came around the net and scored, deadlocking the score for the eighth time (11-11). At 10:46, Comeault found King and he scored for Ohio state's first lead since early in the third quarter. The final goal came from Brown at 8:15, Ohio State's first two-goal advantage. Shots were 8-5 in favor of Ohio State in the quarter. Carey made two saves in the stanza.

The Buckeyes were outshot, 38-28, in the game. Carey had 11 saves and Denver's LaPlante made seven stops.

Denver had the advantage in faceoffs (19-9) and groundballs (29-23). Buckeye freshman Brendan Barger led Ohio State with five groundballs, while Mulchrone, who caused two turnovers, and Carey each had three.

Ohio State was unable to score on two man-up chances and Denver was 0-for-1. Ohio State has not allowed a man-up goal in eight opponent attempts this season.

The game vs. Denver opened a stretch of three games in a week for the Buckeyes. The squad will play at Towson at 7 p.m. Tuesday before taking on Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind., at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

The win was the Buckeyes' first over a team ranked in the Top 3 of the USILA poll since defeating Denver, 11-10, in the 2013 ECAC Tournament championship game May 4, 2013.

King, the Buckeyes' leading scorer with 21 goals, 12 assists and 33 points, extended his point streak to 44 games (90g, 63a, 153p in the stretch) with his fourth consecutive four-point day. Brown had his fourth multiple goal day of the year and is second on the team with 12 tallies and 22 points. Planning has a point in each of his last nine games and has 17 points on the year, with eight goals and nine assists. Chell had his fourth two-goal game as a Buckeye and has eight goals this season. Pfister's three goals and four points were a career high and marked his first points of the season.

#18 Brown's Second Half Surge Overwhelms #10 Harvard, 14-9

Providence, R.I. - Trailing by a goal at halftime, 18th-ranked Brown outscored #10 Harvard by a 9-3 margin in the second half to surge to a 14-9 win over the Crimson in the Ivy League opener for both teams at soggy Stevenson Field.

Brown remains unbeaten with the win, extending its record to 5-0 overall, 1-0 in the Ivy League, while Harvard falls to 4-2 overall, 0-1 in Ivy play.

Brown sophomore attackman Dylan Molloy (Setauket, NY), the nation's leading scorer, paced the Bears with three goals and two assists, while juniors Brendan Caputo (Westbury, NY), Kylor Bellistri (Potomac, MD) and Matt Graham (Amityville, NY) added two goals each.

The difference in the game was the play of Bears' sophomore long stick Larken Kemp (Greenwich, CT), who wrecked havoc with the Harvard attack. Kemp caused eight turnovers, pickled up four ground balls and scored a fourth-quarter goal to put the icing on the cake.

Bears' junior goalie Jack Kelly (West Islip, NY) struggled in the first half, but responded with six second half saves, nine saves overall, including a key stop with Brown down two men and Harvard trailing 10-8 with five minutes to play.

Brown out-shot the Crimson by a 53-31 margin, and held a 48-26 margin in ground balls.

Junior face-off specialist Will Gural (Haverford, PA) also stepped up his game in the second half. Gural captured 16-of-25 face-offs overall, including 8-of-9 in the fourth quarter.

The Crimson was led by freshman Joe Lang, who netted three goals and earned two assists, while junior Deke Burns scored two goals. Harvard goalie Bryan Moore made 17 saves.

Harvard led, 6-4, on an unassisted goal by Lang with 3:10 left in the second quarter. A late goal by Brown's Bellistri cut the Crimson lead to 6-5 at the half.

Graham scored for the Bears early in the third quarter to tie the game, 6-6, but Ian Ardrey scored an unassisted goal for the Crimson to go back up, 7-6, at the 8:45 mark of the third quarter.

Blynn ignited a 4-0 Brown spurt to take control of the game, tying the game, 7-7, one minute later. Molloy scored on a pass from senior Nick Piroli (Black River, NY) to give Brown the lead for good, 8-7.

Neither team led by more than two goals until Bears long stick freshman Jake Miller gave Brown a 10-7 lead with 13:42 remaining in the game.

A goal by Harvard's Sean Coleman drew the Crimson to within two goals of the Bears, at the 7:06 mark of the fourth quarter.

With the Bears down two men, Caputo split two defenders in the attacking zone and beat Harvard's Moore with 4:11 left to play to give the Bears control of the game once again, 11-8. Kemp and Molloy scored to lift the Bears to a 13-8 lead with just 2:11 left on the clock.

Brown is back in action again on Tuesday, March 17, hosting Bucknell at Stevenson, starting at 4 pm.

Two Hoyas Runs Make Difference As Georgetown Bests Men's Lax

BALTIMORE -- Georgetown University used a 5-1 run during the first and second quarters and a 5-0 stretch during the second half to propel itself past Loyola University Maryland, 13-12, Wednesday night at Ridley Athletic Complex in non-conference action.

The Greyhounds (4-4 overall) took a 5-2 lead when Brian Begley picked up a ground ball off a Graham Savio faceoff win, raced into the box and scored his first career goal with 8:19 left in the first quarter. Begley's tally came just 10 seconds after Romar Dennis scored his first of the game with a split dodge and shot.

Georgetown (5-3), however, slowed the pace of the first quarter that saw seven total goals in less than seven minutes, and Bo Stafford tallied his third of the game with 15.7 seconds left in the stanza.

Gabriel Mendola won the ensuing faceoff for the Hoyas, and Reilly O'Connor fed Mendola crashing to the crease with less than two seconds left, and his goal pulled Georgetown within one, 5-4, entering the second quarter.

Craig Berge then had a step-down shot from the top with 11:39 left in the second quarter, tying the game at 5-5, but Tyler Albrecht answered for Loyola, scoring off a Brian Sherlock assist just 28 ticks later to put Loyola back in front.

The Hoyas, however, got goals by Berge and Stafford at 5:41 and 4:28 in the second, and they led 7-6 after Stafford's game-high fourth.

Zach Herreweyers and Nikko Pontrello played a two-man game at the top right later in the quarter to set up a Greyhounds score. Herreweyers set a screen for Pontrello who then reversed the ball right-to-left to Herreweyers who scored his first of the game at 2:02, sending the teams to halftime knotted at 7-7.

Loyola came out scoring in the second quarter as Dennis scored on an uncharastic slow shot after his stick was checked during his swing, but his attempt bounced in to give Loyola the lead at 12:34.

Sherlock scored his second at 8:45 off another Pontrello assist, and Loyola was up two, 9-7.

Georgetown, however, got a goal with 120 seconds left as Ryan Hursey used a Stafford feed, and then Eduardo White tallied his first of two second-half scores with just under a minute left, and the fourth quarter started with another tie score, 9-9.

Devon Lewis nosed Georgetown ahead with a goal 3:15 into the fourth, and Joe Bucci tallied back-to-back goals at 10:45 and 8:26, giving the Hoyas a 12-9 pad.

Albrecht scored on a one-timer off a Zack Sirico feed form behind at 5:33, and Herreweyers used a Sherlock assist 27 ticks of the clock later, closing the gap to one.

White, however, dropped his hands after catching an O'Connor pass to score from 9 yards in front of the goal, putting Georgetown ahead by two with 3:40 remaining in regulation.

Dennis matched his career-high (three) with a rocket off Pontrello's career-high tying fourth assist with 52.9 on the fourth-quarter clock, giving the Greyhounds life.

Savio won the faceoff to Sherlock, but a Pontrello shot went wide right, and the Hoyas backed up the shot to win possession back. Georgetown, however, could not clear the ball, but Loyola did not get the ball into its offensive zone, either, and the Hoyas held on for a 13-12 victory.

Sherlock matched his career-high with five points, scoring twice and dishing out a career-best three assists. Dennis and Albrecht each scored three times, and Herrweyers added a pair. Begley had two points with a goal and an assist, and Mike Perkins tallied his first goal of the season early in the first quarter.

Stafford led all players with four goals and six points, while Berge, Bucci and White each scored twice for the Hoyas, and O'Connor had four assists.

Loyola returns to Patriot League play on Saturday, March 21, with a 4:30 p.m. game at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania.

Buckeyes are back in action Saturday at No. 18 Notre Dame (Noon ET, ESPN3)

COLUMBUS, Ohio - No. 9/15 Ohio State picked up a 13-8 road win at Cincinnati this afternoon, improving their record to 8-1 on the season while Cincinnati falls to 2-7.

Senior Mary Kate Facchina led Ohio State with four points on three goals and one assist and senior Kelsea Ayers added three goals of her own.

Ohio State took control of the game late in the first half. With the score tied 3-3 more than 13 minutes in, Facchina found Ayers for a goal that would spark a 7-0 run as Ohio State led 10-4 at halftime. Facchina would score two goals - the second and the last - in the decisive run.

Ayers opened the second half with her third goal to push the lead to 11-4, but UC would score three of the next four to cut the OSU lead to five at 11-6 with 22:45 left. But behind the defensive play of senior Tori DeScenza (11 saves) in goal and starting defenders Taylor Donahue, Emily Valli and Bridget Vilbig, Ohio State held UC to just four second-half goals as the Bearcats tried to mount a second-half run.

Junior Rainey Hodgson finished the game with two goals and one assist and senior Jackie Cifarelli also added two goals of her own. Also scoring for the Buckeyes were Jennifer Porretto, Hallie Keselman and Lauren Sherry - the first goal of her collegiate career late in the first half.

Cincinnati was led on attach by Sarah Del Bene and Dani Tunnell with two goals each. Meg Gulmi made 14 saves in goal.

Ohio State outshot UC 30-24 overall and went a perfect 13 of 13 on clear attempts.

The Buckeyes are back in action Saturday at No. 18 Notre Dame (Noon ET, ESPN3.com). A win would tie the best start in school history when Ohio State started 9-1 in 2009.

Bellistri and Blynn Score Four Goals Each, #12 Brown Tops Manhattan, 22-9

Providence, R.I. - Junior attackmen Kylor Bellistri (Potomac, MD) and Henry Blynn (Villanova, PA) netted four goals each to help #12 Brown cruise to a 22-9 non-league win over Manhattan Saturday afternoon at Stevenson. Brown improves to 6-1 with the win, while Manhattan falls to 0-9 for the season.

"I'm happy with the energy we played with today," said Brown head coach Lars Tiffany. "It was a good day for our offense to continue to grow and learn our new system of quick strike. I'm especially happy with the play of Bellistri and Blynn."

Bellistri added two assists to go with his four goals, while Blynn had one assist. Sophomore attackman Dylan Molloy (Setauket, NY), the nation's leading scorer, was double and triple-teamed all day, but still managed to score two goals and hand out three assists. Junior middy Brendan Caputo (Westbury, NY) and freshman Owen Rogers (Babylon, NY) also scored two goals each for the Bears.

Junior attackman Bailey Tills (Denver, CO) handed out a game high four assists, while senior attackman Nick Piroli (Black River, NY) had three assists for the Bears.

Brown also excelled in the face-off x, winning 23-of-34 face-offs. Junior Will Gutral (Haverford, PA) led the way by capturing 7-of-9 face-offs, while freshman Ted Ottens (Wilton, CT) was 11-of-15 in the face-off x. Junior goalie Jack Kelly (West Islip, NY) made six saves in 30 minutes of play, allowing just two goals.

The Bears out-shot the Jaspers by a 56-28 margin, and held a 54-24 advantage in ground balls.

Manhattan was paced Andrew Gresham, who netted four goals and handed out an assist. Marcel Godino added two goals for the Jaspers.

After falling behind, 1-0, on a goal by Manhattan's Marcel Godino, Brown reeled off seven straight goals to grab a 7-1 lead early in the second quarter on a goal by Caputo. Bellistri and Blynn had two goals each in the run.

The Bears continued their offensive onslaught and built an 11-2 lead at the half on a Molloy goal with 46 seconds left in the second quarter.

Brown scored the first two goals of the second half, one by Blynn and the other by Rogers, to take a 13-2 lead. The Jaspers answered with two goals by Gresham to cut Brown's lead to 13-4.

Five straight Brown goals, the last by sophomore Brewster Warble (Bronxville, NY), gave the Bears an 18-4 advantage, their biggest lead of the game.

Brown completes its four-game home stand on Tuesday, March 24, hosting Marist in an evening non-league contest. All the action starts at 7pm at Stevenson Field.

WLAX: No. 9/15 Ohio State Falls at No. 18/19 Notre Dame, 13-5
Buckeyes are back in action next Friday at home vs. Michigan

COLUMBUS, Ohio - No. 9/15 Ohio State dropped a road contest at No. 18/19 Notre Dame this afternoon, 13-5, at Arlotta Stadium in South Bend, Ind. The loss snaps a four-game win streak and drops the Buckeyes to 8-2 overall. UND improves to 5-4.

With the score tied at 3-2 at the half, the Irish used a 6-0 run to open the second half and take a 9-2 lead with 17:15 left. The Buckeyes were held scoreless in the second half until the 8:57 mark when Mary Kate Facchina found the back of the net off a Katie Chase assist to make it 9-3. The Buckeyes kept battling, however, as Molly Wood would add an unassisted goal a few minutes later to make it 10-4 with 6:18 left. But the deficit proved too much to overcome as UND answered with three straight goals to push the lead to 13-4 and turn away any chance at an Ohio State comeback.

Ohio State goalie Tori DeScenza had a fine day in goal overall with a season-high 12 saves. She made nine of those in the first half to keep the Buckeyes within striking distance at the half.

Jackie Cifarelli led Ohio State with two goals, one to tie the game early on at 1-1 and a second with under a minute remaining. Rainey Hodgson, Facchina and Molly Wood each added one goal. Chase and Jennifer Porretto had one assist each while Chase led the Buckeyes with five draw controls.

Notre Dame was in control for much of the game, outshooting the Buckeyes 36-17 while forcing 25 Ohio State turnovers.

The Irish were led by Cortney Fortunato's four goals and one assist. Rachel Sexton had three goals for ND.

Ohio State will look to rebound at 5 p.m. next Friday vs. Michigan at home in the inaugural Big Ten conference game in program history.

"Give credit to James Madison, they're a team that doesn't quit and never gives up," said head coach Cathy Reese. "I thought we did a great job in the first half. We went out and did what we needed to do, and I was really proud of the team at halftime. I think we let up a bit in intensity and execution in the second half, and that's something we'll need to work on."

Megan Whittle tallied her fifth hat trick of the season, and Taylor Cummings, Kelly McPartland and Brooke Griffin each scored twice. Erin Collins also added a goal.

The Dukes were able to score first on a free-position attempt at 26:52, but Cummings tied the game at 25:41. Cummings was able to score again less than a minute later as she cut across the crease. Megan Douty found an open Whittle as the freshman wrapped around the crease at 18:52, and the Terps took a 3-1 lead.

James Madison added a goal just 30 seconds later, but the Terps were able to close the half on a 5-0 run. Stukenberg and McPartland each scored twice and Griffin added a goal as Maryland took an 8-2 lead into halftime.

McPartland scored 10 seconds into the second off an assist from Cummings. Whittle tallied another goal on a sharp shot at 28:09 as Maryland took a 10-2 lead. After another Dukes free-position goal, Collings, Stukenberg and Whittle rattled off goals, and the Terps led by 10.

James Madison was able to recover the momentum, and went on a five-goal scoring streak. Griffin managed to stop the scoring onslaught on an 8-meter goal at 8:51. The Dukes added two more goals as they attempted to comeback, but the Terps held on and took a 14-10 victory to remain unbeaten on the season.

Alice Mercer and Douty led the Terrapin defense as Mercer caused four turnovers and Douty picked up three ground balls. Cummings finished the game with 11 draw controls, which tied a season high.

The Terps open Big Ten Conference play next Thursday at No. 6 Northwestern (4-2). The Maryland-Wildcats game will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network.

WLAX: No. 14/18 Buckeyes take down Michigan in Big Ten opener, 13-5
DeScenza records 11 saves in goal to lead the Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The No. 14/18 Ohio State women's lacrosse team was in control from start to finish in a 13-5 victory vs. Michigan Friday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in the Big Ten opener for both teams.

The win improves Ohio State to 9-2 overall and 1-0 in the conference while Michigan drops to 5-5 and 0-1.

"It's really exciting to get our first Big Ten win," head coach Alexis Venechanos said. "I was very proud of the way our student-athletes competed for 60 minutes. We shared the ball really well on attack and I thought defensively we were very focused and tuned into the game plan. Tori (DeScenza) saw the ball really well tonight and ignited some of our breaks offensively. So overall, just a really good team effort."

DeScenza was outstanding in goal for the Buckeyes, recording 11 saves - her sixth game this season with double-digit saves - while allowing just two first half goals. Katie Chase led the charge offensively with four goals and recording a game-high six draw controls.

Michigan would get on the board first with a goal by Madeline Dion less than 2 minutes into the game. But it was all Buckeyes from that point on as Ohio State scored nine of the next 10 goals to lead 9-2 at the break. The Buckeyes won 9 of 11 draw controls in the first half and outshot the Wolverines 17-10 in the opening 30 minutes.

Neither team scored for the first 8 minutes of the second half until consecutive goals by Jennifer Porretto and Molly Wood at 21:56 and 18:45 capped a 7-0 run to put the Buckeyes up 11-2 and essentially put the game away.

Porretto finished the game with three goals and two assists while Mary Kate Facchina also finished with three goals. Jackie Cifarelli recorded one goal and three assists and Rainey Hodgson dished out a game-high four assists. Cian Dabrowski also notched a goal for the Buckeyes.

Defensively, Ohio State caused 14 UM turnovers, three coming from Taylor Donahue.

Michigan was led by Kim Coughlan's two goals.

Ohio State is back in action at Noon Sunday vs. Hofstra at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

SUBJECT: Early Runs in Each Half Lead Molloy Past Wilmington Women's Lacrosse
DATE: March 27, 2015
djl
ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. - - Molloy jumped out to a 7-0 lead before the Wilmington University women's lacrosse team got on the board, leading to a 16-9 nonconference victory for Molloy on Friday night at the Dean G. Skelos Sports Complex.
The Wildcats (2-6 overall) matched the Golden Lions (4-4 overall) in everything but the scoreboard, grabbing more ground balls (16-13), taking more free position shots (7-2), and turning the ball over less (17-19), but could only convert on nine of 30 shot opportunities for the contest.
Trailing 8-1 halfway through the first half, the Wildcats went on a 4-2 spurt at the end of the half, getting two goals from Rebekah McCurry, and single goals from Sara LeBrun and Megan Keffer. Keffer's mark came with two seconds left in the first half, bringing the Wildcats to within five at 10-5.
But the Golden Lions started hot again in the second half, scoring the first five goals of the frame to extend the lead out to 15-5 with 15:30 to play. LeBrun started a string of three straight goals for the Wildcats while McCurry tallied back-to-back goals to pull to within 15-8, but with only 2:57 to play.
The teams traded goals in the final two minutes of play, as Gabby Spalt got on the board with a goal with 1:12 remaining in the contest. Keffer had an opportunity to give the Wildcats double-digit with 34 seconds to play, but the Lions' netminder Laura Vetter made the stop to keep it at 16-9.
The Golden Lions narrowly outshot the Wildcats, 31-30, for the game while also gaining more draw controls, 15-11. Wilmington converted on 15-of-19 clear attempts but Vetter recorded 14 saves while Wilmington goalkeeper Corinne Dries made 12 stops for the game.
McCurry led the Wildcats with four goals and five draw controls while LeBrun added three goals. Keffer and Spalt capped the Wilmington scoring with a goal each while Keffer added two ground balls and two draws. Maddie Hewitt picked up three ground balls and added two draws.
The Wildcats have a shot to get back in the win column quickly on Saturday, as they head to Post on the quick turnaround. They return to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action at LaMoy field with a 1 p.m. start in Waterbury, Conn.

No. 2 Irish Down No. 1 Syracuse In Double-Overtime, 13-12
Jack Near scores game winner for the Fighting Irish.

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - In a game that lived up to the billing, the No. 2 University of Notre Dame men's lacrosse team topped No. 1 Syracuse in double-overtime, 13-12, on Saturday afternoon in front of 3,602 fans at a sunny Arlotta Stadium. Senior captain Jack Near netted the game winner for the Fighting Irish, who improved to 2-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.

It was the first time in program history that Notre Dame defeated a top-ranked opponent. The Irish had been 0-4 all-time against No. 1 teams.

Four different Fighting Irish players - Mikey Wynne, Sergio Perkovic, Nick Ossello and Near - all tallied two goals, while Matt Kavanagh registered one goal and a game-high three assists. Sophomore goalie Shane Doss, the reigning ACC and national (USILA) defensive player of the week, made 12 saves in the win.

Dylan Donahue had seven goals for Syracuse and Nicky Galasso contributed two goals and two assists.

"This was a great day. It was a beautiful day with a great crowd and one versus two, but we play a bunch of teams that could be ranked one or two," Notre Dame head coach Kevin Corrigan said. "We had a great week of preparation this week, probably our best week of preparation for a game we've had and we needed every bit of it."

Notre Dame (6-1, 2-0) led 5-3 at halftime and exploded with four straight second-half scores to claim a six-goal advantage, which was Syracuse's largest deficit of the season, by the 8:31 mark of the third quarter. Conor Doyle, Wynne, Kavanagh and Near all scored in that sequence for the Irish.

The Orange (7-1, 2-1) answered by scoring six of the game's next seven goals. A deposit from Galasso and two more from Donahue, including one in a five-on-five situation, made it 9-6 with just under four minutes left in the third period. Following a goal from Perkovic, Hakeem Lecky scored and Donahue produced two more goals to put the Orange back within one (10-9) with just over 10 minutes remaining in regulation.

Notre Dame's Jim Marlatt pushed the Irish advantage back to two (11-9) but Syracuse responded with its third 3-0 run of the half. The surge began on Donahue's sixth goal of the day and a man-up tally from Tim Barber knotted the game (11-11). Donahue gave the Orange its first lead of the afternoon (12-11) at the 1:06 mark of the fourth quarter when he scored with the shot clock on.

Notre Dame sophomore P.J. Finley won the ensuing faceoff and raced down the field and scored the first goal of his career to make it 12-12 with 59 seconds showing on the clock.

The Irish had the first possession of overtime, but could not score and Doss denied Donahue in the waning seconds to force a second overtime.

"He (Doss) gave up a couple (goals) early that were positioning goals and he's usually really good about not doing that," Corrigan stated. "But then he stole some, including that last one. (Donahue) gets rid of the ball so quickly that it's almost impossible for goalies to catch up to that ball. For him to make that save at the end was terrific."

Syracuse won the faceoff to start the second extra session and after an errant shot, Notre Dame defenseman Edwin Glazener had the back up that gave the Fighting Irish possession. Near, a short-stick defensive midfielder, worked his way around the goal on the other end of the field and buried the game winner, which was his fourth goal of the season.

"We had a huge stop and I'm not sure who got the possession for us on the endline, but it was a great hustle play," Near said. "We then got the ball up and out. I realized I had a shorty on me and that's a play we like. I shot it and I wasn't even sure if it went in or not."

Ossello won the game's opening faceoff and scored just 26 seconds in, but Galasso tied it less than a minute later. Wynne put the Irish back up 25 seconds later and Donahue's first tally of the game made it 2-2 midway through the first quarter. The Fighting Irish used goals from Will Corrigan, Perkovic and Ossello to claim a three-goal lead with 6:40 remaining in the first half. A goal from Syracuse's Kevin Rice made it 5-3 at the intermission.

Syracuse outshot Notre Dame 44-35 and the Orange also held an 18-11 advantage in faceoffs. Bobby Wardwell made 11 saves for Syracuse.

The Fighting Irish return to action next Saturday when they travel to No. 6 Duke. The ACC showdown is slated for 5 p.m. (ET) in Durham, N.C. and it will be broadcast on ESPNU.

Junior Halley Barnes leads Rutgers with a hat trick

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (March 28, 2015) - Rutgers women's lacrosse dropped its Big Ten Conference opener, 15-8, Saturday at High Point Solutions Stadium against No. 15/16 Penn State. RU made a push with three-straight goals to end the game, but fell short in the loss.

The Scarlet Knights (1-10, 0-1 Big Ten) welcomed back former players for Alumnae Day to usher in the Big Ten Conference era. RU also played its first-ever game on national television on Big Ten Network.

Junior attacker Halley Barnes (Garnet Valley, Pa.), who led Rutgers with a hat trick, scored the program's first Big Ten Conference goal in the opening minutes, giving the team an early 1-0 lead. Penn State (8-3, 1-0 Big Ten) fought back with five consecutive goals to establish a lead it would not relinquish.

Rutgers responded midway through the first half, scoring back-to-back goals to cut the lead to 8-4 with 4:40 left in the opening stanza. Redshirt senior midfielder Lauren Sbrilli (Martinsville, N.J.) and sophomore midfielder Kristina Dunphey (Hillsborough, N.J.) provided the scores.

Facing a 15-5 deficit late in the second half, the Scarlet Knights continued to attack, closing the game on a 3-0 run. Junior attacker Kim Koldony (Farmingdale, N.Y.) got the stretch going with an unassisted goal at the 4:41 mark. Sbrilli followed up a minute later with the 99th goal of her career, before Barnes completed her hat trick at 1:05 to cut the score to its final, 15-8.

Senior goalkeeper Candice Dandridge (Cherry Hill, N.J.) made 10 saves against the Nittany Lions - her sixth outing with double-digit stops. Redshirt senior defender Hollie DiMuro (West Babylon, N.Y.) led RU on the defensive end, causing a team-best three turnovers and collecting four ground balls.

Koldony and Sbrilli added assists to go with their two goals. Rookie midfielder Amanda Casten (Brick, N.J.) notched an assist in the game for the first points of her career. She has started the last seven games.

Penn Upsets #10 Brown, 14-11

Providence, R.I. - Penn needed a win to stay in the mix for the Ivy League Lacrosse Playoffs and came away with a 14-11 win over #10 Brown Saturday afternoon at windy Stevenson Field. The win lifted the Quakers to 4-6 overall, 1-3 in the Ivy League, while Brown had its first Ivy loss of the season, falling to 8-2 overall, 2-1 in Ivy play.

Sophomore attackman Dylan Molloy's (Setauket, NY) third goal of the game tied the score 10-10, with 9:07 remaining in the third quarter.

Penn held the high scoring Bears scoreless for the next 22 minutes, taking the lead for good, 11-10, on a goal by Brian Coleman with 5:12 left in the quarter, and capped a 4-0 run on Pat Berkery's goal with 3:36 left in the game to give Penn a 14-10 advantage.

Molloy, the nation's leading scorer, led all scorers with three goals and two assists. Bears' junior attackman Kylor Bellistri (Potomac, MD) netted three goals, while junior attackman Henry Blynn (Villanova, PA) added two goals.

Brown junior goalie Jack Kelly (West Islip, NY) made 15 saves, while Quakers goalie Jimmy Sestillo had 17 saves, including six in the fourth quarter.

The Quakers were paced by four players with two goals each - Nick Doktor, Reilly Hupfeldt, Kevin McGeary and Berkery.

The Bears out-shot the Quakers by a 51-47 margin, but lost the battle of the face-off x by a narrow 15-14 margin. Brown also turned the ball over 18 times to the Quakers' 13 turnovers.

Brown looked like it would have an easy time in the early going, opening up a 4-1 lead on goals by Molloy, junior Matt Graham (Amityville, NY), Blynn and Bellistri. The Quakers fought back with three consecutive goals to tie the game, 4-4, on a man-up tally by Hupfeldt.

The Bears went up by two goals, 8-6, on a goal by Blynn, but Penn answered with 32 seconds left in the opening half on a goal by McGeary to trail, 9-8, at intermission.

Brown's Ivy League schedule continues next Saturday, April 11 when the Bears travel to New Haven, Conn., to face #11Yale in battle of Ivy League heavyweights, starting at 1pm at Reese Stadium.

BALTIMORE -- Loyola University Maryland men's lacrosse coaches stressed the importance of playing fast and winning the "hustle plays" in Saturday's Patriot League game against the U.S. Naval Academy, and the Greyhounds came out ahead in many, beating the 18th-ranked Midshipmen, 17-7, at Ridley Athletic Complex.

The Greyhounds (6-5 overall, 4-2 Patriot League) used 6-0 runs in each half and held advantages over Navy (7-4, 5-2) in several statistical categories, picking up 37 ground balls to the Midshipmen's 22, and outshooting them, 51-31.

Loyola also went 15-of-28 on faceoffs to mark the first time this season that Navy has not won more restarts than its opponents. The Midshipmen entered the game ranked seventh in NCAA Division I with a 64.1 percent success rate on faceoffs, but Graham Savio led the Greyhounds' effort by winning 15-of-26.

Defensively, Loyola held the Midshipmen's top scorer Patrick Keena without a point, and they did the same to Kevin Wendel, Navy's top midfield scorer.

Zach Herreweyers and Brian Sherlock each scored three goals for Loyola, while Herreweyers added a career-best three assists and Sherlock had one. Romar Dennis tallied a career-best four points with two goals and two assists, all coming in the first half as Loyola went up, 10-3 at the break.

Navy scored the game's first goal as Jack Ray bulled his way to the crease to score one of his team-high two with the 30-second clock running, but his goal at 11:48 in the first goal was followed just 38 ticks later by Jay Drapeau wrapping the crease to get open topside for an opposite post goal.

The Midshipmen were penalized for a faceoff violation on the restart after Drapeau's goal, and Loyola went a man-up following Navy's third infraction in as many draws to start the game. Twenty seconds after Drapeau's goal, Dennis sent a pass to Sherlock on the high left side, and Sherlock scored his first of the game on a sidearm rip.

Loyola made its lead 3-1 with 8:11 left in the opening quarter after a clean save by Grant Limone led to an over-the-top clear to Zac Davliakos who ran into the offensive box and fed Herreweyers on the right side for Loyola's first of six transition goals.

Colin Flounlacker momentarily stopped the Greyhounds' 3-0 run, scoring for Navy at 6:03 after a spin dodge got him into space for a nine-yard goal at 6:03.

Nikko Pontrello, however, took a Zack Sirico high-to-low pass and scored with 3:37 left in the first, sparking a 6-0 run that would put Loyola up by seven late in the first half.

Pontrello scored twice around a Sherlock goal, and Herreweyers found Davliakos alone in front of the goal for another transition goal, and Sherlock scored again on the extra-man to put Loyola in front, 8-2, with 6:35 to go in the first half.

Dennis then was on the scoring end of Loyola's next goal, making a long north-south run on the right side and finishing with a lefty overhand shot at 5:41.

Gabe Voumard broke the 6-0 Loyola run with a man-up goal for Navy, dropping his hands to tally one from the top of the offense at 3:47, but a right-handed Dennis goal with 46.1 seconds left in the half made the halftime margin, 10-3.

Navy started the second half the same way it did the first, with Ray tallying a goal at 12:34 with the 30-second timer on, but that was its only score of the third quarter.

Pat Frazier made a one-man clearing run with just over nine minutes left in the stanza, and he played give-and-go with Herreweyers to score his second of the season at 9:02, the first score of another 6-0 Loyola run.

Herreweyers scored the final goal of that stretch 46 seconds into the fourth quarter to put Loyola up 12, 16-4, before Navy scored three-consecutive fourth-quarter goals. Matt Cunningham tallied Loyola's final goal of the game with 3:29 remaining off the first assist of Nick DeSisto's career.

The 17 goals allowed by Navy were the most it has yielded since 2003 when it gave up the same number to Johns Hopkins University.

Savio led Loyola in ground balls with five, while Jack Carrigan had four and was one of seven players to cause a turnover for the Greyhounds. Sherlock, Tyler Albrecht and Brian Begley each had three ground balls, while the latter two had a goal and a caused turnover, too.

Loyola plays its final non-conference game of the 2015 regular-season on Wednesday, April 8, when it takes on the University of Maryland at 7 p.m. in College Park, Maryland.

No. 1 Notre Dame Downs No. 7 Duke, 15-10
Irish use hat tricks from Doyle, Kavanagh, Ossello and Wynne to improve to 7-1 (3-0 ACC).

DURHAM, N.C. - A quartet of hat tricks propelled the top-ranked University of Notre Dame men's lacrosse team to a 15-10 win over No. 7 Duke on Saturday afternoon at Koskinen Stadium.

Conor Doyle, Matt Kavanagh, Nick Ossello and Mikey Wynne all netted three goals for the Fighting Irish, who captured their third win over a top-10 opponent this season. Doyle also had a career-best four assists, while Kavanagh had two. Sophomore goalie Shane Doss made a career-high 17 saves in the win.

The Irish victory snapped Duke's 21-game home winning streak, which was the longest active streak in the nation. The Blue Devils are 22-3 in their last 25 home games and Notre Dame has provided two of those losses.

"We had to make plays with how they were playing us and we were able to make those plays," Notre Dame head coach Kevin Corrigan said. "Shane Doss was absolutely terrific. Conor Doyle was also terrific. He did a great job of breaking them down."

The Fighting Irish (7-1, 3-0) led 4-1 at the end of the first quarter, which continued their season-long trend of jumping on opponents early. Notre Dame has outscored its competition 32-9 in the first quarter this season.

"It's important to play with a lead especially when you're not winning faceoffs early on," Corrigan added. "If you're down and not winning faceoffs that's a whole other level of pressure. When you're up and losing faceoffs it's not the same effect."

Kavanagh and Doyle netted the first two goals of the game before Duke cracked the scoring column on a Tanner Scott tally at the 9:25 mark of the opening period. The Irish answered with goals from Kavanagh and Doyle.

Duke's Jack Bruckner opened the second-quarter scoring, yet a 3-0 Fighting Irish run made it 7-2 with 6:50 left in the first half. Ossello, Wynne and Doyle tallied goals during that stretch. The Blue Devils trimmed the Irish lead back to three (7-4) on scores from Scott and Deemer Class, but Kavanagh found Eddy Lubowicki who scored with four seconds left in the stanza to make it 8-4 at the intermission. Doss made nine saves in the first half.

Wynne put the Irish up 9-4 just over two minutes into the second half, but Duke's Myles Jones responded to make it a four-goal affair with 11:11 left in the third quarter. The two teams continued to alternate scores as a Notre Dame goal from Jim Marlatt was followed by a Blue Devil deposit from Justin Guterding.

Another Duke goal from Bruckner cut Notre Dame's advantage to three (10-7) with just under six minutes left in the third period. The Fighting Irish used a Ben Pridemore goal to claim an 11-7 edge by the end of the third quarter.

Ossello and Kavanagh (man-up) scored 40 seconds apart to up Notre Dame's lead to six (13-7) in the early stages of the fourth quarter. Guterding and Ossello exchanged goals and the score stood at 14-8 with exactly 11 minutes left to play. Blue Devil goals from Scott and Kyle Keenan (man-up) cut the Irish lead to four (14-10) with 3:27 showing on the clock, but those would be the final scores of the day for Duke. Wynne's third goal produced the final outcome.

Notre Dame won the faceoff battle, 16-13. Fighting Irish sophomore P.J. Finley took every attempt. Duke outshot the Irish 46-34. Blue Devil goalie Danny Fowler finished with six saves. Both teams were 1-of-3 in man-advantage opportunities.

The Notre Dame defense limited Jones to just one goal and one assist. The Blue Devil midfielder entered the game with 26 goals and 23 assists this season.

The Fighting Irish are back in action Tuesday when they play host to No. 12 Marquette. Opening faceoff is slated for 4 p.m. (ET) at Arlotta Stadium. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3.

NEWARK, Del. - - Millersville scored six consecutive goals in the first half to take an early lead over of the Wilmington University women's lacrosse team on its way to a non-conference win, 14-6, on Saturday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.
The Wildcats (3-8) scored back-to-back goals late in the first half to cut the deficit down to four but the Marauders (4-6) scored with only four seconds left in the half to gain the momentum heading into the halftime break, 8-3. The Marauders would pull away in the second half and secure the win by scoring the first five goals of the second stanza as well.
The Marauders and the Wildcats exchanged goals to begin the contest but it was a goal by Taylor Davis with 20:58 left in regulation that would spark the Marauders to go into a 6-0 spurt that would set the pace for the remainder of the game and have the Wildcats playing from behind.
Rebekah McCurry would stop the run by the Marauders by scoring her 20th goal of the season with 5:12 left in regulation and would couple that with her 21st goal of the season with 4:40 left to help cut the Marauders lead down to four.
Coming out of the half, the Marauders would go on another run, scoring five unanswered goals being led by Hannah Vogel, who tallied three in a row with assists from Sabrina Fusco on the final mark.
The Wildcats would not go quietly however, as they would stop the streak by going on a run of their own with goals by Megan Keffer on an assist from Ashley Kroll at 16:50, La'Dae Boykin at 8:50, and Sara LeBrun with an assist from McCurry at 7:40. The late offensive efforts of the Wildcats were not able to overcome the deficit as they would fall to the Marauders 14-6.
McCurry led the Wildcats with two goals, four ground balls, three draws, and two caused turnovers. Lebrun, Boykin, Keffer, and Gabby Spalt would all score one goal in the loss. LeBrun tied McCurry with four ground balls as well while goalkeeper Corinne Dries led all with six on the afternoon.
The Wildcats earned more draws, 13-9, and had more shots, 36-32, and ground balls, 28-22, than the Marauders throughout the contest. Dries made 10 saves on 32 shots but Marauder net minder Shannon Davis had 14 saves on 36 shots for the Marauders, coming up big when needed most to keep Millersville on the run.
The Wildcats are on the road for their next two contests, going outside of the CACC once again with a game on April 7 at St. Thomas Aquinas. The opening draw is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

Subject: MEN'S LACROSSE FINAL: Penn 14, #10 Brown 11

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The University of Pennsylvania men's lacrosse team
entered its game at No. 10 Brown already 0-3 in the Ivy League, with three
to play. At halftime, the Quakers were trailing the Bears, 8-7.

With the season on the brink, the Quakers responded. They are alive and
still in the Ivy League Tournament conversation, thank, you, after
outscoring Brown 5-2 in the third quarter and then holding on in the
fourth to gain a 14-11 victory at Stevenson Field.

It was an entertaining first quarter, with each team scoring four times.
Brown opened thing up with a trio of goals before the game was five
minutes old as Dylan Molloy, Matt Graham and Henry Blynn all scored
unassisted efforts. Penn got one of the goals back as Kevin McGeary
finished a Nick Doktor feed, but Kylor Bellistri made it a three-goal
different just 24 seconds later.

Penn leveled things before the period ended as Chris Hupfeldt, Kevin Brown
and Reilly Hupfeldt all scored.

Brown again jumped out in front to start the second quarter, Molloy and
Tim Jacob making it 6-4. Penn tied it up again as Reilly Hupfeldt and
Doktor scored, but the Bears regained the two-goal advantage thanks to
Bellistri and Blynn scored. McGeary got one of those back with just 32
seconds left before halftime, off a feed from Doktor, to make it 8-7 as
the teams went to the locker rooms.

Penn needed just 30 seconds to make it 8-8 in the third, Doktor scoring
unassisted. Molloy gave Brown a 9-8 lead a little more than a minute
later, but then Penn scored twice in a span of 13 seconds to take its
first lead of the day. Chris Hilburn had the first goal, off a Joe
McCallion feed, and then freshman long-stick middie Connor Keating scored
off a Doktor feed to make it 10-9.

Brown made it 10-10 when Bellistri finished a Molloy feed, but Brown
(another man-up goal) and then McCallion scored before the period ended
and it was 12-10 after three. Just 35 seconds into the fourth, Pat Berkery
made it a three-goal margin with his first goal of the day.

Nearly 11 minutes would go by after that goal before another team scored,
and that team was Penn as Berkery netted his second off a nice feed from
Chris Hilburn. Brown got one of the goals back with just 2:03 left, Tim
Jacob ending a scoreless drought of 22:04, but that closed out the
scoring.

Doktor had a six-point game, with two goals and four assists, while
McCallion had four (1g, 3a). Berkery, McGeary, Brown and Reilly Hupfeldt
each scored twice. At the other end, Jimmy Sestilio went the distance in
goal and finished with 17 saves in a standout performance.

Penn is on the road again next Saturday, traveling to Harvard to face the
Crimson in an Ivy League game that will start at noon. That game will be
televised live nationally on FOX College Sports, as well as on the Ivy
League Digital Network.

WLAX: Hofstra Cruises Past William & Mary, 13-8
SHANNON SMITH POSTGAME INTERVIEW

Hempstead, NY - Sophomore attacker Morgan Knox added three goals and one assist to lead the Hofstra Women's Lacrosse team to a 13-8 victory over William & Mary on Sunday afternoon at James M. Shuart Stadium.

The win improves Hofstra's record to 7-4 overall and a perfect 2-0 in Colonial Athletic Association play. William & Mary falls to 5-7 and 1-1 in the league.

Senior defender Brittain Altomare continued her dominate season with eight draw controls, along with two goals and two assists.

William & Mary was led by Ellen Shaffrey, who tallied a game-high five goals.

Hofstra's defense was stellar in the opening half as the Pride held William & Mary to just one goal in the first 30 minutes as they scored five to take a four-goal lead into the break.

The Pride scored the first three goals of the contest as Altomare opened the scoring at the 21:32 mark off an assist from senior attacker Lindsey Alfano pushed the lead to 3-0 with less than 14 minutes left in the half.

Kaleigh Noon would get the Tribe on the board at the 10:39 mark before Knox continued her strong first half with another goal before Parrella ended the first half scoring with a tally off an assist from freshman midfielder Amanda Seekamp with 2:27 to play before intermission. Knox was the first half star for the Pride as she had two goals and an assist before halftime.

Hofstra would score two of the first three goals of the second stanza to open up a 7-2 advantage following a goal from Knox with 23:05 left in regulation.

A Shaffrey goal ended the run for the Tribe, but the Pride would push the lead to six goals, 9-3, at the 13:47 mark as Parrella found the net twice over an eight-plus minute span to put the game out of reach.

William & Mary would be unable to get the deficit under four goals the remainder of the contest as Hofstra got goals from freshman attacker Shelby Milne and Altomare in the final six-minutes of the game to capture their second consecutive victory.

Alfano added two goals for the Pride, while senior goalie Shea McAvoy had four ground balls and two caused turnovers for Hofstra.

The goal for Milne was her first career point.

Abby Corkum had a goal and three assists for William & Mary, which also got three caused turnovers and two ground balls from Abby Junior.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - In front of 2,004 fans in Ohio Stadium, the No. 14-ranked Ohio State men's lacrosse posted a 15-12 win over No. 19 Johns Hopkins Sunday night in the inaugural Big Ten Conference lacrosse game in Columbus. Ohio State is now 9-3 overall - a perfect 6-0 in Columbus - and 2-0 in B1G action.

In a matchup that was tied nine times, Ohio State broke the game open with a three-goal run late in the fourth quarter to pull away and secure the conference victory over the Blue Jays (4-6, 1-1 B1G). The teams were tied at three after the first quarter and deadlocked at six at halftime. Ohio State led 9-8 after the third quarter but the Blue Jays scored early in the fourth for a nine-all game. The teams traded goals at 11:40 and 10:13 for a 10-10 game, but the Buckeyes scored the next three goals (in a span of 2:33) to pull ahead 14-11 with 3:34 left.

Buckeye junior Carter Brown had six goals in the victory over the Blue Jays, while senior Jesse King had seven points with five goals and two assists. Redshirt sophomore goalie Tom Carey made 14 saves in the cage and graduate student Christopher May won 18 faceoffs and picked up a game high nine groundballs. Senior David Planning had two goals and two assists for a four-point night.

"Our men stepped up in a number of ways," Nick Myers, Ohio State head coach, said. "It was a back and forth game. I'm really proud of the way we fought for 60 minutes and ultimately came away with a big victory. Now we have to work to get better as we look for conference win number three next week."

Ohio State hits the road to take on Michigan at 2 p.m. Sunday in Ann Arbor in a game televised by ESPNU. The matchup is part of the Creator's Trophy competition between Ohio State, Penn State and Michigan. The Buckeyes enter the game 1-0 in Creator's Trophy play after a victory at Penn State last week.

The Buckeyes and Blue Jays were tied at three after the first quarter. Ryan Brown scored the game's first two goals at 12:51 and 10:21 for a 2-0 Hopkins lead. Ryan Hunter scored for the Buckeyes, assisted by King, at 9:08 and back-to-back unassisted goals for C. Brown at 9:08 and 7:40 put Ohio State ahead, 3-2. The Blue Jays' R. Brown completed his hat trick with three seconds left in the quarter for a tie game. Shots were 10-7 in favor of Johns Hopkins in the quarter and Carey had four saves for the Buckeyes.

In the second quarter, Ohio State and Johns Hopkins again scored three times each to head into halftime tied at six. Planning beat his defender and scored at 13:06 to break the tie and Ohio State held the one-goal lead until King scored at 5:41. R. Brown followed with back-to-back goals for the Blue Jays at 5:01 and 4:10 to deadlock the score at five. C. Brown finished his hat trick at 2:26 to put the Buckeyes back ahead but the Blue Jays again scored late, with a goal from Joel Tinney with 15 seconds left in the quarter for a six-all game. Each team attempted eight shots in the quarter and Carey again had four saves.

Ohio State outscored Johns Hopkins 3-2 in the third quarter to take a 9-8 lead after 45 minutes. The teams traded goals twice, with Ohio State responding each time. Shack Stanwick put Hopkins ahead for the first time since early in the first quarter (7-6) at 12:49 but King answered at 11:13. R. Brown put Hopkins up 8-7 at 9:31 before C. Brown tallied at 6:17 for an eight-all game and King scored at 3:54 to again put Ohio State in the lead (9-8). Ohio State outshot Johns Hopkins, 9-7, in the quarter and Carey had three saves. The Buckeyes were unable to convert three extra man chances in the quarter.

The teams combined for 10 goals in the fourth quarter. John Crawley scored a man-up goal for Johns Hopkins 17 seconds into the stanza, converting a chance that carried over from the third quarter, to tie the game at nine. King scored for the Buckeyes at 12:47 but R. Brown answered at 11:40 for a 10-10 game. The Browns traded goals, with C. Brown scoring for Ohio State at 10:13 and R. Brown tallying for Hopkins at 7:54, making the score 11-all.

Ohio State then went on a three-goal run for the first three-goal lead by either team in the game. Sophomore John Kelly tallied at 6:07 to put Ohio State ahead and King set up Planning at 5:06. At 3:34, King converted with less than 10 seconds left on the shot clock, giving the Buckeyes a 14-11 advantage. Connor Reed drew the Blue Jays within two (14-12) at 1:37, but Planning set up C. Brown for a goal with the Hopkins' goalie out of the cage in the final minute. Shots were 12-7 in favor of the Blue Jays in the quarter and Carey had three saves.

Johns Hopkins outshot Ohio State, 37-31, in the game. Carey played 59:22 and had a Buckeye career-high 14 saves, allowing 11 goals. Senior Cameron Stephens played 38 seconds after Carey had to come out because of a penalty and allowed one goal. JHU goalie Eric Schneider had five saves in all 60 minutes.

Ohio State had the slight edge in groundballs, 24-22. May took all but one faceoff for the Buckeyes, winning 18-of-29. He has won 139-of-215 this year and is ninth nationally with a .647 faceoff winning percentage. May had nine groundballs in the win and has 96 on the year, ranking sixth in the NCAA with 8.0 a game. Junior Robby Haus was second for the Buckeyes with three groundballs and had a caused turnover.

The Blue Jays converted their one extra-man chance on the night, just the second EMO goal allowed by the Buckeyes this season. Ohio State leads the NCAA in man-down defense, stopping 14-of-16 (.875) opponent chances. The Buckeyes were unable to score on three chances.

King leads the Buckeyes with 29 goals, 17 assists and 46 points this season. It was his fifth career five-goal game (the second against Johns Hopkins) and his third of the season. He now has 177 career points, moving into fourth place in program history, and his 106 career goals rank fifth, while he is ninth all-time with 71 assists. Brown's six-goal game was a career high after two four-goal days (last March 17 at Towson). He is second on the team with 24 goals, 13 assists and 37 points this year and has five games with four or more points. Planning had his second four-point game of the season and has 11 goals, 12 assists and 23 points, tying Hunter for third in goals and ranking third in assists and points.

WLAX: No. 14/18 Ohio State falls at No. 3/3 Duke, 15-6
Buckeyes are back in action at 11 a.m. Sunday vs. No. 1 Maryland at Ohio Stadium

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The No. 14/18 Ohio State women's lacrosse team fell on the road this afternoon at No. 3/3 Duke, 15-6, at Koskinen Stadium in Durham, N.C.

The loss drops Ohio State to 10-4 overall with three regular season games remaining before the Big Ten tournament. Duke improved to 13-1.

Junior Cian Dabrowski netted a hat trick - all in the second half - to lead the Buckeyes. Senior Jennifer Porretto added two goals and senior Mary Kate Facchina had one. Senior Jackie Cifarelli added an assist on Dabrowski's third goal of the game.

The Blue Devils were in control for most of this one as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead less than 4 minutes in. Porretto then put the Buckeyes on the board at the 26:26 mark to make it 3-1. However, Duke would score the next five goals to take an 8-1 lead into halftime.

The second half was a different story as the Buckeyes battled and played even with the Blue Devils the rest of the way, winning the ground balls 9-8 and draw controls 10-3. But the first-half deficit proved too much to overcome as Duke forced 10 Ohio State turnovers in each half and held the upper hand with a 33-19 shot advantage, including 17-8 in the first half.

Brigid Smith and Katie Trees led Duke with three goals each.

Ohio State will take on its second consecutive Top 5 opponent when it hosts No. 1 Maryland at 11 a.m. Sunday at Ohio Stadium. Admission is free and will also be televised on BTN and BTN2Go.com.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The No. 11-ranked Ohio State men's lacrosse team claimed the Creator's Trophy with a 13-8 win over Michigan Sunday in Michigan Stadium. The Buckeyes, winners of their last three games and 6-1 in their last seven outings, improve to 10-3 overall and are 3-0 in Big Ten Conference play. The game was the first for Ohio State and Michigan (5-6, 1-2 B1G) as B1G foes.

"This was a great overall team effort," Nick Myers, Ohio State head coach, said. "We understood the responsibility we had to win on the road together. We are excited to bring home a Big Ten win and the Creator's Trophy back to Columbus."

Next up, the Buckeyes will host No. 3-ranked Maryland at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Showdown in the Shoe prior to the Ohio State football spring game. General admission tickets, which include both the lacrosse and football games, are $5 each and can be purchased online (go.osu.edu/ Buy2015SpringGameTix), in person at any Ticketmaster outlet or the Ohio State Ticket Office or by calling 1-800-GOBUCKS. Tickets will also be available on game day. Children 6 and under are free, along with Ohio State students who present a valid BuckID.

Sunday in Ann Arbor, Ohio State scored the game's first two goals before Michigan tallied four in a row to take a 4-2 lead early in the second quarter. The Buckeyes answered with a five-goal run, shutting out the Wolverines until halftime, to carry a 7-4 lead into intermission. Ohio State outscored Michigan 5-2 in the third quarter to extend the lead to 12-7. Michigan scored twice, with one Ohio State goal, in the fourth quarter for the 13-8 final.

In all, 12 Buckeyes had at least one point in the win, with eight scoring at least one goal. Freshman Colin Chell led the way with a career high three goals, two assists and five points. Senior David Planning had his first career three assist and five point outing. Junior Carter Brown had two goals and an assist for a three-point day and junior Ryan Hunter scored twice, while seniors Jesse King (1g, 1a) and Turner Evans (2a) had two points each. Redshirt sophomore goalie Tom Carey made 11 saves and graduate student Christopher May had 13 faceoff wins and picked up a game-high 10 groundballs, as well as scoring a goal.

In the first quarter, Ohio State opened the scoring at 14:03 on a goal from Planning, set up by Evans, and Brown scored 16 seconds later (13:47) off an assist from senior Reegan Comeault. Michigan scored the next four goals to take a 4-2 lead at 12:17 of the second quarter. The Wolverines got on the board 15 seconds after Brown's goal (13:32), tied the game at 9:36 and went ahead 3-2 at 6:07. Shots were 10-9 in favor of the Buckeyes in the quarter.

The Wolverines' Kyle Jackson netted the first goal of the second quarter at 12:17 for a two-goal advantage (4-2). Ohio State then went on a five-goal run, including three goals in the final 1:40, for a 7-4 lead at halftime. Sophomore John Kelly found King for a goal at 10:19 and Planning set up Chell for a goal at 8:26 to tie the game at four. At 1:40 Planning assisted on a goal from Hunter that trickled in to put Ohio State on top (5-4). May won the next faceoff and ran into the UM zone and scored his second goal of the year, tallying just six seconds after Hunter's tally. With time winding down, Pfister came around the net and found sophomore JT Blubaugh at the far side for a goal with nine seconds left in the quarter. Ohio State outshot Michigan, 14-8, in the stanza.

The Buckeyes outscored the Wolverines 5-2 in the third quarter, part of a 10-3 run, to push ahead, 12-6. UM scored the first goal of the stanza at 13:19 to make it a two-goal game (7-5). Soon after, Buckeye freshman Erik Evans caused a turnover and cleared the ball; Planning found Brown for a goal at 11:59 to complete the play. At 9:58 Brown set up a score by Hunter for a 9-5 Ohio State lead. UM answered at 8:40 but Chell scored back-to-back goals - at 7:47 set up by Evans and man-up at 6:14 assisted by King - to make the Buckeye lead 11-6. Chell assisted on a goal from sophomore John Kelly at 2:20 for the final goal of the quarter. Each team had eight shots in the stanza.

The teams combined for three goals in the fourth quarter, with Michigan outshooting the Buckeyes 10-7. UM's Mike Francia tallied man-up at 10:18 and Planning scored for the Buckeyes, taking a pass from Chell after he picked up a rebound, at 5:58. The final goal came from the Wolverines with 16 seconds left in regulation.

Ohio State outshot Michigan, 39-35, in the game. Carey had 11 saves, allowing seven goals, in 59:15 for the Buckeyes. It was his ninth game with 10 or more saves this season and he has a 7.65 goals-against average and .559 save percentage this year. Senior Cameron Stephens played the final 45 seconds and allowed one goal. Michigan's Gerald Logan had 11 saves in all 60 minutes.

The Buckeyes had the edge in groundballs (36-28), faceoffs (16-9) and clears (15-for-16/14-for-21). May had a team-high 10 groundballs for the Buckeyes and won 13-for-20 faceoffs, while sophomore Jake Withers won 3-of-5 and had two groundballs. This season, May has won 152-of-235 (.647) faceoffs and has a team-high 106 groundballs (8.15 per game). Junior Chris Mahoney had two of the Buckeyes' six caused turnovers in the game.

The Creator's Trophy is an annual traveling award among the first three Big Ten member schools that sponsored men's lacrosse (Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State) that was established in 2012. The trophy is only awarded when a team is 2-0 vs. the other schools. The Buckeyes, who first won the trophy in 2013, won at Penn State March 29 (10-8) to open Creator's Trophy play before the victory over Michigan.

King leads the Buckeyes with 30 goals, 18 assists and 48 points this season. Brown is second with 26 goals and 40 assists and tied with Planning for second with 14 assists each.
