Ford and Lucas earn Baseball Weekly Awards

PROVIDENCE, R.I. ? In a strong week across The American, players from Houston and Louisville again earned recognition for Weekly Awards. Cougars' pitcher Tyler Ford was recognized as Pitcher of the Week, while Louisville infielder Zach Lucas was named Player of the Week. Ford is the second straight Houston hurler to win Pitcher of the Week, while Lucas follows teammate Jeff Gardner as Louisville recipients of Player of the Week.

Ford had two exceptional outings out of the bullpen for Houston, who went 4-0 on the week to improve to 7-0 on the season. The senior notched the win by tying a career-high with 5.1 innings in relief against No. 15/15 Rice, scattering two hits with two strikeouts. He also came in against Michigan, stranding two inherited runners and throwing 2.2 scoreless innings. For the week, Ford totaled eight scoreless innings pitched with just three hits surrendered and no walks, a WHIP of 0.375 and 0.00 ERA. Ford is part of a Houston pitching staff that has been remarkable in the season's first two weeks, with shutout innings in 60 out of 64 frames, and a staff ERA of 0.84.

Lucas supplied the power for a Louisville offense that averaged 11 runs a game over a 3-1 week. The junior connected for a pair of three-run home runs, totaling eight RBIs while hitting .313 and slugging .688. He set a career-high with four RBIs against Eastern Kentucky on Wednesday, then tied that mark by driving in four more in his next game Friday against Western Michigan.

Honor Roll

PREVOST KEYS SETON HALL BASEBALL'S ROMP OF #22 ARIZONA

TUCSON, ARIZ. ? Senior Josh Prevost (Belle Mead, N.J.) pitched eight strong innings of one-run baseball as Seton Hall upended #22 Arizona, 9-1, Friday night.

Prevost turned in his third consecutive quality start to begin the season and improved his record to a BIG EAST-best, 3-0. He gave up only five hits and struck out seven batters without issuing a single walk.

Offensively, Seton Hall pounded out nine runs and 13 hits. The Pirates were again led by junior Sal Annunziata (Bronx, N.Y.), who went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Arizona starter James Farris entered the game having allowed just one earned run this season, but Seton Hall's offense struck for four runs just moments into the game. With one out, Chris Selden (Allenhurst, N.J.), Kyle Grimm (Bergenfield, N.J.) and Annunziata, hit back-to-back-to-back singles to load the bases. Tyler Boyd (Succasunna, N.J.) then promptly unloaded them, smashing a three-run triple into the right field corner. With two outs, D.J. Ruhlman (Belle Mead, N.J.) extended his hitting streak to seven games with an RBI single to right field, which scored Boyd, and the Pirates had a 4-0 lead.

In the top of the fifth inning, the Pirates tacked on another run. A single by Annunziata put runners on the corners and Boyd followed with a double play grounder that scored Grimm.

Prevost made quick work of Arizona in the game's early goings. The 6-foot-8 right-hander sent down the first 12 batters to face him until the Wildcats broke through with a leadoff double to begin the bottom of the fifth. Two batters later, the shutout was lost on an RBI single by Arizona's Jordan Berger.

But Prevost settled back down and retired Arizona in order in both the sixth and seventh innings.

The Hall's offense also struck for insurance runs in the game's final three innings. Among the late inning superlatives, Dillon Hamlin (Colts Neck, N.J.) smashed a two-out, two-run triple in the top of the ninth. Hamlin finished 2-for-5.

Arizona's James Farris took the loss. He falls to 2-1.

The victory is Seton Hall's fourth straight and improves its record to 5-2. It's the program's best start to a season since 1987. That season, the Pirates won their first BIG EAST Championship.

Seton Hall will resume its three-game series with Arizona tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. ET.

SUBJECT: Delaware Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Fordham, Wins First Game Behind Pitching Gem by Gatto

DATE:  March 1, 2014

sws:

BEL AIR, Md. -- University of Delaware pitcher Dan Gatto came up with a gem in the home opener for the Blue Hen baseball squad Saturday afternoon as he allowed just three hits in eight innings on the way to a 3-1 victory in the first game of a doubleheader against Fordham.

Fordham (2-3) picked up the win in the second game as the Rams scored four runs in the seventh inning to come away with a 5-3 victory.

Both games were played at Harford Community College as Delaware's Bob Hannah Stadium is currently undergoing renovations that have been delayed due to the severe winter weather.

The two teams will close out their three-game set Sunday at 1 p.m. at Harford CC.

The Hens (4-5) won their third straight game in the opener as Ty Warrington delivered a run-scoring double in the third inning, Brock Niggebrugge drove in a run on a fielders choice in the fifth inning and later scored for the 3-1 lead.

Luke Alicknavitch pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his fourth save of the year and secure the win for Gatto. He induced a double play to clinch the UD victory.

In the scheduled seven-inning nightcap, Delaware took a 3-1 lead after six innings as Zach Lopes, who had four hits on the day, knocked in a run with a double in the second inning and a run-scoring single in the fourth, and Warrington scored on a wild pitch in the sixth inning.

Brandon Hinkle went six strong innings on the mound for Delaware, allowing just four hits and striking out 11 batters before giving way to Alicknavitch in the seventh.

But the Hens could not hold the lead as Fordham scored four times in the top of the inning to pick up the victory. A sacrifice fly by Brendan Maghini cut the lead to 3-2 and an RBI single by Rob McCunney tied the score at 3-3.

The Rams then went ahead when McCunney scored on an error and upped the lead to 5-3 when Ryan Phelan scored on a passed ball.

"We got a great pitching performance from Gatto, going eight innings and giving up one run while striking out four," said Delaware head coach Jim Sherman. "Alicknavitch also came up great in getting the ground ball double play and the save. It was really tough and disappointing for us to lose that second game. We were in control for much of the day, but we let it get away from us by allowing those four runs in the seventh inning. We saw a great outing from (Brandon) Hinkle today, and (Luke) Alicknavitch has been good in save situations this season until that setback today. We have to bounce back and get that rubber game tomorrow."

BOYD LEADS SETON HALL BASEBALL TO 4-2 WIN AT ARIZONA

TUCSON, ARIZ. ? Junior Tyler Boyd (Succasunna, N.J.) went 2-for-4 with three RBIs as the Seton Hall baseball team defeated #22 Arizona, 4-2, in a rain-suspended, two-day affair.

Boyd crushed his first career home run in the fourth inning before the rains came on Saturday, and added a two-run double, after the rain on Sunday.

The game was locked in a pitcher's duel in its early goings, but in the bottom of the third inning Arizona appeared poised to score first. With just one out and runners on second and third, Arizona's Trent Gilbert hit a fly ball to Derek Jenkins (Allandale, N.J.) in left field. Zach Gibbons tagged third and raced for home, but Jenkins threw a bullet on target to the plate and Gibbons was out by a step.

In the next half inning, it was the Pirates' offense which struck first. With two outs, Boyd smashed his first career home run, a solo shot over the left field fence to give Seton Hall a 1-0 lead.

Shortly after the third out was made in the top of the fourth inning a downpour delayed play for a half hour before the game was officially suspended.

When play resumed on Sunday, it didn't take long for the Pirates' offense to start clicking again. With two outs in the top of the sixth, Kyle Grimm (Bergenfield, N.J.) walked and Sal Annunziata (Bronx, N.Y.) singled. Boyd followed with a two-RBI double to deep left-center field to extend the Seton Hall lead to 3-0.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Arizona put runners on first and second with no outs. But Dan Ditusa (St. Charles, Ill.) entered and retired the next three batters in order, while keeping the Wildcats off the scoreboard.

The next inning the Pirates found themselves in the same corner. Ditusa put two runners on with no outs, but this time Arizona scratched across a run on an RBI ground out. Conor Krauss (Randolph, N.J.) came on to get the third out and limit the damage. Seton Hall got the run back right away however, in the top of the eighth. The Pirates plated their fourth two-out run of the game on an RBI single by Annunziata that scored Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.).

The score would remain 4-1 until the bottom of the ninth inning. After Krauss struck out the leadoff hitter, he gave up a walk, a double, and a second walk to load the bases. Arizona's Trent Gilbert grounded out to third base, but a run scored and the tying runs moved into scoring position. After a third walk put the winning run on base, Krauss recorded the final out of the game on a grounder to first base.

Annunziata and Weigel also had two hits apiece for Seton Hall.

Junior Anthony Elia (Flanders, N.J.) started the game, pitching three innings without giving up a run, but his outing was cut short when the game was suspended. Sam Burum (Robbinsville, N.J.) was the first Seton Hall pitcher when the game was resumed on Sunday and earned the victory with two innings of shutout baseball. Krauss earned his second save of the season.

SETON HALL BASEBALL SWEEPS #22 ARIZONA WITH 11-2 VICTORY

TUCSON, ARIZ. ? Junior D.J. Ruhlman (Belle Mead, N.J.) went 4-for-5 to lead an offense that erupted for 11 runs and 15 hits as the Seton Hall baseball team completed a three-game sweep of #22 Arizona with an 11-2 victory on Sunday.

The streaking Pirates have now won six straight games and out-scored the Wildcats, 24-to-5, over the three-game series.

Offensive accolades on Sunday were plentiful. Ruhlman went 4-for-5 with a triple, three runs scored and his team-leading sixth stolen base. Sophomore Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.) reached base six times, going 3-for-4 with a double, two walks, two RBIs and three runs scored. Senior Chris Selden (Allenhurst, N.J.) went 2-for-5 with four RBIs.

Seton Hall scored early and often in Sunday's series finale. Weigel led off the game with a walk, and advanced to second on a ground out by Selden. Junior Kyle Grimm (Bergenfield, N.J.) followed with an RBI single through the right side to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead.

In the top of the second all nine Pirates came to the plate. Ruhlman led off with a single and moved to second when Chris Chiaradio (Teaneck, N.J.) walked. With one out, Weigel doubled down the left field line to score Ruhlman. Selden followed with a two-RBI single to left field and the Pirates had a 4-0 advantage.

Ruhlman led off the third inning with a triple to right-center field. Chiaradio followed with an RBI double down the left field line. With one out, Weigel scored Chiaradio with an RBI single to center field and extended the Pirates' lead to 6-0.

Meanwhile, Cahill was cruising until the fourth inning. Three straight Arizona singles to lead off the inning loaded the bases with no outs. A sacrifice fly netted the Wildcats' first run, and after another walk loaded the bases, a ground out cut the Pirates lead to 6-2.

Seton Hall got the runs back in the top of the fifth inning. Ruhlman's third hit of the day, three walks, a sacrifice fly and a passed ball led to two more Seton Hall runs in the top of the fifth inning. Ruhlman also stole his team-leading sixth base of the season while helping extend the Pirates' lead to 8-2. From there, the rout was on.

Cahill got the win and improved to 2-1 on the season. The right-hander went five innings with two earned runs and three strikeouts. Freshman Joe DiBenedetto (Staten Island, N.Y.) pitched two innings of scoreless relief and Steven Lombardi (Saddle River, N.J.) sent down the Wildcats in order in the final inning.

Freshman Jackson Martin (Collegeville, Pa.) recorded his first collegiate hit, scored two runs and walked twice in a fine outing by the Pirate newcomer.

Seton Hall will return to action on Wednesday, March 5 with a mid-week matchup at in-state rival Rutgers. First pitch in Piscataway is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Baseball Bangs Out 14 Hits But Drops 7-5 Setback to Fordham in Series Finale

DATE:  March 2, 2014

sws:

BEL AIR, Md. -- The University of Delaware jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and banged out a season-high 14 hits on Sunday, but it wasn't enough as the Blue Hen baseball team fell to Fordham 7-5 in the final game of the team's three-game weekend set at Harford Community College.

Joe Giacchino collected three hits and Norm Donkin, Jake Clark, and Gary Jones (two doubles) all had two hits, but the Blue Hens left 10 men on base and dropped their second straight game to fall to 4-6. Fordham, which defeated Delaware 5-3 in the nightcap of a doubleheader Saturday, won its second straight to improve to 2-3. Delaware had won Saturday's opener by a 3-1 score.

"We played well at times today but we had a couple of innings when we didn't play quite as well," said Delaware head coach Jim Sherman. "We need to do a better job with our hitting with runners in scoring position. We just need to find a way to win these types of games and win the series."

Down 7-4, Delaware scored a run in the eighth inning to pull to within two runs and had the bases loaded with two outs. However, Fordham reliever Greg Weissert entered the game and coaxed a groundout by EJ Stolztfus to end the inning. Donkin led off the ninth inning with a double, but he too was stranded as Weissert retired Jake Clark, pinch-hitter Greg Olenski, and Zach Lopes to close out the game and earn the save.

Fordham starter Tim Swatek earned the win as he shook off the rocky first inning and went five innings to even his record at 1-1. Delaware redshirt freshman starter Chad Martin, coming off a victory in his first career start last week vs. Campbell, allowed five runs in three innings and suffered the loss to fall to 1-1.

Delaware had jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning as Donkin, a junior who played his first two collegiate season at Harford CC, delivered a run-scoring single to open the scoring and Jones hit a double high off the leftfield fence to bring in another run. Jones later scored on an error.

But Fordham came right back in the top of the second to take the lead for good as the Rams scored four runs behind RBIs from Jason Lundy, Tim O'Connor, and Joseph Runco. The Rams then scored two more runs in the fourth on a Runco double and a Charles Galiano single and added another run in the sixth to take a 7-3 lead.

Delaware fought back to narrow the gap to 7-4 in the seventh when Giacchino led off with a double and scored on an error by Fordham shortstop Luke Stampfl. The Hens pulled to within 7-5 in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Alex Mottle, but couldn't put another run across.

The Blue Hens return to action this Wednesday, March 5, when they travel downstate to Dover to take on Delaware State at 2:30 p.m.

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Baseball Manages Just Three Hits, Falls to Rider 4-1 in Series Opener

DATE:  March 7, 2014

sws:

BEL AIR, Md. -- The University of Delaware managed just three hits the entire day and Rider took control with three runs in the first three innings as the Blue Hens dropped a 4-1 non-league baseball decision in the opening game of a three-game set Friday afternoon at Harford Community College.

Rider (3-6), which snapped a five-game losing streak, jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three innings and never looked back in posting the victory. Delaware (4-7), which scored its lone run in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by Zach Lopes, dropped its second straight game.

"Good pitching and good defense is always a winning combination and Rider displayed it today," said Delaware head coach Jim Sherman. "We got good pitching but had some defensive lapses and three hits isn't going to help you score many runs."

The two teams will continue action Saturday at 5 p.m. and will finish off the series Sunday at 1 p.m.

Delaware, which banged out a season-high 14 hits in its previous outing last Sunday, had a season-low three hits on Friday. EJ Stoltzfus had two hits and scored the lone run while Lopes added a single to go with his RBI sacrifice fly.

Rider managed just seven hits itself but took advantage of three Delaware errors and a solid outing by starting pitcher Kurt Sowa (1-2), who went seven innings and allowed just one hit while walking six and striking out seven. Mickey Donnelly and Vincenzo Aiello each pitched a scoreless inning of relief with Aiello earning his first save.

Delaware ace Dan Gatto took the loss as he allowed four runs in 5.2 innings and fell to 2-2 on the season. He walked five batters and his errant pickoff attempt in the opening inning allowed the Broncs to score in the first frame.

Rider put two more runs on the board in the third inning on an RBI double by Justin Thomas and a run-scoring single by Lee Lapinski. Rider scored it final run in the sixth inning on an RBI single up the middle from Mike Parsons.

Delaware, which had banged out at least six hits in all but one game this season, scored its only run in the fourth when Stoltzfus led off the inning with Delaware's first hit of the day, moved up to second when Norm Donkin walked, and advanced to third on a sacrifice by Jake Clark. Stolztfus then scored on a sacrifice fly to right field.

BEL AIR, Md. -- What a difference a day makes.

Just 24 hours after the Blue Hens collected just three hits in a series-opening loss to Rider, the University of Delaware bats came to life on the way to an 11-5 victory over Rider Saturday afternoon at Harford Community College.

The Blue Hens (5-7) snapped a three-game losing streak as they banged out 12 hits, including two big ones from Norm Donkin and Alex Mottle on the way to the victory.

The two teams will close out the series Sunday with a 1 p.m. start at Harford CC.

Delaware pulled away from an early 3-2 lead thanks to a five-run fourth inning that was highlighted by a bases-clearing double from Donkin. Mottle added a two-run home run, his first of the season, in the eighth inning.

"We played well tonight," said Delaware head coach Jim Sherman. "We got clutch hitting with Donkin's bases loaded double and from Mottle's homer in the eighth. (Starting pitcher) Brandon Hinkle battled for us once again on the mound to help us get the win."

Rider, which snapped a five-game losing streak in the 4-1 win over Delaware Friday, fell to 3-7 as the Broncs collected just six hits on the day.

Hinkle (2-1) continued to pitch well as he picked up his second win of the season as he went six innings, allowed four hits and three runs, and struck out eight Rider battlers. He now has 19 strikeouts in his last two starts.

Brock Niggebrugge pitched the eighth and Luke Alicknavitch struck out two in two scoreless innings to finish off the win.

Sherman shook up the Blue Hen lineup and it worked as Tyler Dean, Donkin, Zach Lopes, and Greg Olenski each banged out two hits. Olenski, who made just his second start of the season and played designated hitter, scored three times and Dean crossed the plate twice.

Delaware jumped out to a 3-2 lead after three innings behind an RBI double from Olenski and an RBI groundout by Tyler Powell in the second and a run-scoring single in the second by Lopes.

The Hens then exploded with a five-run fourth inning thanks to Donkin's bases-clearing double to the left-center wall and an RBI single by Warrington.

Rider pulled to within 9-5 with two runs in the eighth inning, but Delaware came right back in the bottom of the inning to add two more runs as Mottle his first home run of the season to right field to cap the scoring.

SUBJECT: Power Surge Sends University of Delaware Baseball to 15-4 Victory over Fairfield

DATE:  March 15, 2014

sws:

BEL AIR, Md. -- The University of Delaware used an impressive power surge, which included a season-high five home runs, 10 extra base hits, and 23 total hits, to pound Fairfield 15-4 Saturday afternoon in non-league baseball action at Harford Community College.

After producing 17 hits in a 10-2 win over Fairfield Friday, the Blue Hen bats were even more productive Saturday as Delaware scored 13 runs in a span of three innings to run away with the victory, the team's third in the last four outings and fourth straight "home" win at Harford CC.

The Blue Hens (8-8), who reached the .500 mark with the win, reached season-highs for home runs, hits, extra base and runs in the victory. The 15 runs were the most by a Delaware team since a 16-1 win over George Mason last March 7 and the 23 hits were the most since banging out 25 in an 18-10 win over Towson on Apr. 16, 2010. Delaware has now scored 10 or more runs in four straight games at Harford.

Catcher Ty Warrington and rightfielder Norm Donkin each hit two home runs and centerfielder Joe Giacchino added a solo shot as part of a three-hit game to lead the offensive fireworks. The Hens had hit just four total home runs in 14 previous games this season before exploding Saturday.

Warrington, Donkin, Giacchino, EJ Stoltzfus, and Zach Lopes each collected three hits while Donkin had a career-high five RBIs and scored three times and Warrington had four RBIs. Delaware's first four batters went a combined 12 for 20 with nine runs scored and seven RBIs. Designated hitter Greg Olenski also drove home three runs for the Blue Hens after entering the game in the fifth inning.

"It was great to see our guys follow up their strong performance from yesterday with another one today," said Delaware head coach Jim Sherman. "(Starting pitcher Brandon) Hinkle wasn't as sharp as he has been but he battled through and gave us a strong start. The offense obviously did a great job with Donkin and Warrington leading the way. Hopefully the guys will come out tomorrow just as hungry as they have been the last two days."

Delaware will close out the three-game set Sunday at 1 p.m. at Harford. The Hens have now defeated the Stags (3-7) five straight times.

Delaware starter Brandon Hinkle was overpowering on the mound as he struck out nine Fairfield batters in just five innings to gain his third win of the season. He struck out the side in both the second and fifth innings and had two more in the fourth. Brock Niggebrugge and Kevin Milley finished off the game with solid relief efforts.

Leftfielder Billy Zolga went 3 for 4, hit a solo home run in the sixth inning, and also doubled for Fairfield.

SUBJECT: Chad Martin's Gem Helps Delaware Baseball Shutout Fairfield 4-0 to Sweep Series; Sherman Wins 400th Game at Delaware

DATE:  March 16, 2014

sws:

BEL AIR, Md. -- The University of Delaware, which used its hot bats to post big victories over Fairfield the last two days, rode the arm of Chad Martin to victory Sunday as the redshirt freshman right-hander hurled a two-hitter and struck out 13 Stags batters to lead the Blue Hens to a 4-0 baseball victory at Harford Community College.

Delaware (9-8), which extended its win streak to three and won for the fifth time in the last six outings, got the big effort on the mound from Martin and used a three-run seventh inning to take control in the low-scoring affair. Fairfield (3-8) lost its fourth straight game. Delaware posted its first series sweep since taking three from former Colonial Athletic Association foe George Mason last Apr. 5-7.

The victory was a milestone one for the Blue Hens as head coach Jim Sherman earned his 400th career victory while at the helm of Delaware. He is now 400-329 in his 14th season and is one of only four coaches in UD athletics history to reach that milestone, joining his predecessor Bob Hannah (1,053 wins in 1965-2000), former volleyball head coach Barb Viera, and former softball head coach B.J. Ferguson.

Martin, who took a no-hitter into the seventh inning last Sunday in an 11-1 win over Rider, enjoyed his second straight impressive outing as he pitched his first career complete game and shutout for the Blue Hens.

He struck out 13 batters and did not issue a walk, He retired the first 11 Fairfield batters before Ryan Plourde's fourth inning double. He then mowed down the next seven batters before Rob LoPinto singled to lead-off the seventh. No Stag runner advanced past second base the entire game.

"What a dominating performance by Chad Martin with 13 strikeouts and going all nine innings for the shutout," said Sherman, whose team is now 6-3 in games at Harford CC this season. "We got a big two-out hit by our senior captain Alex Mottle, which got us going offensively. Overall, this was a great weekend, outscoring Fairfield 29-6."

"Winning 400 games is a product of having good kids and good assistants through the years," said Sherman. "It's an honor to reach 400 wins here at Delaware and I hope there are many more, but our main focus is winning the conference."

Delaware defeated Fairfield 10-2 in the series opener Friday and then used a season-highs of 15 runs, 23 hits, and five home runs en route to a 15-4 win on Saturday.

After Martin and Fairfield's Aaron Howell battled to a 0-0 stalemate over the first five innings, the Hens finally put a run across in the sixth as Mottle connected on a two-out RBI single to right field to score EJ Stoltzfus, who had reached base on an error.

Delaware then sealed the win with three runs in the seventh inning. Doug Trimble, who led the inning off with a single, scored on an error by Fairfield center fielder Alex Witkus to push the lead to 2-0. Stoltzfus later added an RBI single and Norm Donkin brought home another run with a groundout.

Martin became the first Delaware pitcher to hurl a complete game shutout since Michael Londino tossed a two-hitter in a 6-0 win over Delaware State on Mar. 16, 2010. The 13 strikeouts were the most by a Blue Hen hurler since Matt Soren struck out 15 La Salle batters as part of a 2-0 Delaware victory on May 4, 2013.

Delaware will continue action this Tuesday, March 18 when the Blue Hens host Maryland at 6:30 p.m. at Harford CC. The Hens will be looking to avenge a 10-1 loss at Maryland last Tuesday.

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Redshirt Freshman Chad Martin Earns CAA Pitcher of the Week Honors

DATE:  March 17, 2014

sws:

RICHMOND, Va. -- Thanks to a dominating effort on the mound in a 4-0 victory over Fairfield Sunday, University of Delaware redshirt freshman Chad Martin has been named the Colonial Athletic Association Pitcher of the Week for the period ending March 16.

A righthander from Darnestown, Md. (Quince Orchard High School), Martin was honored by the CAA for the second time this season after earning league Rookie of the Week honors back on Feb. 24.

Martin was brilliant during his outing Sunday as he hurled a complete game two-hit shutout as the Blue Hens (9-8) completed the three-game weekend sweep over the Stags. The Hens had earlier downed Fairfield 10-2 on Friday and 15-4 on Saturday.

Martin did not walk a batter and struck out a career-high 13 batters. Martin retired the first 11 Stag batters before allowing a double in the fourth and then set down the next seven batters before allowing a seventh-inning single. No Fairfield runner reached third base the entire day. It was his second straight impressive outing as he took a no-hitter into the seventh inning as part of an 11-1 win over Rider on March 9.

He became the first Delaware pitcher to hurl a complete game shutout since Michael Londino tossed a two-hitter in a 6-0 win over Delaware State on Mar. 16, 2010. The 13 strikeouts were the most by a Blue Hen hurler since Matt Soren struck out 15 La Salle batters in eight innings of work during a 2-0 Delaware victory on May 4, 2013.

For the season, Martin owns a 3-1 record with a 2.33 earned run average and 22 strikeouts in 27 innings. He leads the league in opponent batting average as foes have collected only nine hits and are batting just .108.

Delaware, which has won five of its last six outings, will return to action Tuesday to host the University of Maryland at Harford Community College in Bel Air, Md. for a 6:30 p.m. start. The Hens will be looking to avenge a 10-1 loss at Maryland last Tuesday.

In addition to Martin, William & Mary junior Michael Katz was named CAA Player of the Week while Northeastern pitcher Dustin Hunt was tabbed CAA Rookie of the Week.

HAWKS CANNOT HOLD EARLY LEAD IN LOSS AT UNCG
UMES leads 3-0 after two, Escanilla clubs three hits for Hawks

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team held an early lead against UNC
Greensboro, but the Hawks could not hold on, as the men fell to the Spartans, 16-5, at UNCG Baseball Field. Sophomore
Mike Escanilla (Waldorf, Md.) posted three hits for the second time in the past three games but the Hawks could not
register double-digit hits for the second consecutive game.

With the decision, UMES falls to 3-12, while UNCG evens its tally at 10-10.

UMES did not wait long to put the pressure on Spartans. With two away, senior Byron Campbell (Waldorf, Md.) reached
on an error and advanced to second on a wild throw. UNCG starter Andrew George kept Campbell at second after fanning
freshman Justin Dattilo (Pittsburgh, Pa.), who came into the game leading the Hawks with a team-high 14 RBI.

The Hawks struck first blood in the game when freshman Brock Long (Newark, Del.) singled up the middle to move over
freshman Skylar Murray (Millsboro, Del.), who earlier reached on a fielders choice. Freshman Chris Adams (Brentwood,
Md.) ripped a liner down the right field line to score Murray, before senior Stephen Bull (Millsboro, Del.) tripled home a
pair two batters later.

The 3-0 UMES lead did not last for long, as the Spartans chased UMES starter Chipper Smith (Florence, S.C.) from the
game with four in the bottom half of the frame. UNCG's Hunter King doubled in a run to bring the Spartan deficit to within
one and L.J. Kalawaia had a two RBI single to tie the game. UNCG made it five runs in the frame a short time later to take
a 5-3 lead.

UMES scored one in the fourth on an RBI flyout by Adams, but the Spartans extended their lead to five with three
unearned runs in the fifth.

The contest went quiet as the teams combined to score just two runs over the next three innings. It was a six-run push by
the Spartans in the eighth that blew the game out of proportion as UNCG went on to its ninth game in the past 13 games.

UMES was led by Escanilla, who was 3-for-4 with three assists. Adams and Bull each had two RBIs and one hit, while Turlik
scored a pair of runs and walked twice. Smith (0-3) was tagged with the loss after giving up five runs (four earned) in 2.1
innings. UMES made four errors altogether and struck out __ times at the plate.

The Spartans were paced by Sean Guite, who was 4-for-5 with three runs and two RBI. Guite and leadoff hitter Zac
MacAneney (three runs, three RBI) each homered in the game, while Julian Abreu was 3-for-5 with 10 putouts. UNCG
starter Andrew George picked up the win after allowing six hits and four runs in five innings. The Spartans threw three
players in relief and held the Hawks to one run the rest of the way.

UMES resumes play this weekend when the Hawks host Norfolk State for a three-game set. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. on
Saturday afternoon.

Patrick Peterson and his brother playing baseball at NC State University

No. 10 Pack Falls 7-4 Saturday at Maryland
NC State baseball battled back from an early 4-0 deficit to bring the go-ahead run to the plate in the eighth, but couldn't muster the offensive punch to finish the comeback

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
No. 10 NC State baseball fell 7-4 in game two of its series at Maryland on Saturday at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium.

The Wolfpack (14-7, 3-5 ACC) brought the go-ahead run to the plate during its three-run eighth inning, but couldn't produce a finishing kick to cement the comeback bid. Maryland (15-6, 4-4) opened up a 4-0 lead by the end of the second inning, and extended that lead to 7-1 before the Pack began to rally.

Patrick Peterson turned in a strong four innings of relief, holding the Terrapins to two earned on three hits with a season-high seven strikeouts. Logan Jernigan (3-2) took the loss on four earned over the first two innings. Cory Wilder and Will Gilbert pitched an inning each to close the game, striking out a pair combined.

Trea Turner hit his second homer of the year in a 1-for-3 day with two runs, an RBI, and a walk. Brett Austin scored once in a 1-for-5 effort. Carlos Rodon drew the start at designated hitter for the second time this year, and responded with a 1-for-3 game including an RBI. Andrew Knizner and Logan Ratledge provided one RBI each.

State fell into a 4-0 deficit before Turner's solo shot to left led off the fourth. Two more Terrapin runs crossed in the sixth to make it 6-1. One more scored in the seventh to stretch the lead to its widest margin.

Garrett Suggs started the Pack's eighth-inning rally with a one-out infield single to second. Austin singled to right and Turner walked to load the bases with one away. Knizner drove in the first run with an RBI single to left. Rodon was hit by a pitch to push the next across. Ratledge scorched an RBI single by the third baseman's outstretched glove to close the gap to 7-4. A pair of strikeouts by Maryland's Kevin Mooney ended the threat and sealed the Terrapin win.

NC State returns to action on Sunday at 1 p.m. Live stats will be available on GoPack.com. Fans can also follow along on Twitter by following @NCStateBaseball, or with radio coverage on 88.1 WKNC.

SPARTANS OUTLAST UMES IN SERIES RUBBER MATCH
Norfolk State takes the series 2-1, Hawks lose on walkoff

NORFOLK, Va. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team dropped a 7-6 decision to Norfolk State on
Sunday afternoon in the series' rubber match at Marty Miller Field. UMES outhit NSU 13-7 in the game, but were unable to
secure the victory in the final match of their second Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference series.

With the decision, UMES is now 4-14, 2-4 MEAC, while Norfolk State goes to 6-16, 3-3 MEAC.

With one away in the ninth, the Spartans used two consecutive doubles to tie the game at 6-6. The game appeared
headed for extra innings, but NSU would capitalize on a pitching change to single in the winning run. The hit ended a
great, hard fought series between the two teams over the past two days.

The two teams opened up the game scoreless through the first two innings, before UMES drew first blood with three in the
third. Sophomore Mike Escanilla (Waldorf, Md.) walked to begin the frame and moved to third on two wild pitches. After
senior Byron Campbell (Waldorf, Md.) reached on a walk, freshman Justin Dattilo (Pittsburgh, Pa.) drove Escanilla
home with a single to right.

Junior Greg Turlik (Gaithersburg, Md.) sent Campbell home a few batters later on an RBI groundout, before sophomore
Connor Breslin (Saylorsburg, Pa.) scored Dattilo with a double to make the score 3-0.

Sophomore Will Turley (Greensboro, Md.) stifled the Spartan bats for the first four innings and UME built its lead to 5-0
with two more runs in the fifth.

Norfolk State used three UMES errors to take a two-run lead and chase Turley from the match in the bottom of the fifth.
Turley was replaced by junior Chipper Smith (Florence, S.C.), who ended the threat after his first hitter. The Hawks
responded with one run in the sixth to take the lead, when Dattilo lined out to score senior Stephen Bull (Millsboro, Del.),
who opened the inning with a single.

Smith was fantastic over the next two innings as he led UMES into the last inning with a 6-5 lead. It was in the bottom half
of the ninth, however, where the NSU overtook the Hawks and raced to their sixth MEAC win of the year.

UMES was led by Escanilla, who was 3-for-4 with one RBI, while Breslin and junior Joshua James (Milford, Del.) each had
two hits. Breslin had two doubles and three other Hawks stole bases. Smith (0-4) was saddled with the loss after going 3.2
innings and allowing two earned runs. Turley pitched well for UMES to start as he allowed just one earned run in 4.2
innings against the Spartans.

The Hawks will stay on the road for their next contest when they travel to Towson to take on the Tigers on Wednesday at
3:30 p.m. The match is the first of four for UMES on the week as they are set to host Delaware State for a three-game set
next weekend at Hawk Stadium.

Re: UD/Natl HS Baseball Reports

Santa Barbara, CA - UC Santa Barbara defeated Wagner 7-1 in the second game at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.

With today's doubleheader sweep, the Gauchos improve to 16-3 while the Seahawks fall to 2-14.

UC Santa Barbara opened the scoring in the bottom of the first thanks to RBI singles from Woody Woodward and Cameron Newell. However, the damage could have been worse as freshman RHP Danny Marsh got the second out via a strikeout before inducing an inning-ending ground out to leave the bases loaded.

The Gauchos added to the lead with an unearned run in the bottom of the second in opening up a 3-0 lead.

Wagner would get on the board in the top of the third inning. Junior Shaun Flynn (Tabernacle, NJ / Burlington CC) then reached via an error to load up the bases, but UCSB starter Austin Pettibone quelled the rally by inducing an inning-ending fly out.

Marsh settled down after allowing a second-inning run, retiring seven-straight before and just one hit over his final three innings of work.

UC Santa Barbara added to the lead in the sixth on Ryan Clark's RBI single before adding three more scores in the eighth while opening up a 7-1 lead.

Wagner threatened in the top of the ninth, loading up the bases on walks to sophomore John Lynn (Wallingford, PA / Salesianum School (DE)) single. Unfortunately, the Seahawks would leave the bases loaded for the second time on the afternoon.

In defeat, Marsh (0-1) struck out one while allowing three runs, two earned, over 5.0 innings of work while Pettibone (1-0) garnered the win.

The teams will conclude their series with a single game tomorrow starting at 1:00 pm.

No. 15 UCSB Topples Wagner In Game One

Box Score (PDF)

Santa Barbara, CA - [/B]No. 15 UC Santa Barbara scored 12 runs over the first four innings en route to posting a 13-3 win over Wagner in first game of a doubleheader at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.

With the victory, the Gauchos improve to 15-3 while the Seahawks fall to 2-13.

Freshman Nick Mascelli (Clifton, NJ / Seton Hall Prep) led the Green & White's seven-hit attack, going 2-for-3 with a run and a walk.

UCSB opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first before adding to the lead with two more runs in the second.

UC Santa Barbara then opened up the game with five unearned runs in the third in extending the lead out to 8-0.

Junior Nick Dini (Monroe Township, NJ / Monroe Township) put Wagner in the board in the top of the fourth with his second home run of the season, a deep blast over the left field fence to trim the deficit to 8-1.

Unfortunately, the Gauchos would answer with three runs in the bottom part of the frame in opening what would prove to be an insurmountable 11-1 advantage.

The Seahawks plated two more runs on junior Chris Smith's (Tampa, FL / Ellsworth CC (IA)) seventh-inning RBI single.

UCSB would get those two runs in the bottom of the seventh in providing the final 13-3 tally.

Four different UC Santa Barbara players recorded multiple hits to lead a 14-hit attack. RHP Robby Nesovic (2-1) earned the win, striking out six while yielding three runs, two earned, over 7.0 innings.

Senior LHP Matt Morris (Matawan, NJ / St. John Vianney) was the tough-luck losing pitcher, allowing 11 runs, five earned, over 3.2 innings.

SUBJECT: Weekend Ends on High Note For University of Delaware Baseball as Blue Hens Down Bryant 5-4; Split Doubleheader

DATE:  March 22, 2014

sws:

BEL AIR, Md. -- A tough weekend finally ended on a high note for the University of Delaware baseball team.

After suffering a pair of one-sided losses in a doubleheader sweep Friday and seeing their monumental comeback attempt fall short in the first game, the Blue Hens finally got the best of Bryant Saturday afternoon with a 5-4 comeback victory in the second game at Harford Community College.

The victory, which saw the Hens overcome a 4-0 deficit with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings and three more in the seventh, helped the Blue Hens (10-12) earn a split on the final day of the two-day, four-game non-league set. Bryant (10-8) had won games by scores of 14-2 and 11-0 on Friday and 10-9 in 10 innings earlier on Saturday.

Delaware junior center fielder Joe Giacchino was the hero in the second game as his two-out single to right field in the bottom of the seventh capped a three-run inning and plated Alex Mottle with the game-winner.

After trailing 4-0 after four innings, the Hens mounted their comeback with home runs by Ryan Hartley in the fifth and Cameron Travalini in the sixth. Doug Trimble singled and moved to third on a double by Greg Olenski - his second of the game - before scoring on a Ty Warrington sacrifice fly. Olenski then scored when Alex Mottle got on base on an error by Bryant third baseman John Mullen and scored when the left-handed Giacchino's banged out his clutch hit.

"Our guys really battled today," said Delaware head coach Jim Sherman, whose team snapped a four-game losing streak. "Being down eight runs late and coming back to tie only to lose in extra inning was tough, but to see our guys come back in the second game with three runs in the last inning to win it was something special. Just 24 hours ago we played our worst baseball of the year, and to come back and almost split the series was good to see. I'm proud of all the guys."

Delaware freshman pitching ace Chad Martin trailed 4-1 after five innings as Bryant scored all four of its runs in the second inning on an RBI double by Zaine Smith and a three-run homer by Dan Cellucci. Martin gave way to Brock Niggebrugge (1-0), who was brilliant in his two innings on the mound to gain the win. He struck out the side in the sixth and got the final out on another strikeout in the seventh with two runners on base.

The first monumental comeback attempt fell agonizingly short in the opener as the Hens dropped a 10-9 decision in 10 innings. Delaware fell behind 9-1 after seven innings but proceeded to score eight runs in the bottom of that inning to tie the game up at 9-9.

Bryant scored a run in the top of the 10th and then got out of a jam in the bottom of the ninth to preserve the win. Delaware had runners on first and second with two outs but Bryant reliever Michael Marshall got Delaware's Zach Lopes to fly out to center field to end the game.

The Blue Hens' seventh inning comeback was highlighted by a three-run home run by Hartley and a grand slam from Trimble that tied the game. Bryant scored the game-winning run off Delaware relief ace Luke Alicknavitch (0-2) on a home run by Tom Gavitt with two outs.

Bryant hit five home runs in the first game while Delaware also got a round-tripper from Mottle.

Bullets Top PSU-Mont Alto, Win 11th Straight
Simon Posts 100th Career RBI

GETTYSBURG, Pa. ? The Gettysburg College baseball team scored eight runs in the first inning and never looked back, defeating Penn State-Mont Alto 17-2 for its 11th win in a row Thursday afternoon in a non-conference game at a blustery Kirchhoff Field.

The Bullets (14-3) have now posted their longest winning streak in over 80 years. The last time Gettysburg won 11 straight occurred over parts of the 1929 and 1930 seasons, when the Bullets posted a school-record 14 consecutive victories, winning their final two games in 1929 and their first 12 games in 1930.

Senior Mike Elisio (Bensalem, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep) finished 3-for-3 with two runs and three RBIs for Gettysburg, which out-hit Mont Alto 19-7. Classmate Nate Simon (Gwynedd Valley, Pa./Abington Friends School) was 2-for-4 with a triple, three runs, and three RBIs, the last of which gave him 100 RBIs for his career. He becomes just the seventh player in school history to reach the milestone and the first since Mike Backus '10 in 2010.

Senior Patrick O'Grady (Floral Park, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) went 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs while senior Austin Davis (New York, N.Y./Riverdale Country School) scored three runs. Sophomore Andy Kelley (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) and senior Tommy LeNoir (Bear, Del./Red Lion Christian Academy) each finished 2-for-2.

A total of 24 Bullets appeared in the game, and Kelley, sophomore Andrew Hourigan (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South), and sophomore Shawn Moffitt (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) all recorded their first collegiate hit.

Freshman Rich Power (Toms River, N.J./Monsignor Bonner) started on the mound for the Bullets and tossed five shutout innings. Power (2-0) allowed five hits and no walks while striking out six. Freshman Kyle Considine (Canaan, Conn./Taft School) yielded two runs on one hit and four walks in the sixth before seniors Rob Stalzer (Merrick, N.Y./Bellmore JFK) and Joe Saladino (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) blanked the Nittany Lions over the final three innings. Stalzer allowed just one hit and one walk while striking out four over two innings before Saladino worked a hitless ninth.

Jonathan Furness and Aaron Maze each finished 2-for-3 for Mont Alto, which was playing its season opener.

Power escaped the first inning after allowing a leadoff double before Gettysburg's bats went to work in the bottom of the frame against starter Dylan Bryan. The Bullets sent 12 batters to the plate and O'Grady smacked both of his doubles in the inning.

Gettysburg would tack on nine more runs from the second through the seventh, scoring two apiece in the second, third, fourth, and seventh innings.

The Bullets play their Centennial Conference opener on Saturday, when they visit Ursinus College at 12:30 p.m. in a doubleheader.

SUBJECT: University of Delaware Offense Gets Hot, but William & Mary Completes Sweep of CAA Baseball Doubleheader

DATE: March 28, 2014
jhw:

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. ? The University of Delaware bats heated up by late afternoon, but it wasn't enough for the Blue Hen baseball squad to salvage a split with host William & Mary in the Colonial Athletic Association opener Friday at Plumeri Park.

Williams & Mary (18-7, 2-0 CAA) used a three-run inning in the opener to post a 5-4 victory, then banged out 14 hits in the nightcap to win 13-10 and sweep Delaware (10-14, 0-2 CAA) in the doubleheader.

The teams will be off Saturday before returning to action Sunday for the third and final game of the weekend series.

In the opener, a three-run fifth inning highlighted by a two-run home run from the Tribe's Ryan Lindemuth gave William & Mary its first lead and put the game out of reach.

Despite losing his fourth game of the year, Delaware senior Dan Gatto (3-4) still managed to pitch a complete game. The right-hander gave up four earned runs on 10 hits with seven strikeouts in eight innings of work.

The Blue Hens were led offensively by Norm Donkin and Ryan Hartley. Donkin, a first-year transfer from Harford (Md.) Community College, recorded two hits and added to his team lead in runs scored (14) and stolen bases (7).

Hartley hit his third home run of the year, which gave Delaware a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning. The Blue Hens added another run in the fifth on a Joe Giacchino single which scored E.J. Stoltzfus.

For the third game in a row, Delaware launched a late-inning rally. In the ninth inning, Alex Mottle pinch-hit and doubled to score Zach Lopes and put the tying run in scoring position with no one out. The Blue Hens, however, were unable to get another hit as Hartley and Tyler Powell each struck out and Ty Warrington lined out to end the game.

Despite putting up double-digit runs for the first time in seven games and banging out 15 hits in the nightcap, the Hens could not keep up with the firepower of William & Mary and fell 13-10.

Delaware jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the third inning on the strength of Stoltzfus' first home run of the season and doubles from Lopes and Mottle. But the lead would not hold up as the Tribe scored four runs in the third, seven in the fourth, and two more in the fifth to take an 11-5 advantage.

Delaware redshirt freshman pitcher Chad Martin gave up only one hit in the first two innings, but gave up four runs in the third and was unable to get through the fourth after giving up another four earned runs.

Martin was relieved by freshman John Geffre after just 3.1 innings and suffered his second loss of the season. Geffre pitched out of the inning and junior Luke Alicknavitch pitched the remaining four innings for Delaware.

Delaware did make a valiant comeback, but five runs in the seventh inning were not enough.

Mottle and Donkin provided the fuel for the Blue Hen attack. Donkin had another three hits and notched his team-leading ninth double of the year. The right fielder had five total hits in the doubleheader. Mottle had three hits in the second game, knocked in two runs, and scored two more runs of his own.

Senior Jake Clark led the Blue Hens with three RBI while fellow senior Cameron Travalini knocked in two runs for Delaware in the second game.

FLORIDA RECORDS TWO WINS OVER LSU SATURDAY

GAINESVILLE, Fla. ? Freshman right-hander Logan Shore worked a career-high 8.2 innings Saturday night to lead Florida to a 6-2 win over fourth-ranked LSU and a sweep of an SEC doubleheader at McKethan Stadium.

The Gators won Game 1 by a final score of 2-1 on a solo, walk-off homer by leftfielder Justin Shafer in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Florida improved to 18-9 overall and 5-3 in the SEC. LSU is 20-7-1 overall and 3-4-1 in conference play.

The teams will conclude the series at 1 p.m. ET Sunday. The game will be carried in Baton Rouge on WDGL 98.1 FM, and live video, audio and stats may be accessed in the Geaux Zone www.LSUsports.net.

"It was a tough day, but I don't think there was that much separating the two teams today," said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. "We actually out-hit them in both games, but we didn't take advantage of the chances we had to score. The difference between winning and losing games in the SEC can be very small. We just have to keep battling and plugging away and realize that tomorrow gives us a new opportunity.

"We'll work as hard as we can to get a win tomorrow and look forward to having our next two SEC series at home."

Shore (2-1) limited the Tigers to two runs on six hits in 8.2 innings with one walk and five strikeouts, firing 99 pitches. LSU freshman left-hander Jared Poche' (5-2) was charged with the loss as he allowed six runs (four earned) on four hits in five innings with three walk and one strikeout.

Shore and Poche' were locked in a scoreless pitchers' duel until the Gators struck for three runs ? two unearned - in the fifth inning. With the bases loaded and one out, LSU second baseman Kramer Robertson mishandled Florida first baseman Peter Alonso's potential double play grounder, allowing two runs to score. The Gators added a third run in the inning on leftfielder Ryan Larson's sacrifice fly.

Florida extended the lead to 6-0 in the sixth when shortstop Richie Martin walked, centerfielder Harrison Bader singled and catcher Taylor Gushue unloaded a three-run homer off of Poche'.

The Tigers scored a pair of runs in the eighth inning against Shore as first baseman Conner Hale singled and catcher Tyler Moore doubled to start the frame. Hale scored on third baseman Christian Ibarra's grounder before Moore scored on another RBI groundout by Robertson.

LSU had runners on first and second with two outs in the ninth, but reliever Bobby Poyner struck out pinch hitter Jared Foster to end the game. Poyner was credited with his second save of the season.

Shafer's solo blast to end Game 1 came against LSU ace Aaron Nola (5-1), who limited the Gators to just two runs on six hits with one walk and five strikeouts. With two outs in the ninth, LSU appeared to be headed to its third straight extra-inning game, but Shafer's dinger ? his first of the season ? gave Florida the victory.

"Aaron Nola pitched brilliantly, and it's a shame we couldn't score enough runs for him," Mainieri said. "We couldn't have asked for anything more than what he gave us on the mound today."

Florida reliever Aaron Rhodes (3-1), who retired the final two LSU hitters in the top of the ninth, was credited with the win. Starter Eric Hanhold worked the first 7.1 innings, allowing just one run on seven hits with one walk and three strikeouts.

LSU grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning of Game 1 when designated hitter Kade Scivicque launched a solo homer, his third dinger of the season.

The Gators tied the game in the third when second baseman Casey Turgeon launched his second homer of the season, a solo shot to left-center field.

HUNTINGDON,
Pa. ? In the final game of the three game series, the Juniata College
baseball team lost a back-and-forth bout with Drew University, falling
by a final score of 6-5. In a game with five lead changes, senior Joe
Sforza (Pittstown, N.J./Immaculata) hit two home runs going 3-for-4 on
the day with three RBI and three runs scored.

The
Eagles opened scoring with junior Cody Krepps (Tyrone, Pa. /
Bellwood-Antis) driving home Sforza on a two out single in the bottom of
the first inning. Drew tied the game at 1-1 with a run of its own in
the top of the second inning. It looked like Drew would take the lead in
the top of the third, but senior Brad Medellin (Lewisberry, Pa. / Red
Land) made a nice defensive play at second base to hold the runner to
third and get the second out of the inning. In the bottom of the frame,
Sforza put the Eagles back on top when he cranked a one out two-run
homerun over the left filed fence to plate himself and senior Derek
Heath (Huntingdon, Pa. / Huntingdon).

The Rangers
grabbed the lead again with three runs in the top of the fourth inning.
The score remained 4-3 Drew thanks to some quality field play by the
Eagles. With one out in the top of the seventh inning, the Rangers
attempted a suicide squeeze, but Juniata first baseman freshman Brady
Cotler (Chadds Ford, Pa. / Salesianum) was quick off the mark and
fielded the ball cleanly for the tag out at home plate by senior catcher
Dan Gray (Johnstown, Pa. / Richland).

Sforza tied the
game at 4-4 with a solo shot in the bottom of the seventh and Krepps
followed with a one out double the put the go ahead run in scoring
position. Krepps advanced to third on a ground out by Gray and scored on
a two out single through the left side by sophomore Anthony Lombardo
(Altoona, Pa. / Altoona Area). However, the lead would not hold as the
Rangers came back with two runs in the top of the eighth and shut down
the Eagles in the final two fames to earn the series sweep with the 6-5
win.

Juniata will take to the road for the next week
of play before returning home Monday, April 21, for a single game
against Elizabethtown College beginning at 3 p.m.

LSU DROPS GAME 3 TO ARKANSAS, 10-4

BATON ROUGE, La.? No. 24 Arkansas used two-four run
innings to take Game 3 over eighth-ranked LSU, 10-4, Sunday afternoon
at Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field.

LSU, which won the first two games of the series,
posted its eighth series win over the Razorbacks in the past nine
seasons. LSU is 27-9-1 overall and 8-6-1 in the SEC following Sunday's
loss, which ended the Tigers' seven-game win streak.
Arkansas improved to 22-15 overall and 7-8 in league play in handing
LSU its first SEC home loss this season.

LSU is only 1.5 games behind first-place Alabama
(10-5) in the overall league standings through the first half of the SEC
schedule.

The Tigers return to action Tuesday night for the
annual Wally Pontiff Jr. Foundation Baseball Classic against Southern
Miss at Zephyr Field in Metairie, La. The game will begin at 7 p.m., and
it will be televised on Cox Sports Television.
The game may also be heard on the LSU Sports Radio Network (98.1 in
Baton Rouge).

"It was a disappointing day for us," said LSU coach
Paul Mainieri. "We had a chance to sweep this series, but we didn't get
the job done today. We didn't pitch well, and although their starter
gave us nine free passes with seven walks and
two hit batters, we couldn't take advantage of it. We're certainly
pleased that we won the series, but we need to be better than we were
today.

"We've got a challenging week ahead, so we'll get
back to work and keep battling through the second half of the league
schedule."

Arkansas took an early 4-0 lead in the first inning
Sunday. With the bases loaded, LSU starter Kyle Bouman gave up a grand
slam to designated hitter Blake Baxendale.

LSU scored two runs in the second inning to cut the
lead to 4-2. With the bases loaded and two outs, left fielder Jake
Fraley hit a single up the middle to score Andrew Stevenson and Tyler
Moore.

In the fourth inning, Arkansas added another run
against LSU reliever Cody Glenn to extend the lead to 5-2. With runners
on the corners, catcher Jake Wise reached on a fielder's choice to score
Eric Fisher.

The Razorbacks added another four-run inning in the
fifth. With two runners on base after walks, second baseman Brian
Anderson hit a sacrifice fly to plate Andrew Benintendi. Baxendale
doubled to right field to score Joe Serrano. First
baseman Eric Fisher then hit his third home run of the weekend against
reliever Brady Domangue to score two more runs.

LSU cut into the lead in the sixth inning with a
sacrifice fly by Stevenson to score Moore. The Tigers added the final
run in the seventh inning on an RBI single by catcher Kade Scivicque to
plate designated hitter Sean McMullen.

Arkansas notched its final run in the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly by Benintendi to center field that scored Bobby Wernes.

Bouman (3-2) was charged the loss after allowing four runs on three hits in one inning with one walk and no strikeouts.

Arkansas starter
Chris Oliver (4-3) earned the win after allowing four runs on four hits
in seven innings with seven walks and one strikeout.

Re: UD DE HS and DE Ath News

Trea Turner tied career-highs for walks
(3 vs. Davidson, 4/23/13) and runs (4 vs. Wagner-2, 2/23/13) while going
1-for-1 with two RBIs and two stolen bases. His second steal of the
afternoon came in the eighth, when Turner swiped third on a throw back
to the mound from Duke's catcher. That stolen base gave him 100 for his
career to become the first player in NC State baseball history to hit
the century mark, and seventh in ACC history. Georgia Tech's Ty Griffin
holds the ACC career record with 127, set 1986-88.

Logan Ratledge
continued to rake, going 3-for-4 including a two-run homer in State's
four-run seventh. Ratledge made the switch to stirrups on his uniform
pants Friday night, and he's gone 5-for-10 with a homer, six RBIs, a
double, and two walks since rolling his pants up.

D.J. Thomas
(2-1) ended up with the loss on two unearned runs on two batters faced.
Patrick Peterson started and worked five, holding Duke to two runs, one
earned, with four strikeouts.

Andrew Knizner went 3-for-5 with
three RBIs, a double, and two runs. Brett Austin went 2-for-5 with a
run, an RBI, and his eighth double of the season. Bubby Riley and Jake
Fincher each scored once with a single.

NC State leapt out to a
2-0 lead in the top first. Turner led off with a walk and took second on
a wild pitch. Knizner and Ratledge smashed back-to-back RBI doubles to
plate the game's first two runs. Duke answered with a single run in the
bottom half.

State expanded that lead to 4-1 with runs in the
third and fourth. Turner walked to start the third inning rally, and
advanced to second by tagging on a foul out down the left field line.
Ratledge's two-out RBI single scored him. Turner drove in the run in the
fourth with a sac fly, scoring RIley from third after he legged out an
infield single to reach.

After Duke closed the gap to 4-3, the
Wolfpack responded with a four-run seventh. Turner walked, then stole
second and advanced to third after a pickoff throw behind him and an
errant relay throw to second from first. Austin kicked off a run of
three hits in a row with an RBI double to right to score Turner. Knizner
singled to center to score Austin. Ratledge finished the rally with his
two-run bomb to left.

Leading 8-4, State tacked on two more in
the eighth. Turner drilled an RBI single through the right side to score
Fincher from second after he reached on a fielder's choice and stole
second. Turner stole third with two away to set up Knizner's RBI single
up the middle.

Duke narrowed the margin to 10-9 with five runs in
the eighth on a pair of homers to left, before Beckman ended the threat
with back-to-back strikeouts and a picked off runner.

The Blue
Devils produced the game-winning run in the ninth after a leadoff walk.
Mark Lumpa dropped down a bunt to move the runner to second, but an
errant throw to first scored the tying run and moved Lumpa to third.
After a pair of intentional walks to load the bases, Aaron Cohn
delivered the game-winning hit on an RBI single to left.

NC State
returns to action at Durham Bulls Athletic Park on Tuesday, April 15
for a neutral site matchup with North Carolina. Radio coverage for
Tuesday's game will be carried on 99.9 The Fan. Fans can also follow
along with live stats on GoPack.com, or Twitter updates from

SPARTAN PITCHING TOO MUCH FOR HAWKS IN 13-3 LOSS
Cooper registers career-high three hits, NSU throws six pitchers total

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team fell in the final game of its Mid-Eastern
Athletic Conference series against Norfolk State on Sunday as the Hawks dropped a 5-3 decision to the Spartans. NSU
takes the series by a 2-1 advantage as they benefitted from 16 runners left on base by UMES.

Senior Stephen Bull (Millsboro, Del.) concluded the weekend 9-for-12 as he was 3-for-4 in the contest with a double. The
senior was 4-for-4 in yesterday's opener and had two hits in Saturday's second game. Senior Nick Cooper (Delmar, Del.)
had a career-high three hits, while sophomore Mike Escanilla (Waldorf, Md.) walked three times. Three UMES players had
RBIs on the day and Bull scored two runs.

It was Norfolk State (12-19) that scored first on the day with a pair of runs in the top of the first. Zach Markel sent home
Andre Moore for the first run and later scored on a wild pitch. The Hawks brought the game to within one the next half
when freshman Justin Dattilo (Pittsburgh, Pa.) walked to score senior Stephen Bull (Millsboro, Del.), who had previously
doubled.

The game then went quiet for the next three innings, before UMES (8-19) made a rally with two outs in the fourth. The
Hawks put runners on first and second, but an NSU pitching change saw Jeff Di Fulgo fan the second hitter he faced to end
the rally.

NSU upped its advantage to 3-1 in the fifth when Ross Cardwell homered to right.

The Hawks would load the bases again in their next plate appearance. UMES was unable to come away with a run in the
frame, however, as UMES went down in order to end the push. NSU scored one in the seventh on a sacrifice fly to deep
center that scored Andre Moore from second.

UMES brought the game to 5-2 with single tallies in the seventh and eighth. The Hawks scored the first on a sacrifice fly by
junior Joshua James (Milford, Del.) to score sophomore Connor Breslin (Saylorsburg, Pa.), before junior Greg Turlik
(Gaithersburg, Md.) singled home Bull.

Norfolk State posted six runs in the ninth to up their advantage and put the game out of reach.

NSU used six pitchers on the day as Cooper Jones (1-3) picked up the win with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief. Norfolk State
posted 17 hits on the day, eight of which were in the final frame. Moore led the charge with three hits, four runs and two
stolen bases. He was one of six hitters with multi-hit games as NSU posted 17 hits altogether. Devin Hemmerich was
fantastic out of the bullpen as he threw four innings to conclude the game and register his fourth save.

UMES will head north for its next contest when the Hawks make the trek to Bethlehem, Pa., to take on Lehigh for a
doubleheader on Tuesday, April 15 at 1 p.m.

Streak Continues as Bullets Slug Past F&M

Simon, Zanghellini Post Five RBIs

LANCASTER, Pa. ?
On the heels of a 20-hit attack in its last time out, the 29th-ranked
Gettysburg College baseball pounded out 19 more hits en route to a 21-4
victory at
Franklin & Marshall College in a Centennial Conference (CC) tilt
Sunday afternoon.

Senior Nate Simon (Gwynedd Valley, Pa./Abington Friends School) and junior
Scott Zanghellini (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) drove in five runs
apiece as the Bullets (24-3, 10-0 CC) extended their school-record to 21
games, the longest such streak in Division III this season.

Simon finished 2-for-4
with his second home run in as many days while scoring three runs for
the Bullets, who plated 13 runs after the fifth inning. Zanghellini went
3-for-5 as Gettysburg posted its highest scoring
output since a 22-19 victory over Dickinson College on April 15, 2003.

Other big offensive performances were turned in by senior
Tommy LeNoir (Bear, Del./Red Lion Christian Academy), who was 3-for-4 with four runs, senior
Patrick O'Grady (Floral Park, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy), who went 2-for-5 with three runs, and junior
Mike Kielbasa (Ludlow, Mass./Loomis Chaffee School), who finished 3-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs. In addition, senior
Al Posch (Hopedale, Mass./Hopedale) scored three runs, with his
second giving him 100 for his career at Gettysburg. He is the ninth
Bullet in school history to reach the mark and the second in as many
games, as O'Grady hit the milestone at Washington
on Saturday.

Senior Chris Yoda (Wall,
N.J./Wall) pitched six innings to earn the win on the mound, holding
the Diplomats to four runs (three earned) without allowing a walk.
Freshman
Aaron Bezio (Stafford, Va./Mountain View), junior Brett Harrington
(North Bennington, Vt./Mount Anthony Union), and O'Grady all tossed one scoreless inning apiece.

With the win, Gettysburg
swept its season series versus F&M (11-17, 3-7 CC) after topping the
Diplomats 11-0 in their Centennial Conference opener back on April 1.

The Bullets never trailed, jumping to an early 5-0 lead. Gettysburg
scored two unearned runs in the second, then added three runs (two
earned) in the third.

Yoda (3-1) retired the
first seven batters before F&M got on the scoreboard with a home run
from Avery Attinson in the bottom of the third, and the Dips would
score single runs in the each of the next three innings
as well. However, they were unable to keep pace with the Bullets, who
broke the game open with a five-run sixth that made it 13-3. Along the
way, Simon stroked a two-run double in the fourth while Zanghellini
clouted a three-run double in the sixth. On the
mound, Yoda stranded five runners over his final three innings,
including four that were in scoring position.

The Bullets continued to
pour it on in the seventh, scoring six runs and sending 12 batters to
the plate. Simon highlighted the inning with a three-run home run.

Gettysburg set the final score with a two-run ninth.

The Bullets take a break from their Centennial Conference schedule when they host Penn State-Harrisburg at 3:30 p.m. on Monday.
