Two Homers Lead Blue Rocks to Victory During Final Game of Homestand
Dash threaten late, but Rocks bullpen shuts door.

WILMINGTON, DE – The Blue Rocks got home runs from Zane Evans and Daniel Rockett on Monday night, and although Winston-Salem rallied late, the Rocks held on to win by a final of 4-3. The victory pushes Wilmington to 13-11, while the Dash fall to 11-13. The Blue Rocks finish their seven game homestand with a 5-2 record, taking two of three from the Myrtle Beach Pelicans in the first series, and grabbing three of four from the Dash thanks to Monday’s win.

Wilmington starter Eric Skoglund picked up his second win of the season, as he threw six innings, allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out three. The losing pitcher was Winston-Salem starter Jace Fry. The lefty worked five innings, yielding three runs and nine hits, and only struck out a single batter.

The Rocks struck first in the bottom of the second inning with a pair of runs. After Mauricio Ramos began the frame with a fly out, Dominique Taylor and Logan Moon followed with singles. Kenny Diekroeger would bring in the first run of the night with another single that plated Taylor and moved Moon to third base, and then Rockett drove Moon in with a sacrifice fly for the two run advantage.

Winston-Salem would get a run back in the very next half inning, although they would kill their own rally in the process. Cleuluis Rondon would begin the inning with a single, and Ethan Wilson would mimic his teammate with a base hit of his own, moving Rondon to third base in the process. Adam Engel would be next, and he grounded into a double play that scored Rondon to make it a 2-1 contest. After Keenyn Walker reached on an error by Jack Lopez, Skoglund got Trey Michalczewski to fly out, ending the frame.

After a scoreless bottom of the third, the Dash tied the ballgame up in the top of the fourth. Keon Barnum led things off with a double, and advanced to third base on a fly out by Chris Jacobs. Barnum would score on yet another fly ball, this time from Omar Narvaez, and the sacrifice fly made the score 2-2. Nick Basto would fly out to center field to conclude the inning.

The Blue Rocks got the lead back thanks to their second long ball of the home stand in the bottom of the fifth inning. With the bases empty and two out, Zane Evans launched a ball over the left field fence for his fourth homer of the campaign. For Evans, it was his first home run since he went yard twice on April 26 against the Frederick Keys.

Skoglund held the Dash scoreless in the top of the sixth inning, and Wilmington rewarded him with another run in the bottom of the frame. The Blue Crew got their fourth tally of the night in very similar fashion to their third, as the first two men of the inning went down, and Daniel Rockett smashed a homer over the left field wall. The long ball was Rockett’s first of the season, and it doubled the Rocks lead to 4-2.

The Dash made things interesting in the top of the ninth inning off Wilmington reliever Robinson Yambati. With the bases loaded and two out, Wilson worked a walk that brought in a run, making it 4-3. Yambati would settle down after that, striking out Engel on a called third strike to end the contest. The save marked Yambati’s sixth in seven opportunities.

Wilmington hits the road on Tuesday after a seven game homestand. The Blue Rocks travel to Potomac to battle the Nationals in the first of a three game series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m., and fans can listen to the broadcast on 89.7 WGLS-FM.

PEBBLES OF KNOWLEDGE:

Zane Evans stayed hot on Monday, hitting another home run for the Blue Rocks. The long ball marks the fourth of the season for Evans, and it came on the heels of a 4-for-4 day on Sunday, during which Evans knocked three doubles and produced two RBI’s. Evans’s four homers lead the team, as does his 11 extra-base hits and 14 RBI’s. In his last 10 games, Evans is batting .410 with three homers and 12 RBI’s.

Monday night marked the third time the Blue Rocks have homered twice in a game. The first time it happened was on April 10 in Myrtle Beach, when Bubba Starling and Evans went yard in their 8-3 victory. The second occurrence was thanks to one man, as Evans knocked a career-high two balls out of the park on April 26 at Frederick. On Monday, Evans went deep in the fifth inning, and Daniel Rockett hit one out in the sixth. Last year, Rockett did not hit his first home run of the season until June 21 at Myrtle Beach.

The Wilmington starting rotation has dominated the Carolina League thus far, and Monday night was no exception. Fresh off the longest outing of the season for a Rocks pitcher at seven innings earlier in the homestand, Eric Skoglund threw six frames on Monday, allowing two runs on seven hits. Blue Crew starters have combined to toss 128.1 innings, working to a 2.81 ERA. They have given up fewer hits (127) than innings pitched, and have struck out 108 batters while yielding only 23 walks all season long.

Bullpen pitcher Benino Pruneda walked Trey Michalczewski to begin the top of the sixth inning on Sunday, and after that, the Blue Rocks bullpen hurlers sat down 18 straight batters. The streak ended when Robinson Yambati gave up a lead-off double to Keon Barnum to begin the top of the ninth inning on Monday. During the streak, Wilmington bullpen pitchers struck out nine Winston-Salem batters between Pruneda, Estarlin Cordero, and Andrew Edwards.

THEY SAID IT:

Manager Brian Buchanan:

“They’re having a good approach. They’re getting good pitches to hit and they’re putting good swings on it. [Daniel] Rockett and [Zane] Evans hit the home runs, they’ve been doing a great job.”

“They don’t give up [with two outs]. It just goes back to them staying within themselves, being patient, and not trying to do too much. It just goes back to having professional at-bats and getting the pitch to hit and doing what you can with it.”

“It doesn’t make my job any easier, I’d rather win 10-0. Just knowing that…if it’s the eighth or ninth inning and we’re down two or three that there’s no panic, we’ve done it before. We’ll continue to do it. There’s not really a panic involved. A lot of time, in those situations, the pressure is on the pitcher, not the hitter. That’s what we’re trying to drive home; just relax and stick with your approach and the guy on the mound is the one in trouble, not you.”

“[Andrew Edwards] did a nice job. We’re trying to get him to throw down a little bit more. He’s got such a good arm but he’s been a little erratic but tonight was good.”

“I think [Robinson Yambati] has [pitched in the ninth] enough this year to know what he needs to do. The last three outs are the hardest to get when you’re in a save situation like that.”

Outfielder Daniel Rockett:

“Zane’s been doing it all season so we’ve kind of just been riding him a little bit. Last year it was kind of a curse because we didn’t hit [our first homeruns] until the second half of the season. That bet [between me and Zane Evans] is long gone, we don’t even think about that anymore.”

“We know every game is pretty much going to be close. All season, it’s been one or two runs games. We feel pretty comfortable going into the ninth, whether we’re up or we’re down. We just take it as the same approach, just trying to win the game.”

“To be honest, I was just hoping it was a hit because I’ve been struggling. It was a good feeling. I sure hope [this gets me out of my slump]. I’m just trying to stay confident and just taking it one at-bat at a time and not trying to look at the stats and just concentrate on good at-bats and helping the team.”

Catcher Zane Evans:

“I’ve got a new approach at the plate. [Abraham Nunez] has been working with me a lot. I’m just trying to stay up the middle and not do too much and it’s really paying off. There tonight with two strikes I just choked up on the bat a little bit and was looking for a knock and got a homerun. It’s part of the game, it’s how it works. Whenever you don’t try to hit a home run, it happens. I feel great up there.”

“I’m seeing some pitches better now that the approach has changed. Before, I was yanking off [the ball]. I had a lot of head movement and just wasn’t really seeing pitches and swinging at everything. Now, I’m able to see my pitch, and when I see it I can have a good swing at it.”

Blue Rocks Split First Double-Header Of The Season With P-Nats
Wilmington Finds The Offense In Game Two To Salvage Nightcap In Virginia

WOODBRIDGE, VA – After the first two games of their three-game series were rained out, the Rocks and Nationals finally got to play two on Thursday night and the two teams ended up splitting the twin-bill as Potomac takes game one 2-1 and the Rocks rebound to win game two 3-1. This was the first double-header of the year for the Blue Rocks. They will play another double-header against the Mudcats at the end of May.

In the nightcap from Pfitzner Stadium, the Rocks found the offense they lacked in game one. Big League rehabber Casey Janssen was the starter for Potomac and worked a 1-2-3 first inning, his only inning of work. Nick Pivetta replaced him out of the ‘pen in the second and was solid through his first two frames, but ran into trouble in the fourth inning. Frank Schwindel, who started behind the plate for Wilmington after getting the first game off, roped a single into centerfield with one-out. Zane Evans then got some help from Potomac catcher Craig Manuel who threw away a tapper in front of the plate, allowing Evans to reach and Schwindel to move to second. A Mauricio Ramos single would load the bases putting the Rocks’ offense in a situation they have not liked this season. Dominique Taylor struck out for the second out of the inning, but Pivetta lost command with Robert Pehl at the plate and walked him to force in the first run of the game. Logan Moon then helped out the offense’ stats with the bases loaded thanks to a two-RBI single making it 3-0.

Potomac got on the board against starter Yender Caramo in the bottom of the fourth. Isaac Ballou led off the inning with the Nationals’ second hit of the ballgame, a double into right field. After a Khayyan Norfork strikeout, Stephen Perez drove in Ballou with a single into right making it a 3-1 deficit for Potomac. Caramo bared down and got out of the frame with a 4-6-3 double play from John Wooten. Caramo worked through six innings before handing the ball off to Nick Green who worked a 1-2-3 seventh inning for his first save of the season.

Game one was dominated by the pitching of Reynaldo Lopez who made his first Advanced-A start on Thursday after staying in Florida after Spring Training for special instruction. Lopez is one of the most touted pitching prospects in the Nationals’ organization, and he showed why against the Rocks. Lopez pitched through five shutout frames, allowing only two hits in that stretch: one a two-out single to Dexter Kjerstad and the other a single off the bat of Dominique Taylor who was quickly erased on a double-play off the bat of Robert Pehl.

Potomac struck first in the first inning against starter Luis Rico. Rico gave up a one-out walk to Stephen Perez who would then swipe second base with two-outs. Another walk to Spencer Kieboom made it runners at first and second. Perez would then steal third before crossing home plate on a Wooten RBI single making it 1-0 Potomac. They would score a big insurance tally in the bottom of the sixth against reliever Matt Alvarez. Wooten singled to lead off the inning before stealing second and scoring on a Christopher Bostick triple over the head of Taylor in center. Alvarez got Brandon Miller to groundout to escape further damage.

Wilmington made things interesting with another late rally. Jack Lopez led off the seventh with a double, his fourth of the season. Mauricio Ramos then singled to move Lopez to third for Evans who doubled in his 15th run of the season to cut the deficit to one-run. With two men in scoring position, Potomac skipper Tripp Keister took a risk by bringing in the infield to cut down the run and the strategy worked to perfection as Taylor grounded out for the first out of the inning. After an intentional walk to Pehl to load the bases, Kenny Diekroeger struck out and Daniel Rockett grounded out to end the game.

Wilmington is back home on Friday to start a seven-game home stand. They open up a four-game series with the Lynchburg Hillcats tomorrow evening at 7:05 p.m. from Frawley Stadium. Jakob Junis takes the ball for Wilmington. Junis is 1-2 with a 3.18 ERA. Wilmington’s offense has to deal with Adam Plutko. Plutko is 1-2 with a 1.50 ERA for a struggling Lynchburg team that comes into Friday 9-19, the only team in the Carolina League without double-digit wins.

PEBBLES OF KNOWLEDGE:

The Blue Rocks’ offense continues to struggle with the bases loaded this season, but Logan Moon may have broken the team’s slump with his two-RBI single with the bases juiced in game two. His hit was just the second hit for current Blue Rocks with the bases loaded. The Rocks now have five hits total with the bases loaded, three of those belonging to Bubba Starling who currently resides in Northwest Arkansas with the Royals’ Double-A club. The Rocks are now 5-for-27 (.185) after entering the day batting .160 as a team with the bases juiced. They have driven in 15 runs in those bases loaded situations.

Rocks’ battery-mates just cannot seem to figure out how to stop opposing teams from running at will. Whether you put it on the pitchers or the catchers, the results have not been good this year. After going 0-for-4 in nabbing attempted base stealers on Thursday, Rocks’ catchers are now just 7-for-36 (.194) in throwing out base stealers. Last season, Rocks’ catchers threw out runners at a .354 clip (67-for-189).

Double-plays continue to nag Blue Rocks’ rallies. After Robert Pehl grounded into a double-play in both contests, the Rocks have now hit into 26 twin-killings in 2015. That total is tops in the League, five more than Winston-Salem who has the second-most in the Carolina League. Despite their struggles at avoiding the pitcher’s best friend, Wilmington’s offense is still the best in the League statistically. As a team, the Rocks are batting .265 with a .316 on-base percentage.

Zane Evans just will not stop hitting the baseball. Between Thursday’s two seven-inning games, Evans went 2-for-6 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored. He drove in the only run of game one for Wilmington. Evans is now batting .311 with eight doubles, four homers, and fifteen RBIs. Evans currently leads the Rocks in extra-base hits (12) and RBIs. He is tied for the team lead in hits with Frank Schwindel (28) and is second only to Mauricio Ramos in batting average (.328).

Thursday evening marked the first double-header of the season for the Blue Rocks. The last time the Blue Crew played two in a single day was back on August 30th of last year when the Rocks got swept by the Salem Red Sox. Their loss to Salem the very next officially eliminated the Blue Rocks from playoff contention. The Rocks were 3-6 last season in twin-bills.

THEY SAID IT:

Manager Brian Buchanan

“I’m not sure if it was rust [in game one] or [Reynaldo Lopez] not having any rust…he had a great arm. It’s a tough environment to play in, not playing for two days and then coming out and nobody is in the stands. I felt like a high school game. Once [Lopez] got out of there we had some good at-bats. We had a chance there in the seventh in the first game and we just couldn’t get the big hit. [Yender] Caramo came out and threw the ball well and [Nick Green] got the save for us. [Logan Moon] had some big hits. Double-headers are tough. We had a chance to win the first and then came out and got them in the second game.”

“With two-outs [and the bases loaded] Pehl had a good at-bat and then Moon hit that ball in the gap. Anytime you get a hit with the bases loaded, no matter what it is, you’ve got a chance to do some damage.”

“I think with Frank [Schwindel], [the problem with throwing out base runners is] he hasn’t really been back there. With Zane [Evans], we’ve just been working on trying to slow everything down. They need to learn that they’re better off throwing it down there and trying to make a good throw than trying to rush it and spray it all over the place. It’s a work in progress. They’re throwing the ball a little better but we need to continue to work on throwing guys out. Part of that is they’re not stealing off the catcher, they’re stealing off the pitcher too. The pitcher’s [have to] see that and realize they have to do a better job of holding them on. There’s only so much I can do in the dugout… This is the level where they have to try to control the running game; it doesn’t have to come from the dugout every time they want to do something.”

“[Caramo] did an excellent job. He left some pitches up, but for the most part he made the pitches when he needed to, got some ground balls and two double-plays that helped. He’s been doing it all year. It’s nice to be on the other end of [double plays]. We’ve got some middle-infielders who can turn double plays and [Mauricio] Ramos is probably the best third baseman in the League. If there are guys on base and we can get a ground ball, there’s a pretty good chance we’ll turn it.”

SUBJECT: Wildcats Advance to CACC Baseball Tournament Championship with 13-0 Victory over Chestnut Hill; Will Face Griffins Again in Championship
DATE: May 8, 2015
djl
NEW CASTLE, Del. - - After escaping a bases loaded jam in the top of the first inning the Wilmington University baseball team put up 13 runs on 16 hits to advance to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Championship with a 13-0 victory over third seeded Chestnut Hill on Friday afternoon at Wilson Field.
This is the fifth straight year the Wildcats (32-12) will take part in the CACC Tournament Championship game, winning three straight from 2010-13. The team lost in the CACC Tournament Championship game last year.
The Wildcats put four runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning after start Frank Samluk got out of a bases loaded jam with two outs, striking out Robert Slagle to end the threat.
Samluk got redemption in the bottom of the first, leading off the batting order with a single. Samluk roped a single into center that bounced past the center fielder, allowing Samluk to get all the way to third base. Christian Adorno walked and Josh Swirchak lined a double over the head of the left fielder. Adorno was waved around from first, avoiding the tag at home to make it 2-0 in favor of the Wildcats.
Sam Goines followed with an RBI single to right center, bringing in Swirchak for the 3-0 lead. Tyler Hawthorne finished the scoring off with an RBI infield single, bringing in Goines.
Samluk threw 44 pitches through the first two innings but settled down to battle through seven innings.
The score was still 4-0 in the bottom of the sixth when the Griffins went to the bullpen. The Wildcats got to the bullpen quickly, scoring two more runs in the bottom of the sixth, receiving an RBI from Adorno on a perfectly executed squeeze play, getting the bat on the ball even though the ball was in the dirt. Adorno and Samluk then executed a double steal with runners at first and third, as Samluk slid home for the 6-0 lead.
Samluk needed help to get through the top of the seventh inning, as the Griffins had two runners on without an out being recorded. Samluk picked up his fifth strikeout of the game for the first out before inducing a 6-3 double play to get out of the inning unscathed.

LSU CLINCHES SERIES WITH 8-2 VICTORY OVER MISSOURI

BATON ROUGE, La.— LSU first baseman Chris Chinea collected three RBI Saturday night, and freshman right-hander Alex Lange fired seven strong innings as the top-ranked Tigers captured the series over No. 21 Missouri in an 8-2 victory in Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field.

LSU improves to 42-8 on the season and 18-7 in conference play while Missouri falls to 28-23 overall and 14-12 in the SEC.

The Tigers were led on the mound by Lange (9-0) who fired seven innings, surrendering only one run on two hits, striking out eight and walking one.

“Alex Lange was certainly the story of the game tonight,” said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. “He had great command and displayed tremendous composure on the mound. Expectations have been so high for him since he threw his first pitch here at 95 mph back in February, and he again showed tonight why he’s one of the best pitchers in the nation.”

Missouri right-hander Tanner Houck (7-4) suffered the loss after pitching six innings, giving up five runs—four earned—on six hits, walking one and striking out three

“Houck is an outstanding young pitcher with a great future, and I was very pleased with our hitters’ approach against him,” Mainieri said. “We were able to extend him a bit early and drive up his pitch count, and we had some big swings that produced runs.”

The series finale is set for a 2 p.m. CT start Sunday in Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field. The game will be televised on the SEC Network. It will also be broadcast live on LSU Radio Network affiliates, including 98.1 FM in Baton Rouge. Fans can go to LSUsports.net for live stats and audio through the GeauxZone.

After reaching on an one-out single in the bottom of the second, LSU catcher Kade Scivicque scored on first baseman Chris Chinea’s two-out double to right field. Chinea advanced to third on a balk by Houck. LSU took a 2-0 lead after designated hitter Chris Sciambra tripled to right-centerfield, allowing Chinea to score from third.

In the bottom of the fourth, left fielder Jake Fraley reached after being hit by a pitch and scored when Chinea hit a two-run blast to left field to give LSU the 4-0 lead heading into the fifth.

Missouri shortstop Ryan Howard broke up the shutout in the top of the seventh when he sent a solo shot to left field, bringing the score to 5-1 in favor of LSU heading into the bottom of the seventh inning.

LSU extended the lead further in the seventh inning when Sciambra scored on right fielder Mark Laird’s one out single to left-center field. With two outs and runners in scoring position, third baseman Conner Hale ripped a single up the middle to score centerfielder Andrew Stevenson and Laird, giving LSU an 8-1 lead.

In the top of the ninth Missouri cut the lead to 8-2 against reliever Hunter Newman on pinch-hitter Case Munson’s single to left-centerfield.

Newman fired the final two innings, giving up one earned run on four hits, while walking one and recording two strikeouts.

Rider University 9, Quinnipiac University 0

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ—The Broncs swept Quinnipiac in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday.

With the victory in game one Rider (25-18, 13-4 MAAC) clinched a berth in the six-team MAAC Championship Tournament, held May 20-23 at Dutchess Stadium in Fishkill NY.

Quinnipiac (24-23, 14-9 MAAC) came into the doubleheader on a four game winning streak and having already clinched a playoff spot.

Rider is now 11-0 at home and has won five of six MAAC series this year. Rider has now won 10 of its last 11 games and 17 of the last 20.

“Clinching the playoff spot means the most,” said Rider head coach Barry Davis. “In the beginning of the year that is the first thing you want to do, to be in the tournament.”

In the first game Rider scored two runs in the fifth inning on two hits, including an RBI single by senior Greg Fazio (Far Hills/Ridge), to take a 4-0 lead. Fazio had two of Rider’s six hits.

Rider senior Zach Mawson (Magnolia, DE/Caesar Rodney) pitched into the seventh inning, allowing two runs on five hits for his fifth win. “Zack’s been good,” Davis said.

After allowing a first inning hit, Mawson faced the minimum batters from the second inning through the fifth.

Quinnipiac got on the board with a solo home run in the fifth inning and cut the lead to 4-2 in the seventh inning.

Rider sophomore Lee Lipinski (Glen Arm, MD/Calvert) singled and scored on a ground out RBI for a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning.

Parsons doubled and scored on an RBI single by junior Jordan Leinweber (Castle Rock, CO/Douglas County) to give Rider a 1-0 lead in the third inning.

In the second game Rider broke the game open with three runs in the fourth inning on three hits, including RBI singles by junior James Locklear (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) and red-shirt freshman Brian Uliana (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom), and a sacrifice fly by Thomas, to take a 7-0 lead.

“It helps the pitchers when you get up four runs, five runs, and they can attack the strike zone,” Davis said.

Locklear had three hits in the second game.

Rider freshman Nick Margevicius (North Royalton, Ohio/St. Ignatius) pitched a complete game shutout for his fifth win of the season. Margevicius struck out seven and walked just two while giving up four hits.

“When your teammates score nine runs for you it gives you a lot of confidence on the mound,” said the rookie lefty. “The offense did a good job today.”

Margevicius has allowed just three earned runs in his last 30 innings pitched. “I didn’t know that,” Margevicius said. “My stuff has been working.”

“That’s impressive,” Davis said. “He throws strikes and he can get ground balls. He’s been pretty consistent for us. We feel confidence when he’s out there. Hopefully he can keep it going.”

In the fifth inning Rider added two more runs on just one hit, four walks and three wild pitches to go up 9-0.

The Broncs scored three runs in the third inning on three hits, including an RBI triple by Locklear and an RBI single by senior Justin Thomas (Richboro, PA/Council Rock South), to take a 4-0 lead.

Senior Eric Strano (Robbinsville) hit an RBI single to give Rider a 1-0 lead in the second inning and had two of Rider’s 10 hits.

The third game of the series will be played Sunday at 12 noon.

Rocks Pitching Staff Strikes Out 15 in Mother’s Day Win Against Lynchburg
Wilmington moves to three games over .500 for first time this season

WILMINGTON, DE – Wilmington starting pitcher Alec Mills fanned a season-high eight batters on Sunday afternoon, guiding the Blue Rocks to a 4-2 win over the Lynchburg Hillcats. The Rocks improve to 16-13 overall, while the Hillcats drop to 10-21. Logan Moon produced a pair of RBIs for the Blue Crew, and Cam Gallagher returned from the disabled list to give the Rocks a couple hits himself.

Mills recorded his longest outing of the season on Sunday. The righty tossed six innings, giving up two runs on five hits and a walk, while striking out eight. Lynchburg starting pitcher Luis Lugo labored through three-plus frames, yielding three runs (two earned) and seven hits, fanning five.

The Blue Rocks jumped in front early thanks to a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. Ramon Torres led off the frame with a single, then Jack Lopez bunted for a hit, and on the play, Torres advanced to third base on an error by first baseman Nellie Rodriguez. After a Mauricio Ramos strike out, Zane Evans hit a line drive that third baseman Paul Hendrix could not field cleanly, which allowed Torres to score and Lopez to advance to second. Frank Schwindel would follow with a single that scored Lopez, making it 2-0 Wilmington.

The Blue Crew added to their lead in the home half of the fourth inning. Dominique Taylor smacked a double to open up the frame, then Gallagher singled to put runners on the corners. That base knock chased Lugo, and with D.J. Brown into the game, Moon greeted him with an infield single that brought Taylor home. Brown would induce a pop out and a double play to escape the inning without further damage.

Lynchburg finally got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth inning with a pair of runs. Ivan Castillo started the frame with a triple, his second in as many days. The very next batter, Clint Frazier produced a sacrifice fly that brought the score to 3-1. Bradley Zimmer would follow with a strikeout, and then Nellie Rodriguez crushed a solo home run to pull the Hillcats to within a run at 3-2.

The Rocks responded with another run of their own in the bottom of the inning. After two ground outs to start the frame, Gallagher roped a double, and Moon came through with a single that plated Gallagher and stretched the Wilmington lead to 4-2.

The Rocks and Hillcats conclude their four-game series on Monday, when they battle at Frawley Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m., and fans can listen to the broadcast on 89.7 WGLS-FM.

PEBBLES OF KNOWLEDGE:

For the second game in a row, the Blue Rocks pitching staff struck out at least 12 batters. On Saturday, Wilmington hurlers fanned 12 men, with seven coming from starting pitcher Luke Farrell, and five from piggybacker Cody Reed. Nick Green got one out in the game yesterday, and did not record a strikeout. On Sunday afternoon, starting pitcher Alec Mills fanned eight men, while Matt Alvarez got five Hillcats on strikes, and Estarlin Cordero struck out 2 for a total of 15 batters. Entering Sunday, Rocks pitchers led the Carolina League in strikeouts with 225.

Cam Gallagher returned from the disabled list on Sunday after being placed on the 7-day DL on May 1. Gallagher had a good return to the field, as he went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Before his trip to the disabled list, Gallagher was batting .200 in 17 games with a double and two RBIs. Wilmington made another roster move on Sunday, as they sent Kenny Diekroeger to Triple-A Omaha. Through 12 games this season, Diekroeger was batting .235 with a double and two RBIs.

Blue Rocks starter Alec Mills gave Wilmington his longest start of the season on Sunday, tossing six innings against the Hillcats. The previous season-long for Mills came in his first start of the season, which was on April 11 against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. Mills did not factor into the decision that day, while allowing a run on four hits with no walks and three strikeouts. That start was also the first and only time Mills has appeared in a contest on the road this season, with his last five starts coming at Frawley Stadium.

Zane Evans currently finds himself in a bit of a slump. With an 0-for-4 performance on Sunday afternoon, the second year Blue Rock is now hitless in his last 13 at-bats. His last knock came on May 7 in the second game of a doubleheader against the Potomac Nationals. Evans appears to be very comfortable hitting on the road, as he is batting .341 in 11 games away from Frawley Stadium, including three of his four home runs. He is only batting .224 in 16 games at home this season.

THEY SAID IT:

Manager Brian Buchanan:

“[Estarlin Cordero] has been doing a great job. His last outing, he kind of sprayed it around a little bit, but today he got right back in it. He was a little bit more under control. He’s got good stuff and he’s very deceptive.”

“[Matt Alvarez] was throwing his split and he was keeping the ball down and just making his pitches when he needed to. He didn’t reach out and elevate it. He did a really nice job.”

“I think in the sixth [Alec Mill’s] pitch count was getting up there a bit. He made a couple of bad pitches here and there, but for the most part he did a really good job. We need to pitch off our fastballs, so that’s one thing he needs to do. When he’s on he’s got a really good changeup and a curveball. If he can pitch off his fastball, which I think he did today, He can have success.”

“[Cam Gallagher] did a nice job. On that stolen base the guy got a pretty good jump. It’s not just the catchers, we’ve got to do a better job of holding them on. It’s good to have him back in the lineup and handling the staff.”

“[Logan Moon] has been swinging the bat well. He had a couple of hits today and a couple of RBIs [the last few days]. That was some nice insurance in the [sixth inning]. He’s been doing a nice job.”

“[Mauricio Ramos] will be fine. Last year, I think the first half he didn’t hit one homerun. In the second half, I think he ended up with seven. These guys need to learn how to hit. They need to stay with the same approach and the extra-base hits will come.”

“We’ve got all righties, it’s just the way the rotation has been. It’s nice for them to get some at-bats against a left-handed pitcher.”

Catcher Cam Gallagher:

“I was just trying to get my feet under me the first couple of innings. They got me right in there with that first foul ball in the first inning. It was nice to get that out of the way and just get back to the routine of the game.”

“It was a back spasm. It was kind of a weird, freak accident. I was running down the first-base line and I got back up to throw on a groundball and just kind of landed awkwardly and pain shot up my whole back. It was pretty painful, but thank God it’s over.”

“No [I wasn’t working on batting while injured]. That actually probably hurt the most. I wasn’t doing much swinging because it has a lot to do with the lower back. First three at-bats today I was trying to not do too much, just trying to put the bat on the ball and let the pitcher dictate [the at-bat]. Just wanted to barrel it up and see where it goes.”

“Last year, I think I threw 40 percent out… This year I’ve been a little bit inconsistent on my throws. Some of the runners are stealing on the pitchers, but it’s not too big of a problem. It’s something we’ll work on…but they’ll get better.”

“Mills was throwing a lot of strikes. His slider was really good today. His curveball was getting over [a lot more]. Overall, he was throwing a lot of strikes down in the zone and [you’ll usually have a good outing] when you do that. [Alvarez] was a lot better today. He was getting ahead of hitters and, kind of like Mills, once you get ahead, a lot better things can happen than when you fall behind. [Cordero] keeps the ball down and throws a lot of strikes. He’s nasty from lefties and righties. Like I said, when you get ahead a lot of good things are going to happen.”

Richie Refner got the complete game win for the Rams thanks to 10 strikeouts as they defeated St. Thomas More Ravens by a 5-3 score. Refner allowed no earned runs on three hits and one walk over seven innings. Andrew Kleimann had 2 hits and 2 RBIs for Dickinson while Caleb Todd chipped in two hits.

Stephen Jackowicz had a hit and 2 stolen bases for the Ravens.

Early boost from Anthony Lozada helps the Glasgow Dragons get past Conrad High School, 6-2

Glasgow built an early lead against Conrad High School, scoring four runs in the first inning, en route to a 6-2 win on Tuesday at Conrad High School.

The Dragons scored in the first on an RBI single by Anthony Lozada, an RBI single by Victor Norris, an RBI single by Pedro Custodio, and a squeeze bunt by Jack McCann.

Corey Davis racked up two RBIs on two hits for Glasgow. He homered in the fourth inning and singled in the sixth inning.

Aaron Coates kept contact to a minimum, striking out 12 Conrad batters. Coates allowed one earned run, four hits and three walks over six innings.

Brett Nowell took the loss for Conrad. He allowed six runs in 3 1/3 innings, walked three and struck out none.

Michael Harris had a RBI double in the fourth inning for Conrad. Anthony Madonna stroked a double to left field to lead off the bottom of the 7th inning for Conrad, eventually scoring on a sarafice fly by Brett Nowell to finish out the scoring for Conrad.

Caravel and Appoquinimink both had scoring chances on Tuesday, but it was Caravel that was able to capitalize on them as it pulled out a 3-1 win.
Appoquinimink had five hits compared with Caravel three, but Appoquinimink stranded six runners on base.
Caravel held off Appoquinimink, as Appoquinimink was unable to overcome a three-run fourth inning deficit.
Appoquinimink scored one run in the sixth on an RBI single by Ryan Steckline. Despite its efforts, Appoquinimink couldn't finish the comeback.
Brandon Fraley recorded the win for Caravel. He allowed one run over seven innings. Fraley struck out 11, walked three and gave up five hits.
Emir Garrett took the loss for Appoquinimink. He lasted seven innings, walked one, struck out seven, and allowed three runs.
The lead stayed with Caravel after the first, when it scored one run on a sacrifice fly by Adam Weber.
Caravel increased its lead with two runs in the fourth. Dexter Marchan's single got things going, scoring Weber.
In the sixth inning, Appoquinimink pushed across its only run of the day on an RBI single by Steckline. Both R. Steckline and M. Alexander went 2 for 3 with Alexander scoring after a double in the sixth for Appo.

Newark Charter's 11 run first was enought for the win. Kevin Buglio was 2-3 with 3 rbi's. Nic Krusko doubled and Ryan Fredd got his first varsity hit as they defeated Christiana 13-3. Dylan Sparklin was 2-3 for Christiana and Akib Choudhury doubled .

DAPSS jumped off to a 3-2 lead in the first inning on Stefon Saunders lead-off double and RBIs from Gage Wolfe and Trevor Smethurst to pace the Eagles to a 10-2 win over the Highlanders of McKean. Live stats will be available all weekend at first pitch here.

SCOUTING THE WEEKENDRider comes in as the top team in the conference, having won 11 of 13 games and sitting at 12-1 at home this season. Justin Thomas leads the team in hitting at .307 among hitters with qualifying at-bats, and is also tops on the club with four homers and 35 RBI's. Eric Thomas has a 0.77 ERA out of the bullpen in 24 appearances.

These teams have met 49 times, with Rider winning 26 and MU 23. Monmouth has taken the last six, including a May sweep at home last season.

HUNT'S NO-HITTERLast Saturday, senior RHP threw a no-hitter in a 1-0 win over Saint Peter's, the first for a Hawk since current Baltimore Oriole Brad Brach did it in 2007 against LIU. He faced just 23 batters, and struck out five while walking just two on 90 pitches. This week, he was named the Louisville Slugger Player of the Week by the Collegiate Baseball News, as well as earning MAAC and ECAC Pitcher of the Week. He was nominated for the Capital One Impact Performance of the Week on ESPN.com, and was leading the vote after 9,000 votes were submitted on Wednesday evening.

600 CAREER WINS
On March 28, in the first win over Manhattan, MU head coach Dean Ehehalt earned his 600th career win. Ehehalt, the 22nd year head man at Monmouth, picked up the win when Grant Lamberton worked out a bases loaded walk in the 13th inning. Freshman Mike Brambilla grabbed his first ever collegiate win in Ehehalt's 600th. Asbury Park Press columnist Steve Edelson wrote a piece on Coach Ehehalt following the win, which can be found here.

CANCELLATIONS

As many teams deal with in the Northeast, Monmouth has had several games washed out due to weather. A full weekend of games at James Madison was eliminated in February, and the Hawks had five straight games cancelled due to weather prior to the series with Manhattan. All four games against Wagner on the weekend of March 21 were not played, and the 3/25 contest vs. FDU was halted in the bottom of the third. The game on 4/22 vs. Lafayette was also stopped in the bottom of the second as a result of lightning and heavy rain.

GAETANO'S HOT STREAK
Sophomore OF Chris Gaetano had a huge weekend in Richmond, going 8-18 (.444) in the four games. He put up a slugging percentage of .833, including his first career home run and triple against Minnesota. He scored six runs and drove in five in Monmouth's three win-weekend, scoring the winning run against JMU on Dan Shea's walk-off double.Gaetano currently leads Monmouth with three home runs.

WEEKLY HONORS
Monmouth has had three pitchers earn conference weekly honors this season, with freshman Matt Littrell and redshirt freshman Justin Andrews being named Rookie of the Week and senior T.J. Hunt earning Pitcher of the Week. Hunt also received awards from the ECAC and NJCBA last week as Pitcher of the Week following his 6.2 shutout innings to earn the win over VCU on 3/13. Ryan Bailey was also named conference and ECAC Player of the Week after a 7-10, two home run weekend at Niagara. Hunt earned the honors again after his no-hitter last week.

MONMOUTH ON ESPN3
On February 12, Monmouth Athletics released a 24-game spring schedule of games to be aired on ESPN3, including 12 MU baseball games. Saturday's games will be the last Monmouth-produced ESPN3 broadcasts of this year.

UP NEXTThe 2015 conference tournament begins on Wednesday, May 20 in Fishkill, N.Y. Monmouth's first game will depend on seeding.

Torres’ Second Walk-Off Of The Year Gives Rocks Win Over Potomac
Ramon Torres Singled Home The Winning Run In The Tenth To Even Up This Three-Game Series

WILMINGTON, DE – After two of their most painful losses of the season, the Blue Rocks were able to rebound on the back of a good start by Jakob Junis and a walk-off single from Ramon Torres in the tenth to defeat the Potomac Nationals 3-2 on Wednesday night. Junis was coming off one of his worst outing of the season, and recovered with his longest outing of the year as he gave up two runs in seven innings. For Torres, it was his second walk-off hit of the year and the third walk-off win for the Blue Rocks in 2015.

Dominique Taylor led off the tenth with his first hit of the ballgame, a liner that dropped into right field. Logan Moon then stepped up, looking to move Taylor into scoring position with a bunt, but Moon could not get it down against reliever Jake Johansen who came in for starter Nick Pivetta to start the seventh inning. Dex Kjerstad picked up his teammate with a single over the head of shortstop Stephen Perez to put the winning run at second. Then Torres came up and, not trying to do too much, grounded a single up the box and into centerfield allowing Taylor to come around from second with the winning run.

The Rocks were down 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth when Jack Lopez decided to use his speed to his advantage, bunting his way on with a single to give Wilmington a leadoff base runner. Mauricio Ramos, who has struggled with run production this season, then smacked his first triple of the season into the right-centerfield gap scoring Lopez and tying the score at one apiece. After a Frank Schwindel strikeout, Robert Pehl stepped up and grounded one to Perez at short. Perez checked the runner back to the bag at third and made the throw onto first, but John Wooten could not corral a bad throw at first. The ball trickled away from Wooten, allowing Pehl to reach and Ramos to score from third giving Wilmington a 2-1 lead.

Potomac jumped out to the lead early against Junis. Isaac Ballou, coming off a big night on Tuesday, singled to lead off the game. Ballou quickly collected his seventh steal of the season off of Junis and Cam Gallagher, then moved to third base on a Christopher Bostick fly out to right. Another fly out, this one off the bat of Perez, would allow Ballou to tag from third and score the opening salvo of the ballgame. Potomac later tied the score at two in the seventh. Junis was looking for his longest outing of the season, when he gave up a one-out double to Wooten. Junis got a strikeout of Drew Ward, but Khayyan Norfork would even the score with a two-out RBI single into right.

Estarlin Cordero ended up getting the win out of the bullpen as he pitched a 1-2-3 tenth inning. Cordero moves to 2-0 on the year. The Rocks and Nationals will play the rubber game of this three-game series from Frawley Stadium on Thursday evening. Wilmington sends out the piggyback combination of Cody Reed and Luke Farrell to the mound, as the two, along with reliever Nick Green, led the Rocks to a 5-3 win over Lynchburg in their last outing. The Nationals counter with Lucas Giolito who got roughed up in his first Advanced-A appearance, giving up five runs in 4.1 innings against the Frederick Keys. First pitch from Wilmington is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.

PEBBLES OF KNOWLEDGE:

Jake Junis turned in his longest outing of the season as he went seven innings in the victory. For Wilmington, he is the third pitcher to go at least seven innings in a game and the second in as many nights. Yender Caramo went seven innings on Tuesday in the Rock’s 2-0 loss at the hands of the P-Nats. Previously, the only Wilmington hurler to make it through seven innings was Eric Skoglund who went seven innings on April 29 against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, a game which the Rocks would lose and Skoglund would take a no-decision in.

Their walk-off winner on Wednesday was the third of that variety for the Blue Rocks this season. The first time the Rocks were able to walk-off on an opponent was on April 16 against Frederick when Bubba Starling doubled home Jack Lopez for the win. The Rocks did it again on April 28 when Torres was also the hero. He singled in Logan Moon to give Wilmington a 3-2 win. Torres is now batting .267 this season, with 31 hits and 5 RBIs.

With their first run in the fourth inning, the Blue Rocks snapped their longest scoreless innings streak of the year at 20 innings, dating back to Monday night against Lynchburg when their final score of the game came in the fourth inning with no outs. The Rocks took their fourth shutout of the season last night to extend the streak to 17 innings, before it was finally broken up at 20 innings by the Mauricio Ramos RBI triple. The last time the Rocks had scored a run was on a Frank Schwindel hit by pitch with the bases loaded.

Despite the win, the Rocks continue to struggle with the double play ball. The Rocks grounded into three more double plays on Wednesday night, extending their unfortunate league lead in the category. The Rocks have now grounded into 36 double plays this season, 12 more than the next closest team (Winston Salem – 24). Wilmington is more than doubling up the team with the lowest number in that category (Salem – 15).

THEY SAID IT:

Manager Brian Buchanan

“(The team) did a great job. It seems like every time you come in here, it’s the same thing. The pitching did great, we got some good hits, timely hitting, (and) the defense was outstanding.”

“(Jakob Junis) did a great job. He threw some good changeups, some good curveballs, and he was putting his fastball where he wanted ittonight. That’s what you want your starting pitching to do, keep us in the game. I think he deserves better than a no-decision, but that’s the way it goes.”

“(Robinson Yambati) threw the ball well. (Pitching coach Steve) Luebber has been working with him in the bullpen after he got hurt after he felt something in his forearm. He looked real goodtonight. He did a nice job.”

“(Back-to-back games where the starting pitcher throws seven innings) is nice…Our bullpen threw a ton of innings two nights ago, so it’s good to have the starters go deep in the game. It helped us out.”

“Someone like (Rafael Furcal) being around the clubhouse, I think (the players) saw how he worked and saw how he went about his business. That’s how you need to do things to get to the big leagues. His work ethic was outstanding in the cage hitting ground balls, and in (batting practice) he had a plan. I think it’s important for those guys to see how an established big leaguer goes about his business.”

Pitcher Jakob Junis

“I faced (Ballou) last time a lot last year. We battled a lot, (Ballou) knows I have a changeup and just hit a changeup for a single. (Potomac) did a good job of moving him over with a couple of fly balls and he ended up scoring. After that I just threw strikes, had all of my pitches going for strikes and got outs.”

“(Pitching six or seven innings) takes a load off the bullpen, that’s for sure. That’s my job as a starter is to throw as deep into the game as possible. (I have to) try to give the team a chance to win even if I end up getting beat up a little bit, (I just) keep battling.”

“I am defiantly not a fan of walks. I have always kind of made it a point, that even down 3-0 (in the count) try to attack the strike zone, (you) never know what could happen. At least make them put it into play and see what happens, don’t just give them a free ride.”

“(The defense helps me out a lot as) they can cover some ground in the outfield and those guys can kick it into the infield too. Cam (Gallagher) behind the plate (is) very solid. We have a pretty good team.”

“(I didn’t think about the wind) I just pitched my game. There was that one hit, in the second or third inning (that was) crushed to left field, probably would have been out (of the park) anywhere else. I just tipped my cap and said thank you, (I was) glad that stayed in the park. I just kept on pitching, didn’t think much of (the wind).”

SOUTH CAROLINA RALLIES FOR 10-7 WIN OVER LSU

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina erupted for eight runs in the sixth and seventh innings Thursday night to erase a four-run deficit and defeat top-ranked LSU, 10-7, at Carolina Stadium.

LSU dropped to 44-9 overall and 19-8 in the SEC. The Tigers hold a half-game lead over Vanderbilt (19-9) in the overall SEC standings and a one-game lead over Texas A&M (18-9) in the SEC Western Division race.

South Carolina improved to 32-22 overall and 13-15 in the SEC with Thursday’s win.

The teams resume the series at 7 p.m. CT Friday in a game that will be televised by ESPNU. Friday’s game can be heard on the LSU Sports Radio Network, and live stats and audio are available at www.LSUsports.net.

With the game tied 6-6 in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Gamecocks took advantage of five walks issued by the Tigers to score four runs. Rightfielder Elliott Caldwell, designated hitter Alex Destino and catcher Hunter Taylor each drew bases-loaded walks, and third baseman DC Arendas added a sacrfice fly to give South Carolina a four-run cushion.

LSU reliever Jake Godfrey (7-1) was charged with the loss, as he started the seventh inning and allowed four runs on one hit with four walks and no strikeouts.

South Carolina reliever Reed Scott (2-3) was credited with the win, allowing one run on three hits in three innings with one walk and one strikeout.

LSU starter Jared Poche’ worked the first six innings and was charged with six runs – five earned – on nine hits with no walks and three strikeouts. South Carolina stater Jack Wynkoop worked 5.1 innings and surrended six runs – five earned on 11 hits with no walks and two strikeouts.

“It’s disappointing, because we had a great offensive effort tonight against an excellent pitcher in Wynkoop,” said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. “I was really proud of what we did at the plate, but unfortunately it wasn’t enough. We have to move past this loss and look forward to tomorrow with an opportunity to achieve some significant goals.”

LSU first baseman Chris Chinea highlighted the Tigers’ 15-hit output with a 4-for-5 effort, including a homer, a double and three RBI.

Second baseman Max Schrock launched a solo homer in the bottom of the first inning to give South Carolina a 1-0 lead, but LSU tied the game in the top of the second on Chinea’s solo dinger, his 10th home run of the season.

LSU erupted for four runs on five hits in the fourth inning against Wynkoop to take a 5-1 lead. Leftfielder Jake Fraley produced an RBI single, designated hitter Danny Zardon ripped a two-run double and rightfielder Mark Laird lifted a sacrfice fly to highlight the uprising.

The Gamecocks narrowed the gap to 5-2 in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double by catcher Hunter Taylor, but LSU answered with a run in the top of the fifth on Chinea’s RBI double.

South Carolina tied the contest with four runs in the sixth against Poche’ – rightfielder Elliott Caldwell contributed an RBI groundout, Taylor lined a run-scoring single and third baseman DC Arendas unloaded a two-run homer, his third dinger of the season.

Offensive Struggles Continue As Rocks Drop Series Opener In Lynchburg
Alec Mills’ Poor Sixth Makes All The Difference

LYNCHBURG, VA – After winning the last two games of their series with Potomac, the Blue Rocks were once again unable to complete a three-game winning streak as they fell in the series opener with Lynchburg 4-1. The Rocks took an early lead against starter Luis Lugo, but he would settle down, at one point even setting down 10 hitters in a row. After a rough outing his last time out against Wilmington, Lugo rebounded with a win to move his record to 1-2 on the season.

The game was tied 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth, when Lynchburg got their first two runners on via a hit by pitch to Clint Frazier and a base hit from Bradley Zimmer. Not wasting any time, Nellie Rodriguez struck a double pastLogan Moon in left scoring both runners and giving Lynchburg their first lead of the game, 3-1. A passed ball by Cam Gallagher would allow Rodriguez to advance to third, but Rocks’ starter Alec Mills bared down to get consecutive strikeouts before handing it off to Matt Alvarez out of the bullpen. Alvarez walked Mike Papi, but followed it up with a groundout off the bat of James Roberts to escape further damage.

Wilmington looked poised for a big offensive game in the early going. After getting to Lugo early in their last go at the left-hander on May 10, the Rocks did more of the same on Friday. Ramon Torres led off the game with a double pulled down the third base line. A one-out walk from Mauricio Ramos and a single from Frank Schwindel loaded the bases for Robert Pehl. Pehl did not need the benefit of contact to give his team the lead. Pehl worked a walk and forced in Torres with the game’s opening run. Lugo managed to walk the tight-rope and get out of the inning without any further damage thanks to a strikeout of Gallagher and a groundout from Dominique Taylor.

The Hillcats added some insurance in the seventh inning off of Alvarez, though Alvarez did not get any help from the defense behind him. The speedy Ivan Castillo laid a bunt down the third base line to start the inning, and Ramos threw the ball away from Schwindel at first allowing Castillo to move up all the way to third. After a walk to Luigi Rodriguez, Frazier put the bat on the ball and got himself a productive out. Frazier flew out to Dex Kjerstad in right, which enabled Castillo to trot in from third to make it 4-1 Lynchburg. Kjerstad’s strong throw almost nabbed Castillo, who was jogging home, but he just slid in under the tag.

The Rocks will try to even this series up as the two teams are back in action on Saturday. Royals’ prospect Eric Skoglund takes the ball for Wilmington. Skoglund is trying to bounce back from his last outing against Lynchburg where he went just 3.2 innings before being lifted. He will face Mitch Brown who also struggled in that game against Wilmington but, like Skoglund, took a no decision. First pitch from Lynchburg, Virginia is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

PEBBLES OF KNOWLEDGE:

Wilmington’s offense was seemingly non-existent again on Friday evening. After a series against Potomac in which the Rocks could muster just four runs, they managed just a single tally against Lynchburg pitching on Friday. The Rocks have now scored just five runs combined in their last four contests. Over the last week, the Blue Rocks have been shutout twice, doubling their previous season total in the span of seven games. A part of the hardship continues to be the Rocks struggles with the double play. The Rocks grounded into two more double plays on Friday to bring their season total to a staggering 39, by far tops in the Carolina League.

Along with the offense’s inability to avoid the double play, they have also shown an inability to hit with the bases loaded. After going 0-for-2 with the bases loaded in the first inning, including a Cam Gallagher strikeout with one-out, Wilmington is now hitting just .156 (5-for-32) with the sacs full this season. What’s worse about this stat is that they have only driven in 20 runs in these situations, a quarter of which belong to Bubba Starling who now resides in Double-A. Furthermore, the Rocks are also struggling with runners in scoring position in general. Over their last four contests, the Rocks are batting just .125 (2-for-16) with runners in scoring position.

With their loss on Friday night, the Blue Rocks were once again unable to complete their first three-game winning streak of the season. Despite being three games above .500 at several points this year, the Rocks have not been able to string together wins with great consistency. Wilmington has now had two-game winning streaks on seven different occasions through the first month-and-a-half of the season, but are still trying to find that elusive third win. The explanation for this trend may be found in the Rocks struggles to open series strong. With the loss on Friday, Wilmington is now just 3-8 in the first game of series, compared to 8-1 in the last game of series.

If there is one positive the Wilmington offense can draw on a day-in and day-out basis, it’s the consistency of Frank Schwindel. Despite another offensive struggle on Friday, Schwindel continues to rake in the middle of the Rocks’ order. Schwindel went 3-for-4 on Friday, his tenth multi-hit game of the season. He is now batting over .300 (.302) for the first time since the start of the season, and he is leading the team in hitting. He is also leading all current Blue Rocks with 16 RBIs and he is tied for second in the league with 59 total bases.

THEY SAID IT:

Manager Brian Buchanan

“We let them off the hook in the first inning. I think if we get a couple of runs there it’s a different ballgame. We couldn’t get any runs across on (Luis Lugo0 and then I think we started to get a little too aggressive on him. I think we were trying too hard. We swung at some balls that were up. We had a couple of chances there later and just couldn’t get the big hit. It’s one of those games where I think we’re trying to do too much.”

“(Alec Mills] hit Frazier and then kind of left some pitches up and they put good swings on them. He threw the ball well. He gave us a chance to win the game and we just couldn’t push any runs across for him.”

“(Matt Alvarez) did a good job. Obviously, you don’t want to see relievers come in an walk guys but he calmed down a little bit, got on track, and made pitches when he needed to and got out of it.”

“You want to start running guys (to avoid the double play) but then the situation doesn’t call for it or you don’t have the guys on base who are (fast). It’s kind of a catch-22. You run him and he gets thrown out and you’re wondering why you ran him. Then you don’t run him and Torres hits that ball to second base. If he’s going then it might be a base hit. The double play hurt us but we’ll just keep working at it.”

Designated Hitter Robert Pehl

“(Our struggles) are frustrating because it’s the hardest hit to get in baseball, the one that brings the guy in. I feel like we’ve been taking good at-bats, we’re just missing that (big hit). Once someone takes that at-bat and gets it done, I think it will be like a chain reaction and we’ll find more success.”

“I haven’t seen (double plays) as much as we do it. It’s crazy, honestly, and I don’t really know what to think of it. It’s just one of those things. It’s kind of tough luck sometimes and other times a bad approach. It’s just weird how many we’ve hit into.”

“I think we have too many talented, good hitters on this team to let (the lack of runs) snowball. I think we’ll be fine. It’s always important to not let these things pile up. We’ll just come out and try to play the best baseball we can everyday.”

Blue Rocks Fall in Rubber Game Against Lynchburg Hillcats
Offense goes quiet in series finale heading into off-day

LYNCHBURG, VA – The Wilmington Blue Rocks had a chance to get to four games above .500 for the first time this season on Sunday, but could not get the victory to do it, as they fell to the Lynchburg Hillcats by a final score of 7-2. The Blue Rocks drop to 19-17 on the season, while the Hillcats improve to 15-23. Dexter Kjerstad produced a run-scoring triple, while Bradley Zimmer led the way offensively for Lynchburg, tallying three hits and two runs scored on the afternoon.

Rocks starter Luis Rico was the loser on Sunday. The lefty tossed 4.2 innings, allowing four runs (three earned), five hits, and three walks, while striking out six. His counterpart, Lynchburg’s Dace Kime, picked up the win. Kime went five innings, yielding a run on three hits and two walks, fanning four in the process.

Wilmington got on the board first in the top half of the second inning. Kenny Diekroeger began the frame with an infield single, then stole his way to second base. Dominique Taylor tried to bunt him to third, but Diekroeger got caught between bases and was eventually tagged out, while Taylor made it to second base on the play. After a Cam Gallagher ground out, Saturday’s hero, Kjerstad, laced a triple that scored Taylor, making it 1-0 Blue Rocks.

In the bottom of the third inning, Lynchburg took the lead back. Ivan Castillo singled with one out in the frame, then Luigi Rodriguez reached on an infield hit, and Castillo and Rodriguez moved up to third and second respectively because of a throwing error by Ramon Torres. With two men in scoring position, Clint Frazier produced a two-RBI double that gave Lynchburg the lead at 2-1. Later, with Frazier at third base, Nellie Rodriguez came through with a sacrifice fly that pushed the Hillcats lead to 3-1.

Lynchburg got some two-out magic in the bottom of the fifth inning to extend their lead. Zimmer singled with the bases empty and nobody out, which spelled the end of Rico’s day. Nellie Rodriguez would then single, and as Zimmer tried to advance to third on the play, Kjerstad’s throw to the bag got away, allowing Zimmer to score, giving the Hillcats a 4-1 advantage.

After a scoreless top of the sixth inning, Lynchburg added yet another insurance run in the bottom of the frame. James Roberts reached on an error by third baseman Robert Pehl, then stole second base to get into scoring position. Juan De La Cruz followed with a single, scoring Roberts and making it 5-1 Hillcats.

Lynchburg added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to cap their scoring. The Hillcats loaded the bases with nobody out thanks to two singles and a hit-batsman. Joe Sever would then single to drive in two runners, pushing the Hillcats edge to 7-1.

The Rocks got a run back in the top of the ninth inning. With Jack Lopez at third base with one out, Diekroeger brought him in with a sacrifice fly to bring the score to 7-2, but the Rocks would get no closer than that.

Wilmington has a scheduled off-day on Monday, and the Blue Crew are back in action on Tuesday evening against the Winston-Salem Dash at Frawley Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m., and fans can listen to the broadcast on 89.7, WGLS-FM.

PEBBLES OF KNOWLEDGE:

Despite the fact that the Lynchburg Hillcats have the worst record in the Carolina League at 15-23, the Blue Rocks cannot seem to figure out their Northern Division foes. With the loss on Sunday, Wilmington is now 3-4 against Lynchburg this season. If not for a Dexter Kjerstad pinch-hit three-run homer on Saturday night that led Wilmington to a 4-2 win, the Rocks would have gotten swept by the ‘Cats, as they lost the series opener by a score of 4-1. The Northern Division as a whole has been a bit of a struggle for the Blue Crew this season, as they now sit one game under .500 against CL North opponents at 11-12, compared to the 8-5 record they hold against Southern Division teams.

Despite his team dropping two of three over the weekend, outfielder Dexter Kjerstad had himself a strong series for the Rocks. Kjerstad came up clutch in Saturday night’s 4-2 win, coming off the bench to launch a go-ahead three-run homer in the top of the ninth inning. In his very next at-bat (his first one on Sunday afternoon), Kjerstad produced a run-scoring triple that gave Wilmington their only lead of the game at 1-0. During the series, Kjerstad went 2-for-8 with a home run, a triple, four RBIs, and a run scored.

Kenny Diekroeger enjoyed a cup of coffee at Triple-A Omaha recently before returning to Wilmington. In two games with the Storm Chasers, Diekroeger went 1-for-6 with a double and a run scored. Sunday marked his first game back at the Advanced-A level, and it was a good one. The infielder went 2-for-3 with one RBI and his first two stolen bases of the season. In 12 games with Wilmington this year, Diekroeger is batting .235 with a double, two RBIS, and two runs scored.

Yet another Blue Rock took his talents to the Double-A Northwest Arkansas Naturals on Sunday, as right-handed pitcher Luke Farrell became the latest Rock to get the call. Farrell was 2-0 with a 3.03 ERA in seven games (three starts) with Wilmington before his promotion. He also leaves as the team leader in strikeouts with 41, one in front of Jakob Junis who has 40. Farrell played briefly with the Naturals a season ago, as he was 0-1 with a 6.17 ERA in two starts with Northwest Arkansas in 2014.

THEY SAID IT:

Manager Brian Buchanan:

“We had some good at-bats. It was just kind of a sluggish game all around. It felt (like) we didn’t have a whole lot of energy out there today, and I guess it’s because (today was) a day game after a night game…It was kind of a weird game. I think we had decent at-bats, but we just couldn’t get anything going.”

“We’ve made some errors in the past, but they really haven’t cost us, and all three of those errors (in today’s game) cost us some runs, especially early on when (Ramon) Torres let that ball get away from him and had a bad throw to first. That kind of opened the floodgates, and after that we couldn’t really get anything going. I don’t think (Luis) Rico…(he) wasn’t as crisp as he was (in previous starts) but he didn’t get hit real hard. They had some pretty good placements as far as hits are concerned, and the errors just killed us.”

“With the day off tomorrow, (the bullpen) would have had four or five days of rest, so we got (Estarlin) Cordero in there and (Robinson) Yambati in there to just get an inning of work.”

“(The off-day) is nice. For the most part, we’ve played well, and we’ve pitched well, and we’ve played defense well. Today was obviously not a good day, but the days off are always welcome, and hopefully we can rest up tomorrow and come back ready.”

Infielder Kenny Diekroeger:

“Triple-A was a great experience, but…it’s always good to start off (a game) with a hit. To get a hit like the swinging bunt…you know luck is on your side, at least for that at-bat. (Dace Kime) was slow to the plate, (Manager Brian Buchanan) gave me the green light, and I was lucky to (steal a base) twice, so it was a good day.”

“(I want to steal more) for sure. I definitely have the speed for it, and I’m definitely working on trying to steal more, (and) just balancing putting in the work. You’re going to make mistakes, but also not…compromising the team and screwing up to where you’re going to cost your team a win. As we move forward, I’ll definitely be more aggressive on the bases, and I’ll be trying to steal more.”

“(Spending time in Triple-A) was great. I saw the last step before the big leagues, and there are a lot of big-leaguers on (the Storm Chasers). Casey Kotchman is one, Joe Blanton is another, and I was able to talk to (Kotchman) for a while about what it’s like. Just seeing how everybody in that level carries themselves, how hitters extend at-bats…they’re really selective about the pitches they swing at. The pace of the play (was interesting). It was great being up there, so I’m really fortunate.”

“It’s more how you prepare (that determines getting to the higher levels), how you do in…pregame batting practice and all that. At the end of the day, it’s about performing down here. I felt good up there…I felt comfortable, (and) I know I can do well up there, so that was good for me. It gives me the confidence that once I get up there, I’ll be able to do well…it’s just about doing well down here, and hopefully getting the chance to be up there someday.”

“(Lots of travel) is the minor league life…(it took) two days getting there and coming back. Two full days of being in the airport and on airplanes. I can’t complain, I’m playing pro baseball.”

MONMOUTH BASEBALL FALLS TO MARIST 10-3 IN MAAC TOURNAMENTHawks compete in ninth consecutive conference postseason

FISHKILL, N.Y
. – Junior Dan Shea (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum) was one of three Hawks with two hits, which included a home run, but No. 5 seed Monmouth’s season came to a close with a 10-3 defeat to No. 6 Marist in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament on Thursday afternoon at Dutchess Stadium.

Shea, who went 2-for-4, joined Grant Lamberton (Newark, Del./Salesianum) and Chris Gaetano (Madison Township, Pa./Scranton Prep) with two hits each on the day, while Shaine Hughes (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) added a pair of RBI.

Following a lead-off walk, Marist’s Graham McIntire connected on a two-run homer to left center off Monmouth starter T.J. Hunt (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) to give the Red Foxes a 2-0 edge, while a pair of doubles in the third frame pushed Marist in front 5-0 through three innings.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Monmouth got consecutive one-out singles from Robbie Alessandrine (Sewell, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) and Lamberton, in front of Hughes’ two-run double down the left field line, pulling the Hawks within 5-2.

The Red Foxes notched three runs in the sixth inning to increase their lead to 8-2, as reliever Jeff Paglione (Mantua, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) surrendered an RBI groundout with the bases loaded, while an infield single, coupled with an error, allowed two more runs for Marist.

Monmouth climbed within 8-3 in the home half of the sixth on Shea’s solo home run to right field, his third of the season.

Joey Aiola answered with a solo shot to right off Chris McKenna (Pine Beach, N.J./Toms River South) in the top of the eighth to give Marist a 9-3 edge.

Hunt (5-5) was saddled with the loss for Monmouth, tossing 5.1 innings, allowing seven runs on six hits, with five walks and four strikeouts. Paglione, who entered with two runners on base in the sixth inning, surrendered an unearned run in two-thirds of an inning of work.

McKenna worked 2.0 frames for the Hawks, allowing one run, while Anthony Ciavarella (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) surrendered an unearned run without a hit, and two strikeouts in the ninth for Monmouth.

Monmouth (22-24), in its ninth straight conference tournament appearance and 18th league postseason overall, scattered 11 hits, but stranded seven runners on the day.

Rich Vrana (5-4) tossed a complete game for the Red Foxes to earn the win with five strikeouts and no walks.

Mills Fans 10, But Offense Sputters as Rocks Fall To Dash
Wilmington shut out for fifth time this season in series finale

WILMINGTON, DE – The Blue Rocks offense could not crack the scoreboard on Thursday night, and the team dropped the series finale against the Winston-Salem Dash by a final score of 2-0. The Rocks fall to 21-18 on the season, while the Dash improve to 17-24. Starting pitcher Alec Mills notched a career-high 10 strike outs, but took the loss while going five innings, allowing both runs of the night to Winston-Salem.

The Dash took the lead in the top of the third inning, scoring what turned out to be the only run they would need. After Nolan Earley flied out to begin the frame, Cleuluis Rondon struck out, but the third strike got away from Cam Gallagher behind the plate, and Rondon made it to first base safely. T.J. Williams would follow with a single that advanced Rondon to third base, then Adam Engel produced a sacrifice fly that brought in Rondon and gave the Dash a 1-0 lead.

Winston-Salem added to their lead in the top of the fourth, and the inning ended in controversy as well. The Dash got three straight singles to open the frame from Trey Michalczewski, Chris Jacobs, and Omar Narvaez to load the bases with no outs. After a Keenyn Walker strike out, Earley produced a run-scoring single to push the Dash lead to 2-0. Rondon would then ground a ball to second base, and during the attempt to turn a double play, Jack Lopez threw the ball away. The Rocks got the twin-killing anyway, however, as interference was called on the play. Both benches cleared as each team argued the call.

Wilmington’s first serious chance to get on the scoreboard came in the bottom of the seventh inning, though they could not break through. Dominique Taylor popped out to open the seventh, then was followed by back-to-back singles from Logan Moon and Gallagher. The frame would end with a Dexter Kjerstad strike out and a Ramon Torres pop out, which stranded both runners on base.

The Rocks threatened again in the bottom of the eighth inning, but failed to dent the scoreboard again. With relief pitcher Peter Tago into the game for the Dash, Wilmington loaded the bases with one out via three walks from Lopez, Mauricio Ramos, and Robert Pehl. The threat would end, however, when Taylor grounded into a double play to end the frame.

The Rocks continue their seven-game homestand on Friday when they welcome the Carolina Mudcats to town for a four-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m., and fans can listen to the broadcast on 89.7 WGLS-FM.

PEBBLES OF KNOWLEDGE:

For the second consecutive game and the third time this season, a Blue Rock pitcher struck out double-digit batters. Alex Mills fanned 10 men on Thursday, a day after Cody Reed struck out 11 batters. Eric Skoglund was the first Rock to accomplish the feat, when he accumulated 10 punch-outs on May 16 against the Lynchburg Hillcats. The Blue Crew enjoyed four double-digit strike out games from starters a season ago, with the most recent also being the 2014 season-high for the Rocks when Sean Manaea fanned 12 batters on August 29 against the Potomac Nationals.

The Blue Rocks struggled with runners in scoring position in game one of the series, and although they righted the ship on Wednesday, that same problem reared its head on Thursday night. In the series opener, the Rocks went a combined 1-for-10 with runners on second and/or third base, but still found a way to walk off with the 2-1 victory in 12 innings. Thursday evening, Wilmington was shut out for the fifth time this season (and the fourth time in the month of May), as they went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position. Over the three-game series against Winston-Salem, the Blue Crew produced a 6-for-29 showing with runners in scoring position, good for a .207 batting average.

Winston-Salem starter Robinson Leyer lasted six innings on Thursday night, and the pitcher he handed the game off to in the seventh was his brother Euclides Leyer. Euclides entered the Chicago White Sox organization as a free agent in February of 2010. He spent his entire 2014 season with the Dash, pitching to a 1-3 record with a 4.53 ERA in 34 games. Thursday marked his third appearance of 2015, and he has yet to give up a run this season. Robinson was also a free agent signing, beginning his career in 2012. This is his first season with Winston-Salem, and he is now 1-4 with a 4.08 ERA in eight games this year.

Ashton Goudeau made his Adv.-A level debut on Thursday for the Blue Rocks. The right-handed reliever was originally a 27th round pick in the 2012 draft by the Kansas City Royals out of Maple Woods Community College. He began the year with Low-A Lexington, where he pitched to a 1-0 record with a 3.06 ERA in seven games out of the bullpen. On Thursday, Goudeau threw three scoreless innings in his debut, allowing two hits and striking out three.

THEY SAID IT:

Manager Brian Buchanan:

“We had a chance there in the eighth, that was really our only opportunity. We kind of let that guy off the hook when we hit into that double play.”

“(Robinson Leyer) has a good arm. I know his numbers aren’t that great but he threw the ball pretty well.”

“They didn’t hit (Alec Mills) very hard. He had that strikeout that got by. I really think they only hit two balls solidly and had the sac fly. He didn’t pitch too poorly. They just placed some balls, and then obviously the hit and run (by T.J. Williams) was a good play on their part that led to a run. He had a good little breaking ball and he’s deceptive with his delivery, I think that’s the biggest thing for him. He threw the ball well, I just think his pitch count was up a little bit. It was just the fourth inning. I don’t know how many pitches he threw that inning, but I know it was a lot. We just want to be careful with him. I probably would have made that decision with anybody. When a guy gets to the fourth or the fifth and he’s thrown a lot of pitches you just have to watch him.”

Starting Pitcher Alec Mills:

“I definitely felt good with my stuff tonight, but…I’ve got to make that fourth inning quicker. If I want to be a starter, I’ve got to be able to go further than five.”

“I thought I was getting ahead early. I was attacking the strike zone. All of my pitches were working pretty well tonight. I felt like me and Cam (Gallagher) were on the same page early so that definitely helps when you’re in sync with the catcher.”

“(I am) definitely (comfortable as a starter). I think that’s where I can pitch the best but I’m down to do anything. Pitching is pitching, I love it.”

Catcher Cam Gallagher:

“All the pitchers and relievers have been doing really well. (They have) come in and got ahead against a lot of the batters and put them away. (They) get ahead (a lot) throwing strikes, once you get behind in the count it is in the hitters favor, so they are pitching really well and getting ahead a lot. The strikeouts isn’t what we preach but (they have) been up there pretty good every game. (The pitchers) are doing their job every night, day in and day out, giving us a chance. Tonight we didn’t swing the bat as well as we should but we still (had a chance to win.)”

“(The Winston-Salem Dash) are a team that we look to jump on early and first time through the order. (Alec Mills) threw fastballs to try to get themselves down. (The) Second and third time through the lineup we kind of mixed it a bit. (Mills’s) changeup is usually not his best pitch but tonight it was on and he was throwing a lot of strikes. His off-speed curveballs were perfect to get the strikeouts.”

“I thought I had (Cleuluis Rondon on the sac fly.) The ball was coming from right field and it was kind of hard to see the runner coming. It was a great throw and I guess he beat it. The call is the umpire’s call, so there is nothing I can do about it.”

“(Robinson Leyer) threw a lot (of pitches) like Alec (Mills) to kind of get ahead (in the count). We didn’t have any timely hitting and we got the bases loaded and we didn’t come through. We just have to keep swinging the bat and tomorrow is a new day.”

LSU ADVANCES TO SEC TOURNAMENT SEMIFINAL WITH 10-5 WIN OVER ARKANSAS

HOOVER, Ala. – Top-ranked LSU advanced to the SEC Tournament semifinal for the third straight year Thursday night as the Tigers posted a 10-5 win over No. 20 Arkansas at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium.

LSU (48-9), which has won five of the previous seven SEC Tournament championships and two in a row, will play either Florida or Arkansas in the semifinals on Saturday afternoon. The game will begin 30 minutes after the conclusion of the Noon semifinal game on Saturday between Texas A&M and either Alabama or Vanderbilt.

Thursday’s win marked LSU’s ninth straight victory in an SEC Tournament game, dating back to 2013.

Arkansas dropped to 35-21 with Thursday’s loss and will face Florida on Friday evening in an elimination contest.

LSU capitalized on six errors committed by Arkansas in Thursday’s game, including three miscues in the first inning as the Tigers seized a 4-0 lead.

“I think Arkansas’ errors were the result of the pressure that we put on them,” said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. “We put a lot of pressure on them with our speed and the running game. I thought our team’s speed and our bat-handling ability were big factors early in the game. We put pressure on them, they made some mistakes, and we took advantage of them.”

LSU scored four runs in the top of the first inning against Arkansas starter James Teague. Third baseman Conner Hale lifted a sacrifice fly and first baseman Chris Chinea lined an RBI single to highlight the outburst for the Tigers, who also stole two bases and took advantage of a wild pitchh and three Arkansas errors in the frame.

The Tigers extended the lead to 6-0 in the second as rightfielder Mark Laird ripped an RBI double and shortstop Alex Bregman delivered an run-scoring single.

Arkansas narrowed the deficit to 6-4 in the second against LSU starter Austin Bain as shortstop Michael Bernal, first baseman Clark Eagan and leftfielder Joe Serrano each lined RBI singles, and another run scored on a Bain wild pitch.

LSU reliever Russell Reynolds took over for Bain in the second with two outs and a runner at first, and he retired Arkansas centerfielder Andrew Benintendi, the SEC Player of the Year, on a fly ball to left field.

Reynolds (6-0) was brillant in relief, working 3.1 shutout innings and allowing just two hits with no walks and three strikeouts.

Teague (4-4) was charge with the loss as he surrendered six runs – two earned – on six hits in two innings with one walk and no strikeouts.

The Tigers scored two runs in the fourth against Arkansas reliever Jackson Lowery as leftfielder Jake Fraley slapped a run-scoring single and Bregman contributed a sacrifice fly.

Bregman lifted another sacrifice fly in the seventh and centerfielder Andrew Stevenson added a two-out RBI single to give the Tigers a 10-4 advantage.

Arkansas plated a run in the bottom of the seventh rightfielder Tyler Spoon lined a run-scoring single.

Bregman finished 1-for-2 at the plate with three RBI, and second baseman Jared Foster collected three hits and scored two runs to pace the Tigers’ 12-hit attack.

Skoglund Dominates In 1-0 Win Over Carolina
Eric Skoglund Strikes Out Eight Over Seven Innings For His Third Win Of The Season

WILMINGTON, DE – After recording his best outing of the year last time out against Lynchburg, Rocks starter Eric Skoglund turned in another gem on Saturday night as the Rocks took game two of their four-game Memorial Day Weekend series by a 1-0 final over the Carolina Mudcats. Skoglund added another eight strikeouts to his season total, this after recording a career-high 10 punch-outs on May 16 in Lynchburg. The Rocks are now a season-high five games over .500.

Much like Friday night, the Rocks got on the board first via a productive out. After facing the minimum through three innings, thanks mainly to three caught stealing by catcher Jose Briceno, the Rocks finally got to starter Seth Webster, who was making his Advanced-A debut on Friday, in the fifth. Robert Pehl, who was held hitless on Friday, started off the frame with a single. After a Logan Moon strikeout, Dominique Taylor lined one into left field for a base hit, moving Pehl up to second. The next batter, Cam Gallagher, was hit by a slow breaking ball that slipped out of Webster’s hand to load the bases. The nine-hole hitter Dex Kjerstad then stepped up and grounded a ball to Johan Camargo at short. Camargo went to Levi Hyams at second for the fielder’s choice, but the return throw to first was not in time to nab Kjerstad who reached as Pehl crossed home to make it 1-0 Wilmington.

In the eighth inning, Nick Green replaced Skoglund out of the bullpen and he was greeted rudely by Camargo who slapped a double into the left field corner. Camargo was bunted over to third by Hyams. A Keith Curcio infield single put runners on the corners, as Camargo did not want to test the arm of the charging Mauricio Ramos at third. Matt Alvarez was then called upon to try to get the Rocks out of the jam, and he did just that. Alvarez got Connor Lien to strikeout and then induced a groundball off the bat of Sean Godfrey. Just as it looked like he might sneak an RBI-single into center, shortstop Ramon Torres laid out to make the stop and flip to Carlos Garcia for the inning-ending fielder’s choice keeping it a one-run lead for the Rocks.

Skoglund got through seven frames for the second time this season; he last did it on April 29 against Myrtle Beach. Meanwhile, Webster was very impressive in his first start at the Advanced-A level. Webster held a struggling Rocks’ offense to just the one run, while matching Skoglund’s seven innings. Despite the sparkling debut, Webster took a tough-luck loss to move to 0-1 on the year.

The Rocks and Mudcats resume this four-game series on Sunday evening from Frawley Stadium. Coming off a nine-inning no-decision, Jakob Junis takes the ball for the Blue Rocks. Junis has been one of the key pillars of this starting rotation, as he currently sits at 1-3, but with a good 3.42 ERA. The Mudcats will counter with Andrew Waszak who is 1-2 with a 3.27 ERA for Carolina since getting called-up from Low-A Rome. Waszak started the year with Carolina, but made stops at Double-A and Low-A before returning to the Mudcats. First pitch from Frawley is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.

PEBBLES OF KNOWLEDGE:

His last time out on May 16, Eric Skoglund recorded a career-high 10 strikeouts against the Lynchburg Hillcats. That total doubled his previous career-high (five on April 29 vs. Myrtle Beach). Skoglund followed up that start by striking out eight on Saturday against the Mudcats. These two performances followed up Skoglund’s shortest outing of the season when he got through just 3.2 innings on May 11 against the Hillcats. The 14th ranked prospect in the Royals’ organization according Baseball America, Skoglund is now 3-1 with a sparkling 2.12 ERA. In 46.2 innings, Skoglund has given up just 39 hits and seven walks. His strikeout total is looking more respectable now, too, as he has 41 strikeouts on the year.

Carlos Garcia made his Advanced-A debut on Saturday night after being called-up from Low-A Lexington on Thursday in place of Kenny Diekroeger who was promoted to Double-A Northwest Arkansas. Garcia was not able to record his first hit as a Blue Rock, but he still had a very eventful night. In his first at-bat, Garcia reached on an error and then became Briceno’s first victim of the night on the base-paths as he tried swiping third with two-outs. Garcia got down a successful sacrifice bunt in his second plate appearance, which moved Ramon Torres to third with one out, but the Rocks were unable to score. Garcia batted .254 with four doubles, two homeruns, and 11 RBIs at Low-A Lexington before getting the call up to Wilmington.

While Rocks’ catchers have struggled throwing runners out this season, it was the base runners struggling to swipe bags on Saturday. Catcher Jose Briceno was 3-for-3 in throwing out base runners for Carolina on Saturday. First, Briceno caught Garcia trying to swipe third base with two outs in the first frame. Then, Logan Moon and Dominique Taylor were each caught trying to get themselves into scoring position in the second and third innings, respectively. The Rocks are now 30-for-52 (.577) in stolen base attempts this season.

For the fourth time this season on Saturday night, the Rocks were able to hold the opposing squad scoreless. Coming off a shutout at the hands of Winston-Salem on Thursday, the Rocks returned the favor by beating Carolina by the slim 1-0 final. This is the second time Eric Skoglund has been on the mound to start a shutout. The first time he did was the first time Wilmington did it, that game back on April 12, a 5-0 win over the Pelicans. In the four shutouts, the Rocks have used just two starters as Cody Reed has been on the mound for the other two, including a 2-0 win over Potomac last Wednesday afternoon. The Rocks are not quite on pace to reach last year’s total, when the Rocks shutout opponents 17 times.

THEY SAID IT:

Manager Brian Buchanan

“(Eric) Skoglund, I think he threw the ball okay. I don’t think he had his best stuff, but he gave us some quality innings. That play that (Ramon) Torres made in the eighth inning, that’s a big league play. We made a couple errors, but they didn’t hurt us. When we needed to make the play, we did.”

“All the guys (in the starting rotation), there are times when they go out there and they don’t have their best stuff, and they battle and compete and give you what they have. It’s funny to say that (Eric Skoglund) didn’t have his best stuff (when he) threw seven innings of shutout baseball, but I think he wasn’t as crisp as he has been, but he competed and that’s all you can ask for. (The starting pitchers) have given us, time and time again, opportunities to win games.”

“(Playing in lots of close games) teaches them…when their backs to the wall or what have you, they definitely have the experience this year so far to play in these tight games. It teaches them to compete and do the little things to win games.”

“We’re playing every (game the same)…tomorrowwe got to go out and play that game, (and) the next day we play that game. You play so many games…you always try to rack up wins, but just because we’re playing nine games in seven days (on the next road trip, it doesn’t matter). When we play those games, we’re going to have to go out and compete and try to win those games as well.”

Starting Pitcher Eric Skoglund

“Cam (Gallagher) called a great game (behind the plate) and great defense behind me (helped us get the win.) We also had clutch hits when we needed them. I was able to just keep (the Caroline Mudcats) off balanced and that goes to Cam, we did a great job of executing pitches.”

“(I don’t worry about the scouting reports) I just stick to my routine which is pound the strike zone and create early contact (for) groundballs and do whatever I can to get the team in a position to win. We see these guys so much it is honestly irrelevant (to go strictly by a scouting report) it is just baseball.”

“We fed off (the good starts) and root for each other, all we want to do is win. That is a big part of it. We obviously fed off of it, the great starts. Again we try to pound the strike zone and do what we can to keep the team in a position to win.”

“It is unbelievable (pitching in front of this defense,) the middle of the field did a great job tonight, Cam had some big double plays, (Ramon) Torres made an unbelievable play that was kind of a Derek Jeter style play, which was huge to get out of (the top of the fifth). That carried the momentum for the hitting and got a run in, that was huge and all a part of that (play).”

Plenty Of Hits Not Enough To Extend Rocks’ Winning Streak
Wilmington Pounds Out 14 Hits But Only Manages Three Runs In 8-3 Loss To Potomac

WOODBRIDGE, VA – After winning a season-high six games in a row, the Wilmington Blue Rocks finally dropped a game as they fell to Potomac by a 8-3 final on Thursday. Yender Caramo, the starter for the Blue Rocks, had his shortest start of the season, as he went just 3.0 innings, allowing four runs before being lifted. With a loss on Thursday by the Frederick Keys, the Rocks still hold a 3.5 game lead in the race for a first-half Carolina League North crown.

Wilmington got on the board first against Potomac, but the Nationals did not take much time to tie the score and, eventually, take the lead. In the bottom of the first, Stephen Perez reached on a single, the first hit of the day for Potomac. With Isaac Ballou at the plate, Caramo threw a wild pitch, which moved Perez up to second. Catcher Sanitago Nessy thought he might have a chance to nab Perez at second, but he ended up throwing the ball away, allowing him to get all the way to third. Ballou then did his job by grounding out to Ramon Torres with the infield back, scoring Perez and tying the score at 1-1.

Potomac took the lead for good in the very next inning, and they did all of their damage with two-outs. Caramo got two groundouts to start the frame, but then gave up four consecutive singles, leading to two runs. Jimmy Yezzo and Estarlin Martinez reached on back-to-back singles before Narciso Mesa snuck a groundball back up the box to score Yezzo and give Potomac a 2-1 advantage. Christopher Bostick then accounted for the fourth straight hit of the inning, that knock scored Martinez and made it 3-1.

The P-Nats opened this contest up in the fifth as they scored four times off of a combination of Estarlin Coredero and Andrew Edwards. Cordero started the inning and gave up a walk to Drew Ward and a single to Yezzo before being lifted with runners at the corners and just one out. Edwards was greeted by a Martinez safety squeeze. Edwards fielded the ball of the mound but his flip to Nessy at the plate was not in time as Ward scored and made it 5-1. After Edwards hit Bostick with a pitch, Perez got the big blow of the inning, a two-run single making it 7-3. An Edwards wild pitch would score Bostick making it 8-3 before he Ballou to strikeout, ending the big frame for Potomac.

The Rocks did a get a solo homer in the first inning for the second night in a row. On Wednesday, Jack Lopez went deep with one-out, and on Thursday Torres did it a batter sooner as he hit his first homerun of the year, Wilmington’s first leadoff-homer of the season, and made it 1-0 Blue Rocks. Wilmington had a major threat set-up in the third inning. They loaded the bases with one out and Carlos Garcia came up with an RBI-hit for the second night in a row, this one a weak groundball through the right side of the infield scoring Mauricio Ramos from third. The bases were still loaded for Logan Moon, but he could not get the big hit the Rocks needed as he grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the frame, as the Rocks’ threat went by the wayside. They would later add runs on RBI singles by Garcia and Robert Pehl.

The Rocks and Nationals finish up this four-game series on Friday as the Rocks turn to the 14th ranked prospect in the Royals’ system according to Baseball America, Eric Skoglund. Skoglund has been one of the most consistent starters for Wilmington this season, posting a 3-1 record with an impressive 2.12 ERA. The Nationals will turn to a guy making his Advanced-A debut, Phillips Valdez. Valdez started eight games at Low-A Hagerstown this season, going 5-2 with a miniscule 1.47 ERA. First pitch from Pfitzner Stadium is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

PEBBLES OF KNOWLEDGE:

Ramon Torres’ homerun in the first inning on Thursday was not just the Rocks’ first leadoff homer of the year, but it was their first leadoff homer in quite some time. In order to find the last time a Blue Rock hit a leadoff jack, you have to go all the way back to July 19, 2013 when Justin Trapp accomplished the feat at Myrtle Beach’s Ticketreturn.com Field. There was no shortage of leadoff homers that season for Wilmington. That was the last of Trapp’s four leadoff homeruns that season. He was the only Blue Rock to hit a leadoff homerun in 2013.

As hot as the Rocks were during their six-game winning streak, the one thing that remains a thorn in the side of this team is the double play. Wilmington grounded into two more double plays on Thursday, including one by Logan Moon to end a bases loaded threat in the third inning. With those two double plays, the Rocks extended their League-leading total to 49 twin-killings. To put that number into perspective, the team with the second-most double plays this year, the Frederick Keys, have only hit into 36 doubles plays, 13 less than the Rocks who continue to find ways to give the opponents two-outs on one swing of the bat.

With the loss, Wilmington was unable to extend their season-best winning streak any further than six games. The Rocks will have to wait even longer to find that elusive seven-game win streak, as they have not achieved that feat since May of 2011. Four seasons ago, Wilmington went on a seven-game winning streak that spanned from May 16-22. That streak also ended in a loss to a CL North foe, but that time it was the Frederick Keys. Wilmington scored 38 runs over that winning streak, and also won a game Salem in a 1-0 shutout.

Despite the loss, the Rocks were not without any bright spots. Carlos Garcia and Cody Stubbs continue to rake against Potomac pitchers. Garcia collected his first hit at the Advanced-A level on Wednesday night, along with his first two RBIs. On Thursday, he added to those totals, going 3-for-5 with an RBI. In the last two contests, Garcia is 6-for-9 with three RBIs, a run, a double, and no strikeouts. Meanwhile, Stubbs seems to be seeing the baseball more like a beach-ball since getting called-up to Wilmington. Stubbs went 3-for-3 with a couple of doubles in Wednesday’s game-two win, and added to his numbers on Thursday. Stubbs went 4-for-5 with two more doubles. The lone out recorded off of his bat was a deep fly out to the warning track.

THEY SAID IT:

Manager Brian Buchanan

“I think it was just one of those games. (Yender) Caramo just didn’t have it and then it snowballed from there. We let them off the hook there in the second with that double play with the bases loaded. I think that killed us. I think (John Simms) was one or two batters away from getting taken out of that game. (Logan Moon) hit it hard, it was just right at him. I think that gave them a little momentum from there on out. We swung the bats well. We had a lot of quality plate appearances, we just couldn’t push any runs across.”

“I don’t think there’s anything to (the double plays). I don’t think it bothers them. They’re aggressive and, like I’ve been saying all year, they stick with the approach. You’re going to hit into some double plays, unfortunately a lot of those have come with the bases loaded. They’re just resilient. If they don’t score one inning, they just try to score the next and they keep going.”

“They battled. It was kind of a “ho-hum” game and it felt like that the whole time. To get that momentum in the ninth, to have the tying run in the on-deck circle was good."

“I’ve never really seen (Cody Stubbs) play a whole lot. I saw him in Spring Training a little bit, and the he got hurt. He’s taking pitches, and when he gets a pitch he’s driving it so that’s good to see…and he’s left-handed. We haven’t had one of those all year. It’s good to see him swinging the bat.”

Rocks Use Nessy Long Ball, Six Frederick Errors to Complete Sweep
Wilmington now season-best 10 games above .500

WILMINGTON, DE – A two-run homer by Santiago Nessy and six Frederick errors helped the Blue Rocks to a 7-4 victory at Frawley Stadium over the Keys on Sunday. The Rocks (33-23) entered this four-game weekend series against the Frederick Keys (27-29) up by only two games in the Northern Division, but after Sunday’s 7-4 win to complete the sweep, Wilmington now sits six games clear of Frederick in the division.

Frederick opened up the scoring on Sunday in the top of the third inning, though the damage could have been much worse. Logan Uxa got the inning going with a bloop single into shallow center field, and was followed by a walk from Phil Llewellyn. Starting pitcher Alec Mills then hit Josh Hart with a pitch to load the bases with nobody out. The next batter was Adrian Marin, and he grounded into a double play, scoring Uxa and giving the Keys a 1-0 lead. Mills would get Drew Dosch to fly out to escape the frame without further trouble.

The Rocks tied the score at one apiece in the third, although it could have been a much bigger inning for Wilmington. Nessy singled to leadoff the inning and Dominique Taylor reached behind him after being clipped by a Mitch Horacek offering. A bunt attempt by Carlos Garcia would result in a fielder’s choice as Taylor would be cut down heading to second. With runners on the corners and one out, Ramon Torres would hit a tailor-made double play ball to Anthony Caronia at second, but Caronia would pull his glove up too soon and allow it to scoot into right field, allowing Nessy to score from third. The Rocks would have runners at second and third with one out after a Torres steal, but Horacek would get two strikeouts to get out of the inning with the score tied 1-1.

With the game knotted at one in the fourth inning, the Rocks took a two-run lead with one swing of the bat by Nessy. Horacek started off the inning by getting two quick outs on strikeouts. He had struck out four in a row going back to the end of the third frame, but Logan Moon broke that trend with an infield single to Dosch at third. Dosch threw the ball away and allowed Moon to move into scoring position. Then Nessy stepped up and cranked a 2-1 off-speed pitch out of Frawley Stadium beyond the left field bullpen to make it a 3-1 lead.

After the Keys tied the game at three in the sixth inning, the Rocks were able to grab all of the momentum back in the bottom of the frame. With reliever Jon Keller on the bump, Jack Lopez continued his hot-streak by leading off the inning with a single. Moon sacrificed Lopez over to third, and then Lopez got himself to third base with a great jump and a stolen base. Keller then threw his first wild pitch of the inning, allowing Lopez to score and give the Rocks a 4-3 lead. Taylor then reached thanks to a Dosch throwing error. The throw allowed Taylor to move to second. That was Dosch’s second miscue of the ballgame and the fourth for the Keys. Keller’s second wild pitch moved Taylor to third and he would score on a Garcia double to the right-centerfield gap to extend Wilmington’s lead to 5-3.

The teams traded runs in the seventh inning thanks to an RBI double by Tucker Nathans in the top of the frame, and a bases loaded walk drawn by Moon in the bottom half. Wilmington capped the scoring in the eighth inning when Torres came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Robert Pehl.

The Rocks hit the road for a seven-game, two-city road trip starting on Monday night in Winston-Salem. The Rocks send their piggyback combination of Yender Caramo and Luis Rico to the mound. Caramo gets the start on Monday, with Rico scheduled to come out of the bullpen. Caramo is coming off his third win of the season. He went four innings in relief against Carolina to move to 3-3 with a 2.98 ERA. The Dash will send Robinson Leyer to the mound. Leyer’s numbers do not jump off the page, but he handled the Rocks his last time against Wilmington, going six scoreless innings for his only win so far this season. First pitch from Winston-Salem is scheduled for 7 p.m.

PEBBLES OF KNOWLEDGE:

The two best strikeout pitchers in the Carolina League squared off at Frawley Stadium on Sunday. Coming into the afternoon, Mitch Horacek was the league-leader in strikeouts with 70, and the Rocks’ Alec Mills was a distant second with 59. Horacek got through five innings on Sunday, fanning six batters on the day, pushing his Carolina League leading total to 76. Mills, meanwhile, collected five punchouts on the afternoon, giving him 64 for the season. Entering Sunday, Wilmington hurlers occupied the third and fourth place spots as well, with Saturday’s starter, Cody Reed, totaling 56 strikeouts this year, while Jakob Junis has recorded 52.

Santiago Nessy has not gotten a lot of playing time since getting called-down from Double-A Northwest Arkansas, but that may change as Nessy has really started to hit the ball. Nessy has shown off his extra-base power in the two games he played on the Rocks’ home stand. Nessy went 2-for-4 on Sunday including a two-run homer to give the Rocks the lead in the fourth. On Friday night, Nessy accounted for most of the Rocks’ offense; he drove in three runs on a bases-clearing double. Nessy just missed a grand slam by a matter of feet. His homerun on Sunday was Nessy’s first since May 2 with the Naturals, a solo shot against Tulsa. Nessy is now batting .243 with Wilmington.

The Blue Rocks are next to impossible to beat at home this season. With the win on Sunday, Wilmington improves to a Carolina League best 14 games above .500 at 23-9. That success has more than made up for the fact that the Rocks are 10-14 away from Frawley Stadium, where the biggest difference has been the pitching. Rocks hurlers are throwing to a 2.34 ERA in 32 games at home, while that mark balloons to 3.74 in 24 games on the road. Wilmington particularly owns the Keys in the First State, as they are now hold a 7-1 record against Frederick at Frawley this season. The only time the Keys came away victorious in Wilmington this season was on April 17, when the Rocks fell 6-4. The opposite is true when it comes to playing at Harry Grove Stadium, where the Blue Rocks have lost three of four games to the Keys this year.

Jack Lopez just loves hitting against Frederick pitching. The Rocks shortstop came away with a 3-for-4 day on Sunday, including three singles, a run, and two stolen bases. Lopez ends the four-game series 8-for-13 with one RBI, four runs, and two stolen bases. Through 12 games against the Keys over the course of the season, Lopez is 19-for-46 with two doubles, 10 runs, three RBIs, and six stolen bases. Lopez’s numbers against the rest of the Carolina League are not nearly as friendly, as he is only batting .121 (20-for-165) against foes not from Frederick.

THEY SAID IT:

Manager Brian Buchanan:

“That was exciting, wasn’t it? They’re playing well. We’re getting big hits when we need them…we’re making pitches when we need them. Our defense, I think, saved us today. That play that (Jack Lopez) made was one of the best plays I’ve ever seen. Frederick battled back but we kept adding on runs and manufacturing runs.”

(Santiago Nessy) is swinging the bat well. He’s catching fine. With him and (Cam) Gallagher behind the plate, we should be okay.”

“We just have to keep doing what we’re doing. We’re not going to change anything. We keep going out and, home or road, just keep staying with your approach. We’ve got to pitch and play defense and get some hits.”

Shortstop Jack Lopez:

“It was fun, I had a good game. I know we’re going out there and battling and it’ll be nice to clinch the (first-half). Of course, we’ve got emotions running high, but this is what we live for.”

“At first, I was just trying to get to (the line drive in the seventh). I couldn’t let that ball drop, especially with runners in scoring position. After making sure I got one out, I just tried to get him at home. I made a good throw, but (Santiago Nessy) also made a good play receiving it.”

“It is (fun). I’ve said it since day one, this clubhouse is amazing. Nothing our teams from a year ago or two years ago, but this team has really good chemistry…you can tell. We’re playing well. It’s not just us as (hitters), but the pitchers. Once (a starter) is strong, someone is going to come in from the bullpen and do the job. Just picking each other up is a huge part.”

Catcher Santiago Nessy:

“(Hitting the homerun) was fun. I was trying to put my team on the scoreboard. It feels good.”

“I’m always working with our hitting coach back in the cage…just working on competing. We just need to come in and keep working. Every day is a new game. We need to come in everyday and keep working.”

“The team feels good…the atmosphere in the clubhouse is good. We just need to keep doing what we’re doing and having fun.”

Wilmington Swept in Doubleheader Against Dash to Begin Road Trip
Rocks turn triple play in nightcap, but can’t take victory

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Blue Rocks’ road woes continued on Tuesday night, as Wilmington dropped a pair of games to the Winston-Salem Dash. The Rocks fell to 33-25 on the season, while the Dash improved to 24-33. The good news is that with the Frederick Keys splitting their doubleheader with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans on Tuesday, the Blue Crew’s magic number to clinch the first half crown in the Carolina League North dropped to eight.

In the very first inning of the night, the Rocks jumped out to an early lead. Carlos Garcia singled to lead off the game, and reached third on a two-base error by right fielder Nolan Earley. Wilmington got the scoring started with the very next batter, as Jack Lopez singled through the drawn-in infield to make it 1-0 Blue Crew. Dash starter Robinson Leyer would bear down and get out of the inning without further damage.

The Blue Rocks padded their lead in the top of the third inning with a pair of runs. Garcia began the frame with a single, and then two batters later, Cody Stubbs walked to put two men on with one down. Mauricio Ramos would bring both men home with a double, stretching the Rocks lead to 3-0. Leyer got Frank Schwindel to fly out and Dexter Kjerstad to pop out to end the inning.

The Dash came up with a quick response in the very next half frame. Adam Engel singled to lead off the inning, and then stole his way to second base. Yender Caramo retired the next two men to face him, but couldn’t complete the inning without yielding a score, as Chris Jacobs doubled to bring home Engel and get his team to within 3-1. Omar Narvaez would follow with a line out to end the frame.

Winston-Salem finally grabbed the lead with a big fifth inning, and chased Caramo in the process. With one out, Engel and Jake Peter singled to put runners on the corners. Trey Michalczewski then laced a triple to center field, scoring both runners and tying the game at three. That hit would end Caramo’s day, as Ashton Goudeau came in to relieve the Wilmington starter. After Goudeau walked Jacobs, Narvaez produced a sacrifice fly that scored Michalczewski, handing the Dash a 4-3 advantage, a lead which they would not relinquish.

In game two, the scoring began in the bottom of the second inning. With Luis Rico on the bump to start the nightcap, Jacobs led off the second frame with a long home run to give the Dash an early 1-0 lead. After a pair of singles to put a couple men on with one out, Rico used the double play ball to get out of the inning without any more runs crossing.

The Dash extended their lead in the third inning with another run. Toby Thomas began the frame with a double, and then was bunted to third by Engel. With Peter at the plate, Rico uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Thomas to score, making it 2-0 Dash. Peter would eventually walk, as would Michalczewski immediately after, but Rico got the next two men out to escape the inning.

Wilmington chipped away with a run of their own in the top of the fourth inning. Schwindel walked to begin the frame, then traded places with Dominique Taylor on a fielder’s choice. Two batters later, and after Taylor stole second base, Santiago Nessy came through with an RBI single, plating Taylor and cutting the Dash lead to 2-1.

The Dash put the first two men on in the sixth inning, but Cleuluis Rondon grounded into an around-the-horn triple play, the second time Wilmington has turned three in 2015. That momentum did not carry over to the top of the seventh and final inning however, as Logan Moon was stranded on second base with one out to end the ballgame.

The Rocks and Dash are back at it tomorrow in game three of their series at BB&T Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., and fans can listen to the broadcast on 89.7 WGLS-FM. Wilmington returns home for a three-game series against the Salem Red Sox on June 15 for a 6:35 p.m. game. For tickets, call 302-888-BLUE, or visit www.bluerocks.com.

PEBBLES OF KNOWLEDGE:

Game one was very unkind to the lower half of the Blue Rocks order. In the opening contest of Tuesday’s doubleheader, the five through nine hitters in Wilmington’s order went a combined 0-for-15 with two strikeouts. That part of the lineup consisted of Frank Schwindel, Dexter Kjerstad, Cam Gallagher, Logan Moon, and Dominique Taylor. All the offense came from the top four in the lineup (Carlos Garcia, Jack Lopez, Cody Stubbs, and Mauricio Ramos), who went a combined 4-for-9, accounting for all three runs in the contest.

Cody Stubbs has only played in 10 games this season since returning from extended spring training after an injury delayed the start of his campaign, but he has certainly made his presence felt in the middle of the Blue Rocks order. After Tuesday’s doubleheader, Stubbs is batting .500 (18-for-36) with a homer, six doubles, three RBIs, and seven runs. He has also now hit safely in all 10 of his games this season, which eclipses the old high for a hitting streak by a Blue Rock this season. Schwindel’s nine-game hitting streak from April 22 to May 1 was the previous high, making Stubbs the only Rock to reach double-digits this year. Stubbs spent 2014 in Wilmington as well, and he led the Rocks with 10 home runs a season ago.

The bat stayed hot for Lopez on Tuesday. The Rocks shortstop went a combined 2-for-7 over the two games against the Dash, and with hits in both contests, he extended his current hitting streak to five games. That stretch matches his high mark on the campaign, with Lopez’s previous five-game hitting streak taking place from April 22 to April 26. Over his last five, he is batting .556 (10-for-18), and he has raised his average by 35 points from .194 to .229.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Dash put two men on with nobody out, but Luis Rico and the Rocks got out of the inning on one swing of the bat. Cleuluis Rondon grounded a ball to Ramos at third, who stepped on the bag for one out, threw to Ramon Torres at second for two, and then Rondon was thrown out at first to complete the second triple play of the season for the Rocks. The first one came on April 19 against Frederick at Frawley Stadium, a game which the Rocks won by a score of 4-3. The triple play was also the third in two seasons for Wilmington, and the second in as many years against the Dash. The Blue Crew turned three against Winston-Salem on July 27, 2014 at Frawley Stadium. That was a game the Rocks also lost, falling 6-1 that day to the Dash.

THEY SAID IT:

Shortstop Jack Lopez:

“I’m keeping my confidence up (at the plate)…(I’m) just going out there and battling every at-bat. In my second game, I got three strikeouts, but it’s part of the game. I’m not going to get two or three hits every game. (I’ll just) go out there and try to help the team, and just get back here tomorrow and work hard to get another (win).”

“(Getting hits) is what they have me here to do. I always hit in the first or second spot in the lineup, and I’m kind of the set-up guy for the middle of the lineup. That’s part of my job. I know during the first month or so I wasn’t having too much luck, but now I’m able to turn it around little by little and (if) I just keep on working hard, I’ll get where I want it to be.”

“I haven’t had too much good luck the last couple days on defense. I had a couple bad hops, a ball that got away…That’s part of baseball. Nine out of 10 ground balls, I’ll make the play behind my pitchers, and that’s what I want. I want the pitchers to have confidence in me, and I’ll be out there to have their back 24/7.”

“I think we were all shocked (on the triple play). We all thought (Cleuluis Rondon) was going to bunt, and he worked a 3-2 count…It’s funny, because (Mauricio) Ramos (told Ramon) Torres on the pitch before ‘get ready, if it’s a ground ball to me, I’m going to step (on the base) and go to you’, and it just worked out that same way.”

“We can (feel clinching a playoff berth is close). The vibe in the locker room is awesome. Even though we lost, you can go in there and everybody still has their head up, knowing we’re going to be alright. We have a couple days left (until) the second half, and we’ve got to keep working hard, not worry too much about clinching. We’ve just got to do what we can do, taking care of our job, and everything will take care of itself in time.”

“I can’t (say why we’re much better at home than on the road). Like I said, that’s part of baseball. At least we do play good at home. If we don’t play too good on the road…we get to go home and do our job, and get a (win) for the fans. Not only for the fans, but also for us, and kind of boost our confidence.”

Wilmington Struggles To Find Offense In Series-Opening Loss To Salem
The Rocks Recorded Just Five Hits En Route To Their Second-Straight Loss

SALEM, VA – The Wilmington Blue Rocks dropped their series opener with the Salem Red Sox, 4-2 on Friday at Lewis Gate Field. After a three-hit performance on Thursday against Winston-Salem, Wilmington managed just five hits on Friday. The Rocks’ magic number to clinch a first-half Carolina League north crown is still at six thanks to Lynchburg’s 1-0 win over Myrtle Beach. Wilmington is four games ahead of the Hillcats with nine contests remaining in the half.

Despite falling into an early hole against CL All-Star Cody Reed, the Red Sox were able to battle back, tying the game in the bottom of the first at one. Yolian Cerse singled with one away and then got to third when Sam Travis followed him up with a double past Logan Moon in left. With the infield back, Mario Martinez hit a grounder to second base. Ramon Torres got the out at first, but Cerse scored to make it a 1-1 game.

The Sox fell into another one-run deficit in the fifth, but they would answer back in a big way in the bottom of the inning. After Reed got two quick fly outs to start the frame, Salem put their rally-caps on and put two men on base via a single and a walk. Then Travis came back to the plate and added another extra-base hit to his ledger, this one a three-run jack to centerfield, giving the Red Sox a 4-2 lead. Reed made it through seven innings, but left in line for the loss.

Wilmington cracked the scoreboard first in the first. Jack Lopez tried to bunt Ramon Torres from first to second with nobody out, but the bunt attempt deadened in front of home plate and allowed J.T, Watkins to gun down Torres. Lopez would respond by stealing second, his ninth stolen bag of the year. With two outs, Cody Stubbs would start a new hitting streak by singling into right, brining Lopez home and making it 1-0 Rocks. Wilmington would take another one-run lead in the top of the fifth thanks to Santiago Nessy’s second homer of the season, a solo shot.

The Rocks will look to bounce back from two-consecutive road losses as they take on Salem in Virginia again on Saturday. Wilmington will turn to another CL All-Star, Alec Mills, to right the ship. Mills is 4-3 with a 2.97 ERA. He will have to square-off against Ty Buttrey who has been stellar for Salem this season. Buttrey is 4-0 with a 2.40 ERA in five games since joining the team at the beginning of May. First pitch from Virginia is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.

PEBBLES OF KNOWLEDGE:

After losing his team-best 11-game hitting streak on Thursday night, Cody Stubbs picked up right where he left off with a hit against Salem on Friday. Stubbs has now hit safely in 12 of his 13 games with the Blue Rocks since joining the team from extended Spring Training on May 27. An added bonus was the fact that Stubbs was able to drive in a run on Friday, a rarity for him this season despite his pension for getting on base. His RBI on Friday was just Stubbs’ fifth since joining the squad. This has become an unfortunate trend for Stubbs. In 2014, Stubbs led the Blue Rocks in homeruns (10), but only drove in 39 runs in 92 games. Bubba Starling, who hit nine homers last year for Wilmington, led the team with 54 RBIs. Stubbs probably won’t be found complaining. He is currently hitting .408, with 20 hits, eight runs scored, and a team-leading .592 slugging-percentage with a homerun added to his stat-line since coming back to Wilmington.

Santiago Nessy, despite a slow-start with Wilmington, has been red-hot over his last nine games. Nessy has now hit safely in seven of his last nine, sending his batting average into an upward trend. Nessy is now batting .286, after going hitless in his first two games on the Riverfront. Nessy was acquired by Kansas City from the Toronto Blue Jays organization in a trade that sent RHP Liam Hendricks back to Canada. Nessy started his stint with Kansas City in Double-A with Northwest Arkansas, but Nessy struggled batting just .185 in 17 games, including just one homer and six RBIs. He appears to have found his groove back in Advanced-A, though. Nessy has already eclipsed his RBI total at Double-A, driving in his ninth run on Friday night with his second long ball of the season.

Nessy’s homerun on Friday was a rare one for the Blue Rocks. Nessy’s second of the season was number 21 for Wilmington, tying them for the lowest total in the Carolina League along with Winston-Salem. Zane Evans still leads the team with four homers, despite being called-up to Double-A in the middle of May. Frank Schwindel is the current team-leader with three. Cody Reed’s homer surrendered to Sam Travis was also a rarity, just Reed’s second gopher-ball given up in 2015. As a team, Wilmington has allowed just 22 long balls, second fewest in the CL. Only the Carolina Mudcats have given up fewer homers (19).

The Blue Rocks continued to struggle on the road this season. With the loss on Friday, Wilmington now holds a record of 11-18 away from the Riverfront. That mark stands in stark contrast with their 23-9 record in games at Frawley Stadium, the best home record in the Carolina League. The biggest difference between home and the road has been the pitching, with Rocks hurlers throwing to a 2.34 ERA at Frawley. That number balloons to 3.84 in away games. Rocks’ hitters are also struggling on the road, though the difference is not nearly as noticeable. Rocks’ hitters are batting .259 at home, compared to .256 on the road.

THEY SAID IT:

Catcher Santiago Nessy

“Yes (it was a frustrating loss). We need to compete. We competed on the field today, we just lost the game in one pitch. We just need to compete and come back tomorrow ready to go.”

“(Cody Reed) pitched good. In the beginning, he was a little up, but then he worked himself down in the strike-zone. He made good pitches. After that (fifth) inning, he felt a little bit frustrated because they turned the game around. He’s got good stuff. They don’t have too many lefties. He threw a couple of good changeups and he struck a couple of guys out with the slider. Just one pitch turned the game, but we don’t control that.”

“When the team plays at home, we feel good. It’s our home, we need to (make other teams respect that). Obviously, other teams feel the same way. When you go to other places, maybe they play harder like we play harder. I’m not saying we don’t play hard on the road, but it’s kind of like that. Sometimes it’s difficult to beat us on our field. You have more time to prepare (at home) from a hitter’s perspective. You have more time to take swings in the cage and more time to do your routine. On the road, you have to get ready fast and then go to the field. You get to take (batting practice) and (fielding) and then you have a half-hour to get ready for the game. For me, it has to be a little bit earlier and everybody feels the same. Some teams make rules that keep you off-balance.”

“(I’ve been) competing and preparing myself better. Mentally, I have a positive mind. Being positive helps a lot. Obviously, working with Abraham Nunez, our hitting coach, has been great. We have fun in the cage. We’re building a new routine because the routine I had before wasn’t working because it was tough on me…coming off an injury. I just keep working hard in the cage with Abraham.”

“Obviously, catching and hitting (with Kansas City) is new for me. I care a lot about catching because that’s my position and I need to take care of the pitchers. I need to make them feel comfortable. It’s been hard for me to learn every pitcher. I’m still learning (Cody) Reed and (Eric) Skoglund and all of those guys, because they are new to me. It’s been fun to work with those guys and with the staff.”

Mills’ Gem Spoiled By Lack Of Offense In Walk-Off Loss To Salem
Alec Mills Threw Eight Scoreless But One Run In The Ninth Was The Difference

SALEM, VA – Despite eight scoreless innings from Alec Mills, the Wilmington Blue Rocks lost for the fifth time in their last six games, falling 1-0 to the Salem Red Sox on Saturday at Lewis Gale Field. Mario Martinez’s bases-loaded single off of Kevin McCarthy with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning gave Salem the walk-off win. The setback, coupled with Lynchburg’s win at Myrtle Beach, dropped the Rocks’ lead in the Carolina League North to three games with eight left to play. The Blue Crew’s magic number to clinch a playoff berth remains at six.

McCarthy came on out of the bullpen to replace Mills to start the ninth inning. Jose Vinicio started off the frame with a single back up the box to give Salem a leadoff base runner. Vinicio scooted into scoring position after a sacrifice bunt from Manuel Margot. Tzu-Wei Lin then followed it up with a sharply hit single into center. The ball was hit right at Logan Moon and forced Vinicio to hold up at third. The Blue Rocks then opted to walk the dangerous Sam Travis who helped lead Salem to a win on Friday with a three-run homerun. With the bases loaded, Martinez stepped up and sent a grounder through the left side, bringing home Vinicio for the win. The loss was McCarthy’s first of the season as he moved to 2-1 overall at Advanced-A.

Saturday’s game was a classic pitcher’s duel as Mills matched Salem starter Ty Buttrey and the Sox bullpen pitch-for-pitch. Mills allowed just four hits through eight innings while striking out four and not walking a single batter. The eight inning performance for Mills tied his career-high for innings pitched, which he did on June 1 at Carolina. Buttrey took a no decision, but was solid through five innings, working out of two jams and bringing his season ERA down to a very respectable 2.06. The Sox bullpen was dominant in their four innings of relieving Buttrey. Aaron Wilkerson pitched two perfect innings in relief of Buttrey and then German Taveras matched Wilkerson with another two perfect innings as he picked up the win, moving to 3-0 this season.

The Rocks’ offense had their opportunities on Saturday. Carlos Garcia had a big day, going 2-for-4 with two extra-base hits. Garcia hit a two-out triple in the third, but was stranded there. Dex Kjerstad was thrown out trying to stretch a single into a double earlier in the inning. Garcia added a two-out double in the fifth with Moon at first, but Moon was held up at third and they were both stranded in scoring position.

The Rocks will look to salvage the final game of this three-game series on Sunday afternoon. Wilmington will turn to the Royal’s 14th ranked prospect according to Baseball America, Eric Skoglund. Skoglund was selected to the CL All-Star team as he stands at 5-2 with a 3.06 ERA. Salem will counter with Trey Ball who is 5-5 with a 3.99 ERA. First pitch from Salem, Virginia is scheduled for 4:05 p.m.

PEBBLES OF KNOWLEDGE:

After a successful home stand, the Blue Rocks’ offense continues to struggle during their current road trip. Wilmington was shutout for the eighth time this season on Saturday. The Rocks have now scored three runs or less in 36 of their 63 games, overall. The clutch hitting has also gone by the wayside for the Rocks. In their last three games, the Rocks have just two hits with runners in scoring position. Wilmington’s 215 runs scored this season is the worst total in the Carolina League, despite being fourth in team hitting with a .256 average. They are also tied for last in the league with 21 long balls.

For the second time in his career, Alec Mills was able to make it through eight innings for the Blue Rocks. Saturday was the third time in his last four outings that Mills has made it through at least seven frames. He had not made it through more than six innings in his first eight starts of the season. Saturday’s outing also marked the first time this season Mills made it through an outing without allowing any runs. Mills is now 4-3 with a 2.62 ERA. He’s pitched one complete game and is currently allowing slightly less than a hit per inning. He has allowed 68 hits and struck out 68 batters in 68.2 innings pitched.

Carlos Garcia stayed hot with another two hits added to his ledger on Saturday night. The speedy infielder has now hit safely in five of his last six contests. His triple in the third inning was his third of the season, putting him in second on the Blue Rocks, despite playing just 15 games with the team so far. Garcia has multiple-hits in six of those 15 games. Garcia is now batting .295. His numbers were not nearly as good with Low-A Lexington. The Venezuelan batted .254 in 35 games with no triples and 11 RBIs. He already has eight RBIs in his 15 games with Wilmington.

The Blue Rocks continued to struggle on the road this season. With the loss on Saturday, Wilmington now holds a record of 11-19 away from the Riverfront. That mark stands in stark contrast with their 23-9 record in games at Frawley Stadium, the best home record in the Carolina League. The biggest difference between home and the road has been the pitching, with Rocks hurlers throwing to a 2.34 ERA at Frawley. That number balloons to 3.74 in away games. Rocks' hitters are also struggling on the road, though the difference is not nearly as noticeable. Rocks' hitters are batting .259 at home, compared to .253 on the road.

THEY SAID IT:

Manager Brian Buchanan

“(Alec) Mills did an outstanding job. That’s the best game he’s thrown all year, by far…We hit some balls hard. That ball that (Mauricio) Ramos hit there and they made some great defensive plays on us to keep it 0-0. You have to tip your hat. They did a great job pitching, as well. It just didn’t work out.”

“I talked to them today before the game…just go out and have fun and enjoy it. This is why we play the games, (for this) opportunity that we have. I think they’ll be fine. They didn’t play bad tonight, it just didn’t work out. It’s one of those things where we have to come out tomorrow and…it’s one game at a time. It’s one of those things where you don’t press; just enjoy it and have fun and play the game the way it’s supposed to be played. We’ve got talented enough players on the team where I think it will work out.”

“You can’t really explain (the struggles on the road). I guess it’s just home-cooking. We’re tough at home and on the road we’re kind of below-average. We’ve been walked-off a few times on the road, so it’s not like we’re out of games. It’s just that we can’t get that big hit or finish the game off.”

Second Baseman Carlos Garcia

“I think (the problem) was facing a really good pitcher tonight. We made some good swings and had really good at-bats. Mauricio Ramos hit the ball good tonight for us, but he hit the ball right at them right after I hit the triple. It was tough. They were playing really good defense. Their pitcher was making really good pitches for strikes. Mills did a good job. (Kevin) McCarthy was trying, but they worked hard in that last inning and made some really good swings.”

“Of course (their big plays are tough on us) mentally. There was not really good luck for us because we’ve been hitting the ball right at them. It’s not easy for us trying to handle that. We just have to keep focused at home plate and keep swinging the bat.”

“We had a meeting before practice and we talked to Buchanan (about the division). He told us to keep doing what we’ve been doing all season and just be confident because we have to show the rest of the teams why we are in first place. We have a really good team, we have really good pitchers, we have really good hitters, we can play defense…we can do a lot of good things on the field. We have to keep working, we have to keep fighting if we want to get over this loss tomorrow.”

“It’s really tough because we want to help (Mills) out and score some runs and give a win to him. He has been doing a really good job that last (couple of) outings I’ve seen. He’s a really good pitcher. It’s tough when we can’t score, especially when we have some good swings…and we’re hitting the ball hard. We’re just getting the singles and not scoring. We just have to keep doing our job and keep fighting.”

“(Offense) is about confidence. I’ve been talking to Abraham Nunez…I’ve known him for two or three years, he’s a really good hitting coach. He’s been talking to me about my feel for the type of ballpark we have in Wilmington. The ball doesn’t really fly there so we have to keep swinging at the pitches down. Get some hard groundballs and line drives. I think I’ve been keeping concentrated on hitting the ball on the ground and I’ve been feeling really good with that.”

Pitcher Alec Mills

“Early on, I took it as a goal to myself to take it easy and really make sure the fastball was down today and I’d be able to ramp it up in the later innings. I think everything was down today. My slider was the best it’s been all year and I could lean on that when I needed it.”

“Personally, I try to go out there and throw up nine zeroes every game. I’m hard on myself, so if I don’t I’m upset.”

“It would be huge (to get a win on Sunday). Honestly, I thought today we hit it hard, just right at a lot of guys. It’s one of those things where they’re just not falling. I remember Ramos could have had a huge double, but there was a diving catch in center field. They’ll start falling. It’s just one of those things where we’ve got to keep playing strong and finish out.”

TCU DEFEATS LSU IN COLLEGE WORLD SERIES OPENER, 10-3

OMAHA, Neb. -- TCU broke a scoreless tie with two unearned runs lead in the fourth inning then used the momentum to place the Tigers in the College World Series loser's bracket with a pair of four-run frames on Sunday afternoon, 10-3, at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha.

LSU (53-11), which committed a season-high four errors, will face the loser of tonight's Vanderbilt versus Cal State Fullerton game on Tuesday at 2 p.m. CT on ESPN2.

TCU (50-13) will take on the winner of the Commodores and Titans in the winner's bracket at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

“It’s amazing, I’ve been in this game for a long time, and sometimes you see things you haven’t seen all year, or for years,” said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. “We just had a couple of missed plays there, and they got clutch hits, and things just kind of spiraled out of control for us.

“So, what we’re going to do is regroup. We have a practice day tomorrow. We’ll get ready to play again on Tuesday, whoever we play, whether it’s Vanderbilt of Fullerton. We’ll regain our composure and our poise and confidence, most importantly, and get ready to play on Tuesday. We know we’re a much better team than what we demonstrated today.”

In the bottom of the third, the Tigers looked to get an early lead when Jared Foster singled to left, stole second and tried to score on a single to shallow center field by Jake Fraley. However, Foster was thrown out at home plate on a perfect throw from TCU centerfielder Cody Jones and a block of home plate by catcher Evan Skoug.

After retiring the first nine Horned Frogs he faced, LSU starter Jared Poche' (9-2) put himself in a jam in the fourth by committing two throwing errors. Both runs came around to score on singles by Connor Wanhanen and Dane Steinhagen to give TCU a 2-0 lead.

The Tigers fought back with a run in the bottom of the fourth. Alex Bregman and Kade Scivicque each singled to start the inning, and both advanced on a groundout by Conner Hale. Bregman scored on another groundout by Andrew Stevenson to cut the deficit to 2-1.

In the fifth, Poche' loaded the pases with a pair of walks and a single. With the infield in, Hale was unable to handle a hard grounder at third base and TCU's third run scored.

Poche' hit the next batter with the bases loaded and was lifted after giving up a two-run single to Wanhanen. TCU led 6-1.

The Horned Frogs added four more runs on four hits in the top of the seventh off three Tigers relievers to push the advantage to 10-1.

Meanwhile, after giving up five hits in the first three innings, TCU starter Preston Morrison (12-3) kept the Tigers off balance, sitting down 12 straight batters from the fourth through seventh innings before leaving the game with a nine-run lead.

With one out in the eighth inning, Foster broke a streak of 13 outs with a solo home run to left field off TCU reliever Brian Howard. With two outs, the Tigers manufactured another run when Fraley walked, moved to second on an infield single by Bregman, and to third on a wild pitch. A single by Scivicque plated Fraley, but Hale grounded out to
the pitcher to end the threat.

The Tigers used a CWS record-tying eight pitchers in the contest. The start of the game was delayed 31 minutes due to lightning in the area.

Rocks Shutout For Second Straight Night As They Are Swept By Sox
Wilmington’s Offense Goes Quiet Again In Fourth Consecutive Loss

SALEM, VA – The Wilmington Blue Rocks were shut out for the second consecutive night as they lost their fourth straight game on Sunday by a 7-0 final against the Salem Red Sox at Lewis Gale Field. The loss, coupled with a Lynchburg loss and a Frederick win, puts the Rocks just three games ahead of both the Hillcats and the Keys in the Carolina League North with just seven games left in the season’s first-half. The magic number for the Rocks to clinch a first-half crown is down to five.

Salem reached the scoreboard first against starter Yender Caramo. In the third inning, Kevin Heller led off the frame with a double and moved to third on a ground ball to the right side off the bat of Jordan Weems. Jose Vinicio, who scored the winning run on Saturday night, then sent a grounder down the first base line. Frank Schwindel made a diving attempt on the ball, but it kicked off of his glove allowing Heller to score and make it 1-0 Red Sox. The Sox would extend their lead in the very next inning as another leadoff double, this one from Sam Travis, set up Salem for some insurance. A wild pitch from Caramo moved Travis up to third with one out, and with two outs Forrestt Allday sent a grounder into right, scoring Travis and making it 2-0 in the fourth. Caramo would end up loading the bases after the RBI knock from Allday, but he would strand them loaded and escape with no further damage.

Heading into the fifth inning, Dex Kjerstad worked a four-pitch walk before the tarp was called for by the umpires due to some light rain and lightning in the area of Salem. After a 1:08 delay, the two teams resumed and both starting pitchers’ days were done. Williams Jerez replaced Salem starter Trey Ball who worked a 3-0 count on Dominique Taylor before the tarp was pulled. Jerez worked all the way back and got Taylor to strikeout. He would give up a single to Logan Moon, but Jerez would work around it and strand two men on to maintain a 2-0 lead.

Salem took a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the eighth, and they proceeded to blow things wide-open against reliever Ashton Goudeau. Salem loaded the bases thanks to a hit batter, a walk, and a single with one out. Heller then sent a groundball to Ramon Torres at second that looked like it might be an inning-ending double play, but the ball got under Torres and into the outfield, scoring two runs on the error. Goudeau would get a strikeout of Weems, but Vinicio would then send a ball out to right field that initially looked like a three-run homerun, but the umpires called it two-run double as runners scored from first and second. After arguments from both managers, the call stood and it was 7-0 Red Sox, which would end up being the final as Austin Maddox worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his ninth save of the season.

The Rocks and Sox both head up I-95 as the two teams will meet on Monday night in the opener of a three-game series at Frawley Stadium. The Rocks will turn to the 14th prospect in the Royals’ organization according to Baseball America, Eric Skoglund. Skoglund will have Luis Rico coming into the game behind him from the bullpen. The Red Sox will send Teddy Stankiewicz to the mound to counter Skoglund. Stankiewicz has struggled this season for Salem, as he currently stands at 1-7 with a 4.06 ERA. First pitch from Wilmington, Delaware is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.

PEBBLES OF KNOWLEDGE:

Things went from bad to worse for the Wilmington offense on Sunday afternoon. After being shut out for the eighth time in 2015 on Saturday, the Rocks did it again and were shut out on consecutive days for the second time this season on Sunday. Another nine-inning scoreless performance also sets a new season-high for consecutive scoreless innings by the Wilmington offense. The Rocks have not scored since Santiago Nessy hit a solo-homer leading off the fifth inning of Friday night’s game, 23 innings prior to the end of Sunday’s game. The Rocks previous high for consecutive scoreless frames was 20, which they set between May 11-13 against Lynchburg and Potomac. They were previously shutout on consecutive days by Carolina on May 30 and 31. A huge part of the struggles has been the Rocks inability to hit with men in scoring position. After Sunday’s game, the Rocks were 2-for-18 with runners in scoring position dating back to June 11 against Winston-Salem. That has been uncharacteristic for the Rocks, as they came into Sunday batting a good .274 (145-for-530) with men in scoring position this season.

Despite the offensive struggles for Wilmington, Jack Lopez continues to hit in the month of June. After batting .230 in April and then following that up with a .171 average in May, Lopez has turned it around batting .400 (14-for-35) in 11 games this month. Lopez has also scored nine runs and knocked in three runs in the month of June, while also reeking havoc on the base paths. Lopez is six-for-six in stolen base attempts this month, as well. Lopez now has his overall average up to .236 with a homer, 12 RBIs, and an on-base percentage of .318. He currently leads the Blue Crew with 18 walks.

Lopez isn’t the only Blue Rock who has found his stroke at the plate. Santiago Nessy went hitless as the designated hitter on Saturday, but he got his legs right back under him on Sunday as he went 2-for-4 while catching for the Rocks. Since going hitless in his first two games with the Rocks after being called down from Double-A Northwest Arkansas, Nessy is batting .333 (14-for-42) with two homers and nine RBIs. Nessy has also done an exceptional job when it comes to handling the pitching staff. Wilmington hurlers pitch to a 2.59 ERA when throwing to Nessy, well below their team-average of 2.98. Wilmington is now 8-6 with Nessy as their backstop.

The Blue Rocks continued to struggle on the road this season. With the loss on Sunday, Wilmington now holds a record of 11-20 away from the Riverfront. That mark stands in stark contrast with their 23-9 record in games at Frawley Stadium, the best home record in the Carolina League. The biggest difference between home and the road has been the pitching, with Rocks hurlers throwing to a 2.34 ERA at Frawley. That number balloons to 3.73 in away games. Rocks' hitters are also struggling on the road, though the difference is not nearly as noticeable. Rocks' hitters are batting .259 at home, compared to .250 on the road. The Rocks struggled on their most-recent road trip, going just 1-6 after losing three-of-four to Winston-Salem and then being swept in three games by the Red Sox. Wilmington scored just 19 runs in those seven games, 11 of which came in their only win of the trip, and 11-7 victory over the Dash on June 10.

THEY SAID IT:

Manager Brian Buchanan

“(We will) absolutely (take our situation). We’re still in it and not by any means out of it. We’re still a first-place team so we’re not going to panic. Some of those games in Winston-Salem, we hit some balls hard and they caught them. Today…I don’t think the score indicates how the game went. Right now, we just can’t seem to get the big hit when we need it. Those guys played well. I don’t think we beat ourselves this series, I think they beat us. I don’t think we played poorly. We could have swung the bats better but those guys made plays when they needed to and they made pitches when they needed to.”

“I think (one big hit could break the slump). We get runners up there and either we’re hitting the ball hard and they’re catching it or we’re just having a poor at-bat and swinging at some balls we shouldn’t. We’re going home and we play well at home and that’s where we want to be right now; to get home and play these guys tough and take our chances.”

“It’s a little awkward (to play Salem six games in a row) but that’s how the schedule’s played out and that’s what we’re going to do. We can’t change it. We should know these guys, we obviously do. We know the hitters now. We don’t know all the starting pitching, but we kind of know what they do and we should be able to go home and play well and, hopefully, get some ground between us and the second place team.”

“We’re fine with pitching, (the rain delay) wasn’t a big deal. (Nick Green) hasn’t pitched in awhile so it was good to get him in there. We’re fine, depth wise, as far as the bullpen is concerned.”

PHILADELPHIA – Delaware North opened Carpenter Cup play with a 12-5 victory over Philadelphia Public Monday at FDR Park in the baseball tournament matching area high school all-star teams.

Delaware North pounded 15 hits, including two each by Appoquinimink’s Brett Willett, who doubled and tripled, Wilmington Charter’s Kyle Baker and St. Andrew’s Donovan Simpson. Hodgson’s Brandon Walter, the first of five Delaware North pitchers, struck out seven in three shutout innings to earn the win.

A seven-run third inning gave Delaware an 8-0 lead and featured Willett’s RBI double, Simpson’s two-run single and RBI singles by Baker and St. Mark’s Andrew Reich.

Delaware North made it 12-2 with a four-run fifth inning highlighted by RBI singles from Conrad’s Brock Nowell and Archmere’s Andrew Orzel and a sacrifice fly by Dante Cautillo of Salesianum.

Rocks Snap Four-Game Losing Streak Behind Skoglund Gem
Torres keys offense with three RBIs

WILMINGTON, DE – Following a road trip that saw the Blue Rocks lose six of seven games, Wilmington got back in the win column on Monday night, defeating the Salem Red Sox 4-1. The Blue Crew improved to 35-29 on the season, while Salem dropped to 33-30. Eric Skoglund tossed seven strong innings, and Ramon Torres accounted for three of the four Wilmington runs of the night in a 1-for-4 effort. The win, coupled with losses by both Frederick and Lynchburg, got Wilmington’s magic number to clinch a first-half division crown to three.

Skoglund cruised through seven frames for the Rocks on Monday, allowing only one unearned run on four hits, walking none and striking out eight. Salem starter Teddy Stankiewicz picked up his league-leading eighth loss of the season. He went six innings, yielding three runs (two earned) and nine hits, while striking out a single batter.

The Rocks got the scoring started in the bottom of the third inning with a pair of runs. After Dexter Kjerstad reached on an error by first baseman Sam Travis to begin the frame, Logan Moon singled to put runners on first and second with no outs. Carlos Garcia bunted the runners up a base, and then Torres plated them both with a double, giving Wilmington a 2-0 lead.

The Blue Crew added to their lead in the bottom of the sixth. Mauricio Ramos led off the frame with a triple, his second of the year. Cody Stubbs was next, and he lifted a fly ball to left that was deep enough to score the tagging Ramos. After another hit two batters later, a single by Jack Lopez, Stankiewicz got Cam Gallagher to ground out to end the frame at 3-0 Rocks.

Salem finally broke through against Skoglund in the top of the seventh inning. The first man up was Travis, and he singled. Two batters later, Skoglund tried to pick Travis off of first base, but the throw got away from Robert Pehl, and Travis reached third on the play. Wendell Rijo took advantage of the two-base error, as he followed with a sacrifice fly to bring Travis home with the first and only Red Sox run of the game.

Wilmington didn’t waste any time getting the run back. In the bottom of the seventh, Moon walked with one out, and Garcia followed with a base hit that got Moon to third. Torres was the next batter, and he grounded into a fielder’s choice that plated Moon, giving the Rocks a 4-1 edge and ending the scoring for the evening.

Wilmington and Salem continue their three-game series (the final one of the first half at Frawley Stadium) on Tuesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m., and fans can listen to the broadcast on 89.7 WGLS-FM.

PEBBLES OF KNOWLEDGE:

Thanks to a two-RBI double from Ramon Torres with one out in the bottom of the third inning, the Blue Rocks’ longest scoreless innings streak of the season came to a close. The offensive drought had reached 25.1 frames before the Torres double. The previous season-long streak of scoreless innings for Wilmington was 20, which stretched from May 11 to May 13 against both Lynchburg and Potomac. The streak also included back-to-back shutouts at the hands of the Salem Red Sox on Saturday and Sunday, giving the Rocks nine shutout losses in 2015. Wilmington was only shutout a total of eight times a season ago.

Despite the offensive struggles for Wilmington, Jack Lopez continues to hit in the month of June. After batting .230 in April and then following that up with a .171 average in May, Lopez has turned it around, batting .410 (16-for-39) in 12 games this month. Lopez has scored nine runs and knocked in three more during the month. He is also wreaking havoc on the base paths, as Lopez is 6-for-6 in stolen base attempts in June. He now has his overall average up to .241 with a homer, 12 RBIs, and an on-base percentage of .321. Lopez is currently tied for the team lead in walks at 18 with Logan Moon.

Eric Skoglund managed to get through seven frames yet again for the Blue Rocks, the fifth time he has done so this season. In four of those five games (including tonight), the lefty has gone exactly seven innings, with the lone outlier coming on May 29 at Potomac when he threw an eight-inning complete game (though he picked up the loss in that contest). Skoglund was the first Wilmington pitcher to go at least seven innings, doing so for the first time back on April 29 against Myrtle Beach. He is 3-1 in games where he completes at least seven this year. The Blue Rock pitcher with the most seven-inning games after Skoglund is Alec Mills, who has three such outings under his belt.

The Blue Rocks just got back from a seven-game road swing, during which they played four games against Winston-Salem and three against Salem. The road was not kind to Wilmington, as they lost six of seven during the trip, with the lone victory coming in game three against the Dash. The road has been a troublesome place for the Rocks in general this year, with their record standing at only 11-20 in games away from Frawley Stadium. The Blue Crew are a completely different team in the First State, however, as their 24-9 mark in Wilmington is the best home record in the entire league. The biggest difference between home and road this season has been the pitching. Wilmington hurlers are throwing to a 2.27 ERA in home contests, while that mark balloons to 3.73 away from Frawley. The offense has been better in Delaware as well, with Rocks batters owning a .262 average at home, compared to a .250 mark in away games.

THEY SAID IT:

Manager Brian Buchanan:

“(This was one of Eric Skoglund’s) best starts, it is up there as one of them. He threw the ball well. He threw some good changeups and some sliders that he has been working on. He also controlled his fastball very well.”

“(Eric Skoglund) had a blister so we scheduled (Luis Rico) behind him just in case if something happened early on in the game. (Skoglund) was fine the whole game, he felt it a little bit in the last few innings.”

“I don’t think (Eric Skoglund would have pitched into the eighth inning.) He got his work in and in last couple of innings he left his pitches up. He looked like he was getting a little bit tired so (seven innings) would have been it (even without the blister.)”

“(Luis Rico) was very good today, he came in and was aggressive with his fastballs and struck out the best hitter in the league (Sam Travis) with a real good slider.”

“No (I don’t think there is a mental reason with Rico’s splits home and away.) (Frawley Stadium) is not a hitter friendly park. If you look at our stats, offensively, also they are probably a little lower here. Pitching is probably a little better but I have not seen the splits but 3.70 (ERA) is still pretty good.”

“(It helps the offense) when the pitcher gets into a rhythm and not on the field very long, offensively it helps. It also helps us defensively when a pitcher is working fast and pitching strikes and the fielders don’t fall asleep or get lazy.”

“At this point we just need to handle our business. I don’t think (these games) are must-wins but it’s coming down to the point where every win counts. I guess you could say they are must wins but that is too much pressure to put on the guys, this game is too hard. I talked to them and told them to have fun and don’t press, don’t press for the game, let the game come to you. Tonight they swung the bats well and pitched very well.”

“I have a theory (about why we are can score runs easier at home.) When they are playing here (at Frawley Stadium) it is a bigger park, we were preaching line drives. When we get on the road I think they try to do more than they are capable of, just because they want to get their power numbers up. Sometimes they get too aggressive on certain counts. When they come home they know the park and they know they need to hit line drives and keep the ball out of the air.”

Starting Pitcher Eric Skoglund:

“I kind of changed my approach a little bit, honestly. My last three or four starts, I’ve been able to go deep in the game but, unfortunately, I’ve been getting hit a little bit in the sixth, seventh, and eighth inning. I tried to change my approach a little bit as a pitcher and establish the curveball a little bit earlier in the game so you have to respect all of my other pitches. I think that was a big part of (my success) tonight.”

“(Having Luis Rico behind me did not affect me) at all. I always want to go as deep as I can. He was behind me, he did an unbelievable job to close out that game and I tip my cap to him.”

“If you establish (your fastball) early in the game they have to respect it. (The credit) goes to Cam (Gallagher). He did an unbelievable job calling the game. I give him the credit.”

“All of the catchers here are unbelievable. They’ve been doing a great job and there’s no one that I like better than the other. Me and Cam just did a great job tonight and, yeah, I’m just glad we got that win.”

“(I’ve been working slowly because) I’m just trying to separate each pitch. If I make a mistake pitch, I don’t want to take that to the next pitch. That’s what causes bad pitches and that’s what those guys capitalize on. I’m just trying to slow it down, go at my pace; I’m the one with the ball so I’m in control of the game.”

“The hitters did a great job tonight, the first inning through the last. They came out and competed and wanted to win and that’s huge.”
