30 Smyrna @ William Penn 13

and with their QB going out the end of the first half... Smyrna ran them over with the wildcat... WP might be just a tad overrated on D,, Hell Sallies ran the same 2 plays and put 30 on them. Well I thougth they were overrated anyway.. Its not last years team

Not sure teams that make it to the semi finals are overrated but either way Smyrna was very impressive. They physically beat Penn, winning battles up front and playing great defense. i thought they would struggle in those areas but they actually excelled .

Making the semis or top 4 in DE D1 is being in the top 4 of 18 teams...standards have to be incorporated.. The Delaware D1 State Championship is no more than a conference or league championship in most states. Not saying DE hasn't or doesn't have great football teams but this year I don't see one

No one has put Smyrna on a regional or national stage. They can only play the teams in front of them. And compared to those teams, they are pretty good.

read the quote I was responding to He was Talking about WP being in the semis.. but none the less my comment is true....regardless of the DE team "Good" is a relative term.. Relative to your competition...

Raven, give it a break for the love of Pete. On a "national" level Alabama has lost a game this year. So has Ohio state. The "new" national power WVU even has lost- even with "Delawarean" power

For all that shade that got thrown my way all season... I feel pretty good right now...

Props to Smyrna. They really overcame a lot today and surprised many doubters. I don't think just about anyone on this board would have picked them to win if we would have been told they would only have scored 22 points half way thru the 4th quarter. Looked like WP ran out of gas in the second half to me. Smyrna won a hard fought gut check game in the trenches. Hats off to their coaches, players and fans. I will be rooting for them in the Chip.

If I was told Smyrna would be down 13-0 late in 2nd and their QB got carted off I would have said game over.... Running Knight in the wildcat was brilliant... but in retrospectt that was the plan for Red Lion if Sills went down so I should have expected that

Great coaching,,, having a plan in place when all hell breaks loose..when your all state qb goes down and you proceed and adjust... Says a TON about Smyrna's coaches on a lot of different levels. No substitute for great coaching.
yep.. coaching and the kids will to win,, A kid like Knight ready to take the game over and the O line switching gears as well as their defense stepping up ... It was a special performance by the whole program coaches and players

They've been doing that the whole season. Mostly on the goal line and extra points. Used it a lot against Dover on a windy night. I think Knight scored 5 times that night.

Wasn't surprising to those that have seen Smyrna all year .

Do not discount their will to win... That says a lot about a program bought into a coaching staff.. Their is a belief in their program. There is a trust..

"Will to win"

So William Penn isn't coached to win? Or they didn't want to win. It's a football game that both teams wanted to win. Smyrna won because they played better.

no one said that...but Smyrna overcame being down 13-0 and their QB getting carted off the field,, They epitomized the will to win.. That is not saying WP did not want to wn... Yes WP got out played the second half. and it wasn't because Smyrna had better talent..

Toughness and will to win does play a part.. We all want to win at kickoff.. But the toughness factor and will to win is in the off season and during the week... That does play a part.. Smyrnas kids believe.. Sallies kids believe.. It should be a great game.

Is this staff former red lion/Eca guys?

Is this staff former red lion/Eca guys?

The offensive coordinator is.. He was the WR coach at UD and before that worked on the Oakland Raiders Staff..While at Red Lion he was the QB coach but when Coach Day left he took over as OC.. While working as a teacher at Smyrna... When Judy came in it was a brilliant move on his part getting Marks to run the O..... The only issue with that O is you need a good QB to run it every year not something regular high school teams have the luxury of every year,, but with school choice I could see them having a run on them..

Fan....IMHO, the Eagles not only played better than WP but they were also the better team period.
....Then to be down and lose a kid who should be in player of the year consideration.....Smyrna imposed their will on WP and WP was badly outcoached from that point forward.

And that was pure heart and guts

My observation of the game...overall i think i was a little disappointed. But before anyone bashes me, let me explain my reasoning and to first say that I have been routing for both teams all season. I like Smyrna's style of play and i was really looking forward to the clash with Wm Penn's defense. So i am not a "hater" of either team.

The game was nothing like i had imagined...a high scoring free for all. Maybe that was a good thing because as much fun as the 76-56 Smyrna game was, i like some defense to go along with my football. So i was impressed that Penn was able to shut Smyrna down most of the first half. Penn wasnt allowing much both from run and pass, but Smyrna was a little off as well it seemed, especially when the penalties started happening. I was a little disappointed with Smyrna's discipline regarding the mouthing off to the refs. I don't care if the refs are missing holding calls, it hurt your team big time getting back to back unsportsmanlike penalties...that can't happen. But their kids, so i just shook my head that Smyrna was helping Penn. Then my disappointment turned to Wm Penn not capitalizing more in the first half. I believe they dominated that first half, t least most of it with ball control and good defense and Wm Penn should have been up more points. I must also give Smyrna credit for not giving up and playing tough, especially after the injury. I think Penn really woke up Smyrna with that injury because from that point on Smyrna dominated the game. My hat goes off to Smyrna, i was impressed with their second half performance. I was impressed with Penn's defense in the first half, but what happened in the second half. The most disappointing part was that Penn couldn't score. I don't want to take anything away from Smyrna's defense, but is it just me or did Penn seem to run the same play up the middle about 50 times. After the first 2 series i thought Smyrna will never stop this big kid. Then Smyrna kept taking him out at the knees. But Penn seemed to keep calling it. I'm no offensive coordinator but it seemed like they could have hit GRONK (#4) over the top all day, total mis-match. I'm no coach and i don't want to seem like i'm bashing Wm Penn's play calling. But coming in, it seemed that Smyrna's defense was suspect. Don't get me wrong, i know the best game plan was certainly ball control for Penn. Maybe i'm just not giving enough credit to Smyrna's defense i guess.

So afterwards i was little disappointed overall. It seemed that the overall theme was each team being a little disappointing for half the game and impressive the other half. I was hoping for either both teams being impressive over the entire game or one team more dominant than the other. Either way, Smyrna did what a good team does, it wins regardless of the circumstance. Wm Penn is a good team, it just didn't have enough to win a game that it seemed was winnable.
