With the 2018 Delaware High School football season approaching, who are your preseason top 5 teams in Division 1 and Division 2??? Also, if you are aware of any key returners/ key transfers please post! #LetsTalkFootball

Division 1
Middletown
Hodgson
Smyrna
Dover
Sallies

Division 2
Delmar
Woodbridge
DMA
A.i. DuPont
Caravel

Division 1:
Hodgson
Middletown
Smyrna
Sallies
Dover

Division 2:
DMA
Delmar
Howard
A.I.
Woodbridge

Division 1

  1. Middletown- returns their QB, always reloads
  2. Smyrna (lost their workhorse(knight) still has some key pieces, Judy has them rolling.
  3. Hodgson- solid year last year, returns almost everyone
  4. Central- lost some key pieces( Barnes brothers will keep them in the mix...
  5. Tech/Dover- (lost a few very close games last year. Tech returns their whole backfield (QB & RBs) and has a big, solid line, they also added a few key transfers on offense and defense. Dover will compete, they have arguably the best RB in the state and a great athlete at QB....can their line improve??
Division 2

  1. Woodbridge- will be state champs...NO DOUBT AT ALL!
  2. Delmar- returns a solid group(defending state champs.
  3. DMA- RB will keep them in the talk
  4. Friends- always has depth
  5. Laurel- surprise team (well coached)

Every time I have a conversation with someone about football, I hear a new name transferring to St. Mark’s.
Also the number of incoming freshman is 180+ and climbing. I think the last 3 or 4 freshman classes was around 100.

I would think they will be in the mix this year.

St. Mark’s won’t win much. Sometimes they say you need the billy and the joe to be able to play. I think they have that but I think they took a major step back at coaching. Going off of track record on this one.

I think St. Mark's will be fine with Wright. This is his alma mater after all, I think more effort and care will go into the program, just like Dooley will bring all his experience to St. E. Both schools will be D2 powers in due time.

This but the opposite

There have been a decent amount of transfers from what I am hearing this off season.. Will have to see who shows up where and who can get waivers

no names at this point.. wouldn't want to draw attention to any kid as they go through the waiver process.. so at this point just rumors ;)

I do know Caravel has 17-18 freshmen coming out for football this year.. twice their normal amount which bodes well for the future. I have no idea about the caliber of players they are but know a good amount of them are from the CYO. I don't know much about the CYO other than its a Catholic league.. I can assume they are players that St Marks is used to getting?

Over the last 4 years, a good number of the cyo kids attended DMA. I know one of the players who received a scholarship (It was the big lineman) came from the cyo league. And that quick rb from DMA is from there also.
The DMA program has definitely improved.
Good to hear about Caravel. With the shape of the economy, maybe some of these students have other options for school.

Any names of note?

And zappa, care to elaborate on "opposite?"
Just don't share the same optimism about those programs. Think St. Marks downgraded as a coaching staff and faces a challenging schedule. Have not heard many positive things from people who have worked with Dooley. Think he faces a challenge there. Also a tough schedule.

Nothing personal - it's just like...my opinion man.

RR,
I do not think the waiver process is easy to follow. I thought kids had to sit a year.
Also, Terre Taylor became the new principal at St. E's. She was the asst. athletic director for DIAA. A position she had held for less than 3 years.
Interesting that she stepped down.

Definitely not easy to follow..DIAA doesn't post their meeting minutes until 3 months after the meeting and even then they don't name names lol

Kids have to sit if they transfer after the first day of their *correction Junior* year unless they get a waiver. Only one time transfers. There are also other exemptions that don't require a waiver hearing such as changing residence etc... I follow the minutes and DIAA is definitely way more lenient on waiver requests than they were say 6 or 7 years ago.. Bottom line is if push came to a shove if the kid is legally enrolled in a school and in good academic as well as disciplinary standing they should be able to participate in any extra curricular activity the school offers.. This was already tried by the Supreme Court of FLA and ruled the FHSAA could't not prohibit students legally enrolled in a school and in good academic standing from participating..

When you have school choice it is what it is.. In my opinion DIAA has it backwards. If a kid transfers via school choice they should not be made to sit automatically simply because they played a sport at their previous school.. The "DIAA" should have to prove the transfer was for athletic advantage not the other way around .. People change schools for many reasons and the kids simply having played a sport at their previous school does not prove the move was made for athletic advantage JMO

Taylor has been heading up the realignment plans with vigor and been getting shot down.. That may have something to do with it.. Her last request was to have a pilot 3 tier program for boys and girls basketball only.. lol

If there is interest I can start a DIAA meetings thread and post the interesting things happening in the meetings. Can do a report on waiver approvals and declines as well lol

I don't have a dog in the fight, so I wasn't trying to start one, I was just curious. That said, I can agree that St. Mark's and St. E haven't been the beasts they used to be, but there is room for growth in D2. Aside from Delmar and Woodbridge, nobody looks super imposing, but Caravel can change that with the right kids. I'm a Howard grad so I follow Flight B closely and nobody in that conference should scare anyone, and definitely nobody in the Diamond State is scary.

RR thought that the new transfer rule was can transfer upbto start of junior year now. That’s why so many juniors enrolled at St. Marks this year. Could be wrong but I thought that was a new change.

I believe you are correct MIK forgot about that.. also why there are far less waiver hearing requests this summer.

. There also has been discussion of allowing kids to transfer back to their public zoned school at anytime without penalty but that has not passed yet

here is the current transfer rule

2.4.3.1 Unless one of the exceptions found in subsection 2.4.4 of this regulation applies, a student who has previously participated in interscholastic athletics that transfers to a DIAA member school shall be ineligible in all sports that the student previously participated in during the preceding 180 school days. The period of ineligibility shall be one school year commencing with the first day of official attendance in the receiving school. The period of ineligibility shall continue to the next grade/school year, if necessary, until the total number of school days in the school year has passed.

2.4.4.1.4 Previous interscholastic athletic participation - A student who has previously participated in interscholastic athletics may transfer one time during his or her first or second year of eligibility at the high school level without loss of athletic eligibility provided that the student meets all other eligibility requirements, including subsection 2.4.7 of this regulation.

I wouldn’t count Caravel out in DII or Sals in DI

I wouldn't count AI out in D2 either.. In fact they are a favorite in my opinion..Same schedule as last year with Howard being the only threat but I believe AI goes 10-0 into the playoffs..

Top 3 are pretty set

Woodbridge
Delmar
AI
(in any order)

depending on what three emerges from this set(one will be outside looking in)

Caravel (tough schedule will have them chasing points again)
Howard
Laurel
St Marks

then the two weak schedule league teams who will get in. most likely it will be

DMA
Friends
