Baynard

It's been a couple months since everything went down with Baynard Stadium and as I regularly drive by it I have yet to see any changes. Do we have to go another year with those horrible visitor side bleachers and an outdated stadium? I could be wrong and there may have been "committee" meetings but what the Sals proposed seems far more beneficial to all in the moment and in the long run.... anyone have an update on this???

I don't think anything is going to occur for a while. The "committee" is probably upset that Sals came up with a great idea. The "committee" is probably trying to top it and make it their own idea with a better plan.

Everybody on that committee should be forced to stand in front of everyone who uses Baynard and explain why Sallies' plan upset them so much because this is ridiculous.

What upset the opponents the most was the fact that newly renovated Baynard would not be available for every sandlot team in the city to use. Hell, somebody sinks 20 mil into a stadium and only a few can use it, nah !

By all accounts, last night's public meeting at Warner about Baynard was an absolute disaster. The irony of the Potters being mistrustful of Salesianum is hilarious.

Potter's wife, the esteemed city treasurer really went over the top with this doozy....
"City Treasurer Velda Jones-Potter, wife of State Rep. Potter, urged the working group to review the revenue Baynard could bring in, the reason she suspects Sallies wanted to manage it.

"Seldom do they do it just for the philanthropy," she said."

Well Velda, if there is a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, how bout you give up your paltry city salary in exchange for all that avalanche of money from Baynard fees and concession revenue. Fair trade, right.? My advice to my alma mater, walk away, to hell with Potter's Field !

Politicians like kickbacks! After they sponsored the initial plan, they realized they probably couldn't get one. So they explored ways to get one, realized the state and city have no money so there would be no kickbacks and the stadium was not going to be fixed and become a complete waste of space. They figured that they might still be able to revive that deal or something close and save face.

Well if she's hungry for money, all she has to do is stage another fake concert. Maybe at Baynard if she's so inclined.

And yeah, if I'm Sallies, I tell the city to go sit and spin. This is embarrassing and now instead of having at least turf and some decent bleachers for the 2017 season, The dump is just going to get worse. The Potters are garbage.

I like Sean Greene's editorial. His solution is the best.....just go back to Salesianum.

Here is one issue. Maybe the Slowskys don't have access to the full $20 Million that they had in November.

The city hasn't managed or contributed to Baynard since 1972....and they are going to start now? Yes, it's their property but first the County had to bail them out and now the State. As the article says the state agency DNREC has done a nice job managing Baynard. The state or county leadership would have done this deal in a minute. The City Council and Mayor agreed on this deal in November only to have the "public hearing" brought up at the last minute.

Maybe the Sals should walk away and do a deal with the Brandywine school district at Brandywine HS.

You're probably right Bummy, and in all honesty, even if Sallies did have access to that same 20 mil now, why in God's name would they want to do a deal with the Redding Building Remedials? Like Father Kennealey said in the News Journal article, people feel burned by the city. Potter and his clowns can bury their careers at the 50 yard line of whatever's left of Baynard by the time it's all over.

Sorry this is the reason why I have no faith in some of our some called elected leaders. What this is really about is they want someone to pay for a brand new stadium so they can run it. It's welfare in it's simplest form! There are some many issues with what's going on it not even funny. They have no interest in the youth of Wilmington and I'm sorry to say that because of people of Wilmington who keep electing these morons are getting what they deserve. Like the article states if they were so interested in having a place were local teams can play why is Eden park such a disaster.

If I was Sal's I would hold out until the city is bankrupt and the stadium is condemned an then offer or petition the court to buy Banyard out right, and would never allow any city access ever!

Bummy; I like the idea of a partnership between Brandywine and Sallies. I think Brandywine taxpayers might like it too

From Rep. Potter's Newsletter "Salesianum School is a good School in our City, but I just believe we should maintain our asset and its control.".

Another thought to expedited this; since Wilmington wants to maintain and control Banyard and since the state will have a $395 million deficit and it currently costs the state $150k a year. Call/petition our state representative and senator's and demand to save our tax dollars by turning maintenance back over to the city and see what the City Treasurer and State Rep. Potter think about that.

Just a thought. Maybe, just maybe Sallies could step up and be the bigger player in all of this. Extend the offer, one last and final time. I know there is zero reason for Sallies to make the offer, but there is no fault in being right twice.

Mark Holodick won't even let charters breathe BSD air. However, you do have two Principals and an AD who bleed Salesianum "Blue" working at Brandywine. So, maybe just maybe....

My sense is that Brandywine wouldn't be able to get the local community buy in for the lights for night games. Bummy is just dreaming.

If Sals can't play @ Baynard ( even if it's just for the upcoming season ) , do you think they just rent the bigger / nicer Stadiums available on a particular Fri/Sat night ?

How much would it cost to rent UD? and before you snicker, divide that by 20 million and tell me how long that gets them a lease for.

The state should just sell Baynard to Sallies. Allow Sallies to pump whatever money they want into the field and all. It would be the best facilities up north. So then Howard, DMA and a couple other schools would have to pay Sallies to use the field, and with those upgrades easily DIAA will want States/Conferences and other events held there so the money would be going right back to them.

Good idea except the state manages and operates Baynard but it is owned by the City of Wilmington. If this were just a state issue t would be simpler.....

With all the Sals alumni around and supposedly 20 mil. Why not purchase or lease some land at the riverfront, build a first class stadium, and then The big "S", Howard, St. E's, Wilm charter and DMA can use it as their home field. All can share expenses and games can be played Friday night and all day Saturday. Youth leagues also. I'm sure there is still some land there to build on. Everybody can celebrate at one of the fine eateries right there, even when the slowskies loose..........Don't wait too long.

Great idea in theory BlueHen, but they're actually about to build another hotel down there and there's still some discussion about adding an arena on to the Chase Center, so they're just about out of space down there.

The discussion of other sites is interesting and even entertaining but Baynard is across the street from the school. They have used the stadium for like 61 years. Why change anything? They have given the City Leaders a great plan. Any other solution other than having the Slowskys pay for the rebuild and have a long term lease is stupid.

By the way Baynard is 7 blocks West of Bummy's boyhood home across from Shortlidge Elementary School. I am waiting for the historic marker.

charlie, thank you. Should I drive up to Wilmington today and place it on the front door?
Thanks for making me laugh.

I understand that. And it is a great tradition. But right now the situation seems to be going nowhere. Stick in the mud. And the season is approaching fast. A stadium at the riverfront or another property would benefit many schools. And could be a possible tournament site. The Sals aren't the only team that plays at Baynard. [/QUOTE]

Wilmington is just as bad as Baltimore with their corrupt criminal activity within their elected officials... Detroit and Chicago as well SMH
