If any of you who side with this must have never coached. There are many things you can do to control the scoring. If the one player had scared you that much that only an 80 point victory was comfortable, then you really do need to look at yourself. Here are a few things you can do. 1. Stop pressing. 2. Stop contesting every inbounds play. 3. Stop jumping passing lanes. If you are that afraid of them scoring a basket, keep 1,2 and ,3 up. Now once you have taken the ball from them there are a few things you can do to keep the score down and help your team learn, help the other team learn, and maybe not look like assholes to the entire basketball world, with the exception of a few on here. 1. Run an offense. Don’t release players for the full count leak pass. Allow the other team to get back and set a defense and then again go back to #1, run an offense. Have the awareness that those poor kids can’t even practice. Help them. That’s where the Sportsmanship piece comes in. 2. Great opportunity to practice another defense besides the two you run. If the other team gets a shot, it presents a great opportunity to practice rebounding and transition offense, beside the bomb. Here’s a novel idea, play a passive press and help those poor kids work on breaking it??
All of these thoughts are what High School coaches are expected to do. To humiliate and embarrass are no where in the Brandywine School Districts “Coaches Expectations”.
Merry Christmas to all and a special one to St Thomas More.
