DIAA Meeting

Listening to this, I’m gonna once again say how idiotic some of these people are. Donna Polk has clearly stated that if they don’t address the official pay increase issue now, there won’t be a season for any sports. But some of these people keep backtracking because they wanna talk about the out of season coaching.

if you give the people on this forum the same agenda, I can 100% say that we’d have this agenda and meeting done an hour ago.

OMG over an hour on one issue well two kinda..

No worries M-towners not a shot they get to your complaint emails today.. 🤣

Per Sean "DIAA now going into board rules. Saying they will not address anonymous sources of violation claims. A name needs to be behind the accusation."

This is a bit of a game changer in that most these type of complaints come from within by a disgruntled parent who's kid may have been displaced by the "new recruit/transfer". They don't want to be made public in fear something may come back on their kid if it is found out their parents squealed.

No worriesM-Towners season bout to start and all talk will be over and time for teams to put up or…….

This Gunn guy is something else.. finally got his time on the soap box and going all out..lol

per Sean Greene tweets

La Mar Gunn now speaking to the board about racial inequities in high school officials. Complaining about not getting a response until now. Says there is a "good ole boys network" capping new officials

Points out an 80 year old official was the head referee of a state football final. Also says a Black man has never been the head referee of a state football final. "Who wants to work in these conditions when you don't have a fair shot."

Gunn calling for the North and South football officials getting on the same page for the number of officials for each game. Wants 7 instead of 5 or 6. Criticizing lack of oversight and review unless there's a complaint

Gunn is calling on DIAA to use high school or even college students for lower level games to help with the referee shortage.

Gunn says he has an 8-person crew willing to work a Thursday game for the price of 5 to show that more officials makes the product better. Refs would be mic'd, players would be identified (not sure permitted at NFHS level)

Donna Polk says he would have to go through a process to create an officials association for this "bonus" crew.

Gunn: "If you don't have quality officials, what's the point of going through the heat in pads?"

Gunn tells the DIAA Board the Middletown-Smyrna championship game had referee mechanics favoring Middletown. Believes positioning of officials led to calls in MTown's favor.

Gotta love the lady at the end with the public comment claiming she is being discriminated against by the board because she is a woman and the board is mostly men. That she doesn't get called on as much as the men and she got a lawyer..ughh .. what a mess this DIAA is.. complete lack of leadership IMHO

I had no love for Kevin Charles but the man could run an efficient meeting..

Sean Greene

@SeanGreeneWDEL

3:49 - Meeting adjourned. After hearing another 5 minutes of public comment from Trina LeClerc opining about the never-ending Out-of-Season Coaching debate, and Wendy Kite on getting the officials raises passed.

I think he blew his whole spiel with that last one..lol
He made some good points, but got way off topic. The item on the agenda had to do with discrimination, not 8 man crews and the position of the umpire. He could have stepped up, asked why nothing has happened in the many, many months since he lodged the complaint, gotten his answer and moved on. The board chair needs to step in at some point and keep the focus on what is on the agenda.

There was an agenda item seeking 8th grade participation at 3 schools. It turned into a discussion about whether that favors the northern schools - despite one of the schools being Early College - and is another form of recruiting. Stick to the topic. Add it as a discussion item for a future meeting.

And now the cloud following Middletown football continues for at least another month. These complaints are not going away.

Yeah the 8th grader opposition was odd. I mean it's not like it has been approved and happening in this state for at least a decade and didn't Del Mar and Laurel get approved for it a couple years ago even though their 8th graders aren't technically in the same building or campus really?

I believe that was Red Lion hate personally but whatever.. That should have been an easy vote approved and moved on besides why was Red Lion on the list anyway I thought they have allowed 8th graders for awhile.

The Ref discrimination item has been on the agenda for at least the last two meetings (June and July) but they lost quorum before they could get to that item.

I'd have to do some research, but I believe 8th grade eligibility was added for the benefit of the small public schools downstate. Even the guy from Milford said at the meeting that several JV programs in Kent and Sussex would not exist without 8th graders.

They have been allowed at the small privates as long as on the same campus upstate for awhile. At least 12 years or more. Remember David Sills? Obviously the most high profile football 8th grade varsity starter. There have been many 8th graders wrestling varsity at the upstate privates for a long time as well.. Stanford, Caravel. etc...

How does one go about getting their case heard by DIAA...emailing the DIAA director hasn't worked.

the words "lawyer" and "discrimination" seems to get their attention..

if you don't want to push those buttons then is there anyone on the board you know and can cozy up to to help you out?

What about Jed Bell? He is the Coordinator for Interscholastic Athletics for the DIAA now.

Do it the old school way. Find out where he likes to hang out, buy him a few beers and lay out your case and see if he will get you heard or at least on the public comment docket.

Well you could always tell them you have girls who identify as boys who want to play, some boys who identify as girls on the team as well and that you have changed your name to the FCA Woke Bucks..

That should get you right up in there.. just saying of course

Coaching Out of Season Regulation passed

Here is what it is

I haven't read through and dissected it to know what the changes to 1040 are. Maybe someone knows in more simple term as to what is now allowed or not allowed?

This ones interesting.

9.3.2.6 The number of returning student athletes to whom the coach provides instruction at the nonschool athletic activity, program, or team shall not exceed the maximum number set forth below (9 for football). If a coach provides instruction to both sexes in a sport, the maximum number of returning student athletes shall not exceed the maximum number of returning student athletes for each sex (e.g., up to 8 girls and 8 boys in outdoor track and field). For modified versions of the sports below (e.g., 7-on-7 football and 3-on-3 basketball), the maximum number of returning student athletes shall not exceed 80% of the number of players that would constitute a starting lineup in the modified sport.

*SO basically a coach can run a 7v7 program/team/training but only 11 players can be his returning players so I suppose the others will be his recruits? lol

*this would be outside the scope of the NCC 7v7 that has a special exemption for school teams to participate and it's own rules.*
