I just was informed that Dickinson high school is cancelling there varsity football season. Total shame. If everything I hear about Dickinson & McKean is true, they should combine the two schools. Heard they even opened a middle school at Dickinson to help keep thing going there.

I am OK with Red Clay's charter and magnet school strategy. That obviously has had a tremendous impact on their traditional HS's. It is time to consolidate McK and Dickinson and to reopen Wilmington HS. Go Red Devils!

That sucks.. I assume everyone on their schedule gets a fft win and 4 pts?

Howard
McKean
Brandywine
Caravel
Tower Hill
AI Dupont

The good news is no ones Homecoming game got cancelled well except for Dickinsons

As of now McKean's Homecoming, AI Senior night and I believe this Thursday may have been Howard's Homecoming if they have one no listing on website.

I see now. I just saw the Back yard Brawl part didn't finish reading that it was Mckean Homecoming. Being the game vs AI was at Dickinson I assumed it was Dickinsons Sr night

Looks like McKean should be able to move homecoming game back 2 weeks vs AI

The programs and schools I grew up on being sports powers are fading away. Still remember the '92 Dickinson team that ran over everybody on their way to the D2 chip. I guess the Glasgow/Christiana merger's about to have some company.

Red Clay - Government subsidized white flight. Six high school. Three thriving, three dying.

I think the NCC Tech schools are hurting RC schools more than Charter, DMA and Conrad or most likely a combination of it all

There are 5 programs in state history that have won Division I and Division II football championships:

Middletown
Seaford
Glasgow
Christiana
...and Dickinson

Sad what's happened to 4 of those 5 programs.

It's not just one or the other with Vo-Tech schools and Charter schools it is the whole process of school zones and choice.

Middletown grew so they were primed for success
Seaford people moved away. Kids that grew up in Seaford in the 80s are now living up north or out of state.
Glasgow enrollment declined but still has athletes (Glasgow and Howard or mirror image athete wise) just need a coach to keep kids in line and system in place to win.
Christiana has taken the biggest hit in enrollment for the Christiana School District.
Dickinson is a product of bad zoning and choice. A chunk of their enrollment is from the City and most of those kids choice out to other schools (Conrad, AI, McKean, Vo Tech and Brandywine School District) because of the status of the school.

This is sad-
...gotta feel for the kids/coaches and all involved in the program for putting out the effort/preseason and 1/2 a season.........especially the Seniors!
I know it would potentially create a controversy but those kids should be allowed to play somewhere else immediately if they want to.......its certainly no fault of theirs that they no longer have a team.

Regarding past history.......this is a damn shame and it has been for a while.....a once proud program has come to this.

That is probably a good idea for next year. Baltimore has a couple of small public schools that combine for football and other sports. DIAA could allow some schools to combine for football. I know its not traditional but at least the kids can play HS football and be somewhat competitive. You could let the kids from McKean and Dickinson form one team and still keep them in D2 and it wouldn't upset the apple cart at all

This is kind of what I heard they want the third division to be about. The really small or non-competitive programs would still be able to play some ball.

Make D3 9 or 8 man football like they do in the mid-west so teams can have the numbers to field a team

Last year I proposed a McKean - Dickinson Consolidation. I offered that the new school should be named
McDick. This idea was before its time and was rejected.

Look at the attendance zone maps for Dickinson and McKean---half of their zones are families who are sending their kids to private or charter schools, and the other half know the school is left with a rough population so a lot of them try to get to vo-tech's or try to get into a charter, choice into Conrad, or choice into BSD.

Delaware falling in love with private and charter schools is destroying the public school system, plain and simple.

Bussing has killed public schools for years. I'm in the Dickinson attendance zone. No way in hell would my kids go there.

Problem is too many school options up there. Kids can spread out and go where ever they would like. Nobody elects to send their kids to the public school system anymore. McKean has a great school but no attendance and Dickinson has made vast improvements over the years.
To combine them would be a huge waste of $$$ between the radio, green house and other programs at McKean vs the Programs like AB and others at Dickinson.
I really like the combine sports idea, allow students to be bused over to one of the schools and practice together. Yeah it will eliminate the Dickinson McKean rivalry but atleast the kids will have a team to field and could be competitive in D2 with both schools as one.
It's a shame to see one of my high schools going down so quickly not even 8 years later...but that's the times.

Quick question......because they cancelled their season, does that give everyone on their schedule a forfeit win? Or an open date that said team must fill?

Northwestern used to be like the schools were talking about here they had a strong program once

Northwestern-Forest Park merge exciting for football players

Wow Forest Park I remember them coming up for 4 years and playing St. Elizabeth in the late 90s. St. Elizabeth played them both times at Blue Rocks stadium and Forest Park came in like Remember the Titans beating on their thigh pads and singing. They were huge, fast, and athletic except they must never have seen wing t football before because they got caught on all the misdirection.

You get the 4 points unless you replace it with another game. Now that they pro rate points per game played I don't know if it would make a difference even if they didn't count the points

Something similar happened last year. Seaford forfeited to the team they were scheduled to play and played St Andrews instead. The team that got forfeited on got 4 plus they the winner of the seaford st andrews game 4. Dont know if that stood but the team that got forfeited on did def get 4

I guess like this game the points for eaither team is moot and neither team will get to 7 wins so bonus point for their opponents is moot as well

Dickinson had a long history
Of great coaches who had long tenures
Lennox,Cartwright,apostolico

The team that forfeited to Milford got zero points. I believe Seaford got the four points for the win. Since this game had no impact on playoff seeding, nobody followed up on it.

Anytime a sport or season is cancelled it's sad. Had a buddy who worked in Delaware Economic Office a few years back. He said that he wasn't on board with all of the charter schools up north due to the fact that its impacted local government in terms of wiping out the schools. Guess this is what he meant by that...

Ahh Charter Schools, it won't be too long before that legal freight train gets rolling in Delaware, I believe. The ACLU filed a complaint a few years ago and have heard nothing back to my knowledge.
