During the post game recap, WDEL sportscaster Don Voltz mentioned that he will soon be “retiring”. I can’t help feel that this was motivated by the takeover of WDEL by a media conglomerate that was announced a month back. Several other long time staffers at the station may also have been affected. This, along with the laughable shrinkage of the NJ means less and less HS sports coverage. I always liked Voltz. A good sportscaster and a gentleman. Dam shame.

I agree, Don Voltz does a good job and always has. Hope he can stay around and keep doing high school sports. BTW, I also think Bill Harmon is very good as the color commentator.

Takeover had nothing to do with it. Don had said last year that this season would be his last.

I really hope new management continues with the local coverage. WDEL has been involved for many years.

We've been lucky to have Voltz and Len Holmquest and Bill Pfieffer before him. Also loved Bob Kelley doing UD football. I would think if WDEL goes on that Sean Green would be next up.

Unless I'm wrong I don't think there's radio coverage for Kent / Sussex...???

...and now that we have the Internet we can hear WDEL clearly from anywhere.

Voltz also does the morning sports in drive time and does an outstanding job.

I have really enjoyed listening to Bill Harmon doing color. Not being a basketball guy, I have learned a lot from Harmon. Kevin Reilly has also done a good job with color on FB games.

Way back in the day, I think a guy named Dan Casey did Sallies games and then moved on to WNRK and did the Jackets game.

Coverage from their website is great, radio not so much, in and out reception

The local radio coverage is solid in NCCO. Both WDEL & Fox Sports 1290 games are available for free through internet connection, and both do a nice job covering the best NCCO teams (though WDEL leans toward the private schools).

ESPN 930 covers Milford football, but, beyond that, I don’t believe there’s any coverage downstate.

Hey everyone, this is Don Voltz. Just letting all of you know, that indeed, the sale of Delmarva Broadcasting to Forever Media had nothing to do with my decision to retire. I had planned to retire at the end of 2017 but was talked into staying awhile longer. During the course of 2018, I decided to step down in 2019 at the end of March after 33 years at WDEL. I was hoping I would end with at least one good championship game and I got two so I am satisfied. I may have done my last game but we'll see if Forever Media wants to continue covering high school football and basketball. If so, I would be happy to continue doing that...otherwise I will happily spoil my grandkids, golf and spend time with my lovely wife...and not have to wake up at 4:15am any more.

"but we'll see if Forever Media wants to continue covering high school football and basketball"

Don. that sounds pretty ominous.

Not necessarily. We just don't have any insight as to what they want to do.
The sale isn't finalized yet so we just don't know.
