Dover?

Any chance Bill Collick would make a return to the area? Form DSU HC, knows the area....may be a hard sell to leave the Beach area though.

I heard something about Freddie Johnson possibly wanting the job, especially because his son is graduating from Lake this year. That would be interesting though, because he's "The Man" down at Lake and has really turned around that program.

Rich Kotite was spotted eating at a Burger King in DOVER yesterday. It might not mean anything but you never know. He has been itching to get back into coaching.

Freddie Johnson would be a real interesting choice. He seems very happy at Lake, so I would suspect it would take a substantial offer to pry him out of there.

Having a team that runs a flexbone attack would be amazing and could change DE Football around, If Dover runs a Flexbone Option attack, I'd be rooting all the way
Totally agree. Seems to be a perfect fit at Dover with team speed etc. Certainly works at Ga Tech/Ga Southern/Navy/ etc.

It takes a special kind of QB to run the flexbone / option well. Those QB's are usually pretty rare.

More special than a spread qb??? What is harder to do run with the ball or pass the ball? Don't buy it. Option QB can be repted out easier than a spread passing qb. It's more about coaches not knowing how to teach it than qb not being able to run it.

I don't know if he would have taken the job but did Dover pass on Rahsaan Matthews 3 years ago? If they did, that was a big mistake. The man was DE HS FB coach of the year at Pencader a few years back. Howard won the D2 title this year with RM as OC.

My sense is now that he is BBall coach that at Howard he wouldn't leave but he would be a perfect fit for Dover FB.

Probably wouldn't surprise me if Rahsaan took over the Howard football team within a couple of years anyway. Coach Ritter's working on his 16th season (time flies, whew) and after winning a state title finally, I'd be surprised if he feels like he has anything left to prove or achieve as a coach.

They did pass on Mathews, and so did William Penn. I believe he also was the OC at Caravel and won at least 1 Chip, before he took the job at Pencater

Maybe can bring back Coach Brown. Good coach and had a good crew with him too. Didn't win a state championship, but teams were competitive and regularly in the mix. Thought the coaching staff cared more about the players than they did about winning, not a weakness for high school athletics IMO.

There were quite a few posts on this board when Jones took over- posts 'bout how Jones was going to be bringing discipline and getting players to come out for the team. Had a pedigree of success and whatnot.

Maybe that's just the hopeful welcome all new coaches get- part of the culture.

Fact is- Jones had some early success with a team Coach Brown built (plus 2 that came with him) and after that...

Yes. I don't doubt Coach Jones tried to instill that discipline.

With that said, Coaches need COMPLETE backing by admin...they cannot have their legs chopped out from under them when dealing with kids. I'm not saying that Dover has done this (I wouldn't know) but it's safe to say that without all of the following you will not have a successful program:

1) Great Leadership (Coaches) to make the football decisions and create the right culture
2) 100% Support from AD/Admin to support the personnel decisions (Coaches dealing with players)
3) Good athletes

We know Dover has athletes. So it leaves the other 2 parts up for questioning.

I'm going with 2:

Professionally I never seen a new hire search were you select a person, get board approval which means it's now public information, don't name the hire and then have them turn it down or something else happens and then have to start over. Usually if you going to let somebody go the AD or admin has a short list of replacements or have a general idea what their looking for. It looks like there maybe too many hands in the pot. This is not the first time it has a happen, if I remember the Superintendent and H.S. Principal hires had drama. It looks like everyone not on the same page over there.

This a great job for the right person. Dover has the athletes, facilities and trust me the district has the resources to hire whomever they want.

I can assure you that Coach Jones had all of the support he needed from the administration. Both financially and admin backing. He got whatever he wanted, and ran his program his way. He hired who he wanted, got whatever equipment he wanted (including a $30,000 sideline communication system from Coachcomm. No one told him who to play or what to run. He was free to implement his system his way.Whatever results Coach Jones had as the DHS FBC were his and his alone. No one who is familiar with the situation would tell you he had his hands tied in anyway. It really was quite the opposite. I cannot speak to the current hiring processes as I am no longer involved with DHS.

So if you no longer involved with DHS, why are you so sure the new admin had his back? Yes, I sure the old admin supported him, but things changed that's just the facts.

Good point! I can only go by what I did and saw as the AD at Dover during that time. There has been a significant change in leadership at DHS (New Super, new Principal, new AD). I know principal and AD, and I am positive they did what they thought was right for the program.

everything trickles from the top down and it seems like that was the issue... Good luck to all those applying for head coaching position and to Coach Jones on his coaching future.
