Rankings

DI

1. William Penn 6-0

2. Salesianum 5-1

3. Smyrna 5-1

4. Middletown 4-2

5. Mount Pleasant 5-1

DII

1. St. Georges 5-1

2. DMA 6-0

3. Lake Forest 4-2

4. Friends 6-0

5. Howard 4-2

Glasgow 22 Lake Forest 18…….Lake continues to win close games. The Spartans are on a 3 game winning streak but have only won those 3 games by a total of 12 points. This game should be another close one with possible huge playoff implications. G-High in a tight one.

Caravel 24 Silver Oak 19……..Caravel is having a down year but the Bucs are 2-0 against Silver Oak the past 2 years.

St. Georges 31 St. Mark’s 14……..Nobody except for William Penn has really slowed down the Hawks on the ground this season. St. Georges rushed for 380 yards last week against rival Hodgson led by JR RB Gary Brightwell with 181 yards in a 47-0 blowout win. Since their opening loss to William Penn (33-12) St. Georges has gone 5-0 outscoring their opponents 198-28.

Cape Henlopen 28 Caesar Rodney 13……Dillon Adams threw 3 TD passes last week for Cape in a 35-14 defeat of Dover. That was the 4th time this season Cape has scored more than 30 points. CR on the other hand has only scored 26 points total in their last 3 games, all losses. Cape defeated CR last season 35-20.

Laurel 21 Milford 20………The Bulldogs have lost 2 close conference games to Indian River (28-18) and Lake Forest (18-13). This week they pull the upset win over Milford.

Middletown 34 Mount Pleasant 13……Mount is having a surprising season sitting at 5-1 but this is one of those games where Middletown makes a statement.

Sussex Tech 46 Polytech 0……..Sussex Tech looked very ordinary without star RB Patrick Griffin last Friday night losing to Smyrna 42-0. Griffin should return and so will the Tech offense.

Salesianum 42 Dover 14……..I can’t help but think of the 1988 State Championship game between these 2 teams and won by Dover 20-13 when Dover plays Sallies. The game this year won’t have the same drama but the Senators always seem to pull an upset every year when you don’t expect it. Since 2004 Sallies is 6-0 against Dover. Not sure of the health of Colby Reeder who had to leave last week’s Sallies win over Concord. If he’s unable to play the game could potentially be closer but the Sals win either way and get ready for a showdown with William Penn next week.

Smyrna 42 Sussex Central 13……..Smyrna totally dominated Sussex Tech last week blowing out the Ravens 42-0 behind the running of RB Will Knight (166 yards 2 TD) and the passing of Nolan Henderson (389 yards 4 TD). The real story might be the improvement of the Smyrna defense. The Eagles since allowing 76 points to Salesianum have given up only 20 points in their current 3 game winning streak defeating Dover, Howard and Sussex Tech. Sussex Central has back to back conference wins over Cape Henlopen and Caesar Rodney. The SC defense hasn’t allowed more than 19 points since a week 3 loss to Queen Ann County 42-19. The Golden Knights will need a huge effort from that defense to have any shot in this one.

Woodbridge 19 Indian River 16…........Anything can happen in the Henlopen South this year and Woodbridge on their homecoming knocks off Indian River. Woodbridge has 3 losses by a total of 13 points. Losing to Friends 28-23, Lake Forest 9-7 and St. John Paul (VA) 25-19.

Brandywine 12 Dickinson 8………Dickinson hasn’t beat Brandywine since 2004 and both teams are winless this season. Somebody gets a win in this one.

Newark 35 Charter 16……Newark has suffered blowout losses in back to back games 47-8 at Concord and last week 42-14 vs. William Penn. They should rebound against Charter.

Hodgson 34 Mckean 14……..Hodgson is a long shot to make the playoffs but getting a win against Mckean would be a step in the right direction.

Appo 27 Delcastle 14……….With a win Appo gets to 4-3 and prepares for crosstown rival Middletown.

Howard 40 Christiana 8………Howard should chalk up another win and improve to 5-2 with Glasgow and Mount Pleasant up next.

DMA 49 Red Lion 7………….Thumbs down to DMA for scheduling this game.

William Penn 35 Concord 13…….William Penn keeps on rolling scoring at least 30 points in every game this season except 1 which was against Middletown in week 2. QB DJ Johnson has 10 passing TD this season to go along with 4 rushing TD. The Colonials have many other weapons on offense including Chi Chi Amachi 6 TD, Titus Nelson 6 TD, Frank Burton 4 TD, Kamau Floyd 4 TD and Joe Greenwood 3 TD. The William Penn defense has limited opponents to 10 points per game. Concord is 4-2 and is still looking for a quality win on the season. The Raiders haven’t beaten a team with a winning record all season. William Penn has a 18 game winning streak and should push it to 19 heading into the Sallies matchup next week.

Delmar 39 Seaford 0………..Delmar gets their 1st win of the season.

Archmere 30 Conrad 28……..A year ago Conrad was 5-1 with 4 games to play and was crushed by Archmere 42-0. This year the game will be much more competitive but look for the Auks to pull the upset at home. Archmere is 4-0 vs. Conrad since Conrad has resumed varsity football winning those games by an average of 40 points.

Tower Hill 39 St. Andrews 6………….Tower Hill rolls over winless St. Andrews.

Friends 28 Tatnall 14……….Friends is the deeper team and gets another regular season win running their regular season unbeaten string to 16 games. Friends has won 5 out of the last 7 against Tatnall which includes a 28-6 victory last season.

A.I. DuPont 24 St. Elizabeth 22…….Both teams are 2-4 and it should be a close game. Slight edge to AI.

Last week: 19-3

Season 91-30

Given the top heaviness in statewide football can anybody think of a game that can legitimately be called an upset? Originally, I thought Mount over Newark but in the rear view mirror no.

Flight A is a Joke.. Seems to me every year there are 2 teams out of that Conf fighting for a Championship and they win allot of them as well. Middletown - Newark - Wp many state titles between them big three and Concord has a few I think at the Div II

You just defined top heavy

My problem isn't with the teams it's the way the conf is set up. What about the teams in flight a that have no shot? I can't stand the 8 game conference schedule in flight a. I don't want to watch Middletown and William Penn beat up on charter or Delcastle every damn year. What good does that do anyone? Have a 6 game conf schedule with 4 non conference games. Better match ups and more competitive football.

"Have a 6 game conf schedule with 4 non conference games. Better match ups and more competitive football."

Idea of the year! The lopsideness in Division 1 has made the State Tournament anticlimactic. The only new "face" we will have seen is Smyrna. Everything else is same old same old. Would be nice to see some of the better locals venture out of state for a competitive game once in a while. MT did this a few years back with DeMatha.

I like the OOS games but you have know the landscape which changes... I don't think St Marks knew what they were getting into when they scheduled Paramus...

I would love to see a second component added to the determination of D1 or D2...competitive balance. You can start with enrollment and thats maybe half or 35% of the determination. The second part is how competitive you have been in football over the past "x" amount of years...maybe 3 or 5 years. You weight the two factors together and it determines if you are D1 or D2. I'm even okay with basing it all on competiveness. So the hope would be that teams like St Georges and Hodgson would slide up and Charter and Delcastle would slide down.

I also think that conferences shouldn't be any bigger than 6 or 7 teams. If there are, then you shouldn't be required to play each team every year in football. This way no team has to play more than 6 conference games. Hopefully it would encourage more competition of unfamiliar foes...like upstate versus downstate.

Im torn on the idea of a third division mostly because i'm not sure there are enough teams. (3 divisions means roughly 18 teams per division). But i wouldn't mind having a lower division so less competitive teams can play teams more their strength.

I say make all playoffs with 8 teams. I know in D1 that puts nearly half of all D1 teams in the playoffs, but who cares. Why give a team a bye week. Sure you can say that a team like Sallies or Penn earned it, but i would rather see them play and give two other teams a shot. Like this year, i don't want to see a team like Wm Penn sitting the first week of the playoffs. Give the #8 team in the state a shot. Most years there won't be a huge difference between #6 and #8.

And just a pet peave of mine...tweeks the playoff pts calculation to better determine seeds. (for example i don't want anyway to have a team like Tower Hill or Conrad getting a high seed this year...). Also, lets not count out of division or out of state games in the playoff pt determination. If you want to play a team out of state, fine. It doesn't hurt or help you. Same with playing a team out of conference. Go for it. But no extra points to DMA for beating Charter. Your points are determined by games against teams in your division. So if you play 7 division games, your total is divided by 7. This will encourage out of division or out of state rivalries but it won't hurt you or benefit you.

RR - i agree about St Marks. But i for one...(and i'm betting you would too)....enjoy seeing a team like Penn playing Paramus or maybe more realistically playing a top 100 school out of state. The same way Sallies has done over the years. Say what you want about ECA/RLCA, the one thing i enjoyed was seeing Delaware kids against big name nationals schools. I guess the risk in a sport like football more than any other sport, is injury. But its great for the kids and the fans. I am not a Sallies fan, but i always route for them when they play out of state.

And if i'm elected D1AA president....OOS games will be encouraged, but not apart of the playoff points calculation. So St Marks can try their hand at Paramus...but it wouldn't effect their playoff determination. On the flip side, Sallies could play a rivalry game against St Marks....and it not hurt their playoff calculation either.

Somehow; I'd like the points system to be reconfigured or more weighted to the opposition strength. Right now, it is very basic. I think the Selection Committee likes it that way. I believe Texas uses or used to use a system that has a proprietary index based on the Dunkel Rating as a factor. Not all Division 1 or Division 2 teams are alike.

I don't like the fact that Flight A is stuck w/ 8 conference games neither but I would have to say that it is the only fair way...you best believe that come tournament time you will always have at least one team complaining that it wasn't fair because Team A had an easier conference schedule than Team B because they didn't play a certain team or vice versa. For example what if there were 3 teams in the top heavy Flight A this year w/ William Penn, Middletown & let's just say Concord. What if William Penn beats Middletown, Middletown beats Concord but Concord doesn't have William Penn on their conference schedule, then Middletown has the possible argument that they had to play both teams but those teams didn't play each other which could have potentially created a 3-way tie if Concord were to beat William Penn. In almost any competitive sport teams in the same division/conference have to play the same team in their respective division/conference the same # of times to make it an even playing field. It sucks that they only have 2 out of conference games available but not sure what other "fair" way there is to do it.

Is this mainly a problem with BHC Flt A? I think that downstate is much more balanced. Not sure how many other perennial bottom feeders are in the Henlopen North. Until this year, Smyrna was one of them

J12 - I agree with you that the scenerio would arise that a certain team "lucked out" and missed playing certain teams.

But i dont' want to do nothing because of that. Its certainly possible that the Appo district will be adding a high school in the near future so at a minimum there will be one more team added to BLue Hen A or B. So the problem will get worse where maybe Flight A teams won't have ANY out of conference games. That would stink not having a Wm Penn/Sallies or Mtown/Sallies game. So something should be done. So Back to my "rule" which would be that football conferences can't be more than 7 teams. So if Blue Hen doesn't want to drop teams and keeps adding teams, it will have to divide Flight A into to two conferences. Whether its flight A North and South or East and West or whatever.

Better yet...i would like to see all the conferences SCRAPPED and redone for football. All teams have to be in a conference. If there are 48 teams...have 8 conferences, with 6 teams each. This way every team would have 5 conference games and 5 games against anyone they want. So rivaleries don't have to go away either. There are a bunch of ways to build the conferences. To me it doesn't really matter how you do it. I would love to see upstate and downstate mixed so we see all different teams from across the state. But i realize that could cause a possible travel burden for teams.

Bottom line i would like to see better competition.

20 year history of D 1, only 8 different teams have played for the Championship.
Newark 11x in finals winning 7x St. Marks 3x winning 1x
MT 7x winning 3x WP 5x winning 4x
Sals 5x winning 3x Sussex Central 4x 0 wins
Dover 1x 0 wins CR 1x winning 1x
Downstate hasn't won since 2008 prior to was 1990 and again CR winning, need more competition statewide in D1

All the other conferences aren't the same? You will always have some dominating teams. Who has dominated flight "b" for the past 10 years? Same with HS and HN? Besides Smyrna, the south is mediocre at best. Take the top 8 in D-2 pop wise and add them to D-1. Make 3 conferences including privates. Divide up the power each year by wins. each one gets a bid being conf. champ.1-from the south conf. champ and 4-at large. Total of 8 for the tournament.

Put names in hat and draw them every year! Nothing is going to change anytime soon, as far as divisional make up.

I've finally come to the conclusion that a Division 3 might really be best for DIAA football. There is the same 6 to 8 programs across Divisions and Conferences in the post-season every year and while some teams may never REALLY contend, having the same ones year in and year out is dry.

However, the ADs and schools with the most clout might not go for it because they benefit from the D1-D2 arrangement. We saw how tough of a sell that plan the Delaware State News reported on was.

CC....you are my new best most favorite poster!
Transfers are essential. I heard of guy that transferred a bunch of players in a school, got caught, then transferred them out to his own Christian charter school. Funny story but true
