Ah yes. The 50th anniversary of the first Salesianum - Middletown game is Friday night.

That was a 3-4-2 Slowsky team. The 1969 - 1971 Bill Billings Middletown victories were much more impressive.

Will the Cavs put the running clock on the Slowskys like the Eagles? Oh my.

Middletown is honoring the 1960's football teams at pre game. Should be a great sight. If I'm not mistaken those teams went undefeated? And was the longest streak at that time. William Penn and Newark later broke that with their dynasties but still an accomplishment nonetheless

I was told 71 was the first championship game. Wilmington over Middletown 13-6. What streak? Just curious.

Nevermind, I found this online.

During the Billings era, the team won 53 straight games, which was the state record at the time. The streak was eventually broken in the fall of 1967 by Newark High School, a team that was just coming into prominence. The following week, the Cavs fell to Salesianum 21-18, marking the first time in years that Middletown would lose two games in a row. That rivalry heated up when Sallies won the following year, by the score of 32-16 on Nov. 22, 1968. But in 1969, The Cavaliers came roaring back to win 32-0, then won again in 1970 by the score of 22-7.

HC is too young to remember this. Middletown's 53 game winning streak was ended in 1967 by Newark at MDT. Most of Middletown's wins were against the old Diamond State Conference teams before downstate school consolidation.

In November of 1966 Middletown played Salesianum at MDT. Middletown had a 44 game winning streak going into the game. Middetown won 14-13. This is the 50th anniversary of that game.

Sallies beat Middletown in 1967 and 1968.
Middletown beat Sallies 69,70 and 71.

I was present at all of these games. The critical thing about Middletown beating Salesianum in 4 out of their first 6 game is that Salesianum had like 1200 boys and Middletown had like 200. Middletown in no longer the small rural community. 19709 now has 3 D1 high schools.

Billings was one of the greatest DE HS FB coaches ever.

I am pretty sure I am right on this. In 1969 both Middletown(In transition from the Diamond State to Flight B and Conrad (Flight A) were both undefeated. Both beat Salesianum. Conrad beat Newark who had won like 25 conference games in a row. That is when people like the late Ed Cinaglia and the late Dallas Ashby started a committee that developed the first FB tournament. First one was in 1971. Miss those Wilmington High Red Devils.

Easy...Sally...easy...think you better slow your mustang down. Your way beyond the split rail pasture.
You should take a slowhoof and Lay Down Sally.

Encore post:
Blast from the past, when Brian and Rich Long were around, originally posted on this board March 2003, over ten years later this post still motivates me. Thank you Old Cav.

In 1966 before the first Sallies/Middletown game a lot of us players would go and watch Sallies play. Every time the Sallies fans saw us there they would call us farmers and say that we should be home milking cows.

The night of the first game one of the parents went out and bought some cow bells and gave them to some of the local parents and fans. When we came onto the field they started ringing the bells and it just caught on from then on.

It kind of died out for a few years in the 80's and then started back-up after DiNardo put Middletown back in the winning ways of Billings.

So, all those people who hate the cow bells when they play Middletown can thank Sallies for helping start the tradition.
-----------
I bought my original bell from the Middletown Agway in 1986, it has seen action ever since. Have a great Sallies week and always remember and never forget....

"The day you beat Sallies, the day you beat Sallies in anything, it is a GREAT DAY!" [BDN Battle Plan]
