You would think the success they have in throwing the ball in 7on7, Sallies would open it up more during the season.

I don't think he'll ever change unless some powerful alumni gets their hand in the pot and stirs things up. And I couldn't agree, when he stepped into that semi final game two years ago, the way he managed the game I knew he would be something special for sallies. He's got. Nice deep ball, and the threat to run is deadly because the kid has some speed. I don't think his full potential will be reached at sallies though, I would like to see him in an air raid offense or spread.

No need to change when teams are afraid of the word Salesianum on the front of the jersey and admiring the shiny gold helmets as they are beating the crap out of you. BDN won't open it up unless they play Middletown in the playoffs because he can't let them win by 30+ two games in one season

I hear you voice, and it's crazy how much that is true. So many teams and players enter a game already defeated just Because of the name of the team they are playing.

....and the names on the front of those uni's are Smyrna and Middletown. The Slowskys gave up their air of invincibility when Smyrna came back to win the title game in 2015. They are no longer special....

Hahahhaha, "powerful alumni." From Sallies. Hahahhaha .

I don't know if county cops have that type of pull (because the most successful Sallies grad is probably a town/county cop)

That had to be the worst coached game in the long career of BDN. Squandered his timeouts that killed them at the end of the first half when they could have gone up by three scores and the infamous called last play in OT that even a non football fan in Uganda could have guessed.

Powerful alumni.....every school, at least I think has that select few of alumni that helps with cost and pretty much has a little bit of say in what goes on, especially at a school like sallies and its rich tradition.

If said alumni threatens a change at the top, I would think dinardo would do what he has too to keep his job. If they start missing playoffs, or getting knocked out in the 1st round, I would think a change would be in order. That school has twice as many boys to help fill their roster than most schools, they shouldn't have a problem reaching the finals every year.

Uncle that may be true for Middletown and Smyrna but Salesianum still brings fear to a lot of other schools in Delaware

HS they may have a lot of boys but do they have enough of the right type of boys meaning true football players, dogs, grinders, elite athletes that are going to make a difference. I think everyone would agrees you take away Reeder that team doesn't make it to finals. Had a lot of size not a great deal of dominate athletes but he was dominate enough to get them all the way there.Already mentioned how last year was the beginning evidence of decline. How long of a decline is the question?

But that is why football is so great. True team sport need some combination of talent and hard workers at multiple positions to succeed.

The Slowskys program is over. Every week they will face bigger, stronger, faster, more intense, more committed, and more athletic opponents. Say good bye to the legacy of Montero ......

A really silly post IMO. That same school tolerated Jim Brazil for eleven years. Brazil finished two (2) games over .500 in that time with xxx (fill in a number) on his teams every year. I guess the alumni was someplace else during that time.

I agree. Had they not had a 20 year old senior they would have not even made the playoffs that year. He was a monster.

I don't think they're done just yet even if they're in a bit of a lull right now. When you draw from the base they do you'll have a numbers advantage from the start and that's very meaningful. Also not to be forgotten is the fact that they are a private and reclass kids so in addition to having more boys they have older boys. Like the man that carried them a couple years ago

Ps how's he doing at UD? I hope well. I'm sure his older brother is doing his thing but I haven't heard whether the younger (relatively speaking) brother is in line to start/play

"Legacy of Montero"

Damn that was a long time ago. Showing your age, and you can't be that old.

I'm in no way saying you are old with this response but I have no idea who Jim Brazil is. Or his relation to Salesianum.

Brazil was the coach before BDN. It wasn't that long ago. I think he left in 2003. State Champs in '93. Great guy but didn't win a ton of games.

Your post is silly......although he did not share the same success at Salesianum, there were several reasons that factored into that. Delaware HS FB was more competitive at that time-far more quality teams in competition-just look at all the playoff teams/ contenders/title winners that were in the mix while he was at Sallies. Bottom line-his teams played tougher opponents.
Newark and WP were dominant
CR/SM/Dover a force
Christiana won a title and played for another!!!
SC and Glasgow-it was a very competitive field.
And their out of state sked was as hard or harder than it is now!

Let us not forget-this ".500" coach has been quite successful at the NCAA level as an assistant.

Brazill got off to a nice start with a state championship in 1993. The Big S beat an undefeated Seaford team in a rainy championship game at CR.

I was glad when BDN came on board in 2004. It was time for a change.

As far as the current status of the program, I think the Big S are like the San Antonio Spurs. Smyrna has been like Golden State Warriors. Does that make Middletown the Cleveland Cavaliers??

Historically I think the Sals are the Lakers and the Middletown would be the Celtics (depending on your social viewpoint of the two fanbases) and Smyrna is definitely Golden State right now - the new dynasty on the block, but time will tell as far as their legacy goes.

I wouldn't go as far as dynasty for Smyrna. Two years of impressive runs, and a possible 3 is a great feat. But it's not one yet. Certainly has the makings of one, what's going to make them become one is what happens after this year when Knight and Wilson are gone. When the lines gone. If they continue to win 7,8,9 and maybe 10 games a year then yes I think we are in for something we haven't seen since Newark and William Penn won several years in a row way back when.

I personally believe they have the makings of a dynasty. Their pop warner league, and Middle school team constantly wins games every year, so the talent is and has always been there. They now have coaching with experience and knows what it takes to win championships. The town continues to build bringing more and more athletes. And they are starting to build a tradition of winning which is gonna keep kids who normally wouldn't try out, come out.

Smyrna is going to be a intriguiging story these next couple of years and I'm ready to sit back and watch.

Will it though? When they built the high school in Smyrna they built it on enough land to keep adding onto the building in case some years it starts to get over crowded. The problem with MOT is they didn't do that. When they first built the Middletown High school they put it over by that development and shopping centers, there is no room to expand, which created the situation with Appo High. They built that one so that they could add on to it in the future. Then the state came in and wanted to put that 301 expressway in which took back some of that. MOT continues to grow in population so the need for 3 high schools is almost a must.

I think for the time being Smyrna can get by without another high school. 10 years from now, we can readdress if they need one or not. Lol

  1. Some day I hope for an Odessa High School with a duck mascot and team colors the same as Oregon.

  2. Odessa Ducks would have BA uniforms and gear just like Oregon with don't bend-the-brim lids. Well, it's just a thought. I still think it is better than that Jaguar scam a couple of years ago. They should of been named the Elusive Cougar(s).

If Smyrna ever had a second school the perfect name would be Duck Creek Ducks

HS the MOT 3rd high school is happening and Charlie it is located between Odessa and Townsend but I don't think it is going to be called Odessa High. Right now they are calling it Fairview Campus not sure if that is the final name or not. I do not know how zoning and things like choice goes but seems like people are moving to the MOT area faster than the Smyrna area so will that affect Smyrna's numbers any?

Either way after looking at it Smyrna has more time than I thought because they are phasing in the attendance of the new high school so it wouldn't have a varsity football team until 2022.

That wasn't a cougar, it was mylocal & pickles on the prowl, just sharing

MOT Charter is a high school now and fielding varsity sports teams. Anyone know if they ever plan to offer football?
