DMA (7-3) @ Appo (9-1). DMA’s three losses were to 8th ranked Newark Charter 5-0, 6th ranked Mtown 8-6 and top ranked Conrad 2-1. Ironically several of their wins were not so impressive…8-7 win over Mt P, 4-3 win over Tower Hill and a 2-1 win over Newark. Danz pitched and lost in all three of their losses. DMA has decent pitching, they have only allowed 32 runs in 10 games, with 15 of those runs coming in the first two games. At the plate DMA (7 HR’s) and Michael Serafin (5 HR’s) are leading the state in HR’s. But not a lot of balls being hit out of Appo. As for Appo, they are coming off their first loss of the season and fall out of the #1 ranking. Appo hasn’t played since last Thursday so all of their pitchers (Steckline, Stamper and Garrett) are available and rested. Appo’s only other game this week is Thursday against Charter, so they will bring out the big guns against DMA. Appo is only allowing 2 runs per game on average, while scoring almost 7 per game. DMA has Arch on Thursday so they will need to conserve the arms. Last year Appo beat DMA 13-1 with Steckline on the mound against Kohan.
Conrad (9-0) @ Mt P (3-7). Mt P is really struggling this year. They are team that only lost 1 senior from last year’s 10-8 team. Mt P already has 7 losses half way through the season and they still have Conrad and St E on the schedule as well as a decent Newark and Brandywine team. Mt P has played some competitive games against good teams though. They had DMA down 3 in the seventh in game 1 but lost the game in extras. Then game two against Sallies they Mt P allowed 6 runs in the 7th to lose 11-9. They have a walkoff win over A.I. Then play a close one with Appo losing 6-4. Mt P allows Tower Hill to come back beat them. Then they lose to Newark Charter in 11 innings after being 5-1 in the 2nd inning. They get 10 run by Mtown, barely beat Charter in extras, then get 10-run by Hodgson. This is not a good time to play Conrad. Conrad is 9-0. They have strong bats but more importantly they have shut down pitching. Conrad hasn’t allowed more than 4 runs in a game all year. They have 3 shutouts and four more games where they only allowed 2 runs or less. Bradigan is 6-0 (19-1 lifetime) on the mound. But Maxwell is 3-0 and beat Sallies earlier in the season. Nowell has been closing down a lot of the games. 13 total runs allowed in 9 games so far this year. Bradigan just threw a complete game on Sunday, so i’m assuming it will be Maxwell. Conrad beat Mt P 7-4 last year with Bradigan going against Fowler and in 2015 Conrad beat Mt P 12-4 with Bradigan on the mound.
Caravel (7-3) @ Newark (4-7). Caravel plays on the road against its last in state opponent for a while. Caravel bounced back from a three game skid where they lost each game by 1-run. Since then they have beaten 4 straight teams in the top 20 (St Marks, Hodgson, Poly & Smyrna). Caravel has been kind of laying low. I guess you can look at them two different ways. First off, they could easily be 10-0 right if not for three 1-run losses. But on the flip side, they have three 1-run wins as well as a come back win against IR where they were down 7-3 in the 2nd inning (winning 14-9). So they could very easily be 3-7 right now. I guess it depends if you’re a glass half empty or half full kind of person in how you look at this team. Even more confusing in analyzing them is the fact that in 5 of their games (Cape, IR, RLCA, Hodgson, Poly, Smyrna) the scored 58 runs and allowed 29…that’s an average score of 12-6. In their 5 other games (Roman, Sallies, Penn Charter, St Marks & Smyrna) they scored 14 total runs and allowed 15 total runs for an average score of 3-3 per game. Newark is sitting at 4-7 but isn’t a bad team. They have 4 blowout wins over Dickinson, WP, Charter and Concord outscoring them 74-2 in total. Aside from Tech beating them 16-6 and Sallies beating them 7-0, they lost 8-6 to Archmere, 5-4 to Mtown, 2-1 to DMA and 4-2 to A.I. On Saturday they got beat by a good Smyrna team 6-1. Im not saying Newark is built for a playoff run, but they are scrappy team. Unfortunately they have Caravel, St E, Friends, Mt P, Delcastle, Appo and Glasgow left on the schedule. Aside from Delcastle, they don’t have any easy games remaining. Newark kept it close kind of close last year, getting 1-hit but only losing 5-0 despite 5 errors.
Sanford (2-6) @ Glasgow (5-3). Glasgow going for its 6th straight win. Sanford trying to avoid its 3rd st loss.
A.I. (3-5) @ Newark Charter (6-2). Newark Charter still smarting from its extra innings loss to St E last week takes on an underachieving A.i. team.
Friends (5-5) @ Bwine (4-4). Both teams trying to avoid going to a losing record. Friends have lost 3 straight games.
Sallies (8-3) @ Lake (0-9). Sallies have been on a roll with 3 straight wins over Tech, St Marks and out of state St Michaels and winning 6 of their last 7 games. Lake is watching the wheels fall off as they have lost 13 straight regular season games including Monday’s loss to Delmarva Christian 14-6, where they led early 6-1. Lake has lost by 7 runs or more in 7 of their 9 games. They have been outscored 23-102 this year. This is a team that was 9-3 last year before losing 5 of its last 6 games and missing the playoffs.
St E (5-3) @ Tatnall (3-5). After a 1-3 start, St E has battled back with 4 straight wins including an extra innings win over the red hot Newark Charter last week. St E looks for another win as they fight for a playoff spot. St E does not do themselves any favors with their schedule. They have 7 games on their schedule against top 10 teams. SUGGESTION – just play Sallies and St Marks once per seasons. Then maybe your second matchup against them would be in the playoffs. Im all for having a competitive schedule but that’s been 4 losses per year each of the past 3 seasons.
