SUBJECT: University of Delaware Football Partners with Riddell to Utilize New Precision-Fit Helmet Technology
DATE: March 8, 2017
NEWARK, De
l. -- The University of Delaware football team announced Wednesday that its has partnered with protective equipment manufacturer Riddell as one of a select number of colleges at the NCAA Division I level to deploy the helmet maker’s new Precision-Fit technology this upcoming season.
Riddell Precision-Fit is a process that utilizes state-of-the-art 3D scanning techniques to build a completely custom-fitting helmet liner system for individual players.
Among those utilizing this new technology is Delaware redshirt freshman defensive lineman Sal Mauro, who will wear the personalized helmet this coming fall. Mauro will be one of just a handful of NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision football student-athletes who will be debuting the SpeedFlex Precision on the field.
The helmet is the latest innovation from Riddell as it looks to continue to work with football programs on improving athlete protection. Riddell will offer a limited release of Precision-Fit helmets for the 2017 season, with expanded availability for football programs expected for the 2018 season.
“I like how the helmet is molded to fit to your head,” said Mauro, a native of Staten Island, N.Y. (Bergen Catholic HS) who is expected to be a key member of the UD defensive front this coming fall for new head coach Danny Rocco. “There’s no wasted space. The helmets used to be filled with air and sometimes that made it too tight and uncomfortable. I’m excited to see how the helmet feels with the extra padding rather than with the air.”
“The biggest difference is that this helmet is uniquely Sal’s,” said Delaware Equipment Manager Kyle Martinelli. “The helmet he has now you could take off and put on someone else who fits that size measurement. You cannot do that with the Riddell Precision-Fit line of helmets. It’s a true scan and mold of his head, so it is uniquely his. This new helmet produces surface contact that we haven’t seen before. It will be an advantage for him on the field, not only in the way he plays, but in the area of safety. Sal is a great candidate to be one of the first players to wear this helmet because he’s a great communicator. He’s a good sounding board and his feedback is strong. He has four years left to play here and he plays a position that includes a lot of contact.”
The new helmet will provide complete three-dimension customization opportunities by using a seven-step development process.
The first step is for the student-athlete to pick one of the Riddell helmet platforms (SpeedFlex Precision or Speed Precision). Once that is complete, Riddell then uses state-of-the-art technology to capture critical information such as head size and surface.
With the basic specifications of the head determined, the system then analyzes and orients the helmet to athlete’s specific needs.
Next, Riddell uses more software to create the player’s helmet liner system, which includes the players personalized molds, name, and signature. The helmet is then further customized with a choice of facemask, accessories, and team decorations.
Once the helmet is created, Riddell then certifies it for play before being shipped to the athlete.
“Meeting with our local representation and with the University, we felt that Delaware would be an ideal partner to leverage Precision-Fit with its student-athletes,” said Riddell Key Account Manager for the Northeast Region Jeffrey Hartung. “We already have an established relationship with Kyle and his equipment staff, and we appreciate Delaware’s enthusiasm in making this new technology available to its players. We look forward to receiving feedback as the team advances through the season.”
Fans can find out more information about the helmet by visiting www.riddell.com/precisionfit.
Delaware Football will begin spring practice on April 4 with the annual Blue-White Spring Game and Fandemonium event set for Saturday, May 6. Fandemonium will begin at 4 p.m. followed by the spring game at 6 p.m. in Delaware Stadium.

SUBJECT: Wilmington Softball Head Coach Mike Shehorn Wins 100th Career Game as Wildcats Sweep Day Three in Florida

DATE: March 8, 2017
djl

CLERMONT, Fla. - - Fourth year head coach Mike Shehorn captured his 100th career win at the helm of the Wilmington University softball team as the Wildcats defeated Wayne State (Neb.), 12-2, and held on for the day’s sweep with a 4-3 victory against Stonehill at the National Training Center on Wednesday afternoon.

The bats got going once again for the Wildcats (7-5) on Wednesday, as they smashed out 26 base hits between the two games, including 14 against Wayne State in the opener. All the scoring happened in the fifth and sixth innings against Stonehill, with the Wildcats pulling out the close game, 4-3, leaving the tying run at third base in the bottom of the seventh.

The Wildcats found themselves down 1-0 after the top of the first inning against Wayne State and didn’t get on the board until the bottom of the third inning. Meghan Brown led off the inning with a walk followed by singles from Jayme Richardson and Rosa’Lynn Burton to load the bases with no outs. Alyssa Velasquez put the Wildcats on the board first with a single into left field before Kaitlyn Slater added an RBI single as well. A wild pitch brought in the third run of the inning before Whitney DeMora gave the Wildcats a 4-0 lead with an RBI fielder’s choice.

Another unearned run crossed in the top of the fourth for Wayne State but the Wildcats answered by batting around and scoring eight runs in the bottom of the frame. Slater collected another RBI single while Annie Davila added an RBI single of her own. Meghan Brown brought in two with a bases loaded single before an error brought in the final two runs of the inning to make it 12-2.

Starter Brooklyn Lachette finished off Wayne State in order in the top of the fifth to put the mercy rule into effect and give the Wildcats the victory.

Game two starter Caitlyn Whiteside stranded one Stonehill runner on base in each of the first three innings before setting the Skyhawks down in order in the fourth. The Wildcats also left a great deal on base, stranding seven runners on through the first five innings of play. They were able to break the ice in the top of the sixth.

DeMora doubled down the left field line to start the inning before Becca Stanley put runners on second and third with a bunt single and a stolen base. Now with one out, Colby Wyatt singled back up the middle to score both Wildcats, giving them the 2-0 lead.

The Skyhawks answered with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the sixth, cutting the deficit in half, 2-1, with one inning to play.

The seventh inning was led by a late charge for the Wildcats, as they had a runner on first with two outs. Brown came through with a triple down the left field line, chasing DeMore all the way around to score. Katie Edgar followed suit with an RBI single to the pitcher, bringing in Brown for the much-needed insurance run and 4-1 lead.

Looking to close out the complete game, Whiteside ran into trouble as the first two Skyhawks reached base. Now with runners on second and third with two outs, Stonehill got a single up the middle to score both runs and cut the deficit to 4-3. Another single put runner son first and third, but Whiteside induced a fly ball to center to end the game and give the Wildcats its fourth straight win.

Velasquez led the Wildcats with three hits in the first game while Burton, Slater, Stanley, and Brown added two hits apiece. Edgar led the team with three hits in game two while DeMora and Brown added two hits each in the nightcap.

Shehorn is the second Wildcats coach to reach 100 wins in the program’s NCAA era and is now 101-72 overall. He trails only Erin Harvey in the wins column as she led the Wildcats to 157 career wins from 2007-12.

The Wildcats return to action on Thursday when they play Minnesota State Moorhead and LIU Post at Hancock Park in Clermont, Fla. First pitch against MSU Moorhead is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

SUBJECT: Wilmington Baseball Caps Florida Trip with 13-9 Victory over Adelphi

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - - Scoring early and often led the Wilmington University baseball team to a 13-9 victory over Adelphi on the final day of the team’s trip to Florida on Saturday afternoon, played at Paul Demie Mainieri Field on the campus of St. Thomas University.

With the win, the Wildcats (6-5) went 4-3 on their Spring Break trip. The Wildcats finished with 11 hits while scoring 11 of their 13 runs in the first five innings. The Panthers (4-3) tried to make a game of it late, scoring eight of their runs in the final three innings, but the Wildcats held them off to cap their week with a victory.

The scoring started early for the Wildcats as they put a three spot up in the top of the first inning. Two hit-by-pitches and a Mike Annone single loaded the bases with only one out. The Panthers starter continued to struggle with his location, as he hit the next two batters to force in the game’s first two runs. Max Carney then hit a sacrifice flight to right off a reliever, putting the Wildcats ahead, 3-0.

Wildcat starter Sean Deely worked through the Panthers in the first two innings before the Wildcats offense struck again. Lance Gilbert picked up his first hit as a Wildcats with a double down the right field line to start things off with one out. Frank Nigro put runners on first and third with a single before another HBP loaded the bases. Now with two outs, the first run of the inning came in on a wild pitch before Jesse Long doubled to center field to bring in the other two base runners. Rocky Ferrier then beat out an infield single, scoring Long to put the Wildcats up 7-0.

Dan Hyatt singled but the middle with two outs in the fourth to score Lance Gilbert, as two more Wildcats started the frame by each getting hit by another pitch. The Wildcats led 8-0 after four innings and after Deely left a lead off single on first in the fourth, the offense went to work again in the fifth.

Long was hit by a pitch to start the inning before Ferrier walked to put runners on first and second. Now with two outs, Small singled into left for an RBI single before Gilbert reached on a throwing error to allow another run to come home. A wild pitch capped the scoring for the Wildcats in the fifth, as they led 11-0.

The Panthers get to Deely in the bottom of the fifth, scoring an unearned run on a one out single to center before his last pitch of the day was a 6-4-3 double play.

Another hit-by-pitch brought in a run for the Wildcats in the seventh while Joey Cautillo hit a sacrifice fly to score AJ Lerro and give the Wildcats a 13-1 lead. But the Panthers wouldn’t go away easily.

Adelphi started the inning with a single and double for their first run of the seventh inning before another double scored one more. Now with two outs, a wild pitch brought another Panther home before a triple tacked on another run. The Panthers would score five in the inning, adding another RBI single to bring the score to 13-6.

The Panther tacked on two more in the bottom of the eighth inning, using a single and an error to get things rolling. Adelphi finished with a pair of RBI singles in the frame.

Three walks in the ninth inning forced the Wildcats to bring Dan Hyatt from the shortstop position in to pitch with one out and the bases loaded. An error brought in a run but Hyatt buckled down and picked up two strikeouts to end the game and earn the save.

Ferrier and Annone led the offense wit two hits each while Lance Gilbert, Nigro, and Long led the way with two RBI each.

Deely went the first five while only allowing one unearned run in picking up the win. He struck out four batters with only two hits and one walk to improve to 2-0. Hyatt picked up his first save of the season.

The Wildcats return north but the schedule doesn’t get any easier, as they return to action on Wednesday at Millersville. The Marauders were ranked 12th in the latest NCBWA Division II National Poll. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m. in Millersville, Pa.

NEWARK, Del. - - Despite outshooting its opponent, the Wilmington University women’s lacrosse team dropped a 14-8 nonconference contest to Alderson-Broaddus on Saturday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.

The Wildcats (1-4) fought back with a pair of late goals in the first half to close the gap to a single goal, but the Battlers (4-1) turned it on in the second half and outscored the Wildcats, 5-0, to come away with the victory.

Alderson-Broaddus led by as many as 6-3 with 13 minutes left in the first half before the Wildcats received goals from Lashay Ross, Megan Card, and Gabby Spalt to tie the contest, 6-6 with 8:19 showing on the clock. The Battlers responded with three consecutive goals of their own to move ahead 9-6 with 1:31 to play before the break.

Spalt took a feed from Auryonah Nash and beat the Battler netminder to break up the streak of goals from the visitors with only 55 seconds before the break. La’Dae Boykin won the ensuing draw control to give the Wildcats another possession, and Ross paid it off by finishing a feed from Card to cut the deficit to 9-8 with 17 seconds left. Ross then gained possession of the ensuing draw control and raced toward the net with a head of steam, but her shot was wide left with eight seconds showing on the clock.

Out of the break, the Wildcats won more draw controls, 4-2, in the second half, but it was the Battlers were able to find the back of the net. They extended their lead with goals at the 25:24 and 20:08 mark to regain an 11-8 lead. The Wildcats were able to get 10 shots off in the second half alone, but Alderson-Broaddus goalkeeper Fallyn Gonzales came up with eight second half saves to keep the Wildcats off the board.

The Battlers continued to add to the lead, scoring goals with 13:18 and 11:23 left before finishing off the scoring on Saturday with a goal at the 2:56 mark of the second half.

Card led the Wildcats with three points, scoring two goals while adding an assist. She also tied for the team lead with five ground balls while leading the team with five draw controls. Ross and Spalt scored two goals each while also adding three ground balls each. Ross was second on the team with four draws in the game.

Maddie Hurm made 10 stops for the Wildcats while Gonzales finished with 13 saves for the Battlers. The Wildcats outshot the Battlers, 28-27, for the game, but went 1-for-11 on free position shots.

Friday was the first of four straight home games for the Wildcats as they next play Merrimack on Thursday at the WU Athletics Complex. The opening draw is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.

SUBJECT: Penalties Plague Delaware Men's Lacrosse as Win Streak Falls in 13-9 Setback to Binghamton
DATE:  March 11, 2017
NEWARK, Del.
-- The University of Delaware men’s lacrosse squad had its four-game win streak snapped on a frigid day Saturday afternoon as Binghamton converted four man-up goals and committed just six turnovers on the way to downing the Blue Hens 13-9 at Delaware Stadium.
The Blue Hens (5-3), whose win streak was its longest since 2010, fell behind in the third quarter but battled back and cut the lead to 8-7 heading into the final stanza. The Bearcats (4-1), who won their second straight, promptly scored the first four goals of the fourth quarter to take control and move on to the win.
Delaware senior Trupert Ortlieb notched his third hat trick of the season with three goals while freshman Charlie Kitchen scored twice and dished out an assist, Joe Eisele added two scores, and Will Hirschmann netted one goal and assisted on three others. The game was played under frigid temperatures and gusty winds with a wind chill of 20 degrees at game time.
The Hens held big advantages in shots (41-27), groundballs (33-18), and faceoffs (16-9) but Binghamton was efficient, scoring 13 goals on 27 shots, converting on four of five extra-man opportunities, and committing just six turnovers, tied for the lowest amount forced by Delaware this year. Tom Moore led the Bearcats with four goals and three assists.
“We are disappointed in how we played today,” said Delaware head coach Bob Shillinglaw. “Give a lot of credit to Binghamton, they played hard and physical. We made a lot of mistakes and gave more opportunities to them and they took care of those opportunities. We need to come out and get better next week.”
Binghamton jumped out to a 3-1 lead after one quarter but the Hens rallied back in the second quarter as Ortlieb scored twice, the second time with 24 seconds left to send the game into halftime tied 4-4. The Bearcats scored the first three goals of the second half, two on extra-man situations, to take a three-goal lead before a tally by UD’s Kitchen with nine seconds left in the third period cut the margin to 8-7.
But Binghamton scored four times in the first seven minutes of the final quarter, including one on a man-up opportunity, to take control and hold on for the win.
HEN SCRATCHINGS:
• Delaware entered the game averaging 12.4 goals per game and had a streak of four straight games with 10+ goals snapped, its longest streak since 2010-11

• Kitchen has scored at least two points in every game this season, extending his UD freshman record
• The Hens have now committed 10 or less turnovers in three straight games
• Hens continue their four-game homestand next Saturday, March 18, when Delaware hosts Saint Joseph’s at 1 p.m.

SUBJECT: Delaware Softball Posts Comeback Wins Over Winthrop, Campbell at UNCG Spartan Classic
DATE: March 11, 2017
GREENSBORO, N.C.
-- Anna Steinmetz hit a go-ahead grand slam in the seventh inning against Winthrop before the Blue Hens rallied from five runs down against Campbell as the University of Delaware softball posted a pair of comeback victories on Saturday at the UNCG Spartan Classic.
Delaware recorded a 5-4 win over the Eagles and a 9-7 triumph over the Camels, finishing a perfect 4-0 at the tournament while improving to 6-12 on the season.
During the Blue Hens’ first game of the day, Winthrop (11-11) took a 4-0 lead into the final inning following a two-run homer by Leah Young in the fourth and RBI singles by Young and Morgan Lowers in the sixth.
But Delaware rallied in the top of the seventh as after Ali Davis led off with a walk, Leanna Gearhart and Giovanna Kolofer both singled to load the bases. Mariah Kondravy then drew a walk to force home the Blue Hens’ first run, before Steinmetz blasted a grand slam over the fence in leftcenter to put Delaware in front. Winthrop then had a runner on first base with two down in the bottom half of the frame, but after Maddie Antone singled to leftcenter, she was thrown out at second base to end the game.
Jordan Cargile improved to 3-7 after she fired 1.2 innings of scoreless relief while Gearhart, Kolofer and Steinmetz all finished with a pair of hits.
Campbell (15-12) then jumped on top of the Blue Hens by scoring four runs in the bottom of the opening frame, before adding another tally in the second to make it a 5-0 game. However Delaware got on the board in the top of the third as Gearhart legged out a bunt single and Kolofer followed with a two-run homer to leftcenter.
The Blue Hens then loaded the bases in the fourth on a Devon Steiner walk, an Alyshia Dellatore single and an Emily Neal walk, before Davis (above) belted a grand slam to put Delaware on top, 6-4. Delaware added two more runs in the fifth as Steinmetz smoked a solo home run and Neal singled home Steiner to increase the margin to four.
The Camels got a pair of runs back in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run single before Delaware added its final run in the seventh without the benefit of a hit, as Neal worked a bases loaded walk to force home Morgan Schroll.
Taylor Curran then retired Campbell in order, as she tossed two scoreless innings to earn her second save of the year. Cargile picked up her second win of the day after allowing two runs, one earned, in 4.2 frames in the circle. Steinmetz and Dellatore each notched two hits at the plate, while Davis had the four RBI and Steiner crossed the plate twice.
Delaware is scheduled to open its home schedule on Wednesday with a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader against Villanova.

• Steinmetz now has 20 career homers, tying her for second place in UD history along with Kondravy
• Kolofer’s homer was the third of her career
• Kolofer and Steiner have each hit safely in six consecutive games
• The Blue Hens’ four-game winning streak is their longest since winning seven straight from Mar. 30-Apr. 6, 2016

POST-GAME QUOTES
Head Coach Kateri Linville

“It was a tough day for us. We fell short against a quality opponent in Virginia Tech. We had some glimpses of opportunity, but we just didn't convert. As the game went on, we made more stops in the defensive end and we definitely had the speed to create opportunities in transition; we just didn’t play disciplined.”

NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware baseball team capped a historic week Sunday afternoon as the Blue Hens completed a perfect 6-0 week with a pair of wins over Wagner at Bob Hannah Stadium.
The Blue Hens (8-6), who extended their winning streak to six games, opened the day with a 15-7 win in the completion of Friday's suspended game and followed with a 19-6 seven-inning victory later in the day.
In the opening game Sunday, Delaware head coach Jim Sherman won his 700th overall game as a college head coach, including his six seasons as head coach at nearby Wilmington (Del.) University in 1988-94.
Sunday’s games marked the fifth consecutive contest that the Blue Hens produced at least 15 runs, a new program record.
In the six games that Delaware played this week, the Hens batted .406 as a team, scoring 95 runs (15.83 per game) on 88 hits. UD also socked 12 home runs, hit 19 doubles, and recorded six triples. For the week, Delaware posted 58 walks and an on-base percentage of .547.
“Obviously our offense is still rolling,” Sherman said. “This whole series against Wagner we just sort of hit lightning in a bottle, and all the guys hit well. [Doug] Trimble and [Nick] Patten are swinging it great and [Diaz] Nardo is starting to swing it well. Everyone through the lineup is swinging it well. Overall I am extremely pleased with the weekend. I just hope that we don’t get too much snow so we can play next weekend [vs. Penn State].”
In the final game of the series the Blue Hens produced eight first-inning runs, including a three-run home run by centerfielder Kevin Mohollen. The inning was prolonged due to a costly two-out error by right fielder Eric Lauk.
After being held scoreless in the second inning, the Blue Hens touched-up Wagner (1-9) for six runs in the third, two runs in the fourth, and three runs in fifth.
In the final game against Wagner, Ake and Mohollen paced the Hens as both players drove in four runs and scored at least twice. The second game was shortened to seven innings per an NCAA 10-run mercy rule that can be used if agreed upon by each head coach before the game.
In the continuation of Friday’s suspended game, Delaware was finally able to put another win on the board after a 40-hour wait.
The game, which began on Friday afternoon, was halted in the bottom of the eighth inning with Delaware leading 10-4 due to darkness and inclement weather. Due to more weather issues on Saturday, the game was moved to Sunday.
In the win, Delaware banged out 15 hits, including seven of the extra base variety.
Calvin Scott led the Hens with four runs batted in while Ake, Brian Mayer, and Doug Trimble each knocked in two. Among Trimble's three hits was his second home run of the season.
Delaware starter Brandon Walter earned his first win of the season as he allowed just one run in six innings and struck out a career-high nine batters.
On Monday, Delaware will look to extend its six game winning streak when the Blue Hens welcome UMass Lowell (6-6) for a 3 p.m. game. Left-hander Matt Hornich will begin the game for the Blue Hens, with Nick Spadafino due to pitch in relief.

BALTIMORE, MDAmanda Crimarco (Levittown, NY/Kellenberg) and Maddy Chain (Gloucester, NJ/Gloucester City) had four hits apiece as the Rider University softball team swept Coppin State, 6-3 and 6-5, Monday afternoon at UMBC. Crimarco homered, drove in four and scored twice as the Broncs improved to 2-11. Chain also added a pair of RBI’s and a run scored. Coppin State falls to 2-16 with the losses.

After the Eagles struck for two in the second inning of Game 1, the Broncs scored one in the third, three in the fourth and two more in the fifth to take a 6-2 lead. Chain’s RBI single in the third got things started, before an Amanda Jordan (Somerset, NJ/Franklin Township) single tied the game and two more runs scored on another Chain single. Ellie Oruska (Chadds Ford, PA/Garnet Valley) added her second home run in as many days to push the lead to 5-2, before Alexa Feliciano (Thousand Oaks, CA/Oak Park) scored on a Toni Nino (Adelanto, CA/Silverado) groundout to make it 6-2. A Nicole Ullman RBI triple for UMBC in the bottom of the seventh cut the Broncs’ lead to 6-3, but Rider pitcher Emily Oltman (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley) settled down to record the final three outs and close out the victory.

The Eagles again jumped out on top with a run in the first of Game 2, but Crimarco’s three-run home run in the top of the second gave the Broncs a 3-1 lead. Monica Clark (Bryn Mawr, PA/Archbishop Carroll) followed suit with a solo blast in the third before Coppin State used errors, walks, wild pitches and a sacrifice fly to score three and tie the game at 4-4 after four. Rider put its first three batters on in the fifth and scratched across runs on a Feliciano groundout and a Crimarco single to make it 6-4. The Eagles would cut the lead in half at 6-5 with a run in the bottom of the fifth, but the Broncs held on for the victory.

Goldey-Beacom Baseball Falls Twice to University of the Sciences

The first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference baseball games in Goldey-Beacom history did not go as planned as it dropped both, 14-6 and 13-4, to University of the Sciences in Dover, DE.

Goldey-Beacom in the opener eradicated a four-run first-inning deficit with four runs of its own in the last of the frame. Freshman Zach Roseman (Wilmington, DE) laced an RBI single to left and sophomore Calvin Clark (Millville, NJ) sent everyone home with a three-run homer to right.

But USciences (5-7, 2-0 CACC) got four more in the second for an 8-4 contest, courtesy of just two hits with three errors. Pat Hiester had an RBI groundout that resulted in two runs and Ryan Scholey lined an RBI single through the left side.

Wauseon, OH junior Jake Trejo (0-3) permitted eight runs -- three earned -- and five hits over one-plus innings with a strikeout for the Lightning. Freshman John Barkley Jr. (Smyrna, DE) pitched solidly in relief, striking out five and not allowing an earned run over five innings.

Roseman closed with two hits for GBC.

Eric Stratori (1-1) settled down after the first inning and got the win, striking out seven over as many frames and allowing six runs with five hits. Scholey had three hits as he, Hiester and Christian DeLuca all had two RBI.

USciences in game two scored four times in the third for a 5-0 lead, keyed by a two-run single from Nick Amicon.

Junior Edwin Lee (La Plata, MD) launched a two-run homer for GBC (0-12, 0-2) in the sixth inning and freshman Grant Reed (Shenandoah Junction, WV) had a pinch-hit RBI triple in the seventh. Royersford, PA freshman Brandon Ferrie (0-2) permitted seven runs – three earned – and eight hits over four innings with five strikeouts.

Matt Miniconzi homered twice and closed with four RBI for the Devils. Chris Geraci (1-2) struck out six, yielding three runs – two earned – and three hits over six innings.

SUBJECT: Milley, Glover Lead the Way as Delaware Baseball Finishes Off Weekend Sweep of Penn State
DATE: March 19, 2017
NEWARK, Del
. -- The University of Delaware baseball team closed out an 11-game home stand in dominating style Sunday afternoon as the Blue Hens completed a weekend sweep of Big 10 member Penn State with an 8-0 victory at Bob Hannah Stadium.
Delaware starter Kevin Milley struck out a career-high nine batters over seven innings and combined with two relievers to limit Penn State (6-11) to three hits and left-fielder Jordan Glover provided the offensive fireworks with a seventh-inning grand slam.
The Hens (11-7), who swept a doubleheader against the Nittany Lions on Saturday with wins of 6-1 and 5-0, have now won three straight games and closed out the home stand with a 9-2 record.
Delaware earned its first series sweep over a Power Five conference opponent since and posted back-to-back shutouts for the first time blanking LaSalle in consecutive games in 2013.
“I cannot remember a better weekend over the past decade than what we had this weekend,” Delaware head coach Jim Sherman said. “We got three outstanding efforts from (Brandon) Walter, (Nick) Spadafino, and (Kevin) Milley. Even the relievers out of the bullpen did a great job for us. It was just one of those three-game sets that hopefully propels us into conference play.”
Delaware outscored Penn State 19-1 for the weekend and outhit the Nittany Lions 29-10. The Blue Hens led for 24 out of the 27 innings and struck out 35 batters.
The game was close through the first five and one-half innings as the Hens clung to slim 1-0 lead.
In the sixth the Blue Hens exploded for a pair runs and three hits. Nick Tierno led off with a triple into the right-center and later scored on an RBI single by Glover.
Later in the inning, Glover stole second and advanced to third on an errant throw. Designated hitter Doug Trimble followed with a double down the left-field line, scoring Glover.
After Milley ended his day with a 6-4-3 double play in the seventh, the Blue Hens bats came alive again.
Third baseman Diaz Nardo got the Hens started with a leadoff double. After a strikeout, Penn State walked Kevin Mohollen and Tierno to load the bases for the dangerous Glover, who did not disappoint.
On the very first pitch Glover saw from PSU relief pitcher Tom Mullin, the All-American candidate socked a ball well over the 365 sign in right centerfield for a home run. The slam, Glover’s second of the year, upped the UD lead to 7-0.
Kyle Hinton came on to throw a scoreless eighth inning and the Blue Hens added their eighth run of the contest in the bottom half. For the ninth, Sherman turned to Colman Vila who retired the side on just eight pitches, sealing the win and the sweep for the Hens.
During the weekend, UD received 21 innings of shutout ball from Walter, Spadafino, and Milley. The trio allowed just five hits and struck out 31 batters, including 17 by Walter in Saturday’s opener.
The Blue Hens will be idle until Friday when they head down to James Madison for the first Colonial Athletic Association games of the season. The Dukes are currently a CAA-best 14-4 and have won six out of seven and 13 out of 16.
“Going into next weekend, we just need to get the good pitching and the timely hitting that we got this weekend,” said Sherman. “Diaz Nardo is starting to heat up and the middle of the order has been solid. At the top of the order, Kevin Mohollen has been just unbelievable in terms of getting on base and being a catalyst for us.”

Norfolk, Va. (Mar. 20, 2017) --- Sean McGrath threw six solid innings for his first win of the season to lead Delaware State to a 3-1 victory over Norfolk State in the second game of a doubleheader at Marty Miller Field today. McGrath allowed five hits and one run, while striking out a season-high five and walking one to improve to 1-1 . The performance lowered his earned run average to 3.32 this season.

Delaware State opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the third inning. Devin Beverly singled to lead off the inning and advanced to second to on a sacrifice bunt by Tommy Jordan. Delaware State added an insurance run in the seventh when Jordan scored from second base on a two-out error by the Spartans.

Darien Ragins relieved McGrath in the Norfolk State seventh. He retired the Spartans in order on two grounders and a fly out for his second save of the series and the season. Ragins was one of the heroes of the Delaware State’s 5-4 win in the series opener on Sunday, striking out the side with runners at second and third in the bottom of the ninth inning. The performance earned him MEAC Co-Pitcher of the Week honors, the league announced today.

The Hornets outhit the Spartans 9-5 in the nightcap. DSU’s Jared Gillis was 2-for-2 at the plate, while Devenney had two hits in four at bats in the game.

In the opener, Norfolk State’s Devin Hemmerich, a preseason All-MEAC Second Team selection, struck out 10 Hornets in a complete game four-hitter.

The Spartans led 1-0 when the Hornets finally got to Hemmerich in the sixth. Jordan doubled to lead off the inning and scored on a single up the middle by Smith to tie the game.

Norfolk State regained the lead with two runs off Hornet reliever Travis Dill in the eighth. The go-ahead run scored on a one-out double by Tony Leite.

Dill (1-2) allowed four hits and two runs, one earned, in 1.2 innings to suffer the game one loss. Freshman Garrett Lawson was impressive in his first MEAC start for the Hornets. Lawson threw 6.1 innings, giving up one run on five hits. He struck out three and walked two.

Delaware State (5-9) is home for its next five games, beginning with a visit from La Salle on Tues. (Mar. 21). Game time is 3:00 p.m. at Soldier Field. The Hornets will also host Navy on Wed. (Mar. 22 @ 3:00 p.m.) and Coppin State for a three-game series (Mar. 25-26) during the homestand.

SUBJECT: Round Trippers, Strong Pitching Lead Wilmington Baseball to CACC Opening Sweep of Philadelphia

DATE: March 20, 2017
djl

BEL AIR, Md. - - The Wilmington University baseball team started its run through the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference schedule with an important doubleheader sweep over Philadelphia, 4-2 and 1-0, on Monday night on the campus of Harford Community College.

Timely hitting back by a pair of complete pitching performances enabled the Wildcats (8-5, 2-0 CACC) to power past the Rams (2-10, 0-2 CACC). The Wildcats hit a home run in each game, including the only run in the nightcap off the bat of Julian Kurych in the bottom of the third inning.

The Wildcats got on the board in the bottom of the third in the opener with a two-run shot to right by Mike Annone. Starting pitcher Sean Deely ran into trouble in the top of the fourth inning as the Rams put runners on second and third with only one out. The sophomore was able to pitch out of the jam with only allowing one run, getting a pair of ground outs to exit the inning.

But the Rams tied the game in the top of the fifth inning, as Brandon Quaranta hit his league leading seventh home run of the season to center field, knotting the game at 2-2.

Deely struck out eight batters in five inning of work and the bullpen was able to keep the Rams in check until the bats came around again. Dan Hyatt started the bottom of the seventh with a leadoff single before Kyle Fries moved him over with a sacrifice bunt. Rocky Ferrier continued his hot start to the season with a single back up the middle, easily scoring Hyatt from second for the 3-2 lead.

The Wildcats added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning as Frank Nigro got his bat on the ball as Kendall Small was moving from third on the pitch. The RBI groundout made it 4-2 after eight full.

Relievers John Hetterman, Rudy Gervolino, and Zach Frederich all tossed a scoreless inning, making way for Dan Hyatt to close out the contest in the ninth inning. Hyatt picked up a pair of strikeouts before ending the game on a groundout, 4-2.

Gervolino picked up the win with a scoreless seventh inning while Hyatt earned his second save of the season. Ferrier and Kurcyh each added two hits in game one, with Kurych going 2-for-3 with two doubles.

The nightcap was dominated by pitching, as the teams only collected eight hits total. But there was only one hit that mattered.

The Wildcats had a tough time handling Ram starter Abraham Almonte, as he went the distance in the seven inning game, striking out 12 batters while only allowing one walk. But there would be one pitch he would like to have back.

With two outs and the bases empty in the bottom of he third, Kurcyh reached out and launched one to right, easily clearing the fence for a solo shot. It proved to be the only run of the game.

Game two starter Chuck Delagol struck out five in 5.1 innings of work, only allowing four hits and two walks. His day came to a close as a leadoff walk in the sixth reached second on a sacrifice bunt. Micky Foytik and Noah Latshaw escaped the sixth, leaving runners on second and third before handing the ball over to Hyatt once again.

Hyatt again went 1-2-3 in the seventh to earn his second save of the day, picking up the sweep for the Wildcats, 1-0.

Small was the only Wildcat to record multiple hits in the nightcap, going 2-for-3. The home run was Kurych’s first career round tripper.

The Wildcats return to action on Tuesday when they host Kutztown for a single nonconference game at Wilson Field. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m.

SUBJECT: Former Delaware Student-Athletes Mench, Mills Selected to Delaware Sports Museum & Hall of Fame
DATE: March 22, 2017
WILMINGTON, Del.
-- A pair of former University of Delaware student-athletes who enjoyed record-breaking careers as high schoolers in the First State are among 10 athletes, coaches, and officials set to be inducted into the Delaware Sports Museum and Hall of Fame later this spring.
Kevin Mench, a slugging outfielder who earned All-State honors at St. Mark’s High School and later All-American honors for the Blue Hen baseball team before embarking on an eight-year Major League Baseball career, and Kristin Mills Caldwell, an outstanding scorer at Caravel High School who went on to compete for the UD women’s basketball squad for three seasons, were announced this week as inductees into the Delaware Sports Hall of Fame.
The organization will hold its 42nd annual banquet on May 16 at the Chase Center on the Riverfront in Wilmington, Del. Tickets for the event are available at $65 each from Lorrie Alesi at 302-547-6570, phone or text, or online from www.desports.org.
In addition to Mench and Mills, also being inducted are former National Hockey League standout Mark Eaton; Olympic figure skater Scott Gregory; longtime Newark High School football coach Butch Simpson; longtime Caesar Rodney High School lacrosse, football, and basketball coach John Coveleski; national-level race-walker Jacki Starr; U.S. Open tennis official Lois Huggins; former Archmere high school basketball and baseball coach Vince Filliben; and longtime Tower Hill high school track and cross country coach Bob Behr.
The greatest home run hitter in the University of Delaware’s rich baseball history, Mench was among the nation’s top sluggers during his three-year career with the Blue Hens in 1997-99 for head coach Bob Hannah. He earned all-conference honors three times, was a two-time conference Player of the Year, and a two-time All-American. He set UD records for home runs in a season (33) and career standards for home runs (71), batting average (.409), and slugging percentage (.875).
He captured the America East conference “Triple Crown” in 1998 when he batted .455, led the NCAA with 33 home runs, and knocked in 72 runs to earn Collegiate Baseball Magazine National Player of the Year and consensus All-American honors. He led the Hens to a three-year record of 123-45, two conference titles, and NCAA Tournament berths in 1998 and 1999.
He clubbed 89 home runs over eight major-league seasons as an outfielder with the Texas Rangers, Milwaukee Brewers, Toronto Blue Jays, and Washington Nationals between 2002-10.
Mills Caldwell, a Caravel Academy graduate, was the first Delaware high school girl to score 2,000 points in a career. A pitcher for the Buccaneers’ boys state baseball champions, she was a member of the first USA Baseball women’s national team and was the winning gold medal pitcher in the first Women’s World Cup. She currently serves as head coach of the successful Caravel Academy girl’s basketball team.
She played three seasons for the Delaware women’s basketball squad under head coach Tina Martin in 2000-03 and helped lead the Blue Hens to the America East title and an NCAA Tournament berth in 2001 and to consecutive Women’s National Invitational Tournament appearances in 2002 and 2003.

SUBJECT: Delaware Athletics Mourns Passing of Hall of Famer, Major Leaguer Dallas Green
DATE: March 22, 2017
NEWARK, Del.
-- The University of Delaware Athletics family was saddened Wednesday afternoon with the news that UD Hall of Fame member and Major League Baseball icon Dallas Green has passed away.
Green, a star baseball pitcher and basketball player with the Blue Hens in the 1950’s who went on to a long professional career in the Major Leagues as a player, manager, and executive, passed away peacefully at the age of 82 after a long illness.
A native of Newport, Del. and a 1956 graduate of Delaware, Green was inducted into the Delaware Sports Museum and Hall of Fame in 1983, the state of Delaware Baseball Hall of Fame in 1994, and UD Athletics Hall of Fame in 1998. He received UD’s highest honor - the Medal of Distinction - in 1992.
"Dallas was great friend to the University of Delaware and our baseball program,” said Delaware head coach Jim Sherman. “He donated a scholarship in his name and he was at alumni and social events involving the team over many years. He was personally supportive to me and was always available to talk baseball when I needed some advice. He will surely be missed by the entire Blue Hen Baseball family.”
At Delaware, Green posted a pitching record of 6-0 with a school-record 0.88 ERA in 1955 and was also a standout on the 1954 team for head coach Bob Siemen. As a 6-5 center in basketball, Green averaged 9.2 points and 7.9 rebounds per game over two seasons in 1953-55 for head coaches Fred Emmerson and Irv Wisniewski.
He later signed a free agent contract with the Philadelphia Phillies and played in 185 major league games over 13 seasons for the Phillies, Washington Senators, and New York Mets before moving to the scouting and coaching ranks.
A gregarious personality with a famously booming voice, Green helped build the Phillies farm system in the 1970’s and later led the franchise to its first World Series championship in 1980. He managed the Phillies in 1979-81, served as skipper for the New York Yankees for one season in 1989, and later was manager of the New York Mets in 1993-96.
He served as general manager of the Chicago Cubs in 1982-98 and was named Executive of the Year by several news outlets in 1984.
He returned to the Phillies in 1998 and served as a special assistant to the general manager until recently.
"There's very few people who were more synonymous with the Phillies than Dallas, and yet for 15 years he went elsewhere," Phillies chairman Dave Montgomery told MLB.com. "The first time you meet him, I mean, what a presence. He filled the room with his presence."
Green is survived by his wife of 59 years, Sylvia, four children, and five grandchildren. The family will celebrate his life at a private funeral service.

SUBJECT: Felician Answers Every Wilmington Baseball Rally for 6-5 and 8-4 CACC Sweep

DATE: March 24, 2017
djl

LYNDHURST, N.J. - - Felician had an answer for every rally the Wilmington University baseball team put together on Friday afternoon, sweeping the Wildcats, 6-5 and 8-4 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action at Lyndhurst Recreation.

The Wildcats (8-8, 2-2 CACC) threw punch after punch at Felician (10-6, 2-0 CACC) in each game of the doubleheader, but the Golden Falcons answered with multiple runs in the home half of the inning to secure each victory.

In the opener, the Wildcats regained a 5-3 lead with two runs in the top of the seventh, but the Golden Falcons answered with three runs of their own before closing out the game one victory, 6-5. In the nightcap, the Wildcats closed the gap to 5-4 with a four-run top of the fifth inning, but the Golden Falcons answered again with a three-run bottom of the fifth for the 8-4 victory and the sweep.

The Wildcats jumped out to a 3-0 lead against Felician in the opener starting with two runs in the fourth. Dan Hyatt opened the inning with a leadoff triple before Kyle Fries singled through the left side for the 1-0 lead. Julian Kurych was able to beat out a double play attempt with one out, scoring Fries from third base. Hyatt then connected with a two-out RBI single in the fifth for the 3-0 lead.

But the Golden Falcons answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. They received a leadoff triple to start the rally, later starting the scoring with an RBI single to second base. Another single through the right side brought in the second run before the home team tied the game with a sac fly to left.

The Wildcats regained the lead in the top of the seventh inning, getting a sacrifice fly from Hyatt before Kyle Fries followed with an RBI single for the 5-3 lead. But the home team punched right back, using a two-run triple and a sacrifice fly to take the lead for good.

The Wildcats threatened in the ninth, loading the bases with only one out, but Felician closer Dan Naif picked up back-to-back strikeouts to earn the save.

In the nightcap it was the home team that swing first, jumping out to a 5-0 lead after the fourth inning. The Wildcats made things interesting with a four-run fifth inning, however.

Fries started the rally with a one-out single before Regan Hidalgo doubled him home with a shot to the gap in right center. Now with two outs and two on, Kurych tripled to right center, chasing home Hidalgo and Lance Gilbert to close the gap to 5-3. Kurych later scored on a wild pitch, bringing the Wildcats to within one, 5-4.

But just as the momentum swing in favor of the Wildcats, the Golden Falcons answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth, capped by a three-run homer down the left field line for the 8-4 lead.

The Wildcats again got to Naif in the seventh inning, but left two more runners on base as Naif slammed the door for the sweep.

Kurych and Fries led the offense with three hits in the doubleheader. Kurych went a combined 3-for-8 with a triple, three RBI, and a run scored. Fries finished 3-for-6 with two RBI and two runs scored. Dan Hyatt went 3-for-3 with a triple and two RBI in the opener.

The Wildcats have a chance to get back on the field and redeem themselves on Saturday when they host Concordia at Wilson Field. First pitch of the CACC doubleheader is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.

THAT’S ONE: Goldey-Beacom Baseball Notches First Victory in Program History

Goldey-Beacom produced its season high in runs and recorded its first victory in program history with a 14-3 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference triumph at Chestnut Hill in the second game of a doubleheader in Norristown, PA.

The Lightning opened the day with a tough 7-6 loss.

Goldey-Beacom (1-13, 1-3 CACC) in the victory broke a 2-2 tie with two runs in the top of the fifth inning. Ty Williams (Newark, DE) led off by reaching on an error and fellow junior Edwin Lee (La Plata, MD) brought him home with a one-out triple for a 3-2 lead. Sophomore Brandon Abdul (Old Bridge, NJ) doubled the margin with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Lee.

Chestnut Hill (5-7-1, 1-1) made it 4-3 in the last of the frame on Eric Gilham’s groundout, but Goldey-Beacom got that run back in the sixth. Junior Keegan Marsden (Stratford, ON) led off by being hit by a pitch, took second on a sacrifice bunt from freshman Zach Roseman (Wilmington, DE) and reached third on a groundout from junior Jake Trejo (Wauseon, OH). Marsden then crossed home when freshman Justin Hill (Seaford, DE) lined a single to center field.

The Lightning then left no doubt with a nine-run explosion in the seventh inning for the final. Roseman had a two-run single, Williams recorded an RBI triple, freshman Tevin Thomas (Dover, DE) notched a run-scoring groundout and Marsden added an RBI single.

Lee rapped three hits with Roseman and junior Blake Salesky (Aurora, IL) getting two each for the Lightning. Abdul (1-2), who got the first run and first double in team history, now can say he got the first win by striking out seven over six innings and yielding three unearned runs. He and Salesky combined to yield just two hits over the seven innings.

Matthew Kress (1-1) was tagged for five runs – three earned – and five hits over 5 2/3 frames with four strikeouts for the Griffins.

GBC in game one rallied for a 2-2 tie in the top of the second when freshman Hill launched a two-run homer for his first collegiate long ball. The visitors took their first lead, 4-2, in the third courtesy of no hits as junior Jason Rowe (West Hills, CA) scored on a fielder’s choice and Abdul crossed home on an error.

Abdul then had an RBI single in the fourth for a 5-2 Lightning lead, but the Griffins scored four times in the fifth for a 6-5 cushion. Joseph Monaghan tied it on an RBI single up the middle and Gilham put Chestnut Hill ahead with a run-scoring single.

GBC rallied in the ninth for a 6-6 tie, loading the bases with none out before Roseman lined an RBI single to plate freshman Trent Hearn (Bethel, DE). But the Griffins won it in the ninth when Eric Small walked, took second on Jon Baturgil’s sacrifice bunt and scored on Brandon DiBona’s single to right-center field.

Roseman and Hill had two hits apiece for the Lightning. Freshman Brandon Ferrie (Royersford, PA) struck out six over 7 2/3 innings in a no-decision, but Salesky (0-1) gave up a run over two-thirds of an inning.

Matthew Owens went 4-for-4 and Dino Cattai (1-0) got the win despite giving up the tying run in the ninth for Chestnut Hill.

Goldey-Beacom is home Saturday against Post for a noon doubleheader in Hockessin, DE.

SUBJECT: Caldwell Sweeps CACC Doubleheader from Wilmington Softball

DATE: March 25, 2017
djl

NEW CASTLE, Del. - - Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference preseason favorites Caldwell University came away with a doubleheader sweep over the Wilmington University softball team, 5-3 and 12-0, on Saturday afternoon at Asbury Field.

The Wildcats (11-10, 1-3 CACC) struggled to the bats going against Caldwell (8-7, 4-0 CACC), only collecting three hits in each game of the doubleheader. The Cougars came back from a 3-1 deficit in the first game before collecting a pair of six-run innings in the nightcap for the sweep.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth, the Wildcats used three Caldwell errors to gain a 3-1 lead. Rosa’Lynn Burton started the inning by reaching on an error before Alyssa Velasquez put runners on first and third with a walk. Becca Stanley laid down a suicide squeeze to score the first run, and reached base on another Cougar mistake. Now with two outs, Meghan Brown doubled to the gap in left center to score two more, chasing both Velasquez and Stanley home for the 3-1 lead.

But Caldwell was able to answer right back in the top of the fifth, scoring two runs of their own with back-to-back doubles to tie the game, 3-3. The Cougars took the lead for good in the top of the sixth inning, using an error for the go-ahead run and added a sacrifice fly as an insurance run, 5-3.

The Wildcats attempted a rally in the seventh as Kaitlyn Slater started the inning with a single through the left side. But Brown lined into a double play in the next at bat to clear the bases. Whitney DeMora doubled to the gap in right center, but she was left stranded as Caldwell picked up the final out to end the game.

Caldwell’s starter Sydney Ponto struck out seven while allowing three unearned runs on three hits and one walk.

Brown picked up the Wildcats’ first hit of the second game with another double in the second inning, but she was left stranded to end the frame. Things unraveled for the Wildcats from there, as the Cougars scored six runs on five hits for the 6-0 lead.

Caldwell had another six-run inning in the fifth, chasing starter Danielle Bradley and getting seven hits in the inning to move ahead 12-0. The Wildcats went in order in the bottom of the fifth to end the contest.

Caldwell’s starter Jessie Johnston gave up three hits while striking out one for the complete game shutout.

The Wildcats return to action on Sunday when they head to LIU Post for a nonconference action on Long Island. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m.

WEST CALDWELL, N.J. - - Time was the only thing that stopped the Wilmington University women’s lacrosse team on Wednesday afternoon, as its second half comeback fell just short, 12-11, on the road at Caldwell at the Essex Valley Field.

The Wildcats (4-6, 2-1 CACC) were on a tear in the second half, outscoring the Cougars (3-3, 1-1 CACC), 8-2, in the second half alone. But the Wildcats ran out of time, as they were unable to get a shot off after drawing to within a single goal with 55 seconds left.

The Cougars scored the final six goals of the first half to go into the halftime break lead 10-3. The Wildcats’ comeback started right from the start of the second half.

Shawna Chopko controlled the opening draw of the second half and Lashay Ross found the back of the net just 34 seconds to start the rally. Chopko followed suit with a goal three minutes later to bring the Wildcats to within 10-5.

The Cougars brought up the Wildcats’ momentum with a goal but Ross controlled the ensuing draw and sored just 10 seconds later to bring the Wildcats to within five goals once again. Alexis Olsen turned a Caldwell turnover into another goal before Gabby Spalt made it three in a row with a goal with 16:04 left to bring the Wildcats to within 11-8.

Caldwell’s Arden Kassaleh scored her eighth and final goal of the day with 11:33 to play before the Wildcats tallied back-to-back goals to get within 12-10 with 8:18 left in regulation.

La’Dae Boykin had a free position shot with 7:10 to play but the attempt was saved. Boykin then beat the Caldwell netminder but hit the crossbar with 5:26 to play. Caldwell’s Elizabeth Ruedemann would make two more saves, including another free position attempt with 2:12 showing on the clock, before Boykin found the back of the net with 55 seconds to play.

The Cougars came away with the ensuring draw control, but the Wildcats were able to force a turnover and get into the offensive zone with 30 seconds left. But the Cougars’ defense stood tall, forcing the Wildcats into a turnover of their own with 10 seconds to play before the clock ran out on the Wildcats.

Boykin led the Wildcats with three goals and an assist while Ross also finished with four points with two goals and two assists. Chopko and Olsen added two goals each while Megan Card scored once and added two assists for three points. Spalt rounded out the scoring with her one goal.

BENSALEM, Pa. - - Holy Family jumped out to early leads against the Wilmington University softball team, leading to the Wildcats being swept, 5-3 and 6-3, in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Bensalem High School.

The Tigers (12-8, 6-0 CACC) used early runs in each end of the doubleheader before the Wildcats (13-12, 1-5 CACC) scored late in each contest but it was too little too late for the visitors.

Holy Family jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first of game one, using three hits including a leadoff triple off starter Caitlyn Whiteside. The Tigers added a pair of two-out RBI in the bottom of the third off reliever Brooklyn Lachette for the 3-0 lead.

Jazmeen Llamas put the Wildcats on the board in the top of the fifth inning with a two-out RBI, scoring Mirabella Klebart who started a one-out single. But that was all the Wildcats could get in the inning. The Tigers would get that run back in the bottom of the inning however, as they came up with another two-out RBI.

Down to their last at-bat, Becca Stanley started the top of the seventh off with a solo homer to left center. Klebart was hit by a pitch to start a rally, followed by singles from Whitney DeMora and Llamas. Rosa’Lynn Burton hit a sacrifice fly to bring the tying run to the plate with two outs, but Meghan Brown ground out to end the comeback bid.

The Tigers scored single runs in the bottom of the second and third innings before widening the gap to 4-0 with a two-run fourth inning in game two. Kaitlyn Slater put the Wildcats on the board in the top of the fifth inning with a solo homer to left center, but Holy Family gained the run back in the bottom of the frame. The Tigers would also add an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to extend the lead out to 6-1.

The Wildcats tried to make another late-game comeback, getting runners on second and third with two outs. Llamas singled to plate two runs and extend the inning, but Klebart fouled out to end the game.

Llamas went 3-for-3 with an RBI in the first game before going 1-for-4 with two RBI in the nightcap. Klebart went 2-for-4 with a double in game two for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats remain in CACC play but return home on Saturday to square off against Dominican. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at Asbury Field.
