Cape Henlopen- 8-2 last year with losses to Sussex Tech and Sussex Central. They graduated 12 seniors and had 20 juniors listed on last years varsity roster. Performed very well at the JV and freshmen levels. The knock on them would be their non conference schedule which still looks fairly easy this season with games against lower cape may (won 53-0 last year), Indian River (W 43-7 LY) and Oakdale MD. Only have 9 games on the schedule (at this point). Good coaching keeps them in the mix.
Smyrna- 5-5 last year. Broke some long losing streaks last year and definitely a program headed in the right direction. They only graduated 9 seniors from last years team and obviously with Henderson back at QB they should be explosive on offense. Gave up 33 points per game last year so the defense needs to be much better. Non conference schedule features Delcastle, Appo, Sallies and Howard (W 27-0 LY).
CR- 2-8 last year with wins against Sussex Central and Polytech. Graduated 22 seniors but had 24 juniors on the roster last year. CR plays one of the toughest schedules every season. Besides the tough Henlopen North they will face Middletown, Salesianum, St. Georges and Glen Mills PA this season. Never a team that I would count out and maybe a new voice at the top will get this team back towards the top of the conference.
Dover- 3-7 last season with wins against Urbana MD, Smyrna and CR. Graduated 17 seniors and had 23 juniors on last seasons roster. The Senators always seem to have enough athletes to give opposing teams fits but consistency week to week is an issue. Last season they lost to Sussex Tech 35-28 beat Smyrna by 19 points but lost to Polytech 24-21. This year they will face Dunbar MD, Baltimore Poly , Lake Forest and Salesianum in non conference play. Always a wild card type of team.
Sussex Central- 5-5 last season. SC finished last season with 4 straight wins including a big win over Cape 35-21. The Knights will be looking to improve on back to back 5 win seasons and with a good number of returnees that's a real good possibility. The non conference schedule looks to be manageable with Laurel, Queen Annes County, Interboro and Indian River looming.
Sussex Tech- 9-1 last season which ended with a semi final loss to Middletown. Only other loss came to St. Mark's. We all know who Sussex Tech lost but they do return 20 juniors from last season and expectations are still very high for this team. Salesianum makes a return trip downstate on Nov 6th which is the game everyone will be looking forward too. Still the team to beat in Henlopen North.
Polytech- 4-6 last season with those wins coming against Delcastle (2-8), Seaford (1-9), Milford (1-9) and an upset of Dover. Polytech has an uphill battle in Henlopen North but this is a program that has absolutely improved over the last 5 years.
Predicted order of finish
1. Sussex Tech
2. Cape Henlopen
3. Sussex Central
4. CR
5. Smyrna
6. Dover
7. Polytech
