Interesting Quotes from Smyrna/Sals Coaches

Coach Judy and DiNardo have some interesting quotes in the State News Article...
http://delawarestatenews.net/sports/sallies-outlasts-smyrna-in-high-scoring-affair-76-56/

Coach Judy makes some interesting points. The injury to a Smyrna player that delayed the game at least 15 minutes in the 2nd half helped slow down the Smyrna offense as did the injury timeouts for cramping. Many of us old guys on the Big S side were thinking the same thing.

Judy's comments of his disappointment of his defense for letting "walk in" TD's at the end of the game is interesting. Those kids had to be exhausted but #28 was McLane like.

Classic comment that we all probably agree with "anytime you score 56 points you should win the game."

BDN "I have never been involved with anything like this in my life."

My head is still spinning.

It's probably just me but I'm tired of hearing about tempo and the spread . Injuries and time outs happen in all sports. It shouldn't effect you that much. Smyrna lost because they gave up 76 points. It seems to me that these basketball on grass teams don't emphasize defense. It's too prevalent in college. Surely a 76-56 game is exciting but I for one enjoy a good old defensive battle .

Fan I am with you on that... I hate the BOG.. much prefer old school smash mouth, but that just isnt the reality of what college football is looking for today.. I am also glad Sallies did what they did,,, but can other teams in the state? Hell I can barely watch NCAA or NFL for that matter anymore.. its a different game then what I fell in love with

I thought Coach Judy's comments were fine. He had just been through a war and I don't think he was consciously making excuses. He and BDN seem to have a good rapport,

I don't know what I hate more the spread offense or the crazy uptempo that has the officials having to make sure that they are in the correct positions before they allow the ball to be snapped.

Ravenrooster and I are on the same page on our offensive style preference. The Sals threw the ball around more than enough and their offense is clicking. (Hey, that is a meaningful comment. They just scored 76 points on a top 4 team.)

I'd be curious to know how long it would take for other schools around here to adopt the spread. Its run by just about every school in Texas it seems. Me, I'd like to see more schools run the option. Its big in the south and puts up big numbers. Its neat to watch also.

We did talk about the injury and cramps slowing down the tempo. It was also apparent the chain gang had some difficulty getting into position quickly enough.

Smyrna's offense is something to see and will pose problems for everyone they play. While it was apparent some of Sallies 2 way players were tired late in the game, it was also apparent a lot of Smyrna's lineman were feeling it as well.

Reeder played great on both sides of the ball the entire game, He even made big plays on special teams That kid is in shape man. I got tired watching him and insulting Chesdel for over 3 hours.

Ok I will give you that (yes if you give up 70 points you should lose). However when the Smyrna player got hurt the score was 42-49. No one expected Smyrna to stop Reeder completely however if you look at the film the play that the Smyrna kid got hurt on was against Reeder and create a turnover on downs. They did pretty well up to that point. I would have expected more from Sallies defense against Smyrna. When the Smyrna player went out the defense suffered he is a captain and a leader on the field. I have to say that after he left the boys were prettty much no longer focused and worried about him given that they allowed more points to be scored. I am impressed with how they played and if you look at the film the turnovers hurt them alot and could have made a different outcome. Like Coach Judy said prior to the game in one of his quotes only we can hurt ourselves and in this game had they played a stellar game and the Smyrna kid didn't get hurt there would be a different conversation going on now. So don't sleep on them they are a well coached, hungry team.

Ricci, I quote my old Sicilian grandfather " IF my Aunt had balls she would be my Uncle!" IF goes a long way, if Smyrna could tackle, if players don't get injured, if players don't turnover the ball , football is full of IF'S. That's part of the game. IMO

I agree, however the point I was making since the post was about Quotes from Smyrna/Sals coaches was that Smyrna was their own worst enemy in that game not so much Sals. And Judy who had stated that fact, specifically that they would need to play near perfect football to win and that in the 4th fourth quarter being down by 7 is not where anyone would have thought Smyrna would have been vs the Great Sals team! IJS.

IMO they didn't need to play perfect, they had all the skill needed to beat Sals , just needed to play defense! Judy needs to put some focus on tackling drills.

I think a lot of people thought Smyrna would do really well last Friday night and they did. Smyrna made mistakes but those mistakes happen when you play a quality football team. My point is: give credit to the team that won and don't make excuses for losing. Look ahead to this week because last week is over.

ricci...........IMO they are a very good team but they still haven't beaten anyone.

RR............why did you change your logo to UD?

My son goes to UD and I have season tix... the Smyrna thing was just messing around to rile em up..

You know after all this analyzing, Smyrna actually won the game. Friday never happened.

No one is making excuses for them (they beat themselves and are capable of playing much much better). Also, I am not taking anything from Sals, they are a top notch team but can be beaten as long as the opposing team plays near mistake free football. Really anyone who thought my comments we putting down Sals are crazy they are a great team and work very hard however I am really getting tired of the poor comments made about Smyrna. Those boys work as hard and even though they haven't played anyone by most of your standards the fact of the matter is that 2 years ago they were a 2-8 team (that had a difficult time winning a game) and went to 5-5 a year later and will do even better than last year's record this year. So give them some credit. As far as Smyrna is concerned the game they played Friday was a win for them. They were hanging with Sallies and came back from a deficit that I don't think many teams in this state would be able to come back from against such a great team. You can best be sure if they make it to the playoffs and play Sallies again you will see a team that has the kinks figured out so to speak.

Coach Judy had some great comments about the game in today's NJ. I love his attitude.

“I wouldn’t change it for anything,” Judy said. “I would have loved to have a different outcome, but sign us up. We want to play teams like this. We want to play them because they’re where we want to be. We’re not going to get there by playing teams that aren’t of that caliber.”

The knife cuts both ways s as I am sure the Sals coaches are happy with the win but also know they have some things to work on as well... I am sure they would not want to go into a rematch thinking they need Reeder to run for 400 and be plus 4 on the turn-over ratio...

Smyrna showed they can play with them no doubt... Sallies won no doubt but for anyone to say Smyna could not beat them is well silly... I am sure the Sals coaches know better than that...

Now there is one bugaboo with Smyrna's O in Delaware as it pertains to weather.. The cold, wind rain and snow of the North East is not conducive to that O at all... I will say this IF there is a rematch and if the weather is not mild and its real cold, or rainy , or windy ofr any of that then Smyrna would indeed have no chance...JMHO

Quote from the game:

"What is wrong with you guys? Play some defense." - Both coaches....

Smyrna has done wonders with that program. Honestly wouldn't want to play them in the playoffs and some one is going to have too.

That being said when you give up 70 points dont think you can use the "we were our own worst enemy" reasoning. I think there worst enemy would be Colby Reeder.
