Smyrna Sophmore Runningback Will Knight...

2,000 Rushing Yards + 33 TD's

300 Receiving Yards + 4 TD's

200 Passing Yards + 1 TD's

51 2 Point Conversions

25 Points a game average

And when his ALL-STATE QB went down against WP, he just took over the game and ran for almost 300 yards + 4 TD's against the best defense in the state...

Great Job to every player in the state... This was a great year of football...

Jeff, I like the pick for Offensive POY. In high school, I think you need to be a 2 way player to be POY. Didn't see enough of any one player but in the 2 Games I saw Knight he was pretty damn good.

Cant argue with those stats, and the scariest part about all that jeff, is the word sophomore. We get to watch him for two more years

@ SCash Smyrna does not play anyone on both sides of the ball so they don't deserve POY? It's Offense or Defense POY, not team member of the year or two way starter of the year.

Life, your post is confusing. Yes, if he doesn't play both sides of the ball in high school, to me he is not player of the year. He is offensive player of the year. The post was replying to Jeff's post about his player of the year, not the state awards.

What is confusing about that. If a player dominates the field no matter what side of the ball he plays he should be POY. NFL or Heisman or anything else is not determined by playing both sides of the ball. Its about who carried them team when they needed it most. Who's outstanding play shines the most. Your basically saying that the kid doesn't deserve it because he doesn't play defense, which is against his coach's philosophy. Watch any states with exceptional high school football and the kids play one position and master the skills at that position they need to succeed.

I like what the sports writers did here with their selections. Reeder could very well have won POY for offense or defense. Linemen of Year to me seems like the toughest vote. You throw Burton, Cathers, and even Dooley into the equation- who was more dominant? IMO Cathers was more dominant defensively, with Burton being a close 2nd followed by Dooley. Burton was obviously the bigger force offensively- extremely dangerous blocking and catching. Dooley had a heck of a year basically on 1 leg from what I hear.

OPOY probably came down to Knight and Henderson, along with some others (who knows).

Regardless our hats should be off to all the young men listed as well as the many kids not making the top 3 teams. It was a heck of a year for Delaware football. Now on to basketball and wrestling!

If All-State is strictly coaches voting either individually or via a conference rep I have to applaud their making Henderson 1st team all state QB. Maybe somebody can explain the process to me but my interpretation would be the non Henlopen guys fought for Henderson. The City guys - Ritter and DiNardo - both played against Smyrna ( as well as Dooley and Holmes.). Looks like these guys have integrity.

The Henlopen coaches not making Henderson 1st string all conference QB means that the majority of them are stunods.
