Florida Senate education panel approved a bill today that would give parents the opportunity to pick any school in the state for their child, whether for academic or athletic reasons.

The bill (and several other "school choice" proposals) worry some educators and coaches, who fear it will complicate school finances and school planning and lead to groups of talented athletes all enrolling at certain schools.

But during a brief meeting this afternoon at the Senate's education budget panel, the "choice in sports" bill (SB 684) was approved unanimously, with little discussion and no debate.

The bill aims to let parents enroll their child in any public school that has room, even if it is outside their attendance zone or outside their home county.

It also eases restrictions on student athletes, making it easier for them to join teams if they switch schools midyear or if they attend a charter or private school or if they are home schooled.

Lawmakers pushing the measure say it rightly gives parents more say in their children's educations and allows parents who cannot move more school options for their kids.F

This should be a fun one to watch.

more fun to watch as it pertains to state athletic association rules across the country,, If you really think about it... How can a school with a student enrolled in good academic standing tell a kid you are fine to participate in any after school activity other than sports? really you can't..After all sports is really just a volunteer after school activity.. well unless sports are a scholarship requirement which they are not in HS..

DIAA does provide a due process hearing for a student/athlete wishing to transfer and play sports without the the 1 year penalty.

I do understand that once the door was opened with school choice the "inducement" clause no longer applied just to the private schools. Plus many students have parents living apart in different districts. My sense is that DIAA will keep things as they are. Of course, if the legislature forces their hand then you could see some changes.

I follow the DIAA meeting minutes regularly and they decline more waivers then they approve..but I would suspect if one got a lawyer involved they would be forced to cave and approve a waiver..JMHO

I honestly don't know what the chances of it being approved are, this was just the first of three committees that the bill has to go through before it is released to the full senate. I can promise you this, no music teacher ever got fired because the number one trombone player in the state jumped ship. The dangers of this are obvious, there are lots of people with boat loads of cash that can get a kid to go to a school that they favor, especially in FLA. ESPN did a story a while back about gambling on pee wee football. I could just imagine what would go on at the HS level if this were to pass.
As you know it has long been my contention that no school is forced to be a member of an association, it is a choice. Much like I thought it was fine and proper for ECA/RLCA to go their own way, rather than having to force an association to change for the sake of one institution.
Did that lawsuit in Virginia ever get settled?

Should be interesting to watch.

It will be interesting if this opens the door for IMG to become a full FHSAA member and compete for FLA State Championships... Actually there really is no need for the FHSAA other than to run State Tournaments but that can easily be done by the State DOE ..The DOE would then also get all the money from said tournaments

Kind of let this thread slip off my radar. Thanks for the update on the VA lawsuit. IMG=OMG. Does IMG give scholarships? It looks like it costs 60 grand to go there. That is crazy. If your kid was good enough to get into IMG in the first place, he would be a star in most any FLA school. Those kids get full ride offers all the time. Worst case scenario, the kid could walk on almost anywhere in the country and you could afford it. Crazy
