I am getting married to a man from another country this summer, in June. Traditionally they have a ritual 3 days before the wedding. The men go on their version of a bachelor party and the woman spends time with the different women of their "house" and gets judged. Traditionally speaking they could say no to the wedding. In practical terms those rules don't really apply but it's still not fun to fail. Because of time and flights we are doing these things now instead of this summer.
I have met his mother a few times. Usually when you imagine a mother in law you imagine a warm, woman with god like cooking skills and is too caring for everyone. You know calls a little too often and things like that. That's what I imagine. But not my future mother in law. She is as cold as ice and she will give you backhanded compliments all the time. Like the first time I met them I tried making a traditional meal. She said: "Very nice, dear. But these things are best reserved for the experienced. I hear they have excellent burgers in the area". Or when she comments that her son has lost weight and that is supposedly my fault.
In a way I have completely given up on impressing her. Feels like no matter what I do I am doomed to fail. But I would like to try one last time. If that doesn't work maybe I should have a real talk to her, eye to eye?
