The young uns might be finding their groove but will they handle the "Spartan Slowdown" Friday night?

Sallies is a lot better than people think and has not lost a game they couldn't easily win this season. There biggest problem is the coach trying to please everyone. Subing up to 3 kids at a time with no consistent flow, destroying momentum, and recking confidence. Its almost like the boys and girls club league where everyone is guaranteed 2 quarters regardless of talent. They have a solid cast of young talent. A solid young point in Ali but the coach tries his best to keep that kempski kid in the game who's not a point. The big kid is the only consistent kid on the floor, it just looks like a mess. Also the coach refuses to go to zone when zone is needed. If u look at the body language of many of their kids u can see the frustration with this mass confusion they got going on. This is why many coaches only select 10-11 kids to suit up for varsity. At this point in the year that coach has to decide do u want to win by making strategic basketball decisions or lose trying to please everyone. One thing I know is certain, yanking multiple kids every 2-3 min is the worse bball strategy.

I dont think hes trying to please anyone! That seems to be his coaching style. It looks like he has no concept of what he is doing. Sals could have been very good, building on the players that contibuted last year with the help of the freshman. Sals barely beats marginal teams. Winning sates with great players doesnt make you a good coach. There is no evidance of offensive play sets. The big kid is just sent to the low post with hopes he can score. No help, no screens, no rolls, nothing. Its hard to watch. Very doubtful they will have a post season presence. Wonder what the composition of the team will look like next year? I agree they look like a middle school Boys and Girls club team with mandated playing time.

SMH. Calm down keyboard coaches. This man is coming off of back to back state championships and he is coaching basically a brand new team of very young players. They are growing and if they stay as presently constructed they will be very good. Right now he is simply searching for how he is going to get his points and ALL of the boys are getting a chance to prove that. Give them time........Sheesh

GREEN TEAM
Maybe he isn't Red Auerbach but the Slowskys won the State title last year starting 2 freshmen on a .500 team.
Based on their play thus far these guys are a .500 team and based on seeding may make it to the Bob.
Patience.
PS. I don't know much about basketball.
Respectfully,
Bummy
On leave starting 2/1

Hummm! The discusion is one of coaching style this year not states last year. My grandmother would throw pasta on the wall to see if it stuck. If it stuck it was done! Throwing in kids in or searching for points is not coaching. The student managers can do that. The question is? Where is the offense? What is the point of rotating 10 playes in the Q1. Why not consider changing defense? Season is well underway so this is no longer 'break in' peroid...
Its OK to question a program and its direction

Uncle Bumfuzzled/ dnell, I don't think people are being unfair, people are just wondering whether those 2 state titles are the result of Donte Divincenzo, Shane Clark and Brian Onell without coaching as much of a factor. In Delaware u can get away with winning with pure talent because other than the top 6 teams the competition is watered down. Futhermore, Donte was not a traditional Sallies basketball player, his level of talent was more of an anomaly. Sallies has never been known for its basketball success until Donte arrived on the scene. They have had opportunities under Gallagher and competed for State titles in 83, 91, and 93. But other than this Sallies has always been a football school and a very good one at that. Last year sallies struggled to a 10-10 finished with the graduation of experience talented seniors It just appeared at the end that Donte and Clark just took over and decided they were not going to end their career at Sallies on a bad note, coaching just same secondary to their success.

You guys are absolutely correct in that its ok to question his coaching its a free country all I'm saying is the team is young. The kids are good with a chance to be great. Haley represents a change at Sallies and I'm sure we can all agree on that. The point is give them time none of the kids have been consistent yet so I can understand him playing as many kids as he plays eventually with experience the children will decide who plays. As far as defense I LOVE thats he makes them play man to man and any Delaware coach who plays a lot of zone you are doing the children a major disservice when it comes to playing at the next level........

Dnell, totally agree with man to man and it helping kids on the next level, however there are times when strategically a zone or full court press is necessary to win. Example the St. E's game, most coaches in Delaware know Cropper can't shoot outside but is very aggressive. Sallies has size and length and can really extend a zone. U cover Money and lock Cropper in a 2-3 he fouls out quick. Once Cropper goes it's over for St. E's. So in this scenario a zone strategically beats your opponent. U use what u have too to win. That change to a zone strategically last year is what beat polytech for the title.

Based on a couple of these comments, I would then extrapolate that all of the great competition that the Slowskys beat last year in the tournament were poorly coached. After all, Poly, Mt Pleasant, Appo and St. George's had superior records during the regular season and the Slowskys started 2 freshmen on a .500 team. I think it was a consensus of this forum that Haley out coached a few people once the tournament began.

Look. I am fish out of water on this one. You guys know more about basketball.

Haley did a great job at the end but did any of these teams have Villanova bound player of the year. Best player in the state, a kid 5 notches above many of the best players last year. I cannot find any team on record in state history with a 500 record that ever won state.

Why is it that in Haley's case it was the players, but not so for Waterman? Correct me if I'm wrong, but Waterman two years ago had Mosley, Hughes, Ayala, Dixon, Walsh, etc., but Sallies won it all. Last year he had Ayala, Dixon, and Walsh, but Sallies won it all. I guess DiVincenzo and Clark just completely did it without coaching last year. Yes, the guy has had the last two POYS, but maybe he deserves some credit for helping them achieve that as well as winning BACK TO BACK titles (including the first in the history of the school). I played for Haley JV and when he assisted Gallagher on Varsity. I'm not claiming to be totally objective when it comes to the guy, but this stuff about not running sets or an offense is a load of bull____. I agree he's playing too many guys and that's got to get pared down, but you got a couple guys on here that aren't close to objective, which means they're probably parents.

Im a parent and I'm also a realist We dont have a lot of good coaches here in Delaware but Haley is in that league with Waterman. Its common sense that coaches coach but the players determine the game its the damned if you do damned if you dont business as a coach. Here are the facts we are watching a team thats dominated by freshmen......FRESHMEN and we are looking for a finished product right now. The man is learning his team as they grow so does he.
P.S. A few years back Red Lion had a monster squad that ran roughshod over everybody and guess what? They lost for the money......Coaching and talent go hand and hand

TruthhurtsSometime, I think u mean to say why is it in Haley's case its the coaching not players. Simple answer, what Stan is currently doing makes sense, what Haley is currently doing makes no sense. You forget the other category of people on this site, Coaches, and some of them like myself have past college coaching experience. I currently coach AAU but if Waterman showed up at the gym with a bad strategy I would let him know too, No one is immune from the Junkie, I have one objective and that's to raise the level of Delaware Basketball because that serves my agenda. No one is exempt from constructive criticism. I hear it all the time when I coach, I listen if its good otherwise I could care less what people have to say. All i'm saying to Haley who I believe is a good overall coach is when u bring weak stuff to the hole it gets rejected. The guy that I really have not got on this year is the Appo coach, his time is coming. Haley can coach i have to respect that, but the Appo coach is just terrible.

Why is it that a discussion/ thread develops that someone always spins the conversation against those asking questions or heaven forbid, criticizing? If your seeing offensive sets, screens, rolls, ect., and changes in defensive that others dont, please enlighten the crowd...

Hey guys quick question no disrespect just asking who do you (Junkie and Peach Basket) coach for or who have you coached for. See it makes it a lil easier to understand the criticism when you can put a face behind it.

Peach, he's been running post isolation stuff for years (used to be Texas and Illinois, now it's Texas and Hammer). But sometimes they're just running a Motion offense. Are they supposed to run a set every single trip for him to be a good coach? If they were doing that you'd be saying he gives the kids no freedom. Good luck dnell trying to get a face behind a name. My bet is these guys ain't coaches.

Gents, Still spinning? Never claimed to coach at any level, I probable would be terrible so I dont. Played after HS. I know what I see and I hear what people say. I guess someone handed you a whistle and that made you omniscient. We will just wait and see how things pan out for Sals when they actually play against some competition. We will see how simple post isolation and rudimentary motion offense will work. No zone D. My guess, if they continue on this path, no or limited post season play. We all agree they have enough pieces, so time will tell. That was the point! Please get the last word in.

Appo is a whole different level misdirection. Dont get bent out of shape if people 'talk' about fellow coach again...

I appreciate some of these insights....and admittedly don't have the Bball knowledge that you guys have. Is there any analogy to football? For example, did Smyrna, Penn, The Slowskys or Middletown start any 9th graders in FB? I really don't know. But if they did 60% of their top players wouldn't be 9th graders. That's my point.

Maybe the situation isn't analogous. ( I know that Troy Reeder and Darius Wade started in FB in 9th grade.)
What kind of success would Delpercio have if he started 8 freshman on offense?) Look I don't know BBall but the Slowskys are green. What would be a rational expectation for this group at this point in their development? The News Journal has them 10th. Based on the talent that they have and their current grade groupings, where should they actually be compared to like the other top programs?

Thanks for any thoughts on this.

The Sals will get better and better as the season progresses. Haley did a very good job the last two years and I believe this year's team will develop too. They may not be title material this year, but they will win their share and will be tough for at least the next few years.

Thanks, my friends. I will try get to some basketball games over the next couple weeks.
I appreciate the patience and the willingness to explain some of this stuff to me.

In the one game I saw it is apparent that the big guy #30 has it in him to be one of the best Slowsky basketball players of all time. I remember Mike Thomas starting as a freshman in 1970 and this young man projects to be bigger and stronger. Also, O'Neill didn't blossom until his 11th grade year. A friend told me that #30 projects to be one of the all time greats....exceeding the accomplishments of Mike Thomas and O'Neiil. If this current group of 9th and 10th graders stays on point that will bring home some trophies before they graduate.

I personally love a coach at high school level who contest to go man. That showing he knows if we can't man you can't play a zone. But putting on for the crowd or friends destroys a good division. But all teams has its ups and downs. All around good team tho!!

Man to man should be 80% to 90% of all defensive teachings. Defensive shell drills and good transitional D is a must teach. I don't invest a lot of time on zone other than falling back into it after a press, inbounds plays or for poor shooting teams, foul trouble protection or to take advantage of having a lot of long lanky players. In games I use whatever strategy it takes to defeat my opponent and will at times change multiple defenses in a game. Nothing is ever set in stone.. Delaware does not have many teams with solid front lines or size Sallies is an exception. So if I am playing them, I'm pressing on d and pulling the big man away from the rim on O since they will only play man. U take away his effectiveness if he has to run from the three point line to get a rebound presenting a better match up for me. I will just run him around on the parameter and tire him out making him less effective on O. Why let him sit in a zone under the rim blocking shots and pulling down easy rebounds so he can kill me on the other end. On the other hand if I had this type of team with his size and talent along with Brown u have to exploit such an advantage in Delaware. I can press and put pressure on the ball knowing I have a shot blocker then recover back to a zone. I can extend my zone to pressure shooters but I'm not going to give teams the chance to compete on the boards. I will man u only if your shooters are getting and making to many open looks, u have other bigs that match up or offensive players are slipping my zone getting rebounds , I am down and have to step it up or you down by 30. Other than this I save the energy for the pounding I'm going to deliver u on the other end with my inside out or screen role game.
