On the 2019 schedule I see Sallies are playing their home games at different fields (A.I., Brandywine, Caravel), St. E's is playing all their home games at Caravel, but Howard is still playing their home games at Baynard Stadium.
Anyone know why this is?

Howard is probably still looking for an alternate site, so that's why it hasn't been changed yet, but it will be. Either they'll be on the road for every game, which would suck, or someone else'll step up and offer them a place to play.

All 3 should be road warriors next season. Then in 2020, all 3 teams should play all of their games at home. What a way to break in the new stadium. Agree to split the proceeds of ticket sales and concession sales 50/50 both years.

Just curious, why would Salesianum agree to split anything?? They are the ones who are posting up the millions to rebuild...

I am not refering to ST. E, Howard, and Salesianum spliting anything with each other (unless they play each other then it doesn't mater) just with opponents in 2019 and 2020. That is unless they don't have the same opponent scheduled for 2020.

As I live over in the Canby Park area, I can tell you that St. E probably won't be playing at the artist formerly known as Baynard much longer. Canby Park's old swimming pool has been demolished, so it's likely St. E WILL turn that land into a sports complex, including a football stadium.

Howard has played at Baynard a long time....I expect them to play at Abbesinio for as long as they want. If Stubbs wasn't in the way, Howard may be able to fit a stadium on Kirkwood Park. Maybe they will play at Canby....my sense is that they will stay at Baynard/Abbesinio.

The state senator for Howard's district (a Wildcat alum) had a public town hall meeting about a possible stadium, but the community wasn't very receptive to it.

Howard will play at Abessinio Stadium as long it wants. Howard is one of the Salesianum partners. I know St. E's wants a stadium in Canby Park, but that project has a LONG way to go. Remember, the public-private partnership for Baynard is ALL Salesianum money. The City is putting a little money into Canby, but the investment is at Eden Park.

Now, that is a very comprehensive article by Larry Nagengast. Remember when the News Journal used to do that. I believe Rep. Dorsey is a St. E's grad. It is good that she is repping her folks.

I like the Pres. of St. E's comments about raising money. He has to rattle the tin cup whereas the Big S brought some big $$ to the table.

A quick update for anyone who may not be following along (because spring sports has been SUPER competitive) - Howard and NCCVTSD proposed putting a stadium at Kirkwood Park, but a group (mostly of dissidents and not current East Side residents) raised such a stink, city council could only pass a vote on a practice field. I have heard that the stadium proposal may come around again in the fall meetings.

As it stands, Howard's entire 2019 home schedule will be at Caravel.

A facility in the footprint of Kirkwood Park is interesting. Even though it is located on the Brandywine on a one way street there could be a nice North and West traffic flow to 295/95 on 14th St at Gander Hill. Traffic could also flow down Church Street going South. Also, the facility is a adjacent to what becomes NE Blvd/Gov. Printz. Fascinating.

Where would people park for the Kirkwood Park facility?

The current Baynard has traffic issue but it is close to 95. A lot of people going to Baynard just park in the Salesianum lot or on the street because parking at Baynard is very confined.

When does the demolition of Baynard begin?

That, Bummy, is the 64,000 dollar question. Parking is a nightmare if you're going to a Howard basketball game, I don't know what they'd do for football because you can't make residents move their cars.

And I'd also like to know when the work on the AB begins.

first state grid posted this awhile back

This is from the Dec 17 NCC VoTech Board of Ed Agenda

b. RFQ 1902 – Architect for Howard Athletic Fields
c. RFQ 1903 – Construction Manager for Howard Athletic Fields

Scope of Services
Kirkwood Park is currently owned by the City of Wilmington; however, the District is working with the City to redesign Kirkwood Park for expanded use of Howard High School and modification to the existing park areas for use of the general public. The new facilities would include a practice field, main game field with viewing areas, relocated playground, relocated pavilion structure, reconstructed restroom building, relocated basketball courts and new playground facilities. Additionally, the existing Clifford Brown Statue Plaza and Formal Garden Structure may be removed/relocated/reimagined in some form or combination to best suit the school and community needs.

I thought the article said Howard was putting in a 70 yard turf practice field. Are you thinking yet another full size turf field for Howard? Vo-Techs must have big bucks

Honestly, as a Howard alum, I feel like a stadium is due. Dan Ritter's built that program to being one of the top programs in D2 and that has to be maintained and improved upon. Kids that would play at Howard probably see the practice field and knowing that they won't get the prime spot at Baynard/The AB most weeks.

Agreed that Howard should have facilities right next to their property. Playing at Baynard has worked for them as it is like 12 blocks from the school. Playing at the AB wouldn't exactly be a step back for the program. Gotta love Ritter. He never looked for greener pastures.

Gonna be honest Ches, I thought once JD Maull left St. Georges, he was OUT, but he's been true to Howard since he got the job. Wish there were a way to honor him, but he probably wouldn't hear of it right now.
