Scores 02/16/17

Woodbridge up 29-21 at the half.

The Corbin brothers are clearly the best 2 players on the floor tonight from what I have seen so far & the younger Corbin only played the last 20 secs of the 2nd qtr after picking up his second foul in the first. Cornell Corbin doing it all for Woodbridge.

Glasgow's Earl has struggled so far...he looks real quick but Woodbridge has been meeting him at the basket denying him the finish.

Glasgow turning it on up 45-42 after 3. Earl got it going a little playing tough D leading to a couple layups BUT the big kid #15 is what kept them in striking distance.

Woodbridge up 56-54 1:58 left after quick 5 pts from C. Corbin.

Big time steal by C. Corbin, passes ahead to H. Corbin for go-ahead bucket 58-56 Woodbridge w/ 18.2 left. All this after Earl hit 2 free throws to tie it.

Woodbridge wins 60-56.

Cornell Corbin head & shoulders above everyone on the floor on both ends. It looked like Glasgow was gonna tie it he came out of nowhere w/ game-saving block. He is a First Team All-State caliber player but probably won't get the votes because voters don't see him as much.

At halftime I heard a media guy say that he came to see him tonight because the rule is that you are supposed to have seen the kid play to vote for him & that he would now have him on his ballot. But my thing is how many voters actually take the time to see ALL of the kids? What if this kid would have had an off night tonight then do you not vote for him because the one time you saw him he had a bad game?

Fair question. I think it's harder nowadays for media to see everybody because you've got a lot of outlets that have maybe one full time sports person and a bunch of part-timers/freelancers. Add to the fact there are more high schools now than back in the day when it was only about 25-30 and probably 10-15 had all-state caliber players.

That block was the play of the game. But, I have to tell you, with all due respect, as a non-biased fan with no ties to either one of those team, I didn't leave that game thinking anyone on that floor was head & shoulders above anyone. I left thinking, if those teams played 10 times, they would probably split 5-5.

I am always non-biased as well but the truth is that some kids often get more hype than deserved while others who don't get seen as much don't the recognition. If those teams played 10 times then I wouldn't argue that it could go 5-5 or 6-4...but you are telling me after watching that game that Cornell Corbin was not clearly the best player on the floor? I would think he had to have a game-high in points, rebounds (Glasgow's #15 was on the boards as well) & blocks (he's 6'2 @ the most & played big while Woodbrideg's tallest guy was out hurt tonight on the bench in a cast). And down the stretch he had the game-winning steal, assist & block at the other end all w/ under a minute left. Name one other player in that game that played anywhere near as good tonight or better. I'm not saying he is a 1st Team All-Stater but that performance tonight was that good. I would have him on my 2nd Team All-State.

Also, I like Earl & he seems like a true point guard looking to set up teammates & not too much of a scorer. His on-ball defense was impressive. He had trouble finishing in traffic early cuz of his size & he didn't make a jump shot all night but he held his team together giving them a shot to win.

Agreed. I believe there were like 34 high schools my senior year & 24 made the tournament...smh.

I graduated high school when Wilmington High was still around, there was no St. G/Appo/St. Thomas More/etc., so I can relate. Times have really and truly changed.

St. Mark's led Delcastle 22-3 at the half, ended up winning 46-28. Spartans are gonna be a tough out as always.

Hodgson beat Concord 57-45. Two tough games (@ Penn Saturday and Sanford on Tuesday) will tell just how good this team is.

Tatnall and Friends both win, giving them 11 on the season (Friends has one more game against St. Andrew's) - which one will be on the outside looking in?

Last, but maybe not least, Sussex Academy saved their best for last, winning their first varsity game in their season finale, 48-41 over Aquinas.

I don't know the points but Friends played a pretty good schedule- I can't imagine they aren't in.

Thanks for the assessment. Sounds like you making a great point with facts.

Corbin is clearly overlooked because he doesn't get the exposure that NCC players get. Seen him twice now and impressed both times. In addition with loss of point guard he was handling the ball a lot more often to compensate. He also had 5-7 rebounds I'd say.
