Smyrna @ Middletown tonight

Alright all you DEPREPS guys that are at Middletown what you got? A little undisciplined by both teams so far but I think they're pretty well matched. The fumble and short field for Smyrna changed the first half for sure, 1 qtr to go.

30-27 Smyrna

Smyrna goes for 2 every time. They have no kicker or he isn't that good. But when you have Knight that can take one step and cross the goal line, why not.....right?

sounds like a great scrim game.. ECA never kicked either lol,, hey if you can convert 50% its the same a kicking xpts .. where not having a kicking game hurts most is not being able to kick FG's on long downs inside the 20.. and field position on kick-offs

If I remember correctly I don't think Smyrna kicked much last year.. certainly didn't punt much if at all

Yeah not having a kicker basically was the difference of ECA being 9-3 and not 11-1/12-0 in 2014. Bad Kickoffs, no field goals, and bad 2-point play calling (pass plays ofcourse)

Only played 3 quarters. Looked like starters played all 3. Smyrna suffered two injuries that could effect them later on. Not sure who the names are but 38(LB) who suffered a knee injury late 1st, early 2nd, and a line man who suffered a head injury according to one of the coaches in the box.

Middletown RB Whitehead seemed to have leg cramps a lot. For the most part, yes all starters. I can't say who has an advantage, except maybe the kicking game, Middletown has that advantage lol but they seemed very equally matched. A lot of deek and dunking: with the very few big plays by both. Should be interesting if these two meet in the playoffs.

One take away I took, Smyrnas offense doesn't like noise, when the home crowd started getting loud, it affected them a bit too

38 is Elijah Hutchinson their best defensive player IMO

I couldn't agree more, hope those two get better or both injuries end up nothing serious.

Concerning RRs statement, I've never seen Smyrna play with in the last couple of years so if that is true, it would be a tough break losing him, once the game started he seemed like the best player on defense. But once again, here's to hoping all injuries were nothing serious

I also would like to get someone's take other than mine, because it can be bias at times, but some ones take on Middletown soph QB Fry? Did he impress? Is he/could he be someone to worry about it?

At Smyrna?
yes he was QB coach then OC at Red Lion when Eric Day left..When Day came back to ECA Marks left and Judy when hired made Marks the OC.(who is a math teacher at Smyrna) That is is why Smyrna runs what they run the Red Lion/ECA offense

Smyrna's offense depends a lot on lining up then making audible calls from the side line.. In HS you dont have the helmet earphones so yes noise can cause problems in communication

The cowbells are definitely an advantage for MT vs a team like Smyrna.. Running no huddle the QB has to be able to bark out protections, plays and audibles.. Artificial noise makers are illegal in college and NFL stadiums.. Shouldn't be allowed in HS either its pretty unsportsmanlike in my opinion.. Whats to stop some fan from blowing an air horn every time the opposing QB is trying to call plays or audible?.. its nonsense

Told y'all. Middletown is king in the south.

Frye is a deal that is real. Really real.

Penalties were annoying. Both teams couldn't stop taking cheap shots.

Smyrnas offensive line was not good. Leaks everywhere. If I were them I'd send that center up to ECAravel with the rest of those boys. I ain't seen a beating like that since someone stuck a banana in my pants and turned a monkey loose.

I won't disrespect Middletown because they are a decent team. But anyone who knows Smyrna football knows that they didn't show their hand. A little sandbagging and experimental stuff. If they really wanted to win, they would have wildcat'd them all night. Defense had starters chilling on sideline, coaches called Lets see how this play work-plays instead of going for it plays. The MT QB is good and they are definitely a playoff team. But they came to play a playoff game and Smyrna came to play a scrimmage. That was the bottom line. Marks had nothing to prove by taking the wrapper off all of the toys. The line play on both sides of the ball needs work but the skill players were not fully activated. But hey, if you want to do everything but douse the coach with Gatorade after "winning" a three quarter scrimmage...more power to you.

I would agree with you on some of that. Smyrna would have had some success lining up big on big and pounding it. But they didn't partly because that's not their style unless their QB gets hurt and both teams were still playing hard and the Town came out on top.

Now I'm not sure what you saw this evening but the Smyrna side of the stands was not reflective of "just a scrimmage" as you have eluded to. MT also had some starters that were not playing and certainly ran a restricted play set. Soph QB played pretty good and the LBS and secondary tackle pretty well. They're pretty well matched and would put both teams above the "decent" level.

And believe me. I ain't disrespecting Smyrna. Just making some observations. If Middletown doesn't win it all I hope Smyrna does. Anything other than a prissy, cheating, recruiting private school winning.

Let me add something to that...."that has beaten Middletown five times in a row".

Someone smart once told me- "The past is the past and sallies doesn't have any 20 year olds this year."

I'll holla at you Oct 7. And you best holla back. Youngin'

Observations
-Smyrna fans get props-they damn near filled the stands! On the other side I must say Cavs fans disappointed.
-MT QB (? xfer) is very good /very strong arm and will create problems
-Yellow was the color of choice last night and it was not poor officiating.....both teams played very undisciplined
-Line play on both teams needs work
-They played 4 qtrs not 3 but never changed the clock. The clocked stopped at halftime.
-it was almost all starters for both teams.
-Neither team will play that tough of a game all season long.
-The Town certainly acted as if they had just won the title.
-The Sals will not beat the Cavs this year Dove!
-Smyrna still the better all around team, they have more weapons.
-Cavaliers stadium was the place to be last night-it was the most intense and only scrimmage I have ever been to where the starters played the entire game. (with very few exceptions)
-MT needs either a new grill or new cook.....fire and smoke everywhere LOL

......overall take is both teams played very hard and Smyrna was not letting MT push them around. When MT started with the cheap stuff, the Eagles came right back at em'. Bottom line-these 2 teams will both be there come late Nov/Dec and its more than reasonable to say they will see each other again. But whoever plays Smyrna will have to keep score with them just like last year and I do not see it. The Eagles are gonna hang no less than 30 on everyone this year. Look for a repeat!

And the history books will continue to show Middletown got spanked 5 times in a row by the prissy Catholic school boys. BOY

Whoa whoa whoa. You gotta calm down there Chuck. I didn't say anything about Catholic. The religious aspect doesn't bother me, just the cheating/recruiting aspect. But like I said. The past is the past. Don't hang onto it. Let it go.

Cheating and recruiting? That's hilarious and I'm a St Marks grad. Sallies is a great school and attracts most of the best players from Cym . No need to recruit . I would send my boy there in a heartbeat .

I consider the ability of a private school to recruit, when in regular competition against public schools where such a thing is illegal, as tantamount to cheating and creates an unfair advantage.

I've always been on the opposite side this argument for years, when it came to Sallies. St. Marks, and Caravel.

However I do have to concur, that they don't need to recruit, with the tradition and winning that these schools have constantly been apart of, that alone should attract some great athletes. Academics too are top notch, I personally haven't experienced it but a lot of friends have graduated and did really well in college. (Maybe st. Marks should start recruiting if their enrollment keeps declining)

I respect Salesianum. They have beaten Middletown since the Cavs beat them twice in 2012. The game at MDT in 2014 the Cavs fumbled away. I believe that the Cavs outplayed the Slowskys in the playoff game last year. I believe that Datillo scored on the last play but that the officiating crew just missed the call.

Once again, let me emphasize my respect for Salesianum. I do often times approach things humorously. This year the Slowskys will be in an ill humor. There is strong probability that they won't make the tournament this year. The last time that happened was 2008.

This group might not be a .500 team. They do have the toughest schedule in the state.
Judge will come to Baynard next week 2-0. CR has revamped their offense and that Wagonhoffer kid is the real deal. Then on to Smyrna for a spanking. Look, Concord owes them; Penn owes them; Middletown owes them big time. Caravel hosts them and should win this. (Remember, the Bucs beat the State champion Slowskys in 2009 at Baynard.)

Dover is a 50 mile bus ride.
Sussex Tech is always talented.
The Slowskys might be so beat up by their last game St. Marks might beat them. Sparty beat them in 2014 at Baynard.

From this vantage point I think the Sals go like 3-7, 2-8.

It's going to be a long year for the clones.

As much as I would love to agree with you Bummy, imsaw the game footage from last years playoff game, Cathers stopped Datillo just behind the goal line. A side note, Datillo reinjured the leg he injured against Penn week 2 earlier in the game, so would he have gotten in if he was healthy? Idk, no one knows. Coulda woulda shoulda I guess right? They were pretty evenly matched last year, and Colby was just the difference maker.

Yeah the slow sky's have won 5 straight against the Cavs, but I don't think the Sals can say they beat Middletown 63-0 in one season? Either way, both stats, 5 years straight, and 63-0 is something to take pride in for both teams, where as I think this rivalry if it hasn't already is going to surpass the sals/stm rivlary one day.

As far as this season, Sals will make the playoffs, bonus points will help them tremendously. Judge is a tough call, but CR is gaining ground I guess(?) but Sals still win that game, Smyrna should be a loss, concord could go 50/50, it all really depends on what Concord team shows up, they have always had the talent just can't put it together, Penn is tough, but I can see Sals winning that. So they are already at 4-1 at best, I don't see them beating Middletown this year, 4-2. Caravel still is out for debate, yeah they have transfers but Sals have the numbers. I think they can squeak this one out too, but I wouldn't be surprised if they lost it. So 5-2 dover would be a win, 6-2, Sussex tech- see my explanation for concord, 7-2, st. Marks just doesn't have it any more, so 9-2. That's a playoff team for sure, even if you throw a father judge loss in there 7-3, with all the bonus points they will get, they could be a 3-6 seed. And then become dangerous in the playoffs because dinardo is just a scary coach to coach against come playoffs

Are you joking about the CR QB? Although I'm sure he's a nice kid and good athlete, I saw him play last year and he looked like an athlete/fullback playing QB because he was their best option there. I didn't really get the impression that he could fling the ball all around the field

hs, nice piece of analysis. It makes me feel good that somebody read my post.
The 2012 Cavs team was one of the greatest FB teams in DE history. That Slowsky team was
10-0 outside the 2 beats owns by Middletown.

I am intrigued by the Dover. Maybe their New coach..a Jersey Boy Paisan is the next Lombardi...

Not joking but maybe exaggerating a bit. If CR changes their offense to like a Gus Malzahn kind of thing. Who knows? They usually have some athletes. Henlopen North has some talent. They have stepped up their scheduling. ( the Cape and Sussex Central could boost their schedule...) I think the HN could win a few more D1 FB titles in the next 5 years.

50mi bus ride...hahahahaha. Try a GA, FL, SC or TN bus trip, survive four players to a room, play a very good team with local refs.

50mi bus trip...you kill me.
