I've been intrigued by the way Smyrna has stormed on the scene. They beat the Pride of Lower Delaware badly (Tech didn't have Griffin but I don't think it would have mattered much). I'm wondering whether their success is due to the quality of the players on the team or the offense they run. The Smyrna offense is a gimmick to all the local teams who have never seen it (although you can see it every Friday night on ESPN when a Texas school is featured). I think you actually have to play against them to learn how to defend it. If Smyrna gets to the Tourney ( a foregone conclusion), I think you will see opposing teams bring 5 or 6 defensive backs to better defend the Spread. Does Smyrna have good people running it? Yes, I have commented on the effectiveness of the Henderson kid in the past. He is a junior as well along with others, and Smyrna looks good on paper for next year as well. Beyond that, who knows.

You have to be able to disguise your coverage's on on D and confuse the QB into making bad reads and mistakes..hence making them play behind the sticks 3rd and longs and 3 and outs.

Easier said then done though. You have to be able to coach up your players to show one coverage and play a different one without screwing up themselves,, not easy

The thing that has impressed me the most about Smyrna that hasn't been mentioned is Will Knight. That kid is awesome and he is just a sophomore. Plus their defense has improved since that Sallies disaster. Sussex Tech was very unimpressive and even with Griffin they would have still got smacked.

Coach Judy is doing a great job teaching the spread correctly. Lots of coaches in DE try and sprinkle in parts of the spread into their offense not really knowing what they are doing. Considering 80 percent of colleges are running the spread it's also preparing his kids to play at the next level.

Lol wait til they play William Penn . I hope they see them in the playoffs .
Careful what you wish for.....not saying they will beat WP but any team who can score that damn fast is dangerous. And WP (as RR mentioned) isn't all that.....I think Sals put an end to their lil streak and poss. repeat.

...1 thing that always concerns me as the calendar turns to November and temps drop....is Smyrna ready for a cold/windy type game where airing it out might not be an option??

Smyrna has a really good run game as well. Will Knight is the real deal.

Not sure they would beat Penn but that would be a great match up. The Penn defense is one of the few defenses that has the ability to slow down that Smyrna O.

Good point Jawn... That Offense is definitely a fair weather O.. Great in FLA and Tex.. we will have to see how it does in November up north. They do have a pretty good running game though..

There has been OOS match-ups that show this.. Those southern teams struggle when they come up north to play when its cold.. case in point when top ranked St Thomas Aquinas and all their D1 athletes from FLA came up and played Don Bosco last year at West Point.. It was cold , windy and rainy and Bosco took them down pretty easily. Bosco wasn't all the great last year either..

Jawnsky what are you Ravens Lil Minion lol agree what everything he says. I cant wait for next week to prove you both wrong if you honestly watch all these teams and not.be biased you would see Penn is the stronger , faster , dominate team. As far as the weather is concerned as it gets colder and more windy that just plays into Penn's favor as we all know or should know Penn's field the wind just swirls and howls there so just saying. Sorry Sals wont win that game next week.

My early prediction would be William Penn over Sallies in a very close game. A game that could go either way though. Penn might have more speed but not sure about stronger and dominant.

DRest...lmao on the Minion...good stuff!
to be clear- I mentioned that it will be interesting to see IF Smyrna struggles on a poor weather day and he agreed with me. And next week only proves NEXT WEEK. I have already seen the teams in question , some several times.....that's why I had Sals #1 in the preseason. And while WP has handled their business this year, they have only played 2 decent squads.

STG-who they should beat by 14-20...they did, but I think WP jumped on them in first half and then 2nd was even up.

Cavs- they barely won and very easily could have lost. So exactly how tough are they? Answer is we do not really know yet. Can they beat Sals-sure they can. Beating them twice in one season...maybe...No doubt WP has the most balanced team in the state this year, but that does not make them unbeatable. Unless of course WP gets a few more transfers-always possible :)

Why does everybody bring up the transfers Penn gets and not all the other schools.I know the reason it just gets old.Lets just watch good high school football.
