Tough Stretch

Something I just noticed for this upcoming season, I don't think I've seen a tougher first 5 games to start the season than what Sallies has to deal with.

Opening with Father Judge at home, throw in a game with CR at home, followed by a 3 game road stretch with Smyrna, Caravel, and at Middletown. Followed by a home game against Concord.

Personally other than the decline of CR, I don't think any of those 6 are easy wins.

Has anyone seen a tougher slate than that in their years of following high school football in Delaware?

Its the same schedule they had last year only they swapped Cardinal O'Hara with Caravel

CA had a brutal schedule to start 2013/2014

HVT- away W 14-7
Episcopal Academy- away L 15-34
Archbishop Curley- away L 35-49
Northern Valley Regional- home W 13-12
Archmere- home W 20-19

easily could have been a 0-5 start. The Episcopal game was a killer. It's the game Savage broke his leg, my Son tore two ligaments in his thumb and had to play the rest of the season with a hand cast and Shriner tore his ankle up and took 6 weeks to fully recover

I realized it's the same schedule but personally I think caravel is a bit more formidable than Cardinal o hara.

What makes this go around even tougher is now you have a Smyrna team who is all in on who they are and what they could be, and all three of those 4 in state games are on the road in what I could consider three of the toughest places to play.

Caravel always has a strong showing, the Smyrna community will be in full force this season to see how they answer a championship year and Middletowns fans are probably the most hated in the state, yeah it's the same schedule but being on the road for all three, opening up with the one team that beat you last season, besides the loss In The title game...it's not an easy feat.

I remember that year for caravel, if I remember correctly, that was supposed to be the year they won it all. Or at least the favorites to do so anyway, but injuries plagued them.

I think Smyrna has issues on the line and definitely on defense. If Judy doesn't change his stance on two way players they could have a tough year..I don't expect them to repeat.. I also don't think Sallies is a top 4 team.. Right now my odds on favorite is probably Middletown but I also think Appo may turn some corners this year

I would normally be happy to hear someone say the Town is the favorite but coming from you it feels tainted.

I'm also curious as to where you get all your info from. Smyrna has issues on the line? Is that just based off your ability to look at a program from last year and see a couple seniors leaving? If so then bravo. Your analysis is top notch.

And "definitely on defense"? I recall someone more knowledgable to their situation saying they barely graduated anyone on defense. I know you can reach waaaaay up there from years of practice but just because you can doesn't mean you should pull things from your ass

Of course you factor in who they lost from last year, Yeah they return a bunch from D last year but also a Defense that really wasn't that good.. There is not allot you can take from 7v7 but their D has been a mess this summer.. They return the Hutchinson twins who are good. What you can take from 7v7 is if the kids seemed focused, coach-able and hungry for the upcoming season.. Like last year in 7v7 Smyrna had that "thing".. That focus and went undefeated.. This year they seem more interested in talking trash and blowing assignments probably why they are 3-4

I mentioned Appo because they do have a good amount of athletes and they seemed different than years past.. Although not as focused as Smyrna last year they aren't the rag tag undisciplined Appo I am used to seeing.. They had focus and seemed to take to the coaching.. To me thats a good sign for them this year

None the less Middleton is a solid program and is my favorite this year

No worries mate this time last year I said Smyrna was a contender and was scoffed at then also

What's your take on concord? It was this time last year they were "a year away". The Roberts brothers aren't a pair to reckon with.il Here it is a year away and they are one team that isn't even being mentioned

They would have been a player last year with good line play.. Same story this year.. Coaching is suspect there..Not necessarily talking about the head coach but the staff.. With the size they seem to have every year there is no way they should not be able to run teams over.. with them it comes down to the lines.. or if they could get any resemblance of a passing game that could help off set that as teams wouldn't be able to stack the box

To answer your question,, Two players can't win a D1 ship.. They are definitely a playoff team maybe even a semi finalist but they will get out-coached at that point JMHO It's just way to easy to game plan for them

I think I agree. I've always thought they had the size. And the athletes, just disapppointed in the QB play. Last year, I saw them play twice, one game they fumbled the ball away so much you'd think they'd have KY on their hands. And the other game I believe they threw 3-4 picks. And you can't win a game with that many mistakes

I'm with you guys Concord is predictable. Many Coaches will agree. At one game I overheard a conversations between BDN and Coach Simpson and they both agreed, but stated that they are predictable, but for some strange reason are still hard to stop. I believe that they will still go pretty far this year on their level of returning talent. The Roberts brothers are who they are, and they didn't lose much around them. I'm going to have to disagree with RR (which I rarely do) but I'm going to say 2 or even 1 can take you to the promise land. We saw Godwin and Wade, Carroll and Burton. Sallies has depended for the last 4 years Solely on the last name Reeder. When their was no Reeder in the game, there was no game. All these great players needed around them were other decent role players and their teams did fine.

I saw Concord at the AI 7 on 7 too. Their skills players look and move really good. Although, to this day, besides just to practice as a team, I have no idea why they participate when they throw the ball in their offense maybe 15% of the time. In the regular season, Concord relies heavily on their run game, AS THEY SHOULD, because it works for them. Hopefully, they use some of what they did, because they did do it well and they looked good doing it. We'll see. By the way, AI looked good against them too.

Looking at their regular season schedules I do predict a 9-0 Middletown vs. 9-0 Concord in Week 10. Both will be in the playoffs, but I wouldn't be able to pick any team to win it all till I get around weeks 5 or 6.

A.i. - thanks for your two cents. Always valued. But just so in clear, is that you predicting a sallies and Penn loss to Middletown? I mean I have to be the biggest and loudest Mtown fan that isn't named cowpie and I wouldn't even go that far to say those games are in the bag.

I agree with RR, sallies is not what they used to be and what many think they are. Granted, because of the talent pool and the coaches, they can win a ship with role players. Idk, maybe I'm just kind of surprised every one talking highly on them this year. I'm used to us being hated. Lol

Ive been wanting too myself, or at least a preseason ranking but still believe it's too early for that. As Soneone said, August 15th can't get here soon enough

I seriously wanted to start a thread for preseason predictions this morning, but I got busy and forgot. Are we posting predictions in this thread or starting another one?

I am predicting both Middletown and Concord to beat both Salesianum and Penn. Penn is in the same boat with Salesianum. They will have numbers, but lost too much in comparison with these two teams to survive a game. I believe that Middletown has lost some key players too, but I still believe they will be competitive. I think MTs line and qb are still questionable though. QB looks good in 7 on 7, but that's without pressure of an Avery Roberts type guy with pads on coming in for a blitz. There's not many players in Delaware comparable to Avery Roberts, so I think by week 10, he can build some confidence. I'm certain all of Concords skill players are all back, not exactly sure what they have back on the line though. I'm told they have some transfers in from Glen Mills on the line. I believe one of the two if not both may meet again after week 10, possibly in the D1 finals.

I am interested in knowing and seeing what Smyrna has done with losing some lineman and all receivers. I'm told 7 on 7 looks good, but most players catch a ball when they know they won't get hit.

:I'm told they have some transfers in from Glen Mills on the line."

Curious; how do you get transfers from a reform school?

That's my poor use of words. My understanding is that they have some kids who must have played at Glen Mills and have now come back to their home school. Also all kids at Glen Mills are not incarcerated. They also have kids who have no where else to go.

My prediction

1st- Town
Last- Caravel

Wild card- Sallies. If they can find some more 20 year olds to play, they could be a force. If not, they'll suck

and Smyrna is getting transfers from Glen Mills? Da fug is that? That's like sallies getting 20 year olds to carry their teams

@jawnsk
will cowpie get their own porta-potty?
this could be a first in the First State...
he/she could stand or sit, depending on he/she mood!

LMFAO!
All stadiums will now be required to accommodate people who are a lil' confused bout gender. However, they will be charged double since they are technically 2. Special seating avail. as well!

Meant to add that all game programs must read as follows:
Player Name
Grade
Age
Hieght/Weight
Position (on the field)
Sexual orientation
