Fri, September 01, 2017
Newark, Del. (Aug. 31, 2017) --- Delaware State held First State rival Delaware to its lowest scoring total in the eight-year history of the series, but it was not enough to prevent a 22-3 loss to the Hens in the season opener for both teams at Tubby Raymond Field this evening. The Hornets remain winless in the series, which began with in 2007. Delaware’s previous low against the Hornets was 27 points in 2009 & 2014. The Hens were playing their first game under new head coach Danny Rocco.

Delaware’s defense held DSU to 59 yards rushing and 224 total yards, in addition to forcing three Hornet turnovers.

The Hens held a nearly 2-to-1 advantage in time of possession, holding the ball for 39:50 compared to 20:10 for the Hornets.

Delaware was also aided by two second half Delaware State turnovers that put an end to promising drives.

The Hornet defense kept Delaware out of the endzone for more than 42 minutes before surrendering third and fourth quarter touchdowns to put the game out of reach.

Delaware took advantage of a perfectly placed punt by Nick Pritchard to score the first points of the game late in the opening quarter.

On DSU’s first play from scrimmage after Pritchard’s punt was downed at the Hornet two yard line, Mike Waters was tackled on a rush attempt in the endzone for a safety to give the Hens a 2-0 lead with 2:07 to go in the first quarter.

After Frank Raggo kicked his second of two second quarter field goals, the Hens were ahead 8-0 with 2:22 left before halftime.

After being held to just 12 total yards on its first four possessions, Delaware State began to show some life on offense late in the second quarter to get on the board.

The Hornets picked up their initial first down of the game when true freshman quarterback Jack McDaniels completed a 24-yard pass to Fatu Sua-Godinet with 1:50 left in the second quarter.

Later in the drive, McDaniels and Sua-Godinet connected on a 42-yard pass to the Delaware nine. On the next play, Brycen Alleyne rushed for eight yards to the Blue Hen 1. The Hornets were stuffed on the next two plays and had to settle for a 24-yard Wisdom Nzidee field goal to cut the UD lead to 8-3 with 21 seconds left before intermission.

Delaware had a chance to extend its lead at the half, but Jake Roth missed a 49-yard field goal attempt as the second quarter clock expired.

The Hens took advantage of DSU’s first turnover of the game to put the Hornets further behind.

Five plays after Alleyne lost a fumble at the Delaware 48 in the third quarter, UD quarterback Joe Walker scrambled away from pressure and found Diante Cherry in the endzone for a 31-yard touchdown pass. The extra point kick by Frank Raggo gave the Hens a 15-3 lead with 2:48 left in the third quarter.

Delaware State’s chance to cut into the deficit later in the third quarter also ended in a turnover. Aided by a 15-yard fourth down run by Devin Adams out of punt formation, the Hornets moved the ball to the Delaware 43-yard line.

On the next play, Alleyne rushed to the UD 20, but lost the ball on the tackle. The ball was recovered by the Hens, ending the Hornets’ seven-play, 59 yard drive on the last play of the third quarter.

Delaware scored its final touchdown on a 19-yard end around run by Cherry with 6:22 left in the fourth quarter.

McDaniels, the first true freshman quarter back to start a season opener in recent memory for the Hornets, completed 12-of-28 passes for 165 yards. He threw an interception in the fourth quarter when the game was out of reach.

Sua-Godinet had four catches for a career and game-high 93 yards.

Alleyne was DSU’s leading rusher with 47 yards on nine carries.

Delaware’s Thomas Jefferson rushed for 102 yards on 19 carries, while Kareem Williams added 67 yards on 14 attempts.

Walker connected on 13-of-26 passes for a career-best 192 yards and a touchdown for the Hens. He was intercepted once, by Hornet cornerback Keyjuan Selby with 1:52 left in the first quarter. It was the first pick of Selby’s career.

“Our effort was superb on both sides of the ball, but it wasn’t enough against a good team like Delaware, ” said Hornet head coach Kenny Carter. “Our defense kept Delaware out of the endzone for a good while to keep us in the game. Our offense showed some good signs, but we must do a better job finishing plays and drives. This game is behind us now. We have plenty to build on, but much to do before playing our conference opener next week. ”

The DSU coach was also impressed with the play of his first-year signal-caller.

“Jack showed a great deal of poise for a freshman quarterback in his first game, especially given the pressure he was under at times in the game.” Carter said. “He made some nice throws and showed why we are so high on him.”

The Hornets return to action on Fri., Sep. 8 in their MEAC opener against Hampton. Game time is 7 p.m. in Hampton, Va.

Fri, September 08, 2017
Hampton, Va. (Sep. 8, 2017) --- Hampton struck for two big-play touchdowns in the second quarter and put up a solid defensive effort in the final 30 minutes to highlight a 28-15 win over Delaware State in the MEAC opener for both teams at Armstrong Stadium Friday evening.

The Hornets fell to the Pirates for the fifth straight year and seventh time in eight games to fall to 0-2 this season. The Pirates evened their record to 1-1.

Delaware State led 5-0 and 12-7 before being outscored 21-3 the rest of the way.

The Hornets opened the scoring with a safety when a punt snap by the Pirates skidded out of the endzone with 9:31 left in the first quarter.

Delaware State drove to the Hampton nine yard line later in the quarter, but had to settle for a 26-yard field goal by Wisdom Nzidee to open up a 5-0 lead.

Hampton capped off a nine-play, 77-yard drive with a four yard touchdown pass from Delmon Williams to Ronald Bell for its first score. The extra point kick by Adam Brown gave the Pirates a 7-5 lead with three seconds left in the opening quarter.

The Hornets answered on their next possession when freshman quarterback Jack McDaniels scored on a one-yard run on fourth and goal to cap a nine-play, 60-yard drive. The touchdown was DSU’s first of the season. Nzidee’s extra point put the Hornets back on top 12-7 at the 10:19 mark of the second quarter.

It took Hampton just two plays to strike back. Williams connected with Aulden Knight on a 48-yard scoring pass. After the extra point, the Pirates held a 14-12 lead with 9:42 to go before halftime.

Delaware State took advantage of a special teams play to regain the lead. Following a punt block by Caleb Hebron and return by Devin Adams, the Hornets started a possession at the Hampton 14. DSU moved the ball to the Pirate one, but again settled for a field goal by Nzidee (19 yards) to pull back ahead 15-14 with 3:59 left in the second quarter.

On the next play from scrimmage, Williams and Aulden hooked up again for the Pirates, this time on a 78-yard catch and run to the endzone to put the Pirates back on top. DSU trailed 21-15 after the extra point by Brown with 3:39 remaining in the half.

Hampton added an insurance touchdown on a 15 yard run by Yahkee Johnson with 12:13 left to play.

The Hornets had 11 first downs and 218 total yards in the first half, but managed just one first down and 49 yards in the final 30 minutes.

Morgantown, W.V. (Sep. 16, 2017) --- Delaware State scored a touchdown on its third play from scrimmage and forced three first half turnovers, but it wasn't nearly enough in a 59-16 loss to FBS West Virginia before 51,482 fans at Milan Puskar Stadium today.

The Hornets only trailed 17-10 after a field goal by Wisdom Nzidee in the first quarter, but were outscored 42-6 the rest of the way to fall to 0-3 this season. The Mountaineers won their second straight game to improve to 2-1.

West Virginia started the game with a bang. Four plays after Marcus Simms returned the opening kickoff 80 yards to the DSU 13, Justin Crawford scored the game's first touchdown on two-yard run. The extra point kick gave the Mountaineers a 7-0 lead just 53 seconds into the contest.

The Hornets answered West Virginia's opening salvo with a touchdown of their own to stun the home crowd.

Delaware State faced a third-and-four on its first possession when freshman quarterback Jack McDaniels found running back Nyfease West wide open near the DSU sideline. West sprinted the final 73 yards to complete the 81-yard touchdown pass to get the Hornets on the board and tie the game at the 12:20 mark of the opening quarter. It was McDaniels' first career touchdown pass and first career TD catch for West.

The touchdown pass was the longest by the Hornets since Nick Elko hit Travis Tarpley for an 83-yard score against Hampton on Nov. 10, 2012.

On the ensuing West Virginia possession, the Mountaineers drove to the DSU four, but had to settle for a 20-yard field goal by Mike Molina to regain the lead 10-7 with 9:42 to go in the opening quarter.

West Virginia took advantage of a Delaware State turnover to open up a double-digit lead.

Five plays after Brycen Alleyne coughed up the ball following the Mountaineers' kickoff, Crawford scored his second touchdown of the game on a three-yard run at 8:41 of the first quarter. The Hornets trailed 17-7 after the WVU extra point.

After a 57-yard punt by DSU's Fidel Romo-Martinez pinned West Virginia inside its 10-yard line, the Hornets forced a turnover, providing a chance to pull closer. Ulises De Los Santos recovered a fumble by WVU quarterback Will Grier at the Mountaineer six yard line.

The Hornets advanced to the two yard line, but couldn't get into the end zone. Nzidee nailed a 24-yard field goal to cut West Virginia's lead to 17-10 with 4:35 left in the first quarter. The DSU kicker is 4-for-4 on field goal attempts this season.

Delaware State forced two more first half turnovers, but failed to convert them into points.

Grier connected with Simms for a 62-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter to give the Mountaineers a 24-10 lead.

The Hornets were outscored 21-0 in the second quarter to trail 45-10 at the half.

West Virginia led 59-10 when Delaware State scored the final touchdown of the game on an eight-yard pass from Keenan Black to freshman wide receiver Kwannah Kollie with 5:51 left to play.

The scoring pass was the first of Black's career and Kollie's first TD catch. The score capped off an eight-play, 82-yard drive that consumed six-minutes-18-seconds.

West had two carries for 31 yards and a 19-yard reception, while Black completed 3-of-4 passes for 26 yards and rushed for 17 more during the drive.

“I'm so proud of how our guys fought today,” said Delaware State head coach Kenny Carter. “We certainly wanted to win the game, and if not, keep the score closer, but we had a lot of positives today. We were able to move the ball, had some big plays, forced turnovers and played aggressively on defense against a high-powered FBS team. This game is behind us now. Hopefully, we can build on this performance and continue to get better for the remainder of our MEAC schedule. ”

The Hornets had a season-high 301 total yards, highlighted by a season-best 161 rushing in the game.

West, a redshirt freshman, had a career day, catching three passes for 108 yards and rushing for 53 on 10 carries. His 161 yards from scrimmage also marks a DSU high this season.

Alleyne had a team-best 65 yards rushing, highlighted by a 47-yard run. Black had 48 yards rushing on seven carries in relief of McDaniels.

Making his third collegiate start, McDaniels completed 7-of-12 passes for 114 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

Hornet defensive back Nigel Bynum had his first career interception, while Brian Cavicante, Keyjuan Selby and Jahad Niebauer led DSU with six tackles each.

Romo-Martinez averaged 48.0 yards on seven punts in the game. He was tops in the MEAC and No. 8 among all FCS punters with a 47.1 yard average entering the weekend.

Delaware State returns to Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play next Saturday (Sep. 23), taking on Norfolk State in the Hornets' 2017 home opener. The Hall of Fame Day contest is set for 2 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.

Dover, Del. (Sep. 23, 2017) --- Delaware State’s bid for a long-awaited victory was foiled by series of penalties and turnovers, resulting in a frustrating 17-7 MEAC loss to Norfolk State in the Hornets’ 2017 home opener at Alumni Stadium today.

Norfolk State quarterback Juwan Carter completed 28-of-46 passes for 292 yards and two touchdowns, while the Spartan defense allowed just 226 yards and forced three turnovers.

The Hornets were also plagued by 12 penalties for 101 yards in the contest, each a season high.

Delaware State’s first possession set the tone for the game. The Hornets drove 39 yards to the Norfolk State 26, but Spartan defender Nigel Chavis intercepted a pass by Jack McDaniels to thwart the DSU drive.

Norfolk State drove to the DSU 17 on its first possession, but the Spartans failed to notch the first score of the game when Josh Nardone missed a 34-yard field goal attempt.

The contest remained scoreless until the final play of the first half when Nardone capped off a 17-play, 78-yard drive with a 19-yard field goal to give the Spartans a 3-0 lead at the break.

Norfolk State opened up a double-digit lead with a touchdown on the opening possession of the second half. Carter connected with wide receiver Chuma Awanna on an eight-yard scoring pass to highlight the nine-play, 57-yard drive.

DSU's Brycen Alleyne returned the ensuing kickoff all the way back for an apparent touchdown, but the play was called back due to a penalty.

Delaware State’s special teams put the Hornets in great position to get back into the game. Caleb Hebron blocked his second punt of the season to give DSU the ball at the Norfolk State 18 yard line. The Hornets faced a fourth-and-goal at the Norfolk State two when redshirt freshman running back Nyfease West plunged into the endzone for the touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter. The extra-point kick by Wisdom Nzidee cut Norfolk State’s lead to 10-7 with 14:54 left to play.

The Spartans answered with a touchdown on the ensuing possession to regain their 10-point lead.

Carter and Awanna again connected for the score, this time on a 16-yard pass to cap the six-play, 70-yard drive. Norfolk State led 17-7 after the extra point by Nardone with 11:25 remaining in the game.

Delaware State drove 73 yards to the Spartan seven on its next possession, but a pass by McDaniels was intercepted in the endzone by Norfolk State’s Bobby Price with 4:48 left in the fourth quarter to dash the Hornets’ comeback hopes.

West was Delaware State’s leading rusher with 47 yards on nine attempts. His fourth quarter touchdown was his team-leading second of the season.

McDaniels, making his fourth collegiate start, completed 16-of-30 passes for 156 yards.

Safety Jahad Niebauer led Delaware State with a career-high 11 tackles, including six solo stops. Freshman linebacker Devin Adams was second on the Hornets with eight tackles, while Keyjuan Selby had seven tackles (six unassisted) and two pass break-ups.

Norfolk State’s Chris Lee had six tackles, including two sacks and a forced fumble.

The Hornets fell to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in the MEAC, while Norfolk State won for the first time this season (1-3; 1-0 MEAC).

STINGERS The Hornets played without running back Mike Waters and safety Brock Nichols due to injuries … linebacker Malik Harris and center Cade Pedro left the game and did not return after being injured … the Hornets are idle next week and will return to action on Oct. 7 at North Carolina A&T (1 p.m.) … the next home game is Oct. 14 against Howard in the annual homecoming contest (2 p.m.).

THE GAME Delaware State takes on long-time rival Howard in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference contest on homecoming Saturday at Alumni Stadium . The Hornets are coming off a 44-3 road loss to MEAC co-leader North Carolina A&T last week. DSU freshman quarterback Jack McDaniels completed 11 of his 15 pass attempts (73.3%) for 83 yards in the contest. Keenan Black (so.) also appeared at quarterback for the Hornets, connecting on 7-of-17 passes for 83 yards, while wide receiver Taronn Selby (jr.) had career-highs of seven catches for 84 yards in the game. NCA&T led 16-0 when Wisdom Nzidee (sr.) nailed a career-best 47-yard field goal early in the second quarter to get the Hornets on the board. Nzidee is perfect on five field goal attempts this season to lead all FCS kickers (1.000 pct). For the season, McDaniels has completed 61-of-115 passes (53.0%) for 674 yards and one touchdown. He ranks ninth in the MEAC in passing average (134.8 ypg) and pass efficiency (96.4 rating). Brycen Alleyne (jr.) is Delaware State’s leading rusher with 150 yards on 39 attempts (3.8 ypc). He’s also fourth in the MEAC in kickoff returns with a 22.3 yard average, highlighted by a long of 56 yards at North Carolina A&T last week. Defensively, cornerback Keyjuan Selby (jr.) is the team leader with 29 total tackles, including 20 solo stops. Selby also has an interception and team-high five pass break-ups. Inside linebacker Brian Cavicante (so.) is second on the Hornets with 28 tackles, including a team-high 3.5 backfield stops. DSU’s Fidel Romo-Martinez (so.) is tops in the MEAC and third among all FCS players with a 46.0 yard punting average. The Hornets have been crippled by injuries this season. Among the long-term injured are RB Mike Waters, LB Malik Harris and OL Cade Pedro, each a preseason All-MEAC Second Team selection.

HOWARD
The Bison have dropped three of four games since opening the season with a stunning 43-40 upset of major college UNLV. Howard is trying to bounce back from a 13-7 loss to MEAC co-leader and defending league champ North Carolina Central last week. The Bison outgained NCCU 400-336 in total yards, but were held to just 72 yards rushing, well below their 243 yard average entering the contest. Howard senior running back Anthony Philyaw, the 2017 MEAC Preseason Offensive Player-of-the-Year, is second in the league in rushing at 81.8 yards per game (409 total) entering this week. Caylin Newton (fr.), brother of Carolina Panthers star Cam Newton, has started each game at quarterback for the Bison this season. Newton, third in the MEAC in passing at 206.6 yards per game, has completed 60 of 120 throws (50.0%) for 1033 yards with five touchdowns and seven interceptions. He’s also third in the league in rushing right behind teammate Philyaw at 79.6 yards per game (398 total). Newton’s 286.2 yards in total offense per game rank second among all MEAC players and he’s tied for the conference lead with seven rushing touchdowns this season. Howard is last in the MEAC in total defense (461.0 ypg) and 10th in rushing defense (271.0 ypg), although the numbers are misleading due to games against two FBS opponents (UNLV, Kent State) and FCS nationally-ranked Richmond.

THE HEAD COACHES
Delaware State
|Kenny Carter (The Citadel, 90) is in his third season as head coach of the Hornets. This is his first head coaching job. Before signing on at Delaware State, Carter was an assistant coach at Youngstown State University during the 2014 season. From 2010 to 2014, he was an assistant coach under Charlie Strong at the University of Louisville, helping lead the Cardinals to two Big East championships and four bowl appearances. During the 2008 and ’09 seasons, Carter was running backs coach under Urban Meyer at the University of Florida. He helped guide the Gators to the 2009 BCS National Championship. Florida also competed in the 2010 Allstate Sugar Bowl and captured the 2008 Southeast Conference championship during his time on the coaching staff. Carter has also served as an assistant coach at Vanderbilt, Penn State, Pittsburgh and LSU. Carter is 1-1 vs. Howard.

Howard |Mike London (Richmond, ‘83) is in his first season as head coach of the Bison. He brought impressive credentials to the position. Prior to accepting the Howard job, London served as an assistant coach at the University of Maryland during the 2016 season. The previous six years, he was head coach at the University of Virginia. In 2011, he led the Cavaliers to an 8-5 overall record, a share of second place in the Atlantic Coast Conference Coastal Division and an appearance in the post-season Chik-fil-A Bowl. London was head coach at the University of Richmond in 2008 and 2009. In 2008, he led the Spiders to the first FCS National Championship in school history. The following season, Richmond posted an 11-2 overall record and reached the FCS Playoff quarterfinals. This is his first game against Delaware State.

THE SERIES The Hornets and Bison are meeting for the 60th consecutive year and 74th time overall, making it Delaware State's oldest rivalry. DSU holds a 39-33-1 lead in the all-time series. Howard won last year’s meeting 26-21 in Washington, D.C. Howard’s Anthony Philyaw rushed for 281 yards and two touchdowns to overshadow the performance of Delaware running back Mike Waters, who ran for a DSU freshman record 220 yards and two scores in the contest. The last time the teams met at Delaware State, the Hornets scored the last 13 points to win 32-31 in 2015.

HORNETS CELEBRATE VICTORY OVER BULLDOGS
Courtesy DSU Athletic Media Relations
Sat, October 21, 2017
Dover, Del. (Oct. 21, 2017) – Wisdom Nzidee kicked the go-ahead field goal with 10 minutes left and the defense highlighted a solid effort with two fourth quarter interceptions to lead Delaware State to a 17-14 victory over South Carolina State in a MEAC contest at Alumni Stadium today.

The victory snapped a 17-game skid for the Hornets (1-6; 1-4 MEAC), who won for the first time since defeating Howard 32-31 in the 2015 season finale. DSU also ended a 12-game slide in MEAC contests.

The Hornets used two first quarter touchdowns to open up a 14-0 lead. South Carolina State scored a second quarter touchdown and another early in the fourth quarter to tie the game.

After the Bulldogs tied the score, DSU’s Jordan Hannah returned the kickoff to the SC State 40 yard line. The Hornets benefitted from a South Carolina State personal foul on a third down sack to keep the drive alive. Quarterback Keenan Black took advantage of the break by completing an 18-yard pass to Nyfease West and a 17-yarder to Jordan Hannah to move the ball to the Bulldog 10.

The Hornets could not advance any further and had to settle for a 29-yard field goal by Nzidee to open up a 17-14 lead with 10:11 left to play. Nzidee is 7-for-7 on field goal attempts this season to lead all FCS kickers with a 1.000 conversion percentage.

South Carolina State had three possessions after DSU regained the lead. The first ended when Hornet defensive back Devin Smith intercepted a pass from SC State quarterback Dewann Ford at the DSU 47.

Delaware State’s defense forced a three-and-out on the next Bulldog possession.

SC State started its last drive on its 20-yard line with 3:03 left to play. After a sack by Hornet linebacker Brian Cavicante and a four-yard loss on a pass play, DSU’s Devin Adams ended the Bulldogs’ hopes with an interception and return to the SC State 19 with a minute to go.

“This was a total team win,” said Delaware State head coach Kenny Carter. “The offense got us off to a great start with the two early touchdowns and the defense played out its mind for much of the game. The players and staff have been working so hard all season. It’s great to have that effort rewarded with a victory. We will savor this win, but it’s important that we get back to work to try and build on what we achieved today.”

Delaware State started quickly, scoring a touchdown on its opening possession for the second time this season. One play after completing a 29-yard pass to Trey Gross on third-and-22, Black connected with Taronn Selby for a 36-yard touchdown to get the Hornets on the board.

The touchdown was the first of Selby’s career.

The pair connected on a 35-yard pass to the SC State 9 earlier in the drive. Nzidee’s extra point kick gave the Hornets a 14-0 lead with 55 seconds left in the first quarter. “We have a really great group of receivers,” said Black, who completed 14-of-27 passes for a career-high 218 yards and two touchdowns in his first start. “Our passing game has improved so much this season. The offensive line gave me time to throw and the receivers made some big time plays.”

Gross had four catches for 66 yards, giving him nine receptions for 220 yards in the last two games.

Sua-Godinet hauled in four passes for 65 yards. He has a touchdown catch in each of the last two games and four for his career.

Sat, November 04, 2017
Savannah, Ga. (Nov. 4, 2017) --- Savannah State quarterback D’Vonn Gibbons rushed for 126 yards and two touchdowns and passed for another, while the Tigers’ defense recorded eight sacks and their special teams contributed two scores in a 35-21 victory over Delaware State in a MEAC contest at Ted Wright Stadium today.

Savannah State won for the second straight week to improve to 2-7 overall and 2-4 in the MEAC. The Hornets dropped their second in a row to fall to 1-8 and 1-6.

Freshman wide receiver Trey Gross had three receptions for 48 yards, including touchdown catches of 5 and 25 yards for Delaware State. It’s his second two-touchdown game this season. Gross has caught 21 passes for 339 yards and five touchdowns in the last four games. He leads the Hornets in touchdown receptions and total TDs this season.

Delaware State threw for 237 yards in the contest, raising its total to 1,315 passing yards in the last five games (263.0 avg.). The Hornets averaged 154.3 yards passing in their first four outings (617 total).

DSU netted just 17 yards rushing, including 58 yards lost on the eight Savannah State sacks. Three of the Hornets’ opening day offensive line starters- Cade Pedro (so.), Kaiden Crawford (r-fr.) and Kaydence Jackson (fr.)- are out for the season due to injuries.

Gibbons rushed for a 9-yard touchdown and threw a 39-yard scoring pass to Cameron White to give the Tigers a 14-0 first quarter lead.

Delaware State got on the board late in the second quarter. Two plays after Savannah State lost the ball on downs at its 6-yard line following a botched play out of punt formation, Keenan Black connected with Gross on a 5-yard touchdown pass. The extra point kick by Wisdom Nzidee cut Savannah State’s lead to 14-7 with 3:20 to go before halftime.

Following the touchdown, the Hornet defense forced the Tigers to go three-and-out, but DSU failed to move the ball on its next possession and was forced to punt from its endzone after losing 16 yards on a third down sack.

Punting from the endzone, the kick by Delaware State’s Fidel Romo-Martinez hit the back of a Hornet blocker and recovered by Savannah State’s Elijah Shah for a touchdown to give the Tigers a 21-7 lead with 1:15 remaining in the second quarter.

Delaware State started strong in the second half. Jordan Hannah returned the second half kickoff 50 yards to midfield. After a 21-yard pass to Kwannah Kollie moved the ball to the SSU 25, Black and Gross hooked up for their second touchdown of the game to pull the Hornets to within 21-14 at the 13:44 mark of the second quarter.

The ensuing Delaware State kickoff was returned by Savannah State’s JaMichael Baldwin to the Hornet 24-yard line. Four plays later, Gibbons rushed for his second touchdown of the game on an 8-yard run to give the Tigers a 28-14 lead with 11:38 left in the third quarter.

The Hornets still trailed by 14 and was forced to punt with less than five minutes remaining in the game. The return was fumbled by the Tigers and recovered by DSU at the Savannah State 40.

On the first play after the turnover, Black hit Taronn Selby for a 40-yard touchdown pass to keep the Hornets’ hopes alive. After the extra point by Nzidee, Delaware State trailed 28-21 with 4:19 left to play. The touchdown grab was the second of the season for Selby, who led DSU with four catches and 63 receiving yards in the game.

DSU’s hopes were quickly dashed when the ensuing kickoff was returned by SSU’s Baldwin 70 yards for a touchdown to put the Hornets again in a two-touchdown hole with 4:04 remaining in the game.

Black completed 12-of-27 passes for 216 yards and a career-high three touchdowns, however, he threw four interceptions and was sacked six times.

Nyfease West led the Hornets with a career-high 72 yards rushing on 14 carries to climb to the team with 251 yards this season.

Defensively, DSU freshman linebacker Devin Adams had a game-and-career-high 14 tackles (10 solo), including 3.5 behind the line-of-scrimmage and two forced fumbles.

Freshman defensive back Devin Smith had 11 tackles, seven unassisted, for the Hornets.

Delaware State returns to action next Saturday (Nov. 11) for their 2017 home finale against Morgan State. The Military Appreciation Day contest is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.

Sat, November 11, 2017
Dover, Del. (Nov. 11, 2017) --- Delaware State overcame a 21-point second quarter deficit to defeat Morgan State 33-30 in a thrilling home finale for the Hornets at Alumni Stadium this afternoon.

DSU pulled ahead 31-30 on a three-yard pass from Keenan Black to wide receiver Trey Gross with 8.9 seconds left in the game. Black completed a two-point pass to tight end Isaiah Williams following the touchdown to give the Hornets a three-point lead.

Morgan State attempted a pass to the endzone from 48 yards on the game’s final play, but the ball was knocked away, setting off a celebration by the Hornets, who won for the second time in the last four games to improve to 2-8 overall and close out their MEAC schedule with a 2-6 record. Morgan State fell to 1-9 and 1-6 in the MEAC.

Black completed 16-of-26 passes for 234 yards and four touchdowns, each a career-high. He has thrown seven touchdowns in the last two games to raise his season total to 13.

Gross had two touchdown catches for the second straight game, and the third time this season. In the five games since joining the regular wide receiver rotation, he has 24 receptions for 394 yards and a team-high seven touchdowns.

Fatu Sua-Godinet and Kwannah Kollie also had touchdown catches for the Hornets in the contest.

The Hornets also had a 100-yard runner for the first time this season. Redshirt freshman Nyfease West rushed for a game-high 110 yards on 19 carries, including several key short yardage runs to extend drives.

Black rushed for 45 yards, mostly on scrambles to avoid the Morgan State rush. He also hit key passes while on the run to keep possessions alive for the Hornets.

Morgan State started the game with a bang, scoring a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage on a 70-yard pass from DeAndre Harris to Manassah Bailey just 18 seconds into the contest.

The Bears opened up a 14-0 lead after a one-yard scoring by Herb Walker in the first quarter and pulled ahead by three touchdowns on the second Harris to Bailey touchdown pass, from seven yards, early in the second quarter.

Delaware State began its comeback on the ensuing possession when Black capped off a five-play, 65-yard drive with a 29-yard touchdown pass to Gross to cut the Bears’ lead to 21-6. The extra point kick by Wisdom Nzidee was blocked. Morgan State’s Rico Kennedy scooped up the ball and returned it the other way for two points to give his team a 23-6 lead with 11:05 remaining in the second quarter.

The Hornets executed one of their best drives of the season to cut further into the deficit. The 11-play, 75-yard drive consumed 5-minutes-18 seconds and ended with a 13-yard touchdown strike from Black to Fatu Sua-Godinet. After Nzidee’s successful extra point kick, DSU pulled to within 23-13 with 4:05 left before halftime. The touchdown catch was Sua-Godinet’s third this season and fifth of his career.

Delaware State drove 85 yards on 11 plays to start the second half, but had to settle for a 25-yard field goal by Nzidee to cut Morgan State’s lead to 23-16.

The Hornets took advantage of a Morgan State turnover to tie the game late in the third quarter.

Seven plays after DSU linebacker Garfield Heslop recovered a fumble caused by a Xavier Wilcher sack, Black connected with Kwannah Kollie for a 23-yard touchdown. The extra-point kick tied the score at 23 with 45 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

After Delaware State forced Morgan to punt on the ensuing possession, the Hornets were on the verge of taking their first lead of the game. DSU drove 58 yards on five plays to the Morgan 18, but a pass by Black to Kollie was intercepted by MSU’s Corvon’Tra Revell to end the threat.

Starting from its five yard line, Morgan State drove 95 yards on 13 plays to the endzone to regain the lead. The touchdown, on a 13-yard pass from Harris to Bailey, was the third of the game for the pair and gave the Bears a 30-23 lead with 4:30 left to play.

Delaware State answered by driving deep into Morgan State territory in just three plays, but turned the ball over on a fumble by Kollie at the MSU two yard line with 1:57 left in the game.

On second down from the two-yard line, Morgan quarterback Harris fumbled the shotgun snap before being tackled in the endzone by Hornet lineman Jacob Jones for a safety to pull DSU to within 30-25.

After the free kick by Morgan State and 57-yard return by DSU’s Taronn Selby, the Hornets had the ball at the MSU 23 with 54 seconds on the clock.

Delaware State faced a fourth-and-10 at the 23, when Black hit Selby for 15 yards in the MSU eight with 28 seconds left.

A defensive holding call on the Bears moved the ball to the three. On the first play after the penalty, Black found Gross in the near left corner of the endzone for the winning touchdown.

The Hornets totaled 413 yards in the game, passing for 234 yards and collecting a season-high 179 on the ground.

“There were so many turning points in the game, but the key was staying focused and still fighting after falling behind early in the game,” said Delaware State head coach Kenny Carter.

“We faced a lot of adversity in the game, even after working so hard to come back. But every unit made plays that turned the game around.”

The Hornets will close out the 2017 season at FBS Florida State next Saturday. Game time is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Doak Walker Stadium in Tallahassee, Fla.
