Dover, Del. (Sep. 1, 2017) --- Lafayette scored three goals in the first 10 minutes and never looked back in a 3-1 victory over Delaware State in a women’s soccer contest at Alumni Stadium Friday evening.

The Leopards struck first just six minutes into the contest (6:06) when Gabrielle Lassinger fired a shot past DSU goal keeper Leslie Fazio off feeds from Gabrielle Martone and Sophie Saldivar.

Less than two minutes later (7:47) later, Lafayette’s Katie Brannigan scored from close range off an assist from Martone to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.

The Leopards (2-1) completed their scoring when Rebekka Arnthorsdottir booted a shot from 20 yards away into the net to put the Hornets down 3-0 just under 10 minutes into the match (9:57).

Delaware State got onto the board in the second period when Kayleigh Leschinski scored on a penalty kick in the 66th minute (65:41). The goal was the third in her career and first this season.

The Hornets appeared to cut further into the deficit but a shot by Katrina Silva was turned away on a leaping save by Lafayette goal keeper Kelly O’Brien, who deflected the ball off the cross bar and back into play.

DSU (0-6) is back in action on Sunday at Hartford. The match begins at 2 p.m. in West Hartford, Conn.

Princess Anne, Md. (Sep. 15, 2017) --- The Delaware State volleyball team was one set away from its first victory of the season, but couldn’t hold on in a 3-2 loss to North Carolina-Ashville at the 2017 Henson’s Hawk Invitational at Maryland-Eastern Shore today.

The Hornets also dropped a tournament contest to host MDES 3-1 later in the day.

In the UNC-Ashville match, Delaware State took the opening set 25-17 for its first set win of the season. The Hornets opened up a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five contest with a 25-21 victory in the second set.

Ashville stayed alive in the match with a 25-17 win in the third set and evened the contest with a 25-14 victory in set four.

The Bulldogs won the deciding fifth set 15-8 to win the match.

Sabina Szmajduch led the Hornets with a season-high 19 kills, while DSU’s Gabriella Enriquez led all players with 34 assists, her best this season.

Three Hornets reached double-figures in digs, led by Alliyah McBean’s season-high 18, also tops among all players. McBean has 10-or-more digs in eight of the Hornets’ 12 contests this season and stands at 947 in her career.

Taula Leimaluhia recorded 12 digs and Szmajduch 10 to post her second “double-double” of the season in the contest.

In the MDES match, the Hornets dropped the opening set but evened the contest with a 25-22 victory in the second set. The Hawks won 25-12 and 25-11 in sets three and four to claim the match.

Enriquez again led all players with 28 assists, while Szmajduch was tops on the Hornets with 13 kills to give her 32 for the day.
