UVU wrestling to host annual Intrasquad Dual on Thursday
10/30/2018 | Wrestling
OREM, Utah - The Utah Valley University wrestling team will debut its 2018-19 roster for the first time on Thursday with the annual Green & Black Intrasquad Dual. The exhibition contest, which will feature free admission, will begin at 7 p.m. at UVU's Lockhart Arena.

This year's Intrasquad Dual will be competed on two mats and each mat will be streamed live on GoUVU.com/watch.

The Wolverines will enter the season off of a successful 2017-18 campaign in which they posted an 8-6 overall record and tied for fifth in the Big 12 Conference standings with a 4-4 league dual clip. UVU also earned its first USA Today/NWCA Top 25 Coaches Poll ranking a season ago, as it debuted in the poll at No. 25 after knocking off Big 12 power Oklahoma at home in early February. Utah Valley then capped its season by sending a program-high five grapplers to the 2018 NCAA Championships.

UVU will welcome back four of the five 2018 national qualifiers this season in sophomore 133-pounder Taylor LaMont, junior 165-pounder Demetrius Romero, junior 174-pounder Kimball Bastian and junior 197-pounder Tanner Orndorff. The lone qualifier not coming back is departed senior and two-time NCAA qualifier Dustin Dennison (heavyweight).

A trio of Wolverines will enter season ranked in the InterMat Preseason Poll led by Romero and Bastian, who will both enter 2018-19 ranked 15th in their respective weight class. Redshirt freshman Tate Orndorff, who is anticipated to start for the Wolverines at heavyweight this season, also finds himself ranked 19th nationally. Tate Orndorff is the younger brother of two-time NCAA qualifier Tanner Orndorff.

In all, UVU welcomes back a total of nine starters this season in LaMont (125 last season, 133 this season), sophomore Durbin Lloren (141), sophomore Matt Findlay (141), senior Matthew Ontiveros (149), junior Grant LaMont (149 last season, 157 this season), senior Raider Lofthouse (157), Romero (165), Bastian (174), sophomore Gary Jantzer (184) and Tanner Orndorff (197). Unfortunately, Taylor LaMont, who earned the No. 7 seed at nationals as a redshirt freshman last season, is slated to miss the 2018-19 campaign for UVU due to an injury.

National Wrestling Coaches Association Division I Wrestling Coaches Poll

October 31, 2018

Penn State opens season unanimous No. 1 in NWCA Division I Wrestling Coaches Poll

Manheim, Pa. – Penn State received all 16 first-place votes in the NWCA Division I Wrestling Coaches Poll to start the 2018-19 season at No. 1, the NWCA announced Wednesday. In addition to the Nittany Lions, the Big Ten Conference has four of the top-five teams in No. 2 Ohio State, No. 3 Iowa and No. 5 Michigan.

Link: http://www.nwcaonline.com/penn-state-opens-season-unanimous-no-1-nwca-division-wrestling-coaches-poll/

Penn State is coming off its seventh NCAA championship in the last eight years, while also wrapping up its third straight undefeated campaign. PSU head coach Cael Sanderson’s squad returns past NCAA Division I champions Jason Nolf, Vincenzo Joseph, Mark Hall and Bo Nickal. Entering his 10th year as head coach in Happy Valley, Sanderson is aiming to extend the Nittany Lions’ school record 45-dual winning streak when they open the season against Kent State at home on November 11.

Overall, the 11 of the Big Ten’s 14 schools are in the top 25 to start the season. Among the top-five squads, Ohio State returns a host of All-Americans including past NCAA champion Myles Martin. Bolstered by returning NCAA and Big Ten 125-pound champion Spencer Lee, Iowa is expected to contend for Big Ten and NCAA team championships. The Hawkeyes also will put a formidable dual team on the mat.

Fourth-ranked Oklahoma State starts the year as the highest-ranked Big 12 Conference team and returns enough firepower to make this season interesting. No. 14 Northern Iowa, No. 20 South Dakota State and No. 22 Wyoming round out ranked teams hailing from the Big 12

Four of the six ACC schools are in the top 25, with NC State coming in at No. 8, while Virginia Tech checks in at No. 11. Tobacco Road rivals North Carolina and Duke, who makes its first-ever appearance in the NWCA Division I Wrestling Coaches Poll, are listed back-to-back at Nos. 23 and No. 24, respectively.

Sixth-ranked Lehigh and ninth-ranked Cornell are the lone schools represented from the EIWA. Four conferences have a single team included on the poll: No. 7 Missouri (MAC), No. 20 Lock Haven (EWL), No. 10 Arizona State (Pac-12), No. 25 Appalachian State (Southern Conference).

The NWCA Division I Wrestling Coaches Poll is voted on by two coaches from each Division I wrestling conference. Each first-place vote is worth 25 points, 24 points for a second-place vote, 23 for a third-place vote and so on through to one point for a 25th-place vote.

Bout Updates

MCKENNA FACES OKLAHOMA STATE’S KAID BROCK

Joey McKenna represents the 22nd Buckeye to compete in the NWCA All-Star Classic since 1970.

The senior from Towaco, N.J., has compiled a 79-8 record and placed third at the NCAA Championships twice (2016, 2018). He enters his final collegiate campaign after being crowned a U.S. Open champion this summer.

Brock owns a 59-9 career mark and is known as a ‘giant killer’ with 10 victories over All-Americans the past three years. This season marks his first at 141 pounds, however, after previously competing at 133.

<<PROBABLE LINEUPS>>

HISTORY WITH THE MIDSHIPMEN

The last dual between Ohio State and Navy occurred over two decades ago on Jan. 14, 1996. The Buckeyes were victorious, 27-6, in that one after a similar result three years earlier (1996; W, 28-6). Navy was triumphant in the series’ first clash, however, a 34-0 Buckeye blanking back in 1943. Saturday marks the fourth meeting all-time.

MARTN, MOORE READY FOR U23 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Myles Martin (86 kg) and Kollin Moore (97 kg) represent 20 percent of Team USA’s roster for the U23 World Championships which will be contested Nov. 12-18 in Bucharest, Romania. In preparation for the international competition, Moore will miss the Navy dual held at Martin’s alma mater (McDonogh School) while both Buckeyes will be out of the lineup for matches at Cal Baptist (Nov. 16) and Arizona State (Nov. 18).

PRESEASON RANKINGS

Ohio State is slotted No. 2 unanimously in the preseason national rankings and seven Buckeye wrestlers are ranked Top-15 in their respective weight classes by FloWrestling:

133 lbs | No. 3 Luke Pletcher

141 lbs | No. 2 Joey McKenna

149 lbs | No. 2 Micah Jordan

157 lbs | No. 6 Ke-Shawn Hayes

174 lbs | No. 13 Te’Shan Campbell

184 lbs | No. 1 Myles Martin

197 lbs | No. 3 Kollin Moore

MEDIA DARLINGS

No collegiate wrestling program in the country will be featured on a national stage more often than Ohio State during the 2018-19 season as the Buckeyes have been tabbed for an NCAA-best five nationally-broadcast duals. The Big Ten Network will air four Buckeye matches while No. 2 Ohio State’s top-10 non-conference tilt with No. 9 North Carolina State (Jan. 6; 6 p.m. ET) rolls out live on ESPN2.

BTN is set to showcase conference clashes vs. Wisconsin (Dec. 9; 4 p.m.), vs. Michigan (Jan. 25; 7 p.m.), at Illinois (Feb. 1; 9 p.m.) and vs. Penn State (Feb. 8; 8:30 p.m.). The rivalry scuffle against the Wolverines will go down at Value City Arena inside the Schottenstein Center.

MICHIGAN STATE OPEN

In addition to the competition discussed above, a large contingent of unattached Buckeyes are entered into the Michigan State Open on Saturday (Nov. 3). TrackWrestling will provide video ($) and live results (free).

Lincoln, Neb. -- The Nebraska wrestling team held its annual Intrasquad Wrestle-Offs on Thursday evening. For the first time, the event took place inside the Hendricks Training Complex. Fans packed both the bleachers and the temporary seating set up for the event as they got their first look at the 2018-19 Huskers.

"We wanted to make a nice environment here in the wrestling room for the fans," Nebraska Wrestling Head Coach Mark Manning said. "We had a lot of great action tonight. It's hard to wrestle teammates, but we had several weight classes where we needed to figure out who was going to step up and take the starting spot. I saw guys working really hard out there tonight and showing a lot of composure."

This year’s wrestle-offs featured bouts at eight different weight classes, with two bouts each at both 133 and 141 pounds.

To start off the action at 133 pounds, Brian Peska defeated Tucker Sjomeling by decision, 6-5. In the second 133-pound bout, redshirt freshman Christian Miller won in a decision over true freshman Jevon Parrish, 7-0. In a battle of the 133 pound winners, Miller won by decision, 3-1.

Redshirt junior Jordan Shearer won by decision against Collin Purinton, 10-4. Purinton went 1-2 in dual action last year, while Shearer will have the opportunity to compete in his first dual this season.

Two-time All-American Tyler Berger put on a show for the fans in his match at 157 pounds, winning by major decision, 15-1 over true freshman Peyton Robb, a three-time state champion at 160 pounds from Owatonna, Minn. Eric Schultz, one of Nebraska’s five returning NCAA qualifiers, won his bout at 197 pounds in a dominating performance. He won by technical fall, 26-10 over Anthony Gaona, a freshman from Olathe, Kan.

Coach Manning commented on the impressive efforts from Berger and Schultz, two of his returning NCAA qualifiers from last season.

"Those two wrestled probably as well as I have ever seen them wrestle tonight," Manning said. "Tyler Berger is an elite wrestler, and Schultz continues to show his improvement every time he gets out there. For our young guys that had to go up against those two tonight, there's no shame in getting beat. They'll take their lumps but this is only going to make them better."

Redshirt sophomore Chad Red Jr., the second of the three returning All-Americans for NU, won in a decision over Kyle Ruettiger, 6-1, at 141 pounds.

Johnny Blankenship defeated Dalton Peters by decision, 2-1, in one of the most hotly contested bouts of the night. Redshirt freshman Labriola followed up Blankenship's victory with a win of his own. He won by major decision over Cade Svoboda, a redshirt sophomore from Ord, Neb. Labriola is ranked as the No. 11 wrestler in the country at 174 pounds by both FloWrestling and OpenMat’s rankings.

In the heavyweight bout, Patrick Grayson battled Christian Lance, a junior who transferred from Division II Fort Hays State in the offseason. After two overtime periods, Lance won by decision, 3-3, based on riding time.

Taylor Venz, the last of the three returning All-Americans for Nebraska, did not compete tonight as he will be competing in the NWCA All-Star Classic in Denver, Colo. tomorrow night. Zeke Moisey (125), a redshirt senior who transfered from West Virginia in the offseason, sat out tonight with an injury but is expected to make his Husker debut next weekend. Moisey was a two-time NCAA Championships qualifier at WVU.

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Myles Martin put on a show in front of the ‘home’ crowd with a 21-6 technical fall during an Ohio State-hosted dual vs. Navy at his alma mater, McDonogh School. Martin was one of eight Buckeyes to arise victorious in the second-ranked Buckeyes’ 28-9 triumph.

Martin wasn’t the only Scarlet-clad grappler to register a dominating tech fall. Fellow senior captain Micah Jordan shined in the evening’s lone nationally-ranked showdown with a 16-1 besting of No. 19 Jared Prince.

In the opening bout, Ke-Shawn Hayes found himself trailing 3-1 entering the third period and electing to start in the bottom position. After a quick escape, he lifted an ankle and tagged Connor Prince with a trip for two. Hayes would tack on another takedown and the riding time tally for a 7-5 final score at 157 pounds.

Kaleb Romero, making his Ohio State varsity debut, performed third-period magic as well. He nailed a blast double for the bout-winning takedown with eight seconds left on the clock. His 3-2 decision represented his first career win and pushed the Buckeyes ahead 6-0.

Jumping up to 174 pounds for his senior season did little to deter Te’Shan Campbell’s elite top position effort. He executed his patented tilt twice in the second stanza for a half dozen near-fall points. Campbell then held on for an 8-5 decision and Ohio State went up 9-0.

The main event came next as Martin took to the mat. He did not disappoint with 10 takedowns and the aforementioned 21-6 tech midway through the second period.

Kevin Snyder was in the attack in the first, firing shot after shot. The 197-pound Buckeye was able to finish off a takedown but did force a ‘hands to the face’ penalty point on Joshua Roetman. The 1-0 edge remained going to the second before Roetman caught Snyder in a cradle and capped off the fall at 3:39 for Navy’s first bout win.

The heavyweights grinded to a 1-1 stalemate though the first six minutes and 20 seconds. Then, Ohio State’s Gary Traub notched a takedown and seized the 3-1 ‘W.’

As the match flipped over to 125 pounds, the Midshipmen returned the favor with a late-match win of their own. Jacob Allen popped out of a long scramble and ended up on top with 20 seconds remaining to hand Brakan Mead a 5-4 defeat.

Picking up where he left off during the 2017-18 season, Luke Pletcher grinded out a 7-4 decision over Casey Cobb at 133 pounds. Eighteen of his 30 wins a year ago came by three points or less.

Less than 24 hours after handing No. 4 Kaid Brock (Oklahoma State) an 11-4 loss in the NWCA All-Star Classic two time zones away in Denver, Joey McKenna battled for a 3-2 win over Nicholas Gil. The tilt sat tied at 2-2 entering the third period before McKenna rode him out for the entire two minutes to activate the riding time point and the 3-2 edge.

The cherry on top came in the form of a top-20 showdown between No. 2 Micah Jordan and No. 19 Jared Prince at 149 pounds. It was complete domination as Jordan produced a 16-1 tech fall.

Six Wolverines earn podium finishes at Cowboy Open
11/3/2018 | Wrestling
LARAMIE, Wyo. - With primarily backups and redshirts in attendance, a total of six Utah Valley University grapplers earned podium finishes on Saturday at the Cowboy Open in Laramie.

In the elite division, sophomore Benjamin Andrew led the way by placing second at heavyweight, while redshirt sophomore Koy Wilkinson finished third at 165 and redshirt freshman Jakob Discher placed fourth at 165. In an amateur division, a pair of unattached freshmen won titles in Cameron Haddock (149 pounds) and Jayden Woodruff (197). Fellow unattached freshman Chase Trussell too had a nice outing by finishing second at heavyweight in the amateur bracket.

Andrew wrestled his way to a 2-1 record on the day on his way to earning a runner-up finish. After picking up wins over Wyoming's Hunter Mullis (3-1) and Chadron State's Wade French (11-7), Andrew then dropped the title bout to Nebraska-Kearney's Jarrod Hinrichs by a score of 4-1.

Wilkinson picked up a third-place finish after going 4-1 at the season-opening event. Wilkinson started his tournament with wins over Chadron State's Tate Allison (4-1) and Providence's Josh Beckler (21-5). After falling to No. 11 Branson Ashworth of Wyoming (16-1), the Wolverine 165-pound sophomore responded with a 2-1 decision over Nebraska-Kearney's Walker Johnson to reach the third-place bout. For third place, Wilkinson then matched up with his teammate Discher. Wilkinson managed to get the best of Dishcer, winning the third-place bout by major decision (12-3).

Discher finished his opening-season event with a 3-2 outing on his way to placing fourth at 165 pounds. After falling to Montana State-Northern's Andrew Bartel (13-1) in his opening match, Discher responded with three straight wins over Providence's Josh Beckler (15-7), Nebraska-Kearney Talon Seitz (18-4) and Air Force's Adam Pelter (13-2). He then dropped his third-place contest to teammate Wilkinson (12-3).

In the amateur division, unattached freshmen Haddock and Woodruff both won titles by going a perfect 4-0 and 3-0, respectively. Fellow unattached freshman Trussell followed by placing second with a 4-1 clip.

In other action, sophomore Landon Knutzen (149), as well as redshirt freshmen Spencer Heywood (157) and Ashton Seely (197) all recorded 2-2 outings on the day. Junior Max Sultan followed with a 1-2 clip at 157, while redshirt freshman Dante Springsteen went 0-2 at 174.

Seven other unattached Utah Valley freshmen participated in Saturday's Cowboy Open. Josiah Nava (125) fronted the group by going 4-2, while Will Edelblute (125) and Baylor Steward each went 3-2, Josh Tolentino (149) went 2-2, and Kainalu Estrella (133), Jerry Rubio (157) and Jason Gissel (184) all posted 1-2 outings.

The starting group of Wolverines will officially begin their 2018-19 campaign on Saturday, Nov. 10 at the Journeymen Northeast Duals in Troy, New York. There, UVU will wrestle No. 12 Nebraska, No. 16 Rutgers and Niagara County CC. The following day, the Wolverines will then take part in the Journeymen Collegiate Classic open tournament. The Wolverines will enter the weekend currently receiving votes for the NWCA Division I Wrestling Top 25 Coaches Poll with four votes.

No. 22 North Dakota State Earns 35-4 Win over Northern Illinois

FARGO, N.D. – No. 22-ranked North Dakota State won 9 of 10 matches and closed with a pair of falls from 197 Cordell Eaton and 285 Brandon Metz to finish off a hard-fought 35-4 win over Northern Illinois in a non-conference dual Thursday, Nov. 8, before 502 spectators in the Scheels Center at the Sanford Health Athletic Complex.

North Dakota State improved to 2-0 this season, while the Huskies dropped to 0-1. NDSU is scheduled to host the 48th annual Bison Open starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, in Scheels Center including wrestlers from nationally-ranked Arizona State, Minnesota and South Dakota State.

Eaton, a redshirt junior from Long Grove, Iowa, grinded out a fall in 4-minutes, 33-seconds for his second win of the season. Metz, a redshirt freshman from West Fargo, needed just 21-seconds to complete pin and energize the crowd in the finale to even his record at 1-1.

North Dakota State won the first six matches highlighted by the 15-0 tech fall from No. 17-ranked 133-pounder Cam Sykora. Sykora (2-0) was second in the nation last season with a dozen tech falls. NDSU’s No. 23-ranked Brent Fleetwood closed out strong for a 7-1 win over Bryce West at 125 pounds.

The Bison had to persevere over the next four of five weights. Gavin Sutton (1-1) recorded his first collegiate win, a 7-4 decision over NIU’s Anthony Cheloni. Sutton led 6-4 with 1:36 remaining when NDSU won a challenge and a Cheloni takedown was overturned.

North Dakota State redshirt freshman Jaden Van Maanen (2-0) used a bullish second period that included an escape and 4-point near fall to take a 5-0 lead and take an 8-4 decision over McCoy Kent at 149 pounds. NDSU 157-pounder Nick Knutson (1-1) recorded a first period takedown, and allowed only a penalty point and escape in a 4-2 win over Mason Kauffman to put the Bison ahead 17-0.

No. 12-ranked Andrew Fogarty (2-0) had his hands full with Kenny Moore at 165 pounds in a 3-2 win. Fogarty and Moore were scoreless after one period. Moore recorded the only takedown in the match in the second, but Fogarty countered with a pair of escapes. Fogarty then held the top position for the entire third period and gained the deciding point with 1-minute, 43-seconds of riding time.

The lone win for Northern Illinois came at 174 pounds where Brit Wilson posted a 15-4 major decision over No. 24-ranked Lorenzo De La Riva.

After another scoreless first period, NDSU 184-pounder Tyler McNutt recorded a takedown with 6-seconds left to take a 3-2 lead in the second and held the top spot for the entire third to earn the riding time point in a 4-2 decision over Caden McWhirter.

Laramie, Wyo. – The #12 Nebraska wrestling team responded to a tough loss on Friday night against Wisconsin by going on the road and beating a talented Wyoming team, 22-12. Heading into intermission, the dual was tied at nine. The Huskers took four out of the final five matches, however, winning the dual going away.

“We got better from Friday night to today’s performance,” Head Coach Mark Manning said. “I believe this team we wrestled today was every bit as good as the team we wrestled on Friday.”

The team needed to get off to a strong start, and that’s just what they did in winning the first two bouts to take a 6-0 lead.

No. 3 Taylor Venz started the action off with a 7-1 win over Careless Looney at 184 pounds. He went up 3-0 in the first period and never took his foot off the gas. Eric Schultz (197) followed up Venz’ performance with a hard-fought 7-3 decision.

Adversity hit in the next two matches when Brian Andrews of Wyoming pinned Christian Lance in the heavyweight battle and Cole Verner upset No. 6 Zeke Moisey to put Wyoming up 9-6.

In the final match before intermission, redshirt freshman Tucker Sjomeling responded with a breakout performance and upset No. 8 Montorie Bridges with a 13-11 decision. Bridges earned All-America honors last season after going 35-7 in 2017-18. He made it all the way to the NCAA Championship quarterfinals before being eliminated.

Coming out of the intermission tied at nine, returning All-American Chad Red Jr. (141) helped his team tack on three more points as he held off Sam Turner in a victory by decision, 6-2. Red Jr. did not compete on Friday night against Wisconsin.

Jordan Shearer got the nod at 149-pounds and responded with a workmanlike effort in a 5-0 decision victory over Wyoming’s Jaron Jensen. Shearer looked to be in control the entire match as he accumulated 2:30 of riding time. The win brings Shearer to 6-2 overall on the year.

Two-time All-American Tyler Berger (157) continued his dominance in the early stages of his senior year. Berger moved to 5-0 on the season after winning by major decision for the fifth time in as many matches. His 14-1 victory put Nebraska up 19-9 with just three bouts remaining.

In one of the most anticipated matches of the night, #10 Branson Ashworth of Wyoming defeated #11 Isaiah White in a 3-0 decision. White defeated Ashworth in two separate matches last season.

#10 Mikey Labriola responded to a tough loss on Friday night against Wisconsin’s Ryan Christensen by defeating Hayden Hastings, 14-11. The win brings Labriola to 8-1 on the season.

“What changed from Friday night was the mentality we competed with and pushing the pace,” Manning said. “We need to take another jump with our team before heading out to Las Vegas in two weeks.”

Cowboys Come up Short to No. 7 Huskers in Home Opener

LARAMIE, Wyo. (Nov. 18, 2018) – The Wyoming team got a handful of strong performances in its dual against No. 7 Nebraska, but came up short, 22-12, to the Huskers.

The Cowboys (2-1) saw big wins from Brian Andrews, Cole Verner and Branson Ashworth in the match. Andrews scored the lone bonus point win for the Pokes with a big fall at heavyweight, while Ashworth and Verner both earned top-10 wins at their weights.

“Going into the dual, we were only favored in one match and we ended up losing it, so you know it could go pretty badly, but then you have guys that step up and wrestle well early,” head coach Mark Branch said. “That’s what I was afraid of too, because if you could’ve chose a weight to start at, that wouldn’t have been where we started. We knew coming out of the gate we were probably underdogs in the first four matches, and if you drop the first four it’s going to be tough to turn things around.

“Then we won two of the first four with a pin, so I wouldn’t say that things went great in the first four, but at the same time we had momentum. We had excitement and we had engagement, then we just lost it.”

The dual started at 184 pounds, as Nebraska picked up wins at 184 and 197 to open the day with a 6-0 lead. Nebraska’s third-ranked Taylor Venz earned a 7-1 decision over Cowboy Carless Looney in the first bout of the match before No. 14 Eric Schultz edged out Wyoming’s Cale Davidson, 7-3.

The Huskers wouldn’t hold the advantage for long, however, as Andrews decked Christian Lance to tie up the team score at six. After a scoreless first period, Andrews chose down and escaped to take a 1-0 lead. With 12 seconds to go in the second, the Cowboy sophomore scored a takedown before taking Lance to his back for the pin with seven seconds to go in the frame. The win moved Andrews to 3-0 in dual matches and 9-1 overall. It was his second pin of the season.

Verner faced a tough test at 125 pounds, matched up with two-time All-American and 2015 NCAA finalist Zeke Moisey; however, the Cowboy junior was up for the challenge, taking the bout, 5-2 over the fifth-ranked Husker. Moisey scored the first takedown of the match, before an escape from Verner less than 20 seconds later to get to the end of the first period with a 2-1 Moisey lead. Moisey chose down to open the second and Verner took advantage by riding out the full two minutes. In the third, Verner got the quick escape to tie up the match, and recorded a last-second escape as the clock wound down to lock up the first ranked win of his career.

“I knew it was going to be a tough match,” Verner said. “I knew he was a pretty tough kid. We had a talk last week in New York, and Branson said ‘It doesn’t matter who you’re wrestling, just make sure you go out there and wrestle your best and the outcomes will come your way.’ That’s what I did. I just went out there, gave it my all and was fortunate to come out with the win.”

Nebraska would get wins in the next four bouts to stretch its lead to 10 at 19-9. At 165, Ashworth answered with a big win over No. 9 Isaiah White. Ashworth was able to escape from the down position quickly to open the second period and take a 1-0 lead following a scoreless first. White chose down to open the final frame, but couldn’t get out as the Cowboy senior rode out the match while picking up a couple of stall warnings on White on the way to the 3-0 decision.

The win was Ashworth’s third ranked win of the season and moved him to 9-1 overall.

“I just wanted to wrestle hard for seven minutes,” Ashworth said. “I wrestled him twice and he beat me twice last year, so I know he comes out fast, he’s explosive, he’s strong. He’s a great wrestler, but today I just wanted to keep hard pressure on him and wear him down. I knew my gas tank would be better than his up in the elevation. I knew I could get him tired and then in the third period he wanted to go down, and I’m good on top so I knew I could take advantage of that.”

At 174 pounds, redshirt freshman Hayden Hastings was up against No. 10 Mikey Labriola to close out the dual. Labriola came out hot, stretching his lead to 10-4 early on against the Cowboy freshman. Hastings found his footing early in the third, however, and despite not getting the win, scored a couple of takedowns in the final two minutes to narrow Labriola’s advantage to 14-11 before the final buzzer.

The Cowboys will hit the road next weekend, when they travel to Stillwater, Okla., for a showdown at No. 2 Oklahoma State.

TEMPE, Ariz. – The No. 2 Ohio State University wrestling team improved to 3-0 by winning six of 10 bouts in a top-10 tilt on the road at No. 10 Arizona State (1-2). The Buckeyes were without the services of All-Americans Myles Martin and Kollin Moore who spent the weekend competing for Team USA at the U23 World Championships in Romania. Moore came back to the States with a silver medal in-hand.

Ohio State has won six meetings in a row against the Sun Devils, including each of the last five seasons, and now leads the all-time series 6-2.

BOUT RESULTS

141 lbs | No. 2 Joey McKenna (OSU) def. Cory Crooks (ASU) | MD, 13-0; TS: 8-5

149 lbs | No. 2 Micah Jordan (OSU) def. No. 11 Josh Maruca (ASU) | MD, 18-8; TS: 12-5

157 lbs | No. 5 Ke-Shawn Hayes (OSU) def. Christian Pagdilao (ASU) | D, 4-3; TS: 15-5

165 lbs | No. 8 Josh Shields (ASU) def. Kaleb Romero (OSU) | D, 5-0; TS: 15-8

174 lbs | No. 1 Zahid Valencia (ASU) def. No. 11 Te’Shan Campbell (OSU) | D, 6-1; TS: 15-11

184 lbs | Kordell Norfleet (ASU) def. Ethan Smith (OSU) | PIN, 6:15; TS: 15-17

197 lbs | Kevin Snyder (OSU) def. Austyn Harris (ASU) | MD, 12-3; TS: 19-17

285 lbs | Chase Singletary (OSU) def. Brady Daniel (ASU) | D, 3-1; TS: 22-17

The match began at 125 pounds where Brady Koontz made his first career start. And it was quite the challenge presented to the redshirt freshman, facing sixth-ranked and unbeaten Ryan Millhof. Koontz tallied a lone escape point en route to an 18-1 tech fall for Millhof.

Luke Pletcher responded in the 133-pound bout, racking up seven takedowns and posting a 16-6 major decision to pull the Buckeyes to within one at 5-4 on the team scoreboard.

Joey McKenna (141 lbs) followed suit with a major decision of his own. He took down and turned Cory Crooks for a half dozen points in the first period. McKenna would go on to add seven more points while shutting out Crooks, 13-0.

A pair of nationally-ranked foes took to the mat at 149 pounds when No. 2 Micah Jordan shook hands with No. 11 Josh Maruca. Jordan quickly wiped away any thoughts of a potential upset, nailing Maruca for three first-period takedowns. He kept the pedal to the metal with five more takedowns in the second and ultimately came away with Ohio State’s third consecutive major decision (18-8).

Christian Pagdilao took his shot at the upset bid in the subsequent bout (157 lbs), giving No. 5 Ke-Shawn Hayes a legitimate scare. The Sun Devil struck first with a takedown. Pagdilao maintained his two-point edge going to the third after each combatant earned escapes, Hayes in the first after the takedown and Pagdilao following his selection to begin period number two on bottom. Hayes made the same chose, hitting the deck to start Period 3. He broke free for a 3-2 score and registered the go-ahead takedown in the closing seconds for a 4-3 triumph. Hayes moved his season mark to 7-0 and increased the Buckeye team lead to 15-5 at intermission.

National rankings favored Arizona State at 165 and 174 pounds, and ultimately both Sun Devils took care of business. Kaleb Romero, a redshirt freshman facing No. 8 Josh Shields, and Te’Shan Campbell up against the defending national champion Zahid Valencia battled tough though – surrendering the minimum six team points with back-to-back decisions.

Ohio State was not so fortunate at 184 pounds, however, when Kordell Norfleet pinned Ethan Smith to lift the Sun Devils back on top 17-15 with two bouts to go.

With the pressure building, Kevin Snyder didn’t flinch. He raced out to a 6-2 advantage on three takedowns in the opening frame. He would give up no offensive points and force a pair of stalling warnings in a 12-3 major decision over Austyn Harris. Snyder’s fifth win of the year set up a ‘winner take all’ scenario at heavyweight.

Chase Singletary did not disappoint. He and Brady Daniel tussled to a 1-1 stalemate through the bout’s first six minutes. Singletary then made one final push and secured the match-winning takedown and Ohio State left Tempe as 22-17 victors.

The Buckeyes turn the page and pursue their third straight Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational (Nov. 30-Dec. 1) title. Ohio State cleared the field by 15.5 points in last year’s event despite being without three All-Americans (including two national champions) missing from the lineup. Three individual champions were crowned while donning the Scarlet & Gray — Luke Pletcher, Myles Martin and Kollin Moore.

Fleetwood Reaches CKLV Semifinals, Sykora & Eaton Battling in Consolation Bracket
LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- North Dakota State 125-pounder Brent Fleetwood advanced to the semifinals of the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational at the Las Vegas Convention Center, while 133 Cam Sykora and 197 Cordell Eaton are still battling in CKLV consolation bracket. The Bison are in 14th place in the team standings with 38.5 points.

Unseeded and No. 21-ranked Fleetwood, a redshirt senior from Smyrna, Del., moves into the semifinals against top-seeded and No. 2 Sebastian Rivera of Northwestern at 12 p.m. Central Time on Saturday, Dec. 1. The two didn't wrestle when NDSU upset the No. 17-ranked Wildcats in Fargo on Nov. 4.

Fleetwood came up with a takedown with 12-seconds left in the third period to upset No. 4 seed and No. 5-ranked Louie Hayes of Virginia by the score of 4-2. He used the momentum to post an impressive 10-3 decision over No. 5 seed and No. 8-ranked Zeke Moisey of Nebraska. Fleetwood improved to 10-0 overall and 3-0 in the tournament.

North Dakota State's only seeded wrestler, No. 11 (No. 14) Sykora, bounced back with a vengeance following a 6-2 loss to No. 17 Micky Phillipi with a pair of tech falls that ran his season total to five. The redshirt junior from Wheaton, Minn., went the distance for the first tech fall, 24-9 at 7:00, over Utah Valley's Mitch Brown, and dispatched Ty Smith of Drexel 18-3 at 6:09 for the second. Sykora is now 10-1 and 3-1 in the tournament.

Eaton, a redshirt junior from Long Grove, Iowa, grinded out three wins in the consolation bracket after dropping a 12-3 major decision to top-seeded and No. 3-ranked Collin Moore of Ohio State. It started with a 13-5 major decision over Matthew Correnti of Rutgers. He followed with a 5-2 decision over No. 11 seed and No. 25-ranked Zack Chakonis and closed with a strong third period in a 3-1 win over Andre Lee of Illinois. Eaton improved to 10-1 overall and 3-1 in the tournament.

Sykora and Eaton begin wrestling at 11 a.m. CT on Saturday. The consolation semifinals, along with the fifth and seventh place bouts are scheduled for 12 p.m. The finals for first and third are scheduled for 5 p.m.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.—No. 20-ranked North Dakota State dropped a pair of close decisions to West Virginia 19-17 on the final bout and No. 12 North Carolina 20-19 on criteria, but rebounded by bouncing Indiana 33-9 South Beach Duals on Sunday, Dec. 30, in the Fort Lauderdale Convention Center.

Travel issues forced the Bison to reschedule after missing Saturday's two duals, including a date with No. 8-ranked Cornell, and hit the mat for three matches on Sunday.

NDSU (6-3, 2-2 #Big12WR) is schedule to host No. 23 Iowa State at 7 p.m. Jan. 9 in Scheels Center.

Five North Dakota State wrestlers won a pair of matches led by the 2-0 efforts by No. 9-ranked 125 Brent Fleetwood (15-3, 7-1) and 174 Lorenzo De La Riva. De La Riva (12-6, 5-3) recorded a tech fall and a major decision against North Carolina and Indiana, while Fleetwood picked up a forfeit and major decision.

Three NDSU wrestlers, No. 17 133 Cam Sykora (15-3, 7-1), No. 18 165 Andrew Fogarty (10-3, 7-2), and 197 Cordell Eaton (13-5, 6-3) all won 2 of 3 bouts after losing against West Virginia. Sykora recorded major decision and his seventh tech fall of the season and Fogarty picked up his sixth pin of the season.

North Dakota State heavyweight Dan Stibral (15-4, 1-0) recorded his fifth pin in his first dual action of the season to close out the win over Indiana.

In their home opener, the Bears (2-2, 0-1 EIWA) won two of three bouts to open the second half of the dual meet but could not come back from a 20-0 deficit after the visiting Black Knights (4-2, 4-0 EIWA) won the meet’s first five bouts, remaining undefeated in conference duals.

“Army is a very good, well-disciplined program,” Brown head coach Todd Beckerman said. “We are a little banged up, but Army deserves all the credit for the way they performed tonight. We have two more big conference duals this weekend and will make some adjustments to get ready for F&M and Bucknell on Saturday.”

Viruet tallied the only points of the first period with a takedown and added two escapes in the second stanza to remain ahead 4-2. LaFragola captured a 5-2 decision at 184 pounds over C.J. Morgan. After a scoreless first period, LaFragola pulled ahead 3-0 at the end of the second stanza with an escape and a takedown. He added another takedown in the third frame for the final score.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Josh Alber knocked off his first top-five opponent of the year, but No. 15 UNI wrestling fell to No. 5 Missouri, 29-12.

UNI now 2-4 overall (2-0 Big 12) was unable to snap Mizzou’s win streak, now at 32. Mizzou improved to 12-0 overall (5-0 MAC). UNI was the last team to beat Missouri in 2017.

The Panthers fell behind early with losses at 125 pounds and 133 pounds before Alber got the Panthers on the board at 141 pounds.

Alber avenged a loss from last year to knock off No. 3 Jaydin Eireman with a 4-3 decision. Eierman is a two-time All-American. He was fourth last year and fifth in 2017 at the NCAA championships.

The win over Eierman was Alber’s fourth top-20 win this year and his ninth consecutive win since falling to top-ranked Yianni Diakomihalis of Cornell in a Dec. 16 dual.

No. 12 Steiert just missed a major decision in his second meeting this season with No. 13 Connor Flynn at 165 pounds. Steiert had a dominating match with an early takedown and reversal. He drew two stalling points and riding time to beat Flynn, 7-1.

The win over Flynn was Steiert’s fourth top-20 win this season.

A forfeit at 184 pounds made Drew Foster the final Panther to earn points for UNI.

UNI continues to lead the series record 20-13 against Missouri.

Brown Wrestling Sweeps Past F&M, 21-18, Bucknell, 20-18, in EIWA Duals

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Seniors Jon Viruet and CJ LaFragola both won twice on the day as Brown University wrestling swept past Franklin & Marshall College, 21-18, and Bucknell University, 20-18, in a pair of EIWA dual meets on Saturday at the Pizzitola Sports Center to cap its home-opening weekend.

The Bears (4-2, 2-1 EIWA) opened with a 10-0 lead and held an edge as large as 21-9 against the Diplomats (2-2, 0-1 EIWA) in their first dual of the day before rallying from a 15-3 deficit – winning four of the last five bouts – to upend the Bison (3-6, 1-3 EIWA) in the nightcap.

“I’m really proud of the way our team competed today to come away with two wins in conference duals,” Brown head coach Todd Beckerman said. “We found different ways to win in both duals. Against F&M, we had some key early victories and then added some timely bonus-point wins. Against Bucknell, we showed tremendous resiliency and battled through all 10 weight classes.”

Viruet (Springfield, Mass.) tallied 10 team points on the day, including his third fall of the year, and now has 20 wins on the season – his third straight 20-win campaign. LaFragola (Little Egg Harbor, N.J.) posted eight team points, including his first technical fall of the year. Against Bucknell, Viruet’s major decision initiated a 17-3 run that Brown used to close and win the dual.

Next, Brown hosts a pair of EIWA duals on Saturday, Jan. 26 against No. 10 Cornell at 11:00 a.m. (ESPN+) and Binghamton at 7:00 p.m. in the program’s fifth annual “Rumble and Tumble” combined meet with Brown gymnastics.

Dual 1: Brown 21, Franklin & Marshall 18

Senior Jon Viruet posted a pin at 165 pounds, and senior CJ LaFragola tallied a technical fall at 184 pounds to propel Brown past Franklin & Marshall, 21-18, in an EIWA dual meet on Saturday morning.

The Bears won the dual’s first three bouts to take a 10-0 lead and registered bonus-point wins from Viruet (Springfield, Mass.) and LaFragola (Little Egg Harbor, N.J.) in the second half of the meet to secure the win over the Diplomats.

Viruet recorded his third fall and 19th win of the year while LaFragola notched his first technical fall and 14th win of the season. At 133 pounds, freshman Reese Fry (Manchester, Mich.) charted his third major decision of the year. Junior Trey Keeley (Washington, Ill.) and freshman Colin Realbuto (Somers, N.Y.) won via decision at 125 and 141 pounds respectively.

Keeley opened the dual with an 8-5 victory over Jose Diaz at 125 pounds. He gained a 4-2 lead at the end of the first period and an 8-4 edge at the end of the second stanza en route to the win.

Fry gave the Bears a 7-0 lead in the team score with his 13-4 major decision over Mike Simonetti at 133 pounds. Fry staked himself to a 5-2 lead at the end of the first, went ahead 8-2 through two periods, and added five points in the final frame.

The Bears captured their third consecutive bout as Realbuto took a 6-2 decision at 141 pounds over Paddy Quinlan, extending Brown’s team lead to 10-0. With the score tied 2-2 entering the third period, Realbuto tallied an escape, takedown, and riding time point to seize the win.

After the Diplomats pulled within 10-6 in the team score, Viruet – ranked No. 18 in the nation – pushed Brown’s lead to 16-6 with a fall in the first period at the 0:57 mark over F&M’s Crew Fullerton at 165 pounds.

LaFragola gave Brown a 21-9 advantage in the team score with a 24-9 technical fall over Reid Robilotto at 184 pounds. LaFragola notched three takedowns in the first period to move ahead 6-3. He tacked on five more points to gain an 11-4 lead heading to the third period. In the final frame, he registered five takedowns and a 2-point near fall on his way to the win.

Facing a 15-3 deficit after the dual’s first five bouts, the Bears won three straight bouts to pull within 15-14 and remained within 18-14 heading to the 285-pound weight class before Butterbrodt (North Andover, Mass.) forced five stall warnings, resulting in a Bucknell disqualification and six team points for the Bears.

Viruet (Springfield, Mass.) captured his 20th win of the season – his third straight 20-win campaign – and his team-best sixth major decision of the year. Wilson (Nazareth, Pa.) notched his second major decision of the season.

Freshman Samuel Lynch (Foster, R.I.) scored six points inside final 10 seconds of his match to earn a decision, and senior CJ LaFragola (Little Egg Harbor, N.J.) tacked on a decision for his 15th win of the year.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa., and PRINCETON N.J. – Seniors Jon Viruet, CJ LaFragola, and Ian Butterbrodt all won twice on the day, but Brown University wrestling fell to the University of Pennsylvania, 18-16, and to No. 18 Princeton University, 25-10, on Saturday in a pair of Ivy League and EIWA dual meets on Saturday at The Palestra and Dillon Gymnasium respectively.

Competing in their first Ivy road duals of the year, the Bears (4-6, 2-5 EIWA, 0-3 Ivy) won five of 10 bouts against the Quakers (2-5, 1-3 EIWA, 1-0 Ivy) and captured three of the last five bouts against the nationally ranked Tigers (6-4, 3-0 EIWA, 2-0 Ivy) before dropping both decisions.

“We competed hard today on the road against two Ivy teams,” Brown head coach Todd Beckerman said. “We know that the intensity level picks up in Ivy duals, and we had guys step up to that challenge, but it wasn’t enough today. We’ll regroup this week and get back to work preparing for our next competition.”

NOT IN OUR HOUSE
Card tops No. 9 Arizona State

STANFORD, Calif. - With just eight seconds remaining, junior Gabriel Townsell converted a six-point move to clinch the dual win for No. 25 Stanford over No. 9 Arizona State, Saturday, at Burnham Pavilion.

Stanford won 6 of the 10 bouts to improve to 7-1 overall and 1-1 in the Pac-12, while Arizona State dropped to 4-9 on the season and 1-1 in the conference. The Sun Devils have not won on The Farm since 2013.

Townsell, who is ranked 20th nationally at 125 pounds, was trailing Arizona State's Brandon Courtney, 4-2, late in the third period. Courtney needed to score one more takedown to give the Sun Devils the dual victory (based on criteria), but Townsell had other plans. He faked an inside trip and as Courtney stepped back, Townsell used a lateral drop to score six as time expired.

Stanford started the dual off strong, taking a 10-0 lead after the first three bouts. Redshirt senior Mason Pengilly set the tone at 133 pounds with a 14-5 major decision over Josiah Kline. Pengilly scored all 14 of his points in the first two periods, including 10 near fall points in the opening frame. He remains undefeated in duals this season at 5-0.

Junior Brandon Kier won a hard-fought 10-8 decision against Cory Crooks at 141 pounds. A big first period was the difference as Kier improved to 2-2 on the year. Redshirt sophomore Requir van der Merwe added to the Cardinal lead with a 4-1 decision over Josh Maruca. Ranked No. 15 at 149 pounds, van der Merwe led 3-0 going into the final period and finished with 1:49 of riding time. He is now 18-6 overall and 7-1 in duals this season.

The Sun Devils won the next four bouts, including bonus points by No. 4 Josh Shields at 165 pounds and No. 2 Zahid Valencia at 174 pounds, to take a 15-10 lead in the dual.

Redshirt sophomore Nathan Traxler, who is ranked ninth nationally at 197 pounds, evened up the team score with a 17-1 technical fall over Keavon Buckley in 4:08. Traxler, who leads the team in wins, is now 22-4 overall and 8-0 in duals.

Redshirt freshman Haydn Maley gave the Cardinal some security with a 5-2 decision over Brady Daniel at heavyweight. Maley scored a takedown as time expired, which would have come up big had the dual score been tied and had to come down to criteria. Maley is now 19-8 overall and 4-2 in duals.

Stanford hits the road next week, traveling to Purdue on Friday, Feb. 8 and Indiana on Saturday, Feb. 9.

Huskers Squash Scarlet Knights, 31-9

Piscataway, N.J. -- The No. 6 Nebraska Cornhuskers displayed strong performances up and down the lineup on Friday night as they came away with a 31-9 victory over the #14 Rutgers Scarlet Knights. NU took eight of the ten bouts with five of the victories coming courtesy of bonus points.

The Huskers won four matches by major decision, three by decision and one by pinfall. For the third time in four matches, NU tallied at least four bonus-point wins in a dual victory.

#16 Zeke Moisey (125) got the Huskers going immediately with a 10-0 major decision to put the team up 4-0. Moisey has now won four of his last five matches and sits just six wins away from reaching the 100-win mark in his career.

In the next match, true freshman Jevon Parrish (133) was defeated by #5 Nick Suriano of Rutgers. Suriano was the national runner-up at 125 pounds last year after posting a 25-1 record. His 12-2 major decision over Parrish knotted the team score up at four.

#19 Chad Red Jr. (141) put four more points on the board for the Huskers with a major decision of his own over Peter Lipari. A second period takedown and a four-point nearfall gave Red Jr. a significant cushion and he was able to notch his third major of the season.

Rutgers held its final lead of the dual at 9-8 after #2 Anthony Ashnault defeated NU’s Jordan Shearer (149) by tech. fall, 16-1. Ashnault is now a perfect 18-0 on the year.

In the final match before intermission, Huskers senior #2 Tyler Berger (157) withstood a strong effort from RU’s #15 John Van Brill to take a 7-3 decision and improve to 18-2 on the season.

#6 Isaiah White won his 12th match in his last 13 duals by earning a 3-2 decision over Stephan Glasgow at 165-pounds. A first-period takedown by White was the only offense of the dual as the NU junior held off a couple last-second attacks by Glasgow.

Easton, Pa., native #9 Mikey Labriola (174) picked up his third major decision since 2019 began after taking a 16-5 major decision over Anthony Oliveri. Two four-point nearfalls by the Husker redshirt freshman after takedowns proved to be too much for Oliveri to handle as Labriola put his team up 18-9 with three bouts to go.

Redshirt sophomore and returning All-American #4 Taylor Venz notched his third pin in his last four duals when he got Rutgers’ 184-pounder John Ciaramella on his back and pinned him just 1:53 into the match. Venz is a perfect 6-0 since falling to N.C. State’s #3 Nick Reenan on Dec. 16.

NU’s #11 Eric Schultz continued to wrestle at a high level, taking down Matthew Correnti by major decision, 21-8. Schultz has won five of his last six duals and now has six bonus-point victories on the year.

Husker heavyweight #14 David Jensen put the nail in the Scarlet Knights coffin as he worked a 6-1 decision over Christian Colucci to push the Huskers margin of victory to 22 points at 31-9. Jensen is 12-2 (6-2 in duals) on the year.

With the win, the Huskers move to 10-3 (4-2 B1G) on the season and Rutgers drops to 8-5 (2-3 B1G). The Scarlet Knights will take on a top-20 Princeton team on Sunday afternoon to cap off their weekend.

Wisconsin bounces back with dominant win over Maryland

Badgers snap losing streak in style with big wins

COLLEGE PARK, Mary. – The Badgers returned to their winning ways on Saturday, as they rolled over the Terrapins en route to a 30-9 victory.

No. 15 Wisconsin (7-6, 2-5 B1G) won eight of 10 matches over Maryland (0-8, 0-5 B1G), including four wins by bonus points.

Senior Jens Lantz gave the Badgers the lead in his 133-pound match when he answered a shot by Orion Anderson of Maryland by countering and getting Anderson on his back to secure Lantz' first pin of the season. Wisconsin went up 6-3 and never came close to relinquishing that lead the rest of the dual.

The biggest match of the day, both literally and figuratively, was at heavyweight, as No. 11 Trent Hillger of UW faced No. 6 Youssif Hemida of Maryland. There wasn't a lot of action in the match, but Hillger earned the only takedown in the first period, and held on to win 5-2 and secure a big upset over Hemida.

Two Badgers secured the first dual wins at Wisconsin today, and both did it in style. At 157 pounds, freshman Garrett Model scored takedown after takedown to defeat Jahi Jones 16-9, narrowly missing the major decision. And at 197 pounds, Beau Breske made quick work of Maryland's Nick Cappello, just missing out on a technical fall but still earning a 16-2 major decision.

Last season, Wisconsin's Cole Martin lost by major decision to Maryland's Alfred Bannister at 149 pounds. It was a different story this time around, as Martin trailed 3-2 heading into the final seconds of the match, but managed to earn a buzzer beater takedown to win 4-3 and get revenge from last season's defeat.

Junior Tristan Moran celebrated his newly-minted top-10 ranking at 141 pounds by doing what he normally does, winning the scrambles and using his conditioning to take over late in the match. His match against Danny Bertoni of Maryland started slow, but Moran eventually worked his way to a 13-4 major decision.

The only losses on the day for Wisconsin came at 125 pounds and 174 pounds, with sophomore Ethan Rotondo losing an 8-3 decision to Brandon Cray, and sophomore Patrick Spray losing by pin to Josh Ugalde, respectively.

Next up, the Badgers return to the Field House for a ranked match-up against No. 12 Illinois on Feb. 10 at 2 p.m.

Straight from the mat
Head Coach Chris Bono

On the team's performance
"Great win for the guys today. But put the wins and losses aside, I'm proud of their effort again. They did a great job of scoring bonus points all over the place. It's always tough to win a Big Ten match on the road, and I'm glad we were able to walk out of here with a win. The guys look great heading into the final home stretch of the season."

On individual standouts
"Really happy with Trent Hillger beating a top-6 ranked guy in the country. Cole Martin beat a guy that beat him by 11 points last year. Jens Lantz getting a fall, and Beau Breske getting a big win is really good for us and we are building our momentum."

Colon, a former UNI All-American wrestler, lost to Yowlys Bonne Rodriquez of Cuba in the World Championships a year ago but defeated the Cuban yesterday on his way to his first Pan-American gold medal. Colon outscored his three opponents 29-3 in the round-robin tournament.

2019 marked the first time in the history of the Pan-American games where a single country won every weight class. The United States captured gold in all eight weight classes including six titles by tech fall.

Colon wrestled for the Panthers during the 2011-12 season and again in the 2013-14 season. Colon won the 2014 MAC Championships at 133 pounds and finished third in the NCAA Tournament as a senior. Colon finished his career with a .911 winning percentage (62-6) the highest career winning percentage all-time for a Panther.
