2020 Capital Classic Press Release

The Capital Classic Middle School Basketball Tournament, now in it’s 15th year, is the premier middle school tournament featuring Delaware’s finest 33 boy’s and girl’s teams from 13 different school districts throughout the state.

The event will be held at venues throughout the state, which will tip off at 3:30 pm, Thursday February 7th at Woodbridge Middle School in Bridgeville (formerly Woodbridge High School), Delaware and ending with the championship games at Milford Academy/High School on Saturday and Sunday February 15th and 16th.



This year’s Capital Classic currently has 7 undefeated teams playing in the event: Dover Central Middle Girls, Gunning Bedford Girls, Edison Girls, Holy Cross Girls, Milford Boys, Woodbridge Boys and Edison Boys. The tournament consists of 8 brackets having A B C and D flights for both the boys and girls.

The Capital Classic has had countless former players go on to be stars in high school and college including: Benijah Laney, Corey Crawford, Anthony Myles, Eric Laster, Juwan Gray and Anthony “Champ” Mosely. The Capital Classic is presented by Gatehouse Media Publications including The Dover Post. Governor John Carney has presented awards in the past at the tournament.

On Friday February 7th The Capital Classic commences at Woodbridge Middle School at 3:30 pm when the Gunning Bedford Girls (4-0) at the W.T. Chipman Girls (7-3) followed by the Gunning Bedford Boys (3-2) at the Spartan Boys (7-3) at 4:45 pm. The Gunning Ladies are coached Kevin McDermott by while the Boys are coached by Vann Amos. The Gunning Boys team won the Grotto’s championship last year but are in a rebuilding mode this year. Chipman A.D. Petie Davis coaches the Chipman Girls while Dion Miller will coach the Spartan Boys. At 6:00 the Postlethwait Lady Riders (7-4) Are playing the host Woodbridge Lady Blue Raiders (7-3). Postlethwait is coached by Patricia Jilek while Woodbridge is coached by Keesha Tice. At 7:15 the number 3 seeded Postlethwait Riders (9-2) coached by Duane Coverdale while James Benson will lead the undefeated and number 2 seeded Blue Raiders (11-0).

On day Monday February 10th at Woodbridge Middle there are 3 games starting at 3:30 tipping off with the Fifer Girls (2-9) at The Holy Cross Girls (3-0). Norman Pierce coaches the Lady Riders while Athletic Director Wally Seams coach the Lady Crusaders. At 4:45 The Selbyville Boys (5-6) who enter their first Capital Classic will play The Holy Cross Boys (2-1) have Dan Bieker at the helm. At 6:00 The Selbyville Girls (9-2) led by Matthew Mayette take on the undefeated Lady Senator of Dover (11-0). Dover is led by second year coach Charles Mumford, has not lost in two years, and has a 24 game win streak at press time.

Day 3 action is also at Woodbridge Middle starting at 3:30 with The Beacon Girls (8-2), coached by Stephen Re, from Cape Henlopen School District challenge the Millsboro Girls (6-5) from the Indian River School District. Jesse Long coaches Millsboro. At 4:45,coached by Greg Collins, the Gauger-Cobb Boys (3-2) visit the Beacon Boys (8-2) led by Sean O’Grady. At 6:00 the Gauger Ladies (4-2) led by Antonnikka Owens, visit the Mariner Girls (5-3) squad coached by Katie Tingle. The nightcap at 7:15 will feature the Fifer Boys (5-6) coached by John Wright visiting the Mariner Boys (7-2) led by Bryant and Terry Hazzard.

The action moves to Glasgow High School for Day 4 starting at 3:30 pm when The Providence Creek Academy Girls (2-8) coached by Dontay Black play the Kirk Ladies (2-3) led by Venessa Maxwell. At 4:45, the PCA Boys (0-8) led by Julius Williams will play the Kirk Boys (2-2) coached by Jody Russell. At 6:00, the Thomas Edison Charter School Girls (3-0) will face Shue-Medill (6-0) in a battle of the undefeated’s. Athletic Director Chris Belcher coaches Edison while Matt Owens coaches Shue. The 7:15 game will feature the Edison Boys (4-0) at Shue (5-2) serving as the home team due to proximity on the venue. Robert Brown will coach Shue while John Shelton will lead Edison.

On February 14, the last day of round one takes place at Milford Central Academy/Milford High School. At 5:00 pm, the loser of the Girls PCA/Kirk game will play the losers of the Holy Cross and Fifer game. At 6:30, the winner of the Game 5 Holy Cross/Fifer game will play the host Milford Lady Buccaneers (5-4). Leona White coaches Milford. At 8:00 pm, The Dover Central Middle Senator Boys (9-2) will challenge the undefeated and top-seeded Milford Boys (11-0). Tony Hazard will coach Milford while Dover is led by Stephen Poole who is 118-18 overall since 2009. Milford won the earlier meeting between the two powerhouses 40-30 on the first game of the season December 4 2019. Dover other loss came at the hands of Woodbridge 48-40 on January 27. Milford defeated Postlethwait 65-59 in overtime on February 3rd in an back and forth exciting thriller. The Grotto’s bracket is going to be hard fought games because of the apparent parody that exists. Milford has the slight edge as the top seed over Woodbridge because they possess 2 home games.

Capital Classic action moves on to C and D bracket championships and third place games which will happen on Saturday February 15th and the A and B brackets are on Sunday February 16th with 8 games . Games begin at 9:00 am and the last contest of the day starts at 7:30 pm. These games will feature 3rd place games for the first four games of the day and four championship games for the last four games of each day respectively. Theses contests will also take place at Milford Academy/Milford High School.

Dover Central Middle leads all schools with 12 overall bracket wins in 13 years, followed by Woodbridge with 7 and Milford and Smyrna with 6. Fifer has 5, while Postlethwait has 4 titles. Thursday February 13th at WMS and Monday February 18th President’s Day at Milford are designated snow make-up days.

The Announcers/Master of Ceremonies for the Capital Classic will be “The Voice of C.R. Rider Sports” Jay McCormick and John “Marty” Martin, Capital School Board President and education specialist. DJ N2IT Norman Royal will be playing the 1’s and 2’s in 302 throughout the Capital Classic.

628 awards will be presented including trophies, plaques and medals. Included are individual trophies for first place in each of the eight brackets and individual medals for second and third place in all eight brackets. Also, team trophies for first, second and third will be handed out. Five all-tournament players will be selected in each of the eight brackets in addition to eight MVP awards as well as selected by coaches. Crown Trophies will present 33 sportsmanship trophies to one player on each team who exemplifies sportsmanship on and off the court.

This year’s Capital Classic will be dedicated to Mike Rice, Athletic Director and Head Football Coach at Providence Creek Academy who died tragically in 2018. The Capital Classic will present ‘The Mike Rice Student Athlete Awards” to one male and one female student-athletes from Providence Creek Academy and one female and one male from the rest of the teams. The award is designated for student-athletes who displays a high level of efficiency on the court, in the classroom and in the school community. Rice was only 31 and well-loved throughout the PCA community and beyond. The 2020 recipients are Reghan Robinson from Fifer and from Providence Creek Academy Jalen Anderson and Skylar Curley and From Gauger-Cobb Kyla Reed and Mckayla Momodu.

Entry fee for the Capital Classic will be $5 for all spectators at all sites. Players, managers, school principals, administration and coaches of the Capital Classic have free admission throughout the tournament. Concession stands will be at all locations including hot dogs, nachos, candy, chips, cookies and beverages.

Idk the final scores but @CapitalGuy usually does a good job of posting the results so I’m sure he will post them when he gets the chance.
