PEMBROKE, N.C. - - The Wilmington University baseball team has been picked among the top teams in all NCAA Division II in two Preseason National Polls while senior utility man Eddie Nevins was selected as a National Collegiate Baseball Writers (NCBWA) of America First Team All-American.

Following a 40-18 2019 campaign which saw a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Championship and a berth into the NCAA East Regional Tournament, the 2020 Wildcats will start the year ranked No. 24 in the NCBWA National Poll and No. 26 in the Collegiate Baseball National Poll.

Eddie Nevins was also selected as a First Team Preseason All-American by the NCBWA, holding down the utility spot. He is the lone representative from the East Region on the First Team lineup, while Southern New Hampshire’s Jeffrey Praml is the First Team All-American relief pitcher. In all, there are four members from the East Region among the three All-American teams.

Nevins set a program record by hitting .440 last year, hitting 15 doubles with five triples and eight home runs. He knocked in 62 runners while scoring 65 more himself in his All-American campaign.

Defending NCAA Division II Champions Tampa rank atop both Preseason National Polls, earning 18 of a possible 19 first place votes on the NCBWA page. Central Missouri picked up the final first place vote, ranking fourth on the NCBWA Preseason National Poll.

The Wildcats season begins on Friday, February 21 with a doubleheader against Stonehill at the Cal Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

UBJECT: Women’s Lacrosse Opens 2020 Season with 17-5 Win over Barton

DATE: February 19, 2020
MKR

NEWARK, DEL. – A strong start for the Wilmington University women’s lacrosse team led them to a 17-5 win over Barton Wednesday morning in their season opener at the WU Athletics Complex.

The Wildcats (1-0) opened their 2020 season off on the right foot, as Barton (2-2) could not find any answers to a 6-0 lead in the first ten minutes of the contest.

It took just 4:35 into the game for junior attacker Alexis Miller to give the Wildcats their first goal of the 2020 season, thanks to Lashay Ross, before red shirt junior Delaney Steele made it a 2-0 game thanks to Ross a minute later. The Bulldogs would have their second opportunity off of a free position shot with 24:06 to play, but it would end up wide for a chance for WilmU to head the other way, creating a shot for Maris Allen from Taylor Lambeth, which would make it a 3-0 game.

WilmU would get out to a 6-0 lead with 19:26 to play in the first half, before Barton could net their first goal of the game with 16:36 to play. The Bulldogs would net just one more goal before the half, as Wilmington went on a 5-0 run, that included two goals from Lashay Ross, to help the Wildcats lead 10-2 heading into halftime.

Barton would open the second half looking to decrease the Wildcats’ lead, scoring three minutes in to make it an 11-3 game. With a turnover by the Wildcats, the Bulldogs would net their second consecutive goal for their fourth goal of the game with 25:18 to play.

Soon after, Lashay Ross would net her fourth goal of the game, before sophomore Maddie Day found the back of the net within a minutes span to put the Wildcats up 10 with 21:38 to play in regulation. Delaney Steele would dish out four straight assists to find both Ross and Day, until Taylor Lambeth dished her second assist of the game out to find Maddie Day with 10:25 to go, making it a 17-4 contest.

The Wildcats outshot the Bulldogs 22-9 in the first half, while holding them to 0-4 from free position shots in the half.

Maddie Day would lead the Wildcats with seven goals and seven points, while Lashay Ross netted five goals and dished out three assists for eight points, while also winning four draw controls. Delaney Steele would make five assists and score one goal for six points, as Maris Allen scored twice. Junior Taylor Lambeth had two assists and one goal, with Brooke Siebert winning 11 draw controls.

Wilmington will be back on the turf this Saturday when Millersville comes to the Complex. Opening draw is set for 1:00 p.m.

SUBJECT: Freshmen Lead as Men’s Lacrosse Holds Off Roberts Wesleyan, 12-11, in Season Opener

DATE: February 19, 2020

NEWARK, Del. - - Logan Stinson and Jacob Herman teamed up five times throughout the 2020 season opener, but it was the final time that knocked out Roberts Wesleyan, 12-11, as the Wilmington University men’s lacrosse team started off the year with a victory at the WU Athletics Complex.

Roberts Wesleyan (0-2) had an answer with for every Wilmington (1-0) run, scoring the final three goals in the second to tie the game, 5-5, at the half, and six straight goals spanning the third and fourth quarters to tie the game again at 11. But it was the final pairing of the Wildcat freshmen that was the difference, as Logan Stinson scored off a feed from Jacob Herman with 1:33 left which would be the game winner.

Jacob Herman got the Wildcats out to a fast start, scoring at the 13:00, 8:59, and 3:49 marks of the first quarter to give the home team a 3-1 lead after the quarter.

Stinson scored his first goal of the game to start the second quarter and again with 8:11 left in the half to give the Wildcats a 5-2 lead. But the Redhawks answered with the final three goals of the half, all within a span of 1:34 of game time, sending the game into the half deadlocked at 5-5.

The offense heated up for the Wildcats in the third quarter, scoring six straight, three on the man-advantage, to give the team an 11-5 lead with 8:43 still to play. Stinson started the scoring before Dalton Ziemba scored his first of the year. Stinson added another goal before Colyn Lyons went coast to coast to score as a defender. Keeshawn Bell had a no-look goal with 9:42 left before Jacob Herman capped the run with another spectacular goal with 8:43 to play.

The Redhawks scored the final goal of the quarter with 7:54 to play, heading into the final frame with the Wildcats up 11-6.

Roberts Wesleyan continued to push to start the fourth, scoring three goals to get to within 11-9 with 9:04 to play. The gap closed to a single goal with 7:52 to play before the Redhawks came all the way back to tie the game, 11-11, with 6:23 to play.

Each team had an extra-man opportunity with a tied game, but neither team was able to capitalize. The Redhawks had control of the ball, but freshman Keeshawn Bell forced a turnover on a clear attempt with two minutes to play, picking up the ball going on the attack. Herman then found Stinson on the far post for a one-time goal, putting the Wildcats back up, 12-11, with 1:33 to play.

Roberts Wesleyan forced a turnover and called a timeout with just over a minute to play, but a bad pass out of the timeout gave the Wildcats possession, and they were able to clear their defensive end and hang on for the final buzzer.

Stinson finished with eight points, scoring five goals with three assists. Herman finished with seven points, scoring four goals while adding three assists. Austin Wood, Noah Brock, and Noah Given led with three ground balls each while Given and Jake Mollohan had two caused turnovers each. Given made 12 saves in net for the win.

The Wildcats take to the road for their next three contests, starting with the District of Columbia on Saturday. The opening face-off is set for 12:00 p.m.

SUBJECT: Baseball Collects 18 Hits, But Can’t Hold Off Molloy in 9-8 Loss in 10 Innings

DATE: February 22, 2020
djl

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - - The Wilmington University baseball team pounded out 18 hits but couldn’t keep Molloy form coming back for a 9-8 victory in 10 innings on Saturday afternoon at the Polo Grounds at the Ripken Experience.

The Wildcats (1-2) jumped out to a 7-1 lead following the top of the fifth, but the Lions (2-1) fought back and eventually tied the game in the seventh, and once again in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings. The Lions then loaded the bases with one out, and hit a two-out single into center for the walk-off victory.

Molloy loaded the bases in the bottom of the first inning, but starter Kyle Maxwell only allowed one run, getting a ground out, a pick off, and a strikeout to limit the damage. Then the offense picked up for the Wildcats.

Dan Hyatt started his four-hit day with an RBI single down the right field line to tie the game before Brett Nowell singled into center for the 2-1 lead. Quintin Ivy added on with an RBI single to center to give the Wildcats a 3-1 lead in the second.

The third inning didn’t start until there were two outs and no one on, but Brock Nowell was hit by a pitch to keep the inning alive. Dan Hyatt then tripled over the head of the left fielder and freshman Matt Warrington followed suit with a double to left. Brett Nowell then singled through the right side and the Wildcats had a 6-1 lead.

Now leading 7-1 going into the bottom of the fifth, the Lions started to chip away. A one-out three-run homer over the short porch in right brought the Lions to within 7-4, after five. A leadoff walk in the sixth came around to score, and then a two-out, two-run homer over the short porch in left in the seventh tied the game, 7-7.

Quintin Ivy answered with the first home run of the season for the Wildcats, launching a two-out solo shot to left center to regain an 8-7 lead.

Still a one run game in the bottom of the ninth, the Lions hit their own long ball to left center, this time with one out and no one on to tie the game, 8-8, and force extra innings.

Derek Donastorg reached with two outs in the top of the 10th, but Quintin Ivy’s attempt to right was caught at the wall, keeping the game knotted at 8-8. Nick Robino recorded the first out of the bottom of the 10th, but then the Lions singled, walked, and singled to load the bases. Robino picked up a strikeout for the second out of the frame, but the Lions’ Robert Iadanza roped a pitch into center for the walk-off.

Hyatt batted 4-for-5 with a triple, two RBI, and two runs scored. Ivy finished 3-for-6 with a homer, two RBI and a run scored. Eddie Nevins and Matt Warrington each hit a double and finished with two hits while Brooks Ryan and Brett Nowell also had two hits each.

The Wildcats closed out their opening weekend of play on Sunday, as they will face-off against reigning East Region Champions NYIT at the Ripken Experience on Ebbets Field. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.

SUBJECT: No. 12 New York Tech Takes Down the Wildcats, 17-2

DATE: February 23, 2020
djl

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - - The 12th ranked New York Tech baseball team scored 16 of its 17 runs in a three-inning span, taking down Wilmington University, 17-2, on Sunday afternoon on Ebbets Field at the Ripken Experience to close out the 2020 opening weekend.

The Bears (4-0) hit four home runs and put a stamp on the game with a nine-run sixth inning. The Wildcats (1-3) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but were haunted by five errors, eight walks, and two hit batters.

The Wildcats got on the scoreboard first, putting the pressure on the Bears in the bottom of the first inning. Quintin Ivy started the inning off with a single back up the middle. Brock Nowell got a sacrifice bunt down and Ivy was standing on third with one out after a stolen base. Now with two outs, Brooks Ryan beat out a “Baltimore chop” towards second, allowing Ivy to score for the 1-0 lead.

The Bears answered with two outs in the top of the second, scoring an unearned run on an EJ Exposito single down the left field line. That would be the first of many RBI for the Bears’ number nine hitter.

After a quiet third inning, the Bears got to work. With two outs and a man on first, Exposito hit his first of two two-run homers on the day, giving the Bears a 3-1 lead. A double and a throwing error in the next two batters put the Bears ahead, 4-1 after the top of the fourth.

Now in the fifth, the Bears collected three straight hits to score the first run of the inning, and then took a 6-1 lead on a sacrifice fly. Expositio stepped up and hit his second two-run homer of the game to give the Bears an 8-1 lead. The Wildcats went 1-2-3 in their turn at the plate in the fourth and fifth innings.

A wild pitch with the bases loaded started the nine-run sixth, followed by a bases loaded hit-by-pitch and then a John LaRocca grand slam to take a 15-1 lead. Another two-run homer in the inning capped the Bears scoring, 17-1.

Cole Cromer came on and pitched two scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth, but the Wildcats were unable to get anything going at the plate.

Mitchell Leslie hit a double to left center in the ninth, and the Wildcats scored a run on a bases loaded wild pitch, but it was too little too late as a ground out ended the game.

Six different Wildcats collected one hit each, as Brooks Ryan had the lone RBI. Matt Warrington took the loss after throwing four innings with four strikeouts, allowing four runs (two earned) on three hits.

The Wildcats have the week off before returning South to start a week of baseball in the Sunshine State. The Wildcats will start the week against Seton Hill on Sunday, March 1 in Lakeland, Florida.

Baseball Drop Extra-Inning Contest to Northwestern
2/23/2020 | Baseball | Box Score
COLUMBIA - A bases-loaded walk to Charlie Maxwell in the top of the 10th gave Northwestern a 4-3, extra-inning win over the University of South Carolina baseball team Sunday afternoon (Feb. 23) at Founders Park. Northwestern took the series winning two out of three games.

Northwestern scored a run in the top of the third as Leo Kaplan scored on a wild pitch. The game remained that way until the bottom of the fifth. With two out, George Callil was hit by a pitch and Anthony Amicangelo walked. Noah Campbell then brought everyone home with a three-run blast to the Carolina bullpen, his first of the season.

The Wildcats answered with single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to tie the game at three. Stephen Hrustich homered to left in the sixth, then with one out in the seventh and runners on the corners, Shawn Goosenberg hit a fly ball to right that Andrew Eyster caught at the wall. A 9-6-3 putout at first to double off Anthony Calarco was successful, but Maxwell scored before the second out.

Northwestern started the 10th with a single and two walks. Graham Lawson then struck out the next two batters but Maxwell walked to force in the game-winning run. Carolina had runners on first and second in the ninth but a pop out ended the game.

Eyster had two hits to lead the Carolina offense, while Campbell drove in three. On the mound, Brannon Jordan struck out nine and allowed just two hits and two runs in six innings of work. Daniel Lloyd struck out three in two innings of relief while Lawson had three strikeouts in the loss.

Baseball Finishes Road Sweep at North Florida

Scarlet Knights post 37 runs in three-game series

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Feb. 23, 2020) – Rutgers baseball (3-3) completed a three-game road sweep of North Florida (2-4) with a 7-6 Sunday victory at Harmon Stadium. It was the first weekend sweep in a true road series for the Scarlet Knights since taking all three at USC Upstate in March 2017.

RU previously topped the Ospreys won by scores of 14-3 and 16-4 to finish with 37 runs, the most in a three-game set since recording that total versus Georgetown in May 2013.

“It felt great to win again today, it’s really hard to sweep and it doesn’t happen too often at any level of baseball,” head coach Steve Owens said. “It’s hard to perform better than a team for 27 innings. Our guys did a good job of being ready to play today.”

Sophomore Chris Brito highlighted the offensive attack with a 3-for-4 performance, also being hit by a pitch to reach four times. The first baseman slugged his third homer of the season and added a two-out RBI single. For the weekend, he went 8-for-12 with three walks, a hit by pitch and six RBIs to improve his slash line to .500/.593/.955 through six games.

“We’ve seen the same thing from Brito all six games,” Owens said. “He’s really improved, he’s listens well and has a chance to be an elite offensive player if he continues to keep his head and approach like it is now.”

Junior Mike Nyisztor and redshirt sophomore Tim Dezzi added two hits apiece to the 12-hit attack to make it 46 for the team in the series. Dezzi, sophomore Andy Axelson, sophomore Victor Valderrama and senior Kevin Welsh all knocked in runs, while sophomore Richie Schiekofer stole home on a first-and-third play.

On the mound, senior Tevin Murray surrendered three runs in the first inning, but settled in to post four-straight scoreless frames after that. The left-hander struck out six in the outing. Redshirt junior Kyle Muller worked two scoreless innings, leaving a runner at third each. Next in, senior Eric Reardon faced bases loaded with one out in the eighth, but induced a comebacker for a force at home and picked up a strikeout to end the threat.

Sophomore Jared Bellissimo had the ninth and worked around two unearned runs to strand the tying run at second with a strikeout.

“We are short right now on the mound, so it was important for Tevin to lock in and give us four zeros in a row,” Owens said. “That’s not Bellissimo’s usual role, but he came through to close it out.”

SCORING

  • The Scarlet Knights jumped up early with two runs in the first. Redshirt junior Danny DiGeorgio led off the game with a walk before junior Sam Owens reached on error to put two aboard. Following a popout and fielder’s choice, Brito dropped in an RBI single to right field. On the next pitch, Brito went in motion from first, with the throw going to second base and Schiekofer stealing home on the first-and-third play.
  • The Ospreys countered with three runs on four hits in their first at bat.
  • RU evened the game at three in the top of the second. Dezzi led off with a double and came around three batters later when Valderrama ripped a ball inside third base and into the left field corner for an RBI double.
  • Rutgers retook the lead with two runs in the fourth. Brito led off with a high drive over the wall in right-center for a solo homer. Next up, Dezzi worked a four-pitch walk, advanced on a wild pitch and move to third on a sacrifice bunt by Welsh. Axelson came through with an RBI single to right field that made it 5-3.
  • The game stayed at 5-3 until the Scarlet Knights tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the eighth. Nyisztor and Schiekofer both singled to start, with Brito being hit by a pitch to load the bases. Dezzi then hit an RBI single over a drawn-in infield and Welsh followed with a sacrifice fly to build a four-run lead.
  • After an RBI single plated one, UNF took advantage of an error to score two unearned runs in the last of the ninth. A stole base put the tying run on second before Bellissimo rang up a strikeout to end the game.

NOTES

  • Rutgers now leads the all-time series over North Florida, 5-2, with five consecutive victories.
  • The last RU road sweep was at USC Upstate from March 24-25, 2017.
  • The last Rutgers sweep in February came from Feb. 24-26, 2012 at Old Dominion.
  • The Scarlet Knights had double-digit hits in all three games of a weekend series for the first time since March 16-18, 2018 at No. 27 Florida Gulf Coast.
  • Rutgers became the first non-conference opponent to come in and sweep North Florida at Harmon Stadium since Hartford in Feb. 2016.

UP NEXT

Rutgers returns to Bainton Field for its home opener scheduled for Tuesday at 2 p.m. The game will broadcast on BTN Plus and WRSU 88.7-FM. The next series starts Friday at 2:10 p.m. ET against Washington State in Peoria, Ariz.
