Purdue Wrestling Goes 2-1 at Journeymen Northeast Duals
Troy, N.Y. – Led by undefeated performances from five individuals, the Purdue wrestling team posted a 2-1 mark at the Journeymen Northeast Duals at Hudson Valley Community College on Saturday. The Boilermakers rolled past Buffalo, 32-8, and Utah Valley, 30-12, before suffering a narrow 22-19 loss at the hands of No. 8 Arizona State.
No. 11 junior Devin Schroder led the effort at 125 pounds, posting two technical falls and a major decision as he outscored his three opponents by a combined 44-3. He needed only 2:37 to record an 18-0 win over Buffalo’s Kevin Meloni, topped Utah Valley’s Josiah Nava 16-1 in 2:06, and finished the day with a 10-2 major decision over 20th-ranked Brandon Courtney of Arizona State.
Ninth-ranked senior Dylan Lydy knocked off a pair of highly-ranked wrestlers at 174 pounds, following up his 12-3 major decision over Buffalo’s Jake Lanning with a 4-2 tie-breaker win over No. 12 Kimball Bastian of Utah Valley and a 3-1 decision over No. 10 Anthony Valencia, which required a buzzer-beating takedown to seal the victory.
Other unbeaten individuals Saturday were sophomore Parker Filius at 141 pounds, eighth-ranked freshman Kendall Coleman at 157 pounds and freshman Thomas Penola at 197 pounds. Penola had an especially impressive victory in the match against Buffalo, earning an 8-6 victory over Sam Schuyler, who holds a No. 10 ranking from FloWrestling and the No. 11 mark from The Open Mat.
Junior Max Lyon was 2-1 on the day with his only loss coming at the hands of top-ranked Zahid Valencia of Arizona State. Lyon rolled up a 12-2 major decision over Tanner Orndorff of Utah Valley, who is ranked No. 25 on FloWrestling and No. 17 on TrackWrestling.
“Today was the next step in our journey to March,” said head coach Tony Ersland. “We did some good things today and I was happy with the way we competed, but we just need to keep improving. It’s about trying to compete at a high level all the time, and never be satisfied with your effort.”
Purdue captured eight-of-10 matches in their win over Buffalo, took seven-of-10 against Utah Valley and split five-to-five against the Sun Devils, but surrendered bonus points in four of their five losses.
The Boilermakers return to action in a week, heading to Fargo, North Dakota for a dual at North Dakota State. The two sides will meet Sunday, Nov. 17, at 1 p.m. CT, live on FloWrestling.
