Goldey-Beacom Women’s Soccer Opens 2019 Campaign with Scoreless Draw vs. Saint Anselm

Goldey-Beacom staved off a charge from Saint Anselm and began the 2019 season with a 0-0 draw at Nancy Churchman Sawin Field in Wilmington, DE.

The Lightning exhibited solid defense in the opening half, thwarting six corner kicks from the Hawks with freshman goalkeeper Noel Talbot (Marriottsville, MD) not needed to make a save.

The second half was the period Goldey-Beacom generated more offense. Its best chance came in the 68th minute when senior Jenna Fannon (Newark, DE) was called upon for a penalty kick, but her attempt was denied by goalkeeper Payton Wildrick.

Overtime saw little offense with the Hawks getting three shots, but none found the back of the net as the Lightning recorded their first season-opening tie in program history.

Fannon closed with three shots and freshman Hanna Clarke (Earleville, MD) recorded two for the Lightning. Talbot did not face a shot on cage in her collegiate debut.

Caly Farina attempted three shots and Wildrick made three saves for Saint Anselm, which closed with an 11-5 shots edge.

Goldey-Beacom is home Saturday to host fifth-ranked Bloomsburg, starting at 3:00 pm.

Goldey-Beacom’s 2005-06 Golf Team to be Inducted into the CACC Hall of Fame

Goldey-Beacom’s historic 2005-06 Golf Team will receive yet another honor with the team being selected to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Hall of Fame.

This is the second major honor for the squad in as many years, having been inducted into the Goldey-Beacom Athletics Hall of Fame last spring. A recognition ceremony will take place during a home Goldey-Beacom athletics event during the 2019-20 academic year.

“We are honored to have the 2005-06 Golf Team inducted into the CACC Hall of Fame” Director of Athletics Dr. Thomas Brennan said. “We also are delighted that the recognition of their effort and achievement extends past the walls of GBC.”

The squad played a massive role in the history of the department, which only was in its third year as a full NCAA Division II member. The Lightning ran away with the NCAA East Regional championship, becoming the first team in school history in any sport to win an NCAA Tournament event. The last of the squad’s three victories that year saw GBC go wire-to-wire in the three-round event, winning by 24 shots.

“Not only did this group place its mark on the institution, but also on the conference,” CACC Commissioner Dan Mara said. “The 2005-06 Goldey-Beacom Golf Team is extremely deserving of induction to the CACC Hall of Fame. The team will always be remembered and will be mentioned when the history of the conference is discussed. As the first conference representative to win an NCAA postseason event, the Lightning started the CACC on the path to excellence.”

The team was highlighted by 2017 GBC Athletics Hall-of-Fame inductee, Michael Tobiason, who won the regional with an 8-over-par 221 that included a 3-under-par 68 in the final round. Tobiason, a participant in the 2011 United States Open, won five titles in 2005-06 and averaged 74.83 for the season. Tobiason was the first for Goldey-Beacom to be inducted into the CACC Hall of Fame, going in as part of the first class in the 2015-16 academic year.

Steve Cutler also was a major part of the team, sharing the CACC individual title with Tobiason at 144. He averaged 77.40 that season over a personal-best 30 rounds, eventually closing with a 78.07 career average over 83 rounds and a school-best 136th national ranking in 2006-07.

“The 2005-06 team set the bar for the success of the program,” current Golf Coach Tommy Ellison added. “It has been a long time since GBC has realized that level of success in golf. We are very excited about our 2019-20 roster and their potential to add to the legacy of the program.”

Founded in 1886, the College offers graduate and undergraduate degrees with majors in psychology, economics, criminal justice, English and all areas of business. With alumni from 26 states and 66 nations, Goldey-Beacom College is located in Pike Creek Valley, a suburb of Wilmington, Delaware. oldey-Beacom’s Jenna Fannon Picked CACC Women’s Soccer Player of the Week; Sergi Varona Tabbed to Men’s Soccer Weekly Honor Roll

It was yet another award-winning week for Goldey-Beacom, which saw senior Jenna Fannon (Newark, DE) named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Women’s Soccer Player of the Week and junior Sergi Varona (Barcelona, Spain) selected to the Men’s Soccer Weekly Honor Roll.

Fannon continued her stunning play with four goals and two assists for 10 points over two games. She had two goals and an assist Thursday in Goldey-Beacom’s 5-1 victory against Holy Family and produced the same line Saturday in her squad’s 5-0 triumph at Concordia (NY). Fannon is on a nine-game points streak, during which she has a goal in eight of those matches.

Fannon has put forth a run that truly is to be appreciated. One of the area’s most gifted student-athletes, she is third in the nation with 1.25 goals per game, fifth with 2.83 points per match, tied for fourth in team annals with 29 career goals and sixth outright with 69 points. Her 15 goals this season ties her with Alex Smith (2011) and Renee Brechter (2002) for the most in GBC history and her 34 points has her third.

Goldey-Beacom (7-3-2, 6-1-1 CACC) has clinched a sixth straight trip to the CACC Tournament, the longest such run in program history, and is tied for third place in the conference.

Varona scored both goals in Goldey-Beacom’s 2-1 victory Saturday at Concordia (NY). Varona converted a Lightning corner kick in the 58th minute and then scored off a cross in the 66th minute for his squad’s eighth victory in the last nine outings.

The men’s soccer squad also is on an impressive spurt that included a seven-game winning streak for the team’s longest such run in 16 years. Goldey-Beacom (10-4, 7-1) is in first place in the conference and appears on its way to a fourth CACC Tournament trip in the last five seasons, which includes the 2017 conference title.

Both teams are in action during the week at Jefferson. The men’s team plays Tuesday in East Falls and the women go on Wednesday.

Goldey-Beacom College Athletics Excels in the NCAA Academic Success Rate

The recently released Academic Success Rate by the NCAA once again shows the outstanding achievement of Goldey-Beacom College’s student-athletes and how they compare both against national schools and fellow-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference institutions.

The ASR is the percentage of student-athletes who graduate within six years of initial enrollment in college and includes virtually all Division II student-athletes, including transfers and those not receiving athletics scholarships.

The Division II ASR also captures about 50 percent more college athletes than the federal graduation rate. Unlike the federal graduation rate, the ASR also counts student-athletes who transfer to a school after initial enrollment elsewhere, removing from the rate academically eligible student-athletes who leave school. The national ASR is 73 percent for student-athletes who entered college from 2009 through 2012.

Of that group, Goldey-Beacom ranks 45th in the nation out of 308 active Division II members with 88 percent. The CACC saw five of its institutions place in the top 45.

The Lightning also represent five of the 41 athletics programs in the conference who earned ASR scores of 100 percent with that list including baseball, softball, men’s golf, women’s tennis and women’s cross country/track & field. The five programs are tied for second most among the 14 teams in the CACC.

“It’s been a long-held and documented understanding that college athletes typically persist and graduate at a high rate, often higher than the same rates in a college’s general student body,” Goldey-Beacom President Dr. Colleen Perry Keith said. “The positive effects of participating in college athletics lead to this: athletes often learn better time management and better coping strategies because of the demands on their time, and expectations for academic performance in order to stay eligible to compete in their sport. Goldey-Beacom’s rates bear this out.”

“The Athletics Department is so proud of this great accomplishment,” Senior Woman Administrator/Assistant AD/Women’s Basketball Coach Bethann Burke said. “It is truly a testament to the hard work of our student-athletes and the great recruiting by our coaches.”

Outside of this analysis, Goldey-Beacom already had proven its mettle in the classroom. The College in 2018-19 produced 50 student-athletes who made the CACC Academic Honor Roll, a second team Google Cloud CoSIDA Academic All-America in women’s soccer graduate Cliona Crammond (Wicklow, Ireland) and five picked Google Cloud CoSIDA Academic All-District.

GBC also saw men’s basketball graduate Corey Taite (Sayreville, NJ) earn an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, for which the NCAA only awards 126 per academic year combined among all three divisions.

Goldey-Beacom in its history has produced six Academic All-Americans, all within the last five years, and 16 Academic All-District honorees over the last 10 years.

Goldey-Beacom last year saw its student-athletes record a 3.14 GPA, higher than the overall average of the college. The college also had four of its teams win an inaugural CACC Team Academic Award for having the highest team GPA in the league, tying for the most in the conference. This included women's tennis (3.61), women's soccer (3.58), women's volleyball (3.47) and men's soccer (3.26).

Founded in 1886, the College offers graduate and undergraduate degrees with majors in psychology, economics, criminal justice, English and all areas of business. With alumni from 13 states and 60 nations, Goldey-Beacom College is located in Pike Creek Valley, a suburb of Wilmington, Delaware. Goldey-Beacom Women’s Tennis Upends University of the Sciences, 4-1, in the CACC Semifinals

Goldey-Beacom’s experience in addition to relying on some key young players helped pave the way in the squad’s tense but exciting 4-1 victory over University of the Sciences at the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference semifinals in Middlebury, CT.

Second-seeded GBC (9-1) is headed back to the conference final and will face top-seeded Concordia (NY) on Saturday at noon for an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. Goldey-Beacom won the CACC crown in both 2016 and 2017, and has played in the NCAA Tournament eight times.

GBC last season competed in the “Sweet 16” of the NCAA Tournament, the furthest any team in the College’s history has gone in this tournament. This season marks the 12th straight year the Lightning have played in the CACC Tournament with all resulting in at least a berth in the semifinals.

Goldey-Beacom made quick work of the doubles point to grab a 1-0 lead. Sophomores Maria Bruno (Maracay, Venezuela) and Imane Van Veen (Paris, France) got a 6-2 triumph over Karla Miletic and Myka Williams at first doubles before senior Silvia Hortelano Pey (Castelldefels, Spain) and sophomore Kristin Radeke (Bremen, Germany) recorded a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles over Danielle Paran and Diana Sosonkin.

It is the eighth time this season the Lightning have captured the doubles point.

Van Veen, named first team All-CACC, kept her incredible play going by winning 6-1, 6-2 at second singles over Williams. It was her ninth consecutive singles triumph, all in straight sets, and moved her to 10-2 in singles.

Miletic won at first singles to bring the Devils (8-7) within 2-1, but the Lightning had an answer. Freshman Sara Edebo (Gothenburg, Sweden), tabbed first team all-conference, rallied from a set down at fourth singles for a strong 3-6. 6-0, 6-3 victory over Sosonkin.

Goldey-Beacom finally nailed down the match at sixth singles with senior Anna Hortelano Pey (Castelldefels, Spain) gutting out a 0-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory over Paran. This gave the Lightning their fourth trip to the CACC final in the last six years and seventh overall.

The second Wildcats’ goal also came via a corner kick, this time from the left side in the 32nd minute. After the initial effort was denied in front, Lorne Bickley buried the rebound for his 23rd goal of the season and a 2-0 margin.

Abdul Mansasray made it 3-0 on a short-angle shot in the 68th minute.

Freshman Troy Fitzgerald (Bear, DE) made three saves for the Lightning (11-6, 8-3 CACC), who remain in second place in the CACC.

Bickley recorded five shots and Gabriel Prgomet amassed two saves for the Wildcats (15-1-1, 9-1-1).

Goldey-Beacom Women’s Soccer Rolls Another Shutout, 3-0 Over Post

Goldey-Beacom received more offensive contributions from its statistical leaders and recorded its sixth shutout of the season with a 3-0 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference triumph over Post at Nancy Churchman Sawin Field in Wilmington, DE.

The Lightning controlled play in the first half with a 7-2 shots edge, but were finally looking to crack the scoreboard. Senior Jenna Fannon (Newark, DE) took care of that in the 26th minute, receiving a long pass from junior Line Kristoffersen (Bergen, Norway) that was followed by a dribble and a shot inside the left post.

Fannon just 2:16 into the second half again found the back of the net, extending her own single-season school records to 23 goals and 53 points. She took a pass from sophomore Melayna Immediato (Hockessin, DE), faked out the goalkeeper and put it home for a 2-0 margin.

Immediato then made it 3-0 in the 52nd minute with her fifth goal of the campaign. She got a pass near the goal line from Kristoffersen and put in a five-yard shot.

Kristoffersen now stands at 53 career points, good for ninth in team annals.

Immediato had eight shots and freshman Noel Talbot (Marriottsville, MD) made two saves for the Lightning, who had a 22-9 shots edge. Hailey McGee and Sabrina Adamo notched two shots apiece with Tayleur Little getting four saves over 54 minutes for the Eagles (6-7-3, 5-5-1 CACC).

Goldey-Beacom (10-5-2, 8-3-1 CACC) is in third place in the league and has concluded its conference regular-season schedule. Several teams still have games in hand, so the Lightning’s seed in the conference tournament will not be known until next week.

The Lightning also have recorded double figures in wins four straight years, extending their own school record.

Goldey-Beacom next Thursday plays its regular-season finale against Mercy. Please note that game is a 2:00 pm start.

Goldey-Beacom Men’s Soccer Dealt Tough 1-0 Loss by Post

Goldey-Beacom gave up a late goal to Post and was handed a tough 1-0 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference setback at Nancy Churchman Sawin Field in Wilmington, DE.

A tense contest that featured plenty of defense in the first half saw a 0-0 halftime score. The Lightning only had a 3-2 shots edge and possessed the only shot on goal.

Opportunities were few after intermission, but the Eagles found the elusive goal in the 74th minute. Phillimon Bedard-Khaid had a ball on the left side and launched a perfect cross for Alvaro Sanchez, who headed it in for his 11th tally of the season.

The Lightning did their best to generate offense, but the Eagles clamped down on the defense and held on in a contest that featured just three shots on cage.

Sergio Diaz had three shots and Jordan Brown closed with two saves for Post (10-3-3, 7-2-2 CACC).

Goldey-Beacom (11-7, 8-4) remains in second place in the CACC, but many teams below it still have games in hand. The squad will not know its seed in the conference tournament until next week.

GBC before the match took time to honor seniors Steve Golding (Gosport, England), Jamie McAvoy (Ayr, Scotland), Levi Maruca (Downingtown, PA) and Nicolas Jaramillo (Cali, Colombia) for their contributions to the program.

Goldey-Beacom is back in action Monday, November 11 in the CACC Tournament quarterfinals. Please check GBCAthletics.com next week for more information.

Goldey-Beacom Men’s Soccer Loses Heartbreaker to Georgian Court on Penalty Kicks in CACC Quarterfinals

Goldey-Beacom suffered what many consider the cruelest way to drop a soccer game, falling in penalty kicks to Georgian Court after the teams played to a 4-4 stalemate through 110 minutes in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament quarterfinals in Wilmington, DE.

The Lions prevailed after 10 agonizing and enthralling penalty kicks for each, 6-5, and will face top-seeded Wilmington (DE) in the semifinals Friday at 11:00 am in Waterbury, CT.

Goldey-Beacom held a 3-1 lead through 55 minutes on goals from Eduardo Coimbra (Curitiba, Brazil), fellow sophomore Josh Moody (Townsend, DE) and senior Jamie McAvoy (Ayr, Scotland) to gain control. Louis Silva had the Georgian Court marker in that span.

The Lions were more than alive when Niklas Laenger tallied in the 68th minute for a 3-2 game and then leveled it in the 76th minute on Javel Dawkins’ penalty kick.

Goldey-Beacom then looked like it had the game locked when junior Sergi Varona (Barcelona, Spain), just named second team All-CACC, buried a 10-yard shot for a 4-3 lead. But Dawkins scored less than a minute later on a deflected shot and the match again was level.

The shootout would not have been possible if not for the great play of Lightning goalkeeper junior Cole Lewis (Middletown, DE), who made six saves overall that included three in extra time. Lewis made two stops in the second 10 minutes, including a shot from Silva with just over a minute left.

Then came penalty kicks with each team taking five until a winner was declared. It was scoreless until the fourth kick, when Tommaso Rio scored for the Lions and Coimbra tallied for the Lightning.

After each team missed its fifth kick, it was on to sudden death. Each team would get an attempt until one had the lead after equal kicks. Both squads made kicks six through nine, Francisco Corral scored on Georgian Court’s 10th kick, but sophomore Elijah Howe (Canberra, Australia) was denied by goalkeeper Jamie Hickey on Goldey-Beacom’s 10th attempt to end the match.

This is believed to be the first penalty-kick shootout in Goldey-Beacom history as no records say otherwise.

Lewis had six saves for the Lightning and Hickey ended with three saves for the Lions. Senior Levi Maruca (Downingtown, PA) attempted three shots for Goldey-Beacom and Dawkins had seven for Georgian Court.

In addition to Varona, Coimbra and junior Ethan Maguire (Sydney, Australia) today were named second team all-conference.

ey-Beacom Men’s Basketball Comeback Falls Short in 84-82 Loss to Franklin Pierce

Goldey-Beacom almost made a great comeback from down 21 points, but was handed a tough 84-82 loss by Franklin Pierce at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

The Lightning found themselves in a 52-31 hole with 18:37 left before embarking on a furious comeback. The home side before an energetic crowd during the College’s Legacy Weekend went on a 36-19 run, moving to 71-67 with 5:26 left.

Freshman Jesiah West (Elizabeth, NJ) netted 12 points in that time for Goldey-Beacom, which shot 13-of-22 from the floor and coerced Franklin Pierce into nine turnovers.

The Ravens built the lead to 80-71 with 3:05 to play, but again the Lightning did not pack it in. GBC went on an 8-2 run in just over a minute to move to 82-79 with 1:52 left, thanks to six points from junior Marcellus Livingston (Linden, NJ).

Following Doyin Fodojutimi’s missed jumper for Franklin Pierce, Livingston looked for the tie but his 3-pointer was off. Junior Tyler Jones (Lawrenceville, NJ) got the rebound for the Lightning, but missed a layup and Falu Seck got the rebound for the visitors.

Seck missed a 3-pointer and the Lightning had yet another chance. West went for the quick points and his layup with 25 seconds remaining got his side within 82-81.

Sean Bresnan made one free throw for the Ravens with 20 seconds left and freshman Nazim Derry (Atlantic City, NJ) followed suit for the Lightning with 4.7 seconds remaining for an 83-82 contest. After Derry’s miss, Sam van Oostrum hauled in a massive rebound for the Ravens with 2.7 seconds left.

Van Oostrum missed his first free throw and made his second for an 84-82 game. He then stole the inbounds pass, but his toss into the air to kill the clock hit the ceiling with 0.4 seconds left and gave GBC back the ball. But the Lightning’s chance for their first lead was not to be as a desperation toss from junior Tevin Service (Union, NJ) was off the mark as time expired.

West poured in 23 points on 9-of-11 shooting with six rebounds, Livingston scored 19 points and Derry added 12 for the Lightning (0-4), who shot 56 percent (19-of-34) from the field in the second half and 49 percent (31-of-63) overall.

Fodojutimi scored 22 points on 8-of-16 shooting with seven rebounds, Seck netted 20, Isaiah Moore poured in 15 and Sean Fasoyiro added 10 and five rebounds for the Ravens (2-1).

Legacy Weekend welcomed back many of the College’s proud alums and was tied into an open house, which welcomed many accepted students to the Pike Creek campus.

Goldey-Beacom on Wednesday is at West Chester for a 7:00 pm contest.

GBC looked like it was in great shape with 3:47 left when sophomore Sarah Round (Northampton, England) drilled a huge 3-pointer to give her side a 68-61 lead. But Wilmington chipped away, moving to 68-63 with 2:22 remaining on Kiara Eubanks’ jumper and then got to a three-point game with 1:52 to go on Kasha Andrews’ layup.

The Lightning called timeout to regroup and senior Amanda McGrogan (Mount Laurel, NJ), as she always does, came through. She came out of the break with the ball and drove in for a layup with 1:36 remaining for a 70-65 game.

Eubanks hit a jumper to get the Wildcats to 70-67 with 1:21 remaining and, following a Lightning miss, canned a jumper with 42 seconds to go for a one-point contest.

Another Goldey-Beacom miss then put the ball in Wilmington’s hands in the frontcourt with eight seconds left. The Wildcats worked the ball in the post and it was Sabreen Muslin who was fouled in the paint with 4.1 seconds remaining.

With the crowd in anticipation, Muslin misfired on both free throws. But the second deflected out of bounds off the Lightning (1-9, 1-2 CACC) and the Wildcats (0-10, 0-3) had had another chance with 2.1 seconds left.

However, Goldey-Beacom’s defense came through. Round and freshman Janiya Stevens (Ellendale, DE) showed relentless play in both moving to Muslim, who took the inbounds pass from under the basket and saw her short jumper miss at the buzzer.

McGrogan closed with 25 points to match her season high on 8-of-16 shooting, eight rebounds, five assists and went 8-for-10 from the line. Round netted 14 points, senior Jill Latanowich (Newton, MA) scored 10 with sophomore Alexis Harrison (Millville, NJ) getting seven and eight rebounds for the Lightning.

Eubanks played great with 23 points on 10-of-15 shooting, Andrews had 15 and seven rebounds with Jadyn Whitsett pouring in 10 points for the Wildcats.

Goldey-Beacom returns to action Thursday, January 2 at New Haven, beginning at 5:30 pm.

Goldey-Beacom Men’s Basketball Battles to 91-83 Triumph Over Wilmington (DE)

Goldey-Beacom was given a huge test from local-rival Wilmington in a great battle of two solid programs, one that saw the former use a massive run bridging both halves for a 91-83 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference win at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

The Lightning were in a 36-29 hole with 3:45 to go in the first half after being up double figures earlier in the contest. Freshman Jesiah West (Elizabeth, NJ) scored nine points in that time and junior Kyle Elliot (Rahway, NJ) netted eight for GBC, which shot 7-of-16 from the floor and induced seven turnovers.

Wilmington did get a 9-3 run in just under two minutes to close to 82-76 with 3:29 left, thanks to Taalib Holloman’s five points. But freshman Nazim Derry (Atlantic City, NJ) made one free throw for GBC with 3:05 to play and, after over a minute without a score, Elliot nailed a free throw with 1:40 remaining for an 84-76 contest.

West recorded season highs of 28 points on 8-of-13 shooting and 17 rebounds for his second double-double. He also recorded five blocks and now has 32, tied for the eighth-best single-season mark in team history.

Elliot netted 24 points on 8-of-15 shooting with Derry and junior Marcellus Livingston (Linden, NJ) pouring in 12 apiece for the Lightning (6-6, 3-0 CACC), who shot 52 percent (15-of-29) from the floor in the second half and 50 percent (28-of-56) overall.

Holloman netted 17 points, Jordan Harding scored 16, Jermaine Head poured in 15, Danny Walsh netted 14 with Qadir Burgess adding 13 for the Wildcats (2-9, 0-3), who shot 44 percent (26-of-59) from the floor but committed 20 turnovers.
