Goldey-Beacom Volleyball Opens 2017 With a Split at Ramfest


Goldey-Beacom opened its campaign with a 3-0 victory (25-22, 25-18, 25-15) over Salem International at Ramfest in West Chester, PA before a 3-1 setback (24-26, 25-22, 18-25, 16-25) to Millersville.


GBC in the second and third sets against Salem International went on a tear, combining for 20 kills and just eight errors. SIU during that stretch was forced into 15 errors and a -.031 hitting percentage.


Freshman Breanne Haley (Elkton, MD/Rising Sun) blossomed in her collegiate debut, closing with 15 kills, five digs and an impressive .379 hitting percentage. Sydney Fulton (Wilmington, DE/Delaware Military Academy) totaled 11 assists and five digs, fellow freshman Morgan Andrews (Wilmington, DE/Delaware Military Academy) recorded nine digs with sophomore Makinsie Balderson (Fairfax, VA) getting six kills and six digs.


Rachel Hess had seven kills and 11 digs with Cassidy Pluta notching 12 digs for Salem International (0-1).


The Lightning (1-1) in its second match played the Marauders level at 14 kills apiece in the second set to forge a 1-1 tie. But Millersville recorded 17 kills in each of the last two sets to end the match with a 67-42 advantage.


Haley continued her role with 16 kills and 16 digs for her first collegiate double-double. Fulton recorded 23 assists, Andrews totaled 16 digs, Balderson had 12 and junior Olivia Florence (Glen Allen, VA) ended with 12 assists.


Erin Harman had 24 kills and 13 digs, Lindsey Blevins pounded 17 kills and Kelsi Ceriani added 12 for Millersville (2-0).


Goldey-Beacom is back in action Saturday against Franklin Pierce at noon and host West Chester after 2:00 pm.

Goldey-Beacom Volleyball Drops a Pair at Ramfest


Goldey-Beacom today played tough in both of its matches, but was handed a 3-1 loss (25-19, 10-25, 22-25, 22-25) by Franklin Pierce and a 3-0 setback (13-25, 13-25, 17-25) by West Chester in West Chester, PA.


GBC in its match with Franklin Pierce rolled in the first set with a 14-2 kills edge to go with a .312 hitting percentage. The Ravens then took the next three sets despite the Lightning ending with a 44-29 kills advantage that included 15-6 in the third set.


Freshman Breanne Haley (Elkton, MD/Rising Sun) continued her impressive start with 21 kills, 19 digs and a .288 hitting percentage for the Lightning. Morgan Andrews (Wilmington, DE/Delaware Military Academy) had 15 digs with fellow freshman Sydney Fulton (Wilmington, DE/Delaware Military Academy) amassing 12.


Danielle Varricchio totaled 12 kills and 14 digs with Hannah Runge getting 15 digs and 11 assists for Franklin Pierce (2-1).


West Chester was simply too much, recording a 37-22 kills advantage with a .259 hitting percentage. The Lightning did hang tough in the third set by forging a 13-13 tie, but the Rams scored the next five points to seize control.


Haley totaled 11 kills and 16 digs, Andrews had 19 digs and Fulton recorded 13 assists for the Lightning (1-3).


Karleigh Lutz had 13 kills, Nicki Yates notched 14 digs, Alex Gleason added 10 and Jillian Grammer recorded 27 assists for the Golden Rams (4-0).


Goldey-Beacom is off until September 12, when it visits East Stroudsburg for a 7:00 pm match.

NEWARK, Del. - - In opening day action at the Wildcat Invitational, the Wilmington University volleyball team split a pair of matches on their home court, taking the win in the first match against Merrimack, 3-1, before losing the nightcap to American International, 3-0, on Friday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.

Set scores for the match against Merrimack were 20-25, 25-14, 25-20, and 25-18.

Set scores for the match against AIC were 25-19, 25-20, and 25-20.

The Wildcats (2-4) got off to a slow start in their first set against the Warriors, committing some untimely errors throughout the set. They bounced back in sets two, three, and four with timely blocking. They out-blocked their opponent, 9-2, in the opening match, including 14 block assists and two solo blocks. The Wildcats kept their attack errors to a minimum by only committing 16 for the match after finishing the first set with eight. The ‘Cats tallied a kill percentage of .174 while holding the Warriors to a .057 attack percentage for the match.

Leading the way for the ‘Cats was junior outside hitter Brittany Ford with nine kills and seven digs while sophomore teammate middle hitter Rebecca Rawlinson had eight kills and four total blocks. Senior libero Jenna Brown had a team high 21 digs to lead the way defensively while freshman Mandy Behiels added 16 digs.

In the nightcap, AIC outhit the Wildcats, .232 to .168, putting down 10 aces in order to take the match in straight sets. Ford again led the Wildcats on the offensive side of the ball, totaling 8 kills to go along with seven digs. Sophomore Jill Braunsberg led the team in digs with 20 while adding 10 assists for the double-double. Junior Miranda Shaw added a team high 16 assists while Rawlinson added six kills on 13 swings, finishing with a .385 attack percentage.

The Wildcats collected nine total blocks in the loss, including 16 block assists at the net. Emma Kongevold held the net for six block assists while Eile Harris chipped in with five block assists and one solo block. Rawlinson added three block assists while Braunsberg completed the task with two block assists.

The Wildcats will be right back in action on Saturday morning for two more games on the final day of the 2017 Wildcat Invitational as they take on Adelphi at 10:00 a.m. and Franklin Pierce at 4:00 p.m.
 
Goldey-Beacom's volleyball team opened Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play with a 3-1 win (25-16, 19-25, 25-18, 27-25) at Chestnut Hill in Philadelphia. Breanne Haley had 24 kills and 15 digs, Morgan Andrews notched 29 digs with Sydney Fulton getting 46 assists for the Lightning (2-4, 1-0 CACC).
 
Goldey-Beacom Women’s Volleyball Falls, 3-0, to Shepherd


Goldey-Beacom faced a major challenge against Shepherd in the opener of the Kutztown Classic and was handed a 3-0 setback (20-25, 20-25, 11-25) in Kutztown, PA.


The Lightning entered the match with just nine healthy players and could not contain the Rams, who won their third straight. Shepherd held a slim 26-25 kills edge, but recorded 10 blocks.


Freshman Breanne Haley (Elkton, MD) continued to be a focal point for GBC, ending with nine kills and 12 digs. Sydney Fulton (Wilmington, DE/Delaware Military Academy) notched 22 assists, fellow freshman Morgan Andrews (Wilmington, DE/Delaware Military Academy) had 11 digs and senior Jax Babezki (Warrington, PA) amassed five kills for the Lightning (2-5).


Cambriea Hill had eight kills, Jessica Karcz recorded 18 assists, Imani Major notched 17 digs and Seone Goode added 10 for the Rams (7-1).


Goldey-Beacom on Saturday play host Kutztown at 9:00 am and West Chester at 3:30 pm.

Goldey-Beacom Women’s Volleyball Falls Twice at Kutztown Classic


Goldey-Beacom had a tough go of it at the Kutztown Classic as it fell 3-1 (25-21, 10-25, 20-25, 22-25) to Kutztown and 3-0 (18-25, 17-25, 20-25) to West Chester in Kutztown, PA.


Goldey-Beacom in the first set against Kutztown pounded 10 kills and at one point led on the scoreboard, 16-9. But Kuztown in the second owned a 12-6 kills edge and then won two closely contested sets to close the match.


Freshman Breanne Haley (Elkton, MD) had 13 kills and 14 digs for her sixth double-double of the season. Sydney Fulton (Wilmington, DE/Delaware Military Academy) notched 27 assists and nine digs, fellow freshman Morgan Andrews (Wilmington, DE/Delaware Military Academy) had 14 digs and junior Megann Santiago (Levittown, NY) added 10 for the Lightning.


Brittney Moyer pounded 13 kills, Madisyn Kleinfelter notched 27 assists and Sydney Wilson had 25 digs for the Bears (5-6).


West Chester in the second match recorded a 41-25 kills advantage with 15 kills in each of the first two sets, ending with a .218 overall hitting percentage.


Haley closed with seven kills and 10 digs, Fulton recorded 20 assists and sophomore Makinsie Balderson (Fairfax, VA) had six kills for the Lightning (2-7).


Abbie Dischert and Amy Kovacs notched 10 kills apiece, Jillian Grammer dished 29 assists and Nicki Yates amassed 18 digs for the Golden Rams (10-1).


Goldey-Beacom on Tuesday visits Holy Family for a 7:00 pm match.

Breanne Haley’s Big Day Leads Goldey-Beacom Volleyball to 3-1 Victory Over Felician


Freshman Breanne Haley (Elkton, MD) had yet another huge match with 25 kills and 15 digs, helping Goldey-Beacom to a 3-1 (25-14, 16-25, 25-20, 25-18) Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference win over Felician at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.


The Lightning in their home opener rolled to a 17-6 kills edge in the first set with a stunning .556 hitting percentage. The final two sets witnessed the home side record a 27-15 kills advantage, finishing with a 57-34 lead and a .246 hitting percentage.


Haley, the reigning CACC Rookie of the Week, notched her eighth double-double of her brief career and posted a season-best in kills. She also notched a .345 hitting percentage, just shy of her .367 from September 1 against Salem International in her collegiate debut.


Junior Olivia Florence (Glen Allen, VA) dished 35 assists, sophomore Makinsie Balderson (Fairfax, VA) had 12, senior Jax Babezki (Warrington, PA) pounded 10 kills and junior Megann Santiago (Levittown, NY) added 12 digs for the Lightning (3-9, 2-2 CACC), who have taken seven of their last 10 meetings with the Golden Falcons (1-8, 0-4).


Paulina Calero notched 10 kills, Charlotte Greek had 22 assists and Lauren Mack amassed 14 digs for Felician.


Goldey-Beacom on Wednesday makes the short trip to Newark to face Wilmington at 7:00 pm.
