SUBJECT: Second Half Charge Falls In Final Minute as Mercy Secures 83-79 Nonconference victory over Women’s Basketball

DATE: November 20, 2019
djl

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. - - Down 12 at the halftime break, the Wilmington University women’s basketball team’s quest for their first win fell just short, as Mercy pulled out an 83-79 victory on its home court on Wednesday night.

The Wildcats (0-5) fought all the way back to eventually tie the contest with a Kasha Andrews three-pointer, 79-79, but Mercy was able to draw a foul and calmly hit a pair of free throws with 25 seconds left. The Wildcats were unable to answer out of a timeout, resulting in a turnover and another pair from the foul line for the Mavericks for the four-point win.

Kiara Eubanks gave the Wildcats their first lead of the game, 13-12, in the first quarter, before Jadyn Whitsitt put the away team up 15-14 with a pair from the line before Mercy took control of the first half. They finished the first quarter on an 8-0 run to lead 22-15.

The run continued into the second quarter with a free throw before Tiffany Jackson snapped the streak with a layup, 23-17, with 9:37 to play in the second. Kasha Andrews hit a three-pointer to cut the deficit to 32-29, but a quick 9-2 Maverick spurt opened up their first 10-point lead of the game, 41-31. The Mavericks then scored four of the final five points of the half to go into the lockerroom leading 47-35.

The Wildcats came out with fire in their game in the third quarter, opening the half on a 12-2 run to get within 49-47 with 5:42 to play. The run subsided though, as they could only get to within two points in the quarter. A 9-2 Mercy run opened the lead back up to 63-54, but Mikala Casimir ended the third quarter with a layup, taking the Wildcats into the fourth only down 63-56.

Wilmington found itself down eight in the quarter, but two layups and a free throw had the Wildcats to within 70-67. Jadyn Whitsitt hit a three to get back to 72-70 before the Mavericks pulled it back out to 76-70 with 3:04 to play.

Still down four, Tiffany Jackson laid one home and then Kasha Andrews answered a Mercy free throw with a three-pointer to tie the game, 79-79 with 36 seconds left. But the comeback train ran out of steam on the Wildcats down the stretch.

Tiffany Jackson ended with a double-double for the Wildcats, scoring 21 points while adding 12 rebounds. Jadyn Whitsitt led all scorers with 25 points, shooting 7-of-11 from the floor and 7-of-9 from the foul line. She also added eight rebounds in the game. Kasha Andrews finished with 13 points.

The Wildcats shot 44.6 percent from the floor and out rebounded the Mavericks, 45-36, but only shot 13-of-24 form the foul line in the loss.

The Wildcats stay in the ECC but return home for their next contest, as they host Daemen in a nonconference contest at the WU Athletics Complex on Saturday. The opening tip is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

Senior Amanda McGrogan (Mount Laurel, NJ) became the 10th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points for Goldey-Beacom, which was handed a 74-69 loss at Southern New Hampshire in Manchester, NH.

McGrogan has been a solid scorer, competitor and teammate during her almost four seasons here and reaching quadruple digits was inevitable. A second team All-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference pick and CACC All-Tournament selection from a season ago, McGrogan got the historic milestone on a layup in the opening minute of the second half after beginning the contest with 14 first-half points.

McGrogan overall poured in a game-high 25 points, which also is a season high, and now stands at 1,010 career. McGrogan also shot 11-of-20 from the floor and now has 346 career field goals, moving her into the program’s top 10 list.

The Lightning played competitively the entire way and were within 60-59 with 6:49 to go on a 3-pointer from sophomore Sarah Round (Northampton, England).

But the Penmen scored the next eight points in roughly 2 1/2 minutes to gain a 68-59 cushion with 3:42 remaining. Molly Terry and Sarah Deyo netted three points apiece.

Round scored 16 points with senior Jill Latanowich (Newton, MA) adding 10 and seven rebounds for the Lightning (0-7), who shot 47 percent (30-of-64) from the field.

Terry netted 17 points, Ariana Koivisto scored 15, Jenna Roche poured in 12 with Deyo adding a game-high 14 rebounds for the Penmen (8-3), who were limited to just 37 percent (25-of-67) shooting and were forced into 17 turnovers.

Goldey-Beacom on Sunday remains in New England to face Saint Anselm. Game time in Manchester, NH is after 2:00 pm.

Goldey-Beacom Men’s Basketball’s Four-Game Winning Streak Snapped with 78-58 Loss to Southern New Hampshire

Goldey-Beacom got back into the contest with an early second-half run, but saw its four-game winning streak snapped with a 78-58 loss to Southern New Hampshire at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

The Penmen exploded in the first half to a 43-24 lead by shooting 53 percent (16-of-30) from the floor and holding the Lightning to just 35 percent (9-of-26). Shawn Montague netted 12 points in that span with Eamonn Joyce adding nine over just 12 minutes.

Goldey-Beacom then found its groove early in the second half, using a 19-5 run in just over six minutes to close to 53-45 with 11 minutes remaining. Junior J’von Winslow (Allentown, PA) scored eight points in that time for the Lightning, who shot 8-of-11 from the field and forced the Penmen into four turnovers.

However, SNHU pulled away with a 15-4 run in just over six minutes to gain a 68-49 cushion with 4:38 to play. Justyn Lacy played great in place of an injured Joyce, netting five points in that span to help his unit shoot 5-of-7 from the field.

SUBJECT: Women’s Basketball Falls in Heartbreaker to Georgian Court, 78-77, on Final Shot

DATE: January 8, 2020
MKR

NEWARK, Del. – It came down to the final three seconds of the game as an offensive rebound found Georgian Court University and they would hit the game winning shot to defeat the Wilmington University women’s basketball team, 78-77, Wednesday night in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference matchup at the WU Athletics Complex.

It would come down to the wire, as Wilmington (1-12, 1-4 CACC) had a one point lead with 14 seconds left in regulation, but the Lions (4-8, 2-3 CACC) would find a way to get an offensive rebound, finding Jada Atchison in the middle of the paint for the game-winning bucket with 3.4 seconds left in regulation.

Georgian Court would leak out to as large as an 11-point lead in the first quarter, before back-to-back threes by the Wildcats would bring the deficit to seven, but the Lions would end the quarter with a nine point lead.

The Lions would jump out to their largest lead of the game of 12 with 7:42 to play in the second, but Wilmington would go on a 12-2 run within the next four minutes to cut the deficit to two. Tiffany Jackson would cut it to within one in the final 28 seconds, but Georgian Court would get one more shot up before the buzzer to take a 41-38 lead into halftime.

Georgian Court would start the second half on a 13-6 run before the Wildcats could stop the bleeding and get within three thanks to LaShyra Williams who would make it a 56-53 game with 2:08 to play.

Kiara Eubanks would hit three of her five made free throws in the final quarter with only 8:43 to play to make it a 61-60 ballgame. Eubanks would then tie the contest up at 65-65 with 7:28 to play, before giving the Wildcats their first lead of the game since 6:13 left in the first quarter on a made layup.

Kiara Eubanks would give the Wildcats a five-point lead thanks to an and-one with 3:39 left to make it a 75-70 game. With 1:36 left in regulation the Lions would make it a one-point ballgame, before tying it 76-76 with 42 seconds left.

Sabreen Muslim would go to the line for the Wildcats and make one of her two free throws to put Wilmington on top, 77-76, with 42 seconds to go. Georgian Court would have an opportunity with 18 seconds left, but would come up short, giving WilmU the defensive rebound and a timeout. Out of the timeout, full court pressure and a trap resulted in a Wildcats turnover to give the Lions another shot opportunity. The Lions missed the first attempt, but the offensive rebound fell to the Lions where Jada Atchison made the five-foot jumper inside the lane to seal the game with three seconds left.

The Wildcats would finish with three players who recorded a double-double in the contest, including sophomore Kiara Eubanks who finished with 23 points and 10 rebounds, going 9-12 from the free throw line; Sabreen Muslims who recorded 19 points, and 11 rebounds, going 7-9 from the floor; and LaShyra Williams who had 13 points, and 10 rebounds, going 5-6 from the foul line.

Wilmington is back on the court this Saturday when they travel to Dominican in a cross-division matchup. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m.

Goldey-Beacom Men’s Basketball Records 72-69 Victory Over Holy Family

Goldey-Beacom stepped back into play in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division and battled its way to a 72-69 victory over Holy Family at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

Eric Esposito canned a 3-pointer with 2:36 remaining to pull Holy Family within 67-64. Goldey-Beacom then needed a big basket on the other end and got it when junior Marcellus Livingston (Linden, NJ) drilled a huge triple with 2:15 to go for a six-point contest.

Following multiple empty possession on both sides, the Tigers closed to 70-66 with 74 seconds remaining on Branden Aughburns’ tip-in. After Goldey-Beacom missed two free throws, Holy Family had yet another chance to close the gap. But Aughburns missed a 3-pointer and the ball harmlessly fell out of bounds.

The Lightning missed a layup on their end and things then got even crazier when the Tigers’ Brendan Hoban banked in a 3-pointer with 13 seconds to go for a 70-69 game.

The ensuing inbounds pass resulted in Hoban recording a steal with 10 seconds left and the Tigers had a chance to take the lead. But Hoban missed a 3-pointer and the Lightning got the rebound.

Freshman Yasin Pretlow (Elizabeth, NJ) made two free throws to put the Lightning up 72-69 with 3.7 seconds left and Tigers set up a play. But Goldey-Beacom intentionally fouled and that sent Aughburns to the free throw line for a one-and-one with two seconds remaining.

However, Aughburns missed on the front end and freshman Nazim Derry (Atlantic City, NJ) got the rebound to finally end things.

Livingston and junior Kyle Elliot (Rahway, NJ) scored 19 points apiece, freshman Jesiah West (Elizabeth, NJ) had 12 and nine rebounds with junior Tevin Service (Union, NJ) getting 12 and eight for the Lightning (7-7, 4-1 CACC), who scored 47 points in the second half by shooting 52 percent (17-of-33) from the field.

Esposito netted 18 points, Aughburns had 15 points, 15 rebounds and seven blocks, Devon Moore recorded 12 points and eight rebounds with Hoban scoring 12 points for the Tigers (5-10, 2-4).

Goldey-Beacom on Saturday hits the road to face Post for a 3:00 pm contest. The women’s game between the same schools begins at 1:00 pm.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - - Danny Walsh hit a three-pointer to take the lead with 1:42 left in regulation, capping a 13-point, second half comeback as the Wilmington University men’s basketball team defeated Chestnut Hill, 75-66, in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division clash on Wednesday night inside Sorgenti Arena.

It was a slow start to the game for the Wildcats (5-11, 3-4 CACC), as the visitors missed their first five shots from the floor and was down 7-1 in the first five minutes. Despite the slow start and only shooting 23.3 percent from the floor in the first half, the end of the game was anything but slow.

The Griffins (3-13, 3-4 CACC) hit a three-pointer to open the second to take their largest lead of the game, 34-21. The Wildcats were able to cut the margin down to three, 36-33, but the Griffins had an answer and pushed the lead back out to 45-35 with 14:20 left.

Still down seven with 12:21 left, Jermaine Head had a 10-0 run all on his own, flipping the tide and giving the Wildcats life. Head had a tip-in and a three-pointer, followed by a steal and an old-fashioned three-point play to take a 48-47 lead. Another layup put the Wildcats up 50-47 with 9:26 to play.

The Griffins didn’t back down, however, as they went on their own 9-0 run, hitting a three-pointer to go up 56-50 with 6:44 to play. Once again Jermaine Head took over, hitting a three-pointer then driving and converting a layup and an and-one to tie the game.

The Griffins look to regain the momentum of the game with a steal and putting down a contested dunk to take a 60-56 lead, but a technical was assessed to the home team for crown control, leading to the Wildcats to getting one of the points back and was only down four with 4:43 to play.

Still down four, Kam Cooper converted an old-fashioned three-point play to go down one and Jordan Harding put in a layup moments later to tie the game, 64-64, with 2:29 to play. After getting a defensive stop, Danny Walsh hit a three-pointer from the top of the arc, giving the Wildcats a lead they wouldn’t relinquish, 67-64, with 1:42.

The defense came away with another steal and Jermaine Head put the nail in the Griffins with another three-pointer, giving the Wildcats a 70-64 lead with 42 seconds to play. Head then hit 5-of-6 from the foul line down the stretch to close out the victory.

Head finished with 33 points on 10-of-20 shooting, adding seven assists and three rebounds. Kam Cooper came off the bench to score 14 points with six rebounds while Jordan Harding added 13 points with three three-pointers.

The Wildcats shot 53.1 percent from the floor in the second half, including 9-of-18 from three-point territory and 11-of-12 from the foul line.

The Wildcats will look for their second straight win on Saturday when they return home to host Felician at the Complex in a CACC cross-divisional contest. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Wilmington University women’s basketball team would come within two of Chestnut Hill’s controlling lead, but the Griffins would take the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division matchup, 81-70, Wednesday night at Sorgenti Arena.

The Wildcats (1-14, 1-6 CACC) found themselves down early, as Chestnut Hill (5-11, 4-3 CACC) would come out fast, opening up the contest on an 8-0 run, holding Wilmington to their first basket with 5:45 to go in the first quarter. Kiara Eubanks would put the Wildcats within three on an and-one with 4:44 to play, but the Griffins would end the quarter on an 8-3 run, making it an 18-10 game.

With 5:31 to play until the half, Emily Ansah closed the gap to within four on the break after a LaShyra Williams steal to make it a 24-20 contest. Then Ansah put the Wildcats within their closest range of Chestnut Hill’s lead, making it a 25-23 ballgame with 3:37 left. With just over three minutes to play, the Wildcats would put the Griffins to the line five times, helping them knock down 8-10 of their shots to extend to a 37-28 lead at the half.

Wilmington came out of the half looking for a run, as they would outscore the Griffins 7-2 in the first five minutes of play, to make it a 39-35 game. Several missed opportunities from the Wildcats would help the Griffins score nine consecutive points and extend their lead out to 54-38 with 1:44 to play in the third.

Chestnut Hill would jump out to their largest lead of 20 with 9:07 to play in regulation, but despite the Wildcats going on to outscore the Griffins in the quarter, 28-22, it would not be enough.
