CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - UNI wrestling advanced four Panthers after the first session of the Division I NCAA Wrestling Championships and finished the first session in tied for fifth place.

Lance Runyon opened his first NCAA appearance with a fall over the wrestler who defeated him at the Big 12 Championships for the bronze at 165 pounds.

Kyle Biscoglia tacked on a second fall, and Parker Keckeisen notched his sixth consecutive major decision to bring his win streak to 15 consecutive matches.

UNI rolled through its first four matches before suffering its first loss. Derek Holschlag and Tyrell Gordon won their pigtail matches to face the No. 1 seeds in their second matches before being bumped to consolations.

"We got everyone back and ready to wrestle tonight, and we are going to make a lot of hay on the backside," said head coach Doug Schwab. "All eight are alive, and now it's time to get fueled up and get ready for the match tonight and score a whole bunch of points again."

PANTHER NOTES​

Schwab took over the UNI wrestling program in the 2011 season. The highest finish for the Panthers under his helm was in 2019 with a 13th-place finish and six qualifiers.

The Panthers are on a four-tournament streak of having at least one All-American. It's the 14th-longest streak in the nation.

The Panthers qualified eight wrestlers, the most since UNI sent nine in 2008. UNI head coach Doug Schwab has taken seven qualifiers from 2020, 2017 and 2014.

DETROIT, MICH. – The NC State Wrestling team will have four going for a semifinal berth tomorrow, and the remaining six qualifiers are all still alive in the consolation round at the 2022 NCAA Championships.

After the first two sessions, the Pack sits in third place in the team race with 21.5 points. Penn State leads with 27.5 and Arizona State is second with 22. NC State and Iowa are the only two teams with all 10 wrestlers still alive.

Tariq Wilson (149 pounds), Ed Scott (157), Hayden Hidlay (174) and Trent Hidlay (184) all advanced to the quarterfinals with a pair of wins on the first day of action.

Wilson gave up the first takedown, but responded with his own and a pair of escapes for a 4-3 decision over Penn’s Artalona. Scott used a pair of takedowns, a pair of reversals and 1:09 of ride time to down Oklahoma’s Thomas 9-6.

Both Hidlay brothers punched their tickets to the quarterfinals for the second straight year. Hayden had all five takedowns and 2:02 of ride time for a bonus point win, 13-5 over Duke’s Finesilver. Trent had a pair of first-period takedowns to secure a 5-3 decision over Minnesota’s Salazar.

Jack started with a 10-5 decision, as he recorded all five takedowns of the bout and added in 3:07 of ride time. Bullard followed up with the lone tech fall of the day, as he jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first period and his bout ended with an escape in the second, 15-0.

Trumble scored the Pack’s third pin of the day with a fall 5:33 into his match. Houghton closed the Wolfpack’s day with a 9-4 decision, with three takedowns and over two minutes of ride time.

Detroit, MI – Fighting Illini redshirt sophomore Zac Braunagel advanced to the quarterfinal round of the 184-pound bracket on the first day of NCAA Wrestling Championships at Little Caesar Arena. The No. 9 seed, Braunagel scored two victories, highlighted by a sudden-victory pin of No. 8 seed Marcus Coleman (Iowa State) in Friday night's second round. No. 7 Lucas Byrd (133 pounds) and No. 14 Luke Luffman (285 pounds) remain alive in consolation brackets after splitting their two matches on Thursday.

Coming off a third-place finish at Big Ten Championships, Braunagel opened his 2022 NCAA Championships with a commanding 11-4 decision against No. 24 seed Caleb Hopkins (Campbell), scoring three takedowns in the first period and two more in the final period to clinch it.
The Belleville, Illinois native returned Thursday night and battled through a defensive struggle against Iowa State's 184-pounder. With both wrestlers scrambling in and out of trouble for three periods, the match reached sudden victory where Braunagel put Coleman on his back and quickly got both shoulders on the mat. The two victories on Thursday set up a match against top-seeded Myles Amine (Michigan) on Friday morning.
No. 14 seed Luke Luffman split a pair of major decisions on Thursday, winning his opening match, 10-2, against (19) Luke Surber (OKST) with five takedowns. Luffman dropped his evening match against No. 3 (3) Tony Cassioppi (Iowa), 12-3 and will begin competition in the heavyweight consolation bracket on Friday.
No. 7 seed Lucas Byrd bounced back from an opening-round defeat with a 3-1 decision over No. 23 seed Anthony Madrigal (Oklahoma) in the 133-pound consolation bracket. Tied 0-0 in the third period, Byrd, starting on bottom, executed a reversal and added a point for riding time to advance to the second round of wrestlebacks.
The No. 27 seed at 125 pounds, Justin Cardani dropped both of his matches to conclude his NCAA Championships appearance.
The action continues on Friday at 10 a.m. central time on ESPNU with quarterfinal matches as well as two rounds of the consolation bracket. Friday's evening session begins at 7 p.m. central time on ESPN with semifinals and two more rounds of wrestlebacks.

6 Hawkeyes Advance to NCAA Quarterfinals

DETROIT
-- The University of Iowa wrestling team wrestling team advanced six wrestlers to the quarterfinals of the 2022 NCAA Wrestling Championships on Thursday night at Little Caesars Arena.

Austin DeSanto, Max Murin, Alex Marinelli, Michael Kemerer, Jacob Warner and Tony Cassioppi all won in the round of 16 and compete Friday morning for a chance to make it to the semifinals.

The first five Hawkeyes all won by decision. Cassioppi closed the top half of Iowa’s bracket with a 12-3 major decision at 285. He totaled four takedowns and nearly four minutes of riding time to advance to the quarterfinals for the second straight year.

Marinelli and Kemerer are making their fourth career appearance in the NCAA quarters. Marinelli scored one takedown in the second and added two more in the third to win 8-2 at 165. Kemerer scored a takedown in every period and added two minutes, 19 seconds of riding time in a 9-4 decision at 174.

DeSanto and Murin both advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals for the third time in their careers. DeSanto took a 3-0 lead with a takedown in the closing seconds of the second period, and added another takedown late in the third to win 5-1 at 133. Murin scored one takedown in the first, one in the second, and another in the third to win 8-4 at 149.

Warner escaped to start the second and scored the match’s only takedown in the third to win 3-1 at 197, advancing to the quarterfinals for the second year in a row.

Jaydin Eierman and Kaleb Young both dropped overtime decisions and were bounced to the consolation side of the bracket. Eierman fell, 4-2, at 141 and Young dropped a 3-1 decision at 157.

All 10 Hawkeyes return to the mat tomorrow after Drake Ayala and Abe Assad responded from opening round losses with wins in the first round of the consolation bracket. Ayala picked up his first career win at the NCAA Championships with a 7-1 decision at 125, and Assad earned his first career NCAA victory with a 9-3 decision at 184.

The Hawkeyes are in fifth place with 20.5 team points. Penn State leads the team race with 27.5 points. Arizona State (22), NC State (21.5) and Michigan (21) round out the top five.
