#20 Newark Charter (11-7) @ #4 Cape (15-3). These two teams didn’t play each other this year.
NC is coming a big 1st round win over Archmere. NC was up 5-0 in the first then 8-3 going into the bottom of the 5th inning. NC allowed Arch to score 6 runs to take the lead 9-8. NC battled back scoring 4 runs over the last two innings to win the game. Newark Charter had a terrible start to the season going 1-6 against some tough competition…Caravel, RLCA,Appo,CR, Sallies, DMA, Riverdale Baptist. They finished the second half of the season going 9-1. NC was 4-6 against this years playoff teams. NC is scoring over 6 runs per game and have hit the 3rd most homers of any team this year, 16. Buglio has 6 of them. NC does allow over 5 runs per game on average but it’s a little deceiving. They have held 7 teams to 2 runs or fewer including Sallies. But the other 6 don’t have winning records. But they allowed a lot of runs to the better teams they faced. Matthews is 6-1 on the mound. At the plate 7 different players have each hit a dinger. NC had their first appearance in the post season last year. The first game they beat Archmere 6-2, then lost a 1-0 game to Caravel in the quarters.
Cape had an amazing season this year. They went 15-3, scored 152 runs, only allowed 49 runs and belted what is probably an all time record 27 home runs in a season. Cape was up on Riverdale Baptist 4-2 late, before giving up 5 runs in the 6th. Riverdale is one of the top programs in the country. Cape had a letdown against Appo after being up 4-1, losing 5-4 and lost their final game to St Marks 9-7. Other than those games, Cape has been rolling. Cape has a stable of pitchers, Erickson , Gelof, Elliott. At the plate Elliott has 7 HR’s, Zach Gelof 6, with Dale and Jake Gelof hitting 4 each and Johnson with 3. Cape has only made 10 prior tourneys, but has now been in 4 straight. Cape had a dream season in 2015 and got to the championship game after beating Sallies and Caravel, but losing to Appo in the final. The last two seasons they went out in the quarter finals.
Prediction: Its hard to think NC has chance in this one on paper. Cape has the dominant pitching and dominant hitting and NC already pitched their top pitcher against Archmere. But you have to play the game.
