Delaware State vs. Howard News-Former Dover High and Delaware alum Bryan Bossard passes away

Delaware State Hornets (4-2, 1-0 MEAC) vs. Howard Bison (1-5, 0-0 MEAC)

Saturday, Oct. 22 ● Greene Stadium ● Washington, D.C. ● 1 p.m.

TV: MEAC Digital Network/ESPN+ ●
Live Stats

Howard will play its first game at Greene Stadium of the 2022 season this weekend, opening the MEAC portion of its schedule against a Delaware State team that won its conference opener last week, spoiling Norfolk State’s Homecoming 28-7 behind three touchdown passes from C.J. Henry. Howard is coming off a 41-25 loss to Harvard at Audi Field in the Truth & Service Classic this past weekend, but the Bison have a clean slate of sorts now that conference play is upon them. The Hornets, meanwhile, will be playing with heavy hearts following the unexpected passing of offensive coordinator Bryan Bossard earlier in the week. The all-time series between the two teams, which dates all the way back to 1941, is 38-38-1, and the Hornets snapped a four-game skid to the Bison last season with a 30-23 win at Alumni Stadium in Dover, Del.

Tatnall (3-3) at Charter (6-0)

Charter is off to their best start ever but they haven’t really been tested yet. The Force are led on offense by QB Roman Paoli and versatile WR/RB/KR Tenye Martin. Tatnall has won 3 straight games since starting the season 0-3 with losses against Archmere, Friends and St. Elizabeth. Tatnall should test Charter and this game could come down to who has the ball last but I’ll take the Force in a close one. A Charter win means a showdown next week at St. Elizabeth.

Charter 28 Tatnall 26

Friends (6-0) at Howard (6-0)

Game of the week and maybe the game of the year. Both these teams have had impressive seasons so far and are very well coached. Howard is a physical team and has dominated their opponents on the line of scrimmage. These teams feature great QB play with Matthews (Howard) and Tattersall (Friends). Friends won 35-0 last season when these two teams played in the regular season. Expect a much closer game this year that could go either way.

Friends 21 Howard 20

Sussex Central (5-1) at Cape Henlopen (4-2)

Huge game for Cape as they are battling for one of the last playoff spots in 3A. Cape is one of the top scoring teams in the state averaging 33 points per game and scoring more than 40 points in 4 games. Sussex Central at times has been dominant on defense. They have shutout victories over Salesianum (7-0) and Dover (21-0). I think Cape will get some points but Central's edge on defense and solid run game should be just enough to win this one.

Sussex Central 28 Cape Henlopen 21

St. Mark’s (6-1) at DMA (3-2)

St. Mark’s is probably the better team and DMA has had a rough season, on and off the field, but I’ve got a gut feeling about this one. DMA needs a signature win and their going to get it on their homecoming.

DMA 24 St. Mark’s 20

Smyrna (5-1) at Dover (5-2)

Up until last week I was all set to pick Dover in this game and then Dover got dominated at Sussex Central 21-0 last week. Right now Smyrna might be the best team in the state and although I expect Dover to be much better this week than last I can’t pick against Smyrna. The Smyrna defense will make enough stops to win this one. Smyrna makes it 5 wins a row and gets ready for Sallies.

Smyrna 22 Dover 14

Middletown (3-3) at St. Georges (2-4)

Middletown is still a top team in 3A but they’ve got a lot to improve on after losing to Salesianum last week. They’ll fix things against St. Georges and then get ready for their trip to Florida to face IMG.

Middletown 30 St. Georges 14

Salesianum (5-1) at William Penn (2-4)

Sallies has emerged as a real threat in 3A after their upset win at Middletown. The Sals seem to be getting much better on offense and combining that with a very good defense and special teams unit makes Salesianum a very dangerous team. Look for the Salesainum momentum to continue this weekend as they should have little problem with old rival William Penn. Salesianum has won 4 in a row vs. William Penn by an average of 26 points with the Colonials last win coming in 2016 vs. Sallies (21-14). Smryna up next for the Sals.

Salesianum 34 William Penn 7

Last week: 3-2

Season: 33-10

Best Pick last week: St. Mark’s 44 Concord 8 (St. Mark’s won 35-3)

Worst pick last week: Dover 31 SC 20 (SC won 21-0)

Delaware State win over Norfolk State

Delaware State 28, Norfolk State 7

NORFOLK, Va.
– Quarterback C.J. Henry completed 14-of-19 passes for 194 yards and three touchdowns, while the defense pitched a shutout for the first 48 minutes to highlight Delaware State’s 28-7 victory over Norfolk State in the Hornets’ MEAC opener, spoiling the Spartans’ homecoming before more than 22,000 fans at Dick Price Stadium today.

The Hornets won their second straight game to improve to 4-2 overall, their best six-game mark since 2012.

The win was Delaware State’s first in an official MEAC opener since a 35-10 victory over Savannah State in 2014, and first official MEAC road win since defeating Norfolk State 13-10 in overtime that same year.

Henry threw two touchdown passes to Jerrish Halsey and another to NyGhee Lolley.

The Hornets also rushed for a season-high 204 yards, led by Marquis Gillis with a career-high 123 and touchdown.

Delaware State’s next home game is Oct. 29 against North Carolina Central in the Hornets’ annual homecoming contest. Start time is set for 2:02 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.

Concord (1-4) at St. Mark's (5-1)

Yeah I know this is an easy pick but I'm going to be at the game and I need to pad my winning percentage. Concord continues to struggle this season and has only scored 6 points in their last 2 games. Catching St. Mark's off a disappointing loss to rival Archmere isn't going to help.

St Mark's 44 Concord 8

Dover (5-1) at Sussex Central (4-1)

Since losing in week 1 to Arundel, Dover has reeled off 5 straight victories winning all 5 games by double digits. They face a tough task tonight at Sussex Central but the Senators should win to set up a huge matchup next week when they host Smyrna.

Dover 31 Sussex Central 20

Salesianum (4-1) at Middletown (3-2)

Middletown is 3-0 when facing in state competition and has only allowed 2 TD in those 3 games. The other score was an INT return by William Penn late in the game with Middletown way ahead. The Salesianum defense has been playing very well this year and should keep the game close but I just can't see Sallies scoring enough points to win this game.

Middletown 20 Salesianum 7

Appo (2-3) at William Penn (2-3)

I've had zero luck predicting games in which these 2 teams are involved. Both teams struggle on offense and I'm giving the nod to Appo who's defense is only allowing 15 points per game and has been a little more consistent than the Colonials.

Appo 26 William Penn 13

Mt. Zion Prep (1-4) at Friends (5-0)

Don't be fooled by Mt. Zion's record of 1-4 this year because this is definitely a step up for Friends. Mt. Zion has only scored 78 points in 5 games this year and Friends at times has been unstoppable on offense albeit against some lesser competition. The Quakers over the last few years have consistently stepped up when they needed to. Expect that again on Saturday.

Friends 21 Mt. Zion 17

Last Week: 4-1
Season: 30-8

Worst pick last week: St. Mark's 31 Archmere 21 (Archmere won 28-14)

Delaware athletic association to examine schools use of ineligible player, number change (DE online, News Journal)

So finally, it is in print. The article says very little if anything. Now the DIAA is going to review on Thursday. That should be an action packed 6 hours of nothing with a bag of nothing and a hint of maybe could be something. I have seen numerous posts about the rules and what should happen if you intentionally change out a suspended players number, do not report etc. This is so clear. When, I did not say if, when the DIAA does nothing about this (along with all the other allegations that are on D3 Lincoln), they need to find something else to do with their time. AS a group or at least those that try to follow the DIAA, it has become hard to listen to and have almost no credibility at this point. They have their chance to stand for something -ethics? morals? rules? Also surprised the article did not go deeper.

Refresher Course on Board Rules!

Two basics that are being violated...

1. NO NAME-CALLING- That means other posters, coaches, players, administrators, media types, anyone. Period. If you take issue with someone here, debate the post, not the person. Agree to disagree if necessary.

2. NO VULGARITY OR VIOLENCE- Cursing or talking about drugs or violence will not be tolerated. There are young people who view the board as well, and we're going to be considerate of them and their families.

If you can't abide by these, don't post. You will be deleted and/or banned on the spot. I'm typically against both of those options, but I will do what is necessary.
